Time to exit the world of college football with a whimper. :(

We pretty much have nothing to play for, a coach who will be leaving, recruits who will be entering the transfer portal in days, an away game in a hostile environment vs a rival, and mountain west competition in the offing. This is an all time low, and I think it will show in the players’ performance. :(

70-19 Ducks as Jonathan Smith does some crazy shit early on, convinced he can’t win the game, that results in a bizarre 19 points.

  1. Would like to see Mizzou play Oregon or Washington. They have the offensive power to keep up and a very good defense! Would be a great game!

    • Yeah, Iowa sucks as does most if the Big 10. Iowa does have a good defense though, but you gotta score to win. I think Iowa and Penn St would play to a zero zero score!

  2. So much potential this year….so Beaver-like to under achieve for the wrong reasons.

    Ducks by 21.

Hopefully enough Beavers play with enough pride (Martinez, OLine) to make it semi-respectable.

Wouldn’t mind a few efforts w/4 receiver sets s, 6’2″ WRs in the slot(?) with quick hitting routes and DJ given the green light to run. I do think they’ll have to set up the run with the pass on some series, or it will be too easy to play the run and throttle DJ.

DJ needs to have levity when the going gets tough, but express emotion and fire on positive plays (e.g. running for 26 yards on 4th and 1), have some goddamned fun and inspire your teammates .

ST is going to have to be special and offset Smith’s stupid aggressiveness. Don’t lok desperate Smith.

  3. JS probably thinks he has come too far to start over in the current Pac-2 situation. And he was being faced with multiple exits. My sadness is for the eligible players who need to make choices. Chiles will surely go with him. I would love to see Trent Bray as HC but he might go with Smith.

As I see it, all we can do is contribute to the Dam Collective.

Tinkle has to go – I watched 10 minutes of the Pitt game – decent shots but no points. WT still does that thing where he calls over the players immediately after he thinks they have erred and wraps them in a bear hug to lecture them.

  4. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. I can’t believe MSU was his only option, if he is chasing bigger bucks.???

      1

If Smith is gambling on leavIng vs staying, he probably has in the back of his mind that OSU is always a sucker to hire back coaches that leave, ala Riley.
      Very little downside.

Doing it right after the Civil War blowout will be a dick move, but there really is no good time and gives him more time to poach players and start the recruiting process.

Sucks to be a Beaver fan right now

        1

I see two big reasons why Smith jumps, the money, and guaranteed Power 5 status. Barners doesn’t have anything to counter that, unfortunately. The sad part is that Smith will be fired within five years. He’s not so good that he’s going to get MSU over the hump, so he will end up in the Mountain West on the rebound anyway either by OSU or another program.

  5. 5
    4

Apparently oregon is playing the Mich State game on their jumbo screen during pre game right now.
Nice troll, and fuck those guys.
Some jilted Beaver fan is gonna snap and run a duck fan off the road, I’m afraid. Hope it’s not me

  6. 1
    1

28-27 Beavs finish on a high note making big plays and playing fired up. DJU is going to shrug off a tackle from his brother for a big run. Let’s make it a good one!

  7. 70 -19 Angry? Smith is gone? All recruits and the best players? Come on Angry, pull yourself together I don’t see the beavs winning but you sound like your about ready for a collapse. Nothing is for sure yet. You live in a beautiful state and a great bike ride is just out your door. Have a drink and just roll with it. We are beaver fans, it’s supposed to be all screwed up.

  8. Yeah, did not hear anything/rumors on the Smith hiring on the PSU – MSU game. Will be interesting to see if Fox mentions anything about Smith going to MSU.

  9. 3
    1

This ended up being like a Riley season all along. Fitting way to end the ride. 7-8 win season for a team that had potential for more, but golly gee we just wished we would have run the ball more.

I’m half expecting this one to be over by halftime, but Smith’s teams have always surprised with their resilience. My extra special Beaver Hell is going to be staying up until midnight because the game is close, but Nike beats us anyway.

    • Our defensive secondary sucks and the starting WRs are all 5’8” and can’t make a contested catch. 8-9 wins seemed about right to me.

  10. Oregon is good, but they’re not unbeatable – Washington beat them and who else have they really played? Lanning with all his cliches seems like a regular season coach who runs it up on lesser opponents. I think we can give them a good game, but how will the MSU stuff affect them? Guess we’re about to find out.

  11. if Smith leaves, it will be incumbent upon this site to start the inoculation against the prospect, 3-4 years hence, to take him back when he fails, inevitably, to make MSU into a powerhouse. Smith was likely to leave sooner or later, but if he leaves OSU in its current precarious state, shame on him.

  12. Oregon came out running our run offense. But don’t worry everyone as our couches will out trick them with a passing attack when we get the ball.

        • Doesn’t plant and throw in stride. Throws flat footed. Really bad technique. I think it’s because he can’t make tight throws so he’s waiting for someone to break wide open. It’s madden style. Never works in real sports.

          • He’s made some of the tightest throws I’ve seen from any college QB this year. However, you are right, he throws with bad technique often. However, when he uses good technique he’s elite.

          • Yeah that’s not good enough. When Dave Kingman hit a ball square he was elite, too, but overall he was a shitty player because he didn’t do that enough. If you notice the great players do it right ever time and can repeat their actions.

  13. I get going for it even after the penalty given the fact they controlled possession and drive down and scored with ease. But if you don’t have the look or matchup you want then have DJ punt it.

And prior to the penalty why not go under center and motion a TE to shove him for a yard? Stupid to be in SG there.

    • JS is getting the family boarding passes so they can fly out of Eugene tomorrow morning and become a legend in Lansing.
He has studied the coaching route of Nick Saban and sees a route to Alabama within 10 years…

  14. 4
    1

Bo Nix invented football and taught Tom Brady how to play QB. Bo Nix actually founded the University of Oregon and built the state of Oregon. Bo Nix is the greatest person in the history of the world.

  15. So any pass play beyond 20 yards and Duck defenders get to hold Beaver Pygmy receivers as the ball arrives. Good to know early so it won’t matter later since these early possessions are critical while the game is still somewhat close.
Same as last week. Early no call determines the game.

  16. 12

Ugh family in town for holiday still at my house and no one knows football but have decided to come sit and watch and ask questions…kill me now

    • It would be 40-0 if they knew smith was leaving. The fact the Martinez has stated he’s coming back makes the smith rumors almost zero.

  17. So far on offense our receivers are not getting separation and there were a couple throws right into their hands they didn’t catch.

  18. I don’t know what’s worse the Beavs play or the but hugging duck announcers. This is as bad as it gets. Didn’t Huard play at UW? Is he in AA now and making his amends?

  19. 4
    2

Smith already picking his bags for the balmy Midwest destination of his dreams.
Chiles will be waiting at the airport to go with him and create the buzz for Sparta fans.
Expect a quick 3 & out to start
    The 3rd.
Lindgren stinks and JS is elsewhere.

It seems like the Ducks are anointed as the champs by Fox.

    • Haven’t seen Chiles on the sideline. He’s always right by DJU, but he’s been missing every time they show DJ on the sideline.

Fitting end to the program to get kicked in the balls by Nike in a season we could have had a shot at the championship.

  20. Ohio State and Michigan tomorrow, can’t stand either program….

Going to have to actually root for Huskies against Ducks next weekend…

Bray goid at second half adjustments but…

    • But Lindgren not so much. Expect a heavy dose of DJ lobbing 30 yards fades 3 yards out of bounds to the Pygmy brigade for many 3 & outs to finish the long and miserable PAC12 journey for OSU football.

  21. 4
    2

Gotta say, score is closer than I expected.
Anyone notice no graphics for the Beavs. Always Bo Nix, their defense, or their offense over the last couple first half. Hardly any talk about the Beavers. Not shocking, just blatant and disrespectful.

  22. 2
    3

Waaaaa! Oh we’re down 14 with the ball coming out of half. What an apathetic fan base. A whole bunch of “sit down on 3rd and long” kinda folk

  23. The receivers are so much more effective when they’re running laterally and using their speed to run away from defenders. They’re just not big enough to fight for balls on vertical routes.

  24. Maybe Jonathan is trying to take another job because he’s worried about getting fired for running a fucking pass play on 4th and 2

  25. 5
    3

This game tough to watch with JS future uncertainty. It almost has the feel of a funeral march for one side and a celebratory mocking of the funeral by the other side.
The Ducks have OSU to thank for being part of PAC in the early
Years and now they dance on the grave of OSU being left behind and buried by all voices and media.
    So sad and disappointing.

  26. 1
    7

Hey Angry; you gonna shut down the sight after tonight? I mean, y’all who are talking here can take it to a group chat. No need for a bunch of apathetic fair weather fans.

  27. turn out the lights. game stayed competitive longer than I thought it would.

Now that we don’t have the 2023 season as a diversion, it gets really interesting.

  28. 1
    3

So the game is essentially decided by 2 4&6 play calls formDJ to go shotgun and pass to no one as Ducks bring an all out blitz against an oline down 2 starters.
Lindgren should be fired tonight. Loser mentality and loser approach to try and win a game with no creativity at all.

  29. Intermediate receiver wide open. DJ missed again. Gould did not do a good job of breaking up the interception either. DJ is average at best.

  30. 5
    1

Laughably bad. Almost can’t even be mad at this point. Refs won’t call anything. Coaches checked out. Players injured. Tough chance going in, no chance as things have developed

  31. Ducks look impressive but the Beavs look like they have no fire. I think the Mich St rumors are true and the team knows it.
JS is going to leave in an ignominious fashion and leave OSU at its program crossroads.
He has a great shot to make the playoffs as a pseudo independent for the next 2 years but he is taking the bag of money to finish 8th in Big 10 for the next 4 years. So disappointing but of course luck of the Beavs.
Last year when the Beavs had the best shot they had no qb. This year the schedule set up best, JS lost 2 key games by himself.

Barnes will admit this week he has begun a coaching search for a replacement.

  32. So do people really want to play these type of body bag games with Oregon in the future when we’re not in a power conference amd getting $5 mill a year in media money? Regardless if JS actually stays or not, Lindgren has to go. I’ve been on the fire Lindgren camp for 2 years now but this might be the worst game he’s ever called when the stakes absolutely couldn’t be higher.

  33. I read several posters here say Lindgren should be fired. What are you talking about. When Smith leaves they will promote him to head coach.

  34. DJ ugelelelelelel or what ever has not been good all year and it is showing again today. Missed receivers and no mobility. He just went down and wasn’t touched.

  35. 6
    4

If Lindgren is promoted to Head Coach, I’ll probably be done as a Beav fan actually. No way to reward a guy for killing 2 great seasons by himself

Maybe Beavs can take out some frustration on Nix in this series.

    • And even the last drive. How about some no-huddle and a sense of urgency? Just sort of plodded along. Oh, let’s run for three yards and burn 40 seconds off the clock. At least get a fucking TD, make the score more respectable, and then have some fun with an onside kick.

  36. 8
    2

I have to say I think we had the weapons on offense this year to be a lot better than we were. I honestly think DJ is not very good and you add Lindgren to that and we under achieved.

  37. I was close on the score margin at least…i thought 21 points…

Difference in motivation and D lines (okus OSU O line down 2 starters) was noticeable.

If Smith and Chiles are gone, that had to affect team. Not that they would have win, but might have gave been competitive as they were in the first 11 games.

  38. Man, I remember when OSU had more sub-four minute milers than any other University.

    Now there’s no track team.

OSU’s slide down started with their failure to recruit Sonny Sixkiller.

  39. 19
    2

After that showing I’m starting to believe the rumors about Smitty leaving and losing the locker room. We’ve seen this team handle in game adversity and battle back with grit but tonight there was nothing.

    Lindgren is awful.

Bray is good and our defense was on the field the entire game and still got some stops.

This just felt like a Riley team tonight. Hip hip we’ll get ‘em next time gosh darn it, who wants in n out?

Just depressing as fuck. I don’t think we win this game if we beat AZ and UW like we should have though.

Back to the basement I guess.

    • 9
      2

      Lindgren is awful…

Maybe I’m in the minority but I was not happy with Bray either tonight. Why are we playing such soft coverage even down 3+ scores with nothing to lose. There wasn’t a CB in close coverage all night. Maybe try press man for a possession or two instead of getting cooked over and over again playing 10 yards off the line of scrimmage. I really don’t think Bo nix is all that but when there’s nobody within 5 yards of his receivers he looked like god! We might have well just handed him the heisman with the scheming tonight. No aggresion we looked scared. And I don’t think our freshman DBs are that bad either…

  40. 37
    3

I think it is foolish to continue playing the Ducks. Stick with the Gundy doctrine of declaring it was the rival who left and ended the rivalry and put it squarely on them.
As a program they have been classless and arrogant for 20 years. Don’t reward them with an easy travel game even if you might get millions out of it, they would only view it as charity and be even worse than “big brother” garbage.

    • 6
      1

I don’t really care one way or the other, but I don’t see the gap getting anything but wider unless OSU gets a Power 5 invitation. I think Colorado St plays CU because they’ve been pretty average for the past 20 years. I don’t see Ohio U playing Ohio St and I’m afraid that’s what the gap may become.

      • 2
        1

And yet CSU gets rolled even in the worst years of CU football. The gap is too wide. Not sure why people bring those 2 schools up as it’s not a great endorsement for these types of rivalries.

        • If you’re referring to my comment, I’m saying it’s not a reason to play the Quacks, but the Rams have won 6 times since 2000 and it looks like they don’t play every year any longer. Beavs have beaten the Ducks 8 times since 2000 as a supposedly “equal” Power 5 school, so yes it’s going to be a beatdown. The problem is economic, they are most likely going to be serious financial considerations in 2-3 years depending on how the lawsuits go. The OSU program is going to need money from somewhere. I guess they could go on the road and get slaughter, depends on how the numbers pan out.

  41. 5
    1

Back in early September I thought getting the Beavs and 7.5 vs nike was a good bet. Figured the over 8.5 wins was a good bet. Figured DJU was gonna be a real difference maker and Bray’s D was gonna be lights out all year.
Guess I’ll now break my crystal ball.

    • 9
      2

The Quack defensive improvement was real. Beaver defense regressed slightly. The offense improved, but DJ did not end up being a QB who could win a game on his own. A sub 60% completion rate is not going to get you there when playing from behind.

      • There were some throws that just weren’t good but DJ had others that were but not caught by our average receivers. So in fairness I think the completion percentage is somewhat inaccurate against him. But he is not fast enough in his reads and as tall as he is gets his throws tipped to often.

  42. 9
    3

Chalk up a bowl game loss as well since there will be about 40 guys entering the transfer portal next week.
JS has just done to OSU what no one else could. He has built it up only to dash it at the most perilous time.

Too bad. DJ, Gould, Bolden weren’t as good as we thought they might be as a combo offense. Oline and DM are for real and DM is likely going to the highest bidder.
Angry pegged it in early August and the last 4’months were just a temporary facade for all of them until they can hit the portal and find new schools and some
Will get big NIL to go to SEC or BIG10.

8-4 is a disappointment to me.

  43. 8
    1

IF Smith leaves for MSU Sunday as runored, and IF he left Chiles out of this game to protect him for next season, he dud so to the potential detriment of his team tonight and its a similar move as the traitorous 10 on a smaller scale ….

If your #2 QB is healthy, you have them ready to play in your rivalry game. Particularly when you’ve been developing them all season long.

    • 7
      1

Correct. As I said before, unless the rumors turn out to be untrue, what Smith is doing here is every bit as bad as the multiple abominable coward moves that Petrino ever did.

    • “No decisions have been made,” Smith said. “I asked this team to take an approach to lock in for four months. … I’ve taken the same approach.”

      The part apparently not written:

‘Except for when I stopped my family thanksgiving dinner to talk with another team about going there, a day before the Beavs last civil war game ‘, I mean we didn’t finalize numbers sooo…’

      • 10
        1

Yeah, the talks with MSU didn’t start fifteen minutes after the game ended, but I guess you have to go with coach speak. I just hope OSU doesn’t take you back at some point in the future. I don’t blame you for running away because it’s tough not knowing the future, but let’s be clear, you are running away when the one thing the football program could use is stability.

  44. 11
    18

Do I get an apology now? My exact prediction for how the season would go, 8-4 ceiling, has come to fruition. And most of this board called me delusional/troll when I said this is what would happen.

On Smith, I feel it would be a very dumb move to go somewhere else right now, at least somewhere like MSU. Money is obviously always a motivator, but he already makes more than enough at OSU to live a very wealthy lifestyle as a multi-millionaire, and it is a great place to raise a family. Expectations are relatively low, and even winning 7 plus games a year will gain him a lot of respect with little pressure from admin or boosters at a place like OSU. He’s essentially already on a lifetime contract here, as long as he has winning seasons, he gets an automatic yearly extension.

Leaving OSU for a dumpster fire like MSU may be tempting given the additional money and resources, but is that really worth leaving a relatively low pressure, decent pay job your alma mater that already sees you as a legend at one of their most vulnerable times to head to a pressure cooker BIG 10 meatgrinder? I would lose an extreme amount of respect for Smith if he were to leave right now. I don’t expect him to stay with OSU for life if he doesn’t want to, even though it would be a smart decision on his part, but I would like for him to see all of this realignment stuff through with us before bouncing. Leaving for prestige and money at a time like this would be telling for him. It’s not like he’s having to eat cat food at OSU either. The man still makes more than what many people make in their whole life in 1-2 years.

    • 6
      6

You have brought nothing but tension and anxiety into this room. Reevaluate your purpose for watching the game of football, or for fandom of any sport or hobby as a whole. You’re writing the book on how to butcher an intro to a community, in addition to having zero sense of ‘reading the room.’

We’re miserable enough without you here, we don’t need you stoking the fire.

    • 3
      1

I’m not going to apologize to you for you amazing prediction, but well done.
On paragraph 2, you might be forgetting the simple desire of many people in jobs of many kinds to move up to the what they perceive to be the hightest levels. And when you get that opportunity it’s relatively easy to rationalize that what you’re doing by moving on is OK.
I think you paragraph 3 is right on.

    • Why do you keep saying ceiling.

      This is obviously the floor.

You can’t even blame it on English not being your native tongue, because this is a pretty universal idiom.

So fuck off with your lazy hot takes based on five minutes of watching college football and then thinking that emotional contrarianism is a valid substitute for reason.

  45. 3
    2

Listening to the local post game callers on the KEJO radio show. Beavs definitely have some characters in their fanbase. Not the most articulate bunch.

    • That has to be sarcasm…it may result in mostly peaceful protests throughout campus and Corvallis downtown. If Barnes is that big of an idiot, I’m finally released as a Beaver fan.

    • 1
      4

      Dear god no. Just no!

Bryan Harsin is available. Although he may be returning to Boise

Matt Wells is currently serving as an analyst at Oklahoma.

Off the top of my head

    • Do you think Barnes can get Smilin’ Mike away from the New Jersey General head coaching job? It might take more than one new bicycle. Seriously though, I am concerned about how coveted of a job this is going to be with everything up in the air. I would be fine if Trent Bray is offered. Build a G5 powerhouse for the time being is maybe the best we can hope for.

      • 2
        7

Lots of coaches cut their teeth with MW gigs. It will be coveted, just not as much as a Pac12 gig.
And any success will mean short tenures as they get poached for higher paying jobs, so you constantly have to have a succession plan ready.

        • 9
          3

And this site as well as any media, will never give any shits who we hire.

We lost, it’s over- and I hate it more than probably anyone else. But it’s reconsider fandom, or for me- lack there of, or sports in general.

          • 10

I’m actually looking forward to a more level playing field. Beavs have always had to be punching up. It’s nice when we have the rare season that gives us a little hope that we can compete with the upper exchelon, but lets face it, we don’t have the mega donors to compete in those bidding wars.
Heck, we can’t even raise the $1M NIL collective donation required to get the matching $1M donation from an anonymous donor. We’re almost 3/4 of the way there, but we’re talking about a season spent scrounging just to come up with something most P5 teams can come up with overnight.
            It’s not sustainable

          • I think if Smith leaves we will loose a lot of players, coaches, etc. And instead of being the big dog playing MW teams we will still be punching up.

          • From a recruiting standpoint we’d be starting all over with 1 week before signing day. You’re absolutely right we might be mid-tier for a few years before stuff gets straightened out. You’d have to assume the facilities would be more attractive to the 2* guys than the other MW schools. So we have that

  46. hold is there a chance this is a mcmaryion part 2 and BG coulda have been the right decision?

does that world actually exist do we think?

  47. How about Bray as head coach and thus guy for O coordinator?

    “Brennan Marion, UNLV

    Position: Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks

    Total pay: $310,000

UNLV has surged to the top of the Mountain West in Barry Odom’s first season as head coach, and Marion’s innovative Go-Go offense is a key reason why. The Rebels have put up 40 points or more in six games this season, all of them wins, and boast both a top-20 rushing attack and one of the best third-down conversion rates in the country. Yet Marion, a former assistant at Pittsburgh and Texas, is not even among the 10 highest-paid assistants in his conference. That will almost certainly change this winter ? unless he’s hired away by another school, most likely as a coordinator at the Power Five level.”

Need to diversify the offense. Not abandon everything, but have some evolution in it.

  48. Isn’t it going to be fun when our golden boy leaves and we have to wait and wait for months and months in order to “trust the process” only to have us hire Andy Avalos?

I try to be optimistic but this is getting to a point where we need donors to step up or step in or else we will become like Boise St, just without the blue turf. I’m sick of the Beavs getting the faux sympathy from everyone else. We need Mr. Huang to bail us out.

Also, if we ever hired Riley back I would not buy any tix and I hope there’s enough people who’d be angry enough to protest that aw schucks, gum chewing buffoon.

    • If Smith leaves they have to hire a young upstart. Even somebody that’s done well in lower division football. It’s going to take an enormous amount of energy to get through these next couple seasons. If there’s a transfer exodus, the Beavs will start out behind the eight ball even against MW competition.

  49. 19
    1

Just a thought. IT’S JUST A GAME. I will continue to support the Beavs through thick or thin. However: try for the top? Absolutely! Have a stroke if we don’t make it? Not a chance! I played fairly high club rugby in two countries and one thing I liked was that after two halves of bashing each other on the pitch, everyone (both sides) headed for the club room for beer, laughter, and lies; too bad we can’t do that here. I’m prepared to believe that most all coaches and players are giving there best most all of the time. If not, yes changes must be made. But I worry about the health of some folks who go totally off the rails and are ready to string up players or coaches who don’t meet expectations, and threaten to never be supporters again, etc. Remember; IT JUST A GAME.

    • 10

Good points and I wish sports were like that here as well. There’s just too much money involved and that incentive taints everything. It really does make everything worse. Makes it unaffordable to go to the games and turns all the players and coaches into mercenaries.

  50. 15

Oregon State was Jonathan Smith’s dream job when no other P5 school would hire him as a head coach. When a B1G school offered him a lot more money, suddenly it wasn’t his dream job anymore. To have this news leak right before kickoff is just a gutless move. If he didn’t want to stay, alright, I can understand it but he’s leaving a school who is desperate for stability to go to a dumpster fire and everybody found out right before their rivalry game and their last game as a member of the PAC-12. No respect for someone who moves like that. This could have waited a week or 2. Doing your alma mater this dirty is crazy. Lost a lot of respect for how he conducts himself. Loser behavior.

    • 1
      2

It’s going a little too far to say “no school would have hired him” but in terms of P5 programs OSU was definitely one of the few at the time. Most were underwhelmed by the hire but I approved of it because he’d proven himself as an excellent play caller. Throw in the potential for the “loyalty to your alma-mater” and it became a no brainer. Any other coach would inevitably have immediately left after having success so why not take a shot on a guy who at least “might” stay if things actually go well. I guess we know now that they’ll all leave no matter what we do.

JS has done a great job building this program. That said, he’s one of the worst game coaches I’ve ever seen. I’m certain he’ll eventually get fired at MSU. He never seems to learn from mistakes and when he does stupid shot at MSU, they won’t be as forgiving.

If he wants to entertain other jobs, so be it but have the decency to wait until after CW week. Team was not prepared and appeared distracted. This team under performed throughout the year. Should have been 11-1… or 9-3 worst case. That’s on JS. He’s also responsible for leaving the program in shambles by how he handled all of this. I expected more from him. The kids deserved better. When Beaver Nation needed him the most, he bailed and did so in deplorable fashion. He legacy if forever tarnished IMO. In 5 years he’ll be an offensive coordinator but we should never bring him back to Oregon State.

  52. So how do we view Smith if he decides to stay but has totally disrupted the season by admitting to look elsewhere and interviewing already with other schools?

Is it to be expected by all of the OSU coaches for the rest of the school year due to the PAC12 implosion?

    • I think people will mostly forget. I’d say the casual Beav fan didn’t even know about the MSU news until yesterday, several of my friends/alums did not know. If he leaves, it better be for a top level job with top 10 money. Otherwise it’s a lateral move which will look terrible.

      • MSU isn’t lateral obviously but it is not a top 10 job by any stretch. It’s a stepping stone just like OSU is. If Smith does well there he’ll use them just like he used the Beavs to get to a true top 10 school or the NFL. Didn’t think he was one of those sociopathically ambitious guys but I guess he’s just like all the rest.

      • I agree with you. If he is looking and has interviewed, it does make sense but he hasn’t held himself to his own request with the team to focus for 4 months and not be distracted.
I’d prefer he swing for the fences and wait for a bigger opportunity. He is simply trading OSU for a worse situation with less chance to have a special season for a lot of money.
It was a horrible look and sounded terrible for him to admit he is paying his agent a lot of money to keep tabs on job opportunities in the midst of this season. OSU isn’t the dream job anymore. I wonder what his dream job is next…

OSU will struggle to ever be more than a stepping stone job from now on and maybe that is a good thing.

Last caller on post game show said that Barnes has a clause in his contract that stipulates he continues with his same salary even if OSU “ever loses P5 status”. Can anyone check that and see if it is true?
Barnes is as bad as George K if true. He could just be posturing all along and creating PR pressure for JS and the staff to stay and take pay cuts to get through this 2 year window while he has already assured himself security no matter the outcome.

Barnes should be challenged on his contract. I’m about done with OSU sports because there seems to be no end in how many times an OSU fan can get kicked in the gut.

Exactly. Yes, obviously Smith’s agent is doing his job haha. But Smith could publicly take himself out of consideration. It’s very odd for him to jump at the first mediocre upgrade when there may be openings soon at Michigan and Penn State as well. Smith apparently doesn’t have that level of confidence in himself.

  53. This is likely the career defining decision for JS. He saw firsthand as a player, Riley leaving for the NFL. He saw as a graduate assistant at OSU, Erickson leaving for the NFL.

We are entering the desired end for OSU sports that the OSU administration has wanted and in fact worked towards all of these years. It has been obvious that sports are an afterthought and in their minds a distraction from academic endeavors. Sports are unimportant to an institution of higher education, in their view. This is the way decisions have been made for 50 years at OSU. Sports are not a priority and won’t get help from the academic side.

If Smith wants to go then it’s fine by me. Not the best way to do it but its plain MS got out in front in the race to get time with the best coaches available. That means before the season is over. It’s a cutthroat buisness, and we all know it, so people are going to always be trying to poach him and others like him.
It’s a good way to get leverage in the ongoing talks with Barnes. He may be also trying to get a raise for his staff. There are coaches he needs to keep , and that starts with coach M and Bray. Everything now is just speculation which combined with the disappointment of what might have been just compounds the angst. I agree with others here- a new offensive coordinator is needed.

    • Very true that it’s just the way of the sports world. But this is leaving a program in a lurch more than any other ever has. Smith is treating this like a true sinking ship. Like his career could never overcome what is ahead of us. If he was actually a great coach it should actually be an even bigger resume builder. If he was able to hold most of the roster together then he’d be able to coach with an actual talent advantage against his competition. Everyone would be praising him to no end for succeeding in a difficult scenario but in reality it wouldn’t even be that difficult.
