The first pitch of the 2011 baseball season will be thrown 2pm at Beiden Field in Fresno, California. Here's the weekend schedule:

02/19/11 vs. Gonzaga Fresno, Calif. 2:00 p.m. PT
02/20/11 vs. Gonzaga Fresno, Calif. 1:00 p.m. PT
at Fresno State Fresno, Calif. 6:05 p.m. PT
02/21/11 at Fresno State Fresno, Calif. 1:00 p.m. PT

Gonzaga will throw Ryan Carpenter in game 1 on Saturday. His stats last year were: 4-4, 5.67 ERA, 60.1 IP, 53 K

And this is his 2010 bio:

Started all 12 appearances…posted a 4-4 record and a 5.67 ERA…recorded 53 strikeouts in 60.1 innings…held opponents batting average to .273 for 10th-best in the West Coast Conference…recorded the fewest hits allowed on the team with 65…allowed a career-low two home runs…matched career-low of one triple allowed…recorded a no-decision in season debut against the University of Washington Feb. 21, pitched six innings and allowed four runs on four hits, struck out three and walked one…matched career-high of seven innings pitched and earned first win of the season at Centenary College of Louisiana Mar. 6…threw five innings, struck out seven batters, allowed two runs on four hits to earn the win at the University of Hawai`i April 3…earned third win May 15 at Saint Mary's College, pitching six innings, struck out seven and allowed four runs on four hits…recorded fourth win against Loyola Marymount University May 22 after throwing six innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits…struck out nine in 6.2 innings, allowed four hits and one earned run against the University of Portland May 29.

Sam Gaviglio (3-4, 5.60 ERA, 62.2 IP, 45 K) will get the opening day start for the Beavs. Freshman phenom Ben Wetzler will go in game 2.

Last year Gonzaga finished 20-36 overall and 8-13 in the West Coast Conference, however, they've received some votes in the 2011 Collegiate Baseball preseason poll. Oregon State leads the all time series 56-33.

——————————————————————————————————————————————

With regard to Fresno State, the Bulldogs have an all-time mark of 23-8 against the Beavers and have been picked to win the WAC. Collegiate Baseball has ranked them #29 in their top 40 poll. The NCBWA has the Bullodogs ranked #35 in their top 35 poll.

The Preseason All-WAC team included seven Fresno State players: junior outfielder Brennan Gowens, junior outfielder Dusty Robinson, senior first baseman Jordan Ribera, senior shortstop Garrett Weber, senior third baseman Danny Muno, junior catcher Trent Garrison and senior starting pitcher Greg Gonzalez.

Fresno State has not determined their starters for either game. The Beavers will throw Cam Booser on Sunday, and most likely Matt Boyd on Monday.

Due to injury and suspensions, the Beavers bullpen is understaffed to begin the year, and it will probably hurt them this weekend. Expect a split versus both squads, and a 2-2 mark heading back to Corvallis. Not exactly what we're all hoping for, but it is the likely scenario. Sam Gaviglio should win game 1, which makes Ben Wetzler the wild card. If he wins game 2, the Beavs could come out of this 3-1. Anything less than 2-2 would be a disaster.

  1. It should be interesting to see how Oregon bounces back. They had a chance in the 9th but Horton did what Pat Casey would not ever do, he bunted down 1 in the 9th with 1 out. That just makes no sense. They handed it away in the 9th by a horrible coaching decision. I’ve always looked at Horton and Casey and though Casey was far superior. He understands the game better and usually doesn’t make decisions where they hand the game away.

I think Oregon State goes 3-1 this weekend. I think they win their first 2 games but lose game 3 and win game 4. It will be interesting to see Booser pitch. He’s young and Fresno State is a good team, he probably will struggle his first time out there. It’s interesting the Beavers will probably have lefty starters 3 games in a row. Can’t remember the last time that happened. Hoping for the sweep but expect to lose one. Either way I think they get off to a good start.

So glad baseball season is here.

  2. Finally some other people who care about baseball.
The powers at be make it difficult to follow intelligently, but I still love it.

By the way, today’s audio feed will probably be available on KKAD (http://www.1550kkad.com/) since the basketball game begins at 1pm. I imagine KPAM is taking the hoops.

  3. I am very intrigued to see Casey’s new team with the former successful approach. The new bats are a good thing. I just don’t completely understand why they stick with aluminum at all.

  4. Beavs make an error to extend the first inning, Gonzaga capitalizes and takes a 2-0 lead. Carpenter strikes out the side in the 1st. Great start!

    Starting lineup:
    1. Nash-CF,
    2. Stamps-LF,
    3. Susac-C,
    4. Berberet-DH,
    5. Bell-3B,
    6. Smith-2B,
    7. Norris-1B,
    8. Keyes-SS,
    9. Poyer-RF

  5. I see Pat Casey made a gamble when it wasn’t necessary. Stealing with runners at 1st and second and no outs. That’s a gamble that’s worth it at that time. Naturally the next guy gets an rbi single. Susac appears to be a beast now. He has a double and a single in this game. Cycle here we come! lol

  6. I’ve never understood sacrificing a runner over to second base when you already have 1 out. It’s basically just throwing away an inning. You can’t rely on 2 out clutch base hits.

  7. Okay, the Beavers have a leadoff batter on. Fundamentals come into play here. Bunt him over and get a runner in scoring position for Susac with 1 out.

  8. Beavers have something going now. Runners on 1st and second with nobody out and Susac up. Beavers need to take advantage. Then Casey doesn’t allow their best hitter to swing the bat. Have to let him hit there.

  9. Tied at 2 now. They executed the fundamentals nicely in the inning. Would have liked Susac a chance to swing it but they got a run to tie it, so it’s not so bad,

  10. Stamps appears to be a huge upgrade over Miller. Miller could not get down any bunts last season, and it killed so many potential rallies.

    • He gets the job done, how can you not love him. I have a lot of faith in him. Hopefully he ends up being the closer for the majority of the year.

  11. The Beavers show shades of 2010. Susac gets caught in a rundown for no good reason. Was already in scoring position. Bad, bad baserunning

    • No doubt. So many times last year in situations like in the 11th, the Beavers didn’t get the job done. It was nice seeing them get it done this time.

I’m looking to tomorrow as well.

  12. Jake Rodriguez is starting at 3B today, Carter Bell is moving to SS today. That’s probably because Casey wasn’t happy with Kavin Keyes for committing 2 errors yesterday leading to 2 runs.

  13. Stamps with the stolen base. He’s gonna have a lot of those this year. Casey undoubtedly will take advantage of his great speed.

  14. 2-1 Beavs…Carter Bell a step slow to score from second on base hit. Thrown out at home. Ironically, Susac was a step too slow to score on Bell’s base hit and had to be held at 3rd. The middle of the lineup is unusually slow, especially considering they don’t have much power. Casey might want to think about moving Poyer up if he begins to handle the slider (toughest pitch for a guy who’s been out of the game to adjust to).

    • I think having guys produce and hitting a home run here and there is what the Beavers need at the three and four spot. If you made a change in that slot, it would be the #3 spot. Put Poyer there behind Stamps and you have a ton of speed 1-3 in the lineup. I think Susac has to be #3 or #4 in the lineup, he’s their best hitter.

    • Another guy thrown out at home plate. That’s on the third base coach. You can’t send guys home with 0 outs unless it’s basically a sure thing that he scores.

  15. Bases loaded for Jared Norris. He has a chance to bust this game wide open. Would love a double in the gap to score at least 2 maybe 3. A grand slam works too.

  16. Beavers making some baserunning mistakes. Poyer tried to leg out a triple when he didn’t need to and gets thrown out. Can’t take chances like that with 0 outs unless you’re sure you’ll make it.

  17. Overall, though, I like the new guard better than the old.

Wetzler could be special…pitching out of trouble/minimizing damage is one of the best measures of any pitcher. He passed.

    • Is it because they win games unlike the football and basketball teams? lol

This team is gonna be a good one as long as they shore up the baserunning, the young hitters continue to get better and the young pitchers continue to improve as well. I really like this team.

  18. I am pretty excited about this team, I am reserved yet though. I seem to remember getting very excited like this last year and getting let down. I wanna see them take out a power, then I will be pumped.

  19. Everyone likes a team that is 2-0 and pitches well. We’ll know more after they play Fresno State tonight, a top 30 team who the Beavers rarely beat.

I’ll say this much: it’s tough to gauge chemistry listening on the radio, but this team seems to have more selfless, winners than last year’s old guard. On the flip side, they are still making the same base running blunders of a year ago, and with the number of walks they’ve had in two games they should have scored more than 8 runs total. In other words, the hitting hasn’t been timely, but they’ve gotten just enough timely “productive outs” to score enough to win.

I don’t have a good feeling about Cam Booser tonight. His HS numbers are fantastic (5-1 with a 1.73 ERA and 54K/28 innings), and I have no reason to lack faith in the guy, but I do. I’m basing this on the look in his eye on his OSU profile…he reminds me too much of “KRhod” in that I see more arrogance than determination in his countenance. Wetzler looks intense, implacable; I thought he would be the wild card between a 2-2 weekend and a 3-1 weekend. I realize judging players based on photographs borders on phrenology, but hey it is early in the year and there’s not much else to go on.

  20. Can’t remember the last time I was excited for an OSU sporting event, probably the football CW (even though I knew we were gunna lose). I temper myself for basketball, CR is garbage, he’s gotta go.

  21. Sucks the link aren’t working. I was looking forward to watching them play. I stopped listening on the radio early in the first game. The guy is so bad. He never knows what is going on and he’s always late in letting the listeners know what’s happening. I wish Parker could call the games right now.

Pat Casey going with an odd lineup. No Susac or Poyer. That surprised me.

    Booser is impressive early on.

  22. Berberet seems to have a few jitters, doubt if it is anything serious.

Hey, as long as we are making some judgements from the players picture, I’ll weigh in. To me, Kavin looks ilke a baseball player in his pic.

I’m impressed with Kavin so far, would like to see him involved in a double play to end the fifth.

  23. Beavers are just killing themselves with mistakes. First mistake was Casey not starting Susac. In this inning Booser balked putting a runner in scoring position and scores on a blooper. Now there is a passed ball. That could lead to another run.

  24. Games like these will happen when you don’t play your best hitter. Guys aren’t putting together a single productive at bat. They’re making to too easy.

      • Since the Beavers aren’t a great offensive team, Susac should be in the lineup as a catcher or dh every game. They need all the offense they can get. I really wanted Poyer to play as well. He had 2 hits earlier today and I wanted him to get into a good groove at the plate. I’m not exactly a fan of Maz Gordon.

        • No doubt, I agree about Susac being a stud. I also agree that Poyer’s potential is huge (2 hits when hasn’t played in 2 years). I do think there is cause to rest Susac tonight. Catcher is tough, especially on a double header early in the season. We can save his knees/legs for tomorrow and the season.

          • He will only be catching about 3 times a week so his knees will be fine. I would’ve had him DH tonight.

Biggest problem tonight is Beaver players aren’t even working the count. It’s just quick outs. Not a good performance offensively.

    • No doubt. That’s why they need Susac in there. Poyer as well. The Beavers young hitters will get better and so will the offense. As for right now, I would prefer Max Gordon got significantly less time.

  25. I wouldn’t be too worried about the offense yet. It’s early in the season and the Beavs have a lot of unproven bats. It’s gonna take a while for some guys to find there groove and Casey knows this. That’s we’ll see a lot of different lineups during the first 20 games or so. There are 56 games in the season and all you really have to do is make the tournament and get hope your bats get hot. Thats how we won the second National Championship. My hope is that Susac, Bell, and Jones are guys that will be cornerstones in the 3-4-5 spots and hit above .300. With the speed of Nash and Stamps at the top of the lineup if they can find ways to get on base then we should be able to score runs. Hopefully, we have some guys step up in the 6-9 spots and hit for average. Norris had a terrible year last year, but he has the ability. I like what Poyer has showed so far. It sounds like he has some alley way pop to his bat. Tyler Smith is also an everyday player that needs to have his average around .300.

Overall, I’m looking forward to this season. There are a lot of young and unfamiliar faces on the team, which is a good thing. The last couple teams we fielded had a sense of entitlement. The took the opportunity to play for Oregon State for granted and never really worked like the National Championship teams did. This year, Casey has a much better group of guys, who are here for the team and not themselves. Will they make it back to Omaha this year? Most likely not, will I surprised if they do? Not one bit!

    • Yeah, I agree. It’s frustrating though when the pitching staff allows 2 runs and the offense only scratches 1 run across on 2 hits. I can’t wait for Jones to be back. He’s their best overall option at first base. Him and Susac are the team’s best hitter average wise and he gets on base a ton. He hit .329 last year including .377 in conference play. When he heals from his finger injury I wanna say? he’ll take a little bit getting his rhythm down, but he’ll be a good addition to the offense. Norris is alright here and there, but he struggled in the past and isn’t a proven hitter like Jones is. I’ve been impressed with Acosta. He’s hit a couple balls hard.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Carter Bell gets moved to SS and Jake Rodriguez becomes the everyday 3B come tourney time. Kavin Keyes may be the youngest player Casey has had, he’s 17 or a very young 18. Those are the types of kids that usually struggle their first years in college. I prefer high school players to not graduate early and allow themselves to develop some more. He’ll be good next year but will struggle this year.

My favorite lineup coming into the tournament would be

      CF Garrett Nash
      LF Brian Stamps
RF Jordan Poyer (He looks to be a really good hitter and could give them a ton of speed in 1-3 spots)
      C Andrew Susac
      1B Dylan Jones
      SS Carter Bell
      3B Jake Rodriguez
DH Parker Berberet/Luke Acosta (I like them both so either is fine)
      2B Tyler Smith

I think you have a decent lineup there. This team looks to have a tremendous pitching staff who don’t need a ton of runs, that lineup can give them all the runs they need, I believe.

  26. Just like I said, Josh Osich is starting today. First start in 2 years. He will only throw 40 pitches today. Ryan Gorton will probably relieve him.

  27. After an inning of play Beavers lead 1-0. Josh Osich has a strikeout. He’s been wild a little bit early, he launched a fastball to the backstop. Overall, it was to be expected though, in his first start since 2009. Seems like he’s overpowered some hitters.

  28. It is good to feel good about an OSU team…I hope they can produce a decent season, host a regional, and win the season series with the Ducks. That would be a successful season in my book.

I wish there was more TV exposure for college baseball…

    • They have a potential for all of that. I can see a similar record with the Ducks as last season. I think they’ll win the games in Corvallis and 2 of three in Eugene.

I wish there was more exposure as well. It’s sad that Lacrosse and Soccer get more regular season games on ESPNU than Baseball. They need to start marketing it and popularity with the sport will grow.

  29. After 2 and 1/2 innings it’s 3-1 Fresno State. odd inning there. Brian Stamps on first base with 1 out and Pat Casey didn’t try any hit and run on, especially considering the offense has struggled a little bit.

  30. After 3 innings it’s still 3-1 Fresno State. Tony Bryant is a good reliever. Beavers will count on him this year. He’s pitched 4 1/3 innings on the season and has yet to allow a baserunner.

  31. Beavs showing their warts. When they’re not handed 8 walks per game they can’t score any runs…this versus WAC pitching. Not good.

While small ball is beautiful to watch when executed, the problem is the odds of scoring a run approach zero if the leadoff man in any given inning doesn’t get on base.

    • To be fair, they have hit some balls really hard just haven’t found holes. If they keep tagging some balls eventually they’ll find holes and the Beavers will score.

  32. It’s still college baseball, it is still aluminum bats. It is very early, but at some point these guys are going to have to hit the baseball to win in the P-10. Margin of error is too slim otherwise.

  33. Beavers have runners on first and second with 2 outs. Andrew Susac up now. Time for Susac to come out big here and drive in a run or 2.

  34. Have to wonder if Casey needs to start recruiting better hitters. He recruits great pitchers but the offense is always far behind the pitchers. Also, he could probably use better assistants when it comes to coaching the hitters.

    • Waldron was good. He could have a real future as a broadcaster in my mind. Heck, just have do the games till he has to go play in the minors.

  35. Carter Bell could not come through. Well at least it is a game again. I really hope the Ducks lose again. It would be nice for their #12 ranked egos to come back from the islands 1-3!

    • Beavers have a shot. Would be a great confidence builder if they came back to win this game. I’m hoping the Ducks lose as well. Would be a really bad start, considering hype they had going into season.

      • Beavers got into a rhythm a little bit offensively here the last couple innings, but you can’t rely on 3 hits in the inning just to get a run. You have to bunt him over and take your chances then. Beavers have to execute the fundamentals.

  36. Damn, how is this game tied? Beavs have 4 more hits and have committed 4 fewer errors!!! Does everything seem to come so hard for Beavs Men’s Sports lately or is it just me?

  37. Not Pat Casey’s finest day. He made some really questionable pitching decisions. Hindsight, but he pulled 2 pitchers who had it rolling and brought in 2 guys who struggled and gave up the last 2 runs to Fresno

  38. Have to throw this one into the pool as a “bad loss”. Can’t have two many of those in college baseball if you want to get to the tourney. You gotta get to that 30 win mark at least as a jumping off point. Went 0-2 against a tough opponent. Missed an early season opportunity. Such is the life of a Beaver fan circa 2010-11

    • I wouldn’t be too worried about this loss. They have UConn next who is a tournament caliber team, they can win that game. The offense found their rhythm late. They just need to be a little smarter on the base paths. Casey should probably put guys in motion more jmo though.

  39. Beavers need to get back to the fundamentals on the base paths. A lot of bad baserunning mistakes that hurt them. Today a baserunning blunder may have cost the Beavers the game. Casey also has too quick of a trigger on pulling pitchers. Needs to let guys pitch through minor jams. Child’s in the ninth could have gotten out of it but Casey had too quick of a trigger and brought in another guy. Child’s was pitching really well, no reason to pull him.

  40. Glad I didn’t listen to this game! Sounds brutal.
I figured they’d go 2-2 on this trip…it still feels disappointing, though.
At this point I’m hoping the Ducks lost/lose. That’s all that can help ease the pain of this one.
ps. Can we ever beat Fresno? Jeez, 25-8.

    • It was disappointing but at the end of the 4th game they finally started to get the offense going. They definitely would have won yesterday if it wasn’t for bad baserunning. That’s fixable though. They just need to work with the players on how to run the bases and know when to take chances and know not to. I think they’ll learn from their mistakes. So with the offense finally starting to turn around, the pitching staff looking good, I see a lot of positives. As long as the young hitters and young pitchers keep developing, this team will be just fine.

They have a chance in the next stretch to get a nice win( UConn) and to pile up a ton of wins. I definitely can see them winning their next 8 games. I expected 3-1 start, 2-2 kind of sucked but there were encouraging signs.
