Home Football Stanford @ Oregon State (Pre-Game)

Stanford @ Oregon State (Pre-Game)

202

This is from my interview with Hank Waddles of gomightycard.com. He'll have the interview up later today if you want to check it out.

Oregon State's season has been something of a disappointment, but it seems like there's more going on than just the early injury to quarterback Ryan Katz. What's really going on here?

It’s hard to say. What we know is that Ryan Katz broke his wrist in the 2010 Civil War and the diagnosis took months. Barney Graff, the trainer at the time (who has since been replaced), took heat for it. It also became known that many players distrusted Graff and would routinely receive second opinions. Now, one could speculate that Katz said something about Graff that soured the coaches, but OSU is tight-lipped on those issues. Also, there were chemistry issues last year between Jacquizz Rodgers and his offensive line. He called them out late in the year. Considering Katz played behind the same line, was constantly pressured or sacked, and wound up injured, it’s not a leap to think he called them out, too. That never became public, however. It’s also possible Riley just liked Sean Mannion’s upside. That’s what the media prints, and that’s what Riley says. Given Mannion’s play, I can see why Riley would prefer him. He’s raw and makes mistakes right now, but his potential is great.

Freshman quarterback Sean Mannion has had some great games, particularly in the win over Washington State. What are his strengths as a quarterback, and how worried should Katz be about his starting job?

Well, barring injury, Katz is done at OSU. Word is he will transfer to Portland State next year so he doesn’t have to sit out a season. Sean Mannion’s best trait is his poise. After a sack or interception, he doesn’t sulk or show poor body language (traits of Katz). Instead, he gets right back up firing. Besides that intangible, his best traits are his accuracy and quick decision making. For a freshman he really goes through progressions well and understands the check down relatively well. His arm strength is good but not elite, and he can evade the rush surprisingly well for a man his size. His one downside is turnovers, but if you watch the games, you’d see these are not always his fault. By next season, Mannion could be the conferences next Andrew Luck. He has those tools; he just needs better offensive line play in front of him.

Oregon State ranks near the bottom of the nation in rushing yardage, and Stanford's run defense has been a strength all season long. Can we expect to see a one-dimensional offense from the Beavers, or will they try to stay balanced?

Riley always preaches balance. He’ll try it, but he won’t succeed. OSU’s offensive line is much better at pass protection, and the Beavers running backs all have their issues. Terron Ward is small, a step slow, and gets overwhelmed by blitzing LBs. Malcolm Agnew is quick and shows great potential, but he can’t hang onto the ball. Jovan Stevenson is actually the most complete back, but he’s been injured. I don’t see the Beavers running the ball well, and if they do, expect to see Agnew turn it over at inopportune times.

It's no secret that the Stanford defense is vulnerable against fast, athletic wide receivers. How worried should Stanford fans be about Markus Wheaton and the rest of OSU's wideouts?

Moderately worried. It is OSU’s lone advantage in this game (well, besides kick coverage). The problem is…OSU will not be able to run. Stanford won’t have to stack the box to stop them. Stanford will then blitz, and Mannion will be forced into quick reads where he’s erred in the past. Besides Markus Wheaton, Brandin Cooks is another deep threat. James Rodgers and Jordan Bishop round out a great WR corp.

Defensively, how will the Beavers attack Andrew Luck and the Stanford offense?

They definitely should blitz Luck, run stunts, and let their safety act as a rover who cheats toward Stanford’s best WR. But then again, they should have put eight in the box versus Utah, and they didn’t do that. If they let Luck stand back there, he will kill them. The CBs are simply not good enough to hold coverage more than two seconds. Defensive coordinator, Mark Banker, has lost his touch. All season, his defense has looked slow, antiquated, and flat out confused. He plays a base 4-3 with the CBs on an island. One would think in such a system LBs would play freely and blitz often, but they don’t. On many plays the LBs are out of the equation entirely, playing 10 yards downfield or completely out of position. Beaver fans have lost all confidence in Banker’s scheming and rightfully so. Apologists claim the defense is young. It’s not really true, and further, the upperclassmen on this unit have been a huge disappointment.

Stanford fans, of course, see this as a dangerous trap game since it comes the week after an emotionally and physically taxing win on the road at USC and a week before the biggest game on the schedule against Oregon. Give me a scenario in which Oregon State pulls the upset.

Much like Oregon State/USC in 2006, the only way Oregon State pulls the upset is if Stanford gives them the game. It would require a +2 turnover margin with those turnovers converted into touchdowns. What OSU needs to do: play a physical game, win the turnover battle, score TDs rather than FGs, use their solid kick return game to shift position/get easier scores, use their speed advantage at WR, and blitz/rattle Andrew Luck.

Finally, what's your prediction? How do you expect the game to play out, and what will the final score be?

I don’t love Stanford’s team this year, mainly due to (a) lack of defensive speed and (b) the change at head coach. Harbaugh was a game changing motivator. I don’t see Shaw as that guy, so there’s some vulnerability there. But, since they have Andrew Luck and the remnants of Harbaugh’s physical mindset, I love Stanford in this game. It’ll be something like 41-17. OSU could theoretically put up 30 on Stanford, but a lot would have to go right. My guess is that OSU will come out and go through the motions, completely expecting to lose. I don’t think we’ll see a USC ’06 performance where they came out ready to not only play that game but win it.

That being said, if I were a Stanford fan, I’d be worried about one thing: OSU always has one unexplainable, unforeseeable, shocking upset per year. They haven’t had it yet, and the season is nearing an end. Signs of this would be the Beavs coming out and hitting hard/playing fast from the get go, maybe catching early momentum and the fan base thriving off that. OSU is not going bowling this year, so this game and the Civil War are their bowl games. If they’re going to put forth their best performance, it’ll be in these two games. Had I any faith in Riley and Banker scheming Stanford, I might actually pick them in an upset for the reasons just mentioned. My negative prediction is an indictment on the coaching staff and their lack of preparation, urgency, and passion; in addition to their inability to scheme for a given opponent.

  1. Your thoughts are appreciated Angry, can’t disagree at all. The utilization of LB’s is particularly disappointing and now news from Buker that Unga is likely out for the season.

“Signs of (a potential upset) would be the Beavs coming out and hitting hard/playing fast from the get go” So true and, based on this coaching approach, so very unlikely. I can’t even remember a time this year when the O hustled back to the huddle with a sense of purpose and fire.

  2. I like all that was said. IF (big if) the Beavs are in this thing at the end, I can’t imagine them not having a major breakdown and blowing that opportunity. They will do something inexplicable. I think they expect to, and teams playing them know it will happen. You can almost game plan around it! ;)

  3. Time for that wholly irrational feeling to take over again. I didn’t make picks for either Utah team because I think coaching has let this team down. But this is a player’s game. It is their bowl game. Despite coaching, this game will play out like OSU @ UW did last year. The home team will inexplicably jump out to a large lead, and the visitors will storm back in the end to force OT and the inevitable win they will get by “escaping” for the second week in a row…

… except Joe gets the fake over the middle, and Mannion hits James on the slant this time.

Beavs win in the first OT… 39-38.

    • I think you’re right about one thing: this is a player’s game/it’s their bowl game.

It makes me want to pick the Beavs, but coaching will get in the way of their success. Plus Stanford’s Dline will overwhelm Remmers and Co. I don’t see the Beavs rushing for over 30 yards this game (unless they commit to the fly sweep, then bump it to 60 yards).

      • Well, I have nothing to lose. And neither do the players.

On a side note, I’m interested in our starting o-line for this game:
Remmers, Andrews, Garner, Enger and Kelly

If we go with two-TE sets, we might see some daylight in this game. I don’t expect much, but I think we can surprise them early with some inspired play.

In the interview, it sounded like the SU guy had no idea why Mannion was the QB. He was looking for a QB controversy based on his belief Mannion came in for an injured Katz, and Katz would be back at some point.

        • Enger looked bad last game… I don’t know if it was the shock of moving to the right side or what. Garner was a slight upgrade over the injured Johnson which isn’t saying a lot. Maybe with the extra half of time together they pick it up but I am not overly optimistic.

      • It IS a player’s game. And who are our players?

Remmers. RR. Reynolds. All our safeties. Fumblitis Agnew.

I don’t think a game is winnable when we have about 8 legit players on the entire team. So as much as I irrationally want to believe in an upset, our upset teams were always much better than this, and some of those USC teams were not as good as people thought(Sanchize!!!).

Better off hoping we get annihilated. A win just prolongs the suffering.

        • To say that those USC teams were not as good as people thought is a silly statement of revisionist history. Those teams that we beat were full of NFL talent. They were darn good teams. Better defenses than any in the PAC12 now. I agree that our defense and OL was much better on those upset teams, but don’t revise the history of the effort that it took for us to beat them.

Actually those upsets could really be looked at as why Banker needs to go. Banker sold out to beat those USC teams. It looks to me that he had a belief that if he set up a defense that could stop USC, then it should be able to beat anyone. USC never has had a QB that likes to run, so when 1/2 the teams we play have a QB that likes to take off – our D is not able to adapt. Just thinking out loud here.

  4. This game has all the makings of Stanford taking the Beavers to the woodshed and I think they will do just that. The Beavers have an advantage at WR but how much will they get to utilize them? Stanford averages over 3 sacks/gm and faces a O-Line that just gave up 6 sacks to Utah. Stanford’s D-Line will overwhelm the Beavers offensive line all day long. This will force Mannion to, far too often throw off his back foot and this will cause him to throw a couple interceptions. It will be a long day for the offense from the opening kickoff.

The defense will be torched all game. Stanford can probably run for 300+ yards on the ground if they wanted to. The Beavers defense will be pushed around by the Cardinal offensive line. Then, when the Beavers sell out for the run Andrew Luck will pick apart their defense through the air. No matter how I look at this game I just cannot possibly see how the Beavers can win this one. Stanford is better in all three phases. They should win this game easily.

I got the Cardinal winning 48-14

    • I like the spirit and BELIEF…in us having a great game in us….but I cant see it. Stanford is freakin good, and with that running game, and Luck passing when he feels like it, I cant imagine us getting the upset. Just being fairly competitive would be a huge upset.

With UO, though, I might see it. Their defense is porous and if we could REALLY get it going offensively, and they have an offensive letdown, it might get done. Assume for a moment that they get beat by Stanford, and cant go to the championship game, and will do a lesser bowl…that might be a letdown for them and they dont play as hard.

Then again, with our coaching, UO might score in triple digits…

      • Does anybody seriously believe Oregon can score in the triple digits? I see that comment pasted on various message boards but give me a break people, they will never score 100+ in a game. We would have to turn the ball over nearly every time we have possession in order for that to happen.

        • Oklahoma, Georgia Tech, Tulsa, Arizona and Bowling Green have scored over 150 in a game. There have been two games where a team scored over 200.

If UO did 2 pt conversions, they would need to score a TD every 4 1/2 minutes or so. If we went 3 and out almost every time, which is conceivable, they could do it.

          in 1968 Houston-Tulsa, two D1 schools, was 100-6…

in 2007 Navy and North Texas were 49-45 at the half….both could have scored over a hundred if they had scored at a slightly faster rate in the second half….

So dont think UO cant do it. …And they would NEVER let us forget it…

          • You’re talking about a UO team that will be playing their last game of the season before going to a bowl game. They’re not going to keep the 1st or 2nd stringers in the game if they get up by 30-40 pts and they’re not gong to risk injuring anybody else playing a hurry up tempo. It’s not going to happen.

          • Sure, its unlikely….but remember that the BCS computers determine who gets in the NC game….and a huge score might be just the thing UO needs. So dont predict what Kelley does about running up a score.

            But yes, its unlikely…

  5. Where did the Ryan Katz to PSU rumor originate? I floated it out there in an oregonlive chat the other day, but nothing was supported by evidence. Has there been any real talk about this being a possiblitiy?

  6. All signs point to a major beat-down. Who would have though Stanford would become the schoolyard bully. You have to hand it Harbough, even if he is kind of an A-hole. I really like how they play on offense. No reason we couldn’t be doing things the same way. Well I guess there is that little matter of reminding the coaching staff that you have to RECRUIT o-lineman rather than pull them off a barstool at Clodfelters.

  7. If it was Oregon, I’d put

    “Always
    Bitchin’ and
    Complainin’!”

    What about this one?!

    “Away with
    Both
    Coordinators!!”

  8. This is such a tough game to call. If the players come out fired up, anything could happen. Especially since Stanford is so beat up from last week. I could see the Beavers hanging on for the win. We should know about the middle of the second quarter. My prediction 38-28 Beavers..

  9. Do see want the upset to happen as fans, or do we want our team to get blown out so that it reflects negatively on the defensive and offensive coordinators? Or are they already in trouble with being inconsistent?

    • I want an upset badly. I think all Beaver fans want a win over Stanford. I want something to get excited about this year. It’s been painful to watch this season. An upset won’t give the staff a break. Fans may be even more pissed that the team lost to Utah and UCLA if the team can beat the Cardinal. The team starting 2-6 and looking awful is still bigger than just winning one game and improving.

      • The staff isn’t getting off the hook no matter what happens in the next 4 weeks. BB21’s point is right on, fans already see the uninspired performances in the losses as clear evidence of the inability of this staff to inspire, plan, and execute. Those shortcomings would only be highlighted by a victory against either Furd or the Ducks.

        • We should never again forget the limitations of this staff…no matter what happens. Always think back to that chess/tactic post I made. That will never change. Riley will never understand leverage or positioning for the greatest advantage.

One thing we haven’t harped on is in-game management. His misuse of timeouts, failure to ever challenge calls, and clock management (e.g. never employing the hurry up offense) are all horrible. It puts the Beavs at a disadvantage in every game.

Even if the Beavers beat Stanford…this will not change. A 58 year old man is not going to change.

  10. Great job with the interview, Angry.

As for Saturday’s game, the good news is that Beaver weather is predicted (rainy and chilly). The other good news is that, from what I have been seeing on Twitter, OSU’s players will be coming in with the right attitude (shock the world, no one except us believes in this team, circle the wagons, etc.)

Tale of the tape could not be clearer: Stanford scores 49.5 points per game (the Beavers 23.0). Stanford gives up 17 points per game (the Beavers 30). Stanford has won 16 consecutive games (currently the longest FBS win streak). Beavs for the last 16 games…..

Okay, let’s admit that it will take a miracle for OSU to win Saturday’s game. Even if we stop Stanford’s running game (highly unlikely), we will have to deal with Andrew Luck’s passing AND Luck’s ability to take off and run when chased from the pocket (something Banker has no clue how to defend). Our only chance is that Stanford (a very smart team) stops itself with dumb turnovers, penalties, and other mistakes. Meanwhile, Mannion and Agnew need to avoid turnovers for a change. And our O-line needs to protect Mannion long enough for him to find open receivers downfield, in the face of one of the nation’s best pass rushing teams. Probably not going to happen, right?

    Conclusion: Beavs 31 Stanford 30

      • I remember friends who didn’t bother going to Reser on the night of September 25, 2008 because OSU had “less than zero chance” against #1 USC. That night still glows in my memory as the single most exciting sports event I have ever attended. I was hoarse for a full week after that, and so were 40,000 other people around town. Can’t help hoping that lightning might strike again this Saturday at Reser (even if it’s pure hope, with no rational basis). Meanwhile, the fact that it really COULD happen (however unlikely) is what makes sports so great….

        • Before that game, I couldn’t care less about football. Was my senior year at OSU and I’d been to maybe 2 games previously. At the time I couldn’t have named a single beaver player. My friends talked me into going…and my experience was a lot like silverstream’s. Just phenomenal…made a football fan (fanatic?) out of me overnight.

    • I think stanford will keep pace with their averages. They’ll score around 50 and OSU less than 20. Probably closer to 13.

There is NO WAY the beavers win this game. Sorry.

  11. Hope that Stanford is tired from last week, looking ahead to Oregon, such that Beavs get BIG upset, then Stanford gets motivated and dominates Ducks….who Beavs also upset.

What’s happening here it sounds like is people are straying from probabilities and focusing on possibilities. In other words, being fans of a losing team.

      • You can believe that Riley is capable of winning games when there’s no pressure, and mostly incapable when the pressure is high. I think the rare exception to winning a “pressure game” was the win at Az a few years back, right at the end of the game, that kept OSU in the Rose Bowl hunt. I think they held Az to 17 points after Az had put up some 40 points in a losing effort to Oregon the week before in Autzen. However, the next game, with the pressure amped up and OSU’s opportunity to get to the Rose Bowl, Riley lost to Oregon.

    • It could happen. I think the goose has already been cooked and that changes will occur barring some miracle leading us to get to a bowl game. I agree with Angry, we are overdue for our yearly upset.

    • “What’s happening here it sounds like is people are straying from probabilities and focusing on possibilities. In other words, being fans of a losing team.”

Yes, that’s exactly it. But it’s kind of fun, in its own sick way…..

    • I’m not a Canzano hater but this article was lazy and uninspired. He just took the average post from any beaver blog and posted it as his own thoughts. I disagree with his premise that the Beavs need to scrap their whole offense, they don’t need to totally redefine who they are – they just need to be better at what they are. Starts with recruiting, then better game planning, better play calling, and finally they need to adjust things in-game that aren’t working.

      • Thank you.

And he doesn’t even get the gripe right. Yeah… the O is boring and stale. That’s what O does. They just manage. Defense wins championships… always and forever.

  12. Interesting (and I haven’t the vaguest idea who Hank Waddles is) that he would choose to interview angry instead of a beat reporter. I heartily approve – just curious.

  13. I actually think Washington can beat the Ducks this weekend.

Game is @ Washington, which will be a crazy atmosphere
    Rivalry game (see above)
    Washington can move the ball
Washington has a bad defense, but Holt will have a good scheme and Sark will have them ready to play. Their defensive depth appears interchangeable, so I’m not convinced Oregon can wear them out in the second half.

I’m going with Washington in a shocker.

    • I think it’s hard to tell who wins. I feel Oregon will win but it’s a home night game at Husky Stadium and the Huskies will come out fired up. They have a horrible defense but teams in those situations have a tendency to play over their head the first quarter and a half. I think Washington jumps out early but Oregon eventually gets it going and it’s tied going into the fourth. However, if Darron turns it over and forces the ball like he did last week the Huskies will win. This will be a shootout. If Oregon doesn’t turn it over I think they win 45-34, if the Ducks turn it over 2 or more times I think UW wins 45-38.

It’s a game that could go many ways. I still think Oregon has the edge but their defense has to make some plays in the second half to hold off the Huskies. Should be an entertaining game. I don’t really care who wins, both fanbases are annoying. I do thoroughly enjoy seeing both fanbases call each other arrogant. Hilarious stuff. Ultimate pot meet kettle situation.

    • I would not be shocked if UW won. UO played poorly against WSU, and I think they’re overrated.

However, I would not be shocked if UO won either, because I think Kelly can outcoach Sark.

Wouldn’t it be fun if UO lost to UW, Stanford, and OSU….

  14. I will be at the game wearing a bag over my head for all 60 minutes because of how far we have fallen to a truly poorly coached and patheticly motivated team. It’s the coaches people. Riley and Co. are just going through the motions and each week express as much confidence as screw-off freshman before they fail their finals.

  15. Buker tweeting that BeaverBlitz is reporting Beavs have offered Juco wide receiver Alonzo Agwuenu. Supposedly he’s “one of the hottest prospects in the nation.” I don’t see much buzz online about him, but like his size at 6’4″ 205lbs. Looks like he was offered a couple years ago by Oregon but ended up at Mt San Antonio Community college for the last 2 years. During that time he’s grown a couple inches and put on about 30 lbs. Can’t find much in the way of video.

  16. Hi BN; It’s me again the old and future coach. Only three more weeks until the big re-hiring! 11-26-11 after the Duck loss err… game.

I was going to the Stanford game but I’ve done the cold, rainy, windy, defensive breakdowns, interceptions, bad-tackling, fumbles, penalties and a one-sided ass kicking in an emptying stadium, to death. In fact, I invented that whole game. So I don’t need to sit through a re-play.

If the Beavers are dumb enough to have recruits at the Stanford game, Idaho, Montana and Utah State can expect a flurry of verbal commitments from their respective lists of 1 star prospects on Sunday evening.

I will be at Jeld-Wen Field, in Portland, for the Sac. State vs. PSU game. I expect to see some modern innovative football in a comfortable, roofed stadium while sipping a (non-smuggled) micro-brew. It’s always good to add new… what does Riley call it? “Stuff” to your coaching repertoire.

“O….S….U.. (wave arms like a spaz)…Bites…Bites….Bites” I love that, we’ll keep it next year. JB

PS: Just In!! PAC12 Tool of the Week….JackBeav!! CONGRATS (ding)

    • I don’t read these posts anymore, but I think it’s funny how much time you waste not being funny. Seems like a really good use of your time. Keep it up.

      • “… I think it’s funny how much time you waste not being funny.”

Just think of him as an idiot savant in this regard.

But I really wonder why he predicts that the Beavs will beat the Ducks in his first… well… paragraph-shaped grouping of a greeting, a lousy sentence and two sentence fragments. That opening was so bad, it killed the buzz right off the bat.

I’ve got news for you PBH. You’re beyond silly for predicting something like a Duck loss in the CW. Many of us hope for that outcome, but I think very few of us will actually make that prediction ourselves.

  17. Here’s a few opinions (all from a financial…err…entertainment POV): ESPN’s Insider-

Stanford Cardinal (minus-21) at Oregon State Beavers: It’s a classic sandwich game for the Cardinal, who are off a draining triple-overtime win at the Coliseum and have the Oregon showdown on deck. Even subpar Oregon State teams make dangerous home underdogs, and three touchdowns is too much to lay in a place Stanford hasn’t ever had much success.

    Stanford 35, Oregon State 24

From my Covers.com site: Copy and pasted from some of my respected cappers on there…

    1) fade stanford off that huge win. even luck creamed his seersuckers after that win. they are going to be coming in on a cloud.

    2) As good of a spot as youll see in college football.

Lucky ass win vs USC with Oregon deck. Oregon State’s super bowl and Riley’s teams usually start rolling ats right about now

+21.5 locked. Line is a joke and will plummet imo so I bet you can try to middle on the 21 if you are buying the Luck hype

MY OPINION: Stanford 48-14…and Bama gonna whup LSU….

  18. I am sorry. This will be really ugly: 65-10 Stanford. Let’s hope that that 3OT last week tired them out. Luck will rip our secondary. I also think Oregon will roll up in seattle. They will beat UW by at least 20. The Husky D is awful and while Oregon is not a great defensive team, they seem to keep lock teams up in the red zone. Their special teams are also looking really good the last few weeks. I think this weekend could be rough for Beaver Nation.

    • I was at the Elway game in 81, and witnessed a 63-9 beatdown. good thing I was roomies with some of the football players back in the day, and my family took them out to a nice dinner afterwards.

  19. I attended last year’s 38-0 debacle at Stanford stadium and I can tell you that there was absolutely nothing to cheer about if you were a Beaver fan, except when the game was mercifully finally over. There is absolutely no reason to feel that the result will be any different this year, except that the Beavers may actually score a few points, but not many. I predict a lopsided Stanford victory, I am sorry to say, but I have to be realistic about this one.

  20. This just in from Matt Hayes of The Sporting News:

Stanford 30, Oregon State 27: A dangerous spot for the Cardinal – a week after a draining triple-overtime win at USC, and a week before a huge showdown vs. Oregon. Yep, Oregon State just lost last week to Utah. Doesn’t matter; this will be close until the last series.

Maybe Matt Hayes got wind of Banker’s plan to start Dylan Wynn at MLB for Saturday’s game….

  21. Just heard that Jordan Bishop is out Saturday, and will be replaced by Kevin Cummings. KC really impressed me during Fall camp. Glad KC is finally getting a chance to play, beyond occasional spot duty. Looking forward to watching KC at Reser on Saturday — expect he will do well.

  22. I think this will be a good game, the only time Banker and Langsdorf actually somewhat do quite well is on big games, hence they actually plan.

  23. Time for Phil Steele’s breakdown:

Sandwich game for the Cardinal as they are coming off a 3OT victory over USC (trailed most of the 2nd half, had not trailed all season coming in) and have the all important meeting with Oregon on deck. The half point cover for the Cardinal now moves their ATS streak to an amazing 11 straight while they also hold the nation’s longest winning streak at 16. The Beavers meanwhile coughed up the ball 4 times and saw QB Mannion sacked on 6 occasions in a 27-8 loss at Utah. Prior to last year Oregon State had outgained Stanford in each of the previous 10 years by an avg of 452-268! Key mismatch will be Heisman hopeful QB Luck (305 yards passing in last year’s game) going up against the #9 set of DB’s in Pac-12 (allowing 222 yards per game this year, 64%, 17-7 ratio). Last year Stanford had a +5 turnover edge but allowed no Oregon State drive further than the Stanford 32 and rolled to a 38-0 home win (-13’) delivering yet another Early Bird Play of the Week winner for the Comp Phone (1st time Oregon State was shutout Since 2002). Stanford hasn’t won back-to-back games in this series since 1994 and 1995 and the home team is 4-0 SU/ATS with 2 outright upsets which could keep this one close early on before the Cardinal once again pull ahead in the 2nd half with substantial edges on both offense (#5-61) and defense (#15-67).

FORECAST: Stanford 41 OREGON STATE 24

  24. Maybe Phil Simm’s arm strength comments have pissed Luck off and he tries to do too much and Poyer picks him a couple of times or maybe it just pissed him off enough that he totally toasts the suspect Beaver secondary.

  25. It’s bizarro world stuff thinking about how good Stanford has become, it was just two years ago that the Beavs beat down the sophomore Luck and Toby Gearhart as a pissed off Jacquizz had to put the P-10 RB pecking order back in place. I don’t see it with this team, who’s pissed off and talented enough to make a difference?

    Stanford 38
    OSU 17

  26. I don’t know where all the confidence is coming from that say the Beavers will actually score. Last year 35-0. Last week they scored one TD and failed on the 2 pt. Miracles do happen. Maybe they will make a movie about the game along the lines of the 1980 USA hockey team. In 2008 the Beavs did something great in beating SC, but it wasn’t a fluke. They went on to be one game away from the Rose Bowl. Was Langsdorf calling plays in 2008? Did Banker know to stack the box against against a running team with no QB? Maybe there has been an invasion of the “Coach Snatchers”. Something has changed. Very strange behavior, laughing during a loss, 4th and 1 on the 2 and look like they are waiting for a bus.
I did enjoy the WSU game, but since were not playing WSU, then Stanford 49 – Beavs 3.

      • Btw… ERR… it’s… ERR… “er.” The reason you can get away with using ummmm as a filler in writing is because adding m’s to um does not create an actual word with an actual meaning.

You err when you add an r to er.

  28. Angry, you are right on about position recruiting for dt, lg and db. There is a very good playmaker and safety prospect in Tanner Trosin young brother of Tyler. He could be a more athletic version of John Boyett.

      • He is a qb like Boyett was. But he was a playmaking db last year and as a sophmore and also was the backup qb as a junior. He might get some recruiting action as a qb. But bottom line is that he is a very athletic, he is a winner, and can make plays from a variety of positions. He could be qb of the defensive backfield.

  29. Grady Garrett of OSU’s Daily Barometer goes (very) negative on this year’s OSU football team. The following quote is representative of the article as a whole:

“Oregon State has no chance. At least, that’s the vibe around campus. The fact that so many students don’t even care to be present for a potential historical win speaks volumes.”
    http://www.dailybarometer.com/nail-in-the-coffin-1.2683642#.TrQxgPQUqsr

Dylan Wynn responded (sarcastically) in a tweet a few minutes ago:

“Grady garrett~ if I wanted to be bashed by an article, id follow a rival teams newspaper.U got a bright future as a writer man.”

Here’s hoping that Wynn and his teammates take Garrett’s article the right way — as additional motivation to “shock the world” tomorrow at Reser against big, bad, overconfident Stanford.

  30. I see this game just a little more lopsided than Angry. I don’t think we will be in it by the last third of the 1st quarter. Then we will start getting pass happy again. I also expect Remmers to have his expected two false starts per game and that won’t help to keep the offense moving or give the defense more rest. Riley usually likes to get embarassed and set the program back when we have good TV coverage so I will go with him and the coordinators putting forth a poor showing and OSU having next to no chance of avoiding 2-7.

    OSU. vs. Stanford Preview:
    http://beaverbyte.com

    • Me too…..after watching Stanford do just a series of run plays, to score one of the OT touchdowns, I cant see us stopping them at all. TD after TD…..

      • I’ve always been a fan of Jonathan and notice that he can think “outside the box”, for example he recently had two QB’s on the field for several plays. He surely knows Corvallis and, as the article points out, should be able to sell it to some recruits.

If jumping to OC in the PAC12 is too much, would it make sense to bring him in as QB coach and have Locey or Riley handle the OC chores?

Even though it would make a great story, you have to wonder if there isn’t an even better candidate out there. I don’t really know but Riley’s penchant for nepotism makes me think he could pick Smith over a more talented candidate and that would probably be better than what we have now.

In another vein, we will soon know if Riley kills or nurtures the talents and desires of a new generation of staff members. Will the potential of Brennan, Brasfield, and possibly Smith be fully developed under Riley? No doubt Riley has the desire to leave a legacy of outstanding coaches, desire alone can’t make it so.

      • THANK YOU for posting this article! This was very well written, and the points I tried to make were well thought out compared to mine.

With that note, you have to understand that Jonathan Smith has plenty of experience at coaching QB’s and only 2 years of “OC”, but how much longer are we willing to allow JS to “establish” himself as a great OC before he gets picked up by an FBS team that we’ll never see him at OSU and we’ll all be saying, “Dang it! Why didn’t we pick him up when people were talking about him!?!” OR the opposite could be said as well if he were to “flop” as an OC at the FBS level. So it’s a risk, but is it too big of a risk to give an Alumnus a chance to come back and coach at his Alma Mater? Isn’t that a fair thing to do? Nobody can be as bad as Langsdorf, right?!

      • I’d rather try Smith than go through another season with Langsdorf. I’ve never watched a Montana game, so I don’t know much about his offense. Maybe if I saw it I’d be more excited.

    • As I was reading that I was thinking either Riley or I must be on a different planet or there are parallel universes and one of us is moving in and out of this one. In other words he’s seeing something that I’m not seeing. I wish to hell he was right, but ……… I could take this a number of different ways but when I start thinking about what I’d write about I throw up a little bit in my mouth.

      Nuff said.

  31. From the O-Live Stanford-OSU preview:

“700 student tickets remained unclaimed on Thursday afternoon” for the game against Stanford….

    Amazing – even against a top 4 team and a heismann-candidate QB.

    • Isn’t that a good thing? I mean there is no incentive for OSU to get better if people still donate and go to the games. Seems like a lot of the folks around here don’t attend any games.

      • There are 3 reasons not to attend games:

        1) It’s a good way to protest against the program and the Athletic Department.

        2) It shows fans DO have a higher expectation and the fact that the team/coaches aren’t living up to that expectation is a good way to speak “volumes” through actions since voices won’t be heard by the AD.

        3) Not attending games/buying tickets isn’t worth my time/money when I’d be cheering for a losing cause.

However, there are 3 good reasons to attend games:

        1) Show support for the players and cheer them on and show we care about this program no matter how bad things get and do appear.

        2) To make it a fun environment for future recruits to see in that, “even though this team loses, the fans are still having a good time and makes the stadium atmosphere fun despite the losing effort.”

        3) Games are a good way to spend a Saturday especially since OSU generally always plays better at home than on the road.

  32. Beavers have no chance in Hell of winning this game. 53 to 0 Stanford. The reason being that Shaw and co actually scheme and watch film. Riley and friends are busy circle jerking and the players will be demoralized tomorrow on the field.

As much as I hate to say it but we almost need this to happen. Things don’t seem bad ENOUGH for some fans and I think only by looking more like the inept teams of the Dark Years might galvanize the bluebeards in the crowd. It won’t matter because we will see Mike Riley laugh the whole time.

Mike Riley is a class act.

  33. Thanks for sharing that article. I love Smith. He has that cocky, Chip Kelly-demeanor. Swagger that inspires players. I’d be all for that. He’s always been bright & a coach type guy. What type of offense does he run?

  34. Watching the USC – Colorado game on ESPN 3. The USC DBs, WRs etc look huge compared to the Colorado players. Looks like a college team playing a high school team.

    YIKES!!

    • Not surprising, honestly. The cupboard was pretty bare. I think in about 3 years they will be good, just takes time to build up the program again. Dan Hawkins really screwed the program.

  35. Basketball starts in about 10 minutes, and OSUBeavers.com says the game is free streaming, but no audio and just one camera.
Whatever, still better than watching us get spanked Saturday.

Contemplating posting the Youtube videos from Montana so far this season. But I’ll summarize by saying that his offense utilizes a lot of fake handoffs and deep routes, two things sorely missing from our offense. Also, Smith has learned three different offenses, whereas Langsdorf has only ever coached Pro-Style(Oregon State, the Saints, and the Chargers). Exposure to other systems alone makes Smith a superior candidate.

    • What I’ve liked is the suffocating D. They gotten their hands on so many passes and their passing against the zone and passing in general has been terrific. Pacific isn’t exactly great competition but I’ve liked what I’ve seen.

  36. First off, it’s so nice to have basketball back. Been needing my fix for some time, college, nba, whatever.

Second, Pacific is severely outmatched by any Pac 12 school, so it’s hard to get a good assessment of how this OSU team really looks.

Third, I like the up and down action and the quick outlet passes after rebound. I also like the guards giving pressure up the floor, but worry a little about cheap foul trouble with all the hand checking I’m seeing. We don’t have the guard depth necessary to play that way for a full game.

Fourth, I’m liking what I’m seeing from Collier and Brandt out there together. Nice to see them attacking the basket.

Fifth, this is only Pacific and just an exhibition. Need to keep that in mind. OSU is dominating, but they should be.

  37. Collier with the ugly fast break-travelling.

Also missed a bunch of FTs. I understand wanting him in the starting lineup for matchups, but he has some growth to do before I’ll feel comfortable with him.

Also, the Princeton offense is still “Pass it around for 30 seconds, hope someone gets open, or I jack up a last-second, contested 3.”

    • The fact that Collier is getting to the free throw line is a good sign though. Means we’re actually playing inside and being aggressive. Even with the missed free throws, you’re hurting the other team by drawing fouls. Even if you’re hitting 50% from the foul line, it’s still better than shooting less than 50% on jump shots and not drawing any fouls.

  38. Our team is doing this thing I’ve never seen before:

The opposing team will take a shot, and our players will use their bodies to push the opponent out of the way so that we can get a rebound.

It’s so crazy, it just might work!

  39. I’m not seeing the link for the game. Course my wife says I’m blind in one eye and can’t see out of the other.

Do you have to be a member of BeaverNation Online in order to be able to see the broadcast?

    TIA

  40. Starks tried to fly up the court, and completely lost the ball.

Not impressed with our ball security so far. I like the ball movement, but the passes themselves haven’t been very accurate.

    • Starks in general has tried to do too much. He tried to make a crazy pass to Brandt in the first half, who was trailing on the play. It got stolen obviously. My guess is since it’s an exhibition he has tried to put on a show. Collier hasn’t gotten a little too excited on fast breaks tonight. I think they’ll be more calm next Saturday.

    • Brandt looks like he’s overthinking things. He looks like he’s almost aiming his shots instead of just shooting the bal.

  41. Eric Moreland is quietly having a very solid night. Guy looks like an athlete and he’s only a freshman. I like what I’ve seen so far from him.

    • Moreland isn’t your typical freshman. He played in a couple games last year before getting hurt against Colorado. He has a chance to be an absolute beast on the boards. He’s extremely versatile. Can play SF and PF. He just looks smooth when he’s playing.

    • think it was Murphy with the nice put back dunk, then Jones fouled them on the inbound. Hard to follow some of the action on this live feed with no audio. game over.

  42. I was able only to see the last part of the game. Did the Beavers show any ability to work the ball inside, earlier? I only saw 3’s – nice, but . . .

    • Yes they did. I saw some really nice passes, especially some great high low passes from Burton to Collier. Normally against zones in previous years it would just be 5 guys standing around and someone jacking up shots. Burton did a nice job of getting into the middle and finding wide open guys for 3’s or going high low down inside to Brandt and Collier. There are plenty of things to work on, guys were rusty playing in their first game, but I saw a lot of positives. Guys sometimes got too flashy or too excited, but playing in a exhibition played some part in that. I think they will play much more calm against Bakersfield next Saturday. I love the potential of this squad.

    • I was literally just going to say the same thing. I only saw the last five minutes or so but I couldn’t help but notice that we were doing a lot of the same pass-the-ball-around-to-one-of-the-FOUR-guys-on-the-three-point-line stuff that we did all of last year. I realize that none of our starters were playing by this point, but for anyone that watched the whole game did it look like we were trying to move the ball inside and establish some kind of a post game?

    • Good. Obviously, there was rust with it being the first game and guys tried to get a little too flashy with it being an exhibition game, but there were good signs. A lot of in your face man-to-man and guys getting hands on passes all the time. At times the Beavers would just rip a ball away from a Pacific player and go on the fast break. It was fun to watch. Team will be a good shooting team from 3. Also, Burton has improved his passing. As we’ve seen the previous two years he has tried to kill guys with his passes, saw a softer touch tonight. He made some terrific high low passes to Collier and got after it on the boards. Very encouraging.

The team attacked a zone better than I have seen in years. Burton got in the middle which drew the defense, this allowed guys like Starks, Brandt and Cunningham to get open looks at a 3, he also would dump it down to Collier for dunks and forced Collier to be fouled. Definitely have seen improvement in a lot of areas. Rebounding looks better. Guys were playing much more fundamentally sound as far as grabbing rebounds. They were boxing guys out and going up strong for the boards.

Yes, Pacific is nowhere near D-1 caliber, but I saw a lot of improvements in a lot of areas. Really liked what I saw. Really excited for next Saturday’s game.

  43. So Roberto Nelson is leaving me unimpressed so far in his career. I had higher expectations based on the hype surrounding him, being the most highly rated recruit OSU has picked up since maybe Corey Benjamin. I’ve been hoping for a poor mans Brandon Roy type player, but tonight I saw him jacking up ill advised 3’s and not contributing in many other ways, other than picking up touch fouls in the full court press. For those who have seen him more, does he still show potential to live up to expectations?

    • I know he’s been dealing with an injury but he seemed kind of out of it. I would like the guy who was good against ASU to return. He can be too passive. He’s too good to just stand around and jack up 3’s. I almost feel like he doesn’t wanna come off as a selfish player, so he defers to Ahmad and Jared. He needs to shoot the rock and attack the rim. This will force defenders to back off and free up his 3 ball. Also, he needs to stop jacking up 26 footers. He needs to step closer and shoot his 3’s. No reason to be that far off the line.

I think he’ll be more aggressive against Bakersfield. The potential is there, he needs to be more selfish.

  44. Believe Beavs:

“Nobody is saying anything about it, because we are so focused on this season, but you can tell everyone has that feeling. We’re going to have something really special in another year or two.”

    • Capitalcause’s quote is from the Portland Tribune interview with Wynn: “Nobody is saying anything about it, because we are so focused on this season,” Wynn says with a nod. “But you can tell everyone has that feeling. We’re going to have something really special in another year or two.”

Wynn’s remark is linked to the young talent: “Crichton and Wynn bring stability at the D-end position for the next four years at Oregon State. They’re part of an exceptional freshman group that includes quarterback Sean Mannion, tailback Malcolm Agnew, receiver Brandin Cooks, safety Ryan Murphy and kicker Trevor Romaine, among others.”

One positive way to spin Wynn’s remark about something special is that there is a core of talent that is NOT adopting a loser mentality, a risk this past two seasons with a complacent coaching staff. One hopes they are not going to sit around and wait for victories, but are going to eliminate their youthful mistakes (fumbles, ints).

What I thought was interesting about his interview:

      1) Wynn said De La Salle is a “detail oriented” program, something OSU is not. But the benefits are clear in Wynn’s early effectiveness. This kid is good not because what OSU has done for him, but the habits is high school engrained in him and his obvious physical ability. Imagine if the spring/fall camps were detailed oriented – how many more players would be more effective sooner in their careers?

      2) He could have committed to Oklahoma State and played linebacker. Interesting that so many here suggest getting him on the field as a MLB and diversifying his role.

      3) This quote about committing to OSU was a little puzzling: “It came down to, in the worst times, where am I going to be able to handle that the best? That was Oregon State.”

Hopefully, this is the worst of times and it will get better.

      • Wynn is such a complete player that even questions about his size are frivolous. Pay sites who rated him anything but their highest marks vastly underrated him as a prospect. You can’t even drop the “diamond in the rough” monicker on him. His play in high school was precisely what it is now, and he will only get better.

  45. I don’t know want I want more, a Beavs win or The Tree to run the table. I hate the ducks and would hate to see them take the North. What are we playing for here? Another year of Riley’s piss poor coord. mishandling our team. I am believer and always will be but as a fan I don’t know how much I have left in the tank. I will be at the game looking for some covered seating room since I assume a lot of people won’t be going.

    Hoping for an upset!!

    • Sounds like a have your cake and eat it too situation here. If Stanford lost to Ostate today but beat Oregon next week, they’d still be Pac 12 north champs. (Assuming all other remaining games are wins for both teams). Not looking forward to the rain today either. I’m sure half the stadium will be looking for those covered spots with you. See you there.

      • That’s the best scenario. Throw in a UW upset tonight, and an OSU upset at Autzen…with one-loss Stanford (at Oregon State) playing in a BCS game and representing the Pac-12 well.

Bowl-less Beavs than can recruit hard, maintian their current crop of recruits, gain some quality DT, safety, CB commits….

Oh, the hopes and expectations of a losing season.

  46. If the Beavs have the slightest chance of being in the game today Sean Mannion MUST be protected… Remmer’s better have the day like he did USC last year, and Agnew and Ward better be Jaquizz Rodgers out there today.

    • Agreed. Heading out to the game with my kids in two minutes. Weather looks bad — here’s hoping it gets worse by gametime (since a sloppy field usually works in favor of the weaker team).

Everything else is stacked against the Beavs today. Odds are that the Beavs get blown out early and badly. But strange things have been known to happen in college football games (and in particular at Reser Stadium). Here’s hoping that this is one of those days…..

  47. On Gameday this morning they had nothing good to say about Riley’s current ability to lead his team. Herbstreet, Corso and Desmond Howard all said they thought Stanford would “Win Big”. Corso said “Not close, not close at all”. Then Chris Fowler said OSU was ‘hoping’ and Desmond said “you can always hope” and rolled his eyes like that is all Riley has done this year. All of them acted like Riley should be on the hot seat if he doesn’t care to do more than just hope and earn more wins this year.
