The Oregon media is once again spinning Riley's nepotism as a good thing.
Riley hires his buddy Rod Perry, and now Perry has two of his kids running around practice. This is a good thing why? I can think of many reasons why it's not good, the most obvious being that work and family are two different things (heck, many companies won't even hire a husband & wife because it's too comfortable and distracts from work).
Lindsay Schnell is quickly becoming the worst reporter at The Oregonian.
Becoming? If I had to place her as a character in Office Space it would be as a manager at Chotchkie’s. The restaurant is a fair comparison to the rag she’s working for, and she would quickly rise to the top because she’s all about flair (and the bosses seem to reward that over all else).
Give her credit, though – the whole “family angle” has never been written about.
Still, if you want to go with younger generation on the sidelines, go with the cute kids. Oh, wait, she did when she wrote about Marty Lees kids, Brandon, Brady, and Jake a year ago. (Of course, the Lees by then had all put in plenty of time to become a real part of the family, and fixtures at the park.)
She came, she saw, she tweeted. BFD.
I think the Oregonian has known this about Lindsay for awhile. This is why she’s been demoted from covering the Ducks to the Beavers. O-live thought they had their own Erin Andrews but quickly found out the fans weren’t buying it.
Trent Bray used to hang out with his dad at WSU. That really didn’t seem to be an issue for eitiher. Issac was at OSU practices for years. That worked well for OSU.
There are big issues with OSU football. Dads bringing their kids to practice is not one of them.
I totally agree with you. My only problem is with the reporting on this stuff rather than the important lack of a football “identity”.
Is it a demotion going from Ducks to Beavs? How do you cover the Ducks anyway? Stand around and wait for a surly Chipster to talk to you for 5 minutes. Maybe she gets to hear from all the tweaker Springfield fans, that’d be fun.

It’s a demotion because people actually follow the Ducks. If you were a reporter, would you rather have a job full of easy to attain soundbites with 100K readers, or a job where you actually had to try a little, and your work was read by 1M readers? Not saying that’s the ratio, but you get my point.
In my opinion, she is already the worst. I typically will just skip past her “articles” and save myself the annoyance.
I remember 2 summers ago when she was reporting on the field OSU painted Blue for the Boise State game. She put together a video report and wearing her giant Paris Hilton sunglasses and pushing back her hair as the wind blew it around. She lost me at sunglasses….who reports with sunglasses on?

Pretty much all coaches bring their sons who are of age (10+) to practices to serve as ball boys or to interact with players and to stay connected with their kids. Sports are way different job than a 40hr job.
Coaches are off recruiting during the summer and are basically non accesible during the season. Having kids around practice is a way for them to spend time with their kids. It’s a huge plus to see coaches with kids. Parents of recruits see the way the coaches are with their own kids and they see how the coach will treat their son.
Nothing wrong with bringing young ones to practice. If they were hiring their wives and girlfriends to help then that’s an issue. Kids not even close.
Hire who you want, as long as they are qualified for the job they are getting and are going to work their asses off for it. I don’t think having a few volunteer assistants who are family members is big issue.
However,
Lindsay is not a good beat writer, her “strengths” are better suited for writing in magazines. You see these types of stories in SI and ESPN. But as a beat writer I think the focus should be about analyzing and reporting what specifically is happening on the field. Silverstream does a better job than anyone I have read recently. I think I know why, he as do all of us here, have a passion Oregon State athletics. For most of these writers it’s a job, they could be covering South Central Louisiana State and they would churn they same stuff. I wish our beat writers had the same passion as the fans they are writing for.
It’s not a “big issue” on its own, but it is disturbing in the sense that the odds of those family members being the best qualified “volunteers” are close to zero. And in the sense that it reaffirms Riley’s pattern of behavior (i.e. nepotism).
Are there limits on the number of volunteers allowed? I thought these family members being called volunteers was just a matter of recognizing their unpaid presence. If there are experienced teachers available that would volunteer then they’d almost certainly contribute more and, at some point, should displace the vols mentioned; there are practical limits to how many vols can participate without being a disruption.
I’m sure that wiley ol fox Riley has scoured the valley for volunteers with great credentials, just didn’t have the kind of neat luck he was hoping for!
The role that Brennen’s brother plays I think is a good one and is a solid volunteer get. “Receiver is so spread out, and I’m always looking at where I think the ball should go, but I want to make sure the other part of the field gets coached, too. He’s helping me that way.” Not bad for a volunteer will professional experience. I’m sure most of these volunteers are used to set up drills.

Fwiw, it all started with Duck fans on the mainboard. A quick read of the thread didn’t show any long con troll. But that could be what it is in the end. The NCAA has a process, and I’ve not known them to break that process. Then again, I’ve never been this close to cheaters before. So maybe these rumors of higher-up boosters being informed of likely penalties for allegations of violations that have not been given to the school could be true?
The process I know comes with a notice of allegations sent to the school. The school can tell or not tell anyone about it. But it makes no difference, because the NCAA will make a public statement of the allegations then mete their punishment within the 24 hours following a NOA. The NCAA isn’t in the business of leaking anything to anyone… no matter how special the cheaters think they are. There’s just too much liability for this to occur.

Riley pushes the family angle because he thinks it is smart for longer job security and an easy ploy in Corvallis.
As far as running backs the only way OSU gets 1800 yards rushing is if it is Woods and Brown getting most the carries. Riley can think of redshirting Brown but I don’t like it and if he does he is playing with fire. Riley needs to make a bowl this year or he could be in some jeopardy. He rolled the dice last year and that was put off as a ‘growth’ year. This year is a ‘must win’ year and he better have all the talent available.
I also want Malik Gilmore to play this year. He is going to be good and can help win now.

Agnew may have dislocated a finger during the last 5 minutes of practice finishing off blocking drills. Hope this is minor. It was on his right hand which he carries with.
Malcolm Agnew on Tuesday looked to have dislocated a finger on his right hand (it looked pretty gruesome) while running blocking drills within five minutes of the end of practice.
The severity of the injury is unknown, but the fact that Agnew carries the ball almost solely with his right hand will certainly play a role in whether or not he puts on pads tomorrow. (Scout)

I don’t understand this post. I hope the NCAA comes down on the Ducks if they cheated, which all indications are that they did. There is no tie to how the Beavers are doing in any way.
Investigating the lifetime contract would be a waste of time. Unfortunately, you can’t legislate away stupidity.
That’s the way he’s always thought and posted. Everything is apparently a slight against the Ducks and based on our jealousy of them, even if it has nothing to do with either us or them. His bias was apparent from the beginning, and it holds true even now.

It is another misstep by Riley to foolishly allow one of his assistant coaches to have that coach’s kids volunteer on the field during practices. There are likely to be dozens if not hundreds of fans who also would like to volunteer during practices and should be given that right every bit as much as the coaches kids. I am requesting right now that i be allowed to volunteer at beaver football practices and i intend to approach coach Riley and make this request to him personally.If i am not allowed to volunteer then i expect he will immediately eject his assistants coach’s kids from there volunteer status. His failure to do so will infuse a match closer look at what appears to be an underlying favoritism and bias on Riley’s program for his “good old boy” gang.
