Should be an interesting atmosphere tonight to say the least. I’m sure there will be a lot of taunting and such that the Beavs will have to block out and overcome. This series is going to test their fortitude more than any other in their lives. I don’t have a great feeling about it, but since they have had good leadership and focus all year maybe they can overcome this, block out the noise, and immerse themselves in the game rather than the outside drama. Vandy’s dugout is going to be brutal to listen to…have to block that out, be mental titans, and let their play do the talking.
Go Beavs.
I’ll be watching from a bar with the sound off.
I don’t see them winning. Hope I am wrong but I’d bet everything on Vandy to advance if I had no emotional involvement.
Why would you bet everything on Vandy?
I mean, I will take the other side of that if you actually want to do it. Unless “everything” is a ’84 Chevette.
I think I made it clear why I won’t make said bet. I don’t bet when emotion is involved. I just think this coming out on the eve of such a big series makes it very unlikely the Beavs win the series. I think they were 67% to win on Wednesday, now I’d say that is more like 33% so I’d bet on them losing if I were to make such a bet.
They were an easy car to work on. The diesel was bizarre, the engine was made by Subaru. Too heavy for the car. Sounded like a semi-truck when it started.
Is it a diesel Chevette? 0-60 in five days!
Lol dad had one of those. Loved it!
I know, my Mom had one also. It was still running when she donated it in around 2006
Mine too!
My dad was a Ford mechanic, yet somehow we had 5 Chevettes in the driveway at all times. So bizarre. We didn’t even have 5 drivers in the family at that time. He’d rotate them like expiring soup cans. My friends would bust my chops about what color Chevette would be in the driveway next week, etc. It was pretty funny and weird.
I had a regular Chevette and my Mom had the diesel
I didn’t know they made diesel Chevettes.
Automatic with regular gas…omg, we lived on top of a mountain, and you’d literally max out around 15mph with the RPM meter going haywire. It was a hilarious car.
I need to ask my dad why he had so many and rotated them. I feel like it’s because they came through his shop and he couldn’t pass up the deal each time, but they sucked so bad it’s hard to understand.
On of my buddies at school had one. A tin can with wheels. He would tell chicks in the bar he drove a Vette LOL.
Hopefully the fans and the Vandy players have enough class not to shout out inappropriate things. Depending on what they say and to whom they say it, we may see some fights tonight/this weekend.
I remember Vandy fans from 2011, and they had no class. It stands out in my mind how obnoxious they were back then…
their annoyance is amplified by their accent. Listened to a post game conference and had to turn it off because of that. Vandy is a good school but they sure do sound stupid.
I had to return my tickets for this weekend’s games (stupid wife surgery) and now it bums me even more missing whatever may unfold tonight. I love being at events that have weird undercurrents like this shit show is promising to have. TV will not do the atmosphere justice, especially when the fans are first arriving, standing in line, talking, carrying signs, wearing home made t-shirts, fighting, etc.
Hope she is OK. Say hi and wish her well.
Just knee surgery, nothing important. She’ll be back to grabbing me a beer from the fridge in no time.
Make sure she doesn’t forget the chips.
What does the smart wife say about all this?
Hopefully, what kind of sandwich would you like….
If the Vanderbilt coach allows his players to taunt with regard to the Heimlich situation he must be an awful person. Taunting re: the game – probably – but I don’t get point of taunting anyway – celebrate when the game is won.
I think the Beaver players have the class to be tough in this situation. Might even make them stronger. Their lives are still so very young and yet – they might not confront anything this major for a very long time.
I would be surprised if Vanderbilt’s dugout gets brutal with Heimlich. I hope and expect that Vanderbilt’s head coach — Tim Corbin — has too much class and too much respect for Pat Casey to allow such misbehavior. Corbin led Vanderbilt to a national championship in 2014 and to 2d place in 2015. He has turned Vanderbilt into one of the premier programs in college baseball. I don’t think Coach Corbin and his program are going to take the low road here. See: http://www.columbiadailyherald.com/sports/20170608/vandy-sets-sights-against-no-1-oregon-state & http://www.vucommodores.com/sports/m-basebl/mtt/tim_corbin_276720.html
That’s probably true, but there is always the blockhead who says something out of the corner of his mouth from the corner of the dugout. And he can’t control the Vandy fans, who were awful in 2011.
I agree that the Vandy fans (like many or perhaps most SEC fans) are probably going to behave badly. Would not be surprised to see a fight in the stands if (or when) Vandy fans cross the line re Luke’s off-the-field issues.
They say something about OSU, OSU fan says something insensitive about the guy who dies last year and then there’s a fight. I imagine it’ll happen.
One could retreive the standard meme of Nashville and incest if fans get obnoxious. That should play well.
I attended Friday’s game (awesome). Our tickets ended up being in section 3, row 1 almost surrounded by Vandy fans. We sat next to Coach Corbin’s wife – a really nice person. The Vandy fans – maybe around 100 – were fine. No issues that I heard. No “chatter”. It could be that they were significantly outnumbered. Could be that OSU caught fire on offense and took the air out of the fans. And I didn’t hear anything from my seat directed at the Vandy fans from OSU fans.
Scouting report re Vanderbilt for tonight’s game:
Starting pitcher for Vanderbilt will probably be Patrick Raby. He’s a right-hander who throws strikes. Fastball in the low 90s. He’s known to be a competitor, mentally strong, with a consistent delivery. He won’t overpower the Beavers, but he’ll make the Beavers beat him. http://www.tennessean.com/story/sports/college/vanderbilt/2017/06/08/vanderbilt-patrick-raby-super-regional-oregon-state/378653001/
Most talented position player is junior center fielder Jeren Kendall, a left-handed hitter who is considered one of the top outfield prospects in the upcoming MLB draft: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2017/3/6/14814248/jeren-kendall-of-vanderbilt-2017-mlb-draft-report
Hottest hitter is Will Toffey, a left-handed hitting infielder who received the Most Outstanding Player award in the Clemson regional that Vanderbilt won last week. Toffey hit .473 in the regional (9 for 19) with three homers and twelve RBIs. He’s been in the zone for the past month or so, and is at the moment Vanderbilt’s most dangerous hitter. http://www.goupstate.com/sports/20170606/toffey-pulls-vandy-through-with-two-homers
Looks like Luke Heimlich is going to start tonight’s game: http://cni.pmgnews.com/pt/12-sports/362684-242860-heimlich-likely-beavers-starter-in-game-1
Leaving aside off-the-field issues, and just focusing on the baseball aspect, seems to me that Luke Heimlich is a good choice to start tonight. As noted in prior posts, Vanderbilt’s hottest hitter (Will Toffey) is a left-handed batter. So is Vanderbilt’s most talented position player, Jeren Kendall. Luke is tough on left-handed batters, and would seem to have the best chance of minimizing the damage done by Toffey and Kendall.
Keeping Toffey and Kendall in check is probably going to be key to winning tonight’s opening game of the super-regional. It’s always important, of course, to win the opening game of a three-game series, such as a super-regional. But it’s perhaps more important than usual this time around. Tomorrow’s match-up is probably going to be Jake Thompson against Kyle Wright — a power pitcher with major-league stuff — and the Beavers don’t want to be going into that match-up down a game and facing elimination.
But, again, none of this takes into account the off-the-field issues that have recently arisen and are now getting national press coverage. How those issues play out tonight — who knows?
Starting Heimlich is good. Go with your best pitcher and let the chips fall where they may.
What a crazy turn of events. Actually still really excited to watch this series and hope the Beavs pull it out, no matter who pitchs which days
Agreed. Pat Casey emphasizes and demands mental toughness, focus, and discipline. All things considered, tonight will be a major test of OSU’s ability to practice what Pat Casey preaches. I expect the Beavers will rise to the occasion. We’ll see soon enough….
Thompson starting
https://twitter.com/The_Real_Bob/status/873276541014220800
Well that changed fast.
Disagree with the move for sure, unless Heimlich is so perturbed he can’t pitch.
This is the type of game I’ve been waiting to see JT in all year. #1 starter vs a very good team. If he succeeds I’ll admit I was wrong about him.
Heimlich pitched on Saturday would be going on short rest, but something he has done this year. Thompson on regular rest.
I actually like this idea. And if we win I would personally go with mulhommad or fehmel. It would be a perfect weekend to get two and not have heimlichs recent article distract the team. Than let the coachs decide how to move forward for the cws. But at least the news would be settled and it can sink in and everyone have a clear rational thought process on how to proceed
Yeah.
That’s gonna happen.
Mulhommad? I didn’t think he could pitch during Ramadan.
Very good, Black Bandit.
Just found this on ESPN (written in past tense, perhaps in haste….):
http://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/19580598/oregon-state-beavers-pitcher-luke-heimlich-identified-registered-sex-offender
“Oregon State opens super regional play against Vanderbilt on Friday, needing just to win the best-of-3 series at home to advance to the College World Series.
Beavers coach Pat Casey could not comment on the case. On Friday, Heimlich did not start against Vanderbilt; Jake Thompson took to the mound against the Commodores.”
Did we win?
:)
Luke pitched and we won 15-6
Too soon…
Even guys named mammothboner6969 have standards.
Slightly clever, completely tasteless.
Last week, I watched Will Toffey hit two long home runs against Clemson to win the deciding game of the regional. http://www.scnow.com/sports/article_cf5897a6-4a6b-11e7-bdf1-fbe829ad9a3b.html
Scary — in my view — to contemplate Jake Thompson pitching to a hot Will Toffey tonight in the opening game of the super regional. That matchup — I suspect — may determine to tonight’s game, one way or the other….
I’m liking the weather right now.
I had an excellent hot will toffey at a New York restaurant last year.
Can we keep the Luke stuff to the other thread? There is an entire thread dedicated to it. This is about the game tonight.
I’m going to go ahead and move all posts related to Luke to the other thread. If more pop up here I will have to lock it until game time. Sometimes when I move posts, subsequent posts become out of order. So watch for that.
Good idea. Go Beavs..
Looks like the rain is ending, if it hasn’t already. It might start back up around 10:00
Luke asked to not pitch tonight. Thompson is starting.
https://twitter.com/DannyJMoran/status/873312134469255169/photo/1
Looks like its for the Super Regionals, but for now, leaves it open to return at some point. I think it is the right thing to do.
I don’t know how he would be in a proper mental state to pitch, anyway. He probably isn’t.
OT (but not Luke):
Donut shop owners and proprietors of late night bakeries now in meltdown mode; Schnell tweets, “I’m part of the latest layoffs at @SINow.”
No way she’d return to that airportless burg of Corvallis, right?
My schadenfreude is going haywire right now!
Is that German for erection?
I’d be surprised they let her go, if I wasn’t surprised
* wasn’t not surprised
scotty derp, long week
Go Beavs!
three up three down for Mr. Thompson to start the game just what you need
Fucking CSF/LBSU game needs to end so I can watch
If Thompson gets another win (jinx, I know) he’ll have the honor of being the worst 14-0 pitcher in angrybeavs history :-p
With all due respect…………..shut your pie hole!
lol
No, if he wins he gets upgraded from serviceable #3 to a good pitcher. There’s a lot at stake!
What’s with the Freddy Mercury mustaches?
Is this their top pitcher?
No, he’s pitching game 2.
Ok, thanks.
Harrison with a three run shoot nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KJ 3 RUN DINGER
Rutschmen hits into a double play to end the bottom of the 1st what a great start for the Beavers
Does anyone have a stream link to the game?
http://www.strikeout.me/football/17387/1/espnu
We need more female presence around here. You ladies are so nice. Invite your friends, BG! ;)
Raby at 28 pitches along with several throws to 1st. Certainly plenty of stress.
Jake OTOH: 6 pitches got him out of the first.
Rain looks fairly heavy. Anyone at the game? How is it?
3-2
Jake melting down. Figures.
Not really, Donahue is to blame for one of those runs.
No.
Now you have the right to call Thompson meltdown, but that missed catch / run was on Donahue (Announcers think so too ;) ).
bad Thompson comes back give up a walk a double and a single to make it 3-2 with one out
That last frozen rope wasn’t on Donahue unfortunately for JT
Thompson throwing BP out there…
there goes all that excitement as we are now tied
Thompson shows his true colors. Dude stinks.
Good thing some people thought the real ace wouldn’t be good for our team tonight….ugh. My gosh Jake.
So much for that lead.
Oregon State 3, Oregonian/Vandy 3
We’d probably be shutting them out right now but for Canzano and Co.
Thompson gets out of it with “only” 3 runs…leaves runners on 2nd and 3rd.
This is the Thompson I know very well. Need Luke tomorrow.
At this point, we need Thompson to just give a QS with 6 innings, 3 runs.
Luke Heimlich now trending on FB. Just what we need.
Wouldn’t worry about it. The trending is personal to you and is based off your search history and habits.
Gotcha.
Hard to tell from a stream video of Casey – but I swear he looks 20 years older.
Kwan beats out the throw what a paly two on 1st and 2nd two outs
Heads up slide by Kwan………KWAN!!!
5-3 beavs huge hit
Apparently Vandy threw their Jake Thompson tonight. ;)
Madrigal is just.. magical hits a double to score two 3-5 Beavers
On one play, we see Mighty Kwan look to be 100% over the quad injury AND Nick looking like he can do more than bunt! Good stuff!
Nick is back
Donahue a defensive liability? He about misplayed that one also..
Yup. WTF?
Great pitch by Jake for out #3.
Raby at 66 through 3. From what has been reported, Vandy has little confidence in their pen. Since they are offensively minded, wonder if they’ll leave Raby in for 100+ even if the Beavs come up with a couple more runs.
I hope they leave Raby in. He stinks.
It seems back to baseball at this point, which is a great thing.
Donahue was safe on the stolen base. Bad lazy call by the ref. Would have led to a good chance for a run. Weird it falls outside of what is reviewable.
Casey up. He has to be dreading this.
nice and short the way Casey always is
Interviews with both coaches were short/useless. Why even bother?
What’s with all these Vandy players sporting porn staches?
“team building” excercise?
Thompson looking decent. If he can get a QS of 6In /3run I’d be happy. Anything more is icing on the cake.
What is with all the porn staches? #22 looks like he is about 35.
Haha,….you beat me.
Haha. Buncha fuddy duddy 1890s porn dudes. These dudes wear suspenders under their unies and think the railroad is innovative technology.
I dislike Vanderbilt…old “fuddy duddy” money. The porn staches almost seem to symbolize that era and mentality. Buncha dandies.
They sing this song before every games.

Beavs 6-3
Maybe I’m nuts, but I was never worried about the offense despite any stats or slumps. This came up in a past thread, and I said the pitching, yeah, but offense will be fine.
Definitely more worried about pitching. Beavs have hitters who will chip away and get things done. Many guys under performing, and I strongly believe in the law of averages (I got a 100 in Stats in college — not one question wrong the entire quarter).
Larnach poised to get thrown out at third.
it is what he does….. that is our Larbach
I don’t pay to much attain to other teams players names but was the Vandy start the number on pick guy?
No, raby is a decent prospect but Kyle Wright is the top prospect.
thanks
I don’t understand the Adley Rusthman love. He is a horrible hitter. They’re talking about him as a high mlb pick. Really? Maybe if you have the same scouts as Brien Taylor or Tyler Glassnow. Amazing how many MLB scouts can’t…scout.
He’s a good reciever and over the last 15-20 games he’s hitting .300+.
Every time I watch a Beav game he’s hitting way too high in the lineup and making auto outs where the at-bat isn’t even competitive. He also has a bad swing, technically speaking… low hand position with slow, looping, and just awkward swing. If he’s hitting .300 recently it’s due to raw power not technique or approach.
True freshman
But a terrible swing…
Do they have plans to reconstruct his approach.swing in the off-season? Without that, he is going nowhere.
I would assume, we’ll see where it goes in a couple years and reassess.
Alright. I mean I am open to being wrong or the guy changing, but that is an atrocious swing as-is.
Well, Thompson gave the QS. 6 inning, 3 runs, 4.50 era. It’s fine for this setting. I’d let him go out for the 7th and if anyone gets on base remove him.
Did I just hear the telecaster correctly? He called the Vandy starter’s outing underrated…dude has a 9+ ERA.
hey, they have to sell the network you know
Disney stock just soared.
And there it is — Toffey takes Thompson over the wall. OSU fortunate that no one on base. Get Jake Thompson out of there, please…….
Didn’t like the punchout to end the inning?
Sure, loved the punchout. Nervous about seeing Jake out here again for the 8th…..
So Jake should be done for the night. Not too bad for him.
He lost the quality start, and has a 5.14 ERA. “Not too bad”?
I didn’t see. But Parker and Wilson sounded like a dropped fly which wouldn’t have been a third out led to 3 runs. Not too bad if that play gets made.
Yup. Donahue screwed up and cost us a couple runs. Jake stepped up and pitched a nice game.
I’m not a true baseball guy. So yeah I knew you would say something. :) Who comes out of the pen for us?
This new arm for VU should give up another 2 runs tonight. Something like a BA against of .280 and frequent BB’s. I like our chances to get to him, notwithstanding his 1-2-3 seventh.
Um, maybe not.
Um…..maybe so. You must remember to FEAR THE ORANGE BAT!
the bats need to wake up…
Wow, they are letting Jake pitch the 8th? This can’t go well, can it????????????????
Damn…
save the pen I guess?
#TLN?
The luck of JT continues. Dude must have visited the crossroads this off-season.
Take him out!
Ok
I think Nate heard you.
I type pretty loud.
Jake’s new ERA for the season: 1.52
2 down, nobody on vs an offensive team. 4 outs to go.
Jake had a good night. Angry now on the #44 bandwagon.
4.66 ERA. Meh. I have higher standards.
Consider some circumstances. Better team, more pressure, Luke Heimlich story yesterday. I give him a pass for getting the job done (decently).
He was fine but didn’t convert me.
Beavs got this.
I haven’t heard the fat lady sing.
Schnell is still at Voodoo Donuts, but is on her way.
Beavs got this in large part to that wart covered Casey making this about “us versus the world”. Did you listen to his pregame interview? Easy to read between the lines and realize that he had this team focused and believing that all they needed was each other.
A courtesy shout out to the Beavs fans, but Casy’s thrust was about playing for each other and the team no matter what anyone outside the team felt.
More impressive than Jake, by far, is the offense…just came fully focused and ready to go. Seem to have blocked out all the noise. Good signs. Looks like I might win a Chevette.
As said above, that focus came directly from Casey.
Beautiful at-bat by Grenier. Saw ten pitches, made Snider pay for the first good one to hit.
Mighty Kwan!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EnsUeR2MyI
Madrigal struggling.
2 more runs. End this Mulholland/Eisert!
Correct, 2 more runs.
As called for at the time of the pitching change.
Nick over swings and strikes out.
Ass pucker time. Come on Jake.
Bring out Thompson!
Max please!
Just thinking more about Adley…he can’t hit a lick, but I’m hoping he can take his leadership skills as a C (good framer/receiver/leader) and translate that to the football team.
I believe Adley will go down as among the top 3 catchers for the Beavs when his career is over. His hitting will improve, he already has great strike zone discipline. Watch him handle the pitchers, many of whom are more veteran than he; he approaches each one as an individual – – you can see him approach them differently after each half inning.
The kid has a history of being an all-around athlete. He already does a good job re: baserunners. I do think he’ll demonstrate his leadership skills on the FB team, even if his role doesn’t change from last season, but his brightest future is baseball.
I already think he’s the best I’ve seen. He’s like a young Scioscia without the emotion… the post-broken-arm Scioscia with a better arm.
You wanna talk about Ps having career years with Ws and ERAs?
There was one constant.
Nolan Ryan won an ERA title with an 8-16 record or something close to that.
Beavs win 8-4.
Gimme that Chevette!
Nice job Beavers!
Great to get the win without Luke pitching (saw him in the dugout supporting his team). It shows how strong and deep this team really is.
I say throw Luke tomorrow and go to the CWS.
Interestingly, Vandy’s pitcher tomorrow is only 5-5 yet he is going to be the #1 pick in the draft. For all those people who think stats like 14-0 for Thompson matter at all to people who understand the game…
Thompson was fine tonight so don’t want to get too into that.
I know baseball enough to know 14-0 means he’s won a lot of games for the Beavers
… and has been fine all season!
He has great stuff, but has had some meltdowns. Hitters must make him work and throw a lot of pitches.
How do you interpret the ticker that was running the whole freakin’ game? Is it just a one game leave for Luke? That’s not how I read it, but who knows.
Yes, I feel he will pitch.
We’ll see.
Someone mentioned that he was in the dugout. If he was a true distraction to the team, I would think that he wouldn’t even be at the ballpark. You may be right regarding him pitching tomorrow. I kind of though it meant he was done for the season.
I thought Luke’s statement was clearly not for any specified length of time. He was in the dugout as a show of support for his teammates, he was off the field in an effort to avoid drawing attention to himself and his situation. That’s just the way I see it.
Not sure how I feel about him pitching game two.
Drew for 70-85 pitches? The “book” on him should be of little value to VU, right? Committee for the last 3 innings or so?
How many runs ya think will be needed for the win tomorrow? Will 6 do the job?
Why the hell is Mike Parker talking about more than the game. He seems to think he’s a great philosopher. SHUT UP!!!!!
Because he’s an annoying big fish in a small pond.
So glad the team beat Vanderbilt. Can’t stand them. They’re the SEC of the SEC (in baseball anyway)
(please beat them again tomorrow!)
Rasmussen tomorrow?
Scotland Church!
Hell, uh, heaven yeah!
I’m afraid I have to expel a rather ferocious hairball. You’re on your own, girl.
Good win. As I’ve said, hitting is what will get the beavs to the cws. Drew will get the ball tomorrow. I’m feeling like Luke would start Sunday if needed.
Statement from Luke was as expected, a lawyered up apology.
I get the feeling that the admin is waiting to see what happens before determining if they should take further action against Luke. Story does not seemed to have gained much traction outside of Oregon.
How much hitting you think will be needed for a W tomorrow?
VU is gonna come in with a lot of confidence because of the arm they’ll start; Beavs need a hot start to offset that and get VU hitters pressing.
Frankly, what are they supposed to do with him here? If I’m not mistaken, everything was handled according to policy. That’s what I got from the university statement, anyway. If so, anything extra is CYA cowering to PR pressure and re-punishing a student for something he did as a minor, horrible as it was.
Discussions on the policy itself are a separate issue. I’m sure there are heated feelings on all sides.
Had this issue surfaced when Luke was a recruit, there’s no way he plays baseball at OSU. No fan, donor or coach would have supported him then so it shouldn’t be different now.
For the type of crime he’s guilty of, he’ll always be paying for it. To me, deservedly so.
“Had this issue surfaced when Luke was a recruit, there’s no way he plays baseball at OSU.”
Possibly, but I wouldn’t bet the farm on that.
I don’t know about always for how old he was when he committed said crime. But I do think this isn’t a time to be thinking about him. If he’s with the team, he’s a distraction. If he’s not with the team, maybe he knows a little about what it means for something bigger than him taking away something very important.
I don’t begrudge him the alternate truths he had to tell to get to this point. I imagine my teenage self would have made up some story about getting caught nekkid with my girlfriend who was more than two years my younger, and her mom just had to press charges.
Sounds plausible.
It almost worked. He was masterful this year. He was by far the MVP of the college baseball season. He was also the best player in the country. So he has all that.
But he can’t be a good teammate and still be a part of this team. Stepping out now says more to future teammates than does being selfish. And future teammates give you juice.
It’s on d1baseball, washington post, new york post, espn.com, and a lot of regional news papers on the east coast and midwest. It’s gotten out, but it hasn’t quite been whipped into a fever yet. I would imagine if he pitches this weekend it will turn into a shit show of epic proportions. Maybe not Pedo State level but shitty none the less
Was on the Washington Post website last night, front page link on espn.com, haven’t looked further.
From Casey’s postgame:
Casey said either Bryce Fehmel or Drew Rasmussen, who would be pitching on short rest, will get the nod for OSU.
And
“I thought we played with energy,” said coach Pat Casey, … “I thought we played with that type of togetherness that we talk about all the time.”
If Bryce pitches more than spot relief, I fear we get shelled. Beavs need to be super patient at the plate and work up the pitch count.
KOIN TV in Portland just announced that Luke will not pitch tomorrow and it’s unclear whether he will pitch in the CWS if the Beavers make it that far. So that’s settled.
Donahues error did not get scored as an error, but we all know it was. JT was very solid tonight and that error cost him atleast 2 runs.
#Mc3rdstring #hospitalballs #caseyhaswarts #angryisaninternetbaseballchamp #dallasbuckwasundertheradar #angrysadouche
Sorry… what error?
The one Casey was pissed off about.
There was no error, just a dumb play on the ball.
He made no play on the ball which is why it wasn’t an error… but it was a routine play that should’ve been made. You probably notice Cary was put out for defense in the ninth and Donahue sat
Hmmm… so what error?
Anyone else Wondered if Luke has any suicide thoughts? I imagine a majority of his teammates – some with smaller siblings – look at him very differently now. Also. If his sense of self is based on being a baseball pitcher (which is effectively over, at least soon) his confidence could be shot. Then there’s the public shame, even if he doesn’t pitch again. I wonder how he’ll hold up.
Yes that thought did cross my mind.
Just don’t get what the benefit was to the victim by the Oregonian putting this story out there. Could have been handled in a more responsible manner.
Yes, I was wondering about that, too.
To get a deeper understanding of Luke’s situation and what is likely going through Luke’s mind at the moment, I read an article earlier this morning that I highly recommend:
http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/03/14/when-kids-are-accused-of-sex-crimes
The article is long and disturbing. But after reading the article one certainly has a deeper understanding of the difficult issues involved (and, yes, there is more than one side to consider here, notwithstanding the superficial drivel being spewed by Canzano and his ilk).
I really doubt his baseball career is over. I’m sure where he’ll be picked is a lot different than it was last week, but somebody will take him.
It appears Casey and Bails, both pretty solidly religious men support Luke. Multiple shots of Luke last night showed what appeared as teammates being supportive to him, not treating him any differently. I know Angry will take this as me supporting Luke and not the victim, and that’s not the case. But the victims Mom claims she doesn’t follow OSU baseball, yet reaches out to the paper right before the biggest game of his career. She also threatened his parents that they’d never see this “relative” again.
His career as a baseball player isn’t over. Someone will take a flyer on him in the late rounds of the draft. He will be in the minor leagues in a month.
I think he falls out of the draft with reports saying numerous teams have taken him off their draft board. Maybe the Mets take him and pair him with Tebow.
40 rounds/32 teams/1280 players taken. He will get picked.
30 teams, 1200 players….Still.
That was an impressive showing last night against a super talented team. Beavs have been so mentally tough all year, but that had to be a hard shock to deal with. Anybody else almost crap their pants on the strikeout pitch by Tweedt? Hanging curve in the center of the plate.
Gretler, if not for Nick, could be team MVP. He has been so clutch this year. Seems to get a big hit when we need it. Plays a great third base and when KJ gets hurt, slides seamlessly to first and plays great there. Backup catcher to boot. He will be a big loss off of this squad. Should be an interesting pro prospect. Hope his little bro is as good.
“Anybody else almost crap their pants on the strikeout pitch by Tweedt? Hanging curve in the center of the plate.”
Yup — same reaction here. Surprised — and relieved — that Tweedt got away with that pitch to that hitter at that point in the game.
Yes…”almost.” Let’s go with that…hehe. Err…
Maybe he sticks around one more year to play with his brother if he doesn’t get drafted high.
Most guys will go pro if drafted in the first 10 rounds. If gretler falls out of the top 10, there’s very little money there.
A few interesting tidbits from a D1baseball.com article on last night’s game:
https://d1baseball.com/featured/sorenson-wrapping-supers/
“Oddly, before game time, Heimlich was seen long-tossing in the outfield during warm-ups and was part of the team introductions for both squads. Take this however you want but he was given a hearty applause when his name and number were called out by the P.A.”
Interesting that Heimlich was long-tossing in the outfield before the game. Doesn’t sound like a guy who has given up on pitching again for OSU this season.
And the quotes from Pat Casey don’t sound like Casey has shut the door on Heimlich pitching in the super-regional, much less the CWS.
I didn’t like the casual “Heimlich had trouble with the law last week”. Do your job and give the details. It was a citation and the citation was dismissed. It’s that kind of half-assed reporting that creates the impression that Luke has committed a crime recently. And why was it “weird” that he was playing long toss? He hasn’t been suspended from the team.
If Erin Andrews was Luke and she had a citation dismissed and had to then deal with all the fallout you can bet she would sue for 150 million and win 200 million. Such is the level of nonsense capable within our society. Personally I think Luke ahould be allowed to live his life and would argue it serves societies best interests. Oregon State being a part of turning a tragedy into a gradual but steady redemption is something I believe is worth fighting for.
It’s funny you mention lawsuits because as I was reading the D1 Baseball article, I was thinking Luke’s attorney should be on the watch. There’s a lot of bullshit flying around.
Game 2 preview
Vandy is going with their #1 starter Wright. You have to wonder, did Vandy get too cute by saving him for a must win game?
Beavs will need to hit again to win this game. Odds go heavily into their favor if they can knock out Wright. Will need to get his pitch count up early and score first.
Expecting Drew to take the mound. He’ll need to work fast and attack hitters. Give Wright little time between innings to rest. Eisert is likely the first out of the pen.
I think today’s game will be similar to last night, both teams play worse than their yearly stat lines show. Both pitching staffs falter a little more than usual.
Wright has been their day 2 starter for quite a while it sounds like. I thin the only way they’d have changed their routine is to face Luke in game 1.
Does anyone know why Wright has only started 10 games?
He’s started 15 according to d1baseball. If you’re seeing 10 starts somewhere, maybe just in conference? Or their #3 pitcher has made 10 starts?
https://d1baseball.com/team/vandy/2017/stats/
Last night during they game they showed Wright as being 5-5, also Angry mentioned it above. Maybe he saw the same thing I did…
Not every start results in a W/L.
~Captain Obvious
Per Vandy’s site, he’s started 15 games
Pure speculation, but Wright has probably a number of games that were undecided when he left the mound. Given the record, his relief probably failed him, has a high number of losses to be a #1.
has a high number of losses to be a #1.
Stats tell incomplete stories. See Kershaw’s 2010 and 2012 seasons, or Steve Carlton’s entire career.
Ws depend on the pen in the modern game, and ERA depends a lot on your defense/range factor (and some luck), and pen (if you leave with guys on). There are so many examples of this that it’s amazing people keep relying on stats. e.g. Keith Pankey was once our 3rd and then 1st leading tackler. Lol. Ray Lewis made like 180 tackles, all 15 yards downfield. Lol
I’ve never seen Wright pitch, but my guess is he has a great build, dominating stuff, and mentality that projects well to mlb. We’ll see tonight.
Some stats to look at,
Batting avg against – .210
WHIP – just over 1
he doesn’t hurt himself is what the stats say.
Beavers have a way of making pitchers work a lot harder to get outs than they are used to and then they start making mistakes. Get a couple 8-9 pitch at-bats, and i wouldn’t be surprised to see their pitcher start to lose their edge.
If he’s so dominant, how did he lose five games? His teammates decide to play like crap when he pitches?
OMG! See Kershaws 2012 season. He went 14-9/2.53 and finished 2nd in Cy Young. How do great pitchers lose games? Really? They’re on awful teams or teams who are good yet give no run support, have bad D, etc. I can’t believe how little people on such an intellectual site know about baseball and how it works.
5-5 ain’t 14-9. You’d expect Wright’s pitching record to be better than the team’s win-loss record, or at least close, but it’s not. Who cares if Wright can deal a masterpiece pitch sometimes. Winning is most important, and for whatever reason, he’s not spectacular at it.
My mistake. He’s 5-6 now.
If the Beavs could do to Wright what Cal State Fullerton has done to Long Beach’s pitcher who had a 1.32 ERA going into today’s game, that’d be swell.
(CS Fullerton leading 9-0 with 11 hits after 3)
Found this on Keith Law’s Twitter: Senior Dave Smith of @LBDirtbags started 6/2 (98 pitch CB), 6/5 (51 pitches), and today (75 pitches, 9 runs allowed in 3 innings so far) https://t.co/AfTyF7rHN7
Don’t think Wright is in the same boat.
A much different context between the two, absolutely. I just meant that it’d be nice if the Beavs hitting could take it to Wright like CS Fullerton was to Smith.
Ahhh, gotcha.
Don’t think we’ll get many runs on him but if we can grind out ABs and get his pitch count up, we can do damage against their pen. Hopefully our P can keep us in the game.
We know Luke won’t pitch tonight. Is it already determined he won’t pitch Sunday and/or in the CWS? And if so was it his decision? Or is that still to be determined by him or whoever else?
Based on the interviews with Casey I’ve seen and reading between the lines, it seems that Casey is willing to pitch Luke whenever (if ever) Luke decides he no longer is taking a leave of absence. Which speaking of that, when I read Luke’s statement I assumed he wasn’t going to be present in the dugout or at Goss at all, since he said he didn’t want to be a “distraction”. It didn’t seem like the other players were distracted by him last night.
Thanks……that makes sense. I was thinking the same thing when I saw him in there as well.
My take is that the admin told Casey not to play him and he is pissed about it. Per Eggers..
It’s fair to say Oregon State’s administrators had a part in Heimlich’s decision to sit. There was pressure, subtle and otherwise, on Casey and the coaching staff, and also on the university not to allow Heimlich to play. Heimlich was surely aware of that, too.
Casey — who feels Heimlich paid his debt to society and should be allowed to move on with his life — met with his players before Friday’s game to discuss the situation. During Friday’s radio pregame show, Casey told broadcaster Mike Parker, “The support (the OSU players) are going to get from me is right now the only support they’re getting, other than from our fans, and that’s great. I’m happy with that.”
No, Casey isn’t happy about it. Neither are the Beaver players, caught in a difficult situation on an issue that transcends sports. In a postgame press conference, I asked second baseman Nick Madrigal if there was any extra emotion involved given the circumstances with Heimlich.
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/362743-241999-together-beavers-pull-out-a-win-over-vanderbilt-in-ncaa-super-regional
Thanks for the link. Those comments by Casey to Parker were what I alluded to earlier in saying that Casey had this team focused, together, and seeing an “us vs the world” situation.
What does everyone think of Casey’s whole-hearted support of Luke in the postgame? He could have easily dodged or given a vanilla answer. He didn’t. (I notice some reports left off the “on AND off the field” portion of Casey’s remarks about Luke being a fine young man as long as he has been on campus).
Casey has put himself on the line here with the kind of support players appreciate and to which they respond. Is that support misplaced in this situation?
Also in Eggers piece was confirmation of Drew’s “day-to-day” availability due to that line drive he took on his pitching arm.
You can’t be a leading university in the fight against sex crimes and have a person convicted of a sex crime representing your university, no matter the circumstances.
I think your take is spot on. It’s about perception at this point and OSU doesn’t appear to have much of a policy on any registered sex offenders attending school, so I’m sure they would like Heimlich to just go away. I was actually surprised he was introduced and in the dugout yesterday. It may have been a subtle fuck you from Casey to the administration.
OT-
I’m at Gill watching my step son play basketball tournaments and Tinkle is walking around the floor high fiving the kids that are sitting on the benches. Pretty cool.
How sweaty are his pits?
You beat me to it.
I’m trying to imagine a guy that’s 6’8″ “high fiving” kids that are sitting on the bench. Perhaps an underhanded high five,,,, would that be called a low five or low fiving? :-)
Go Beavs!
Speaking of basketball – since currently there’s nothing else to talk about……. :-)
Anyone have any thoughts about the forward(s) (is it two?) and 1 center (Kylor Kelley) that are going to be joining the team?
I see Eubanks and Thompson Jr are still listed on the roster so is it for sure that they’re going to be back?
Thanks
“I see Eubanks and Thompson Jr are still listed on the roster so is it for sure that they’re going to be back?”
Both pulled their draft declarations. I would assume they will be back.
Per OLive a few weeks ago, Drew withdrew his name from the draft and is returning to school. Thompson did so a few weeks before him.
About the new kid, not sure what to think. Makes me wonder why more schools didn’t offer him? Can’t teach height though.
High for the kids. Not so high for coach.
Tres was score keeping too apparently.
Luke will get drafted. I’d be very surprised if he drops below the 3rd round. Some teams won’t care about this at all, especially as time passes.
Probably, but can you imagine the shit he will hear in some of the minor league dumps.
The dudes who go to those games are basically Luke incarnated. If anything he will be their new idol.
LOL. A good contrary take on the situation. He should bring back his mullet for good measure.
Cubs pulled him off their list, other teams may follow suit. I imagine some teams just don’t want the potential negative press. But some teams are going to be willing to weather that storm for a guy who can help them win championships.
Cubs have a ton of prospects and can afford to do so.
Fullerton thrashed the Dirtbags 12 -0.
“Dirtbags”
Worst. name. ever.?
Anteaters?
naw, dirtbags is worse. Although “Portland Pickles” may qualify.
Bugeaters…….prior to being the Cornhuskers.
Woh. WTF is a bug eater. A redneck who eats bugs because he can’t afford corn? I don’t get it at all.
We can’t talk, Beavers is pretty bad. I remember as a kid watching a show (think it was 60 minutes) when they talked about embarrassing sports names, and Beavers were on it, and they had this cute/portly girl talking about the double entente. She gave me a boner. I kind of love girls who are 20lbs overweight yet have beautiful faces and dress well. Weird fetish. I prefer normal/thin girls, but I definitely find those well put together slightly plump types sexy, especially when they’re talking about “beavers” all coyly.
WTF…..indeed!
;)
I love the name!
Are you a dirtbag?
I can see loving it if you’re a dirtbag. J/k, buddy. Actually, it’s pretty funny. It just sounds so jarring to hear during a broadcast. I think I hate that more than the name itself.
Just reminds me of old time baseball…like rough and tough ball players that you’d expect to have to fight at some point.
Banana Slugs
Bryce gets the start. Many here will cringe.
Wasn’t there talk that he ran into problems only after teams had seen a good sample of his work? Can he manage 4-5 quality innings before VU catches on? We’ll soon see, TLN must be on his toes tonight.
Also, C-boy gets the start again.
Have a sinking feeling fennel is about to get his world rock… hope im wrong
Yeah. Hope the pen gets going early. Ugh.
Anybody watching davidson v. aTm? Poor Davidson in complete collapse mode after leading 6-2 top of the 8.
Given every solid bullpen pitcher 2 innings, keep Fehmel in reserve to eat innings if the Beavs get to far behind. Make sure Rasmussen is ready for tomorrow if needed.
Yep, I’m watching it. Texas A&M fans chant the name of the opposing team’s pitchers. I don’t that us really fair since you’ve never encounter ever before in your life.
Don’t think that is really fair…
Is the start delayed? I am watching the OSU link on ESPN and it’s Davidson…
NM it’s on now.
Fehmel starts the inning shaky, but finishes with a couple strikeouts. Scoreless.
We’re connecting on pitches. Should we expect a breakthru at some point?
Vandy pitcher is legit
I love starting Fehmel tonight. Bounce back mode after pitching poorly earlier this season.
Fantastic play in left.
C-boy says, “How do ya like me now?”
Great play in left. Another K. What about the rain though… Sunny at my house right now.
Mighty Fucking Kwan!
Kwan!!
Yes, FEAR THE ORANGE BAT!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EnsUeR2MyI
Beavs 1-0
KJ AGAIN
Fuck yeah
KJ YES!!
What did I say about not worrying about offense? ;)
4-0 Beavs!
Can that idiot ESPN analyst pull his head out of Kyle Wright’s ass now?. Wright is getting shelled and even the previous inning, his stuff did not look overwhelming.
Yeah I don’t see a #1 pick here.
The announcer goes to Wrights room after each game.
And molests him, with his mammoth boner?
Bingo.
And when are these ESPN guys going to realize the Beavs are the #1 team in the nation, you don’t go 53-4 by accident. I don’t give a shit who’s pitching against them. To get that record, you’ve had success against a bunch of great arms.
The game is on ESPN so Vandy is all-world no matter what.
I thought for sure Larnach was going to attempt to get thrown out at 3rd.
Too bad Gretler chased that one.
I’m not sure what that pitch is, but the Beavs strikeouts have been on pitches out of the zone. A touch more discipline and this could really be hell for ESPN’s SEC love child.
Fehmel is so hittable that this is far from over.
Yeah, I would not say a win is in the bag, I was just tired of the fawning over Wright when he’s obviously struggling.
Agree, but so far so good.
That’s for sure, but somehow they just keep collecting outs
That Pat Casey interview where he says we should be proud of a child molester is really odd. Wish they’d stop showing it. Wish he never said that. So weird.
It was an awkward forced segment. The announcer sounded like he didn’t want to do it.
I don’t know to me he is trying to show that he has been a good person while at OSU and that he has left his past behind him….right or wrong way to look at would. It not be bad form to throw his own player under the bus? Still crappie all around
Then say, “I don’t know about all that, but he’s been good here.”
The end. Proud of him? Family should be proud of him? Awkward given the facts.
I think it just came out wrong in context. I believe he means everyone should be proud of who he has become now (a supposed model citizen since).
Question: “If genders don’t play sports, athletes do.” Why are there separate women’s sports?
Genderless sports coming to a PAC-12 near you.
I can’t wait for the tranny olympics. Chicks with dicks and dudes with boobs.
it is happening now in some high schools I’ve heard
because do you really want to see a over 6 footer posteriz a lady
Thank you for helping me understand why I’ve always found that commercial so annoying.
“Sports isn’t about gender! We don’t need a commercial for that! ….Now excuse me while we make a commercial all about gender.”
Wright is at 70 pitches through 4.0.
As was the case last night, I doubt pitch count will be the reason he is pulled, it’ll take another rally by the Beavs.
As for Fehmel, VU has now seen him, the longer he is in the more likely that they get to him. TLN must earn his pay tonight.
EDIT: 1-2-3 fourth for Fehmel, he is at only 45 pitches.
Kwan almost became a legend.
MIGHTY KWAN almost became more of a legend. fify
Wonder how much Vandy was geared up for Luke and have been thrown off by these two other starters. Doubt they scouted Fehmel as much. Nobody has mentioned it yet, but they seem really off, and I wonder if that’s part of the reason why.
Haha, these announcers blowing Tim Corbin.
Just say, “Go to Vandy because ESPN owns the SEC” and be done with it.
Okay I had enough, had to mute them.
Moved over to Parker?………..AND Wilson?
No, just the mute button. Picture is fine, but these two need muzzles.
KJ fucked up and cost us a run.
Time to take out Fehmel.
Time for Luke to man up and get in this game.
Fehmel is throwing junk. Amazing he’s made it this far.
Time to go to the pen.
“ends the inning but Vanderbilt has the lead 4-2.”
Wishful slip of the tongue by SECSPN
These fucking guys…
Caught that too, what a tool
It’s time to warm up the pen if they haven’t started already…
Really need to extend this next inning and make the Vandy pitcher throw a lot of pitches.
Or not…
Gotta make Wright work,
This umpire’s zone though
The legend lives! Mighty Kwan makes Wright work with a two out single.
Not a lip reader, but pretty sure Wright just let fly an F bomb.
Sure did lol
Yes, he did.
By the way, just in case any of you didn’t hear. Every Vandy player will be drafted.
And have shrines waiting in Cooperstown.
And they’ll all be the #1 pick.
Best coach in the NCAA as well
Larnch with a 2 RBI single 7-2 Beavers
CWS here we come. Eat it, Canzano.
Put that on twitter, he needs to catch some shit. After the last out of course.
So who comes in to pitch?
Eisert
Haha, ESPN announcer feels Kyle Wright deserves to be the #1 pick even more after getting shelled for a 9+ ERA tonight….
I’m reminded of that vandy fan site/blog that was posted earlier, hope that guy’s enjoying the game
Oh yeah, that shithead with his Oregon St. hasn’t seen SEC baseball this year.
He obviously hadn’t actually seen the beavos
I’m liking this SEC baseball so far. No nailbiters.
Nine outs to go. Please don’t make this dramatic.
3 more LOB
What’s the total?
true so true
7-2 and the last portion of the VU lineup due. Bryce at 57 pitches, how far do ya let him go??
We are off to Omaha (barring no fuck up)! Take that committee and fuck you Meggs.
Fehmel again.
The ESPN announcers mouths must taste like shit after sucking Kyle Write’s ass for the last 2 hours.
6 2/3 7 ER.
Lol. He said again Kyle Wright has been “very good” hahaha….9+ ERA and a blowout.
Well if you take away the 3rd and 7th innings, Angry….
If just would have hit powerball I would be a multi millionaire
If I didn’t go 0-9000 I would have been a HOFer.
I was mocking the commentator, just in case it wasn’t clear.
Six outs……
Speaks volumes to the fact we didn’t even pitch our two best pitchers this series…
this is from a Fan site talking about the series
Third, I’m not convinced OSU is the consensus top team, and am certainly not convinced they would be favored in a three game series against, for example, LSU, Louisville, or even Florida.
When we play this Friday, we will be the toughest team they have faced all year. I cannot with 100% certainty say the same is true vice versa.
Are they a great team? Of course they are. Are they unbeatable? No
http://www.anchorofgold.com/2017/6/6/15745784/super-regional-preview-better-know-the-beavers
I wonder if they are eating their words now
What Vandy fans don’t realize is when you’re #1 everyone wants to beat you that much more. The Beavs are showing their mental toughness that comes with that ranking this weekend for all Vandy fans to see.
Not that it was needed for motivation, but I wonder how many Beavs were aware of those words.
Oh wow, I almost want to signup there so I can post something. What a twat.
Until now I’ve been thinking leave the starter in…… But now I’m wondering if it might be wise to bring in the bull pen so they can get some work too.
Just mentioned that to the wife.
Vandy catcher has a great arm.
How many more times do you need to test that guy??
What’s with these horrible base stealing decisions?
It’s comical at this point. But, seriously fool me once shame on you, fool me twice… well you’re never going to fool me again. Or nevermind… fuck it keep doing it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=KjmjqlOPd6A
maybe they don’t want to show them up?
Casey has a hot date after the game so he’s trying to end it asap.
Vandy catcher has THE arm
Stupid. Two outs on failed steals.
Too bad there’s no mercy rule.
But there is a “no mercy” rule. More beaver runs please
Mercy is for the weak. We do not train to be merciful here.
Chill out, guys. Want a mercy rule because this is taking a while and I want to go do something else.
PC better let Max E pitch the ninth. He has earned it.
HTF did the play by play guy get a TV gig?
Slept his way to the top.
With the lights out?
Lights on but no eye contact
How would you know if he was looking at you or someone behind you?
LOL
Three outs to go.
3 outs…
“I’m ready to go crazy…I’m ready to paaarty” hahah
Anyone hear that dude?
Haha yeah that was hilarious
One more out.
Ooma……haa!
Hopefully no one got hurt in the pile.
Mighty Kwan makes the catch and the Beavs Win!
Fehmel with a surprising masterpiece. Player of the game/series with that effort. He got better as the game went. Throwing junk for the first few innings but the breaking ball got sharper and pinpoint accuracy as it went on. Just over 100 pitches. Great pitching.
Looked like the Fehmel from last year. We’ll need it next weekend.
Frankly, it is good it was done without any “taint.”
Take that.
So much for the mighty SEC and “best team we’ve faced this year” (lol blog post)
Holy Cross was tougher. Hell, Utah was tougher.
I’m not really a fan of the pre-CWS dogpile, but that’s my one complaint about tonight.
^^^^^^this
Seriously, looked like Adley landed on Fehmel’s shoulder. So dumb.
Bah…Why?
Basketball teams cut down the net on the way to the Final 4
MLB teams celebrate winning their league pennant
NFL teams celebrate winning their conference and advancing the Super Bowl
Its a sport, its suppose to be fun, they absolutely should celebrate and college baseball celebrations mean dog piles.
Two reasons:
1. Act according to the situation. Dogpiles are for when it’s all over, and you won.
2. Andy Peterson
Fehmel showed great moxy. Could have fallen apart in several spots there, but kept hammering. Great outing and great confidence headed to FUCKING OMAHA!!!!
^builder
Hell yeah omaha baby!
YES!!!!! OMAHA Le’s Go!!!
Retro Benny Flag is 5-0.
Riley better not show up at these games. Don’t need his mediocrity infecting the team!
OH GOD NO
I hadn’t thought about it, but Riley showing up is definitely happening. Better prepare a few anti-mediocrity hexes.
If I go I’m wearing my “no more mr. nice guy t shirt”
Thanks for ruining a nice moment, AB!
PS- I wouldn’t mind seeing Smilin’ Mike show up in his four layers of outerwear to protect against the brutal June cold in Nebraska. That might be good for a laugh or two.
Vandy blog generally being good sports and rolling with the jabs about their post. I hate them slightly less now ;)
That’s good, but those fans were such dicks in 2011.
Good to hear. Some of there pre series comments were not so nice. One comment said they would sweep us. Guess not.
I read one tonight…”do they have the slowest infield in college baseball?” A real genius.
Danny, you might want to find another team to write about…oh — and take Canzano with you.
Please don’t stymie great investigative journalism, the last time we heard from young Danny he was breathlessly trying to find out what Heimlich’s high school athletic director knew and when five years ago. And get ready for Canzano’s next editorial about how it’s a disgrace that Luke’s in the dugout and how he should have been exiled to Siberia by now.
Yeah, you’re probably right.
They’re trying to make money, and you don’t like that.
You can’t hate capitalism in spurts. Accept that there is a market for this type of news, and choose not to acknowledge it.
Or just accept that it is what it is, and it takes time to digest stuff like this.
I don’t think Luke is evil or anything. I think differently about him now than I did three days ago. But I have no complete thoughts on the situation.
And I imagine there are teammates in the same situation. An adult needs time to digest serious ideas. This might fall in that category. Luke is a part of the team. As far as I’m concerned, this team is .667 without him, at best. He has been a leader, a stalwart, a rock.
But he’s also not been him.
He’s not paying for his crime again. There were consequences for that, and he did and will take care of those. But there are also consequences for being something other than he is, faults and all. And this one is going to take the grown-ups a couple months to work out.
It’s not cut-n-dry. It is complicated. Being honest up front lends you more credibility. It also doesn’t allow others to write your story… or a story similar to yours but wrong. It allows you to tell your own story and to be proper about each step in that process.
The O was wrong in their process. The original story?
Fine… a lot lacking n answers… but fine.
Anything beyond that?
WTF? Are you a news organization? Or are you some slap and tickle artists? Recording the facts is one thing. John Canzano has shown that he learned nothing from his very good coverage of the Brenda Tracy story.
I think she probably fed him all the good lines.
It’s not black and white. It’s not hate. It’s not even disappointment, although there is some of that.
It’s sadness. I’m sad.
I know Luke is trying to make amends. But total honesty is the first step in that process. And he didn’t trust us enough to do that.
That makes me sad.
It’s going to take me a couple weeks or months to process this as an adult. I won’t watch any game he plays in… except maybe a final out situation like Max got last week. He deserves to be a part of the team forever. But we just have to find a way to win without him.
This team is amazing. I think they can win falling down. But I hope they understand how sad we all are.
Then again, I think more than a couple of them have shed a tear or two over the last couple days.
“But I have no complete thoughts on the situation.” Then you prattle on forever.
But in fairness, Jack “prattled on” with some thoughtful comments. The ultimate resolution (it seems to me) of this whole mess can probably come only when both Luke and the victim, as two adults, can sit down together and reach whatever degree of closure they can. And they certainly don’t need the Oregonian’s assistance when that time comes.
I’m completely surprised that someone who chooses that moniker would be so whiny about something so meaningless.

— More Casey on Fehmel: “I went out to make a change and the umpire said, ‘God I hope you’re not taking that pitcher out.’
Been fixing up one of the rentals all day, and saw the last two innings being up 9-2. So glad my in-depth analysis was proven wrong. On to another CWS at the expense of a SEC team. Love It!! (Places ear on necklace ala Apocylypse Now). All without Luke, but with Bryce filling in…. crazy, drama filled weekend. Can’t wait to write up the next analysis!!! ;)
I spent the day washing and waxing the Bentley… then I had to deposit a pile of dividend checks before I rearranged the patio furniture on my ski chalet in Squaw Valley. Barley made the first pitch.
“They just keep coming,” Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin said. “They’re very inspired and very motivated right now.”
This ^^^ sums up the team right now.
I think part of fehmel’s success was due to them not preparing for him. With his “slow” fastball I thought he might get shelled. Didn’t realize he was so good at all the other pitches. Honestly I don’t even think he looks the part of a great pitcher. I’ll happily take that complete game masterpiece and be wrong about my thoughts on him. Definitely player of the game/series. Next stop Omaha!
Watching Fehmel pitch last year, I’m not that surprised. I mean, this guy was 10-1 with a 2.31 ERA as a freshmen! In my mind, it’s kind of on Yeskie to help fix whatever was happening earlier this year (and maybe he did?). Maybe just the rest did Fehmel some good. I didn’t realize he did not pitch much in high school.
I think he was the backup plan at SS if Madrigal and Grenier signed pro contracts.
I was thinking this morning about LeGarrette Blount.
As long-term angrybeavs regulars will recall, Blount was a star running back for the Ducks who was suspended in early September 2009 for the entire season after committing assault on national TV: “Blount punched an opposing player, a teammate and accosted fans at Bronco Stadium in an outburst caught on national television and replayed countless times. On the following day, Oregon issued a release announcing the suspension and adding “the suspension would remain in effect through any bowl games the Ducks may play in,” and that “he will not be allowed to participate in any games.” Right. Only a month later, Chip Kelly started talking about giving Blount a second chance, and reinstating him. http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindducksbeat/2009/10/legarrette_blount_to_be_reinst.html Chip Kelly then reinstated Blount shortly before the 2009 “Civil War for the Roses”, and Blount was one of the key players leading the Ducks to a 37-33 victory that denied the Beavers a Pac-10 championship and Rose Bowl berth. http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/civilwar/index.ssf/2009/12/civil_war_game_chat_oregon_sta.html
Given Canzano’s recent merciless criticism of Oregon State and Luke Heimlich, and the hardline position Canzano has taken against OSU giving Luke Heimlich a second chance after a juvenile felony conviction, I was curious to see whether Canzano back in 2009 was similarly critical of the University of Oregon and Chip Kelly for backtracking on the season-long suspension of Blount and conveniently reinstating Blount just in time to help defeat the Beavers in the “Civil War for the Roses”.
Here’s the answer: http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2009/11/legarrette_blount_could_learn.html
“Because nobody is rooting against the reinstated running back now. How could you? Whether you agree or disagree with coach Chip Kelly’s decision to reverse his stance and bring the player back, the best thing that can come from all of this is for Blount to get his degree in sociology, and get about creating a new legacy for himself”
“Take the opportunity seriously. Recommit yourself to your life goals. Understand how absurdly close you were to losing it all. If you don’t, the second chance is wasted.”
“Not every university would have been willing to give an athlete that so badly embarrassed it another chance.”
“It is a privilege to play football at a college. Having the letters “O-R-E-G-O-N” on the front of your jersey comes with responsibility and expectation. And But, we live in a society that too often lowers them for people who can run fast and jump high and entertain us with their athleticism.”
“Blount, who has been suspended three times in 18 months at Oregon, is either going to join the ranks of sad souls who blew one final opportunity to get it right. Or he’s going to use this as a springboard to take himself somewhere greater.”
So, for those keeping score at home, Blount deserves a second (or third, or fourth, or fifth) chance for mistakes he made while a student at Oregon (including vicious assaults committed on national tv). Heimlich, in contrast, should not be given a second chance for a mistake he made as a 15 year old juvenile offender.
In the twisted mind of John Canzano, perhaps this makes sense. Or perhaps Canzano is just a world-class hypocrite. I tend towards the latter view.
EXCELLENT!
Very well put, as usual, silver. Thanks.
Forward that directly to him. Good find.
So Blount punching another player who was talking shit = molesting a 4-6 year old girl? Ok dipshit…
It’s obviously Canzanos fault because? You’re a moron.
Jesus man you’ve got some serious issues. Good luck making it through life with that kind of shit rattling around in your inbred white trash brain.
Those who have no legitimate argument often resort to name calling.
You’ve missed the point here and have set up a straw man.
Once a Beav, always a Duck?
Clearly. And by the sounds of it, a rather ignorant one.
I was in a debate with a friend regarding Heimlich and how Canzano thinks Luke does not deserve to be a college athlete any longer. I brought up the fact that Mark Wahlberg was convicted of some nasty hate crimes as a 16 year old, but the general public doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it now and they made him a superstar.
She argued that sexual crimes are worse than hate crimes. I would guess Canzano would argue the assault by an adult is a lesser offense than a sex crime by a minor? In Canzano’s bizarre A-P article yesterday, did he even mention the word minor or juvenile once? I think that is the key factor in all of this (and the research seems to confirm). If I was understanding the New Yorker article Heimlich has about a 3% chance of being an adult offender. I’m comfortable with that, so I don’t see why there should be any restrictions on how he would like to continue his life in college or outside out it as long as he remains compliant with the terms of his conviction.
Yep I’m sure he’s a great guy. I’m sure you’d let him baby sit your daughters! In fact, he might be the BEST person ever!
Good points,? you sick fuck…
Y’all keep trying to justify/down play this. It’s pretty fucking gross!
By the way, in that same 2009 article, Canzano also defends the University of Oregon for giving a second chance to Rodney Woods, “who went from a one-time felon to a controversial University of Oregon defensive back.” Woods was star high school football player and track star who was convicted of felony assault, in an incident where one of the victims died. Woods served seven months in prison, and “was stripped of a college football scholarship to Fresno State.” As a result, “Woods was left hoping that some football program would give him a second chance.”. University of Oregon gave him that second chance. And Canzano enthusiastically praises the University of Oregon for doing so. http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian/john_canzano/index.ssf/2009/11/legarrette_blount_could_learn.html
So, again, Canzano praises the Ducks for giving Rodney Woods a second chance after Woods committed a violent felony while a high school senior football star, in an incident where someone was killed. Heimlich, in contrast, should not be given a second chance for a mistake he made as a 15 year old juvenile offender.
This may make sense to Canzano and to (some) Duck fans. Meanwhile, to more rational people, this is just another obvious example of world-class hypocrisy from Canzano and the Oregonian.
Canazano probably has to use a plastic keyboard cover whenever he writes anything about UO….
Fun fact from the D1 article:
https://d1baseball.com/postseason/at-54-and-4-the-oregon-state-ballaz-return/
News flash:
Our baseball team is really really good.
They are? Huh, I didn’t notice…..
Fullerton dogpiles, heading to Omaha to face the Beavs. Three thoughts:
-their catcher can’t tackle as well as Adley
-they’ve got some s l o w working pitchers
-is that sports psychologist Horton left there still on the payroll?
That’s two thoughts and a question.
A thoughtful question?
ummm…….not really
Haha…well I thumbed my own comment down for being a smart ass.
Does anyone know if there is a video of the full press conference after last night’s game?
Sounds like no Luke in Omaha, based on the statements here from Casey.

OSU is setting up pretty well in the pitching dept. for Omaha.
Let’s assume that Heimlich doesn’t pitch at the CWS. Game 1 should be Jake T., then game 2 could be Drew or Bryce. Game 3 can be the other option for 2. If a 4th game is needed, it gets interesting and Casey might opt for a reliever to start – Mulholland or Eisert – or he could go with a mid-week starter like Britton or Tweedt. That leaves options with Englebrekt, Verburg.
I want to know if any other team has this many options. But the offense staying hot will relieve the pressure.
