Surprise Tournament: Michigan State vs. Oregon State

46

Saturday 12pm, radio only.

Travis Eckert, JC transfer, gets the start. He had one great season at JC and one terrible, so we’ll see what we have here. Regarding the lineup, it needs to change sooner rather than later. Not going to win much putting today’s lineup out there. This is like last year when Casey kept playing Casper, who was so obviously terrible. Well you can’t bat Morrison 2nd (he’s an ideal 9 hitter with the low average and high OBP).

I’m expecting a loss, because I don’t believe in Eckert, but we’ll see. I’d rather see Luke Heimlich get this start and Eckert go vs New Mexico.

Note: A men’s basketball thread will go up just before 2pm for the USC game.

  1. OT… did our AD suddenly start going with Benny instead of the new golf wedge or the poop smear? I see the latest PSA tweets with the cool logo up. but I want something more official than, “Yeah… the new football coach took a look at the crap marketing you’ve put together for the last however many years, and he is not impressed.”

I also want even Benny to change colors. There is no brown in our OSU life.

  2. It’s weird going to the D1 Baseball website to check daily scores and having to scroll down to the P-12 conference area to find the Beav game instead of just checking the Top 30 teams listed at the top of the page. I don’t think the Beavs have ever been out of the Top 30 since I’ve been going to that site. I hope they prove the prognosticators wrong this year.

    • I think they will. I think by the end of the season they’ll be a top 20 team with the development of the young hitters and having a pretty good starting rotation

  3. Casey has won national titles, so people get mad when I criticize him. The titles make him untouchable. I get it. But he’s as dumb as Riley sometimes. It just happens to work for him more often. But today bunting with 1 out, wrong personnel, bad lineup, etc. A lot of the same Riley problems.

  4. Small ball is nice and all but every inning you should play for a big inning, especially with your better hitters coming up. Never play for 1 run unless it’s a late inning situation. Getting just 1 run instead of 2 or 3 ends up costing you often

    • I agree, better off trying a straight steal or hit and run. The only time it makes sense is if the bunter is (a) blazing fast and (b) a terrific bunter, because then he can beat it out or even force an error. Even then, though…questionable

    • The probability of scoring a run with a man on 2nd and 2 out is 22%. The probability of scoring a run with a man on 1st and 1 out is 28%, for those interested.

  5. Harrison is off to a really nice start this year. Could have gotten more that inning. Beavers gave up an out to end the inning by trying to “steal a run”. Need a lot to go right to get a run in that situation

  6. In basketball it’s interesting that Oregon is seen as a couple wins away from an at-large tourney berth and OSU is seen as not having a chance. Oregon hasn’t beat a team with an RPI in the top 40, let alone top 25. Beavers have a win over the #6th ranked team in the RPI. Neither team has an RPI top 50 win over a team in a true road game. Their resume is pretty similar but one could argue the Beavers have had more impressive wins. Seems like a lot of narratives are at work here.

  7. OSU needs to beat USC or the Beavers will start to get some mention of possibly falling out of the NIT. That would be a nightmare. Enormity of the moment begins in 11 minutes…

    Go Beavs!

      • I liked him alot. It more represents the changing culture. We got McGiven, may make a run at Chuckie Keaton and USU is GA’s old haunt. After Andersen’s time in say 7 or 8 years then yes I would look forward to a hire like Wells to keep it moving forward and peehaps continue a culture with a nice thread moving through it.

  8. Almost all new lineup and pitchers and you guys want perfection fom day two. You will not allow experimentation, not allow kids to grow thru adversity. Criticism yes. Back seat driving two games in is farcical. Hijole. Try some Ritalin. Better yet try some clearasil. The very nature of baseball is slow cook, not fast food and zits.
