Time for Barnes to go?……..is it niners fault?

Trent Bray was on hand in San Diego cheering on the Beavs. Wayne Tinkle took out a paid ad in the zero to very honestly thank Oregon State and Beaver Nation. Two men with class who supported Beaver sports beyond their own programs. Two men canned by Barnes for valid performance related reasons.

And yet, Barnes thanked only Bray, and that with a minimal tweet. Did the way JS left Corvallis cause Barnes to forget his manners? Or maybe he became distracted by the brewing Blueprint Sports story (scandal?). Is Bill Oram the only one who thinks it’s a bad look for OSU and Beaver Sports?  Link below

Feel free to explain where I’m off base, or just BIRG after seeing Miiiitch’s guys beat up on San Diego this weekend.
GO BEAVS!

  1. “The No. 6-seeded Beavers (23-11) will make their first ever appearance in the 32-team NCAA-run consolation tournament and open against No. 3 Wisconsin (13-17) in the first round Thursday at Gill Coliseum. Game time is TBA.”

Hope they get a good crowd!

  2. Great wbc game between the US and the DR 2-1 US advanced to the title game on Tues against either Italy or Venezuela. If it’s Venezuela, that’ll be an interesting twist.

  3. Tres seems to be especially salty…
“Gave his all to OSU for 12 years and accomplished things the school has never done. To not even get a simple thank you is a joke.. and he still has the grace to thank them. A true class act. ”
I get the frustration with the way the AD has handled the transition, but not clear what things WT accomplished that had never been done at OSU.

My guess is that Tinkle and Barnes had a recent falling out. It became pretty obvious that they were both well overpaid for the new era. I think Barnes decided to cancel Tinkle and take some pressure off of himself. This backfired of course. Barnes is a buffoon and can’t get out of his own way. Tinkle seizes the chance to be magnanimous in the exit. Barnes is simply petty, and now Barnes is going to be let go soon enough, I hope.
At the very least Barnes should be reprimanded for the Blueprint disaster and forced to restructure his contract.

Tres, enjoy the all-time scoring crown daddy got you and the millions in eventual inheritance you’ll get courtesy of Beaver Nation and be on your way.

        2

Right. I mean, he’s not wrong that someone so good as a person should deserve some recognition, for at least being a good person. But what’s expected when you fire someone? Bray was his hire and allowed to build his staff in the face of an immense hardship. This all complicated the position he was placed in, and that should be acknowledged. Tinkle was given 12 years and millions more in compensation, and the time for him to leave was a couple years ago.

    • Man Tres seems old enough to get it. His dad is a D1 college basketball coach. 12 years doesn’t happen much at all. You get paid tons of money. Even if you do everything right sometimes you get fired, it is just the nature of the business.

    • I think he’s a good dude, but he constantly underachieved. Went .500 with four ESPN Top 100 players on his roster. Had two of the WORST seasons in OSU history and did a lot of excuse making. He inherited GP-2, and the elite 8 team was once again heading for nowhere and somehow caught fire. 12 years was beyond any expectation for a coach with his win/loss record. He should be thankful!

It amazes me how predictable every baseball season is. Even when Casey was here (warts anybody?). This is a typical season, we start slow, look terrible, etc. However, every season we round into form. Very few years have the Beavs started out hot. By game 20, you’ll have a much better idea of how good this team can be.

I just feel like it’s groundhogs year. The goalposts will move eventually. “They can win games, but their not getting to Omaha”.

Make it to Omaha “They’ll get busted out the first round”.

It’s just funny the short memory.

    • 1
      2

Agreed. The beavers could potentially make Omaha and their bats might be the kind needed to get them to another title. They lack the power of last year’s team but they might be better contact hitters by the end of the season. The guys that struggled early on are starting to produce and the pitching seems strong enough with a lot of good arms but baseball is a funny game as the best team does not always end up with the top prize.

It’s nice to see them on a 10 game streak so early but that could change in a flash given the nature of baseball. At this point, there appears to be a glimmer that the offense has finally figured out how to extend at bats, get deeper into the counts and then produce when they are ahead in the count.

“Oregon State moved up in four of the major polls after a second straight 4-0 week.

The Beavers (14-4) are ranked No. 17 by d1baseball.com, No. 18 by Perfect Game, No. 16 in the coaches poll and No. 15 by Baseball America.”

USA vs Venezuela for the WBC championship tomorrow. If USA wins, we give Venezuela back their country. If Venezuela wins, Venezuela gets their country back so it’s a win-win outcome.

Justin Joyner intro press conference today. Normal new coach sound bites. Wife did not wear OSU gear and they will live in Eugene to start.

Does not have a coaching staff yet.

I was very impressed with the clips I heard on the radio. He wasn’t exactly trying to win over the room, but gave a clear outline of his coaching philosophy. He said something along the lines: “I understand today, this press conference is about me. But this is the last time. From here on its going to be about “We” and “Us” and I’m talking about Corvallis, Oregon State University, and Beaver Nation.”
Seems like a very sharp guy. I’ll give the wife a pass as long as she wasn’t wearing green (Thank goodness they didn’t have the presser TUESDAY!)

Why are people saying Barnes didn’t thank Tinkle? Did they read the release when they fired him?

    https://osubeavers.com/news/2026/2/26/mens-basketball-oregon-state-announces-leadership-change-in-mens-basketball-program

“We are grateful to Wayne for his dedication to Oregon State and for the leadership he has provided our men’s basketball program,” said Barnes. “He has represented Beaver Nation with integrity and commitment…”

Quick Google search of synonyms for “grateful” turns up “thankful” and “appreciative”.

What am I missing? Why the vitriol?

    • 3
      1

I guess there was a social media post by the AD saying “Welcome Coach Joyner” and not an equal social media post thanking WT? Some folks seem especially butthurt about it. :::shrug:::

Like Jack said up above, what are they supposed to say, exactly? “Thanks for the memories WT, you’re fired”? Doesn’t seem like a great exit either. Seems to me like they should acknowledge his parting, as you have noted, and welcome the new coach and try to pump up the donors and fans (and the new coach), as they have done. Doesn’t seem appropriate to put BOTH statements in the same social media post.

  9. Has anyone heard of Beavers football scheduling a pro day? Maybe I’ve missed it, but wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t have one with the player departures since ’23.

  10. 2
    1

t9 bases loaded with two out, Galloway at the bat, Beavs down 3-1.

And Galloway flies out to left, Beavs go down 3-1.

    ‘eaters and USC await.

    • 2
      1

3 hits ……that’s not going to get it done plus the Beavs get 8 walks and can’t take advantage. Midweek games suck

      • 1
        1

So, what will it take to make up for tonight and stay in top twenty ranking? Would 2/3 vs Irvine and a W at USC do? Anything less than that?

          • I’m talking this weekend we play UCI not USC. I’m not sure when USC is on the schedule but if we can sweep UCI and then beat USC in a single game, that would get things back on track. Midweek games are tough bc we won’t throw our best pitcher at them and they won’t either since it is non conference.

    • I looked at WSC roster and they have some good size with three 6’3″ players and one 6’4″ and they did beat the quackers this year plus played in a tough b10 conference so this will be a tough game. Wisconsin has lost 10 in a row so….

  11. 2
    2

Per OLive, Beavs get a new WR commitment from a 6’3″ 180lb kid from California. He had offers from SDST, Air Force and New Mexico. He’s in the class of ’27 FWIW.

  12. 0
    4

Barnes should definitely be fired. But I will die on the hill that he is excellent at hiring coaches. He hired Canham which has been a success. He hired Bray, which was the correct decision. The whole fan base wanted Bray even though he didn’t pan out. He then got Shephard which was undoubtedly a great hire based on what I have seen thus far. And then he gets a guy who was considered by some to be the best available candidate for basketball. Now will the results add up? Time will tell. But no doubt we need to get rid of Barnes.

    • 2
      5

How has Shephard been a great hire as he hasn’t even coached a single game at this point? I mean he might have the potential to be a great hire but the jury is still out. Right now it’s the honeymoon phase and everyone seems to like the guy but that could quickly end if the Beavs don’t show some major improvements on the field.

Personally, I think the guy will have some success but before he’s anointed as a great hire, let’s give him some time to settle in and prove his worth. I certainly don’t expect miracles in his first year, but he if he can get to 4-6 wins next season, that would be a solid start moving forward.

Bray was put in a job that he really wasn’t prepared for especially given the team got blown up. So I’ll give barnes a pass on that one.

Barnes completely mishandled the Blueprint situation so that’s a big negative. It sounds like he also screwed up on handling Payton’s offer to help build a more competitive NIL program too.

A fresh start with two new HCs and a new AD would have made sense given some failures in recent situations, but here we are so I’m willing to be patient to see how things shake out.

    • 4
      1

“The whole fan base wanted Bray even though he didn’t pan out”

Unequivocally false. Not everyone was on board with Bray getting the job. And it was obviously the wrong choice. And how can you even say that about Shepherd? He hasnt even coached a frigging game yet.

The jury is still out on that

  13. Beaver logo on the Moda Center court for the Portland March Madness games, that’s good to see. Does that mean we’re “hosting” these rounds? Whatever that means.

  14. 31-22 Wisconsin at halftime as the beavers are shooting around 30% if that. Their bigs are out bigging the Beavs and everyone we penetrate the paint, we get swatted. We are getting out boarded too.

  15. Start of 4th 49-43 Wisconsin. Bolden is our only consistent scoring threat. How Wisconsin has lost 10 in a row is a puzzle. They have good size, quick guard and good post play.

      • 1
        2

We shall see but there’s a few players he should cut loose bc he’s got 3 incoming FR and 4 out of eligibility. My guess is everyone returns that was an impact player and then Cat F comes back but he needs to add at least one more quality 6’3″ or 6’4″ via the portal. Being on the revamped pac12 should help so we will see.

Wisconsin bigs were just better than ours so…..

  16. 4
    3

Shows how far the gap is between a 23 win WCC team and a 13-17 B1G team that had lost like 7 in a row.

How much longer is Scott Rueck gonna put up with minimal support before moving on to greener pastures.

We’ve all seen what he can do with a talented team

    • Maybe Scott saw how Jonathan’s pasture change worked out? Sure, he got a fat buyout and early retirement, but i don’t think that is what motivates Rueck. Perhaps a Gonzaga or Stanford could sway him, we’ll see.

I think Rueck, Shepard, Casey, Payton, Jade Carey, Brandin Cook, Matt Moore, Sidney Weise (and Canham, Joyner?) could maybe energize a new AD and alumni to improve resources.

There will be another reset in the near future, maybe the B10 & SEC form their own league so they have a manageable number of schools to do a CBA(?), and everyone else will have to adjust again. I’m not sure how an AD prepares for the amount and scale of upcoming change, but lining up resources seems necessary either way.

If Rueck leaves, I suspect it will be to an environment that offers more than cash.

        • 1
          2

Beavers have an incoming 6’4″ Fr, Evelini Smith from Stockton and she’s nearly a double double player that runs the floor well and is a Taylor Jones type talent. Evelini Smith (6-4 C, Stockton, CA): Committed 10/24/2025; provides size in the paint.

Ashley Uusitalo (5-9 SG, Kirkland, WA): Committed 9/14/2025; top-rated Washington prospect known as a high-volume shooter and playmaker.

Maggie Warpus (6-2 F, Binghamton, NY): Committed 7/27/2025; 2025 Class B Player of the Year in New York, described as a versatile defender and scorer.

Taylor Young (5-8 PG, Central Point, OR): Committed 5/23/2025; led Crater High School to an Oregon state championship

We will see if anyone hits the portal from April 7-April 22, but I can think of 1 or 2 players that didn’t see much PT at all leaving. If Rueck wants to keep a 15 player roster, that would open up two slots.

The positive about next year as Cat will be back along with Kennedie, Allie, Alonzo, Lindemann, and others provided they don’t get the notion to go portal. Combined with some highly ranked incomimg freshmen, Rueck will have this team in the hunt going into the new pac12.

        • Thursday night game and most people have to work. I’ve been to Thursday night games and the crowds are certainly smaller than a Saturday game

        • Attendance was reported as 2014.
You thought correctly, the womens team has one of the best and largest followings. They often play teams that are used to “crowds” of less than 500,

  17. Baseball needs to win the series this weekend vs UC Irvine. Irvine does not have a good RPI so a sweep is almost required. These road wins are a must after that dismal showing at Portland.

Then at USC who is #7 in the RPI. That is a must win game too

The schedule gets very home friendly and soft after this road trip so RPI gains will be hard to come by.

Still on track for a #3 seed. Possibly a high #2 seed. Hosting is likely out of the question unless they run the table.

  18. 2
    1

Speaking of baseball, lets check in with our alumni in the pros

    Guys solidly on rosters,
Rasmussen, Rutschamn, Larnach, Eisert, Boyd, Kwan,

Battling for jobs or given a good look in spring training,
    Bazzanna, Conforto, Meckler, Melton,

Lots of other guys still making their way through the minors. Marlins have several Beavs at the lower levels, Arquette, Forrester, McDowell, Weber and May.

  19. 1
    1

MP said Dax has 60ks in only 35 innings? Or something like that? Anybody know what the best strikeout rate is for a starter?
If he a legit National Pitcher of the Year candidate?
    Pretty wild numbers.

    • Yes, those stats are right. He leads in ncaa in strikeouts. A few guys are ahead of him for k per 9.

With the preseason hype he got, he’s likely the favorite for NPOY at this point.

Only a couple nitpicking points, his walk rate is just ok and he could be more efficient in his pitch count. Improve on both and he’ll rack up the innings as well and keep the bullpen with less innings.

  20. Quite the performance:

“A former Oregon high school star just became a March Madness hero.

Roosevelt High alumnus Terrence Hill Jr. delivered a game-high 34 points, hit a game-tying layup to send the game into overtime and canned the game-winning 3-pointer with 15 seconds left as No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth stunned No. 6 North Carolina 82-78 in the Round of 64 of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in Greenville, S.C..”

  21. 1
    2

Ducks ranked ahead of the Beavs in at least one poll. Ducks 18-3 so far 14-1 at home, 2-1 road and 2-1 neutral sites. Imagine playing 15 out of 21 games on your own field…

  22. The bullpen is exactly what most teams hope to find once they get the starter out of the game. It is pretty wild how inconsistent the bullpen is from game to game. There isn’t a single pitcher who is nails every time. Each guy rotates electric stuff with maddening control, giving opponents multiple opportunities to get runners on, and big innings.

    • 1
      1

Roblez has been nails. He looks like he just got up off the basement couch but he’s been very consistent.

I think it’s the sequence of guys. Just don’t have that shutdown 7th or 8th inning guy. Or at least enough of them. Queen can be that guy, but these guys don’t pitch on back to back days. And when they need to come in the 6th, it’ll make for a long game.

I’ll keep making the point that Hutcheson, Edwards and Kmatz regression is really hurting the team. If they were on, I could see this team ceiling as supers. Right now it’s just making the tourney.

  23. Bases loaded zero outs for UCI as bunt single to load them up. OSU brings in the closer, I can’t remember his name, but he promptly gets an infield fly out and then btob K’s to keep the Beavs at 5-3 lead.

  24. 4
    1

Robles comes in in the 8th with bases loaded and shuts them down and in the 9th KS the first two hitters, gives up a single and then slams the door shut with a strikeout. Beavs win 5-3.

    • 3
      1

As per OSU beat reporter Nick Daschel, both key players of OSU Men’s Basketball, Jordan Pope and Tyler Bilodeau, received generous sums exceeding $500,000 each to transfer to different schools. Pope opted for a NIL package and moved to Texas, whereas Bilodeau headed to UCLA. OSU’s fan base, Dam Nation, collectively offered $120,000 in NIL benefits to each player. This underscores the current landscape of Beaver sports, where financial considerations are paramount. How will OSU sports survive in the realities of 2024 NIL landscape? Once again, finding money sources becomes imperative.

  25. 17
    2

We are now seeing the collapse of March Madness as an unintended consequence of football realignment and NIL. Mid-major conferences have had teams poached for 10 years as conference after conference tried to back-fill after losing their marquee basketball programs to P4 conferences that continued to expand. So the traditional mid-major is no more. They are all in new conferences and recognized as part of the P4 eco-system to some degree.
(Boise St in football, Gonzaga in basketball)

NIL has not only mirrored but accelerated the change. Mid-major schools are de facto farm systems providing bench players at 6 figures for P4 conference schools.

ESPN has ruined what were the 3 best things about college sports: Regionalism, 5 year single program athletes, Cinderella in March madness.

I didn’t think about football realignment affecting March Madness like this, but it is a logical outcome, and the numbers bear it out. There could be 7 Big10 teams in the sweet 16. Only St John’s, UCONN, Utah St are left outside of the P4 conferences Big10, Big12, ACC and SEC.
Also, when I watch Duke and Michigan get nearly every favorable call in their 2nd round game, I wonder how much the refs/DraftKings are affecting this “entertainment product”…
We know $$$ billions of dollars are at stake, invested, rewarded just related to conference wins, future payouts to conferences, as part of the NCAA tournament, but man how much more is being wagered and how can we believe it is all above board?

NIL has made singing day meaningless because every kid knows if they play decently well, they will get a big money NIL offer from a rival school, or at least form an SEC/Big10 school. OSU is a pipeline and nothing more in football, basketball, and coaches. All of a sudden, college sports don’t hav every much appeal.

  26. If edwards can repeat his performance today, that will be a added bonus for the bullpen’s depth. Hopefully it will be a sign of things to come from him.

  27. 1
    4

With all of their resources, the ducks WBB program sure sucked against Texas today. They might be in a P4 conference but they look like anything but a legitimate P4 program.

  28. 1
    1

These road wins are super important as the Beavs dropped in RPI even with a win. It’s because the power teams are moving into their conference seasons and their RPIs are going up with their SOS.

So that means the USC game is a must win. Beavs don’t face anyone above them in the RPI the rest of the year after USC. So the SOS won’t improve much at all.

    • Learn a lot? Maybe, but given that it’s a single mid-week game it will take a blow out either way to feel we’ve learned “a lot”.

  29. USC SOS 98
    OSU SOS 107

    USC 18-0 Home, 6-1 road
    OSU 4-0 Home, 7-1 road, 6-4 neutral

As you can see, USC has a very friendly home schedule so far compared to OSU and their SOS is not overwhelmingly higher than OSU. I like our chances on Tuesday if our bats get going.

    • Also, USC has a road conference series vs MD that weekend so we will not have their best pitchers but probably maybe their best midweek guy. I hope the Beavs throw Queen as the starter.

      • Baseball American currently has the Beavs ranked #13.
D1 Baseball Beavs #14. So it would appear the sweep didn’t hurt the Beavs against a sub .500 UCI team. Beat USC tomorrow night and sweep mercer this weekend could get us back into the top 10.

        • 1
          2

Mercer is currently 20-4 but their SOS is 219. So sweeping them is essential although it will not improve our SOS. That said, just keep winning and that’s all that really matters.

  30. The Oregonian has reported that 3 star basketball forward Drew Anderson has switched his commitment from the OSU to Stanford. It states that the Beavs now do not have any basketball commitments. I understand the coach turnover and/or NIL may have affected his choice. Just wondering how much time Joyner is spending for the Beavs recruiting versus working with Michigan’s team for their NCAA tournament run. We probably will have to wait a few months to see how well he can recruit.

    • Sorry to duplicate the info! Thought I posted that a couple of hours ago, but apparently never hit “post” after entering the text!

Not sure why Anderson decommitted, he was guaranteed a lot of playing time!

    • 2
      1

Anyone who has been through turnover at their job and inherits a new manager/boss knows the new boss will say the right things, but also likes to bring in their own people. It’s only natural. If I committed to OSU and the new coach was someone I had no relationship with, and I have a relationship with a coach of a school I ended up passing on – I’d likely do the same thing if the NIL is the same. Even more so if the NIL is better than the place I originally committed to.
You want to work/play for someone who is invested in your success.

      • 1
        1

Two places Joyner will start looking is the commits to St. Mary’s and Utah State who are now free agents, not to mention the rest of their rosters.

  31. Joyner needs to be a scratch cook:

Forward Drew Anderson, a 3* prospect who committed to the Beavers in October, announced his commitment to Stanford on Monday.

The 6-foot-9, 215 pound Anderson was OSU’s lone remaining commitment, and their highest rated since 2021.

  32. 1
    4

Unless you subscribe to b10+, you won’t be able to watch the USC OSU game tomorrow night. That’s why I have a subscription to ESPN+ so I could watch WBB and mens baseball…..

  33. Krieg had a great bp session, per Parker…..but Porter starts at 1b.
After a Hubbard 2 RBI HR in the t1, now it’s sacks full and no outs in the t2.
2-0 good guys and lookin’ to add on.
Talt does add on with a SAC fly, now 3-0 Beavs, 1 down t2

  34. 1
    3

7-0 good guys and am not surprised as my earlier comments yesterday seem to be turning out. Still a long ways to go but SC pretty weak SOS.

  35. Question was asked above, wondering if we’d learn “a lot” about the Beavs today. Through 3 innings Beavs up 7-0.
Not ready to answer yet, but some observations:
-SC mid week arms haven’t looked good, five arms have combined for: zero k’s, 5 bb’s, 2 hbp, 1 wp, 6 hits
-Singer and Talt still getting RBI’s
-Overall some good base running by Beavs
-Beavs Connor Mendez 2.2 innings on just 35 pitches

    • Like I said, usc very home heavy schedule and 98 SOS combined with a road conference series this weekend so….USC probably not as good as their record and not as bad as they are showing today

  36. I tune in at 9-0 and all I hear is USC scoring 4 runs to make it somewhat of a game. Should I turn it off and test the superiority of superstitious behavior or keep listening which would surely put a Beavs win at risk?

  37. 2
    1

    Final 12-4
Gonna be interesting to hear y’alls verdict on what we’ve learned to this point.
    Couple observations:
-Beavs only struck out ONCE today
-Beavs pitchers gave up only 5 hits
-Batted .250 vs SC ace bullpen arm, Troy…small sample
-No errors and a couple very good defensive plays

Now, we all SC fans for a couple months?

    • 2
      1

USC played this like a spring training game. Only one pitcher went more than an inning. But who cares, it was to the Beavs benefit.
This was a big win for the beavs, quad 1 road win. Need USC to stay hot and win a lot of game to keep this as a quality win.

Walks and HBP will eventually catch up to the Beavs. 6 walks and 3 HBP.

Beavs starting to settle into a regular lineup now with only a couple guys still fighting it out for a starting role.

  38. 3
    8

Like I said, the Trojan record was based on a soft schedule so I’m not surprised at all. Sweep Mercer this weekend, and we could very well end up back in the Top 10.

  39. Remaining schedule and current RPI

    Mercer – 80
    UW – 189
    Lamar (road) – 98
    WSU ( 2 mid week road) – 71
    Cal Poly – 52
    Oregon (2 mid week) – 43
    Fullerton – 152
    Hawaii – 110
    UTRGV – 67
    CSUN – 144
    Portland (2 mid week) – 68
Long Beach St (road) – 251
    Air Force – 126

Clear favorites in the rest of the season. Losses to anyone over 100 RPI is going to hurt a lot. It’ll be why they are fighting for a 2 seed come tourney time.

  40. 6

Glad I could assist with the W today by tuning out. I listened to less than 5 minutes and only heard the USC scoring sequence.
Thank you oob for sound advice to turn it off asap. We all ply a part.

Glad the bats are staying alive for more than a game here and there. The lineup looks a lot more potent than games 1-4 in Surprise.

Is the bullpen still coming into form? Does Dorman have a steady group around Robles yet?

I am enjoying the efforts to lean into the small ball approach.
    Defense seems pretty good.
    Starting pitchers are looking great.

Good reminder that especially with turnover on college sports rosters to give teams time. I think meshing guys together is a necessary skill coaches have to have. Mitch seems to be steadying the ship. This program was top 8 last year and that’s an accomplishment.

  41. I realize it was against mid-week arms, but:

“The first visiting team to win in 19 games at USC’s new on-campus stadium, Oregon State (18-5) scored more runs than any team against the Trojans this season.”

    USC is now 24-2.

    • 2
      1

Wonder how different the SC mid-week bats are? Seems the Beavs pitchers kept them under control pretty well……….now, about those HBP/bb

      • 1
        2

Typically, there’s not too many changes in the starting lineup for midweek games with maybe a position player or two. So I’m pretty sure we faced there starting lineup or at least 7 of their regular bats. I could be wrong, but from what I’ve seen, coaches like to keep their players in a groove especially when they’re winning and playing good baseball as USC was.

  42. Here is “the rest of the story” regarding erstwhile DC Lance Guidry. It’s funny that the wife had a hard time with the rain. It rains more (in inches) in Louisiana than it does in Corvallis.
    https://www.footballscoop.com/2026/03/24/lance-guidry-points-to-money-and-a-crying-wife-as-two-reasons-behind-leaving-oregon-state-for-memphis-after-just-20-days

Hope they have fun in Memphis. Crazy he’d get that much of a bump from another G5 school.

      • Yeah, that actually makes me concerned about JMS judgment. Guidry looks and sounds like a shady guy and makes life altering decisions based on a $$ only. If he has been in coaching for a couple of decades, and needs to justify his decisions with high school job anecdotes and his crying wife, he is a loser.
His salary is paid by a lot of people who still don’t make much over $50k and yet he makes it sound like that was a lifelong scar of hardship that he is still affected by making so little money 20 years ago.
Good riddance to a no doubt over-rated and failed defensive coordinator. I hope he flops badly at Memphis just based on his actions/statements towards Corvallis and OSU.
His sorry excuses are just cover for how much he is a mercenary looking for another pay hike. Hometown Louisiana roots of his wife didn’t keep him from bouncing to Miami. Even worse that he is trying to somehow shield his real motives by throwing his wife under the bus as a crybaby whiny and nagging wife. Not impressed.

        • I think JMS pivoted nicely with our new DC and DL coaches when the mercenaries left – but it definitely sucked for us when we needed to have a full staff ASAP.

I get what you’re saying, but with what we’ve seen with Niner and other coaches, many know they can get a nice contract with lots of future retirement money. I think this will happen more frequently, especially with coordinators, who are hungry for more money/position/prestige.

      • Rain? What a fucking gomer, admit it, you’re just a douche nozzle

        Annual Average Rainfall(Inches)
        Baton Rouge, Louisiana 62.1″
        Miami, Florida 61.9″
        Memphis, Tennessee 54.6″
        Corvallis, Oregon 42.7″

  43. Anyone read Canzanos article today? I can’t read the entire thing but it had this snippet…..

A current Division I athletic director called me on Wednesday to tell me a well-known search firm reached out, unprompted, and said they suspected the OSU job might open as soon as next week.

Hopefully there is some truth to this. Makes me nervous for the two new coaches as I think both have a lot of potential and a new AD might want his own coaches but if there is a new AD he better fund the programs like they deserve and how we have all been told they will be funded.

    • Seriously, do people actually read Canzano? It would literally never occur to me to even go to his website to view whatever articles he is writing, let alone would I pay for a subscription to do so. What a strange business model.

      • Well no matter what you think of him, he’s well connected and trusted and usually first on a lot of things regarding sports in Oregon and the west coast.
Oregonian and ESPN are now reporting Barnes is “retiring’ now.

    • Two words: Fuck. Yes.
Too bad it happened after he made more money than he deserved, made us a laughingstock with Blueprint, and generally didn’t meet the moment when it came to NIL or support for the programs. I hope the next guy/gal who takes the position isn’t as long paid as much, but receives incentives for the performance of all OSU sports.

      • 3
        2

The writing on the wall after BP joke as well as dissing GP when he offered help to rebuild NIL. Pat Casey as the new AD or Smiley Riley?

        • That’s not what GP offered. He wanted to be the next HC. And when he was told that was not a likely outcome, he wanted to be an assistant. Then he was told that would be up to the new HC.

          That’s it.

  44. Is there anyone else left to complain about now?

Definitely not great for the new hires, ADs and major sport coaches usually go hand in hand. But maybe they’ll hire in house. Cheaper which seems to be the theme.

    • 1
      4

I wonder if Scott Rueck would consider it.

The sad thing is Casey or Riley are the only guys in 25 years that actually kind of make sense if you play the “in the family” card along with asking them to do it on the cheap.
The sad thing is based on all other sports, coaches and athletes, it will be a stepping stone job for anyone not really associated with OSU. And if Jonathon Smith is an indication, it doesn’t matter if the next person is or isn’t associated with OSU. OSU will get the worst outcome anyway.

Maybe the best thing is that Tinkle and Barnes and Barnes lousy sidekick are all gone.
It can’t get much worse right?

      • 3
        2

I feel like things are moving in the right direction. Beavs starting to operate like a small school. Staff who are paid at the power conf level are out. New salaries are more in line with the new PAC12.

New AD will be paid half of what Barnes was, in line with other PAC12 schools.
Joyner is being paid in the middle of the new PAC12.

Look for Rueck to have his contract right sized in the next couple years or he leaves for $greener$ pastures. His contract is way more than anyone in the PAC12 and he’ll need to make the tourney the next two years to justify the contract. I think he’s making more than Joyner at the moment.

    • I want Shawn Heilbron back. UCLA has never recovered from losing him, and he set up a great foundation at OSU for fundraising and SA success.

  45. 4
    1

    Jordan Pope:

Pope ended his college career playing on a broken foot after suffering the injury in Texas’ upset win over Gonzaga in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He said it was a clean break, and in order to play he needed to reduce the swelling to make the pain tolerable against Purdue.

After conversations with the doctor, I couldn’t break it anymore,” he said after the game. “So there wasn’t much high risk in terms of the actual injury. Obviously, I heard other things, but I had nothing to lose. It was a Sweet 16 back home in front of my family. I’m playing for my teammates, my coaches. Never had this opportunity again. I couldn’t let that pass.”

Pope said he underwent a lot of therapy in order to be available for the game.

Pope scored 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting in the loss (to Purdue tonight), with all his points coming on 3-pointers. The 6-1 guard was remarkably available in his career, starting 129 of his 134 career games at Oregon State and Texas.

  46. Whomever the new AD is, I hope they have connections with Rueck, Joyner, and Shepherd. That would be a tough needle to thread, but I’d settle for two out of three. Joyner seems tied to the area for now at least with his wife working down the road. Baseball is an entity unto itself, no AD is going to mess with baseball. I’d rather have an AD with no past ties to OSU, an assistant AD looking to move up who has crossed paths with the three mentioned above would be better than someone with previous OSU experience.
I’ll hurl if it ends up being an “outside the box” hire, some sports marketing person, or even worse – a former Nike exec.
I’m guessing Barnes is staying on to qualify for PERS.

    • The PERS vesting period is five years. So that’s a silly posit.

He’s probably advising because he led the writing of the guidelines for the House Settlement… and worked with Murthy and Gould to restart the Pac12, apparently with no help from Wazzu… and helped to force the Traitorous 10 to shove the fuck off in the lawsuit… and helped manage two independent seasons of limbo for football and baseball, with a pending lawsuit that has a court date in November involving the MWC… oh, and just being the AD of a major state university.

Wearing multiple hats over the last three years was probably exhausting, especially for someone who almost died during the process. But the institutional knowledge he has from those three years needs to be explained to the new AD.

  47. Speaking of Rueck, recall that after the last game he told Ron C that his life under the current NCAA set up is much busier than in the past. No time for golf in the off season with the NIL/transfer portal now. Said he’d be trying to figure out who will return in the following few days.

That’s why I took note of Cori Close’s recent statements. She’s exhausted for the same reasons mentioned by Rueck.
Sure, they both make a lot of money and, for her, menopause could be a factor. Still the workload and skills needed for coaches is certainly changing and might be a factor for changes (guardrails) to the system. And all the while the suits in power stress only over their personal portfolios.

Hopefully, she’s so exhausted she coaches a shitty game and my Gophers can upset the traitorous, interloping fUCLA Bruins.
      A man can dream…

      • Director of Player Personnel would be the correct term. GMs do the COO job for sports teams, including the hiring and firing of head coaches.

DPPs work with the HC by scouting and then managing the recruitment of players targeted by that collaboration. The GM in college would be the AD, who would sign off on the negotiations performed by the DPP.

It’s not really a subtle difference, which was explained by Barnes once, I believe. The term “general” should lead one to intuitively understand this, if they’re not knowledgeable about sports hierarchy.

If we’re talking about a GM within the NIL office, then we’re talking about someone who heads up that specific office and had all the powers of a true GM… within that office. So their title would likely be something like NIL GM. Optimally, they would have assistant or associate GMs for every sport. But times are tight right now.

  48. Edwards looking STRONG, AJ……not so much.
B8, Krieg to leadoff, 5-4 Mercer. If the opportunity to run for Krieg occurs, who to ya put in at 1b for the 9th?

EDIT/ADD: forget it, pinch runner problem solved…….another K by Krieg

  49. Shepard, the WR whisperer, picks up a big WR:

Oregon State is adding to its receiving corps.

Ross Nickson III, who signed with Colorado State in December, posted to Instagram that he was coming to OSU on Thursday. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Nickson had 27 catches for 505 yards and 10 touchdowns in 10 games at Riverside Community College last season. He had 19 catches for 292 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games in 2024.”

7-5 good guys b8 as big double to plate two runs. It has been a struggle bc Mercer is a good ball club with 3 HRs today

    • “big double to plate two runs”…..by Hubbard. (after another “big double” by Talt.)
Both Vance and Haight scored from first on those doubles, no flukes.

Dax with one bad inning, otherwise dominant. Nice to see the offense bailing out the bullpen.

Another day, another bullpen arm failing. Outside of Roblez and Queen. It’s hard to know who to trust.

SO Carolina up 43-25 almost halftime vs Reagan Beers and Oklahoma. If SC wins, it will mean RB had her most successful season at OSU reaching the Elite 8. Go SC…I will never root for a traitor.

  53. CW has a long pause in the Nascar stuff and not showing beavers baseball.. the second time this has happened the last two weeks. Freaking NASCAR….

  54. Post race interviews, etc. by the time the CW shows the baseball game it will be in the 4-5tj inning. What a bunch of garbage and I tried to stream it and it doesn’t even show it’s on the schedule.

  55. Finally, 45 minutes into the game and CW has finally started showing the game.. 1-0 bad guys as EK has 7 ks but gave up a solo shot.

  56. Beavs break it wide open with a 6 run 5th and lead 9-2. 2HBP, walk, a couple of key doubles and it’s a 7 run lead. This team is starting to really excel in getting key hits vs HRs.

    Fact, myth, or convenient excuse??
Per a Mercer insider, their batters were complaining they couldn’t pick up Roblez pitches Friday because of his long hair.
Maybe watch for a long hair trend now?

    • 2
      3

Um, last time I checked, the ball is white and Roblez’s hair is dark. That should be sufficient contrast to see the ball. Good thing he doesn’t have a beard too or they’d use that as an excuse.

      • Before Roblez’s first appearance in the spring, Dorman lectured him about keeping his change up low down outside of the strike zone or the other team will knock him around to which he relied “ they haven’t seen my F*cking changeup. He’s got a necessary trait for a great closer, big onions

      • That’s why Santa Claus has a lifetime ban from major-league baseball. With his long white hair and beard, you can’t see the ball…
        #safteyfirst

  58. “Joth Ricci, an alumnus and former CEO of Dutch Brothers who now serves as executive chair for Burgerville, is an accomplished businessman who was involved in the hires of both Shephard and Joyner. San Diego AD Kimya Massey is a former OSU associate who spearheaded the construction of a glitzy new Basketball Performance Center on campus. Boise State’s Jeremiah Dickey connects with that school’s fans in ways that Barnes never did.

Or whoever else a search firm turns up.”

I didn’t realize Ricci was involved in the Shepard and Joyner hires. Is he a valid candidate to replace Barnes?

    • Ricci is one of our biggest boosters, and people were complaining that he was sitting with Barnes at the WCC Tourney. It’s why he was involved with both committees, despite people making fun of their existence. Barnes gave him a prominent role in making those decisions.

    • 1
      3

I think they have a shot to get into the top 10. Interesting during the broadcast that Talt commented this teams chemistry is much better this year and that’s a big deal. I think this team has the potential to make Omaha if guys in the bullpen step up. Edwards has been solid the last few appearances, Yeager looked good today along with some other guys. Too bad Kreig hasn’t figured out how to hit for contact and inge didn’t play at all so I’m not sure if he’s injured. 16-1 in March and 21-5 overall is solid.

I hadn’t read this until today that Isaiah Hodgins resigned with the Giants for one year, a little over a mil. Hopefully he can increase his production next year.

  60. I think they need to be near perfect the last 6 weeks to get a top 8 seed, unlike last year we have a ton of home games down the stretch and I don’t see the q1/q2 wins to help our RPI if we lose more than a couple games.

Warren Nolan Predicted RPI has us only losing 2 games and ending up rated 6 in the RPI with a final record of 50-7. Realistically 46-11 and a top 16 seed.

  62. Spring football returns this week:

“…In January, Oregon State lost quarterback of the future Tristan Ti’a and Gabarri Johnson. Murphy stayed behind. His loyalty was rewarded with a helping hand – new offensive coordinator Mitch Dahlen is a quarterback guru – and a scheme change: Dahlen and new Oregon State head coach JaMarcus Shephard espouse an aggressive, vertical passing game reminiscent of Shephard mentor Mike Leach at Washington State.

So far this Spring, Shephard has praised the incoming senior Murphy, but competition is expected. FCS Jerry Rice Award-winning Mercer transfer Braden Atkinson completed 66% of his passes last season, with a blazing 34 touchdowns versus only 11 interceptions. For comparison, Murphy completed only 58% of his passes, while throwing 9 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. Atkinson undoubtedly has the better stats, but Pac-12 football represents a new challenge for the true sophomore. The same can be said for Western Michigan transfer Brady Jones, who boasts impressive measurables (6’4” tall) and absurd junior college stats (47 touchdowns in 2024) before slumping at Western Michigan last Fall.

WR Freauff remains in Corvallis. His presence locks down one of the Beavers’ starting three wide receiver spots, but the rest of the receiver room remains a mystery.

Alongside Freauff, only three other Beavers wideouts have suited up in orange & black: Karson Boschma, Malachi Durant, and Jhae Drummer. Last season, that trio combined for a mere 8 catches, 120 yards, and 2 touchdowns.

Similarly, former four-stars Aaron Butler and Aeryn “Bubba” Hampton lack gaudy statistics. On paper, FCS transfers Adonis McDaniel – a teammate of quarterback Braden Atkinson – and Xayvion Noland can each offer better production than Oregon State’s returning receivers, but neither player has experience facing FBS competition.

In this environment, true freshmen Jesse Legree, Jameson Powell, and Cynai Thomas have a genuine shot to earn playing time.”

    • American Conference Football teams:

      East Carolina
      Florida Atlantic
      Memphis
      Navy
      North Texas
      Rice
      SMU (Southern Methodist)
      Temple
      Tulane
      Tulsa
      UAB (Alabama–Birmingham)
      USF (South Florida)
      UTSA (Texas–San Antonio)
      Charlotte

Candidates: North Texas? UTSA? Rice? Tulane?

  63. So, has this team made a believer out of AB yet, or is the jury still out? How do we compare to last year’s team at this point? Is the pitching stronger, weaker or about the same as far as starters and the bullpen? Defensively, this team seems on par with last year’s club and has some good depth.

I think this team makes more consistent contact, bunts pretty well and has overall better team speed and all of those things are better suited for Omaha if they should get that far..

There is still lots of baseball left before the post season, but I think things line up nicely if the Beavs continue to develop and show continues improvement at the plate.

I give the Beavs about a 50/50 shot at reaching the Super Regionals but it depends on whether we host and who we get paired up with.

    Let’s go Beavs.

    • 5
      2

Well, let’s face facts. If they don’t have an RPI good enough to host, they will be sent to the LSU or Miss St etc. regional and probably struggle on the road with those teams.

I don’t think they are quite as good offensively yet, but they are a better contact hitting than big swing team. I prefer doubles, singles, walks, over everyone waiting for a 3 run homer anyway.

As far as the pitching, the starters are the same as last year so by post-season they should be lights out and a big advantage for OSU. Bullpen really only needs to have 3-4 guys to stay consistent. Maybe Dorman is continuing to send out the guys who are having a tough time to let them works things out, but it looks like he has his 4-5 guys out of the bullpen he can count on.
Mendez will be big in a losers bracket if needed. Roblez is becoming the stopper that can be counted on.
I like Queen, Mendez, Yeager, Roblez, Edwards, along with the starters, so maybe an additional 1-2 arms rise by the end of the year and contribute as well.

Hosting a regional is probably likely. Hosting a super is probably not with schedule ratings etc. If these guys go on the road for a 3 game super at anywhere other than LSU, I think they can win 2/3 and get back to Omaha. LSU is just the toughest environment and the Beavs have been sent there too many times for it to be coincidence. This is where ESPN wants a match-up with storylines and will broker the super-regional match-ups for their made for tv event programming.

Mitch is doing a pretty good job and Dorman hasn’t shown many warts so far either. Gipson seems to being pushing the right buttons with the offensive approach, hit and run, base-running, bunting etc. I like it all actually. They are on a good run.
Now they need to finish the 2nd half on a good streak as post-season approaches.

      • I agree with your analysis. It lines up pretty much with my thoughts especially the hitting for contact. Our team speed is very good and bunting has been resurrected in lieu of the swing for the fences.

  64. From a list of 15 potential ADs:

“Jeff Konya, San Jose State athletic director – A two-time NACDA AD of the year, Konya has been at SJSU for five years. He’s previously worked at Northeastern, Oakland, CSU Bakersfield and SMU.”

Wasn’t someone in here high on SJSU’s approach? Or was it Sac State:

“Mark Orr, Sacramento State athletic director – The AD at Sac State for the past nine years, Orr has made some of the best coaching hires in department history. He was previously AD at Saint Mary’s College and also worked at Cal, his alma mater.

Kimya Massey, San Diego athletic director – USD’s athletic director for the past two years, Massey was previously Oregon State’s deputy AD/COO. He oversaw the completion of the Reser Stadium renovation and was sports administrator for football, men’s basketball, baseball and wrestling.

Not sure why someone would leave SDSU already. Seems like they are/could be in a better position for football and men’s basketball.

Valerie Johnson, Oregon senior woman administrator – The former Portland State AD has been at Oregon for the past three years as deputy AD/SWA and deputy Title IX coordinator.

Anyone familiar with her work at Portland State?

Chris Park, Ohio State associate athletic director for external affairs – Park joined Ohio State in January from Baylor, where he was also involved in development, marketing and engagement. He’s also served at Texas A&M and Washington State.

Joth Ricci, CEO of LYBL and executive chair of Burgerville – An OSU alum, Ricci is the former CEO of Dutch Bros. and has served as a board member with several companies. He would be an outsider to the business of college athletics.

    I wouldn’t mind some Burgerville at Reser…

    • Which one is the cheapest? Salary is likely to be $400-$500k for whoever takes it. That would be in the middle of the new PAC12.

  65. 11
    1

Mr. Broken Record here… Get Orr from Sac St as soon as possible and sit back and be thankful we did. Has there been a more forward-thinking, aggressive AD in the country over the past 5 years than this guy? and He works for peanuts! I think his salary is around $125,000.
Split the job into a CEO and COO capacity, and you could probably get Orr and Ricci for less that Barnes is making himself.

  66. Successfully moved from Division 1 AA to FBS! Getting a new football stadium built. Significant increases in attendance at Football and basketball games.
What do we want out of a new AD? …To get OSU back into the Power Conference level and increase team attendance & fan engagement.

    • It would be a shock to the OSU ecosystem to have a highly effective, visionary, proactive and highly effective AD on campus.
He would probably have immediate resistance from the “down in front” element of the “OSU family” of athletic boosters.
OSU administrators and a majority of alumni have never really been interested in actually winning or excelling in football or basketball, otherwise the last 40 years would have looked a lot different.

If we were fortunate enough to have Murthy actually hire such an AD as Sac St guy, I hope he is as resilient and stubborn in good ways as anyone could possibly be, he will need to be.

      • Part of the issue is those ‘down in front’ people are another constituency that the AD has to make happy…AND…often, they are the ones writing the big checks. They are the ones actually in front of the AD and in his/her ear.

Mid week games are tricky bc you’re going to give some regulars a rest and you’re not throwing your top guys but you’re not facing the other team’s best guys either. I just don’t understand how a team can get beat 18-2:at home by a sub .500 team.

Given the ducks got shutout last night 3-0 by UofP, maybe UofP is the best program in oregon…

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Newberry had 41 carries for 185 yards and three scores and seven catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns in 2024, Shepard called him “quick and twitchy.”

  75. Shepard on spring football game:

““Regardless of what the format is, it’ll for the most part look like a regular football game where we’ll move the ball different,” Shephard said following OSU’s fourth spring practice on Wednesday. “There may be an opportunity for us to move the ball into a certain area of the field because we want to make sure that we’re getting enough reps in certain areas of the field.

“But it’ll look and feel like a regular football versus it being us playing three-point contests on the football field or something like. No, we’re not doing that. We’re going to play football.”

    • Just rerading that makes me wonder if he is having second thoughts about this job after only 4 days of spring ball. He needs to gird his loins for the fall and prepare for disaster as we all should.
Beavs won’t win 3 games if we are left with QB1 Murphy again.

I was more optimistic with GA, incredulous as that sounds….

      • Seth the Grrat couldn’t throw the ball either, but he had that hurdle to make up for it.
At least this year we have 2 potential bench QBs who can take Murphy’s spot if he’s as bad as last year. Somebody said he was playing through a hand injury last year but no idea if that’s true or an excuse.

        • Sounds like Murphy won the offseason again, with new coaches publicly praising his leadership and attitude, and his throwing with the WRs in the offseason. But last year, his similar efforts to build rapport with his receivers didn’t pay off, and he had an over reliance on Trent Walker. Then there was his breakdown in mechanics (throwing off his back foot), and his body language and demeanor on the field and on the sidelines. How will this year be different with probably less talent on the OLine and at WR? If Shepard is a WR Whisperer, maybe he gets them to play at the top of their games faster. But I can also see Shepard’s high energy, verbose approach wearing thin with players if there isn’t progress and competitiveness. The team needs an infusion of talent, and based on the coaches’ salaries and these transfers, there isn’t yet the money to attract talent. Guessing Shepard never got to talk with Jensen Huang. When Texas Tech rolls into Reser with one of the most expensive rosters in college football, the disparities will be brought in specific relief quite quickly.

          • The huge red flag for me was the Texas Tech game. I noticed that every time Murphy got put on his ass… which was just about every play… none of his team mates helped him to his feet.
Offensive linemen usually take personal responsibility for the QB and help them up if they get hit. You will never see a successful team that does not have this ingrained into their culture. But, it also to the relationship he had with his team mates… I don’t think they particularly liked him.

I’m not one to say nice things about the University of Oregon, but I am grateful they held on to Dana Altman and have Coach Joyner’s wife as their women’s soccer coach. Getting a top assistant from a Final Four team as your next head coach might be the best hire Oregon State has made for men’s hoops (at least initially) since hiring Ralph Miller from Iowa.
I don’t know if Oregon would have hired Joyner to replace Altman, but I’m glad we won’t find out. I hope there is a buyout in his contract that makes a move to Eugene cost prohibitive. I don’t care where he goes if he’s successful in Corvallis and heads elsewhere as long as it isn’t Eugene.

  77. “Willamette sophomore Zeke Thomas recently announced on social media that he has committed to Boise State University.

Thomas’ commitment comes early in the recruiting process and locks up one of the Northwest’s best at the position for the Broncos as they prepare to join the reconstituted Pac-12 Conference starting with the 2026 season.

Thomas made a name for himself as a freshman at Crescent Valley, when he earned all-Mid-Willamette Conference honorable mention while breaking the freshman state record with 2,508 passing yards, completing 189 of 293 passes with 28 touchdowns and four interceptions.

The 6-foot, 190-pounder transferred over the summer to Willamette, and after participating in the Les Schwab Bowl, he had an immediate impact with the Wolverines, leading them to the South Central Football Conference championship — their first league title since 2007 — and making the 6A all-state honorable mention list.”

Shepard said in state kids were important. Maybe this kid wants a change of scenery. I imagine if he grows physically and continues to put up numbers like that $ will come calling…it’s early in the process.

  78. Given the full schedule has been released for football, what’s your predictions for # of wins? I don’t see very many wins on the schedule….

    • Roblez closes it out. There definitely is some truth to the thinking that batters aren’t seeing the ball out of Roblez’s hand very well. Lamar batters were getting fooled on pitches that seemed very hittable.

Tomorrow’s game is one to watch. Probably best pitching matchup in the nation. Lamar’s top guy goes and he’s a good one. 1.42 ERA with 59ks over 44 innings.

  79. Roblez gets another save, facing 3 and getting two k’s and a GO.
Defense and pitching allow 2 runs to hold up for Miiiiitch’s guys.
    Glassco two hits (1 HR).
    Dax due to pitch tomorrow.

Tonights win was worth 5 spots in Nolan’s live RPI, now stand at #15

    • 3
      1

The guy Lamar is throwing tomorrow has great stats, lower ERA but about 20 fewer strikeouts than Dax.

I thought the Beavs should have had at least two more HRs but the wind knocked down the ball. Hopefully, Galloway is good to go tomorrow after that freak ball to the neck issue.

  80. 1

According to the broadcast today, the Beavs gave Lamar’s acce and Dax starts tomorrow so it sounds like another low scoring pitcher duel.

Won’t be enforceable since the NCAA doesn’t have an antitrust exemption and they won’t be immune to antitrust lawsuits unless they collectively bargain with the athletes. But that membership changing daily, don’t think that’ll happen anytime soon.

People want fuedalism in college sports. Athletes will never go back to that.

My bad. I guess Trump is a genius. I mean he’s had so many failed businesses and has driven a stake right through the heart of the US economy, why would anyone expect any different outcomes by meddling in college athletics? Furthermore, it seems to me there are many more challenging issues he’s created and caused, that sports should be of no concern to a guy that can’t accomplish a damned thing except to try and destroy what’s left of this country.

      • Good guys leading 9-2 as Talt has a 4-4 day going with 3 RBIs. EK pulled in the sixth after and only gave up 3 hits. Beavers played some small ball and going to RF a lot for singles and doubles. Lamar’s Park is not hitter friend for HRs but this year’s team hits for contact compared to last season.

  81. Justin Argenal, the head coach at Dominican University of California for the past five years, joining the OSU men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach and general manager, according to a source with knowledge of the matter.

  82. Oregon State won’t be adding to its quarterback group after all.

Though offensive coordinator Mitch Dahlen said the Beavers would probably add a fourth scholarship quarterback “for the health of the room,” OSU is sticking with its group as is.

The way the three quarterbacks showed the first three (spring) practices, the depth of our room is unique,” Dahlen said following Friday’s practice, OSU’s fifth of spring. “Most places probably have two that you can win with. We have three guys that can win games and have won games in their career.”

Good guys sweep over a pretty mediocre at best Lamar club 10-3. 24-6 going into WSU for a must win situation to keep their hopes alive at hosting at least a regional if not an outside shot at a top 8. Pitching has been exceptional, fielding has been lights out and combo of much improved contact hitters going with the pitches and small ball really is the way the game was intended to be played. Go Beavs!

Well, there’s always a silver line ng when the ducks lose and leave 18 runners stranded on base. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that high of LOB as I remember.

USC beating UCLA would be huge for our RPI and hopefully our dominant 3 game sweep over shadows the 18-2 taken behind the woodshed to the Dawgs.

Gotta keep winning at WSU Monday and Tuesday . WSU is 14-16 so far with an rpi of 84.

Ucla is now beating usc 9-8 Top9 so……

  85. 10

Former Auburn offensive lineman Broderick Shull, who did not play while redshirting last season, was added to OSU’s online roster. He has four years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-6, 331-pound Shull was a four-star prospect ranked No. 206 overall and No. 22 among offensive tackles in the class of 2025, according to the 247Sports Composite.

    • He was listed as 275/285 coming out of high school. So that’s a lot of weight gain in one year. Recruiting reports from high school listed him as very athletic, which I’m guessing he lost a bit of that. But maybe that’s ok for the level that the Beavs will be playing at.

  86. Wonder if it’s a positive for the bball program the have Joyner coaching in a national title game? Pre NIL, this would have been a pretty good size positive. Post NIL, I’m leaning toward no effect.

It’s a shame they played this game on Easter Sunday. Forgetting not only the Sabbath, but also forgetting the Resurrection. It shows where we are as a society and culture, and what is most important in our culture, the modern Roman Empire pleasing the masses with bread and circus. Yeshua Hamashiach, Jesus is coming back, He is the way, the truth and the life. Even though we are sinners, He died for our transgressions and the sin of humanity. He Is Risen! Happy Resurrection Day and Happay Easter.

      • Yabi Aklog? He’s a top #150 player. 4 Star.

A 4 star recruit and a returning leading scorer? Things are changing in Gill…

        • Yeah, just saw Lake is returning, his “heart is here.”

Lake averaged 13.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 34.2 minutes per game — all career-bests — while starting all 33 games this season. He shot 46.2% from the field, including 38.1% from three, and 82.4% from the free throw line.

    • 1
      2

It looks like Josiah Lake is coming back based on his comments on social media. The beavers MBB could be decent next year.

On the WBB side, Mehyar, Vecina, and Navarro have all said they’re portalizing. With 4 out of eligibility and so far 3 declaring, that opens up 3 more roster spots of Rueck goes for a full roster. I expect at least 1 or 2 more transfers but so far the ones leaving were really non-impact players although Vecina showed signs this season of being a potential contributor. However, the Beavs are guard heavy and need at least 1 if not 2 quality bigs via the portal.

  89. 3
    1

I mean Joyner winning a title has got to improve our recruiting right? Lake returning basically means our odds of being good next year went way up. We have only lost 2 to transfer portal. Next year could be saucy…

I just posted something very similar, but I think he’s got some decent talent to work with and his two incoming players sound pretty good.

Curious if he could persuade anyone further down the bench on that Michigan team to follow him to corvallis

  90. 14-0 Beavs in the 5th. Segura pulled after just 4 innings. Probably a good move since he’ll be pitching Sunday on one fewer day of rest

  91. Why have 3 no starters in as position players and sit your guys that are hot? I understand resting players but the beavers rally can’t afford to lose games like this and they are down 4-0 in the 5th inning.

    6-3 Cougs, t7.
How many times has Vazquez passed up a force out at third with poor results? Seem to remember a couple besides today, mental error.

    • 12

Why sit your starting catcher, SS. and Cf for guys that are hitting just around .220!among the three of them bc these games are all critical…this loss is on Mitch for not putting his best and most productive players on the field. This loss could cost them a national seed. .I hope he’s learned from this bc If you want to rest starters, you’ll be on the road in the post season rather than playing at home. You want to rest guys, do it after the season is over or at home against a lesser opponent but not on the road. It was just foolish to rest those three starters.

      • 10

Dude take a break. It was on Scott in the first few innings not the offense. Good grief bro.
Scott had consecutive guys 0-2 and a doing hit leads to 3 runs. You are losing your mind.
I thought Mitch was insane in game 1&2 of the season, but he has surely shown an adjustment with this roster. Give it a rest and let it play out.
I figure they needed to be less than 10 losses no matter what or no top 8 seed anyway.

        • 1
          1

Sitting three starters up the middle isn’t going to affect your team’s offensive production especially when those three non-starters hit a collective .220 if that? Scott has not looked good when I’ve seen him pitch, and again, that’s a coaching miscalculation…These games are too crucial to throw them away by not fielding you best players.

Like I said, if you’re going to go with an alternate lineup, do it at home against a lesser opponent and not on the road. Different story if it was early in the season and you’re still trying to find the right combo of guys but the beavers are too far into the season to be toying with the lineup.

As someone above stated, Beavs dropped from an rpi of 7 to 10 so that’s how critical this loss was. It’s a loss could very well have a negative impact on a national seed and hosting but going somewhere in the south region.

          • With only 23 games left and to hit your 10 loss limit, the Beavs need to go 20-3 the rest of the way. Today’s loss reduced the margin of error by another game so that’s a big deal imo.

  93. Listened to Shepard interview today:

Shepard called out WR Michali Durant for effort and play today, complimented running game and OC play calling in run game, said D is creating TOs.

Also, said team had highest team GPA average in history of team at 3.27…but for 2020 COVID year when everyone was online…laughed about how to interpret that.

Shepard has sat in a position group meeting for every group so far…

Says players show up early regularly, always in coaches’ offices…

Tracks and references beavers sports, basebal, mentioed “Coach Mitch” and 18-0 win, happy for incoming MBB coach Joyner and his NC.

Said team was deficient in strength and conditioning it was hard to pick out someONE that has stood out in terms of growth. Players are putting on mass and strength, also getting better equipment in weigh room. Literally strengthening their necks (“cylinders”), says its great for injury prevention…looking at running, how quads/hamstrings are “firing,” has equipment to measure that and improve it, “that’s why you saw guys that couldn’t perform on Saturdays….” and “just talking about safety!” If players are unavailable to due to injury, on coaches…..interesting. Players seemed prone to injury the last few years….

Has some background that helps him meet with donors, comfortable with it…

Lots of high profile MBB players in the portal and no team appears to be immune from the money grab. Duke, Gonzaga, NC, etc., all losing key players. Another reason why MBB is a tough watch. I watched very little of the tourney……

    • Who’s the key players they are losing? I also didn’t watch much so I’m curious who Duke lost that is a key player or Gonzaga. Anyone with a coaching change is going to lose players. Like you said, no one is immune from it no matter the school or the sport so I’m not sure why it’s a surprise. If folks are going to watch college sports, just enjoy it for what it now is or don’t watch it and don’t be surprised by kids transferring 3 times in 3 years.

There are several NC players leaving, but according to AI none of their stat lines look great.

According to AI here is a summary of some of the players leaving.

Arizona Dwayne Aristode (F): Reports suggest he is likely to enter the transfer portal following disappointment over his role this season.Mabil Mawut (F): A candidate to enter the portal based on roster changes.

As of April 7, 2026, several Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball players have declared for the transfer portal, including key contributors Emmanuel Innocenti, Steele Venters, Braeden Smith, and walk-on Cade Orness. Backup center Ismaila Diagne also entered the portal.

The 2026 men’s college basketball transfer portal is headlined by high-impact players like Kansas forward Flory Bidunga, Wake Forest wing Juke Harris, and UC Irvine shot-blocker Kyle Evans. Other key entries include Isaiah Johnson (Colorado), Paulius Murauskas (Saint Mary’s), and Jackson Shelstad (Oregon).Flory Bidunga (PF, Kansas): A 6-foot-10 sophomore, he was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, averaging 13.3 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks.Juke Harris (Wing, Wake Forest): An elite scorer who averaged 21.4 points, known for creating his own shot and driving to the basket.Kyle Evans (F, UC Irvine): The nation’s top shot-blocker (3.3 blocks) and a first-team All-Big West selection.Isaiah Johnson (CG, Colorado): Averaged 16.9 points and 3.0 assists as a standout guard.Paulius Murauskas (F, Saint Mary’s): A 6-foot-8 junior forward who averaged nearly 20 points.Jackson Shelstad (G, Oregon): A highly regarded guard entering the portal.Other Notable Entrants:Bryson Tiller (PF, Kansas): Highly recruited 6-foot-11 forward.Elmarko Jackson & Jamari McDowell (G, Kansas): Key guard depth departing Lawrence.Somto Cyril (C, Georgia): Potential interior impact player.Karter Knox (SG, Arkansas): Significant talent leaving the Razorbacks. These players represent top-tier talent seeking new opportunities for the 2026 season.

Following the firing of head coach Hubert Davis and the subsequent hiring of Michael Malone, North Carolina’s men’s basketball team is experiencing a significant roster overhaul. As of April 8, 2026, seven players have entered the transfer portal, though some have indicated they may return depending on the new coaching staff’s plans.

Yeah you said key contributors. Don’t believe everything you read on AI. Some of those key contributors on Gonzaga barely played in the tourney or not at all. I don’t see a key contributor from Duke leaving in the portal. Plus, the big time teams that lose key contributors then go buy them in the portal and out of hs. You post a lot of worst case scenario stuff. Do you want a lot of Stephen A. Smith? It gets really old. The mute button doesn’t work all the time when I use a different device. Please take note of the amount of posts and down votes you receive. Maybe just think before you post if you really need to post again and again so often.

          • Excuse me but I clarified that in my subsequent comment by stating that the stats showing in AI we’re not very impressive and they certainly didn’t suggest to me they were key players.

As far as dule is concerned, here are players who have announced their intentions to leave. Whether they are truly impact players, I don’t know bc I rarely watched MBB this season:

Yes, multiple Duke men’s basketball players have entered the transfer portal for the 2026-27 season. As of April 9, 2026, sophomore Darren Harris and freshman forward Nikolas Khamenia have announced their intentions to transfer. These departures are occurring alongside expected NBA Draft entries for players like Cameron Boozer.Key 2026 Portal Departures & Roster MovesDarren Harris (So.): Reported on April 7, 2026, as the first Blue Devil to enter the portal.Nikolas Khamenia (Fr.): Reported on April 8, 2026, as the second departure, with reports from confirming his entry.Context: These moves are part of a reshuffling as Coach Jon Scheyer prepares the 2026-27 roster, which is also adding new talent.

Frankly, I could careless about the downvotes I get or the fact that you think I post too often. You do have the option to not ready comments and that would probably be favorable for is both since you think you are the expert.

  95. It looks like Coach Joyner has quickly put together what looks like a more than decent coaching staff/general manager/strength and conditioning team. From my glance, it looks like a group of up-and-coming assistants with good West Coast ties/ WCC. I’m both very impressed he and OSU were able to accomplish this while he was on his way to help Michigan win a title, and that this hiring cycle wasn’t a clusterfuck like Shephard’s process. What does everyone else think?

TC hitting so far is an impressive.250 average with 2 HRs and 15 RBIs so it looks like LSU is getting a great ROI in Caraway. Just another example where the grass isn’t always greener transferring to another school…

      • He has about $2mil or $3mil in the bank though. He was an inconsistent bat, LSU just took a big swing to get him in case he had a big Junior year. They have the luxury to waste NIL on such gambles.
He is not missed and OSU is better off as it turns out. Granted it was concerning last year when he left though.

        • Yeah, I don’t miss him at all as Paul V. is a much better defensive 3rd baseman and better hitter too. Caraway had a productive last 6 weeks of the season but was too inconsistent. That said, he got his money and is playing for an under-performing LSU team..

        • Where do you get the $2-3 million figure? I doubt random college baseball players are getting higher level QB money in the transfer portal market.

          • Well let’s go over the logic of his situation:
He passed on $1.5 million signing bonus in 2023 to skip the MLB draft and sign with OSU.
He must have had a portion of the NIL budget from OSU last year, even at $200K as a guess,
But his incentive to leave for LSU as their highest rated transfer had to be enough to get his attention, and he was likey looking to recoup some of that bonus amount in the process, so it is logical to me that he has at least as much as the original bonus offer, if not more which might push him up to $2mill after 3 years of college ball…I could be wrong but it seemed like a logical assumption that LSU backed up a Brinks truck to his door and made him their prize off-season acquisition. LSU NIL money is in a different stratosphere than OSU, so I get it if the high NIL numbers for an unreliable 3rd baseman seems a bit out of touch.

          • Trent got $1 Million from LSU. The $200K from OSU was about spot on. They didn’t fight to keep me for a couple reasons. Obviously the money and he wasn’t great in the locker room and only worried about his personal stats.

  96. Winters Grady a former top 100 recruit from Lake Oswego and freshman guard at Michigan is in the transfer portal. My brother who is a massive Michigan fan thinks there is a possibility he follows Joyner to Oregon State to be closer to home. Would be a massive get if it happens. But I won’t hold my breath.

  97. It will be interesting to see how the new coach fills out his roster.

As of April 8, 2026, seven players from the Oregon State men’s basketball team have entered the transfer portal following the 2025-2026 season.

Players who entered the portal include starters and key contributors such as Dez White, Isaiah Sy, Johan Munch, Gavin Marrs, Noah Amenhauser, Olavi Suutela, and Matija Samar.

Key Departures: The seven players leaving represent a significant roster overhaul for new head coach Justin Joyner

.Key Returner: Junior guard Josiah Lake II is the sole core player to announce he is staying in Corvallis.

Portal Activity: The NCAA transfer portal for men’s basketball opened just before these announcements, creating a busy recruitment period for the Beavers.Only one player, Josiah Lake II, has publicly committed to staying, while the seven mentioned players are seeking opportunities elsewhere.

  98. USAToday had AI do a mock draft, and a USC WR was selected three times in the first round by different teams. Ha! And many people act like AI is trustworthy on its face.

    • Here’s what AI revealed when I asked:

Early 2026 NFL mock drafts strongly project Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza as the No. 1 overall pick to the Las Vegas Raiders following a stellar 2025 season. Other top prospects frequently mentioned in the top five include Ohio State edge Arvell Reese, Miami edge Rueben Bain Jr., and Texas Tech edge David Bailey.

      Top 2026 Draft Prospect Projections
      1. Las Vegas Raiders: Fernando Mendoza, QB, Indiana
      2. New York Jets: Arvell Reese, EDGE/LB, Ohio State
      3. Arizona Cardinals: Rueben Bain Jr., EDGE, Miam
i4. Tennessee Titans: David Bailey, EDGE, Texas Tech

Top Prospects: Other high-ranking prospects include Safety Caleb Downs (Ohio State), LB Sonny Styles (Ohio State), and OT Francis Mauigoa (Miami).

    • I keep hearing about Jerod McCoy being the first or second db taken and likely a top 15 pick. Sounds like he had some really impressive pre draft workouts. Amazing he barely played at osu and one season at Tennessee two years ago and now he’s considered a top prospect. This is not according to AI but from listening to something called the AM radio.

      • And that’s with missing last year due to an ACL tear. I consistently see him projected in that 15-25 range depending on team needs, and usually first or second CB as you say.

      • Here’s one ranking from the top 100 players regarding position:

        “11. Jermod McCoy, CB, Tennessee

A torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered last January kept McCoy out of commission for all of last season and clouded his pre-draft process. But in a stellar pro day showing, the 6-1, 188-pound corner served up a reminder that he has all the trappings of a top-tier cover man. With superlative ball skills and ample tools to stick with receivers throughout their routes, McCoy can grow into a standout in any defensive scheme.”

  99. 6’1″ 180 lb CB TJ Crandall to return this season from broken foot:

” Defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre said Crandall has shown “excellent athletic ability” while working mostly as an outside cornerback on the left side of the field through seven spring practices.

“He showed some signs today of doing things and I’m really looking forward to watching him scrimmage and see how he does there,” MacIntyre said following Thursday’s practice. “He shows his explosiveness you see on film. Now I’m looking forward to seeing him go run and hit and go make plays on the play and get picks. Kind of take it to another notch and I believe he’ll do that.”

  100. Beavers basketball lands Big Sky Freshman of the year Jackson Rasmussen from Idaho. So one 2 weeks Joyner lands a top 6 freshman recruit of all time and an immediate impact sophomore. Crazy stuff from Joyner.

  101. Cal poly is currently 18-13 with 10-10 home and 8-3 on the road. Their RPI is 102′ and SOS is 112. They are 0-7 vs Q1 teams, 2-1 vs Q2, 5-3 vs Q3 and 11-2 vs Q4 teams.

As I recall, Cal poly hit the heck out of beavers pitching last season in one of the games down there beating the Beavs 7-6.

Hopefully, the Beavs can get a sweep but you never know….

        • They’ve started the 7’s portion of the Rugby season. Unfortunately, they lost the championship game in the Palouse 7’s tournament to the Quacks, 21-14, last week, and lost the championship game today at the Fool’s Gold tournament in Boise to Utah St., 26-21. Waiting to hear if they get an at-large bid to the National 7’s Tournament in Washington, D.C., in two weeks. They went 7-2 in both tournaments. Mckalk Jr scored 9 tries overall. Regarding football, it doesn’t sound like it. He said it’s hard to find walk-on information. He’s not sure they even hold walk-on tryouts any longer.

  102. Knotted at 2, b6.
Glassco and Singer each with an RBI,
Morris takes over from Dax after lightning delay looking good so far – 4.0 innings and 7 k’s.

  103. Roblez in for the t9, 6-3 Beavs. Let’s see if the hair factors in again!

UPDATE:Beavs win, Roblez gets 2 k’s and a ground out, the hair must be workin’

  104. Lock O the Beavs would be Altman retiring at UofO and Joyner taking their vacant HC position before ever coaching a game at OSU.

    • Duck fans can only wish but Altman is a future HOF coach and the ducks issue for MBB is football NIL and lack of commitment for the basketball NIL. Altman is about the only thing I like about the ducks.

    • That would be a very Luck O’ the beavs thing to happen. The only problem to that actually happening, in my opinion, is the Ducks’ own hubris getting in the way. I’m sure the ducks will want a top of the line coach or someone well established instead of Joyner who hasn’t been a D1 head coach yet.

      • Lanning wasn’t an established D1 head coach. The trend is young, highly organized and motivated coaches that can recruit, hand them a good to great roster….they could buy the talent for a young g guy like Joyner to win quickly, plus taking someone away from conference foe.

        • Same profile actually, young assistant from a National title team who is good with recruiting.
Plus they could get him for cheap since he’s on an OSU salary and neither he or his wife would need much of a commute.

    • meh, I think most people would be indifferent these days. At least I am. If we were in the same conference, yeah that would suck. But I don’t really even think of them as rivals anymore. Just another team in a different conference that happens to be close by.

  105. Listened to a Shepard booster event from yesterday(?).

Very good with the crowd. Talked about vision for team as 2) toughness, 3) accountability, 3) family.

Said OLine will set tone for toughness and spoke pretty highly of them , which surprised me.

Said players aren’t used to being held accountable and enjoy it. Gave example of a player that bobbled a catch, scored a 50 yard TD, and he criticized him for bobbling the ball and made him do pushups.

Talked about realities of NIL, and it’s positive implications (players helping siblings pay for college, players helping feed their families), and that OSU will just be a farm system without commitment to NIL, said he just came from a school that uses others as farm systems.

Crowd seemed to really enjoy him. Will see if donors respond.

  106. So the beavers website shows today’s game at 2:05 on the CW. I checked my online TV guide and it shows other programming along with NeckCar racing in the same time slot?

Does anyone know if the game will actually be on the CW or a streaming equivalent broadcast? Thx

  107. RPI settles in at #8.
Don’t forget, Beavs power this season was expected to be limited to a first baseman we’ve not fielded in a while…..enter Glassco.

Turns out that Josiah Lake’s brother who played for Tualatin and was apparently headed to play in Montana for the grizzlies has now committed to the Beavers! Keeping the legacy alive…..

      • 1
        1

Btw, Tualatin won the boys 6A title just a few weeks ago, and I think Lake was one of the top starters but I don’t think Tinkle recruited him before Tinks was fired.

  108. Pretty impressive stats for glassco since cracking the starting lineup:

Glassco continued the junior’s torrid stretch since making his first start at first base against Mercer on March 28. Glassco is 13 of 35 (.371) with five home runs and 14 RBIs over the 10 games since and Oregon State is 8-2 in that span.

  109. Did anybody read this Canzano piece?
Headline makes it sound like outgoing AD Barnes is now telling the MBB and Football coaches they have a bigger budget to work with regarding Rev share and they are able to spend at a higher rate than before to help build out their rosters. Not sure what changed since I can’t read the article. Wonder if it has anything to do with no longer sending 50%+ to Blueprint?
Anyway, good news for the coaches. Now they can waste a little more money than before just to ultimately get their top players poached every offseason.

What would your incorrect take about a miniscule deal (relative to actual NIL and revenue sharing) with Blueprint have to do with anything?

We will have an actual conference with actual conference distributions. We have new coaches driven by alumni forcing change, and those alumni are willing to invest up front.

When Guidry and Inoke left after two weeks, their salary schedule was reported to almost double in year two. So we’ve just been running lean for the last two years. The boosters who are giving now weren’t giving for coaches previous to now, unless they showed real results.

        • Nothing is hot. You presented an incorrect interpretation of something almost irrelevant in the NIL/revenue sharing aspect, and I simply responded.

The correct thing happened. BPS sells themselves as a software provider first. That’s where they make their money. The admin fees we would have paid would have gone to the three employees trying to negotiate NIL deals. So most of it would have gone to Bjornstad, which is apropos, given his institutional knowledge. The rest was a guaranteed $750k for NIL. That number probably wouldn’t be surpassed, making it free money. If it did, then the reporting of the numbers was also very incorrect. So even your posit of 50% at those higher levels is wildly incorrect.

          Thanks, O hacks who reported.

What is good is that we abandoned what is a legacy software provider for a homegrown provider based on a NVIDIA platform. So the long run aspect is both better, and it involves our wealthiest alumni.

I certainly don’t object to the outcome. I only object to people pretending the BPS deal is something it wasn’t, on top of it being a small part of the pie.

  110. t8 and Kmatz k’s the Mustang’s HR leader on what looked like a high “mistake” pitch.

Come from behind win improves the RPI to #7, big opportunity coming Tues vs nike (RPI 34).
Likely very rainy in Hillsboro, hope game can go in the books as W.

Not many chances to improve RPI after Tuesday, nice to see SC sweep their series this weekend, now cheer for Cal Poly and SC for a few more weeks!

      • And if you dont understand why? Unlike the entire SEC, Beavs have only played 2 games against quad 4 opponents and have only 1 bad loss (UW debacle)

      • Yeah, had to update after Nolan made the change.
How ’bout more specifics on “nothing to worry about” and “take care of business”?
Host a super? No more than 3 more losses? Something else?

Balance of sched includes 17 games vs teams with RPI over 100, nine of which are over 147.
Looks like most of the rest of the sched are quad 4. No?

        • 1
          1

Cal poly had an rpi that was pretty low too and as today’s broadcast team referenced, there are often unexpected results in an RPI ranking from week to week. Logically, I would agree with your assessment, however, sometimes logic is overlooked in RPI rankings.

          • 1
            1

CP was quad 3 and speculation was that a loss would have dropped Beavs RPI to 14.
Now Beavs face quad 4 series (6 of them, I believe).
But, still logic still doesn’t tell the whole story.

            Now, about SOS……………..

    • During today’s broadcast, the commentators did mention the RPI rankings sometimes offer a few unexpected results. I’m not sure about not many opportunities to improve on the RPI bc the Beavs split with WSU, a sub .500 and or didn’t really make a big difference in their RPI and then swept a lower RPI Lamar team on the road and the RPI improved a few spots.

I guess some of the changes result from the teams ahead of the Beavs in the RPI do so….

Looks like a sellout this week in Hillsboro.
Went last week for the home opener for the Hops and it wasnt sold out on a sunny/dry weekday despite being the first chance to see the new park.
Just a warning, the parking lot is no longer big enough for everybody attending games there, so arrive a little early or risk driving around a full lot with other frustrated fans. They oversold parking passes last week and people started parking on sidewalks and other makeshift spots.

Park is nice, but lots of room for improvement with concessions. They have alot more space to work with so it has potential to improve quote a bit.
Also, the outfield turf seating area is kindof cool how it’s perched above the bullpens.

        • Shoot I rarely attend baseball games so the possibility of a cancelation because of the rain hadn’t even occurred to me. That would be a bummer.
Since this is one off non-con game would it be unlikely to be rescheduled?

          • This late in the season it is likely to just be canceled. Not much room on the schedule and history shows mid-week games are almost always just canceled. Eventhough its the Ducks, mid week games just aren’t important enough. If they played the Ducks again I could see a double header but this is it. Hopefully they play because Beavs need an RPI boost with a win. Then again they haven’t been good in midweek games so might be hoping for a rainout.

  112. “Receiver Jesse Legree made a pair of long catches during the Beavers’ first spring scrimmage at Reser Stadium on Saturday.

Legree caught a long pass from Maalik Murphy and hauled in a touchdown from Brady Jones.

“(Murphy) broke the pocket and I had a deep ball over Harlem (Howard) and that was a great ball,” Legree said. “My first touchdown against Sean Craig, Brady threw a great slot fade ball to me in the back of the corner end zone.”

It’s a standout performance for the 5-foot-10, 167-pound Legree, who was a late addition to OSU’s recruiting class. Ranked No. 1,702 overall in last year’s class, Legree began his high school career playing cornerback and moved to receiver as a senior at Maryland powerhouse St. Frances Academy.

Legree said he’s worked with Mercer transfer Adonis McDaniel to improve his releases on routes and knows he has to improve as a blocker during the remainder of spring.

The scrimmage wasn’t only an offensive showcase though.

Cornerback TJ Crandall, who was intent on converting on opportunities for interceptions, picked off a pass and said there was a second towards the end of the scrimmage by an unidentified player.”

  113. A little surprised that Reagan Beers didn’t get drafted tonight. She was projected to be a late second to third round pick. ESPN has her as the 22nd best draft prospect which would have put her in the middle of the second. Understand she has some athletic limitations, but she seemed to be production both at OSU and Oklahoma. Maybe the Fire will sign her as an UDFA and give her a chance to make the squad.

    • She is not athletic and doesn’t run the court very well. She will most likely end up overseas and make more money going that route.

      • 9
        3

Most of them should go overseas instead of the submitting to the WNBA’s delusional approach. WNBA has never been more than a welfare program of the NBA and now ESPN is pushing it to the front page at all times. It isn’t a good product and all of the memes making fun of it are pretty accurate.

They nearly killed the golden goose when the entire league abused Clark for her rookie year.
Ridiculous LBGTQ nonsense runs the WNBA and makes it a laughingstock when coupled with sketchy refs and general thuggery as the norm. Oh wait, that is the NBA as well. Pro basketball in the US is not a watchable product.

        • “Pro basketball in the US is not a watchable product.”

So true. I think it may be gambling that sustains it?

The commissioner doesn’t even respect their own all-star game.

  114. Shepard note on first scrimmage:

“Shephard called out the short-handed offensive line on Monday for the struggles running the ball and inability to block edge rusher Takari Hickle.

“It’s to the point now where I might have to pull the guy out because I’m scared he’s going to hurt somebody because he’s getting back there so fast,” Shephard said. “Hopefully our O-line will step up to the challenge and block Takari Hickle at least once. Let’s start with one time and then we’ll move on to them doing it again.””

  115. Has there been ANY movement on the AD search? It’s weird how quiet its been since Barnes announcement. Interviews? A “list” put together by some journo?

    • A proven small forward is joining Oregon State.

DeShawn Gory, who averaged 13.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists as a freshman at Fresno State, committed to transfer to the Beavers on Tuesday.

    • With Gonzaga and SDSU in the conference, the roster building of Joyner, next season could be interesting and entertaining!

  116. Tonight’s baseball game has been cancelled (“postponed”) per email I just got. Says the schools are working to identify a new date, guess we’ll see.

  117. What’s the deal with Alan Thayer (usually a reliable poster on FB) asking for prayers about a baseball player? Is this tied to the rumor about someone falling out of a truck?

      • If it is a freshman pitcher, there are only 4 listed on the roster.
        2 hail from Washington
        1 from Lake Oswego
        1 from Huntington Beach, CA

Hoping it is just smoke and rumor but bracing for a tragedy. That Reddit thread hints that it is something pretty serious.

        • From OSU via Reddit:
Tyler Bellerose, a freshman pitcher, was recently involved in automobile accident resulting in a serious medical condition. We ask Beaver Nation to keep Tyler, his family and Beaver Baseball in your thoughts and surround them with support during this time.

(Unimportant in the grand scheme of things, but because this is the college baseball sub so the question will be asked … Bellerose had not appeared in a game for the Beavers this season)

          • It’s on the local news although I only saw his name is tyler and was involved on a car accident. I’m not a place where I get a strong signal for WiFi so could read the article although t was posted by KGW.

          • Posted @beavelbaseball twitter and dorman’s twitter account “An extremely emotional 24 hours. Belly we all love you and are praying for you and your family! Praying for all of our guys to come together and support each other! Praying to see Belly’s infectious smile again soon in the clubhouse and dugout!”

    • It was fun to see Cooks, Jackson, Hass, etc in the video. As I watched it I was feeling some confidence Shepard will get the program to respectable but then I quickly remembered he will have to develop new talent year after year.

I want to be as excited as you were initially, but I’m weary of coach-speak and rah-rah phrases at this point. In some ways, I expect another GA experience with a lot of talk and very little to show for it on the field.

I’ll be more excited as fall camp ends, but man, it is tough to be a Beaver fan and know that any player or coach who is slightly successful will bounce for a pay raise and more exposure.

Until the school regains respect and stable footing as a normal P4 type school, it will be a tough sell to get too hyped about any coach or player.

  119. Who has a list of the 2026-27 Mens hoops current roster? I am not finding much online other than on3. We have 10 outgoing transfers. I see only 4 incoming. I do recall something about a high school commit or 2? Josiah Lake II is the only player I’ve seen that is returning. Didn’t his brother also commit to OSU after decomitting from Montana? I am just curious what the roster for next year looks like right now and how many spots are still available. Bill????

    • Nevermind. That barf guy announced his TP move today so the boregonian spelled it out

“In addition to Lake, OSU has seven other players (three high school/junior college commits and four transfers) committed to its 2026-27 roster”

So the current roster stands at 8

      • Kind of funny how no one stays whether Tinkle is here or fired. Welcome to mbb in 2026 coach Joyner. Good luck. I hope he has better success actually keeping guys he brings into Corvallis.
Tinkle was good for bringing them but could never coach them or keep them. Robinson was great at bringing them to Corvallis, but couldn’t coach his was out of a paper bag. At least they stated for Robinson, but never improved either.

Wow Eddie Payne, Ritchie McKay, Jay John, Robinson, Tinkle… OSU has had some doozies for coaches over the last 30 years.

        • 2
          3

While I agree, at least the Stinkle did get us back to the tournament. Something the others could not do. I personally will always be thankful for that. Unfortunately he could not sustain off any successes.

Things have changed. While I personally wasnt happy with the Joyner hire, I do understand it isnt just about coaching anymore. So a different approach was necessary.

Could work. Might not. But at this point, what do we have to lose? Dont think the mens hoops program was making much money, if at all anyway.

Jack is right about some things in regard to Scott Barnes. Pun aside, there was no blueprint for this.

        • 1
          3

And one last thing. Im wasnt on board with the Joyner hire because I believe his only interest in the job was so he could be closer to his family.

He has zero allegiance to the university or Corvallis. But by the same token? That could also keep him here. So there is that.

I do hope hes successful and this works out for all parties

        • Looks like he can recruit some, and if he can coach, we at least have some entertaining hoops. Have to hope he can catch lightening in a bottle ala WT Elite 8 run every once in a while

  120. AD hiring committee:

“Among the committee members are five current OSU coaches including JaMarcus Shephard (football), Justin Joyner (men’s basketball), Scott Rueck (women’s basketball), Mitch Canham (baseball) and Tonya Chaplin (gymnastics). There is also one current athlete, Rebecca Kim of the women’s golf team.

They are joined by faculty athletics representative Colleen Bee; deputy athletic director/CFO and senior woman administrator Jacque Bruns; Nikki Neuburger, chief brand and product officer at lululemon; DeMonty Price, former president and chief operating, service and values officer at Restoration Hardware; Mark Reser, Reser’s Fine Foods CEO; and OSU Foundation president Shawn Scoville.”

“The hope is to have the new AD hired “in the next several weeks,” Murthy said, so they are positioned to begin as close to the July 1 launch of the new Pac-12 as possible and certainly in place before the football season.”

  121. I was certainly happy to see that Jenna Villa is staying with the Beavs WBB program. The Beavs WBB could be very, very good next season especially if they add another player with some length.

  122. Yabi Ablog officially signs:

“The 6-foot-10 Aklog is rated No. 128 nationally and No. 18 among centers in the class of 2026, according to the 247Sports Composite. He is the sixth highest-rated recruit in program history.

“Yabi is an extraordinary talent and one of the best high school prospects on the West Coast,” Joyner said in a release. “What makes him unique is his versatility — he’s a big who can facilitate from the perimeter or the block, which is extremely rare. Beyond his skill set and IQ, he brings toughness, feel, and a great approach to the game. He has tremendous character on and off the court.”

      • What’s your question? They now have 9 players on the roster or committed and last count 10 have hit the portal according to media reports. They only have 1 scholly player left on the roster. If Joyner’s wants to carry a full 15 player roster, he could add 6 players, however, some coaches don’t always carry the max amount of players.

I don’t think the beavers had any walk ons on last year’s team so……

          • So what’s your question? They have 9 players on the current roster. If they want to go with a full 15, they could add 6 more players if he decides to go with a full roster.

If you have a question about that comment, you need to be more specific about what your question is.

          • My original “huh?” question was short for “what the fuck does this mean?”

“Beavs MBB now have 9 players so I world they add at least another 4 players of 6 to the roster…”

            Thank you for translating

  123. Tyler Bellerose t shirt fundraiser. Google “ Facebook Tyler Bellerose t shirt”. Campaign to sell shirts to support injured OSU baseball player Tyler Bellerose and his long road to recovery. Shirts can be ordered, than picked up at Goss over next couple weekends. Go Beavs

    • He carried 15 on the team last year, so I’m hoping he signs at least 1-2 more players before the portal closes on Monday. As I recall, he signed a player or two on the summer last year so there must be another portal opening in the summer, but I don’t know if that’s changed from last season?

  124. Someone pointed out Reagen Beers didn’t get drafted. USAToday article includes her in top 3 undrafted players.

“Perhaps undersized for a center at 6-foot-3, Beers was a double-double machine for the majority of her college career, averaging 16.1 points and 9.7 rebounds per game across 129 contests with Oregon State and then Oklahoma.

Her 62.4% career shooting clip from the floor is the fourth-best all-time in the history of the SEC. In each of the past three seasons, Beers ranked inside the top 25 nationally in player efficiency rating, too.

And wherever Beers was, her teams won. Oregon State went to the Elite Eight with her as the frontcourt anchor in 2024, and Oklahoma has been a top 16 seed and made the Sweet 16 in each of the past two seasons.

    Beers was the Pac-12 Rookie of the Year in 2023, a two-time All-SEC selection and a one-time All-American.”

    • Hmm, Eite 8 run with OSU and crew, leaves, ends up settling for two sweet 16 bids instead of keeping the band together for a Final 4 or better run…at least she improved her draft status?

      • 3
        2

Exactly but according to media reports in the aftermath of the mass exodus in 2023, Beers did try to keep the core of the team intact. However, TVO was the driving force that drove a stake into of that team all bc she wanted to be with her boyfriend at USC who transferred from OSU football to USC.. Ever since that happened, I’ve placed the blame squarely on TVO. It’s all water under the bridge now.

  125. Inge starts at ss, Glassco in his rightful spot batting second. Iron man Galloway starts again, batting 8th, not quite the threat batting as earlier in the season when it was justified to put him earlier in the batting order.

1 hit after 6 innings but that lefty had a 59 Ks to only 6 walks coming into today. Beavs need to play some small ball to get him out of his rhythm.

  126. How did the Beavs lose the first game? Where’s the offense, and why were the bats so cold? Maybe it’s a mental thing with the team thinking about their teammate Tyler Bellerose? Thoughts?

    • 2
      3

The pitcher that CSF was a crafty lefty and going into the game he had 59 strikeouts to only 6 walks and when I saw that state before the game, I had a bad feeling. He was really good and Dax wasn’t his usual self the first three or so innings but settled in.

Their pitcher threw a lot of sliders and braking pitches that we never seemed to adjust to. He also had a funky windup and hid his pitches. He’s been a starter at CSF ,for 3 years.

  127. Shepard on the need for visibility:

“We want to have as much visibility as humanly possible,” Shephard said. “If there’s opportunities for us to have more visibility as a conference, whether it’s playing on some different days and whatnot to allow us to have some prime time opportunities away from other games that are going on, I’m going to let them know that my team is going to be willing to do that.”

“I want them to see the product that we have that makes Oregon State attractive or the Pac-12 attractive to other teams that may want to come join our league,” Shephard said. “I think that’s a big deal for us to say, ‘Hey, this is a great brand of football being played in our league. Come on back into this league, some of y’all who already left, and let’s redo this thing.’”

That last statement seems a tad optimistic. I know there’s more realignment in the future, but would be surprised if any teams came back to the Pac.

      • The TV money has to be there. Not sure that will ever happen. If it did, you’d see Cal, potentially Utah and Stanford take a hard look. Utah never been enamored with Big12. It wants to go BiG badly. Cal and the ACC makes no sense on any level, they’ll be traveling like crazy and hanging out in the bottom third of that conference forever while dealing with budget issues and a minuscule share of ACC revenue. Stanford a few more years of shuttling its team across the country and Stanford might get over itself and rejoin. Especially if Cal did l first.

But NONE of that will happen unless the PAC12 can start to generate similar TV money to the BIG12/ACC or at least the shares Cal/Stanford get.

Interesting story I heard from Wilner, NFL going back out to market soon. Expecting 50% increase in $. Another $6B ish Networks will die without the NFL, so they’ll probably get it. It will massively shrink the money available to go around to other sports pro and college. Expectation in the next college media rights negotiations (early 2030s) is the major networks will find a way to take care of the BIG / SEC but ACC/Big12 will suffer the most potentially leveling the playing field a bit.

Beavs MBB land former 4* guard from Buffalo averaged 19.8 ppg and started his career at Wisconsin. Sounds like another solid player.

OSU drops on RPI from #11 to #12 after winning 6-1 today. Hopefully the Beavs win the series tomorrow or they’ll drop further down

  130. Beavs Rugby update. The boys will be participating in the NCR National Rugby 7’s Tournament next Saturday in Washington, DC, as a 7th seed out of the West with a 9-4 record. They play #2, West Chester (some small schools put a lot of resources into Rugby). Unfortunately, McKalk Jr. has a hamstring injury and won’t be playing. 16 teams are selected at the D1A level.

  131. “Kennedie Shuler will complete her career at Oregon State.

The Beavers point guard announced she will be returning to OSU for her senior season in 2026-27.

An all-WCC first team selection, Shuler averaged career-bests with 12.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists this past season. She shot 47.3% from the field and 56.7% from the free throw line and also was named WCC defensive player of the year.”

56.7% from the FT line? Is that accurate? Glad she is returning though, like her D and think she could improve next year. Curious if the increase in WBB talent level over WCC will be noticeable?

    • Yes, the 56.7% is correct. That’s has always been her issue along with her perimeter shot. If she can improve those two areas of her game, she would be very difficult to defend bc of her first quick step and her ability to finish.

  132. Hayes starts in cf today, batting 9th. Talt returns to rf, Singer batting cleanup.

So, thoughts on which Beav arms you want to see today, keeping in mind the coming game vs nike?

Singer another big day with a 3-run shot, Beavs 6-0 b2 as the beaver bats are lively today with ,6 hits through 2 innings.

  134. Wow! Vance starts a 6–4-3 dp without touching the ball with his throwing hand. Shovels from glove after laying out to make the stop.
    End of t4, 6-0 Beavs.

  135. Beavs back to #11 RPI while the game is still underway.
nike currently 27 after going 2/3 at Ill. They’re the highest RPI on the rest of the schedule, be nice to win Wednesday and again on a re-scheduled game from Hillsboro.

UPDATE: After winning 10-2, Beavs remain at #11 RPI, any reason to think they’ll move from #6 in D1?
UP UPDATE: Beavs #12 again, while Auburn and Old Miss make gains and USC slips to 15…….too many moves, not worth following moment by moment.

They aren’t moving up, so the question is do they move down. I think an argument could be made for Auburn, FSU and A&M. My guess is #7 in the top 25 poll and 8 or 9 in the projected field. Unless some craziness happens, I think they need to be perfect from here on out to get a Top 8 and not loss a weekend series to get a host. Given the schedule, they can only hurt their case, while other teams improve their resumes.

This late in the season, the thing that moves the RPI the most are the where you win and lose. Road wins are worth twice as much as a home win. Home losses hurt twice as much as road losses. With only three road games left, losses at home will really hurt.

Good points both Ack, and Bill.
Only offset I see would be two wins over nike…..1 at home and 1 on a neutral site as a makeup for the cancelled Hillsboro game.

Beavs have little room for error no matter what.
They were given the benefit of the doubt last year with a super/regional top 8 seed and got to Omaha, even though we were somewhat skeptical of the committee. Perhaps because they made Omaha last year, they get another 8 seed this year in spite of a lower RPI or some bad losses along the way.

      Hopeful Ohiobeav…

      • They can only get into the top 8 if the teams ahead of them stumble. I don’t think they can pass enough teams even if they win out. But top 16 now does seem attainable. Still could only lose two or three games the rest of the way.

SEC is weaker this year with the LSU, Tennessee and Arkansas falling off, so I still think there is a chance. I was surprised last year that we got the respect from the committing, so maybe there is another pleasant surprise.

Last year we had a ton of things go our way with teams winning/losing games that gave us more Q1/Q2 wins than expected, that helped out our resume late, we don’t have those fringe wins this year.

    • Google AI tells me that in D1 college baseball, only one team since 1999 has been ranked in the final regular season human polls 6th or better and not been named a national seed. Texas A&M in 2015. It further says that if the BEAVs RPI stays under 20 and they stay in the top 6 in the human poles, they’re a lock for a national seed.

It also says teams ranked 7th or 8th in the human polls at the end of the season generally need to worry. Those teams quite often get bumped out of national seeding depending on their RPI & committee preferences.

We’ll see but maybe its not a dire as it sounds above.

We swept a Cal Poly team w that had a low RPI and still moved up in the RPI so I’m not sure that playing lower RPI teams the rest of the season, except Oregon, will have a negative impact on our RPI except if we lose. I think bc of OSU national championship pedigree, they get some respect they might not otherwise get. .

        • Cal Poly’s RPI is 84, not that low. OSU has 17 games left 13 @ home. 11 are q4 and the Average opponent’s RPI is 150. Currently our SOS is 38, by the end of the year it’s predicted to drop to 51. Predicted RPI shows if we win out, our RPI increases to 10, not lot of gain for 17 straight wins.

I think there is a case for a top 8 seed, but our resume won’t be any stronger than it is today.

          • Most thought the Beavs wouldn’t get there last year either but they did. I read that only once has a team been ranked in the top 6 in the national polls and not been a national seed. I guess we will see but certainly can’t afford anymore losses.

    Ty Simpson on Hoosiers’ D:

“From my point of view, I was like, they don’t do much,” Simpson said. “They do the same thing every down. So when I got the ball, I knew exactly what was going to happen. They just didn’t mess up, bro. They were in the exact same spot they were supposed to be. They were so well-coached.

“It was so much different than the SEC. In the SEC, they’ll play man, they’ll do these unorthodox coverages. That’s kind of how it is. That game was crazy to me. Of course, I got hurt. So that was a bummer. I knew what they were going to do. We couldn’t really run the ball, didn’t really throw. It was just so crazy to me how it happened.””

The Indiana D coordinator said Indiana knew “everything” Alabama was doing in the Hoosiers’ lopsided 38-3 win in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal.

I do think there is something though to just keeping it simple, being in the right position, and tackling well. Of course you can’t just be physically over-matched, but I hope this staff takes a simple, well executed approach.

I just read where Okl state got a significant infusion of NIL $$$ and the #2 scorer in WBB in the nation transferred from.Iowa State for a reported $500k…

If Ok State got a huge wad of NIL $$$, I would expect football and basketball will experience a quick turnaround.
