I find it interesting that two coaches we've mentioned repeatedly on this site could wind up going to foes. Especially interesting is Leach…when I mentioned him in 2009 people called me crazy. Well, maybe, but someone is going to get a great offensive mind on the cheap. And I don't see Riley or Banker containing a Mike Leach offense, should that happen.
Meanwhile, OSU staying put for now. No rumors, no changes, everything is fine…
I’d be happy for washington state if that is the case. Pac 12 will have some solid coaches in coming years. We probably won’t however.
Imagine Rich Rodriguez (read option), Mike Leach (Air Raid), and Sumlin (Spread/Air Raid)?? Plus UCLA will have a new coach…I’m sure he’ll be a big name, too. OSU will not only be stuck with Riley and company, but by locking themselves up for eternity, they lost an opportunity to get a young, innovative coach in Sumlin. Hiring him could have been a Chip Kelly moment for OSU.
Option Read, Air Raid, Spread…which is why I like college football less and less every year.
Why is it that ? These ideas and systems will be incorporated into pro football in 5-10 years, Though the pro game has a much higher level of skill and talent, college and even high school ball is much more innovative and interesting. There is so much money invested in the pro game that they resist change, can’t afford to experiment. Pro football is like watching reruns.

If Riley must go, why Leach? His on field accomplishments are barely a notch above Riley at three times the price tag. He made it to the Holiday bowl, but that’s a measure for failure in a 9 year tenure on this site. He also managed to go 4-4 or 5-3 in conference most of his 9 years at Tech. He’s a best a flashy Mike Riley whose only value is the initial buzz around the program that the change would bring and the joy of scoring 60 instead of 45 against weaker preseason opponents when the offense is rolling.
We need to stay away from flashy names that generate empty press. Remember all the Erickson hype four games into the season? Look instead to our basketball team and the football team down the road. Who the hell was Chip Kelly? Identifying his ability and making the decision to bring him to Eugene is on par to finding and signing James Rodgers. And who the hell was Craig Robinson, other than step brother to a national political candidate? But it seems like he is for real, unlike the ‘Zona marquee of Jay John. If we are really so broken that Riley can’t fix it how is a Leach going to walk in and have us in the Holiday bowl in 2 years? Especially since he was never accused of fielding Banker shaming defenses. Forget the expensive band-aid, find coaching talent, and preferably a hungry one.
The other option is to shore up our “NFL” cred by bringing in a coach that blue chip players believe will get them to the next level, which is essentially an opposite to the flashy college coach: you want a guy who has name recognition, at least in football circles. That was part of both Erickson’s and Riley’s success this past decade and surely played a huge role in Stanford’s dramatic turnaround under Harbaugh. Riley has been out of the league now for a decade so his experience with what it takes to play at the next level may be wearing off too with kids in their late teens. But Riley does have a strong connection to the Harbaugh family. If Banker/Langsdorf are the necessary move Riley should look to the NFL for replacements.
If Riley must go, why Leach?
At this point, I’m not sure I/we want Leach or someone like Leach who isn’t Mike Riley. For WSU, he’s a good hire. They’d get a great offensive coach for cheap.
Sumlin would probably be the perfect hire for OSU. I know, I know, it’ll never happen/we’re stuck with Riley until we die.

He is something beyond denial and delusion and appears to think he really can be a winner with his present methods. Sorry, but OSU is stuck with Bobby, Mike, and the bunch for a long, long time, I fear.
Just for clarification. Craig Robinson is Michelle Obama’s brother. That makes him Barack’s brother-in-law.
A couple of notes, Leach did make the Cotton Bowl (in a season when they honestly deserved a BCS bowl).
Mike Riley didn’t find James Rodgers at all, a friend of his who coaches a JC found him.
I don’t think “NFL cred” matters in a coaching candidate. Some of the greatest coaches at the collegiate level don’t have it nor do they have systems that put guys in the NFL. You just need a winner at the collegiate level.

You are looking at Riley as he used to be, not how he is now. We arent complaining about the old Riley, just the new one, who clearly no longer cares about winning and puts little effort in to doing so.
Who was Chip Kelley? An unknown who was innovative. Thats who you hire when the job has gone dead with your current personnel.
Yup, It’s all wishful thinking, Riley already has another year to turn it around. I just hope he does not run it into the ground. This feels a lot different than 2005.
Katz given his release (big surprise), no word from him on where he is going, but he’s going somewhere.
DE going to either retire or be fired from ASU, won’t coach the bowl game. I wonder if things would have been different if Dennis had kept his ass in Corvallis like he often has said he wished he had?
Did anybody else think it was kind of weird that even though the game was clearly over in the third quarter they still didn’t give McCants a single carry in his final collegiate game?
I thought it was kind of cold, but I guess the same could be said of Catchings not getting to run at least one pattern. It was nice for McCants to get into the stats with a recovered fumble.

Not a Catchings or McCants fan but I agree, it is brutally cold. It is kind of a facade the whole nice guy thing. Its not like this is a rarity for him. He did it to Katz too (although Mannion was the right guy, Katz deserved better).

He should go to Wisconsin. They need a QB and they run the same basic offense. Only they have a kick ass O-line and real running backs. That would suck for both of my schools.

Seems like Riley fell in love with the 6’5″ coach’s kid, and was looking for ANY excuse to kick Katz to the curb. A bad half was that excuse.
The fact that he then USED him against Wisconsin is was really gets me. Give him the start, but just let him hand off? Then put him in for a few sporadic plays later? What the hell sense does that make?
Riley handled it the worst way possible, and never apologized or explained it to anyone.

How is going with the better QB (Mannion) a shaft to Katz? That’s the way it works.
Mannion is not better. He is just younger with more eligibility….and more pi’s to td’s at this point in time. I am not a Katz supporter. Katz has been at OSU 4 years and Mannion 2 years. But Mannion had 2 years of professional tutoring before hitting campus. Many of the guys who have used the qb gurus in high school end up reaching their ceiling between sophomore and junior years.
Mannion’s not better? All he did was throw for the 3rd most yards in OSU history. With an awful o-line. No run game to provide balance. And Danny Langsdorf as his OC. As a Freshman no less.
Mannion played behind the same line as Katz. Third most yards, 1st in interceptions, way down the list in touchdowns, way down the list in victories/defeats. Your description of Mannion is a dead ringer for Nate Longshore. Lot’s of yards, passing attempts and completions, very few wins. He can’t move well enough and the offense can’t change enough thru half rolls, roll outs, 3 step drops to ever protect him sufficiently. He has some very good characteristics and I admire his courage in the pocket. But his ceiling is limited. If you outlaw blitzing against OSU then he would have a chance. But honestly, if you are a defensive coordinator in the PAC 12, you will be able to contain the danger presented by Mannion today, tomorrow and 3 years from now.
If Mannion can significantly reduce his turnovers (interceptions and fumbles), he’s going to be a great QB — much better than Katz ever was, or ever will be. But that’s still an “if” at this point.
Multiple factors contributed to Mannion’s high turnover numbers this season. The lack of any run game made it easy for defenses to scheme against the Beavers, and to stack defenses against the pass. The lack of any run game also led to many 3rd-and-long situations, leading to forced passes and interceptions. Poor play by the OSU O-line often put Mannion under severe pressure. And of course Mannion — as a first-year QB — made his share of bad reads and ill-advised passes.
All of this should improve next season. We’ll see. If not — if the turnovers continue — then it will be fair to question whether Mannion is the right guy after all.

I was reading the Cliff Kirkpatrick article, it implies that Katz will talk at some point, but who knows if he will have any insight. Just watching last years games, I did not feel that he was a very inspiring on field leader, but I guess with that O-Line, sometimes you are just trying to survivie.
That would be bizarre to have Katz coming to Corvallis next year in a Badger uniform. I am sure Riley has already give Chryst all of Katz’ shortcomings, so I don’t think that will happen, but it would make a hell of a story.
Only thing my alma maters did this year was get opposing coaches fired. Zook fired at IL after we dominated them. Stadium was less than half full. De Careless is Steve Jobs compared to the bozo

Oh, did Zook get the axe? I watched a little bit of the 4th quarter of that game and Zook looked like a zombie on the sideline. I guess he was a walking dead man at that point.

I don’t get bashing Riley for being soft, golly gee guy and then in the next breath he is cold for not letting players who have proved to him to not be a viable option at their position. it would seem that is the character is opposite of each other. Riley made some tough decisions and he is capable of them. However, I will say I never understood why he didn’t go with McCants as part of a Jumbo goaline package. I think he just never got past some of the early fumble problems he had, much like Agnew has had as well. In fact, I think Agnew’s days as a RB are numbered.
I would love to see us hire Stoops or Zook as our DC, both are decent recruiters with good experience. Neither one wouuld take that job and neither will have an opportunity, but just for argument sake. I also would like to see us bring Erickson in as Assoc Head Coach and take over the play calling or at least help us recruit.
The other thing we need is more revenue, the teams that recruit well all have stadiums of over 70,000. I know several on here have said they won’t renew their donations, but I think the opposite is needed we need to give more so that we can have more revenue designeated to recruiting, because when it really comes down to it, we don’t have the talent that other programs have, so bringing in another isn’t about scheme is about getting the talent level up.
So you’re doubling your BASF contribution next year right? Better make it a big one to make up for my serious reduction for the second year in a row.
You bash Riley for those things because he is weak in both aspects. In general, he seems to show no strong personality to his players, to bolster the fact that he wants them to adopt and believe in his football schemes. Then in particular, when a tiny bit of compassion for someone who has done their best, is needed, as with Katz, he gets bent over a chair instead.
In total, he appears to be a muttonhead.
This can be seen in games, at instances when good clock management is needed …and is lacking. Or in being totally predictable in play calling.
As to needing revenue to recruit well, thats baloney. Otherwise, sites like Pullman, Washington would never have good teams. Riley has done a bad job of it, bottom line. His weak personality and lack of innovation probably has something to do with it.

The NCAA denied Hardin’s medical hardship appeal. I’m not sure if this is good news or bad news…probably neutral. It opens a scholie for (potentially) someone better, but it also depletes the depth chart.

Hardin denied? WTF? How does James get a hardship after playing several games but Hardin doesn’t after his very short season? After James’ injury last year I studied the medical hardship rules and thought I understood them but apparently not.

All coaches will be back, one fucking day after our worst season in 15 years? Riley will NOT be looking at this season in a realistic way, if he has made that decision already. I’m fucking fed up now.
And to Beaverkman, yes Riley’s decision to give McCants no touches, ever, was completely insane. We used about nine running backs this year, but not McCants? That makes no sense. Just like benching a good QB with tons of potential and experience, after one half of one bad game.
But back to the main point, Riley is living in his own world right now, where there were no coaching problems, only young players that weren’t good enough. Of course, the reason those young players had to play so much was horrid recruiting, but that probably wasn’t his fault, either.
What other school in the NATION would have a 5 win season, then a 3 win season, and retain ALL of their coaches? None. Must be nice having a lifetime contract.

i really cant fathom the coaching staff as we know it being back for next year. its almost insulting. even if you in your heart of hearts believe that THIS group is going to bring a satisfying amount of wins and success (whatever that is for you, and when i say you i dont mean bdc i mean riley), you then at least should feel obligated to make changes to appease the core of a withering fan base that still would like to stay strongly supportive of the program. it just doesn’t make any sense. it just makes me wonder so many different things.
Leach would be good here.. he is very much a blue collar worker and can recruit.. the measuring stick his last few years was against Texas, Oklahoma and Ok State…. not exactly reality.. he would never have back to back failing teams here-

I know alot of coaches got fired today… some deserved to, some did better than us and still got fired… I don’t know how you fire Dennis and Paul , yet keep us… we not only failed in coaching the games, but failed to recruit- If this was a company that lost big $$ 2 years in a row, I would not be here, thank goodness I signed a really great contract, and the school is too broke ( I have helped them stay broke ) to fire me.

Yesterday, Mike Riley told reporters, “I’m going to look at this thing real hard and try to be … realistic and try not to look at it too much with rose-colored glasses.” Today MR apparently told reporters that all of this year’s OSU coaches would be back next season.
What’s up with this? Did MR’s alleged hard look really take less than 24 hours? Or did MR’s hard look exclude his coaching staff? Most likely it’s the latter — MR never even considered firing Banker and/or Langsdorf, despite the awful numbers put up by their units this year (and last year, too).
So there we have it. MR has no intention of holding Banker and Langsdorf accountable for results. And it appears that BDC is fine with this (and is therefore complicit in the same gross mismanagement). A system where no one is held accountable for poor performance is a system practically guaranteed to perform poorly. Happy Holidays from Ed Ray, Bob De Carolis, and Mike Riley…..

Coaches, including riley, don’t usually make any real personnel/player decisions immediately after an emotional loss. Riley’s announcement tells me he was never contemplating real change, and probably that CW loss wasn’t emotional because he knew he couldn’t compete. If accurate, both are unacceptable
At this point, I can’t figure out if Riley is delusional or if he thinks the talent upgrade/improvement is enough to get eight wins next year and shut us all up.
When people have FU money, you can never be quite sure where their heads are at with their decision making.
Last year, Bronco Mendenhall fired his DC after a loss to Utah St. BYU does not lose to Utah St., so someone had to go. Riley should have fired Langsdorf last year after the Wazzu loss based on the same principle.
Yup, agree with not being able to know where their heads are at when people have FU money. Dare we hope that, in a repeat of the “Katz is the glue” then “Katz is gone” fiasco MR actually ends up making a coaching change in the next several months?

Riley is stubborn, he is not going to change his core coaching beliefs. I think he is counting on Mannion throwing less interceptions, maybe Wynn and Crichton taking another leap and becoming dominate. O-line improves a little. Maybe that gets you six or seven wins. In the end, this team was not Wazzu 2009 bad. There were three games where they were significantly out talented. The others they were out coached, schemed, prepared, whatever the hell you want to call it. I think Riley is rolling the dice a little for 2012, we will see if it costs him his job.

I had been reading on this site that Katz would go to an FCS school, because he would have to sit out a year at D-1. But some have implied he could be here in a Badger uni. Does a release from OSU let him play D-1 next year?
Katz can’t go to a FCS school. He would need I believe at least 2 years of eligibility remaining to do that. Once he graduates he can transfer to an FBS school and play immediately because of a loophole. He just needs to become a graduate student. Kentucky and Wisconsin are schools he’s rumored to possibly go to. I don’t know where he will end up but it won’t be a Pac-12 school.
I think Wulff should get at least another year.
He really got a huge shit sandwich when he took over that team. Makes you wonder if Moos has already talked to Leach. If Leach has said he’ll come to WSU maybe Moos is striking while the iron is hot so he doesn’t lose an opportunity at a good coach?

Jake Cookus, ex-Beav DB currently co-defensive coordinator, dbs and special teams coach at Weber State will be looking for a new opportunity. Current Head Coach Ron McBride has been “asked to retire”.
It is sad to see the rag tag responses here on this forum. But it reflects Beaver Nation as a whole. A frustrated bunch who complains but to lazy to do anything about it. I for one have and are doing as much as I can. I email important contacts at OSU every day, including the Daily Barometer, Presidents office, BASF office, other donation offices, Corvallis and Albany newspapers and fellow Beaver fans and friends asking them to do the same. There is no use sending email to BDC or football staff, they just delete everything they receive each morning.
The big difference between Beaver Nation and the U of O duck fans/donors, is they would not have waited this long to do something. Emails to U of O contacts would be flooding in by the tens of thousands every day. They would get media coverage instantly reporting on TV, cable, satellite and radio, their unhappiness with the situation. Beaver Nation will continue to complain on forums and wait for someone else to do something. Sad isn’t it.
Unless there is individual and some kind of organized effort by Beaver Nation to place pressure on OSU, we will continue to live with Riley, BDC and gang.
Why are Riley and BDC not making any changes? Because they know Beaver Nation will not stand up and fight……..look at our track record…….it should have been done last year……but we accepted mediocrity didn’t we.
Do you guys know what would happen if a Angrybeaver day were called on the OSU campus and 10,000 fans show up, with Oregon wide media, to demand changes, including getting rid of BDC and Riley? National coverage of the event, then things just grow larger until the power at OSU breaks. Thats how things happen. Not sitting on our arses.
We can say all the bad things about Duck fans, but you all know they would not tolerate failed coaching or their football program as long as Beaver Nation has. Look at what is happening at the U of O over the dismissal of their University president. They are going to have a rally on campus to force re-instatement of the president. They have media, emails and much more pressure measures in progress. See, duck people do something.
While I applaud you for your efforts – “I for one have and are doing as much as I can. Since I agree with you that emails don’t work I’ve written letters (no rants) to BDC with my concerns for the past 2 years and guess what? Not one single reply. That doesn’t mean I’ll stop but that just proves to me that the AD department has no clue what customer/alumni service is, let alone branding or marketing (I’ve given my 2 cents on how I believe the program can improve in this area as well). I live overseas and have had up to 4 seats with the customary BASF donation for a few seasons but I’ve got to really think about it going forward. I love OS and especially football but I have no belief in the current administration and haven’t for some time now. Riley’s “not contemplating any change” is denial, arrogance, stupidity all wrapped in one. Even BDC had to cringe a little reading that quote…
Anyway, maybe you’d be kind enough to lead us so that real change comes about? Whatever I can do from my location I’d be happy to assist. Lemme know.
Hi David, I’m not saying no one is doing what they can, but I hope you agree that most are not. I think each and every one of you that are contacting people who might listen to our concerns are doing a great job.
First we need a leader and organizer. Not me, I get in too much trouble. Someone with a recognized name within the State who can put things together. I know a forum member knows one of the Oregonian sports writers. He might know someone who can help us. Another avenue to finding a long-time alumni member who wants to take the project on. But we need to find a leader. So lets try to gather ideas as to who or how we can find one.
To start, if we can raise just enough money for newspaper adds in Portland, Salem, Corvallis, Eugene, etc., asking for support, providing proper email addresses, and what we want to do, the word would be state wide. Organize a rally on campus asking “state wide” participation by fans, alumni and students. Boy, can you imagine this on state wide TV or even ESPN?
Let me tell you something, the power is with us if we can organize. Power is in numbers and numbers CAN DO ANYTHING. OSU does not want negative publicity and “Beaver Power” is what can change what we needs to be changed. Yes, lets call it “Beaver Power”……that would put the scare into BDC’s panties.
I, for one, really like the newspaper ad idea. I don’t live in Oregon anymore and wouldn’t know where to begin, but I would contribute a small amount – as I think others might. I hope it would add up and a significant ad would result – I suppose in the Oregonian.
PS. I notice the Athletic department sends at least a form letter when it receives a contribution, but refuses to acknowledge other correspondence.
helmsley, I noticed that you are in Montana. Are you keeping an eye on Jonathan Smith? Any observations as relates to his ability to move to OC in the PAC12??
I’m a Montana State graduate, so I pay more attention to that team. And . . . I couldn’t begin to evaluate Jonathan Smith’s capability to coach anywhere, much less PAC12. It should be noted, however, that the Bobcat-Grizzly rivalry game, just past, was supposed to be handily won by the Bobcats but the Grizzlies whipped them 36-10.
Montana State just refurbished their football stadium and built an additional grandstand with the assistance of a $500,000 anonymous donation. Winning matters!

Any thoughts on who that person(s) might be? I would imagine that having someone with some “juice” makes sense (not that you don’t!) to lead the charge. As I said in my earlier post I’m overseas like Helmsley so on the ground “operational” support would be challenging. But lemme know if you can think of something that I can contribute from 17 time zones away:). Happy to do so.
In regards to your idea of a full page ad, what would the headline say? For example, “Beaver Nation Demands Change!” Also, would everyone behind it be OK with listing/signing names or is that going overboard? Have other programs done something like this? Would like to hear your ideas on the matter. I’m open to contributing in some manner.
I understand that it’s not written in stone that absolutely no changes are to be made but to be candid I had a feeling MR would stick with the status quo. If he was pushed by the beat writers on whether or not staffing changes were on the horizon I would’ve hoped that he’d at least say something like “we’re evaluating everything.” I’m sure that they’re “good folks” but c’mon, that’s basically saying efu and don’t go there.
By the way, do you post or subscribe to other OS boards? I check most of the free sites and am a member of two pay sites. Just wondering.

Hey! As long as we’re stuck with Mike Riley as coach, we deserve his assistants. I don’t think all is lost on him. The Eggers article was decent. But what is lost on him is the ethos stated by his own college coach. Bear Bryant once said that he will not hire people who are not smarter than he is. He had no use for people who couldn’t add to his program. Maybe Riley should think about that rationale.

It’s what I’ve been asking… begging… for years. I noticed they did it successfully against Nikegon a couple times. If Banker is bright enough to look at the tape and see that his gap cancellation doesn’t work anymore but that the 3-4 did work, then I could accept him remaining if he FINALLY changes it up and shows the world that he can do more than draw a paycheck. I’m pissed that it took years of regression culminating in just about the worst year possible for any of our coaches to realize that their scheme and preparation both suck on defense.
I also noticed that Josh Williams and Donnell Welch looked good on Saturday in limited action. They were pleasant surprises when they were on the field… a little raw, but fast and tough. Williams should have been inserted LONG AGO. But I preach to the choir.
As stated before, we all know this program will get back to eight or nine win seasons soon enough. And the pollyannas will say “I told you so” while we continue to say that eight or nine wins is our plateau and proof that we will settle for mediocrity over excellence. I would love for the current coaches to succeed beyond our wildest dreams and actually make it to the Rose Bowl. Maybe that way some unsuspecting program out there will hire some of them away. But until then… there are always other Beavs sports I can attend which don’t require me carrying a rain jacket and dressing in layers.

2. Riley talks about JUCO prospects… one O-lineman and some d-linemen and LB’s. We already know the Mt. SAC kids are on our radar, so pulling them in would add instant production. But who are the LB prospects?
Of course, if we’re going to a 3-4 D then d-linemen like Austin Flynn would be considered OLB’s… as would Crichton and Wynn. Those two would be monsters in a zone blitz. Oh please, please, please go to 3-4 more often. We have the perfect personnel going forward. And the Mt. SAC kids would only add to it. Can you imagine the three-front consisting of Salt, Thompson and Masaniai with Crichton and Wynn coming from the 5-teq’s?

I was reading the AZ Republic last night and they said Erickson will get half of his remaining contract. Were they just a little smarter in Tempe or is it possible with another banner season Riley could get the same deal?
My guess: Langsdork is reassigned as QB coach only, Riley takes over play calling, Locey helps with the defense, Brennen coaches the TEs.
I agree that Riley will take over play calling, and I suppose at this point it’s the best we can hope for. We all know he doesn’t have the nuts to get rid of one of his pals and regardless of what he says you know he hears the pundits talking about him and his staff. There’s no way somebody can sit back and do nothing when he’s in charge of a team that is currently 8-16 the last two years and currently coming off of a 3-9 season. Hopefully it’s obvious to him now that he needs to have a much more hands on approach (ie. calling his teams plays again).

Without external pressure, this may indeed be “the best we can hope for”.
With external pressure (from donors, from campus rallies, from email/fax campaigns) perhaps more can be achieved. Are OSU donors, fans, and boosters finally angry enough to rise up and generate the pressure needed to force change?
In this regard, Riley may have miscalculated by announcing so hastily that his entire staff will be coming back. By doing so, Riley said “F-off” to the fans, donors, and boosters who are unhappy with the status quo. Riley has told the world that he doesn’t believe he or his staff is accountable to anyone, and that he believes BDC and Ed Ray will let him and his staff do whatever they want.
This is arrogance. Arrogance REALLY gets people angry. Maybe angry enough finally to do something….
why say Brennen coaches the TE’s? in addition to the WR’s?
I don’t know if Brennen is up to it, but if he is, give him both responsibilities. There’s not much difference between teaching a WR and TE to catch/block. A little but not enough that there needs to be a specialist/coach dedicated to that one position. Does any other college team do this? Seems the Beavs have too many coaches. Anyway, Locey is probably the best coach on the staff, and a jack of all trades–he would be better used helping the defense.

How about a quick preview of something without all the doom-and-gloom of the football team. What do you think about Montana against the Beavers on Sunday?
I can’t get a good handle on Montana. They go and lose to North Dakota on the road, then they come home and beat a good Long Beach team. They’re so up and down right now that I hesitate being worried about them, but I know they can jump up and bite us if we’re asleep at the wheel. Brian Qvale is gone, so their interior offense and defense have all but disappeared. Will Cherry is really good. I don’t know why nobody other than Tinkle was willing to give him a ship. And they have a young wing, Kareem Jamar, who can get it done on both ends.
It’s a game we should win pretty handily, and I think the Beavs are looking to do so after last year’s loss in Missoula. They already know this Montana team, and they should be in their faces all game. If I had to guess, I would say that each team scores about their averages for the season… 81 for us and 67 for them. I think they’re a team who just isn’t together enough to feel comfortable on the road.
I saw that game last year and Qvale just stood by the basket and put in feeds. CR didn’t seem to get it. Derek Selvig, is 7′, 230# but doesn’t look strong. I don’t think he’s as good as Qvale but if Will Cherry is on, watch out. Wayne Tinkle is an astute coach and CR had better be on his toes (literally).
I think the Beavs will get a good test, and I trust they will prevail, but I’m not going to bet on it.
Zona has played a decent schedule, but I don’t think they look like world beaters. They usually get better as the season progresses though. Utah is beyond godawful, people in SLC are asking where win #2 is going to come from? This is the year for the Beavs to strike hard!
The Zonies are young. And with that youth comes some real talent. But there’s also turmoil on their team with a couple of those youngsters being disciplined for breaking team rules. Sidiki Johnson’s career at Arizona looks like it’s over before it began. And Josiah Turner was suspended for one game.
Miller’s having fits trying to get his team to act like one. I don’t know how much they get better as the season wears on. He’s clearly not happy with the production his veterans are giving him. And the frosh aren’t altogether into the system yet.
Nick Johnson is scary good. I don’t like the idea of facing him too much in the future. We get a break facing them early, but I don’t like that it’s on the road. Coach Rob schemes well against them, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

My opinion is that OSU was within 1 game of the Rose Bowl because the fringe/peripheral teams were all down those years. The conference has improved since 2009…a lot of it due to coaching (though, the best coach, Harbaugh, recently left). It looks to be getting stronger with the recent firings/hirings, too.
I wholeheartedly agree with you Jason. One win away from the Rose Bowl means you didn’t get there! Do the polyannas have such an inferiority complex that’s the best they can come up with to defend Riley?
Lastly, and I have to say this, I want a coach that’s actually engaged before, during and post game. I’m not advocating for a psycho like Stoops but our coach looks and acts like he’s flatlined. The Riley defenders are always coming up with “you don’t really know what goes on behind closed doors…” excuse. Does he happen to have a two personalities – one for the locker room and one on for the field and in public situations? Do we honestly believe that? I can’t think of a FBS coach that stands alone on the sideline – sometimes 50-60 yards away from his team – with his arms crossed, headgear on looking like he would rather be taking a casual a walk through the MU. Same can be said with his post game interviews which isn’t really even coach-speak. The beat writers are far too easy on him but even when a he gets a semi hard question he responds by saying “I really like this team.” I know you like the team coach but you just got crushed by your rival for the fourth straight year. “Yeah, I can’t wait for spring practice to roll around.” Is that all you have to say? “Our offense went backwards and I’m not contemplating any staff changes…” Am I missing something???
Sorry, but IMO we won’t ever make the Rose Bowl with Riley. Truly sad.

With the “cleansing” that is going on with underperforming P-12 coaches, I wonder if this puts MR under the microscope more than he is going to like next season? I don’t think Embree is going to get any heat until season three, so I would think the media would pounce on the “Riley turnaround”.angle Who knows, maybe nobody will care.

Mike Parker brought up a good point on the show: with all these other teams looking around after already firing coaches, are there enough coaches to fill the already empty slots? In other words, too many chiefs have already been beheaded, so the Beavers would be behind all the other “Indians” at the moment. I was willing to give MR one more year until what was just published: he said there will be no coaching changes, if he’s calling the shots, flatly. He’s not even going to look at it. Well, Mike, if you aren’t willing to realize that your coordinators suck, I’m not willing to give you any more lead time. Either you beat the Ducks and win the Pac-12 next year, or you’re gone. It’s that simple. Make Titles or Make Tracks.

Well guys, I tried but I have to give up. i believe Beaver Nation is in worse shape than the OSU football program. There is no desire or motivation to do something to change what has happened to football at OSU. The football program has failed due to the defunct leadership of BDC and Mike Riley. Mark my words, things are not going to get much better nor is Riley going to change. He knows Beaver Nation is a stagnant force and nothing will be done. There must be too many Riley lovers and others who just complain but do not really care. So live with failure, the future will get darker.
The reason other Pac Universities are making decisive changes is because they are pro-active in their thinking and pressure is being placed on the said University from fans/donors to make these changes. Beaver nation is dead, no pressure, no nothing. We will be left behind in the dust while other Pac 12 teams start to re-build and be contenders.
Believe what I say, under Rileys leadership, nothing will change and he is incapable of reaching anything but a low end toilet bowl if lucky. That’s what you want, that is what you will get.
Riley is thumbing his nose at Beaver Nation, its fan base, donor base and students, because he knows they will accept his mediocre football and do nothing but complain….thats all.

Dude, this entire site is a way for fans to get organized in numbers, get heard, and force action. We have petitions all the time. I talk with the Oregon media at times. Do you think Riley fires Newhouse if fans weren’t upset? Do you think he fields questions about his assistants? The writers at the Oregonian read this site. They take sentiment from it and put it in print. I’m not saying we’re the cause of all change, but there’s a voice here, and it’s not ignored.
Now, are you talking about organizing in-person and storming campus? I am all for an #occupyReser where fans picket and demand results. I’d back that and let you promote it here. There’s nothing stopping you from making a website/FB page and getting started on that.

sorry, just a comment on how few die hard beaver fans are out there who actually care to blog and read blogs about their team. this is still the best beaver fansite on the net currently. Reser holds 45K+ and has about 50 sections. That’s about a 900 person average per section. Maybe there are 900 readers, but this guy ain’t reaching more than 30 of them if he posts for a few hours on a weekday. This guy is thinking it’s a failure that he couldn’t wrangle 10,000 AngryBeavs fans to storm the campus and demand change within the course of a random Monday morning.
I have to say that I think that this is the best OS fan site. Some of the others are just too club-like and you kinda get killed if you say anything realistic or give constructive criticism without a crap load of footnotes. Way too serious.

Weren’t you trying to rally people together like five hours ago on this site? You already gave up on Beaver Nation as a whole within that five hours? I’m not saying I don’t agree with a lot of what you’re saying, I just find the timing and your complete 180 kind of amusing.
I think our best hope for getting Riley out in acceptable fashion is to force Riley to hire a new OFC or DFC and then promote them to HC and Riley to AD…eventually… it is what the Ducks had to do with Belotti. It took the Ducks a long time to get rid of Belotti.. so we should not expect much more from our administration. When you have a well liked head coach.. this is often the sort of tactic that needs to be used. So from the outside it looks like this nice friendly thing. I mean we didn’t really hear what happened with Belotti until well after he was gone.
Why did the Ducks get rid of Bellotti? He was a pretty consistent winner, and had Chip Kelley as his OC.
I always thought there was a skeleton in the closet somewhere in that situation. Maybe he didnt like the Lyles connection and wasnt going to go for it?
Anyway, this proclamation by Riley REALLY SUCKS. The least he could do is change a couple coordinators….allow us to have at least SOME optimism.
Riley’s obvious mishandling of this situation reminds me of how he mishandled the transition from Ryan Katz to Sean Mannion (especially the absurd substitution pattern during the Wisconsin game that was so demeaning to Ryan Katz).
This all somehow seems different from the Mike Riley of years past. MR didn’t used to be tone-deaf in dealing with Beaver players and fans. But lately, it seems like Riley doesn’t care about the niceties. MR now seems to feel that he can do whatever the heck he wants, when he wants, no matter what others may think, and his critics can F-off for all MR cares.
Perhaps a screw came loose somewhere inside MR during the past year or two (maybe, as Angry has suggested, during the 2009 Civil War….perhaps at some other point….) This is simply not the same Mike Riley anymore…or so it seems to me.
My guess is depression, but I am not qualified to make that determination. It would appear on the surface that some key indicators are there.
Not attempting to start any rumors here but as Sad says he just looks…out of it. Noticeably gaunt and kinda spacey but maybe that’s just me. For a guy that has a reputation for being forthright he sure does have a number of 180’s this year – Katz #1 and Vaz #2…you all saw it during fall camp…everything’s on the table…I’m not contemplating making any staff changes. Weird.
I’m not qualified, either. Just seems like MR used to have his act together, and no longer does. The baffling mistreatment of Ryan Katz. The sideline laugh-fests during blowout losses. The lapses in clock and field management during games. And now the hasty refusal to consider changes to his coaching staff following a 3-9 season. Don’t know what’s up with MR, but something feels really wrong about this whole picture….

Agreed there, although not sure it didn’t start with the USC loss. Ironically that corresponds with my first post on the site.. OCTOBER 25, 2009 AT 12:04 AM. I started to become a bit concerned at that point.
Riley would be a travesty as AD! My biggest issue with Riley is he will maybe get 5 or 6 wins next year and use that to fool the fans that he should be safe for a couple more years. He will do just enough to play the system. Our best bet is if he gets 5 or less next year and we can him in a year where there will be few PAC-12 openings and OSU can get a good coach under 50 with more energy and who is a winner.

As was Belotti… it is just a means to an end… His conference record was 72–43, with his best year coming in 2001 with the Fiesta Bowl, the year after the Beavers 41-9 Drubbing of ND. But look at his conference records over the last 6-7 years of his tenure..not good, in fact the exact same percentage as the Beavs if my math is correct. The Ducks are just in the cyclical upturn, and I think we will be there soon enough. This also means there is hope for getting rid of Riley. My guess is our best option, and the most likely to succeed is to push for a new coordinator and hope that he matures into an HC fast enough to pull the switch.
And for the record, I think Riley as AD would only be a figurehead… no way they let him mess with the Baseball or BB programs. The other way out I see is a new tough AD that lays down the law with Riley. But that could also effect the other programs. Do we really want someone volatile in that position?
Pat Casey will soon be the answer. He wants to retire from baseball and hand it over to Lees.
He is exactly what you want and need in an AD and BDC should soon focus on his health anyway. Pat is no nonsense. He wouldn’t be seeking a paycheck as his primary care. He would get the house in order and keep it that way. Riley is not that popular. You just have an old fart fanbase that is complacent and BDC and Riley in collusion.
What makes him qualified to be AD? Isn’t this like making a great engineer a manager? He is used to dealing with much smaller budgets than the BB or Football coaches. I realize he seems like he might be good, but I don’t, on the surface, see the skills needed to run an entire athletic department. Just because a coach is a winner(and he is one) doesn’t make him a good AD candidate.

Bingo. As I’ve said elsewhere, Casey will keep all coaches fired up (or fired!). His passion for winning is obvious and he never stands by with a detached look as the officials or the opposition screws his team. He has a history of fund raising, recruiting, and WINNING.
To promote Riley would be applying the Peter Principle and would send the wrong message to everyone in the Athletic Dept.
I am not sure he would be gaming the system. I think he is probably clinically depressed and this may have effected his decision making ability(complatency, want/need to keep familiar coaches and styles). He could get that back, but my guess is if he doesn’t he will retire(I know its a big if). Assuming we can’t get him out FOR SOMEONE BETTER before that. My worry is replacement with someone else could lead to a worse outcome. We need someone that can recruit, knows the PAC-12, etc. Tough call, as has been pointed out before in the forum.
I am curious, angry… if Oregon State WAS to go after a new head coach, what’s your Top 5 list of coaches you actually think we would have a chance to hire?

Solich is old and a drunk to boot. Siblings are Nebraska grads and they tell me part of the reason he got canned, besides the drinking, were some rumors of him screwing around on his wife. Didn’t fit the clean cut image they want.
Turner Gill should not be judged by the Kansas debacle. He is a first class individual and a great recruiter. Too bad we don’t have a staff opening. He would be a perfect fit for MR’s family atmosphere.

Bottom line is he’s a winner who could be had for cheap. The clean cut image has gotten OSU nowhere. They went to a BCS game with bad asses. Oh, and some wives probably deserve to be cheated on…just saying!
Mendenhall and Calhoun will stay put, they’ve already stated that they are at their dream jobs. Solich did a nice job at both Nebraska and Toledo, but I do think you hit the nail on the head with Sumlin. The question with him is would he take the job? He might be more inclined to after seeing a year without Keenum. But then you have to convince him to leave Houston, so make sure you invite him up for a visit during the summer months, when there’s low humidity ;). Oregon State really needs to reinvent themselves to keep up with the Ducks. It’s disgusting. I think Riley deserves a lot of credit for how far he’s brought this program since he started, but I don’t think he can take them any higher, and a lot of you agree. I was hoping he’d break through. Since he can’t, I don’t want to spend any more time lounging around in Mediocrityville.

Mike Belotti went to Oregon from Dll. Kelly may be the exception rather than the rule but his story is not a once in a lifetime deal.

I would really like Langsdorf to step aside and for Riley to bring in Lance Leipold as OC. That dude just does not lose.
Good call on Leipold. There are excellent DIII schools (e.g. Wittenberg, etc) with coaches who would excel in D1.
Serious question…How long does Bob DeCarolis last as the AD at Oregon State? He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s back in June 2011, but was showing symptoms for 3 years prior. Parkinson’s is not a condition that “gets better” with time. At the time of his diagnosis, he was quoted as saying he wanted to help out with Brian Grant’s “Shake-it ’till We Make It” foundation.
“I want to learn what he is going through,” De Carolis said. “I’d like to use whatever little notoriety I have to work with his foundation and do what I can to help.”
Pat Casey wants to be the AD. He was rumored to be leaving his coaching position to take an administrative position back around the time DeCarolis was diagnosed.
I don’t see the football team coaching scenario changing significantly until Bobby D moves on. I’m starting to think Bobby D is planning to step down this year. He recently said he wouldn’t take any more interviews until the football season ended. I believe this is because he’s preparing to make an announcement about his future. It would be a great move for Bob D if he could transition into a role helping Brian Grant’s foundation. I could see him being successful and doing good things as far as raising money to help find a cure for the disease.
Does anybody think Pat Casey’s final year is this year and he will take the AD position over? Would this be a good thing for the football team? I don’t know Casey’s relationship with Riley, but I do know Casey is a winner and he would be driven to get results. Would he be able to persuade Riley to make drastic changes (possibly including leaving OSU)? I think the baseball team will survive losing Casey, as long as Casey still has a hand in the athletic department. I really think the first domino to fall will have to be Bob Decarolis if we’re going to see change at OSU, and I think it would be a positive move for Bob at the same time.
This scenario seems reasonable.
I don’t think Casey would be a good fund raiser/schmoozer, but he would get results and be no nonsense.
(I think he’s pretty good friends with Riley, though…)
Two points on fundraising: 1) being no nonsense and getting results on the playing field is a HUGE part of successful fundraising, and 2) Casey has already spearheaded expansion at Goss and FWIW BDC said last August of Casey, “He’s a gifted fundraiser”.
I too think he is good friends with Riley but don’t think he’d leave things unchanged for very long.
BDC Signed a 5yr contract extention this summer. After he was diagnoised he said in a statement that with treatment and life style changes he and his doctors felt the disease would not progress to a level that would prevent him from doing his job.
If you watch Beavers All Access he week he answers a fan’s question from a tailgating spot at the games. He looks health, hasn’t been hidding, and shows no signs of being ‘ill’. I wouldn’t expect him to step down.

If Mike Riley has depression? I actually wouldn’t because he has the money to actually afford a therapist. Others don’t have that luxury.

The truth is he has hubris on a scale that would make Oedipus comment on his arrogance and he clearly doesn’t give shit about the program or its fans any more. And he doesn’t have to. BTW, anyone see that Linfield lost to Wesley this weekend? Too bad..they are a fun team to watch. If you ever looking for a distraction from D-1 football, go for it, you will not be disappointed. These young men play with serious heart and for really the love of the game.
I like Leipold.. UW-Whitewater runs a good program. Don’t know if he would come to the west coast. He probably doesn’t have to deal with a lot of the prima donna recruits a D-1 program has to deal with. As an OC he would be perfect, and hopefully he can get whatever skills he needs asap. He certainly has the skills to make use of the talent at hand and evaluate talent as well. Its the only way to run a d-3 program.
And he runs the same zone read pro-set we do… with differences of course. But his teams are off the ball and headed downhill in a hurry. He will definitely make noise on a higher level than his alma mater one day. Can you believe he only makes about $75K a year?
Well I am sure he has been offered more money before. Wisconsin breeds some loyal folks though and I suspect he would probably only leave for say the job in Madison.
He interviewed at Grand Valley last year and would have taken the job if they hadn’t stayed in house with Matt Mitchell.
Besides, wouldn’t working for Riley be the fastest track to coaching in Madison if successful?
Agreed, but that is still Michigan.. Worth a shot for sure, but I doubt our wish comes true. Certainly this possibility strikes my interest more than some of the others.
Which is an awesome place BTW.. and I think that team will crush the Ducks this year. I thoroughly enjoyed my second trip there for this years 35-0 blowout. You should see their student section… craziness. They actually have all these chants and coordinated cheers. It is quite the site. Its a bit crass but its pretty funny to see 35,000+ students at a game yelling between sections “Eat Shit” and “Fuck You”(competition style) in perfect harmony. Ha. Makes an impression for sure.

Did a quick google on coach Lance Leipold at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Between him and his apparent arch nemesis Larry Kehres at Mt. Union they’re only 384-26 combined record with 14 national titles AND have faced each other in the nat. champ game four years running now. Jeezus effing christ!

I never go the Carroll games because they ALWAYS win. Van Diest was offered the head coaching job at MSU a few years back and turned it down. I’ve watched TV interviews with him and some of his players -M VD has a gift for moving people around. He recruits some Oregon kids.
