  1. Worried that the basketball team may be “hitting the wall” this season. Tinkle has wrung more than anyone expected out of this bunch, and I think we are seeing their limits.

It’s too bad because I have enjoyed the highs of this season and next year looks goodbut I was starting to have a lot of fun with all of the winning.

But with the way these last two games have gone, I’m not expecting another win this season.

And also is anybody else concerned with the talent deficit Andersen will be faced with next year? Like with the basketball team I’m not expecting drastic changes for the better over night, but I guess I wasn’t expecting to be sitting 20 spots below Colorado either.

It’s all relative, and stars don’t mean everything, but even if he is twice as good a coach as we all hope he is he will be fighting an uphill battle for at least a couple of years in the PAC 12 with this type of roster. I hope that he can generate enough positive momentum early that it won’t be an issue but if we start being perceived as the next Colorado or Washington State it will be tough for anyone to convince the top flight prospects to sign on the dotted line.

    My pessimism runs deep!

  2. You’re not expecting another win because of two road losses? I’ve said this so many times already, but this team isn’t going to win on the road.

  3. USC played really good pressure D in the first half combined with cold shooting from the Beavs. Rueck with good adjustments at the half and the Beavs are in blowout mode now. Hunter follows an outstanding defensive effort vs ASU with solid play at both ends in this one.

    • Didn’t watch/listen to game yesterday afternoon but looked at some of the post-game comments, etc. this morning. Learned that during the first little bit, Rueck was complaining about a referee call and Sydney Weiss went over and said – or words to this effect – “don’t worry coach, we’ve got it.”

      • Maybe he’s just not very religious and won’t take a mission. Sometimes that happens. But I think I read somewhere he was LDS. Getting this guy and Noah would make the class pretty good given the short notice (and assuming they enroll rather than mission).

    • On his Twitter account it says “Future Missionary”. I don’t understand why Andersen and Co. would be going after so many likely “Mission guys”. He must have a lot of confidence in those returning?

      • Yeah I just read this:

Folau, who will serve an LDS mission, said “at the end of the day I have to do what’s best for me. That’s what I felt Oregon State was.”

So the Beavs just got a 4-star 2017 LB. Cool I guess…we’ll see in what type of shape he returns.

  4. Just throwing an idea in regards to site.

With the tendency comments on each blog post ending up a mixed bag of different topics, maybe making the forum the more prominent section be better.
People don’t have to wait for AB to put up a new blog post, or request a new post as the previous one turning to be overly long already, as other posters can create topics of their own and immediately comment on it.
The different topics allows thread comments to be more confined to the subject of that thread.
Easier to follow too, since the most recently commented topic goes on top of the list.

  5. Perhaps making a few moderators with the ability to create new posts would help. I wouldn’t mind having a post for each WBB game, but it’s probably not realistic as it seems I’m the only one here who follows WBB regularly.

    • I’ve been regularly following the team since the North Carolina game. I wouldn’t mind having threads dedicated to the Lady Beavs. Maybe not one for every single game, but a thread per weekend series perhaps?

    • I follow the women’s basketball teams, and regularly attend the home games. They are very very good and a fun team to watch. Watching them and comparing them with other teams I see on TV, I don’t see why they can’t win the whole thing this year.

      • That is an angle Mama wrote about in her LDS post. She said it occurred to her and she’s going to start researching wiscy and Utah commits on Missions currently to see if there’s anyone worth going after.

  6. How long are missions typically?

Wikipedia says they can last anywhere from 6 to 36 months. lds.org says the recommendation is now 18 months instead of 24 months. Two years is what I had always heard.

  7. So lets “Poach” the guys that are coming off missions this year….i’m sure the list is long for the BYU, Utah, Utah St. ….

  8. Class is shaping up better-got to give the coaches accolades for working their butts off and salvaging what could have been a disaster of a recruiting year. Next year will give us a good idea what these coaches can really do on the recruiting front. The one thing I noticed about the commits, regardless of the number of stars, is that they seem to have interest from a lot of teams. That in itself is a good sign. We know these guys can coach. If they can get the players, we will be good.

  9. Basketball: I think getting Robbins back should help, maybe not right away as he works back into the rotation, but he would have really helped yesterday when we are going through scoring droughts. I enjoyed how good OSU’s defense made AZ look, Miller looked like he was ready to blow. I think in the Pac12 tourney we provide a tough out if we face them.

Recruiting: Got a couple nice commits today. At this point I don’t care if some go on missions it gives the program some needed mojo. There are a couple of others that we still could get or lose so Wednesday should be interesting, too bad I will be on the road. The class should be decent, I think with the addition of Alston I would be excited.

Lady Beavs: Could this be a Final Four team?? Long ways to go but they are Orange Express and Rolling.

  10. Cougs take down Stanford on the Palouse. Winning on the road in the Pac-12isn’t easy. Unless you have Arizona on your jersey

    • I mean, if I could get a free Harvard education I’d take that over a free OSU education. From his offer list, Georgia Tech would be a better choice than OSU for engineering as well. Smart kid looking out for his long term success.

    • Hoping for a Seahawks victory; though not emotionally invested in the game at all. I’m tired of Bilicheck and Brady, and Blount showing up again. Blount is a punk/mercenary who doesn’t necessarily earn his opportunities, he’s just far more fortunate than he deserves, both in timing and physical ability. But what the hell, 5 years after his career is over he’ll probably be broke and wind up in jail for assault or something. We’ll see if the Legion can handle his kinetic energy…

Seattle’s D, Wilson, Lynch, offer compelling match ups. I’d feel stronger about Seattle’s chances if the WRs were more dynamic – they should have moved up for Cooks : ) – and the passing game more consistently dangerous. Maybe it comes down to special teams?

      • I hate Blount too but can’t stand Sherman. Also Marshawn Lynch’s Rasheed Wallace “Both teams played hard my man” schtick is getting old. Reporters are just doing their jobs a-hole, they’re not preventing you from doing yours. Can’t stand any of those three. I have zero rooting interest in this game

  11. wow. crazy ending to the super bowl. Why in the hell did Seattle throw the ball? You need one yard. Why not give it to Lynch? They would have had 3 cracks to get it in the end zone.

  12. Wow, when you see a play call that stupid you wonder about a whole “behind the scenes” world we common folks don’t have a clue about. Completely unexplainable. At least I could care less about both teams, in fact I’ll be happy when Carroll and Belichick’s time has passed. They are both a-holes on different ends of the spectrum..

    • People are always shocked here in Portland when I say I could give two shits about the Seahawks. You see Seahawks stuff everywhere and it’s just been the last couple of years, bandwagon stupidity.

    • Not really? I think most people (including me) root for them because they happen to be the closest team geographically.

Got an NFL team you root for?

      • I hate having geography forced down my throat with sports teams. It doesn’t interest me. I don’t live in Seattle, but it’s just rooting for a team, so not a big deal. And by the way, I’m a Dolphins fan from way back. It’s interesting though, when I lived in SLC they showed Broncos games every week and most people could have cared less about the Broncos, they were 49ers fans because of Steve Young.

      • Shh, this is another way some Beaver fans can try to feel superior to Duck fans… :P

I feel the split is probably pretty equal. Lots of Mariner or Seahawk fans since there’es no Oregon MLB or NFL team.

  13. As Carroll asked Harbaugh….”what’s your deal?” after that Stanford blowout of SC……broken hearted Seahawk’s fans should be asking Carroll the same question now!

  14. Thank god we don’t have riley recruiting for us still. I don’t care what the stars say we have a better class hands down. Andersen is the man, go beavs!

    • OT – but, ha, Carroll indeed sounding like Riley:

“Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said the Seahawks didn’t have the ideal personnel on the field to run the ball. ”

Ummmm, put the right personnel on the field? Have your QB run it? Run it anyway and maybe lose a yard or two at worst?

Seahawks like Irvin and Okung expressed amazement that Seattle didn’t run the ball. Okung remarked they’d done it before out of similar packages….

Brewer, calling it the worst play call in SB history:

      http://seattletimes.com/html/seahawks/2025601887_brewer02xml.html

  15. Didn’t have a rooting interest other may my Seattle and the parlay.. But that outcome really sucks for the Hawks players. Russel Wilson is getting a pass for making a bad throw, because at the end of the day there was just no way and hell they should have been passing the ball there.

Conspiracy theorist are saying PC wanted Wilson to win the MVP which is why he tried to have him throw the rock. I don’t buy that

  16. I heard someone on the radio this morning say this in defense of the call:
“If was such a bad call, then why did Belichick prepare for it?”

I think this moron was trying to say that because Seattle had run this poor call before, enough to warrant the opposition to prepare for it, then going to the well once too often is a decent call?

    Ummm… okay?

The series of events that led up to it were just as Riley-esque, btw. waste a TO on 1st. Bring in anything but your heavy package. Then blame not having your heavy package or that wasted TO for needing to pass the ball?

    • Good god, even if you want to throw it, roll out, throw to the outside/fade, or throw out of the back of the end zone. Russell as a threat to run it in off a roll out probably pulls somebody toward him and helps out the receivers, or maybe he does run it into the end zone.

Too funny. Pete’s going to feel like an ass all offseason and I doubt he gets back to the SB anytime soon.

      • I know. They have a goal lone D in, which means everyone is compressed and moving downhill, and you throw a quick, short middle slant… that we now know they were expecting?

        • Teams run that kind of pick play on the goal line all the time though. This wasn’t an unusual play call.

This time the Pats knew what was coming. Browner jammed the pick guy at the line and then Butler jumped the route all the way. Magnificent play by the defense.

They could have run beast mode twice since they only had one time out. He was 1/5 this season scoring a TD from the 1 yard line so it’s not necessarily a sure thing. They also didn’t want to leave even 20 seconds for Brady to potentially get into field goal range.

Passing game them a chance to score, a chance to run some clock, would stop the clock if it failed, and persevered the ability to try two more plays if necessary.

Unfortunately for them, it also opened up the chance for an INT. But I also think Wilson could have placed the ball better in a spot that had less chance to be intercepted.

          • It was a poor call even if it works, which it had in the past. But going to the well once too often gets the precise outcome we saw. The defender made the great play because that well had run dry. A roll-out would have created chaos in the end zone and would have left the opportunity to just huck it OOB if nothing came clear. There would have been much more opportunity with much less downside. And it would have been less expected.

But we’ve seen this play before… on a 2pat… at the end of the UW game a couple years ago.

          • Yeah, Carroll gave decent reasoning for calling a pass… but not that one.

After watching Lynch refuse to answer media questions, then cash in on it with commercials the next day, Sherman constantly mouthing off, and Baldwin pretending to poop a football in the end zone, I’m kind of glad they didn’t win.

          • Wilson deserves more blame.. You have to put the ball on the guy in that situation not lead him. Make the only chance for a pick the DB running through the WR’s body

        • That’s right…Butler said he knew what play they were going to run and that helped him get to the right spot. I know it was a stupid call, but it was also a poor throw by Wilson and he’s taking no heat for that. Lockette also ran a wimpy route and it looked like even if he somehow had caught the ball he may have been stopped short. What a cluster!

  17. Thor Kotoa de-committed from Utah today. Had an official visit with the Utes this past weekend. that’s gotta sting a little for Utah.

Doug Kimmel ?@DougKimmelScout 11m11 minutes ago
2014 Utah commit Thor Katoa has decommitted from Utah following his official visit in Salt Lake City this weekend.

      • He de-committed when Riley left OSU. I assume Riley didn’t offer @ Nebraska and that Andersen wasn’t interested either. I think he’s a good one. It will be interesting to see what he does in Stitt’s scheme if he goes to Montana.

  18. Was raised an Eagles fan, so as long as the Cowboys don’t win, I couldn’t care less. I did see about 20 Ducks/Seahawks clothes combos at the store yesterday, so losing two straight championship games is just what that fanbase deserves.

  19. Predicting 7 wins next year for Oregon State with 6 possible if they lose a close winnable game. That probably lands us in the San Fran vicinity playing at Levi’s Stadium in our bowl. Andersen and Co. need to hit this 7 win mark or exceed it for a successful season IMO. Let’s see if we get one last nice recruit to add to the class on signing day. I think we might.

  20. A bit early for predictions. There is not enough realistic or factual information on which to base a reasonable projection. There is also the issue of opposition. What do the other guys bring to the table?

  21. WBB: PAC12 commentator says, “here in the great Gill Col., great atmosphere”. Beavs up 1 with 13 to go in first half.

    Mandy lookin good in orange!

  22. Lady Beavs looking good again. Weisner could probably be PG for the men’s team. She has serious ball handling skills. Is that allowed for a woman to play on the men’s team?

  23. Hope rumor DirecTV telling customers they expect to pick up Pac-12 Networks in August is true. Conference will be sitting pretty with their 100% ownership once this happens. Oregon State will get enough to make Reser Phase 3 a reality by 2020 and get the mirrored double-deck West Side that is going to rock the Kasbah!

    • On Dish you get the main Pac-12 channel plus 4 alternates – all in HD. I watch multiple games a lot when they are scheduled at the same times. But when the Beavs are at home I’m in Gill.

It’s interesting that the timeouts come at almost the same time in all the games. One night watching 3 games, I’d change channel at a timeout on one and there would be commercials on the others at the same time. Seemed like it was that way the entire game(s).

  24. Lady Beavs looking human today. They’ve hit some shots, but have played some very lethargic D. The cold starts have to end as the season starts to draw nearer the postseason.

  25. OSU/Corvallis getting some love from the game commentator. “Why wouldn’t you want to play here?” “Beautiful campus with lots of building going on”

    • if they can get the sweep next weekend they have a great shot at running the table in conference. Stanford, Cal and ASU games are at Gill.

  26. Women’s basketball team is too real. Honestly, they play only decent and still win by 20. I legitimately believe they can make the Final Four in Tampa. Only loss is a close one in a hostile environment. It would be so nice to throw up a Final Four banner or a Pac-12 conference title banner or both, the other schools have been hogging em all.

They gotta handle this Washington trip well. Plum won’t be cold in Seattle, and Galdeira won’t let up in Pullman, plus it’ll be emotional since they lost the center in the game in Corvallis. Both UDub and Wazzu can be lethal, but Beavs take care of business and they are in amazing shape.

  27. What’s the word on Deltron Sands? Is he a slot receiver or kind of utility back for third down? He seems to have decent high end speed. Looks faster than Quizz, but doesn’t have his power or the same kind of crazy change of direction/footwork ability.

    • Quizz was fast, he just never ran in a straight line. Sands on ESPN is reported at a 4.77 40. I trust those than anywhere else because it was timed at a camp and not self reported. Everyone and their mom reports 4.4 times.

Looks like a scat back, 3rd down situations type guy. Also a few years away to develop physically.

  28. Interesting that Louisville is reaching out to Decoud today, trying to add him last minute. Looking like Sheldrick Redwine has de-committed from Louisville, but don’t think he’s interested in OSU. Decoud seems to be loving the attention that goes with signing day.

  29. On paper, USC is putting together a really impressive class. Even with Sark, it’s fortunate we only play them every 2 out of 4 years.

  30. Reading Kearsley’s tweet, it looks like Noah will be a Beav tonight. That’s what I expected. He would be a huge get. I don’t think he’s a mission guy? Anyone confirm?

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Beavs in the mix for a signing day surprise or two with returning Mission players, either.

Also, does Kearsley have to sit out this year? I didn’t follow that situation closely.

  32. Hearing some concerning things regarding the off field character and potential eligibility/academic issues on these Katoa kids.

One reddit source called them both “ticking time bombs for whoever takes them”….

    Hope not!

  33. @Beavrecruiting had it’s first athlete send in his highlights link via direct message. Local 2016 kid from Central Catholic high. Had to let him know we’re not connected with the program, but good to see there’s interest.

  34. Keep em coming.. Technically as donors (which many of us here are) we can send prospects over to the Athletic Department.. Who knows maybe we become the first step in the process for some kids.

  35. Make or break week for basketball. Wouldn’t have been if they didn’t lose to ASU.

They looked like the team that was expected to finish last. 2 wins away from a winning record though.

  36. If…. “…Oregon State is making late push for Phoenix Az. Mountain Pointe RB Paul Lucas…” does that mean someone they were after has decided to go somewhere else?

If it doesn’t it means they could have 4 RB’s in this class; unless a couple of them are going on mission.

Personally, I’d rather they had 4 DT’s in this class.

EDIT: I see Rivals has Lucas as a WR.

    • I don’t think so… Lucas was always on their radar… If anything i see this as a positive in that maybe he’s thinking about going elsewhere other than ASU… which would give us a chance… I am okay with this class, I think it’s actually an impressive class given the circumstances… and it will probably get even better tommorow

      • Haha… wouldn’t that be something… I know Brennan visited Lucas at home within the last few weeks so maybe tomorrow will be a great day!

  37. Some Riley wisdom in response to those who think recruiting Texas is a big job, “You don’t have to evaluate every kid in the state of Texas. If you go to Texas and get two guys it doesn’t seem so overwhelming.”
Simple, huh? Just go get two guys, no need to look at anyone else in the state.

Says he will be different than Pelini, ” “I’m not trying to qualify that with ‘better.’ I’m going to do stuff differently than [Pelini] does … Everything we do has a ton of thought.” Heh, heh, not necessarily better but with a “ton” of thought.

Article says he will mostly recruit within 500 miles of Lincoln and is gonna hire a specialist to work with walk ons.
    http://mweb.cbssports.com/ncaaf/writer/dennis-dodd/25021550/as-signing-day-approaches-nebraska-coach-riley-understands-expectations

Of Beav fans he says, “They were obviously ticked off at our [2014] season.”

      • it’s kind of tough when you’ve been tortured for several years. Riley water boarded a lot of us beaver fans. It’s the PTSD in us

    • This was the best part of the article:

Different? The new coach fits in yoga each morning whether on the road or not.

“I was in Florida recruiting, I got to do it outside for two days,” he said. “That was kind of neat this time of year.”

I knew about the bike, but not the yoga.

I do wish Riley well and hope he succeeds in Nebraska.

And, I hope Gary Andersen does even better. Optimistic he does.

      • The Ol’ Riley distraction technique: “I’m a football coach you’ll like for non-football reasons.” Worked on the Oregon media….

  38. Worst classes in the Pac:

    Colorado
    Beavs
    Arizona

Everyone else signed a fantastic class. Beavs need better players next recruiting cycle.

I scheduled a signing day thread for 4am Pacific time.

    • it was gonna be tough for this coaching staff to do in 6 weeks. However, I think they did fine and this class will be comparable to any of the classes Riley ever signed. It takes time to build relationships and trust with recruits. It’s a miracle they got some of the commits they were able to do in 6 weeks. Who knows, maybe there’s a last minute surprise or two for us in store tomorrow.

      • I’m happy with the late additions. It’s an okay class given the conditions. But when comparing it to the rest of the conference it’s pretty depressing. Scheme and the good coaching will bump all these players up a notch, so there’s that.

        • agreed. Next year will be the litmus test to how GA and staff can recruit when they have the entire year to build relationships with recruits.

  39. I banking on the current recruits and new coaching staff being able to do more than Riley could ever do. Such a short amount of time for a new staff to build relationships for this class but many solid players will come in. I’m really hoping HC Andersen is everything he puts out there. Don’t forget the BEAVS have many good players coming back. Just need to fill in some holes and build for the Fff up Riley left us. Hope tomorrow is a solid day. GO BEAVS!

  40. Calling it now, Beavs sweep the Washington schools this weekend. Cougs will probably keep it closer than they did in Pullman (beavs win by 10), but the hussies are in a free fall and the Beavs will blow them out on Sunday. 16-7 and 7-4 will look nice on Sunday afternoon. Probably not shocking to some since the Beavs are unbeaten at Gill this year

  41. now that’s settled…let’s discuss the “Lady Beavs”, or the “Beavlettes”, or damnit, the womens basketball team at the University of Oregon State!
