I went back and found it. It was from a Canzano article. Hope my paraphrasing wasn’t too misleading. Here’s what was written:
“…The Beavers suited up only 58 players (even as rivalry games in the Pac-12 are exempt from the customary 70-player limit). Defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake dressed only three viable linebackers. The last few weeks, Sitake took any spare receivers and running backs on defense, hoping to discover someone who might be capable of running with an opposing running back. Same goes on offense, where Seth Collins was converted from quarterback into a guy whose position could best be described on Friday as “playmaker.”…”
Collins best position is “playmaker”, it’s just a shame it took them to the final game to realize that. Slow as Riley in that regard. It should have been obvious by ~ week 4 through 6. Any reasonable person would see it then.
That’s when I began to write how he would help the team best inside the redzone since Mithcell/MM can’t throw in those tight spaces, so to have Collins with a run/throw option would be best. Again, it takes them half the season to figure that out.
Reflecting on the season, that’s one of my major disappointments. How long it took them to figure things out. It was just like Riley in that regard. Another disappointment was Sitake. His scheme vs Oregon was a perfect example. It made no sense to give those WRs a 10 yard cushion since all Adams can do is hit short passes. Everyone knows Oregon wants their WRs to make short catches then run. And Sitake lets them do it. I don’t care if he feared deep balls. Adams stinks at those, and if he doesn’t for one day, then tip your hat and move on, but don’t play to HIS strength. Sitake with another F there. If I could understand the logic I’d give him a pass, but right now I am bearish on him. One they get better defenders Sitake will probably look better, but his failure to understand some basics might put a cap on him.
Baldwin has shown he can be creative, but again, major question marks not playing Nall vs Utah. Really? Fearing an opponent so much you bench one of the best players? That’s like not playing your #1 RB in fantasy because he’s going against a tough defense. Who cares? You play him anyway and see what happens. It sets a tone of fear by benching him. Baldwin was inconsistent, to be nice about it.
The final complaint I have is overall effort, but I think much of that was due to half the team not buying in. What is strange is in pre-season interviews they all talked as if they bought in. Coaches said they all practiced hard. So what happened on game day? I don’t think we’ll ever get the answer. But something went rotten. Here’s to hoping they take 25 new players including a handful of impact JCs to get this thing going.
If they play like the 2nd half of the Civil War and with better personnel out there, this thing can change fast. A good question is why it took until the final 2 quarters for them to play that way…
I’m a bit leery of some of GA’s comments, especially referring to Nall. I’m not looking it up, but wasn’t Nall being a war daddy before the Utah game where he didn’t get a single carry because the staff thought the middle of Utah’s OL was too good?
I’m watching some of the Bama/Auburn game. Danielson said that even though Bama’s interior defense is intimidating and a huge strength, Auburn can’t give in and must run the ball up the middle from time to time.
The current Beavers assistants stood around near the team bus after the game. There was a lot of frustration and talk about an alarming lack of team speed, especially on defense.
—
To me, that’s been the single biggest sign of decline over the last 8-9 years. We just don’t recruit fast guys like we used to. Dennis Erickson’s defenses were lightning fast and were easily the best we’ve seen in Corvallis. When Banker accidentally blundered into some team speed, they’d look competent and we could actually shut down opposing offenses. I don’t understand why it wasn’t more of a priority.
They used to fly to the ball in their all black uniforms, even two or three of Pettibone teams were extremely active on defense under Rocky Long. West Coast LB U has been in free fall the last three or four years. It starts with speed.
What a year! Went from very hopefull to wtf? Then, finally, the last 2 quarters of the last game I actually felt like we had a team.
too little too late, but a look at what the future might hold.
I just gave you a thumbs up to balance the idiotic minus someone gave you.. Apparently we have a troll throwing out minuses again! I think minuses are fine if the person has the balls to give their opinion as to why now and then.
McKalk, I was out most of the day definitely not me. I find it hilarious someone keeps thumbing down every post you make, though. The fact you mention it means they’ll keep doing it, most likely.
I’m aware of that. You understand that my comments about this person are sarcastic and schtick, right? It’s the fucking internet after all, but I’m a pretty benign commenter unless you are a Riley or Duck lover, so it’s kind of sad that someone has the energy or desire to look up everyone of my posts and give it a minus!
Maybe you finding it hilarious will also keep them “minusing away”! Though they target others like Whisky often also.
Not sure. Here are his stats from last year. Played for the New Mexico Military Institute, but played against some decent JUCO teams. I’ve confirmed that they are at least talking to him at this point.
Ok, he’s the same guy from Alabama you linked from rivals. Has several hudl and youtube highlight links from highschool and juco if you want to see his film.
I find that my reaction (and based on some of the posts the reaction of others too) is that just because the team made the civil war halfway close things are reasonably good. This probably has something to do with a habit formed by my justifying all the bad teams Riley fielded over the last X years.
Bringing myself back to reality: If the coaching staff doesn’t bring in some serious help @ QB, in the trenches and the D in general, next year could be another really ugly year.
The ability of the coaches to bring in some instant help in the form of JC players is what’s going to determine how well next year goes.
For the Beavs future everything depends on recruiting right now. I think everyone knows it including the staff and it has been and will be priority one with attitude change right up there with it This gut it out game was most important to that aspect.
It looks like in hindsight as Angry noted McMaryion would have been the best QB option (at least after Collin’s injury) if not from the beginning of the season. Mitchell was ill-equipped to be a D-1 QB. Did he get the job because he had the best attitude? I find it hard to understand how the coaches could not fix his mechanical issues?
There’s a template for Seth Collins, it was Kordell Stewart when he was with the Steelers. Hopefully, Collins understands he will not be a D-1 QB and gets to adding 15 pounds and learning WR now. If so, it would not shock me if the Beavs have Garettson throwing for 3,000, Nall rushing for 1,000 and Collins receiving a 1,000 in 2017. At least I can dream!
How they used him yesterday was perfect. That’s how he should be used if he sticks with this team. He can even play QB in the red zone where he becomes an asset instead of liability. GA just needs to sell him on the fact he’ll be involved and scoring TDs. Collins likes the glory, so give him some, but at points of the game or areas of the field when he is an asset. GA is a smart guy, so I am amazed it took him so long to figure out. Maybe he wanted to be absolutely sure he couldn’t be a QB and knew it was a wasted year? That’s the only logical explanation other than stupidity.
Mitchell and Collins aren’t that much better at passing so I think they wanted to give Collins time to see if he could develop with experience and coaching. They wouldn’t have won more games with Mitchell or McMaryion playing QB.
Collins actually played better statistically against Pac-12 competition than Mitchell or McMaryion did.
Collins had a 105.5 passer rating, Mitchell had an 89.3, and McMaryion had a 94.4 in Pac-12 games.
That said I hope they can get a good JUCO QB. I’m not sold on Garettson being a good QB, though he’s likely an upgrade over the current guys.
The thing about Collins at QB is he can’t throw and he also can only read his first option before running. I don’t think either of those can be coached (the 2nd more than the 1st), so it should have been obvious by game 6 or so, if not sooner. They might have won more games with the combo yesterday of MM and Collins as “playmaker”…it worked well. But we’ll never know that as fact either way. We just know yesterday looked more like real offense with that setup.
As I said, going through reads can be coached more than the 1st (throwing), but it’s still nearly impossible for a guy like StHC who has the involuntary reaction of look once and run. That will take years (10,000 hr rule is the gold standard, but at best years )to fix, if it’s possible at all. Throwing mechanics can be tweaked, but I can’t think of a single QB who ever went from awful passer to good passer.
You have a boner for Seth, but it appears GA and everyone sees the obvious and has moved on. His new role is “playmaker” and a threat in the redzone. Which is correct usage. Can’t sit around spending hours of precious practice time correcting one guy’s horrible mechanics and passing ability.
You have a boner for Seth, but it appears GA and everyone sees the obvious and has moved on.
What? I said they all stink and we should hope for a JUCO to come in, and if not Garretson is probably the guy to go with.
I was providing what I think the coaches may have used as a rational for sticking with Collins.
105.5 is a terrible passer rating in college football. That’s no way an argument that he should have remained the starter, or be the QB going forward. It’s just saying he actually produced more statistically against Pac-12 teams than Mitchell or McMaryion which I found interesting.
What are their ratings for the games they started? I think that would be a better measure. At least compare games where each of them got the 1A reps during the week. But you can’t compare wholly due to the varied defenses seen by each.
“GA is a smart guy” Yes, insofar as can be told via interviews, print and videos. Also, by the same means, stubborn. When he says something it’s as though he expects someone to be carving it in stone. I’ve often wondered how college kids, who have been playing football since small fry, adjust to the different coaches they’ve had; especially when a coach further down the line tells them something opposite.
Hah!
I would want to be a scout if someone presented the opportunity. This stuff comes so easily. Hard to predict games (I had them at 4+ so blew that), but pretty easy to see if a player has it or not.
Yes, but when you made that prediction none of us knew that there were players not buying in, not giving effort and generally not being here for the right reason(s).
The most successful/flashy pass plays were thrown by him. They weren’t the best throws. That’s why this role is perfect for him. He can run/pass/catch and hog all the glory on 12 touches a game. He can’t move the ball from 20 to 20. But he can do other things to help it along and finish off red zone visits.
“Peko has done well academically, putting together an accumulative grade-point average near a 3.0 during his time at Oregon State. He is on schedule to graduate spring term…”
That tidbit from Eggers points out a little discussed difference between MR and GA. One of Riley’s failures, IMHO, was his lack of energy and focus in ALL facets of his job; I have been told that GA made sure his staff paid attention to getting Peko eligible and believe that Riley simply didn’t care enough to do that.
Riley probably encouraged players to take classes pass/fail since that’s how he ran his program. C-level effort and results? Good enough! One more year! Hip hip hooray!
OSU has a policy that says athletes aren’t allowed to take pass fail classes. I’d imagine it’s an ncaa rule too.
The biggest driver of where guys majored was when practice was. Generally practice was some time in the afternoon so it limited what majors you could choose. Reason why is because a certain classes were only offered in the fall and were a prerequisite for a winter class. Few guys could get away with engineering or other science majors. Most settled for sociology or some liberal arts major.
I remember when Larry Fitzgerald was all proud he got his degree from UPhoenix, and I just rolled my eyes.
But, that being said, I don’t really think it matters if a degree is online or not so long as it’s from a good university. I mean people self-teach themselves and/or home school all kinds of difficult subjects and many times know more than college grads. I worked with a biologist who had a B.S. who knew more than those with Doctorates, etc. It’s really about learning and applying, however you choose to do it.
If you’re talking about medical doctors, surgeons, etc then a big no.
I was pretty impressed that of the seniors listed on senior day (can’t remember the exact number, 11 or 13?) only 4 of them were sociology majors I think; otherwise there was a little mix of majors in there.
Was at a large thxgiving gathering thursday which included a duck athlete. Was checking out his apple watch and when the gallery app opened, all it had was pictures of test notes/cheat sheets on it.
so you’re sayin UO professors aren’t any better than pac-12 referees? Oh the humanity! When you only slap someone on the wrist for being caught dead to rights cheating, you can expect the behavior to continue……………….
Yeah, but they weathered that storm and ended up winning by 18. Wasn’t the cleanest game by any means though, lots of turnovers at the end of the 3rd quarter. But they close so well.
1. OSU had two chances to make a big play following its opening touchdown drive. On the ensuing kickoff, Drew Kell forced a Charles Nelson fumble, but the ball trickled out of bounds before any Beavers could fall on it. Then on third-and-2 from the Ducks 30, Royce Freeman got just enough for a first down on a play where a couple Beavers reacted as if they thought the Beavers had stuffed the Oregon running back. By the end of the drive, Bralon Addison was reversing field and dodging tacklers and getting into the end zone for the Ducks’ first score.
*That was aided by holding on Mariota Lite inside the 5 yard line that wasn’t called.
4. After another Collins touchdown run capped that 98-yard drive and reduced the Ducks’ lead to 31-21 late in the third quarter, Oregon immediately answered with a 41-yard kickoff return by Nelson to give the Ducks solid field position for a possession that ended with Freeman’s fourth-down touchdown burst up the middle.
*that was aided by another holding call that apparently was so obvious even the announcers said it was
Don’t believe me on the Mariota Lite non call? Saw it on sportscenter last night and rewound and watched it 3 times. He was trailing the defender and holding him, finally letting go just before Addison got around him.
If anyone ever finds a replay of the game let me know. I’d like to DVR it and sit down and watch to see just how many blatant holding calls were ignored
Mentioned above that the Beavs are looking at JUCO QB Riley Ferguson. Not sure if it’s true or if there’s even mutual interest but he’s a former Tennessee recruit with a very impressive offer sheet.
I’d like to shake your hands and say ‘good game’ for yesterday. Looking forward to your new coach putting a different spin on the civil war.
Some people want to believe that just because the ducks have won 8 straight times, they’ll never lose again. Not me!
These rivalries have their moments for both sides. While I like winning better than losing, the sun comes up in Eugene and in Corvallis the next day regardless of the outcome. I know lots of great folks on both sides of the aisle.
I like that it was a competitive game and I don’t think any of the young men playing got injured. We’ll see you for edition number 120 next year up there.
Anyone want to speculate on who is getting told they don’t fit the GA plan? Why did ugwoebu never materialize this year?
Does anyone think our oline will be substantially better next year? Gav Andrews will be back, but josh Mitchell will be gone. Guess they will be more familiar with system….
“…Does anyone think our oline will be substantially better next year? …”
FWIW I don’t recall being impressed with the OL opening huge holes up for the RBs to run in. On the other hand I do recall the QB having to rush his reads because of the oncoming defenders.
Also, I’m unfamiliar with the depth of the OL but I suspect that it’s a case where the backups either aren’t that good or they’re lacking experience, size, strength, etc.
Thanks. I’m used to the Beavs being thin on the lines so your information shouldn’t be a surprise to me but I must admit I do find it a bit chilling/sobering. And I don’t drink. Maybe that’s my problem.
GO COACHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get out there and recruit your butts off.
I haven’t been too impressed with Andrews. He has size but his footwork is bad. Should be a guard, not a tackle imo.
Harlow, Seumalo and Stanton are starters I guess. Kearsley, Clarkson, Laiuna, Delp and maybe Brandel in the two deep. Laiuna seemed to play better yesterday but suspect all season…
Delp at NT would be interesting I think. Good size.
Peko was a good player – mch better than anticipated. Won’t miss the other two. Grimble never played enough due to injury. James isn’t a starter for most other P5 teams.
Was anyone following the game close enough to know if Helfrich had called off the dogs and was playing a lot of bench players in the second half? I’m most interested in if he was playing his 1st string D and if he ever put in a bunch of subs.
Obviously if he was playing the bench D players then this would take some of the glow off the 2nd half performance of the Beavs O. For me I don’t give a crap about the glow I just want to have a realistic understanding of what went on.
Who’s that kid the announcers were in love with? Charles Nelson Riley? I didn’t watch the game but had the broadcast streaming through speakers at work. Seems like I heard that dude’s name still being called at the end of the game. I don’t think Pellum could afford to pull starters at the end of the game, they may well have lost if they had.
Out all day and I finally check in….75 comments!!! I haven’t reviewed them yet and jumped straight to the bottom.
WTF after the best half of Beaver football in ten years and and obvious statement that the glory days of OSU football are imminent, only 75 AB’s take the time to weigh in!!! After you factor out Jack’s contributions it might boil down to two or three! Shake yourselves! JB
Coaches –
On field results – I have to give the staff an D for this year, it would have been an F if not for an inordinate amount of injuries. Several reasons why, none really bigger than the other.
1. The coaches chose to run the systems they know and the makeup of the roster didn’t fit on offense or defense. I believe they underestimated the talent on the team. Practice may have looked good but the players were overwhelmed in games.
2. IMO the coaches lost the players early in the season. When you’re establishing a new culture, coaches have to get players to buy in, especially the ones who are leaders. Seems like they went with “My way or the highway” toward the latter part of the year. Not saying this is the wrong way to do things but it’ll take longer to turn things around.
3. Player growth – I posed a question earlier this year of which players had a standout season? Even crappy teams will have a standout players. Nall had two good games, can’t consider that a standout campaign. Other showed flashes.
4. Offensive philosophy – It was hard to tell what it was. Seemed like it changed game to game. And when they had success, they couldn’t repeat it.
5. Few positives from this year to build on next year.
6. Lack of competitiveness – Too many blowouts. 7 games giving up more than 40+ points. Last 3 games 50+ points allowed. Arizona, UW, and Cal are combined 1 game over .500. Beavs were blown out by all three.
Off the field – Incomplete until February.
The recruiting is going well but it’s still a long ways away from signing day. I can’t recall of any off field incidents but when it does happen, it’ll be curious to see how Andersen deals with them.
The offseason things I will be watching,
1. Who transfers? Anybody significant?
2. Can they keep the recruiting class together?and or add to it. I can see why there are no OL in the recruiting class. They only lose Mitchell to graduation.
3. Does Andersen make any staff changes? Is he willing to part with someone when things are not working out?
I go to all the home games and I have left at halftime for two of them this year. I had never done that before. I hope this year is the bottom. It’s hard to keep donating year after year when you know it’s going to suck for the next couple. I would have liked to give the coaches a pass on this year but things went much worse than expected.
Bill: 20 thumb ups -or is it thumbs up or thumbs ups? In any event, you have succinctly put into words my jumbled thoughts about Gary Anderson and this football season. Especially the part about underestimating the talent on the team. I question whether it was as bad as constantly alluded to. The players were recruited to play in a starkly opposite system. I recently heard that much of the Panthers success this season owes to Ron Rivera adjusting to the players not to a set system.
Nall had “only” 2 good games at RB because of earlier coaching screw-ups – the extra weight, being moved into several different positions, not having a carry in the Utah game.
We’ll never know what went on within the team and with the coaches – unless one of the players being forced out decides to blab.
To me there are two kinds of coaches in the NCAA. Ones who can adjust their systems to get the most out of their players and others who need to have superior talent for their system to work. It seems like Andersen may be the latter.
That’s not the correct definitive. A successful coach gets consistent effort while teaching the most to his players. In turn, the players have to learn. Time in system is one of the ways to do this. Talent is the shortcut. Talent just happens to learn quickly because the game is slower for them.
When even talent doesn’t put out consistent effort, that’s what you get with OSU from 2010 to 2014 (with one year of effort… and three less losses if running the ball was a priority).
So now our question is who that talent is and how the rest do with time in system. We just got to see what a team looks like with 64% of a roster full of RS Frosh or younger. Can’t really say it was all fun.
tweet that BeavRecruiting posted is a classic. Folks in the national media are catching on about Riley. First Ted Miller and now Stewart Mandel at SI. Lindsay will be the final holdout, slashing and burning down Corvallis with every bit of energy she has; one can’t say intellect.
and then there’s this from Tom Shatel of the Omaha World Herald: “If they gave out trophies for maddening turnovers, unbelievable penalties and noggin-shaking play calling, this would have been one whale of a season for first year coach Mike Riley.” Right out of the Angrybeav playbook. I’m kinda glad Nebraska is getting a bowl bid: 5-8 is better than 5-7.
I could not tell if it was before or after the Iowa loss, but one bowl projector had NU playing Oregon in the Foster Farm Bowl”. How can you root against two teams playing against each other?
Banker failing yet again, to stop the spread……for the 8th year in a row. The poltergeist of Oregon follows Riley everywhere he goes. But it won’t happen.
There are 40 bowl games? There are what… 128 teams?
Are bowl games that lucrative? If they are, there has to be something illegal about them… unless ESPN just wastes good money for each and every one of them. I remember the days when the Poulan Weed-eater Bowl was a joke of a name. Now it’s the norm. Alums from everywhere get to gift 15 extra practices to crap teams like NU because they get bank from stupid people.
Those 15 practices should be the norm for the NCAA as a whole. It’s a joke that some schools who have not earned them get them anyway.
Just like allowing a SA to transfer without penalty when there is a change at the HC position, giving every team 15 practices after the final regular season game makes a lot of sense.
I read where ESPN needs a much live sports programming as it can get during December. They make a profit on the worst of the bowl games through advertising.
saw a news story today that ESPN is losing subscribers at such a high rate that it is beginning to have serious effect on Disney’s bottom line. Truth is, much that we have come to dislike about college football of late (proliferation of bowl games; stupid start times; the constant push for a playoff and now an enlargement of same; the ubiquity of that stupid Duck, the SEC complex, to name just a few) are ALL a function of the ESPN juggernaut. Counter intuitively to college sports, it has much to gain from ESPN’s diminution
I haven’t watched a college football game other than the Beavs all year (and 6 Nebraska games). It’s just impossible to watch the product anymore. Between the same schools every year and the announcers getting boners over the dumbest shit to the overly compressed (limiter?) commercials. Then all the corruption and BS media narratives. It’s brutal. This won’t end well for the sport, and this pay for play thing will accelerate the decline.
What the fuck is up with the plethora of stupid fucking commercials during college football? Jake from State Farm. Dr Peepee and Little Sweet. I’m to the point I’m rooting for Bill to just say fuck it and face rape that stupid Peter Pan ginger
Eh, I pulled the link after giving some thought to how unsubstantiated it ultimately was. I’ll repost if more sources come up, but until then, I’m hoping it’s not true.
Stanford helmet stickers……brings up two OT questions:
–what is the graphic those stickers show? Looks like a red sombrero.
–stickers in general: some teams use em, many don’t. What’s the feeling here of the value of helmet stickers to recognize good individual performance? Would StHC throw a fit if he couldn’t cover his lid first??
No hate involved, merely using the example of the most generally recognized prima donna personality on the team to elicit discussion of the perils of the sticker recognition system. Seems to me very careful management is required when stickers form a permanent record of “atta-boys” given by coaches. Much less downside to giving pats on the back and verbal recognition. Maybe that is part of the reason so many teams don’t use stickers.
FWIW, I see a lot of talent/skill in Seth’s play and attribute some part of it to his thirst for glory (something that can be said, to some degree, of most successful players). Both he and GA deserve kudos if he embraces his new role.
Now, what are those stickers on the Stanford helmets? Sure not trees or cardinals.
I don’t even care if he’s a prima dona so long as he’s not playing QB.
TCannon thinks you hate on Collins because he is black lol. He says that about everyone
Like you know that. Why are you assuming I’m white? Everyone is discriminated against.
And you accused people of hating MM because he was black a month ago. Check yourself.
I don’t follow your logic. Not seeing how Seth’s productive Civil War performance relates to the potential problems in managing ego’s when using a helmet sticker recognition program.
Not much interest in this topic, so I’ll probably move on.
BTW, some internet guru’s say Stanford’s stickers are axe heads.
Oklahoma is in. Iowa/Sparty winner is in. Clemson and Alabama are in with wins next weekend. If either of them lose I can’t see 2 loss Stanford jumping a 1 loss Clemson, tOSU or Iowa should they lose to Sparty. Iowa also beat that same Northwestern team handily that beat Tree. USC winning today did not help Tree’s cause. I can see them moving up to 7th on Tuesday but I don’t see them moving into the top 4 no matter what happens next weekend. Just my two worthless pesos.
Has anybody else here heard about the duck hidden within the newer Beaver logo? I know it doesnt look totally obvious, but at the same time, would you put it past a Nike based group of designers to try pulling it was off after the sports bra uniform design? I cropped the logo to hopefully make it stand out. His eyeball is the same as the beaver eyeball and he’s facing left. Also he’s orange.
Huge Beavers fan but started when they hired Gary Andersen. My son played football and went to youth camp by Gary.
Changed his and our lives for the better and we are always so very appreciative ?
I will be watching the bowl game very exciting this time of year to see who they could play.
Andersen we still will always be number 1 best coach for us as beaver fans! I also think that in particular, Storm Woods will stand out next season as he performs rehab on injuries everyone expected. Coach running backs always are good!
I speak in riddles. But this one gives me the idea to write something dumb then run it through an English/Spanish translator… then a Spanish/Russian translator… then a Russian/Swahili one… and finally back to English.
Golly, I hear my Cornhuskers might get into a bowl at 5-7. Does that mean Mark and I get an extra year on our contracts? Boy, that’d be a neat deal. Maybe I can talk Mr. Eichorst into throwing in a new bike and a pair of ergonomic mittens for Mark if we find our identity and go 6-7. Hip hip hooray!
CW performance gives some hope for the offseason. Missing a bowl actually will be a help for recruiting this year as the coaches have nothing else to focus on.
Job 1: Protect the existing verbals from the poachers.
Bring in a JC QB
Have to go heavy on some JC DL’s or next years D will be just as sucky.
I’m with Angry about Shitake. Jury is still out. D was Willingham’s baby at Utah and they were pretty good this year without him. Aranda staying in Madison screwed me twice.
I agree that the jury is still out on Sitake… But look with what he had to work with… A lot of the second and third string players played better than the first string this year… Makes it tough to get the whole unit to play well when the established starters are constantly missing assignments… They showed at times they could stop teams but they just weren’t consistent… I don’t think that blame goes on Sitake… I mean compare Sitake to Banker, Vernon Adams had around 30 yards rushing… Banker has never shown that he could stop a scrambling QB… Pretty sure VA put up 7 touchdowns on the Beavs when he was a eastern Washington… Sitake > Banker by a long shot… Winingham is a good defensive mind no joke but GA and Sitake are no slouches.

Peko was a good player – mch better than anticipated. Won’t miss the other two. Grimble never played enough due to injury. James isn’t a starter for most other P5 teams.
Truer words were never written.
October 29: State of the U writes that Alabama OC Lane Kiffin is perfect for Miami, because the Hurricanes need to be jerks again. You know in your heart this is true.
Georgia fired their coach this morning. That recruiting class could implode, and Lockett is busy down there. Doubt anyone would play at OSU over Georgia but maybe given the immediate playing time at OSU and uncertainty at GA.
The only example that comes to mind is Steven Nelson. Had a UGA offer but chose guaranteed playing time at OSU. Think he was from the state of GA as well.
The 5* QB they have, Jacob Eason would be amazing, but every team will want him. He spent much of the year as the #1 overall ranked recruit on Rivals/Scout.
Also a pro-style guy
Not sure that pro style label matters much. Baldwin had Greyson at CSU and he had no wheels, Garretson isn’t a runner, etc. They also kept and started Mitchell who is technically a pro style QB, according to rivals. Funny that MM was considered dual threat yet Mitchell is probably faster…
I doubt they have a shot at Eason but he’s from the PNW and would start day 1. Not sure what the Georgia QB situation is.
The bottom line, though, is all those recruits are suddenly options for all teams with immediate needs. Hopefully some more coaches get canned soon. Unfortunately beavs are running out of scholarships, though. GA’s last few signings haven’t been very impressive looking players… maybe should have saved schollies for situations like this.
Unless UGA gets someone Patterson, it’s a net loss.
Eason’s first offer was from OSU. but that really means nothing. He’ll have his choice of school, the beavs will not get a sniff. If he went to WSU, he’d throw for 5,000 yards a year.
There is a good chance that Luke Hollingsworth will transfer. It is a mutual agreement between him and staff. Not saying it will happen, but I’m putting it out there.
He played in 2 games and had 2 tackles this year. I do remember him playing at michigan, getting blown off the LOS, but, then agian, who didn’t in that game.
I know Angry is right all the time, well except saying we had the best WR corp in the Pac12, but I would like to see what Collins could do in learning the system and working on his throwing, and reads. I think coming here in the Spring rushed his development, he still hasn’t been in the program for a year. He would have benefited from a redshirt, although his athleticism would have gotten on the field. The reason I say this is that its clear he is the best player on the field at times, and you want your best player with the ball in his hands at all times. I saying I would like to see if he can learn the system and work on his throws enough to be that QB. Angry seems convinced we don’t have the time (ten years) to wait for that development. If it could happen sooner I think that is best case scenario.
Possibly, but good WR’s catch passes that hit their hands, It shouldn’t matter if it was wobbly, or low, or behind them a step. If you can touch it, you should catch it (within reason). That last offensive drop was the epitome of the reciever core this year.
Bolden should have been converted to DB long ago. He could have been a return specialist/DB and probably been pretty good at it. Like Cliff Harris without the weed.
If I was a voting man I’d probably have to go sideways on this remark.
I do think most of the Beavs WR’s would look very good at SC or Cal, but their play this year was hampered by more than the QB’s and system. Looking at the entire season, it seems to me a significant portion of their problems are on the receivers themselves…simply too many catchable balls dropped.
And, yes, I do recognize that QB’s are to blame for some drops when they have made receivers gun-shy by throwing those suicide passes. But not enough to change my mind.
Just as this staff has made a connection to Simonton/Bernard/Jackson, I’m hoping they’ll bring in the likes of Hass/Stroughter/Rodgers/Wheaton/Cooks to talk to these current players. The hands sure weren’t impressive and it seems like these kids may need some talk on work ethic from players who walked the talk. From OLive reports, it sounds like Bernard and Rodgers bros were at CW, but it wasn’t clear if they addressed the players or not.
Here’s hoping Bolden is limited to primarily special teams, and is a back-up WR.
Yve has been back with the program for 2 years. I saw Sammy at the Colorado game. Also Sabby walking around with Giovanni Bernard. A big part in bringing osu greats back in to the program has been what Yve Bernard is involved with. That dude is doing a great job. I agree sir, keep them bringing their presence around the program. Would be cool to see Chad and TJ or even Nick Barnett on the defense side get involved.

Posted this separate so as to not make the last thread too long:
I predicted a 2-10 season back before the season started, but I can’t find the thread I posted it in (we have too many), and I was spot on, unfortunately. We knew this was going to be a rough year. I said throughout the season to my friends that Oregon State, for lack of a better term was “taking a knife to gunfights” in the Pac-12 and I think that showed. The talent disparity is more of a black mark on Riley’s utter lack of fire and unwillingness to even talk to recruits above three stars than Andersen’s inability to coach. We know these guys can get this job done: they have before.
For those fretting about Sitake, he didn’t have much to work with either, and what he did have got injured by the end of the season. I was at the Civil War game with a good view of the sideline, and he seemed like the most exasperated person on the sideline on several occasions. Oregon has an offense that will do that to a lot of those guys, but he looked more like someone who was frustrated because the players weren’t in proper positioning. The body language I saw out of him wasn’t so much of someone who had given up as “I don’t know what else I can do, these guys aren’t executing what we talked about.”
Baldwin is an enigma at this point in time, and I’m willing to give him a pass for now, because let’s face it. He didn’t have a true quarterback all year, just several green freshmen, none who appear to be starting material in the Pac-12. Collins is a head case, Mitchell had one subpar outing. McMaryion we’ve seen the least of, but if he was any better than the other two, he’d have passed them on the depth chart a long time ago. Also, keep in mind Oregon’s defense has been a sieve this year. So let’s not put a whole lot of stock into that yet.
The Pac-12 is going to lose a lot of seniors and redshirt juniors next year. Goff could conceivably return to California, but all reports are he will be the first NFL Draft pick. Stanford loses Hogan and its entire offensive line class. Washington looks like they could be scary. They had the least experienced team in the country and managed six wins. WSU is hard to figure out for sure… that could go either way. USC, Arizona State, Oregon and Colorado all lose their QBs. I’m not saying we’re gonna go worst to first (here’s hoping) but there’s a significantly wider window next year than there has been a while in this conference and it will be an ample time to try and “make a move up.”
The body language I saw out of him wasn’t so much of someone who had given up as “I don’t know what else I can do, these guys aren’t executing what we talked about.”
Agree with everything you said. Especially the above quote.
I saw an interview with Sitake late in the season. To paraphrase: we keep telling these guys how to play defense and they still don’t. If they don’t at this point, maybe they just can’t play defense. And maybe another guy can.
—
We will clean house and bring in guys that can and will play defense.
“We know these guys can get this job done: they have before”
Thank you. Been saying that since day 1 and preaching patience. OSU had 52 freshman on the roster and a host of other non Pac caliber players. I’ll admit I drank the kool aid and thought 6 wins was a possibility at first. Fail on my part there
We need some lineman in the upcoming recruiting class! So many offers but no nibbles or commitments. What is our staff doing? They have recruits waiting but haven’t offered yet. The coaches are talking to this guy but haven’t offered. Why aren’t we setting up for the future? ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0TuWrq6gKc
We have 16+ o-linemen and 7 players with playing time. That is the last position we need people.
The kids highlights were ok he has good feet and good hands and strikes good, but he is sloooow in open space. Watch when he pulls or on screen passes it’s like he is on 3/4 speed compared to the playing speed.
I agree in terms of numbers and this immediate cycle; but if they are weak, soft, slow like Riley’s other recruits, or don’t buy in to Andersen et al, then they need to start being replaced too don’t they?
Like I said they have 7 returning guys who played this year, well 6 plus an injury in fall camp. So we have enough starters right now. So you have 15 guys to choose from to fill your second string with, even if 60% of them suck and can’t be fixed, you’re still in good shape. And you dont necessarily need to travel 10 o-linemen, you can get away with 8-9. The o-line is going to be fine, I’m more worried about every other position on the team with acception to maybe running back and kickers.
As far as replacement, not really just get rid of the dead weight and you’re still ahead. 15-16 scholarship guys with a couple of walkon guys and your set. So if they can find 5 guys in the remaining group they are good to go. And I said they had 16+ o-linemen, they have 22 on the roster, but I’m not sure on scholarship vs walkon in that group.
GA specifically noted very first thing when he took over that we had way too many O linemen, and that was the first position he’d have to thin/balance out.
I imagine he’ll only take a 4* type home run. Otherwise they’ll just strengthen and work with what we have.
Upcoming Rodent Bowl will feature new OC and QB coach for Gophers. I recall OSU playing a Big Ten team with a recently shuffled staff when things worked out well for the Beavs ………Badgers in Corvallis.
Of course this isn’t in Corvallis and there was that fresh staff at Michigan this year. Time will tell.
This was about three years too late. Remember how you felt when you heard the news about MR?
It has lifted me out of my post season depression. There is at least hope. The OC was also a very mediocre OL coach. Thank god.
He was slender before the season. It was all stress eating. The really amazing thing was the OC he just fired was actually bigger than him, before gastric bypass surgery a year ago. Between Kill and two coordinators, the staff looked like something out of the revenge of the nerds.
Claeys has actually been an excellent DC, but as you can see there are some issues.
So given the season was a wash, I feel the Collins expirement may have been a smashing success. He’s a great addition when used in the role as ‘playmaker’. But he was never going to a school that wouldn’t let him play QB. But he is not a D1 QB, but his head was way too big to accept that. So instead, we lure the ‘playmaker’ to Corvallis and let him play his heart out at QB, until he proves to himself that he isn’t the next all-world QB. And then he’s shown his true potential as ‘playmaker.’ Gets to score 3 TDs in the Civil War. And now he goes into the offseason with a new appreciation for his proper role as playmaker. A decision he was allowed to come to on his own, rather than being forced into that role. Not sure if it was really planned, but it’s working out great for the future ‘playmaker’
I honestly think that if Collins redshirted and then sat his redshirt freshman year, he would have made a decent QB. His tape from high school said everything. Runner first, passer second.
I still think he could be decent but he would need to sit as the backup for a year or two and spend a summer with a QB coach. Now with him tagged as a hybrid role, it won’t happen.
Seems to make more sense than most other explanations. I guess Crowton could have been brought in to be the third-party that got to tell Collins the news about a position switch. I think Collins can be a leader on this team (in the manner of Dylan Wynn) when he’s in a more natural position and succeeding like he thinks he should.
StCH is no doubt an athlete and can help the team but comparing him to Wynn from a leadership standpoint? C’mon, that dude was in his own special category in terms of leadership and discipline. Granted, Collins might evolve and become a leader but the shrugging of the shoulders, constantly looking down and away on top of the showboating makes me think leadership is still a ways off. Some say he’s just a competitive guy OR simply he could be an a**hole.
On the other hand have you seen Garretson taking care of cancer stricken kids? I’m still not sold on him being the starter next year but just the way he carries himself from a small sample I’ve seen is so much farther ahead than the other three. MM looked like he found a bit of mojo but both he and NM are seriously lacking in that department.
Have you watched Cam Newton play? Currently leading a 10-0 team whilst doing most of the things you mentioned. Leaders come in all shapes and sizes. It’s not just the most proper guy that leads everyone
Points well taken; my point was facile. I was recalling Wynn’s on-field energy, infectious enthusiasm and desire. In my mind, Collins was like that in the cw. Wynn would exemplify ga’s “toughness” and sc has not so far.
OT, but just finished Soaked in Bleach. Anyone interested in that story should check it out. Poorly made documentary in that it isn’t objective and they don’t go into enough detail about the characters, but Grant has a wealth of info/facts that point to murder. Most people suspected it was murder, but he ties things together.
Many? Count me as many that think it was suicide. For the record I worked with a guy recently (drummer) that his band opened for Nirvana before Nevermind came out and they hit it big. Said Cobain was a whiny, egotistical bitch
My uncle has played in cover bands around Aberdeen for years. One of his drummers years back was one of the pre Dave Grohl drummers in Nirvana. He quit the band when they started playing out too much because he didn’t want to lose his job a Burger King.
Why do you think that? Not just “he was a whiner and junkie so it was suicide”, but actual facts that point to suicide. For example, there are facts that point to it not being a suicide (discharged shell on the wrong side of the body, gun barrel in the wrong hand, etc). Maybe watch the movie or read Grant’s site. He worked for Love and has recordings of the phone calls in her own words. Another bizarre piece is Grant searches the house with Cobain’s best friend, the friend doesn’t tell him there’s an upstairs attack(greenhouse), next day they come back to search and there’s a note on the stairs from another friend saying “Curt, can’t believe you managed to hide in the house and avoid me.”….the best friend still doesn’t mention to the detective there’s an upstairs room. So they don’t find the body. When the note fails, Courtney Love hires an electrician to specifically go work on the lighting in the greenhouse (where Cobain’s body was). Love’s attorney, who was a neutral source since she was also Cobain’s attorney, found in a backpack left at her place a piece of paper with letter templates on it, as if someone was trying to trace/write in someone else’s handwriting. This is why the last 4 lines of the “suicide note” look different. Because it was a note to fans saying he was leaving the music business before those 4 lines were added. There is a LOT more circumstantial evidence, like Cali DeWitt getting 30k from Love shortly after the murder to “go into rehab”…
The Seattle PD really botched the case by determining suicide before investigating. Even the “Rome suicide attempt” was not labeled that way until after Cobain died. He called it an accident while alive, and the doctor who treated him said it wasn’t a suicide attempt, but Love leaks to the media it was, and they went with it. Cobain was set to meet with Greg Sage two weeks after his death to record acoustic Lead Belly covers, and by all accounts was excited about it (and his new daughter), yet suddenly he kills himself. Everyone buys that false narrative because he was a “junkie” (we later learn he did heroine due to severe back/stomach pain from scoliosis pinching nerves). If the guy was a politician or clean cut aristocrat his murder would be taken seriously. This is why I was saying to T. Cannon up above that everyone, including whites, are discriminated against. In this case, Cobain was because of his life habits and people’s interpretation of his “dark lyrics”.
I’m not a fan of lazy narratives, false narratives, injustice, shoddy police work, etc. At the least this case deserves to be reopened and examined by many objective sources and the public (Seattle PD won’t release the photos, and Love threatens lawsuit/emotional distress any time someone tries to reignite the case).
as someone who’s never been hooked on heroin I can’t say. What I can say is I highly doubt he was thinking clearly at any point in time in the weeks leading up to his death. Drugs are bad, mmmkay? We will never know. And I for one am not going to waste my time thinking about it. Could he have been murdered? Possibly? I don’t believe it, but to each their own
And as you pointed out, most of the information you mentioned, is circumstantial if even true at all.
Well circumstantial evidence is enough for a conviction.
So don’t think about it — that’s your prerogative. But you took the time to stop and write that he committed suicide, so you are either going against yourself and thinking about it or just rehashing the mainstream narrative. Which is it? The mainstream narrative has huge holes that are worth thinking about.
Crappy attitude. People should always care about justice and not use a lazy narrative or ad hominem like “junkie” to dismiss the larger underlying issue. You care enough to keep commenting how much you don’t care, which just implies a lot of other crap, too.
Sorry, but this was a lazy narrative that wanders thru speculation and nuanced interpretation. Investigation will not bring him back nor will it bring justice to anyone. Legacy? Maybe, maybe not. Legacy is not bought and paid for. Legacy is earned over time. At best, Cobain’s lifestyle contributed to his demise. At worst a lesson about us, fireflies in the night of a gilded age, ending with a fly swatter.
“The third-year pro out of Oregon State was the individual star in the Steelers’ 39-30 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, establishing career bests in receptions (nine) and receiving yards (201). “
So it sounds Biley and the boys are pretty much guaranteed a bowl bid thanks to Pellini’s academic standards. Unless of course they have the pride to turn down the bid (which they won’t).
I guess it has a little bit of rooting interest for me to see is if NU can achieve a historic 8 loss season, as long as they don’t get a 6-6 Sun Belt team in their bowl. Pedal one more time around LIncoln, Mikey…..the season lives!
That is pathetic…they will likely rationalize it by the “closeness’ of some of their losses, and the extra practice time and “player development.” Said development never seemed to occur and carryover to the following season when Riley was at OSU.
all over the Eugene rag today was that the Alamo Bowl would certainly pick the ducks. Despite no word, quotes or inclination from the Alamo Bowl committee they would. My guess is they would take USC as they’ve never played in the Alamo Bowl. Denial, not just a river in Eqypt
The Neb fan base is highly delusional. Everything about their sports programs is by definition, the best. They thought they would come into B1G and dominate in football. They are like the the 75 year old ex Hollywood beauty that looks in the mirror and sees a 25 year old staring back at them.
lmao. you got blasted by our worst team in 60+ years. most of our sports programs aren’t very good to begin with. most of the fans were predicting 7-8 wins, while goofers thought they would be in the B1G championship
Caleb Smith made comments the other day about filtering out the players who dont want to be there. It led to some trolling. Entertaining reading if youre totally bored today.
He’s making claims that he also scouts for the next level (nfl). Maybe Riley used him in the past? Or he’s an Internet white knight troll, who knows. Who cares, really.
And angry’s right, he wasn’t good enough, now his family is mad, oh well, your kid wasn’t good enough, get over it. Sour grapes is code for ” but we spent his NFL money before he got into the league, what do we do now?”.
I don’t know about unprofessional. He’s… oh what’s the word I’m looking for… sounds like athletic… only with no L and a P in the front… I just can’t think of it right now.
I’m sorry, but despite what I’ve seen on the field and read with my own two eyes off the field, Caleb Smith does not strike me as “team leader” material
Yeah, doesn’t sound like a good fit at all. Read some of the comments on the article I posted. It sounds like this kid is just Nick Mitchell, in a different uniform. Slow release, inaccurate and lost his job at the end of the season.
If there’s interest in and from JUCO QBs, then those relationships had to be developed over the course of the season. Some of those guys only get one season to play and gather film for D1 teams. Then it’s about a month of recruiting if you want to sign in the 2015 class.
JUCO kids are notoriously quiet about recruiting until they commit. It just feels that it’s so sudden because of that.
I assuming much news positive will continue be flowing with Gary. He snacks don very bhealth items and is conservative with standard across the operations.
Vequit by all means to end necessarily!
Very appreciated coach as a giant person. My son knows him from youth camp by Gary.
Although I understand the reasoning behind this, it’s a recipe for disaster. Universities are not courts of law, they are run on their own set of rules. And those rules are ass back words. There is no innocent or guilty, no he said she said, no burden of proof. By their standards, the accused are guilty, in some cases with no chance to defend themselves. This will not end well for universities that expel students with no proof other than the word of another person. The only thing this is going to help, are the civil rights lawyers lining there pockets with tax payer money.
They’re only denying transfers who are ineligible to return to their own schools. If they want to take it up with their old school, fine. We don’t need your baggage. Either get rid of it, or go away.
Whatshisname from Nikegon is doing just that now by suing the school. It will become apparent soon that university admins are not legal courtrooms or detectives. And those are what are required in order to serve justice. All else is pretend and will be prosecuted itself.
Common sense has to win out eventually. If there is even one rape, there is a problem. But it should also be investigated, prosecuted and punished as such. College isn’t some catch and release for rapists–a place where you are simply removed and can go on freely to the next place. If anyone was truly serious about stopping rape (which will never happen), they ought to start by putting actual rapists in jail first instead of pawning them off on the next target-rich environment. And that’s if we’re to believe all or most who are accused are guilty.
Read what I posted below. It’s not the fact that there are rapists moving from one school to another. It’s the fact that innocent people are being accused, kicked out of school, and forced to defend themselves but not given a chance too, and now Ray wants to ban those people from enrolling in OSU because they were simply accused. Not because the actual courts said so, because some chicken shit administrator deems anyone accused as guilty. It’s a kangaroo fucking court, with no authority.
Innocents being accused is a bad thing. What I’m saying is deal with it.
And the rate of innocents being accused is about as overstated as the rate of rape on campus. I ran through the numbers once with a couple people in a discussion. The “rape advocates” would have you believe the rate is 20% on campus. That just doesn’t work in real life. Running through crime stats won’t give you the best picture, because college is, as I said, a target-rich environment. But it’s not 15 to 20 times the national rate. We discovered the range of 2-8% kept coming up (or .05+-.03).
That rate was the most likely for actual rape as well as the rate for innocents accused. The rate is higher than the norm for the general populous for rape, but it is right in line for false accusations.
But the number of those either prosecuted or removed from school is less than .004, less than the national norm and certainly less as a percentage given that campuses do have a higher rate. That means the very people who are correct about campuses having a higher rate are doing the issue a disservice by first overstating it then trampling all over the proper prosecution of it. That also means there are inherent flaws in the improper “prosecutions” which the falsely accused can easily exploit through proper prosecutions of their own.
Understand also that “rape advocates” are almost always using an invalid study to bolster their argument. I say almost always because there are actual sociologists who look at the methodology and the standard deviations for that study and laugh at having to do anything more than point at those to argue against it.
But those who would defend “men” or whatever did a study of their own to try to counter the opposite myth. And they did it by asking a larger sample across a wider demographic. But that demographic was men themselves. And they didn’t start by asking if alcohol was involved, immediately throwing the rape myth study out of whack. They started by asking the surveyed if they had ever committed rape.
I know this is a blunt tool just by the sound of it. But it was fascinating nonetheless. I can’t remember the link off hand, so some of the following numbers are from a memory where I have made them more intuitive than rote.
What they found was that 2.5% of respondents admitted to rape with intent. That looked like a wrong number when compared to the .05+-.03 I used above until the questions addressed habitual criminology. I can’t remember if 40% or 60% responded that they were serial offenders. I want to say 60%, but 40% would be more in line with cases like the AMA hiding the 2.5% of doctors responsible for two-thirds of all malpractice by letting them float from state to state without consequence… or Catholic priests being hidden the same way.
Regardless, if 60% of 2.5% of respondents say they are habitual or serial offenders, it starts to bring all the numbers together (again, intuitively without stating actual studies). Those respondents admitted to a mean of about 6 total offenses. I’m sure the median is lower, but for net stats that makes the rate of rape on college campuses about 10% (I think 7% if 40% is the number… and I want to accept that number since it also falls within .05+-.03… but I don’t want to make the conclusion fit a previous norm… which makes me think the shock of 60% was correct).
IIRC, that discussion also brought up the prosecution and reporting procedures for college campuses. I don’t quite remember anything about that part, but it turned out that campuses who reported low numbers were more unsafe than those who reported a higher number. Apparently hiding the truth makes for a more unsafe world.
Make no mistake, overstating the truth is a form of hiding it. But so is a bunker mentality (duh?).
What Ray is doing is not blaming anyone. He is simply making it more difficult for serial offenders to set up camp at a new gig. It’s not perfect because a part of serial crime is that they don’t get caught. But it does serve notice that OSU is not a bunker mentality or hyperbole type school. We know what bunker mentality looks like with the mess that exists here in Eugene. I’m sure someone can come up with another on the other side of the spectrum. But being soundly in the middle is not being contentious with both ends simply because both ends want to be contentious. It’s just being right.

Oregon State announces Nick Mitchell, Malik Gilmore and Luke Hollingsworth and Chris Hayes have left the program.
So I was going to post this earlier, but now 4 of the players I intended to list have indeed left the program (Mitchell, Gilmore, Hollingsworth, and Hayes). Here are the other candidates for being let go, at least in my mind:
Brandon Arnold, So. DB
Chris Brown, Jr. RB
Devin Chappell, RJr. DB
Rahmel Dockery, Jr. WR
Damien Haskins, So. RB
Bobby Keenan, RJr. OL
Robert Olson, RFr. OL
Caleb Saulo, Jr. LB
Justin Strong, So. DB
Noke Tago, Jr. DL
Bright Ugwoegbu, RFr. LB
Strong and Haskins seem like good bets to stay. Strong will likely enter camp as a starter and Haskins is a guy who screams of needing more carriers. To your point he could either be frustrated with that or the staff could explain their plan for him which would hopefully keep him on board..
Those are the only two I would fret over losing since Guyton is already gone.
Football isn’t the problem with Strong, he was concussed severely and never passed the concussion protocol. I think he’s a medical retirement candidate.
Damn, I came up with a very, very similar list today and also didn’t post it. I think Chappell stays though, but I hadn’t put Chris Hayes on my list either since I think he was a walk-on? My list also has…
Brandon Arnold just isn’t very good at football and he’s got more competition than he’ll be able to beat out for even a spot in the rotation next year.
Chris Brown and Damien Haskins – RB is crowded as hell with talent coming in, so I think at least one, probably both are gone.
Devin Chappell – I think he’s a good kid and a hard worker. He played so much earlier this year, I think he might be allowed to stick around for depth. In fact, he started Civil War. I think he stays.
Rahmel Dockery – similar to the RB position, we bring in a lot of better, younger talent.
Bobby Keenan, Robert Olson – considering our issues at OL and the fact that neither even came close to seeing the field, I’d say they’re both gone. I’m not sure Keenan didn’t already leave the program, I haven’t seen or heard a single thing about him all season.
Caleb Saulo – We lack talent at the LB position and I think all the young guys we bring in, he’d never start again. But he did start 9 games this year, I could see him sticking around for depth. It’s kind of weird how much he fell out of favor though. Wouldn’t be shocked either way.
Justin Strong – is almost guaranteed due to serious concussion issues. Even if they like him as a football player, I think he’s done with the game of football.
Bright Ugwoebu – He allegedly has a pretty poor/entitled attitude from what I’ve heard, so I doubt we see him back.
Noke Tago – lacks talent, never saw the field – like…never. Zero tackles this year. He wasn’t listed as injured and still didn’t travel to Oregon game, not even sure he’s still on the team.
—
Guys on my list that aren’t on yours:
Charles Okonkwo – I just get the feeling he never had enough to get into the rotation this year, why would he be able to in the future? Maybe they do like him and he was hurt? Hard to say.
Brent VanderVeen – I think he’s bought in to the new team, but we use so few tight ends, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone just to try to get some playing time to show what he can do.
Mitchell and Gilmore were on my list. I’ll never forget Gilmore giving up on route at ASU in 2013 when he was Mannion’s second or third read. Sean placed the ball right where Gilmore was supposed to be. Not surprised he ended up on defense, and even there he was terrible. To say he was shadowing UW receivers two weeks ago is generous. Keenan is on my list of likely to transfer. Dockery should be but probably won’t because of limited eligibility. If he stays it’s probable for scout team duty. There’s a reason Mike Leach ran him out of Pullman. That should have been a clue
Now I know why the say a mind is a terrible thing to waist. I agree Malik learned as a Ocjaa player never to quit on a route and if you have ever had the pleasure to speak to him he would be the 1st to say that. Zero excuses. However we having a saying in the family that my uncle told me was “if you are a dummy be a quite dummy; don’t open you mouth and let everyone know it”. You are talking shit about things you know nothing about. Malik has not made any decision to transfer from OSU. Malik has had his exist interview with a coach and Malik had been looking to make a transition from ball to intermship or helping out the program in away that would allow him to achieve his MBA weeks if not months prior to the end of the season. He is a pac 12 academic all star. An to be honest has done way more for this fucking team than you uninformed ass could even imagine. So please don’t state foolish shit on the internet an act like you are a talent evaluator because your are not. And if Malik does decide to play at a different school he the terrible db who has never played DB until this season I can promise will have NO problem making the team and playing.
I wasn’t the one who reported he was transferring. someone earlier in the thread did. I wish him well in his future endeavors. thanks for the corrective.
That’s my job to report correct info regarding the boy. He would never reply or defend himself verbally. He has told me numerous times not to comment on anything I read or hear about him because I like he am an ambassador for this program. Which is something that he is extremely proud of. Although I am personally disappointed in the football career Malik has had at OSU. I’m excited for what the future holds for him if he decides to join a new school with a new set of eyes playing the position he was recruited to play. An for the future direction the Beavs program will take to get them back into conference contenders.
I always thought he should bulk up and move to TE. He seemed too slow to play WR in the Pac-12, but had a big frame that could add weight. I thought the transition to DB or LB was stupid. He doesn’t have the speed or hips for that.
That’s awesome he excels in the classroom. I was pretty high on the guy for a long time but thought he’d have to switch positions. As a WR I thought he’d be best served in the redzone, but they never used him like that. I felt he got a raw deal, tbh, with all the positional moves and not maximizing his talent
If you’re going to start a post with “A mind is a terrible thing to waist” slamming another individual, might be best to not have said post riddled with spelling and grammatical errors.
PS, in this instance it’s waste. Good luck to your boy wherever he ends up in life. I’m sure Riley and co did him no favors.
Yep that’s my son. Took a while to understand the vibe, culture, of the blog but enjoy and appreciate that conversation. I agree with some of your views on his speed, Malik is similar to a Jordan Payton at ucla. That’s what he was recruited by old regime and current wr coach at OSU. There are some facts I choose not to convey at this time or in this forum I’m sure you understand for obvious reasons but. The lack of playing time created the perfect environment for school goals. We take the student athlete status serious. There are no guarantees in this business and football will end one way or another. Many kids on the team have to do a ton of soul searching this off season thankfully this entire senerio was just plan b for Malik.
Well if you want to talk about those issues in private shoot me an email (contact page on the right). Many people write in private and can vouch I don’t share anything. It would be interesting to hear details about how Riley and Andersen are different from a player’s perspective, and also to get deeper inside the culture and hear what is going on. If and when you want to vent or just inform me…
Will you be able to let us know if he is really who he claims to be? There was a big difference in style, attitude and literacy from his “mind is a terrible thing to waist” post to his more congenial later post. There seem to be a lot of imposters who float in and out of here.
Angry question, attempted to use the contact link on the side of the page. But since I’m not to familiar with the the format I was not able to make any sense out of using it to email you. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated
Good for him. Most fans don’t understand these kids are students first, athletes second. Sounds like Malik has his head on straight. And an MBA, man that’s a load for a student athlete.
I am real. And have very little, time, energy, nor anything to gain by lying about I’m identity on a blog. I’m more interested in making sure facts not conjecture are what’s being stated about my son. Opinions about his talent or play I’m used too. Learned how to listen to EVERYONE/EVERYTHING about him since He played varsity ball as a freshman at North Torrance high school.
I apologize for any grammatical, or spelling errors that have or may occur when I write or reply to a perceived person on a blog. I am not a texting guy. I prefer speaking to people in person or phone that way what I say or they say cannot be misconstrued. However I meant what I stated regarding being uninformed posting comments. I also realize that this person was only commenting on what was released by a reporter who very often is not accurate. So it’s not the posters fault. But I don’t do the negative shit talking thing about young men who if you were in their face you would do the right thing which is ask their side of the issue first. Then make a informed comment or state an opinion. But then again I’m a old school cat, from a different upbringing, who operates from a different G code.
I know most people are over this, but I checked some Nebraska media to see about NU actually going to a bowl game with a losing record and found this. If you want to see Nebraska media call into question Langsdorf’s play calling, and lack of commitment to the run, this may still entertain you. Here’s a statement that likely looks familiar:
“Back to the point: How much do Langsdorf and head coach Mike Riley really want to run the ball? How much are they willing to stick to it when the Huskers struggle early? And will they choose personnel based on the pass game or the run game? Again: It doesn’t much matter which one it is. Just pick. Really pick. Take the bowl practices to do it.”
“Without enough 6-6 teams to fill the 80 bowl spots, the NCAA announced Monday that teams with a 5-7 record would be selected to fill the remaining spots based on the highest Academic Progress Rate.
That means that Nebraska, with an APR of 985 over the previous four years, would be No. 1 on the list of teams with five wins.”
…wait, I DON’T get another year on my contract at Nebraska for making a bowl? And I still have to stand slackjawed on the sideline – er, I mean work extra to prepare for the bowl game? Shucks, that’s not a neat deal…
what stood out to me in that article was another maxim from the Angrybeavs playbook on Riley:
neither the best linemen nor running backs are seeing the field.
Geez there’s a lot of guys leaving. And I know there’s gonna be a lot more left. One of the reasons I never notice is because guys that leave probably didn’t play much, but this year a lot of starters are outta there. We legit might have 30 young men leave the program this year. GA has a lot of work to do to keep his recruits and get a couple more that can contribute.
Hopefully guys get their credits or degrees if they’re finishing up, I’m happy for them and wish them well in their next adventure.
I’m not worried about GA losing any more recruits than normal, and everyone could see that a lot of guys were going to leave so I’d say it’s going as planned.
With the recent players leaving I’m reminded of Richard Mullaney, and how he must have been ahead of the curve, saw the writing on the wall, etc. Good for him, landing in Alabama, contributing significantly, making the most of it, and never trashing OSU the entire time. He didn’t stick around and pout, drag the team down, or get some imaginary injury.
I think Dockery might stay, simply because he finds himself in a Del Rio situation, he’s already transfered once, running out if eligibilty….
Hate to see both Haskins and Brown go, but love watching Nall run the ball. And Lucas too. Keep him at RB!
The rest of them can go, give me some linebackers like Doggett, Seigler (pre-pimp era) Bray, LaRoque.
And some DL like Inoke Breckterfield, the Presidents, or Paea.
Fill in the rest of the spots with athletes like Thompson and Wallace. And anybody else that wants tackle the damn ball carrier!
Mullaney saw three QB’s who were never going to be able to get him the ball.during spring practices and transferred like hell out of there. Good thing he had his degree.
Lucas strikes me as a little too small to be a full time RB. He’s about 170. Quizz was 200 lbs.
I’d use him as a De’Anthony Thomas type though. Looks like he had about 90 rush attempts per year compared to Quizz being up at 250 per year.
I think he’s too dynamic to take off the field, put him at WR when he isn’t playing the lighting to Nall’s thunder in the backfield.
I think we need someone in that mid-size though (think LaMichael James) who can be an every down back. Nall is great but he’s not going to be an outstanding outside run threat, and Lucas will never be a great inside runner. I want a guy who can be a solid threat running inside and outside so the offense is less predictable.
I agree, both are kinda on the extreme ends of a running back. Lucas too small, Nall currently too big. Although he did take one 60 yards, and showed good breakaway speed. When was the last time we had a 60 yard run for a td? Seriously, someone needs to look that up. I don’t think Simonton, Jackson, Bernard, or any others ever did that.
If you use those two correctly, thunder and lightning, it can work. Especially if Nall wears the defense down for 3 quarters. An all around back, someone that meets the two in the middle would be perfect, but they’re probably the third string at USC or already committed.
What ever happened to him? He’s not listed on the roster. Or the kid from Texas that was a hulk, and a real feel good story? Mattison or something like that.
He enrolled Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas last summer because he didn’t academically qualify.
Sounds like he’s working hard to get eligible. Maybe someone else can chime in for when he might be able to get in to OSU because I’m not sure how that works.
On my off days I study hard so I can get this 4.0 I'm close so close ????— Taylor Thomas™ (@Grind_Shine2) November 27, 2015

Ima appreciate that d1 life in take advantage of my opportunity juco taught me that #OSUBOUND ??????— Taylor Thomas™ (@Grind_Shine2) November 27, 2015
Mattison poked his head up about 4 months ago. He’s still a beast, but has bounced around various juco teams and never stuck anywhere. I dont think he’ll ever be eligible again. But damn, what an athlete…..
Thanks nicebeaver. Just curious. One of those guys that seemed like God gave him all the talent in the world, just couldn’t keep his shit together. Knew a few like that in HS and college. Sounds like we put him in the Kuli catagory.
All the DBs can go as far as I’m concerned. I’m not impressed with any of them, especially when it comes to open field tackling, and making a play on the ball when it’s in the air.
Where are you getting your info from (without being specific)? I’m hearing alot about Oline/TE guys on their way out.
I’d like to see Irvine, Moore and Crawford play instead of dismissing them out of hand. And Soesman made steady improvement and some really nice plays in space and against the run. We’ll see if Chappell works up to be LB or a bigger version of the flex in the off-season. And Decoud might make a pretty good FS with Wallace and Thompson incoming. He seemed to be injury prone when he turned and ran back to the edge on run support. Maybe keeping him in CF mitigates the injuries and lets him play all pass all the time.
Jack, you’re spot on. I was implying the guys that got a lot of reps this year.( Hill, Noland-Lewis)
Decoud could be a good FS, and I’m not sure where Chappell fits in. But where do you see Wallace and Thompson at? They seem like two guys that could line up as safeties 9 yards back, and strike fear in anybody coming across the middle with the athleticism to pick off a few passes.
Do you think they could be CBs, as true freshmen, in the Pac12, and be better than Irvine, Moore and others? I’d like to see the incoming guys as safeties, and the redshirt guys as CBs. That’s scary inexperience, but scary awesome talent.
He mentions ST returns as that dual role. I think Wallace has all the physical size, speed and agility necessary to play as a frosh. Like any CB, he’ll be toast every now and then. But that’s how you learn your craft at that position. That’s why you need a truly great rover at FS to help him out.
Thompson looks pretty mature on tape too. So I don’t know if he challenges at CB or gets in the rotation. I’m assuming he’s been told he will get an opportunity to prove himself. And he looks good enough to take advantage of that opportunity on some level.
He signed a LOI, 2 to play 2, so doesn’t that make him a scholarship player? The last roster showed him as 2nd string RG. But never ever heard any mention of him after he joined the team.
Why Jack say “spam”? And also you proclaim to be king of Mr Jack spam?!:Jesus be with you
Gary is decscrete and can turn tides with positive outlooks. Well heeled with regikeous family and for the players. Gary is on right side of god children. Vertical bouncing pattern with gwertifxeri. Same as lesson at youth camps by Gary.
Hey VCS, smoke it, if you got it (and apparently you have a lot)!
It just dawned on me, I’m pretty sure you’re the dude who looks like Jesus who was sitting behind home plate at the Beavs/Quack baseball game last season. Am I right?
I would like to think this is good news, but I’m more it means Chip is coming back to Oregon with Helf taking his old job back as OC. Please no.
Also, time to poach those bastards. Let’s start with that Poly runni NH back and the Texas DB with the brother we offered for 2018 at QB.
I think that the odds of Chip Kelly going back to college are pretty low. If he goes anywhere, it’ll probably be the Titans. Kelly hated recruiting, and he hated working with boosters. I don’t blame him there.
It’s because all he can hear in the headphones the whole game is *chomp* *chomp* *chomp* “Playaction passes muh-muh-make me haaaaaapyyyy” *chomp**chomp**chomp*.
edit: I was just running numbers and comparing recruiting strategies to what we’ve seen, and it occurred to me that our tOSU game will be timed for about our peak timing for expected relevance. I sometimes wonder how Riley’s second stint might have tracked if we could have made some PATs.
I was just wondering if that game is a recruiting tool for GA. New energy, new facilities, new players… play against the best to start your season, then play against the best in the Pac 12. Play now, then prove you can be the best by beating the best.
The date says GA wasn’t a part of the decision. But I highly doubt he’s backing down from it. The point is that 2018, when announced was going to be what? The year after LDR graduates? Another Riley first season QB following a stretch of mediocrity or almost relevance?
The timing now becomes one of talent and time in system for GA’s first youngsters to meet up with the best and make a name for themselves.
I honestly could not care about seven games if one of them is powder puff 1AA. And I see little value in mediocre non-P5. Hell, good non-P5 isn’t of value because the act of beating them means they aren’t good any more, detracting from SOS immediately. But at least that’s better than nothing… and lends to regional superiority if teams like Boise.
Nine conference games should be the norm for all conferences. Alternating four and five home conference game slates should allow for alternating two and three game non-con slates. But like I argue in hoops, the very best need to be scheduled for these non-con games, especially for return dates. We provide value to teams when we visit them in the form of a P5 team who used to go to bowl games. But contracting with us when Riley was here was a guaranteed home win. We were just a second tune-up in the form of a P5.
Now that 2018 game is a king-maker. It’s Oklahoma at Nikegon minus the onside kick call. And it’s set up for us not having a shit-ton of inexperienced players. It’s a moment which could do many different things to the program’s future depending on the outcome.
Assuming Garettson is the starter in 16 and 17, the Beavs are looking a a new QB facing the Buckeyes. Not sure that lines up well unless the defense is on fire by then.
GA stated in an interview awhile back his non conference model is, 1 game against FCS, 1 game against D1 non power 5, 1 game against a P5 team. Doesn’t mean that will happen every year……….
That’s why I was down on him. He looked brutal in that game on ESPN. But he looks very good in this film. I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but that film makes me more excited about him.
Yeah I had just remembered reading some of those comments. I missed the game so I never saw that. He looks good on these highlights and I was almost thinking maybe he looks good because of all the terrible QB play i saw this season! Looking good for the future tho. It’s been awhile since I felt good about a losing season
Wasn’t that televised game the one where he cut his throwing hand, got stitches and went back out and played the rest of the game? I’d give dude a pass on that grass.
I like him. He has a Rivers side-arm release. But he has good touch on the move, hits his timing correctly and throws a pretty fade. And he has patience through traffic. He does have great talent catching the ball for him. But it’s not like he’s missing them. They get great YAC partly because he puts it in the right spot. So it’s good that he already plays with that level receiver and won’t have to adjust once he gets here.
I was impressed by Kolby Taylor here, even more so than the glimpses of Henry and Lucas. The guy runs hard after the catch and has good burst. I hope we can stay in the picture for him next year.
He looks like a legitimate prospect here. Improvement in decision-making will be critical, as it was for Mitchell and MM, but he’s a better runner than both of those guys, so he at least has that going for him.
IMO this is a weak class. They went heavy on Oregon guys with a few WA and CA thrown in. I don’t see a dominant player in this class. Jake Mullholand has the best chance to be great. George Mendazona is an intriguing talent, as are Gambrell and Jones. The rest are fillers, imo. Light recruiting class overall.
I expected it to be heavier on pitching because of all the position players coming in and returning. I think there’s only a couple seniors on the roster. Hitting shouldn’t be an issue next year, pitching will determine how far this team goes.
The team is young and deep. The best players are young too. The infield is set for at least two more years. Of the juniors, none seem likely to leave early. Very high expectations next year.
I like Gambrell, Donovan, Jones, and Mulholland. He got the best players in the state and did well in WA. I like the kids from Cali. But yeah this class doesn’t blow your socks off. I wonder if they missed on some kids. They should be pretty good again this year, maybe they didn’t have the playing time others wanted?
It could also mean that there wasn’t a whole lot to offer in terms of scholarship money. Remember baseball isn’t a head count sport. They have to split up 11.7 scholarship equivalents among 35 guys. Many guys are essentially walk ons.
Crazy huh, but somehow the systems are supposed to have enough money to go from 11.7 scholarship limits to theoretically paying all student-athletes??? Talk about corruption!!
Sonny Dicks has apparently “mentally checked out” of Cal. He isn’t being treated well enough and feels inferior to the tree. I hope they are dumb enough to hire a coach with a totally different style….
I can see that. After all two Texans would leave no room for even a four-eyed vegan in a large hot tub.
Last Picture Show would fail in the first scene because nobody nowadays would expect a Texan to be able to hold a pistol and still have angle enough to hit his privates.
Well, look at it this way, Mizzou sure the hell needs offense, hard to believe, but I think they scored 30 or 40 points LESS than our beloved Beavs for the season. They might appreciate Sonny-Boy a little more than the Berkely gang.
Imposter! I am Bob, you be Bob#2. And who the hell is Boba? I am the original Bob, formerly, very briefly, Rosetta Stone Bob. Now back to being Bob for good.
“… decided not to pay bowl bonuses outlined in the coaches’ contracts.”
Ummm… the AFCA would never allow this. Hell, any court in the country would not allow this unless waivers were signed, again, against the counsel of the AFCA.
That is the stupidest thing any coach would agree to without re-working and re-signing the entire contract.
That’s what I was thinking. You can’t just decide not to pay a bonus outlined in a contract. Maybe the AD is saying that to look like he’s being strict and not rewarding mediocrity. But, if it’s in the contract, he is paying it. Riley getting a bonus for a 5-7 is so typical. In fact, it’s the epitome of his mediocre career.
No… it’s really not… heretofore and notwithstanding… to wit.
There are moral clauses which can be twisted or actually enforced. Examples of that would not be LaVonda Wagner, rather Al Davis doing the one great thing he did in the last 30 years of his life… namely calling Lane Kiffin out for being, well, Lane Kiffin.
Every law is open to interpretation. And they constantly get it, with every court case involving that law. An ex Supreme court justice wrote a book saying congress passes laws, but the court system will tell you what they actually mean, or if they are even constitutional.
All things considered, I’d rather pay Riley out than get involved in a legal hassle. 450k is a tiny pimple on the ass of NU football. At least MR isn’t get another year tacked on to his contract like when he was at that other university. Who came up with that idiotic incentive?
I guess we will see how litigious nice guy Mike will be. Last time he was “told” something by an AD, he turned and ran! Worked out amazingly well for him that time.
He’s getting blocked on some of those plays, and some are swings and misses by OL.
He can read blocking pressure really good and react quickly. He sheds blocks ok. His hand work is good. He is quick for about 5 or so steps then fades. He keeps up pursuit of ball carriers, which is good, but he’s just trying to knock them over instead of tackling them.
Is the tendency to tackle above the waist an indicator of superior strength vs this level of competition? That and the ease with which he gets past the OL makes me wonder about the competition also.
Seems to have decent vision though, reacted to pass(es) and fumble.

Anybody notice zero beavers on the first and second Pac-12 teams? We had a few make honorable mention, but that shows the extreme lack of talent. Even Isaac barely got honorable mention, hopefully he uses that as motivation.
Special teams, fine. But I’d rather throw to a brick wall than to Bolden as a reciever. The guy should be playing defense. So many drops. Just so many.
OSU coach Wayne Tinkle says Morris-Walker, a senior guard, and Schaftenaar, a senior forward, are concerned about scoring and where their shots are coming from.
“What we’re trying to get them to do is defend and rebound and lead, and then the points and shots will come easier,” Tinkle said. “So it’s just a little mental switch to keep their thought process simple.”
Both are starters for a second straight season but taking slightly fewer shots and playing about 75 percent of the minutes they did last season.
“Just to lead and play defense. Mostly just to be vocal,” Morris-Walker said of the coaches’ expectations for him. “Just try to get guys involved and rebound and hopefully the offense comes with it.”
With as poor of a FG % that those two huck up, “getting theirs” should be the last thing they should be thinking about
Can Morris-Walker get his ego out of the way and will he be willing to listen to the coaches and do what they ask of him? I sure hope so because if he can’t he could hurt the team.
Good news, Mason Moran will enroll early. Still hope he redshirts, but it’ll be great to get him into the system as soon as possible. Also, he’ll count for 2015, so this opens up another scholarship in 2016.
I’m starting to think we bring in over 30 in this period.
I don’t think you guys know the rules for signings. Or maybe they’ve changed in the last couple months, and I’m completely ignorant here. We need to make clear what the rules are. As I understand, you can only have 25 signings in one calendar year–JUCO, HS, transfer, walk-on, whatever.
There might be caveats for academic casualties or religious or military service. But they will eventually count in whatever year they sign.
Anyone signed now (for next season) will count toward next year if you are up against that 25 limit.
The limit of 25 only applies between national letter of intent day and April 1st. (Regular signing period.) So guys like Moran can sign now, as long as we have room under the limit of 85, he doesn’t count as a 2016 signee.
Same with JUCO guys as long as the guy full qualifies out of high school, he doesn’t count against the 2016 class, he can sign early and count for 2015. Those guys sign during the mid year JUCO transfer period, which is mid-December to Mid January, I expect we sign a few this year. One I know of who will do this is Timmy Hernandez, he is a full qualifier and will count as a class of 2015 signee.
You’re right, you can only sign 25 initial counters per year…but that only matters during that period between NLI day and April 1st.
By my math for what I know we have right now:
17 high school/JUCO players – these are the initial counters.
2 mission kids – doesn’t count for shit
1 high school early enrollee – counts as 2015
1 full qualifier JUCO early enrollee – counts as 2015
I think we’ll still see a bunch more attrition, more early full qualifier JUCO kids and maybe one or two more high school early enrollees. So that’s how I come up with 30 in this class. It could very well be more.
It’s entirely possible that we already have more fully qualified JUCO kids that I don’t know about.
If we can come to a consensus about the rules regarding class size and how that will impact OSU this offseason, i think that would be some useful information to alot of fans. Could be a topic for a new thread possibly?
It’s being reported he’ll count against this year’s class. Also some juco guys count against the year they started in college not the year they come in. It depends on if they were a qualifier out of high school or not.
I sure hope that kid redshirts cuz it looks to me like he needs another 20 pounds on him.
That story caused me to look at Nemec’s twitter page. All the stories about the ‘ucks signees brought home for me how difficult recruiting is for the OSU coaches this year.
I’ve been getting a bit twitchy because there’s been no good news re the JC players who visited on the UW game weekend. I’m starting to think there’s a good chance none of them will end up in Corvallis.
For what it’s worth, this is an Arizona news story about Moran’s senior season. Sounds like he was being recruited only as an Athlete or as a Safety until OSU gave him a QB offer. Sounds a bit like Seth Collins’ recruiting journey. At least the interviews Moran gave on this video make him sound a little more educated than Collins, so perhaps he won’t be as much of a diva.
I like his highlights and his interviews — he could develop nicely for the Beavs. This is encouraging.
Something a bit weird about his highlights. At about the 35 second mark, I timed him in the 40. He ran a pretty straight line from the opps 40 to the goal line. I did it several times with results ranging from 3.95 to 4.08. Assuming he’s *really* fast and runs a 4.5 in pads in a game, that’s still about a 12% error. Hard to believe there is that much error in the film. So, either I’m not doing something right, making an incorrect assumption, or something is fishy. I’ll assume the first unless I get some other evidence… but I am a bit stumped.
Edit: he does have a running start, but I believe an official 40 time is a running start as well, is that not true?
It’s #’s. Nebraska has 16 Commits with a 3.2 average to our 21 recruits at a 2.8 average. Nebraska has one more 4* then us, and the rest 3 stars. We have 6 2*’s included.
Honestly though IMO, it seems a couple of our high 3’s (Isaac Garcia, Mason Moran) could just as easily be 4*’s with some re-evaluation.
247’s Composite basically has us reversed with Neb. being 31 and OSU being 39.
First off, where’s the Loyola Marymount thread? Angry let’s get it poppin.
I just want to tell you guys that we need to protect Gill for the hoops CW on January 3rd. hole is likely gonna be undefeated and highly ranked by that time, they might try to snatch up a lot of tickets to that one. I trust that you guys will fill it up for that.
All I have to say is that ticket prices are way too high for the product. I agree with what Angry said (shocking), but they should be 10 for the cheaper tix and 20 for good seats MAX. Create the demand, have it so seats are filled up, and then when you are sold out quickly, raise the prices to 15 and 25. No way should they be 20 and 30 when you include online purchasing fees. No reason the average attendance should be lower than 7500.
Sure, for one game, but try being a regular. It needs to be more along the lines of the Corvallis Knights, that way locals can regularly attend and feel like they’re getting good value for their dollar. Most of the people you see at that game tonight are locals.
Willis has a good motor and seems to do a nice job getting off blocks. Excited for his development which seems to be mostly coverage related at this point.
An article about the game said the Beavs took 3 LB’s to the game. Anyone know who the 3 were?
I was Willis and Ortiz. Not sure who the 3rd was.
Ortiz, Willis, Hungalu and Mageo all played. I’m not sure where the 3 LB thing came from.
Same goes on offense, where Seth Collins was converted from quarterback into a guy whose position could best be described on Friday as “playmaker.”…”
http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2015/11/canzano_civil_war_followed_by.html#incart_river_index
A good question is why it took until the final 2 quarters for them to play that way…
I think the good 2nd half against the Ducks was due to McM being more confident and the Ducks defense sucking in general.
1900?
What?
MM>MCM
Now I get it. Derp.
We need more lineman our qb is always on the run! We have no recruits coming in either! What is going on coaches?
GA had a quote about Nall being converted to LB next year……….”not now”……..thank God. I think Nall could develop into an elite back. Great hands also.
Ya he’s all RB now
I’m a bit leery of some of GA’s comments, especially referring to Nall.
Who in the fuck would minus this comment??? You want Nall at LB next year? Make your point!
Probably just somebody who’s just messing with you.
Prolly some douche. Upvoted you back to zero
The column by Canzano says:
The current Beavers assistants stood around near the team bus after the game. There was a lot of frustration and talk about an alarming lack of team speed, especially on defense.
—
To me, that’s been the single biggest sign of decline over the last 8-9 years. We just don’t recruit fast guys like we used to. Dennis Erickson’s defenses were lightning fast and were easily the best we’ve seen in Corvallis. When Banker accidentally blundered into some team speed, they’d look competent and we could actually shut down opposing offenses. I don’t understand why it wasn’t more of a priority.
Speed and depth, you have to have both.
They used to fly to the ball in their all black uniforms, even two or three of Pettibone teams were extremely active on defense under Rocky Long. West Coast LB U has been in free fall the last three or four years. It starts with speed.
Siegler, Doggett. yep
Barnett, even Trent Bray made up for a little lack of speed with intelligence and sure tackling.
What a year! Went from very hopefull to wtf? Then, finally, the last 2 quarters of the last game I actually felt like we had a team.
too little too late, but a look at what the future might hold.
Go Beavs!
I just gave you a thumbs up to balance the idiotic minus someone gave you.. Apparently we have a troll throwing out minuses again! I think minuses are fine if the person has the balls to give their opinion as to why now and then.
Thanks, but negatives don’t bother me. It just shows how immature some folks are when they neg a positive comment or someone’s honest thoughts.
Hell, the worst on this site is having angry all over your ass and I’ve waded through some of that…
The influx of duck faggotry gave you I down vote.
Major influx today of anonymous Duck trolls or Angry hates me and gives me random minuses to keep me in line!
Stop whining about me getting on you, CJ.
But the Internet is serious business.
Not whining, just stating fact.
Another JUCO QB the Beavs appear to have interest in
https://twitter.com/iConn11/status/663748071432413184
Seems like a good bet we’ll see another upper classman at QB next year besides Garretson. Looks like it’s becoming an off-season priority
And another one…
https://twitter.com/tha_truth_104/status/652743215041392640
Is this the 0-star “pro style” QB on rivals who has no offers?
http://sports.yahoo.com/wku/football/recruiting/player-Conner-Cramer-133825
Not sure. Here are his stats from last year. Played for the New Mexico Military Institute, but played against some decent JUCO teams. I’ve confirmed that they are at least talking to him at this point.
http://www.accac.org/sports/fball/2015-16/players/connercramerdq9c
Ok, he’s the same guy from Alabama you linked from rivals. Has several hudl and youtube highlight links from highschool and juco if you want to see his film.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jzevYyIfC7E
The last few commits have been questionable imo. No major offers and low or no star rankings. Where have I seen this before?
I find that my reaction (and based on some of the posts the reaction of others too) is that just because the team made the civil war halfway close things are reasonably good. This probably has something to do with a habit formed by my justifying all the bad teams Riley fielded over the last X years.
Bringing myself back to reality: If the coaching staff doesn’t bring in some serious help @ QB, in the trenches and the D in general, next year could be another really ugly year.
The ability of the coaches to bring in some instant help in the form of JC players is what’s going to determine how well next year goes.
Go coaches!!!
I find it hard to understand how the coaches could not fix his mechanical issues?
my major post-season reflection–Angry vindicated again on his principal points and analysis.
I think he has the potential to be a nice wide receiver also.
You can’t teach a players to throw or go through reads? What do quarterback coaches do in your mind?
I’d say you did ok…
Collins best position isn’t QB and he is still better than MM. Best throws of day were his.
1) Fuck Mike Riley
2) Screw Mike Riley
3) Banker too
4) but not as much as Riley
5) Fuck Bruce Read
That tidbit from Eggers points out a little discussed difference between MR and GA. One of Riley’s failures, IMHO, was his lack of energy and focus in ALL facets of his job; I have been told that GA made sure his staff paid attention to getting Peko eligible and believe that Riley simply didn’t care enough to do that.
There was also a significant average GPA jump by the team since GA came on. I can’t remember the number.
That’s awful.
I thought the never ending on line courses were a way around that?
There’s going to be certain majors that have labs that you can’t miss.
Would you trust anyone who got a science degree online?
Are you saying my masters degree in rocket surgery from University of Phoenix is no good?
Cheaters……
so you’re sayin UO professors aren’t any better than pac-12 referees? Oh the humanity! When you only slap someone on the wrist for being caught dead to rights cheating, you can expect the behavior to continue……………….
Arkansas is giving the lady beavs a game in the 4th quarter
Yeah, but they weathered that storm and ended up winning by 18. Wasn’t the cleanest game by any means though, lots of turnovers at the end of the 3rd quarter. But they close so well.
Five plays you may have forgotten

Not sure if it’s true or if there’s even mutual interest but he’s a former Tennessee recruit with a very impressive offer sheet.
http://sports.yahoo.com/tcu/football/recruiting/player-Riley-Ferguson-117487
Of the players committed right now who do you think can play right away next year?
Damn near all of them could play at some point. I think the list will be shorter if you ask who is going to redshirt.
Well that’s remarkably level-headed and polite.
What are you doing on this site with stuff like that? :)
Lady Beavs move to 5-0.
BWDIK
I think if Isaac stays, there are 8 linemen with playing time on the roster.
Sorry 7 lineman with playing time.
Thanks. I’m used to the Beavs being thin on the lines so your information shouldn’t be a surprise to me but I must admit I do find it a bit chilling/sobering. And I don’t drink. Maybe that’s my problem.
GO COACHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Get out there and recruit your butts off.
here’s a few prospects:
Caleb Smith, Chris Brown, Xavier Hawkins, Hunter Jarmon, Bobby Keenan, Malik Gilmore, Cyril
Good size.
Yes. Our O-line will be substantially better next year. Welcome to college football junior.
Without Peko, jashwa James and grimble, Im afraid our d line will not improve next year…
Peko was a good player – mch better than anticipated.
TIA
And GO COACHES!!!!!!!
JB
Post Season Grades –
Agree with most of that, but if you donated to Riley’s teams you should at least match that donation since Andersen has more upside.
Like that superior talent he had at Utah state?
Relative to the teams in the conference? Yes.
So does OSU have equal or superior talent to other pac12 schools?
so how did GA do it at Wisconsin? Rode the coattails of one awesome coach Bret Bielema?
That’s kind of like saying Erickson rode the coattails of Riley.
BREAKING NEWS: Mark Helfrich accused of heinous crime. Unfortunately for Ducks, he has no defense.
tweet that BeavRecruiting posted is a classic.
If they get in, I hope it’s a repeat of the Alamo bowl loss. Husker fas will bring out the pitchforks and tourches.
I could not tell if it was before or after the Iowa loss, but one bowl projector had NU playing Oregon in the Foster Farm Bowl”. How can you root against two teams playing against each other?
You can laugh as you read a byline that includes the both of them playing in the Foster Farms Bowl.
Ducksters v. Shucksters
should be good
in San Francisco. bow chika bow bow
Banker failing yet again, to stop the spread……for the 8th year in a row. The poltergeist of Oregon follows Riley everywhere he goes. But it won’t happen.
WTF?
Beavs sure could use ’em, especially right now.
I want to believe…..third hand, unverified story on sketchy Internet site.
Wait what happened to that link?
You have some intriguing inside information?
Seth collins wins the Heisman…. no, RanY. posted a story but pulled it. If he wants to bring it up, I’ll talk about it. It’s not about football.
Eh, I pulled the link after giving some thought to how unsubstantiated it ultimately was. I’ll repost if more sources come up, but until then, I’m hoping it’s not true.
OT… GS is good… Lakers suck eggs. That’s about it.
Stanford might give it away right here. Ayup
I take that back. Good game stanford.
David Shaw. WTF? Saving timeouts for next week?
I’ll take, when have we seen Kevin Hogan do this before for $500 Alex,
Suck it Notre Dame
30 seconds and all 3 timeouts. Used all of it but it worked out. Shaw looks like a genius now
Fuck Notre dame in the face.
Yes
Now…we see if Stanford chokes.
Ice runs in that Stanford kicker’s veins.
Why are you hating on Seth?
Why hating? Thanks for asking.
No I didn’t I said it once tool. Classic white boy who never been discriminated against answer. Angry you are a bitch.
Like you know that. Why are you assuming I’m white? Everyone is discriminated against.
And you accused people of hating MM because he was black a month ago. Check yourself.
Just wondering since he had an good game and seemed really good in his new role. We compete when he is on the field.
I don’t follow your logic. Not seeing how Seth’s productive Civil War performance relates to the potential problems in managing ego’s when using a helmet sticker recognition program.
Not much interest in this topic, so I’ll probably move on.
BTW, some internet guru’s say Stanford’s stickers are axe heads.
here’s what we know re: final four playoff
Oklahoma is in. Iowa/Sparty winner is in. Clemson and Alabama are in with wins next weekend. If either of them lose I can’t see 2 loss Stanford jumping a 1 loss Clemson, tOSU or Iowa should they lose to Sparty. Iowa also beat that same Northwestern team handily that beat Tree. USC winning today did not help Tree’s cause. I can see them moving up to 7th on Tuesday but I don’t see them moving into the top 4 no matter what happens next weekend. Just my two worthless pesos.
Clemson Alabama Iowa Oklahoma. That’s my pick Oklahoma wins NC.
Eh, I see it, but that’s a stretch.
This Should be on the duck hidden in beaver logo post.
don’t really care
ASSU/Cal has been a highly entertaining 2nd half
Stanford and Cal both win tonight on game winning field goals as time expired
Has anybody else here heard about the duck hidden within the newer Beaver logo? I know it doesnt look totally obvious, but at the same time, would you put it past a Nike based group of designers to try pulling it was off after the sports bra uniform design? I cropped the logo to hopefully make it stand out. His eyeball is the same as the beaver eyeball and he’s facing left. Also he’s orange.

No.
Looks like Daffy.
Hello thank you.
TdsB.E.A.V.S…
Hey Jack, looks like you have competition for your title of Most Confusing Commenter. Better step it up!
I’m thinking ESL. The guys trying, and you just crushed his soul.
“I will be watching the bowl game very exciting this time of year to see who they could play.”
Tell me what that means, Rosetta Stone Bob
Rosetta Stone Bob… I love it Scotty, it’s my new handle!
It suits you :)

Nice lighting for the interview. Expecting a plea to please pay the ransom so his kidnappers will let Gary see his family again.
Didn’t watch it, but I imagine “big time opportunity”, “those kids”, and “battled like crazy” were said [before Gary got decapitated].
ISIS has better video production than that. I was waiting for OBL to walk into the shot.

What do you think he really wants to say?
“Fuck you, Mike Riley”
Coincidentally also what I want to say
He has lust in his eyes.
Hey everyone wants a chick you can talk sports with as long as her name isn’t Lindsay
That would be an awesome comment if better served. You’ve been saving it, and you wasted it.
What a shitty year of football.

Much not mch, STFU!
Well… that settles it… forever… because it’s so…
Wtf is that as an argument you stupid mother fucker? You non-link a twitter blurb that is to prove what? You make the good fight the bad fight.
But I think you know that.
Edit: Fucking Duck.
Truer words were never written.
October 29: State of the U writes that Alabama OC Lane Kiffin is perfect for Miami, because the Hurricanes need to be jerks again. You know in your heart this is true.
It would be scary if Chipster went to Miami.
All the speed in that area playing for what is essentially a pro team… he would never have to recruit again.
Georgia fired their coach this morning. That recruiting class could implode, and Lockett is busy down there. Doubt anyone would play at OSU over Georgia but maybe given the immediate playing time at OSU and uncertainty at GA.
They have a 5-star QB from Washington…
I believe we have a few left still.
21 commits. 2 are mission kids. At least 2 are full qualifier JUCO kids, who will count for previous classes.
Attrition is going to be huge, I think we take the full 25, plus the JUCO guys and mission guys.
Unless UGA gets someone Patterson, it’s a net loss.
Eason’s first offer was from OSU. but that really means nothing. He’ll have his choice of school, the beavs will not get a sniff. If he went to WSU, he’d throw for 5,000 yards a year.
Why would he go WSU, they have their 5000 yard passer in Falk and hes a sophomore, they’re set as long as he stays healthy.
Cal? There was a rumor that Dykes wants to leave Cal.
There is a good chance that Luke Hollingsworth will transfer. It is a mutual agreement between him and staff. Not saying it will happen, but I’m putting it out there.
Grad transfer?
He played fair amount under Riley. Wonder if the knock on him is speed or something else….
He did?
Wow.
He played in 2 games and had 2 tackles this year. I do remember him playing at michigan, getting blown off the LOS, but, then agian, who didn’t in that game.
Hollingsworth was always very clearly awful to me. This is good news. Good luck to him at a lower level, though.
You’re 99% right
Our WRs would look phenomenal if they played at USC or Cal, trust me.
Most of their play was on the QBs and some of it learning the new system.
Kongbo to Tennessee
Sucks, but at least it’s not the school down the road.

I’m excited for it.
“We know these guys can get this job done: they have before”
Thank you. Been saying that since day 1 and preaching patience. OSU had 52 freshman on the roster and a host of other non Pac caliber players. I’ll admit I drank the kool aid and thought 6 wins was a possibility at first. Fail on my part there
As I eluded to earlier, and am now confirming via family, Luke Hollingsworth is the first defection.
Any idea where he’s headed? Luke always seemed like a good guy. Wish him well wherever he lands
Weber State…Snow College…OSU, small sample size…
Do you really think we’re going to miss much here?
Hello open schollie and someone who can contribute.
It seems we’re pretty set on OL. Opie could never balance positions. Unless a jelly donut I doubt we’ll take an OL this cycle.
Yeah it looks funny when only 12-13 guys are doing bear crawls. You need at least 20 not to look stupid.
Fred Mauigoa is still in play for 2016
I agree in terms of numbers and this immediate cycle; but if they are weak, soft, slow like Riley’s other recruits, or don’t buy in to Andersen et al, then they need to start being replaced too don’t they?
In honor of our default avitars, I give you the amish man with fireproof balls.
http://espn.go.com/endurance/story/_/id/14181141/amish-man-slacks-leroy-stolzfus-felt-no-pain-marathon
Haha.
Time will tell.
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/minnesota-parts-ways-with-offensive-coordinator–qbs-coach-002845384.html
This was about three years too late. Remember how you felt when you heard the news about MR?
It has lifted me out of my post season depression. There is at least hope. The OC was also a very mediocre OL coach. Thank god.
Wow..it looks like the Gophers upgraded from pre-stroke to pre-heart attack. No way that behemoth lasts more than two years. JB
He was slender before the season. It was all stress eating…
Yeah, me too
Maybe we could just play one of their hockey teams for an easy win.
On turf or on ice…..cause it makes a difference.
Thank god.
Well said. Genius planning or dumb luck, no matter. It does look likely it will turn out well.
But, wait a minute, you got something against big heads? Lets wait for Tlingit to weigh in on that.
You’re seriously comparing Superman with SC? Even if you’re talking about demeanor it’s not even close or a realistic comparison.
Points well taken; my point was facile. I was recalling Wynn’s on-field energy, infectious enthusiasm and desire. In my mind, Collins was like that in the cw. Wynn would exemplify ga’s “toughness” and sc has not so far.
Cam Newton is the definition of a**hole. Doesn’t matter to me how he plays.
Sounds like sour grapes. I’m sure some guy in a band that opened for his band is calling him a whiny bitch, too.
Anyway, Courtney Love is batshit, and I just read her mother lives in Corvallis.
how exactly would it be sour grapes when they were all a bunch of nobodies at the time? Agreed on CL
My uncle has played in cover bands around Aberdeen for years. One of his drummers years back was one of the pre Dave Grohl drummers in Nirvana. He quit the band when they started playing out too much because he didn’t want to lose his job a Burger King.
WFO, it sounds like that drummer didn’t respect the process.
But he had found his identity.
I think a junkie took his own life over 20 years ago and I don’t give a shit
Crappy attitude. People should always care about justice and not use a lazy narrative or ad hominem like “junkie” to dismiss the larger underlying issue. You care enough to keep commenting how much you don’t care, which just implies a lot of other crap, too.
well I swear that I dooooon’t have a shotgun……………..
No I doooon’t have a shotgun…………………….
Possible homicide, but not worth investigating. Gotcha.
OT, But Wheaton with a big day at Seattle with Seattle focused on Brown:
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/256-sports/kerry-eggers/283282-159710-markus-wheaton-an-afterthought-steelers-think-again
Maybe they’ll meet up with the Ducks, and we can watch Banker do what he does best.
all over the Eugene rag today was that the Alamo Bowl would certainly pick the ducks.
The Joan Rivers of college football
Are you saying Nebraska football went in for a facelift (Riley hire) and died on the operating table?
Yup
lmao. you got blasted by our worst team in 60+ years. most of our sports programs aren’t very good to begin with. most of the fans were predicting 7-8 wins, while goofers thought they would be in the B1G championship
Caleb Smith made comments the other day about filtering out the players who dont want to be there. It led to some trolling. Entertaining reading if youre totally bored today.
https://twitter.com/itscjsmith/status/670474273539014656
Bevo Phillips is a Hollingsworth connection. The family has major sour grapes right now because of Luke.
Luke wasn’t good. Sometimes you just need to look in the mirror and be truthful with yourself instead of blaming everyone else.
He’s a high school talent scout from pacwest recruiting service according to his facebook. Did Riley use this service in the past? Interesting.
He’s a high-school talent scout? and he’s calling Smith a pothead and a drunk?
Seems just a tad unprofessional if that’s the case, true or not
oh, he’s calling john-boy the drunk. are you johnboy, blackbandits?
He’s making claims that he also scouts for the next level (nfl). Maybe Riley used him in the past? Or he’s an Internet white knight troll, who knows. Who cares, really.
And angry’s right, he wasn’t good enough, now his family is mad, oh well, your kid wasn’t good enough, get over it. Sour grapes is code for ” but we spent his NFL money before he got into the league, what do we do now?”.
No I am not johnboy.
I’m sure if they placed a collect call to Lincoln, Neb someone on the other end of the line would give him a hug…………….
Pass the bong? Well, being a smart alec here, that might explain all the dumb moves on the field, such as jumping off sides.
Potential grad transfer eligible QB. Appears there is at least some interest from OSU.

Towles will be better used in a more conventional, dropback passing offense, Piecoro said.
Why would this staff be interested???

Yeah, doesn’t sound like a good fit at all. Read some of the comments on the article I posted. It sounds like this kid is just Nick Mitchell, in a different uniform. Slow release, inaccurate and lost his job at the end of the season.
Yeah big no thanks.
These guys should have been looking at QBs earlier. Seems like a mad scramble to find someone now.
Totally how it looks. Last call just happened and we’re trying to find somebody to take home and make regretful decisions with.
I’m not see were there is interest from OSU. Were do you guys see it?
hidden deep within the internet……and also here

If there’s interest in and from JUCO QBs, then those relationships had to be developed over the course of the season. Some of those guys only get one season to play and gather film for D1 teams. Then it’s about a month of recruiting if you want to sign in the 2015 class.
JUCO kids are notoriously quiet about recruiting until they commit. It just feels that it’s so sudden because of that.
Ok! Yes.. Fantastic.

Here’s some reading.

Oregon State announces Nick Mitchell, Malik Gilmore and Luke Hollingsworth and Chris Hayes have left the program.
good riddance
I’m so sorry you are a failure in life! Those 4 kids in they’re short time on earth have already passed you by. Jackass
I don’t know if Mitchell ever released a pass THAT quickly…
So I was going to post this earlier, but now 4 of the players I intended to list have indeed left the program (Mitchell, Gilmore, Hollingsworth, and Hayes). Here are the other candidates for being let go, at least in my mind:
Brandon Arnold, So. DB
Chris Brown, Jr. RB
Devin Chappell, RJr. DB
Rahmel Dockery, Jr. WR
Damien Haskins, So. RB
Bobby Keenan, RJr. OL
Robert Olson, RFr. OL
Caleb Saulo, Jr. LB
Justin Strong, So. DB
Noke Tago, Jr. DL
Bright Ugwoegbu, RFr. LB
Thoughts?
Strong and Haskins seem like good bets to stay. Strong will likely enter camp as a starter and Haskins is a guy who screams of needing more carriers. To your point he could either be frustrated with that or the staff could explain their plan for him which would hopefully keep him on board..
Those are the only two I would fret over losing since Guyton is already gone.
Football isn’t the problem with Strong, he was concussed severely and never passed the concussion protocol. I think he’s a medical retirement candidate.
That really sucks about Strong.
I hoped Tago could recover and contribute. Hope he sticks and does so.
The other questions are 1) How many schollies will be freed up?; and 2) How well/quickly can this staff fill those holes with Pac12 level recruits?
I am wondering about Rahmel Dockery. I don’t recall much of him at all this season.
His value seemed to be as a returner only and we’re bringing in better talent. I bet he’s gone.
Seemed like lots of people were high on ugwoebu and his speed. Seemed like good kid to me.
Are you related to him?
That’s all good news.
Cool.
Well if you want to talk about those issues in private shoot me an email (contact page on the right). Many people write in private and can vouch I don’t share anything. It would be interesting to hear details about how Riley and Andersen are different from a player’s perspective, and also to get deeper inside the culture and hear what is going on. If and when you want to vent or just inform me…
Thank you . And I will be talking to you soon!
And an MBA, man that’s a load for a student athlete.
yep.
Take the bowl practices to do it.”
http://www.omaha.com/huskers/mckewon-play-calls-passing-erratic-to-the-end-for-huskers/article_e5eec34a-a7fd-5037-8f76-acd0fcd8e50c.html
BTW, this is how NU squeaks in:
“Without enough 6-6 teams to fill the 80 bowl spots, the NCAA announced Monday that teams with a 5-7 record would be selected to fill the remaining spots based on the highest Academic Progress Rate.
That means that Nebraska, with an APR of 985 over the previous four years, would be No. 1 on the list of teams with five wins.”
“That’s a neat deal, thanks Bo!”
Gee, that’s swell!
…wait, I DON’T get another year on my contract at Nebraska for making a bowl? And I still have to stand slackjawed on the sideline – er, I mean work extra to prepare for the bowl game? Shucks, that’s not a neat deal…
Prediction: Riley goes for 2 for the win, doesn’t convert.
what stood out to me in that article was another maxim from the Angrybeavs playbook on Riley:
neither the best linemen nor running backs are seeing the field.
Was Chris Hayes a walk-on or on scholarship?
I went back and looked, he definitely arrived as a walk-on. I’m not sure if Riley ever game him a scholarship, but I believe he didn’t.
Vs. asu 2014: Ward 66yrds, Woods 78yards.
Thanks. Just used to a long run being 20 to 25 yards before being run out of bounds or caught from behind
Riley’s miracle game of 2014.
I think you just described Taylor Thomas
What ever happened to him? He’s not listed on the roster. Or the kid from Texas that was a hulk, and a real feel good story? Mattison or something like that.
He enrolled Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas last summer because he didn’t academically qualify.
Sounds like he’s working hard to get eligible. Maybe someone else can chime in for when he might be able to get in to OSU because I’m not sure how that works.
Thanks buddy, maybe he joins us in the turn around in the next year or two. Still curious about Mattison too.
Mattison poked his head up about 4 months ago. He’s still a beast, but has bounced around various juco teams and never stuck anywhere. I dont think he’ll ever be eligible again. But damn, what an athlete…..
https://twitter.com/LawrenceMattiso/status/630661632939589633
Thanks nicebeaver. Just curious. One of those guys that seemed like God gave him all the talent in the world, just couldn’t keep his shit together. Knew a few like that in HS and college. Sounds like we put him in the Kuli catagory.
I like how he says “on my days off I study so hard”, so he’s admitting to studying about 20% of the time? That explains a lot.
More impressive is that he’s chasing a 4.0. That means he’s studying efficiently.

Crap that didn’t work
Caleb Smith is a locker room cancer and really needs to go.
Looks like another defection is looming….a DB. Will wait and see if it’s confirmed.
Seems like he has bought in with his recent tweets, now weather he is good enough to play is a different matter. What makes you say he’s a cancer?
And looking at Wallace’ highlights, I’m thinking GA might try him at RB, just for shits and giggles.
Or maybe some dual role with most of his time on D…I think there’s plenty of RBs…this D needs serious help.
Barrels of false starts aside, I’ve seen nothing that says he’s a locker room cancer. What’s your source?
That would be the butt, Bob.
I’d like to see Fred L. leave.
Yup. 100% Riley project. But what about Sosaia Tauaho? JC guy that GA signed. Massive dude, limited time to play, zero impact this year.
I am pretty sure Tauaho is a walkon.

Chip ain’t coming back to Oregon.
Nebraska fans……will see this as the OTJ training for their next HC.
Disruption of anything with Nikegon is good for us, yes?
They’ve coined a new synonym for stupidity.
Sam McKewon says Danny Langsdorf’s contradictory impulses* led to some strange play-calling against Iowa
It’s because all he can hear in the headphones the whole game is *chomp* *chomp* *chomp* “Playaction passes muh-muh-make me haaaaaapyyyy” *chomp**chomp**chomp*.
Haha
Interesting. All our frosh will be juniors and seniors.

edit: I was just running numbers and comparing recruiting strategies to what we’ve seen, and it occurred to me that our tOSU game will be timed for about our peak timing for expected relevance. I sometimes wonder how Riley’s second stint might have tracked if we could have made some PATs.
I appreciate the buckeyes for smacking the quacks, but they still gotta go down
I was just wondering if that game is a recruiting tool for GA. New energy, new facilities, new players… play against the best to start your season, then play against the best in the Pac 12. Play now, then prove you can be the best by beating the best.
I believe this was announced when MR was still here.
I doubt GA would go out of his way to get 59-0 part dos.
The payday game to pay off CR?
The date says GA wasn’t a part of the decision. But I highly doubt he’s backing down from it. The point is that 2018, when announced was going to be what? The year after LDR graduates? Another Riley first season QB following a stretch of mediocrity or almost relevance?
The timing now becomes one of talent and time in system for GA’s first youngsters to meet up with the best and make a name for themselves.
Yes, Ohio State is the Craig Robinson Memorial Payday Game. Michigan was for Lavonda Wagner I believe. Thanks football!
Do you think Serna would have been the kicker he became w/o missing the 3 PATs?
Yes.
Probably better.
Tough to improve on winning the Lou G award.
Win it twice…
… like Ryan Allen won the Ray Guy twice… possibly why he ended up on the lowly team he did.
He certainly wouldn’t have had to pay for new tires and windows for his car.
Did our Power Five athletic director also stick to a “bare minimum of seven home games”?
No QB that isn’t more than spectacular will last a whole season. It’s a gimmick offense that requires superman to remain static from day one.
GA stated in an interview awhile back his non conference model is, 1 game against FCS, 1 game against D1 non power 5, 1 game against a P5 team. Doesn’t mean that will happen every year……….

Mason Moran’s senior year highlights for whoever is interested
Why are people not excited about this guy again?
I think he had one bad game against strong competition earlier this year. His good stats were against lesser opponents.
That’s why I was down on him. He looked brutal in that game on ESPN. But he looks very good in this film. I guess we’ll have to wait and see, but that film makes me more excited about him.
I think GA said the plan was for Moran to redshirt next season and Moran is on board with it
Yeah I had just remembered reading some of those comments.
Because he’s somebody else?
Edit: My response doesn’t make a whole lot of sense because I missed the “not” in the question. So, in the words of Emily Litella: “nevermind.”
@ Hi_I’m_Chuckie: Excellent question. I for one look forward to seeing him perform as an Oregon State Beaver.
Redshirt plus 1 or 2 years on the bench and he’ll be in the running for the starting job. Don’t expect him to come in and play right away.
Fortunately, we should be setup next season where we won’t have to ask a true freshman to start at QB. Will be a nice change from this season!
He looks way better in this film than the last set. Looks good actually
He looks like a legitimate prospect here. Improvement in decision-making will be critical, as it was for Mitchell and MM, but he’s a better runner than both of those guys, so he at least has that going for him.
I’m not sure if this was posted, but a bio of the baseball recruits:
http://www.osubeavers.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30800&ATCLID=210507304
Guys we’ve offered who are currently committed there:

Damn he’s just getting it turned around?
Bay Area hot-tubbers are hard to stomach for any Texan
There are already plenty of Dykes in Berkley. What’s one less?
So the headlines like “Dykes licks Beavers” are going to be “Dykes battle through early Crimson Tide offensive flood”?
South Carolina…..Cocks top Dykes!
Biles and the gang are going bowling, but the “AD Nazi” says……No Bonus For You!
http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/story/5-7-teams-could-get-bowl-bid-based-on-apr-scores-if-grades-good-enough-nebraska-missouri-kansas-state-113015
“… decided not to pay bowl bonuses outlined in the coaches’ contracts.”
Their AD is a lawyer, so every contract (or law) is open to “interpretation.”
I don’t think it would even be up to him. The AFCA would hammer this immediately. They wouldn’t get much sympathy. But they would be right.
Classy.

Good God, is this guy being serious or sarcastic about being a Manziel and Beiber fanantic?
Nice, two Seinfeld references in one blog thread!
Fucking Union Jack is hung backward!!! Fucking disrespectful display of the flag… and technically a violation of law.
Other than that… who is this Douchy (-ie?) McSteroid I am now asked to read about?
Livin the dream..WR at The University of Nebraska #87 Bieber & Manziel fanatic
Definitely prefers balls across the chin
That guy is going to have a hard life if he can’t handle that level of criticism.
Chew gum real hard, it’s a great stress reliever.
He’s offended by someone criticizing Nebraska football and doesn’t realize Nebraska football is offending to watch.

Buster’s son?
That would be awesome! Catch balls and sing, too.
But wait, his last name would be Johansen if that’s correct.
The offspring of a New York Doll playing tackle football? Personality Crisis, indeed!
I don’t see any contradiction.
Is he Hot Hot Hot?

I thought I said inside the 20, but inside the 10 is even better. Sub QB_xyz for Mitchell, who got exposed shortly after that post.

What do you all think of the guy in the twitter feed, Howard Houston?

Film looks good, but it doesn’t look like the OL is blocking him on many of these plays…makes me wonder about the competition.
“Is the tendency to tackle above the waist an indicator of superior strength vs this level of competition?”
It means you like giving people hugs.
Ummm…….not that there’s anything wrong with that. Right?
No, there is nothing wrong with being affectionate.

http://www.scout.com/college/missouri/story/1548639-dl-could-land-at-mizzou-for-2015
Anybody notice zero beavers on the first and second Pac-12 teams? We had a few make honorable mention, but that shows the extreme lack of talent. Even Isaac barely got honorable mention, hopefully he uses that as motivation.
Went back to 2005, we’ve never been skunked before. Couple years with one or two on the second team, but never zero. And that includes special teams.
The list is pretty bogus anyway.
See: Bolden winning honorable mention over Villamin. Really?
WR or ST?
ST for Bolden
That’s fair. He did have aggregate numbers worthy of honorable mention.
I thought Villy had receiving numbers worthy of third team, if not HM. Do I have his stats wrong?
With as poor of a FG % that those two huck up, “getting theirs” should be the last thing they should be thinking about
http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/basketball/osu-men-s-basketball-beavers-looking-for-more-from-morris/article_03e5e927-d047-59c5-945e-0c59fd28fecd.html
Can Morris-Walker get his ego out of the way and will he be willing to listen to the coaches and do what they ask of him? I sure hope so because if he can’t he could hurt the team.
The only thing Olaf should be looking for is an open chair next to his buddies on the bench
He’d ignore it and leave it open.
Or miss the chair when he tries to sit down.
For the locals: Have they started the demo for the VFC project?
Is that supposed to be completed for the start of next season?
Never mind. Just looked at the Reser cam.
I was gonna say… they have a cam set up for it.
http://webcam.oregonstate.edu/reser/
Good news, Mason Moran will enroll early. Still hope he redshirts, but it’ll be great to get him into the system as soon as possible. Also, he’ll count for 2015, so this opens up another scholarship in 2016.
I’m starting to think we bring in over 30 in this period.
http://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/index.ssf/2015/12/mason_moran_oregon_state_beave_1.html#incart_story_package
Never mind, Cake nailed it.
Good luck coaches.
He is skinny. Good news to get him in early and see what we have.
Agreed, he looks lean. Needs to hit the weights.
This is encouraging.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrg6TfAiBJQ
Oh what the hell… a little schadenfreude isn’t bad.
https://twitter.com/SpiritOfDevaney/status/672134371952979969
LOL. Time to drag out the hard to recruit to card.
Is there an airport in Lincoln?
Yup. Regional jets only.
Somebody send that to Lindsay “the buffet” Schnell. I’d love to hear her bullshit excuse.
OT: Saban and Harbough lose their DC’s to Georgia and Maryland as new HC’s.
Is this based on # of recruits OSU can take verses Nebraska or is it truly star power?
Plus, the ratings are so subjective, there really isn’t any difference between being #31 and being #40.
Oh, that will change when Riley “poaches” back some of his recruits that are leaving OSU…2017 baby!
And remember, just down the road from NU is their rich, in-state rival so it’s hard to recruit to Lincoln….
Can’t compete with that powerhouse Creighton football program and the incredible metropolis of Omaha. They have an airport.
Yep, to damn expensive, same as football.
I bought two chair back seats for tonight’s for $18 each. Seems reasonable to me.
Sure, for one game, but try being a regular. It needs to be more along the lines of the Corvallis Knights, that way locals can regularly attend and feel like they’re getting good value for their dollar. Most of the people you see at that game tonight are locals.
If you can’t win an award, make one up, and give it to yourself! Go Minnesota Lawn Ruiners!

Wow, didn’t realize Willis finished third in tackles in relatively limited playing time:
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2015/12/oregon_state_beavers_2015_supe.html#3
Willis has a good motor and seems to do a nice job getting off blocks. Excited for his development which seems to be mostly coverage related at this point.
Sounds like Dino Babers from Bowling Green will be a leading candidate to replace Dykes, fwiw
