Anybody have ideas on the bullpen struggles? The starters have right on, but even the wins the firemen have not been able close it out. I don’t have stats, but it seems like walks have been a major contributor to their struggles. Do they have “good” stuff or is it hitable? Also, where does Adam Duke fit in on this team, is he shut down for the season? It seems like we need one or two more arms out there. Is Boyd on a pitch count? He seems reliable but he hasnt pitched very much lately, or is he in the doghouse?
No idea what’s up with Boyd. Feels like he’s getting pulled early though. They’re treating him more as a situational lefty even though he gets right handed batters out with regularity. Beavers need a guy like Carlos Rodriguez, Scott Schultz, Taylor Starr to step up. Need to have at least 4 consistent relievers. Having less puts too much pressure on Bryant and Boyd.
It’s a pity that the relievers can’t seem to hold up what the starters have established. What agony for Dan Childs yesterday to watch his solid game being dismantled.
New article up on OSU Marketing Changes for 2012. I think BDC is making a good call with the ‘OS’ for 2012 but am still curious what Tinker may do for 2013. I like the bright orange but firmly believe we need the same official font in the endzones. We have seen it before for the OSU vs. TCU game and it looked sharp. I would be satisfied if we got that in orange for 2012 and then we can always consider a checkered/beaver tail waffle design if Tinker implements broader changes for 2013. I think OS can work as good as OSU, based off looks and simplicity, so I care more about uniform combos and more edginess from Tinker and don’t think OSU winning out over OS is as important.
Why bunt with Barnes when Gorton is up next? Casey is too eager to give up outs. They got lucky and took the lead, but jeez…that is not a good decision. If Gorton was at bat with nobody out and Barnes was behind him, then bunt, but not the other way around.
That is a complaint I’ve had for a while. He gives away outs too often. When you have a good hitter up with a runner on second and no outs there’s no reason to bunt unless it is late in the game.
Gordon takes the fastball down the middle and then chases two balls. I understand working a count but you cannot let pitches to hit go by when you’re trailing.
Anyone know why Gordon is the lead-off hitter? Shouldn’t we bury him somewhere late in the lineup so it doesn’t hurt us as much? I like Tommasini but I feel like Gordon ruins some of the mojo that would connect him to Smith, Conforto and Davis.
I agree with the speed assessment. Who else do we have with speed that could hit in the one spot? I am not in love with having a lead-off guy who can pretty easily go 0-4.
Also, I didn’t mean to imply that Tommasini should be the lead-off guy. I just meant that I wish we had someone better in the one spot so that we didn’t have an automatic out between Tommasini and Smith.
Beaver starters were better in the first two games, Arizona’s bullpen just was better. If the bullpen does its job yesterday the Beavers win the series. Also, Casey sticks with guys far too long.
Its you. Parker has always had a lot of “fan” in him and pulls for the Beavs while trying to be objective. Some of the announcers at this level, while able to stay more detached, don’t give as clear a mental picture of the game as MP.
I understand Jim Wilson will join the broadcast Tuesday, he is always educational for me.
As to the “open mic” problems this weekend, I’m not sure MP is totally to blame and, in any case, didn’t mind getting in on some of the back story of what is involved in producing a broadcast, beats hearing another commercial.
Beavs played well. Arizona just has clutch hitting, pitching, and a ton of fight. I thought Arizona was impressive. Beavs aren’t too far behind them. Today’s game was hard to gauge because the umpiring was so atrocious. Larry Scott: fix the damn umpiring and referees in this league, big shot.
Casey yanked Boyd way too soon yesterday and didn’t get him there soon enough today. In a critical game that you have to win you can’t leave a struggling pitcher in there that long.
And man, the hitters need to get more aggressive. They didn’t put the bat on the ball in the 9th. You have to at least give yourself a chance.
Agree. The 9th inning was really disappointing. Boyd’s performance only confirmed that he was yanked too soon yesterday.
Dawgs coming off a sweep of Cal-Bakersfield and pound them today, 13-1.
Pilots next though on Tuesday. I expect Starr to get the ball. Word is that he has good stuff but can’t get his confidence back. This would be a good game to get on track.
Yes, he’s saying something definable. Moreover, he’s an interesting person even if pirates aren’t your thing. Coug fans will probably look forward to what he has to say. With Riley, you open one eye and continue on with your nap.
Go beavs!
get tough beavs,win the day
Thanks your support Chip!

Eggers recently reported that it is very possible Duke will not play at all this season. If he does it will be late in the season/ post-season.

Why is it when we get a elite recruit, there always seems to be some problem?

Same thing happened to Ben Wetzler on Friday.
Stream? Anyone have one?
Sounds like you may have enlarged prostate?
This worked yesterday, but you won’t know until it starts.

OSU Marketing Changes for 2012:
http://beaverbyte.com
@Beaver_Baseball Today’s lineup: Gordon-CF, Smith-SS, Conforto-LF, Davis-RF, Dunn-3B, Child-DH, Barnes-1B, Gorton-C, Tommasini-2B, Fry-LHP #gobeavs
So with Dan Child as the DH is this similiar to the strategy last week when Wetzler was in the lineup and then they pinch hitted for him?
Yes. Expect to see Keyes pinch hit for Child
Home plate ump is notably horrible.
Yup. No consistency.
Tyler Smith is just awesome.
Conforto chasing a lot of pitches lately.
Looks like Fry has some good stuff today.
Usual audio guy is off today so we’re going to have to hear Parker in between innings today. Ugh.
Hope he didn’t eat chili last night!
Lead-off double for Dunn. Nice way to start the inning.
Nice job by Keyes to work a walk there.
Gorton makes an out but got Dunn in from third. Wanted to at least get that.
2-0 Beavers. That was almost an incredible play
Now the Beavers need to continue to add on runs. Can’t be content. Last 2 days they didn’t add on runs and it hurt them.
Fry a no hitter through 3!
Damn
You jinxed it!! Haha
Yup
Fry is getting behind every hitter. Needs to start working ahead or he’ll be gone soon.
Ground ball DP would be big here
Need to get the bullpen up.
Another strikeout and Fry may limit the damage to just 1 run
Beavers catch a break with the error, time to take advantage
…and a great Bake McBride reference.
That was an awful at-bat by Gorton
Passed ball and Keyes scores. Beavers catching some breaks this inning.
It makes sense of the guy behind the bunter makes contact and is a good hitter, but Gorton is unproven at best.
Beavers’ problems in the field costing them.
I don’t know how much longer Casey and Yeskie can stick with Fry.
This ump is so bad jeez.
Arizona is gonna run away with this one. Fry cannot get anybody out.
I don’t know if anyone could get a hitter out with this ump behind the plate. Pitches right down the pipe are being called balls. It’s ridic
Fry needs a SO here
Fry just isn’t putting guys away. He’s had guys 0-2 repeatedly and hasn’t put them away
Fry is sucking
Plenty of time left guys. We still have 5 innings of at-bats
Yes, but the pitchers are struggling and keeping Arizona off the board will be tough
Had another guy 0-2 and walked him
Boyd comes in and limits the damage. He’s about as dependable as it gets. Gonna need him to pitch big and give the offense a chance.
He’s going to make a good pro
1 out walk by Tyler Smith. He’s on base again. Now you got Conforto, Davis, Dunn up. Just the guys you want up.
That ball was CRUSHED.
Conforto!!
Damn it. Beavers just not getting anything from the bullpen
This is incredibly frustrating.
Utes score 2 in the top of the 9th to beat the ducks 4-3. The fowl gave up a 3-0 lead.
Beavers finally get a shutdown inning. Got Tommasini, Gordon and Smith coming up. Time to score some runs and tie this up or take the lead
Gordon has been decent as of late and you typically want a lead-off guy to have some speed and Gordon has that. Tommasini doesn’t have good speed.
Beavers don’t really have a guy with speed who is also a really good hitter. That’s the issue. Gordon is the best guy who fits that
Time for the offense to step up here and get this thing evened up
Tied up*
Tying run up at the plate with Keyes. Time for Keyes to hit his first HR of the season
Casey sticking with Fry way too long really hurts now.
Is the stream behind. Score 7-5 according to the Napkin.
Nice weather!
Got to have Jake pinch hit if Barnes reaches
Barnes had his pitch to hit on a 3-1 count and didn’t pull the trigger. That may have been the Beavers chance.
what happened to Garrett Nash?
Transferred to a small college, I believe.
Crap.
That was funny replay!
Rally caps haha
Need a miracle
Beavers taking fastballs down the heart of the plate for strike 3. Awful.
Not good.
Worst umpiring crew I’ve ever seen, so apropos ending.
I was right: ‘zona 2 of 3. Better pitching. Damn.
Beaver starters were better in the first two games, Arizona’s bullpen just was better. If the bullpen does its job yesterday the Beavers win the series. Also, Casey sticks with guys far too long.
Casey had a bad series.
Yeah, that was a bad call
Call sucked. PAC-12 quality officiating.
I think Mike just jumped out the press box.
Is it me or is he crazier than ever?
maybe that’s what Larry Scott needs is a little Mike Parker time.
Its you. Parker has always had a lot of “fan” in him and pulls for the Beavs while trying to be objective. Some of the announcers at this level, while able to stay more detached, don’t give as clear a mental picture of the game as MP.

As to the “open mic” problems this weekend, I’m not sure MP is totally to blame and, in any case, didn’t mind getting in on some of the back story of what is involved in producing a broadcast, beats hearing another commercial.
That was some funny stuff.
Parker needs to express his true feelings more. All those repressed thoughts will build up and eventually he will snap.
Beavs played well. Arizona just has clutch hitting, pitching, and a ton of fight. I thought Arizona was impressive. Beavs aren’t too far behind them. Today’s game was hard to gauge because the umpiring was so atrocious. Larry Scott: fix the damn umpiring and referees in this league, big shot.
ya, big shot

Football is just around the corner and I can’t wait!!
You might want to wait… looks like a third straight losing season.
I can’t see any more than a 5-6 year at best. It all starts with the O-line and we don’t appear to have one. Mannion will be running for his life. JB
Make that 5-7… math is hard.
Sadly, I think you are right. Can’t run and can’t stop the run. Sound familiar?
Matt Boyd had the best perspective: @mattboyd31Learn from it, get better and move on. Time to focus on Tuesday and get after it.
OT, but Mike Leach’s clarity is SOOOO refreshing compared to Riley:

Hard to picture MR giving the “fat little girlfriends” speech. The greatest sports interview ever!
I avoided the Sunday game because every time I would tune in to see the other two games, Brocker would come in and give up two runs.
?
Apparently that superstition didn’t work because it didn’t account for the umps?
