Beavs showed resiliency and fight in game 1. Those are intangible trademarks of good teams. First win like that for some of these younger guys, so that will help build their confidence to the level of the veterans. Beavers have a better offense than in years past. When Jake Rodriguez is hitting 9th, you know the lineup is stacked.

Game 2 starter, Dan Child, has quietly pitched to a 1.65 ERA in 32 innings this year. The team ERA dipped below 4 tonight, which is a promising sign. Usually the arms are ahead of bats, but this year might be the other way around…

Game time is 2:05PT.

    • Yeah, I was thinking the same thing (regarding if his start is legit).

Off point, but another thing to keep an eye on: I read during preseason that Conforto strikes out a lot. We haven’t seen that yet. Wondering if we see him cool down and start to K more once the league develops a scouting reports on him.

        • He has been awesome, no doubt. I penciled him for 3 or 4 hitter in my preseason report. But I thought he’d K much more based on what I read (and his big/powerful swing). His swing is pretty compact, though. He reminds me of a lefty Jeff Bagwell.

  1. The offense is going to have to really show up today. UA will breakout on offense one of these games and the beavs need to be able to keep up. I think 10 runs or so will win today’s game.

  2. I think even I underestimated Conforto and Davis.

OT… angry brought it up yesterday:

I’m always a proponent of track and field at OSU, but did you all scroll down to the pic of the logo?

It doesn’t look bad on the grass. It’s certainly better than the angry muskrat the crappy 70’s script below it wants us to believe is a beaver. Other than Goss, this is the first I’ve seen the logo used on any of our other facilities. Maybe I’m not paying any attention to it on other buildings as I walk by?

Anyway, you can see it on the cam:

    • Does anyone know why the OS logo is not to be used in the media (according to OSU’s trademark and licensing)?

Isn’t it a little hard to avoid using it in the media if it’s on our unis and facilities… and the league is going broad spectrum for media/sports coverage within the year?

    • While I don’t like that logo, it does look better than the angry muskrat.
I like the circle around it…adds a lot yet is simple.

    • I was looking at plans for the new turf at Reser and the practice field a few days ago. The new Reser turf will have the “OS” logo at center field. One endzone will say “Oregon State” and the other “Beavers”. The thing I thought was interesting was the the font in the endzones will be the old font similar to whats in the endzones now.

You would think that from a marketing perspective it would make sense to have similar graffics and logos throughout the athletic complexes. Gill has the angry beaver at mid court with the new Oregon State font on the endlines, Goss has the OS logo prominently on the outside of the building with the new Oregon State font on the field, and now the new turf at Reser will have the new OS logo at mid field and the old font in the endzones. It makes no sense.

I don’t like the angry beaver much, I think the OS is much better as a logo, but either way I wish OSU would settle on a logo or identity and use it. Its simple enough but the AD can’t seem to figure it out. Theres money and recongnition to be had from a unified brand.

      • Jack,

Did some research, according to OSU’s trademarks and liscensing info, the angry beaver is OSU’s primary logo and the OS is the secondary logo. Therefore OSU prefers the media to use the angry beaver.

My problem is if you look at the best college programs in the country, while their merchandise may have several different versions of their logo, you’ll notice the Athletic departments have a united front, particularaly in regard to facilities and signage. One logo that is their primary logo slapped everywhere, and it’s the same on the media uses.

OSU of course if a mishmash from facility to facility and in the media. Anyone suprised.

        • The ‘Oregon State’ on the basketball court actually looks pretty strong. I like it. The new track OS has little border and I think that is partly to focus even more on the brighter orange which looks good. I think the ‘Oregon State’ in the endzones definitely should match Gills and I think if they went with that same bright orange and it matches the center of the field it will look very sharp. If the endzones were black as they are now then that orange would pop. Only other option would be bright orange endzones but then the lettering couldn’t match Gills as it should.

They seem to be on an improving path but having the old football endzone font is weak as currently there is nothing unique about it and it doesn’t really sell our brand. I am fine with ‘Beavers’ in one end zone but again that should match the official font from Gill and the ‘Beavers’ we see on the basketball jerseys.

      • So the next question is when/if the logo on the football helmets change.
I’ve grown quite fond of the block BEAVERS across the chest of the baseball unis. Wouldn’t mind seeing that in the end zones.

  3. Wade really throwing a lot of strikes. If he continues to do this the Beavers may have to get a little more aggressive on the first pitch as the game goes on.

      • They swept South Carolina which I thought were some good wins. I just thought it was interesting, they don’t have a great baseball traditon.

        • South Carolina has been struggling as of late, I thought UK would take that series. UK played well but they usually come back to reality beginning the second weekend of SEC play. They don’t have a great tradition that I know of but it is cool to see teams sort of come out of nowhere to have a lot of success.

  4. I really liked the end of that inning. We got a guy on base through intelligent play and then capitalized on it, all the while we had two outs. I don’t remember us scoring much last year in 2 out, no runners on situations. I know that is a tough situation to be in but the threat that we can score that way is huge.

    • The offense is more potent this season but I notice guys are just taking better approaches in general. Guys aren’t trying to do too much. They’re staying within themselves, they’re being patient and waiting for their pitch. A lot of guys have shown a lot growth and maturity this season. It is nice to see.

      • Wow, I wish I knew that much about baseball. Still at 1.7%, I don’t believe that I saw it a single time last season and we likely encountered it at least 100 times. I don’t believe that we scored a single run in that situation last year…

        • All 3 of the Beavers’ runs have came with 2 outs and nobody on. You won’t see that too often. Team has been really clutch at the plate.

  5. I’m noticing Dylan Davis is pulling off the ball a bit. Isn’t really staying back on it like he had been. Hopefully he makes the proper adjustments.

    • I have a feeling he’s lost some confidence. He’s been struggling for a while. He isn’t really aggressive at the plate. Not taking many good swings. Keyes is in a similar spot.

  6. Tyler Smith comes through again!!! Double off the fence scores Gordon. Tyler Smith has been incredibly clutch so far this season.

  7. Child having control issues. Been that way for most of the game. He’s battling though. Would like to see him get through 6 with the score the same. Then Casey can bring in Boyd.

  8. Now that is some good pitching. When Child needed to come up with some big time pitches in that inning he did. He’s been really solid today.

  9. The last batter just made me a big fan of Dan Child. You could see him dig down and get something extra for those last few pitches.

  10. Feels like Casey and Yeskie tried to extend Child too long. The end of the 6th Child seemed to be out of gas, didn’t think they’d send him out for the 7th.

  11. Tough spot for Boyd. Runner on second and no outs. Gonna need to pitch brilliantly to get out of this jam and keep the lead

  12. anybody else notice how parker keeps saying “thank you, gentlemen” whenever they give a shot of the bullpens? it probably shouldn’t, but it bugs the shit out of me.

    • Tough crowd. Parker’s being polite to the folks who help him see into otherwise invisible corners and you pan him? Sheesh.

        • To be fair indeed to Parker…you should listen to the summer Knights games he calls. There are a bunch of regulars who literally run to each end to give bullpen updates. I know he appreciates the convenience of the BNO cameras.

    • However, perhaps he reads angrybeavs – he now at least turns off the microphone when he’s instructing his “hirelings.”

        • Much much better production today. I think it would benefit the athletic department to spring for a communications scholarship. They would indirectly see a return on that investment via essentially a more satisfied viewing/listening public. The silent majority type.

          • If you are speaking of the tv production, absolutely. The bullpen, not so much. I think Casey blundered a bit there.

I hesitated to comment at all on the TV one way or the other, since I’m not paying to watch it – unless one counts my small contribution to OSU athletics in general.

  13. If this was last year’s Keyes, he would hit a single to left and plate the go ahead run. This season I’m not feeling so confident.

  14. Brocker hasn’t been good since that first series or two. He was great in SB so I became biased. Seems Casey did, too, because he keeps going to him.

Casey’s worst move was Gorton starting the 8th, but even having Brocker pitch the 9th is questionable. It’s pretty standard, at home, to throw your closer in that situation and try to win it bottom of 9th.

  15. I think Brocker’s biggest problem is he throws 2 pitches (fastball, slider) and there’s not much speed differential between the two. Fastball is 90mph, slider is like 86mph. Hitters have been taking the slider and waiting on the fastball (and crushing it).

  16. He’s on. Time for Gordon to shoot a ball in the gap and see if the Beavers can bring up Smith, Conforto and Davis with a chance to tie it or win it

  17. A lot of mistakes by the coaching staff as far as pitchers go but the Beavers also had some bad lucky today. Max Gordon nearly hit it out and if he does the game changes. Keyes also hit a ball hard that was caught that could have given the Beavers the lead. Very frustrating game.

  18. Bullpen will be interesting tomorrow, AZ hasn’t used as much as Beavs. Brocker likely to sit tomorrow, worked both games so far and hasn’t looked that good. Fry threw 92 pitches last week, should be good for 7 or more innings if he stays in control.

  19. The bullpen needs to start performing. This game was a test for the bullpen and they failed. Boyd and Bryant are the only reliable relievers. That has to change.

  20. I really didn’t like seeing brocker come on in the ninth. Im in no way a baseball guru, but I don’t like seeing a guy who gave up the lead hard yesterday be in a position to give up the lead again. Back to back homers followed and stays in for a single, geez. Angry was right on about Conforto being due for a strikeout. Didn’t get my sixth run today.

  21. Tough way to lose but win tomorrow and you just took the series from a highly thought of ballclub. Brocker now has given up 4 dingers and 20 hits in 12.2 IP. The problem is who do you go to? Schultz hasn’t been that good either. An argument can be made though that Boyd is better against a righty than Brocker/ Schultz. So forget baseball wisdom and keep Boyd in.

Stanford v USC rained out. ucla pounds wsu. ducks score 3 in B8 to beat UT. All the top 10 won except north carolina, lost to nc state. Tyler Smith did raise his average to .469
