Feedback for Bob Decarolis

From chilln72, in the comment section of the last thread:

Dear Beaver Nation,

I have done some legwork and there now is a direct line to the AD and Athletic Dept to voice your concerns and the direction you would like to head. This will be coming in the following weeks on pure orange and message boards. Displeased OSU went from 5 uniform combinations to only 3? Now there is a way for us fans to let them know. Basically this is a collaboration spurred by a line between my ex boss at Nike and those inside the department he has regular contact with. Through my efforts and the discussions that follow your voice can now be considered as part of general feedback. Many have been displeased by trends continuing at OSU when supporters seem to want certain changes but it has been difficult for the AD and dept to always know what fans really want.

So now please start by replying to this notification with the ideas that OSU fans would like to see to better support their university’s teams. So whether you want the possibility of black pants with orange unis, white lids with black jerseys or tartan endzones state it here. If you have ideas for gameday experience or increasing basketball attendance also add those here.

Together, consider this a first step to allowing the little guy a voice. Yes the AD and dept will make the ultimate decisions but know there is a channel for ideas to be added and hopefully a better mix of ideas and implementations to result.

  1. I find that moronic. This blog is already expressing criticisms of the athletic dept. All they have to do, if they want ideas, IS READ IT. Its as close as their internet connection.

And if they wont make the tiny effort to read this blog, then they dont REALLY want input, and are just giving lip service to it.

    • They do read it. Bob D has written me many times. That hasn’t happened in over a year, though. I think when I realized I needed surgery and tailed off my output, he stopped reading/caring.

        • From what I understand, he’s offering to relay the sentiments we so often spread among so many posts in a concise and measured manner and in a forum where s/he thinks it will be not only heard, but also listened to and understood… and maybe implemented.

Try going through some of the old posts. You’re going to find people raising valid issues in ways not considered measured alongside reasoned comments. Then you have to ignore Ducky and his lame attempts at humor and Pollyanna and her weird contortions of both frustrated and reasoned comments. This very idea should be an abomination to Pollyanna. Faith has no place for discussion.

      • Mad points to Bob D for writing you “many times” after you bitched to him because you only wanted to donate $20, not the $40 minimum on the donor form and then after you created an online petition asking for his resignation that emailed him every time someone signed the petition (probably didn’t clog his inbox, thank God). Give credit where credit is due: if Bob D is taking the time to respond to the fringe, that is one responsive AD.

Oh, and he is not reading your blog. Jesus. Stop suggesting you two are pen pals.

        • Nice try Bob. And welcome back.

Go ahead and peruse some of the suggestions. The thread didn’t go how originally intended, so maybe there’ll be another one for you on the same topic at a later date.

Oh, and if you’re easily offended you might want to skip over most of Whiskey posts.

    • Sure, they should wade through 500+ posts of ‘FIRE TEH RILEYZ!’ and shit like that to find maybe a few nuggets of decent criticism.

  2. This is another example of the ticketing issue I brought up in the last thread:
    http://angrybeavs.com/basketball/7930#comments

This is egregious. There should be no event I attend at OSU which is advertised at a certain price where I have to carry 175% of the ad price in order to get in. I brought up the “fill Gill” for WVB next week being advertised as $1, but having to check out at $8 or maybe $11 for a single ticket instead. That price should be marketed as the only money I need to go to the event and plunk down in order to get in the door. This should be a uniform policy at OSU. I would rather see higher price points up front than to get back-doored by these shenanigans.

Now, I understand this is the way ticketing services have done things for years. People hate them for it, and they just laugh all the way to the bank. But they are not inflexible to their customers’ needs. I remembered running across this earlier this year, and it reminded me of the original post I linked above:
    http://ev9.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/SEGetPackageInfo?packageCode=GS%3AMICH%3A%3AVTREATS%3A&linkID=michst&shopperContext=&caller=&appCode#__utma=52920951.1373573235.1383861141.1383861141.1383861141.1&__utmb=52920951.3.10.1383861141&__utmc=52920951&__utmx=-&__utmz=52920951.1383861141.1.1.utmcsr=google|utmccn=%28organic%29|utmcmd=organic|utmctr=%28not%20provided%29&__utmv=-&__utmk=91618590

The common thread is the consulting service for MSU and OSU. That service is Paciolan. But if you go through the motions of getting tickets for MSU WVB for any of these promotional games, you will pay just $20 for four people instead of the $34 you had to pay for OSU WBB… which was advertised as the same $20. Obviously, Paciolan rehashes marketing and consulting ideas. I guess if they work that’s fine. But why does MichSt not gouge their fans for an additional 70+% over their promotional ad? Is that a conscious decision by the AD’s at both schools? Does the OSU AD think its fans are more stupid than those in East Lansing? Or are they intentionally trying to suck people in with what sounds like a decent family/friends outing which also supports your school… in order to completely piss them off and make them consider never connecting to another promotional link sent out by OSU?

And yes Bobby D… I’m saying your athletic department doesn’t care about its fans like Michigan State’s does. Yup. Michigan State is better than you. What are you going to do about it?

  3. I just wish the ticket prices for basketball would adjust to the demand and the product. I’d love to take my family to a game, but there is no way I’m forking over $100 to sit in an empty arena and root for a sub-par team playing against the Quinnipiac Bobcats. Especially during the pre-season games, they should be offering steep family discounts, local elementary-high school promotions, etc. in an effort to fill the stands and garner a little local interest. My guess is that the increased attendance and concessions sales would off-set the decreased individual ticket sale price. Even if fiscally equal, a 3/4 full arena is better than an empty arena by any measure.

  4. GWH, if you go online to OSUbeavers.com on black friday and use the promotion code back friday you can get $5 tickets to any games except for the civil war I believe. They’ve done this the last few years

  5. Since baseball is going to be our main sport this year and Casey is leading the fundraising for the new lockerroom & pavilion opening in late spring, when are fans going to be able to purchase those new OSU caps? Seems BDC is leaving money and positive promotion on the table by not having Nike already offering these to the public. Think they would vastly outsell Beavnado hats and baseball has to be our golden sport this year.

    • Funny how it goes week to week. Mannion looked better against Stanford than Mariotta does. UO shut out do far.

love this disciplined Stanford D. You watching Banker?

    • agreed. OSU’s run D is very poor. But what Stanford has done so far is a thing of beauty. Oregon can’t beat you when their offense is on the sidelines. That drive before halftime was perfect. 20 something plays, 96 yards and ate up over 8 minutes.

      • That’s exactly what was so frustrating about our furd loss. Our sustained drives were awesome, right up until we failed to score. As such we let those 3min in the middle of the game killed us.

  6. 4th quarter. Hellfuck was practically pissing down his leg at half. Now his whole team looking dejected realizing they have no effective adjustments to Stanfurd Power football. I love that Stanford put on a clinic in the offseason on how to stop the spread/read option.

  7. HA HA HA. Josh Huff crying on the sidelines like a little bitch. It’s funny. They do this to almost every team they play. Not so much fun when someone does it to you huh?

    • He’s just trying to figure out where those other 33 points he promised are going to come from in the last 5 minutes.

Well, there’s 7 of them. What a low kick.

  8. So OSU with a fully healthy QB is about as good as Oregon with a gimpy QB. Gotta wonder how healthy Mariota will be by the Civil War.

  9. “So OSU with a fully healthy QB is about as good as Oregon with a gimpy QB. Gotta wonder how healthy Mariota will be by the Civil War.”

    Do you honestly believe that?

    • If Mariota cant run, yes. He was obviously hampered by that knee injury tonight. Duck defense also showed they don’t get pressure in the backfield consistently, so Mannion would have more time to throw. Still think Beavs lose, but it wouldnt be a dumpster fire

      • I think it would be a ginormous dumpster fire. Consider that we make minimal effort to run the ball even when it’s working. The biggest reason Stanford was able to get out to a lead was the fact they kept Oregon’s offense on the sidelines.

      • Mariota didn’t do anything better or worse than he has done all year. I didn’t see much difference in this game except that he had to throw further than five yards down field a little more often. In fact, he was probably better than his stats since he finally had to try to throw into coverages and and had more down field plays. And his stats put this game at about his 4th or 5th best game this year.

It’s not his fault his RBs didn’t run for five TDs like they normally do. But if Mariota has been excellent and magical and every superlative thus far this season, then last night was no different. The plays he did or didn’t make are the same plays he always does or doesn’t make.

    • I do, I think the Ducks laid an egg vs their 1st real opponent of the year and got exposed that they can not compete with a physical team. We played Stanford a lot closer than they did (yes I know the Ducks got a lucky block for 6 and an onside kick) but that was purely desperation. If Cummings didn’t have a bum wrist and drops one in the endzone maybe OSU goes into OT at home and gets the win.

  10. well let’s see. A diminution of Duck trolls in here for two weeks at least. No Ducks in the “natty” .
We keep the NW monopoly on the Heisman. Not a bad night.

    • Put the student section at Gill behind the benches. At least it will appear like we have some fans attending games on tv. As it is, the view from the cameras always shows the empty seats.

  11. OT, but what I enjoyed about the Stanford/UO game:

Two teams, with distinct, self-defined identities, playing what was ultimately a COMPETITIVE game, and staying true to their identities: Stanford; smart, disciplined defense with sound fundamental tackling and a strong run-blocking ball control offense, Oregon; quick strike “we-don’t-need-time-to-score” approach that encourages even the defense and special teams to score. Remember, Kelly used to tell defense and special teams they should score at least 10 TDs per season. And while it looked like UO had given up, they had huge special teams plays to block the FG attempt, return it for a TD, and execute the onside kick, and energize the team again. Each team stayed true to the identity defined by their current and former coaches (i.e. program). They know who they are and that makes the game easier to play for them. Contrast this to Riley’s annual “this team needs to find it’s identity” weakness, which is no way to lead young people; you have to provide goals and examples for them to follow.

What I hate about OSU football is not just the choking on the big stage, but that 10+ years into Riley II, with his own coaches, schemes, and recruits, they don’t have an identity and they don’t play the game well; they don’t run block, they don’t tackle, and it’s been years since all three units have played well for four quarters in one game.

I also enjoyed seeing Duck players crying on the sidelines.

I also enjoyed the white trash bandwagon non-UO grad duck fans in the room saying wise things like “Stanford doesn’t even know what football is.” This after a second straight game of clearly beating the ducks. This after Stanford’s top 5 finishes and respectable bowl games.

Tonight, Stanford once again provided a blue print for how to play the ducks competitively. Riley and Banker will learn nothing from it; and it won’t translate to the CW. OSU’s D will not play with discipline, will not tackle well in the open field, and it’s OLine will not run block well. Most likely, Riley’s self-limited solution will be obvious; throw the ball. And UO will take the deep ball away as Stanford and USC have done, sit on routes, and Riley will be calling play action that no one respects. I suspect it could end up looking like the Gunderson-led CW where the outcome was obvious and there was no true hope of winning.

I don’t like Oregon. I respect Stanford. But at least I got to see some conviction in tonight’s game.

      • I hope you’re right.
Still wonder if there is a good reason for the lack of carries for Tyler Anderson, he was used in the pass game last week so I don’t think it is lingering problems from his earlier injury.

    • Part of that blueprint is the athletes Stanford has on D. We don’t have them. Shane Skov, for example, can make open-field tackles at the line of scrimmage sideline to sideline. That guy is a freak. We don’t have a Shane Skov.

  12. I didn’t realize what a fumble machine Mariota is when teams can get pressure on him. On the college level teams good enough to do that consistently are far and few between, but that changes in the NFL. I would think GM’s have taken note. I doubt that the Beavs defense is going to be able to do that enough to make a difference in the Civil War.

  13. Quote from Henry Anderson of Furd about need to get into the backfield rather than playing laterally against Oregon. The Beaver linebackers play so deep that they can only defend laterally. No other choice. Bad concept to concede the edges.

    • I don’t think it’s as much about Bama being scared or glad someone kept the ducks out of the National Championship, as much as it’s the old school/smash mouth powers rooting against the new uptempo/option teams. I work with an old Buckeye who for no apparent reason hates the ducks more then I do. Every time the ducks lose he can’t wait to run in to say “You know we figured them out first back when we played them in the Rose Bowl, yada yada yada.”

Beating the ducks isn’t rocket science. We’ve talked about this before. Defense needs to seal the edges to force them to run up the gut, stay disciplined with regard to assignments/gap responsibility, and get pressure on the quarterback. Then on offense you need long/sustained clock eating drives that end in points. Problem is you need to have NFL caliber talent in the trenches on both sides of the ball, and there isn’t enough of it to go around in college. It’s a perfect scheme built around exploiting the main weaknesses of most college football teams. That why their offense/offensive players are great in college, but suck in the pros where there are no weaknesses.

Long winded way of saying I think collectively the old school SEC, Big 10, Big 12 teams/fans who have access to the hoss’s root against the new fangled flashy/speed option teams. Bama’s not scared of Oregon. They enjoy watching the cocky flying Phil Knights get bitch slapped by bigger, stronger, smash mouth teams.

    • Also, I think this was Stanford’s golden year and Shaw pissed it away with his play calling during the Utah game. I think they’ll drop off next year as something crazy like their 10 best defensive players are seniors.

2014 They’re offense may improve as they’ll still have the power rushing game with that herk’n OL and have been recruiting better skill players, but the defense (Skov, Gardner, Murphy, Reynolds) are the heart and soul of that team. It feels like all of those guys have been there for 8 years, and there’s no way they don’t take a major step backwards.

      • Stanford wins its games in the trenches. This year, six of Stanford’s starting front seven are seniors (and the other is a junior). Indeed, ten of the top fourteen players in Stanford’s D-line and LB corps are seniors. On the other side of the ball, Stanford’s O-line features two senior guards (including All-American David Yankey), a senior center, and a senior right tackle. And don’t forget that Tyler Gaffney — key to Stanford’s run game this year — is a senior, too.

Shaw’s stock is peaking right now. Wouldn’t be surprised if Shaw leaves Stanford for the NFL after this season.

  14. Does anybody think Stanford’s defensive coordinator is going to start getting calls about HC jobs? Would he be a valid, well-rounded candidate? It seems there are a number of positive things he could port from the Stanford program – as started by Harbaugh – if he has the capacity.

Not a question OSU needs to answer, Riley has another year added, and his buyout remains too high. And that football sage Lindsay Schnell says OSU couldn’t do better than Riley anyway….

      • This is true. It’s wasted energy most of the time. Besides, even the best dunk isn’t as satisfying as kissing it off the glass while on the move.

I think the lay-up has suffered the same fate the mid-range jumper has. But the art of the lay-up is lost not only because of the dunk. Too often I see players roll it up on the rim instead of hitting that square on the backboard. There’s a reason that square is there. The mid-range jumper utilizes that square also when done consistently well.

But the problem with both lay-ups and mid-range shots is that they aren’t practiced as much as treys and dunks. Treys and dunks are for specialists. Real hoopsters can take care of the real business of everything else.

  15. After watching the game and seeing some of the reactions, I think this could be where it’s now Helfrich’s program and the beginning of a decline.

Next year should be a year of transition, Scott Frost is probably going to get a HC job. Probably considered for the Nebraska job. Mariota is likely to go pro. I don’t think this last game affected his draft status since it was clear he was not 100% and his stock couldn’t get any higher. I figured Helfrich could ride the coattails of Chip for a year or two. He’ll have make his own imprint on the program sooner than he thought.

    • On another note that’s related: I think Utah is built to be a problem for the Ducks. Big in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Mobile/drive extending quarterback. Could be your classic let down game. A make it/break it response game for Helfrich.

On espn I called the Utah upset over Stanford because they match up well. I’m getting the same feeling with how they match up with Oregon, and Utah has also been in a lot of “Deep Water” this year and it could finally pay-off for them.

    • It will be interesting to see if The Quacks get back to their blowout ways in their last three games or if the motivation falls off a little. I’m thinking their fan base has had enough of BCS games and probably the players if they are honest. With all of the tears and odd post game comments, I’m sure it was NC or bust this year.

Beavs will be in some shit bowl game whether they beat the Ducks or not, I would just like the Civil War to be relevant in the 4th Quarter this year Beavs need any edge they can get.

      • It’s the fans motivations that are likely to fall off. If there is a 730 start to the Utah game, it’ll be interesting to see how many fans will go or leave early. Especially after the letters to Canzano.

      • We win out and we will have a shot at the Alamo again ah….. Most Duck fans I know said this was the year as they could lose a lot of skill players to the draft. I think Mariota is a goner especially with a knee injury, no need to pull a Dennis Dixon… too soon?

  16. BDC isn’t going to be able to stay AD much longer due to his terrible and sad illness, what about promoting Riley to AD when the time comes? Riley loves Vallis and his Beavs and seems to be making a push to get the Beavs in the Media (In-Out, tweeting highlight tapes on Tuesdays, slip and slides…etc.) It’s obvious Riley cares about his Beavs, I just think he lacks the energy to “coach up” anymore. If I were a staff member or player I wouldn’t be concerned about improving cause Riley is NEVER going to demote or come down hard on a player or coach. Only demotions this year were put forth by Bray getting Skotte out of there….

    • Pat Casey is the man to get for AD. He will only coach baseball for a few more years max most likely and the timing is perfect for 2016 in this respect. You want a guy who would do what it takes and not just give lip service or ever be content and be able to make the tough decisions then you want Casey.

I think OSU would have a pretty good renaissance under Casey’s leadership. With Riley it will feel like the last 18+ years, minus the few years Erickson was around, but super stale. Riley won’t even consider replacing Langsdorf or Banker. He would be terrible in this role IMO and OSU would stagnate even worse than now.

We either need a proven fearless winner like Casey or new blood who wants OSU to get way more serious about athletics and can generate excitement and a new generation of supporters.

      • Right on, FedUp. Casey has a lot going for him as AD: good record as a fund raiser, a serious passion for winning, a record of valuing performance over seniority.

Does anyone know how he gets along personally with Riley?

        • I think Casey and Riley get along pretty well and I know that Brett Casey is married to one of Mark Banker’s daughters, but that wouldn’t stop him from making necessary changes if he thinks they are needed. Look how he improved his recruiting after the issues he had after the title teams if you read the book that came out this year on the program.

      • Good points, Casey won’t tolerate the same bullshit BDC and Riley do. He’s won National Titles, do you think he is actually being considered?

  17. That is intriguing, but I think they need an AD with experience, plus I think BDC is going to leave behind a bunch of budget headaches that he wouldn’t want to handle. Besides Riley actually has Ryan Gunderson handle a lot of the media or the girl at the front office (can’t remember her name). Mike also has to hire and fire coaches and he doesn’t have a track record of that outside of football with his own staff, which I question a lot. He would be a step up personality-wise from BDC, but he wouldn’t be the right guy.

    • I seem to recall a certain guy who bears a striking resemblance to mysefl that said this was the guy U$C would make a hard run after right after Lame got shitcanned.

first guess is they make a hard run at Kevin Sumlin. He can do much better (and eventually will) than Texas A & M

  18. How about a NCAA Regional in Portland hosted by Oregon State for once? Or a baseball game in Hillsboro Stadium to get more Portland presence. Can’t stand how BDC has lost Portland as an integral part of Oregon State and has ceded so much to Oregon. He doesn’t even try. 2nd baseball national title and he decided to not even have a Portland celebration. Pure idiocy. The man needs to be ousted from his AD role ASAP.

    • Is Oregon State university located in Portland? And there have been several baseball and basketball games in Portland over the last several years

    • Portland hasnt had a baseball stadium big enough to host that type of event since they converted pge park for mls soccer. And before the conversion, i saw osu baseball play a civil war non con series as well as osu vs Georgia at PGE park. Hillsboro stadium just opened mid summer, after OSU’ s season was over. Maybe they’ll play there in the future, but in the past it wasnt a possibility.

      • OSU swept that Civil War series at PGE Park so it was nice to show as the dominant program to Portlanders. Keizer is a dump compared to Hillsboro and Hillsboro/West Pottland metro area is growing pretty fast so think Hillsboro Stadium would be a smart place for OSU to play a game every year to broaden support.
