  1. Hate to see Boyd make that play with the runner at his back, spent a couple hours getting sewed up from cleats in the head on a similar play.

  2. So nice to watch and listen to Beaver Baseball in the early spring! Can’t believe SDSU had no audio. C’mon guys…18-0 is within reach! :)

  3. Man, I thought Max Gordon might have gotten that over the RF’s head at first, good at-bat though. Runner on third and 1 out for Smith.

  4. Man, the Beavers can’t catch a break early on. A lot of hard hit balls right at guys. Bryant’s starter isn’t fooling anyone, just been very fortunate.

  5. Dylan Davis needs to be more selective at the plate. Has swung at a couple bad pitches for groundouts so far. Needs to be more patient and swing at better pitches when he gets ahead in the count or on first pitches.

  6. Another hard hit ball right at a defender. Eventually some of these balls are going to start finding holes. Scoreless after 4 innings

  7. Casey puts on the butcher boy play. Genius move by Pat Casey. Worked out perfectly, runners on first and third and no outs for Tyler Smith

      • Squaring around early on a bunt to get the infielders to begin coming in, then pulling it back at the last minute and slapping the ball. It’s basically to hit a ball on a line at charging infielders so they have no time to react to it and can get it past them pretty easily.

        • Ummm… I don’t think it means that. To butcher boy a pitch is to swing down on it in a chopping manner. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a bunt. It’s just the motion of the swing involved.

Ichiro is a master of the butcher boy… and many other swings.

That show bunt is called a slug bunt last I knew. It can be completed with a butcher boy for a dribbler, or the batter can pull back and slam a high fastball for a double like Fernando used to do.

          • It is meant to chop down on the ball and hit past the charging infielders, it has many different names. Ichiro did not do the butcher boy. Slapping hits and butcher boy are not the same thing. Butcher boy is to show a bunt initially, pull it back and chop down at the ball to get it by the infielders. I don’t believe Ichiro ever did this in MLB.

          • That’s a slug bunt.

Unless the slang changes over time and terminology changes with it and I’m just late to the party.

When Valenzuela would show bunt then pull back and swing away, that was not a butcher boy. That was a slug bunt which he usually drove for a double. And you know how round that boy was.

Ichiro did whatever it took to get his bat on the ball. Some were slaps. Some were cricket digs. Some were butcher boys. He was so good early in his career that he would start on what he thought was a fastball then chop his swing to catch a change up that was dropping in front of him.

The swing is also a common swing for batting practice since it over-emphasizes the importance of driving down on the ball.

          • It can, but not if done right. The butcher boy is meant to meet the ball on the downward swing and drive it forward, not down.

            -or-

Is that a kind of cycle?

  8. Bryant (whoever they are) has played a good game. Game out of a runner on third no out situation. Beavs fail in the clutch.

  9. Perfect bunt by Peterson after Jake Rodriguez’s single. Jansen will be bunting here to put runners on second and third

  10. Perfect execution of small ball in the bottom of the 10th to win it. Walk-off RBI single for Tyler Smith. 2-1 Beavers win and now 9-0

  11. It’s a joy to watch a team that is disciplined, executes their jobs to near perfection, and never stops battling. Essentially, Beaver baseball is the antithesis of Beaver basketball.

    • Especially winning on a night when seemingly nothing is going your way and having terrible luck. Gotta love this team.

      • Terrible luck?

Hey Jason… tell us about luck again. Apparently one team gets to use it as an excuse.

        Great fallacy-o there uncanny.

        • Wa what? Luck? Dammit Jack, I’m in Hood River enjoying a 3 day birthday party with the other half of ‘Fat’ Tailgate Society, getting updates on Beaver baseball from AB.com resulting in another win, dreading Monday’s logo announcement, and you have to bring up my most hated line, “fuck o the Beavs” or something like that.
We haven’t spoken literally months and this is how you’re going to drag my pathetic ass back into the fray from my football hibernation 6 months before the season?!
Aw, I see you’ve already grown tired of the other posters so you come back to your favorite whipping boy, ole JtB. I miss you too Jack. Seriously we should have an off season brew at Oregon Trail with Pettibonehead just to live on the edge.

          PS
BeavGoph, your two-bowl-games-in-two-nights and your downing of free waffles performance lived on tonight at our Beaver BS session. We hope to add to your legacy this coming season.

          • Hey Jason. Just looking at the football schedules last weekend. Will be coming out for a game, perhaps SC. Happy birthday to the matriarch of the FTS. If the Luck o the Beavs does not take hold, perhaps see you in Omaha.

    • LOL … please dont mention Beaver BB! With so many first half leads, an even decent coach would have more conference wins. CR needs to go….

      GREAT GOIN, Beaver baseball!!!

      • Yes, why pollute a baseball thread with talk of Beaver basketball. Thanks for the updates GB90 and all. Did y’all notice that the forks beat Arky in Suprise yesterday, 3-2.

        • Gonzaga also beat Arkansas today. Marco Gonzales threw a complete game shutout, same guy the Beavers knocked out of the game a couple weeks ago. If Beavers handle business the next 2 days, they’ll jump into the top 5 in all the polls. Oregon lost to Fullerton 8-2 as well.

        • Tridents!

What half-moron or higher intelligence being looks at a gig and calls it a fork? They’re not used for even remotely similar purposes.

Besides… tridents are way cooler. Who the hell would fear a fork? I’d fear a spoon before I’d fear a fork.

  12. Whilst waiting for today’s baseball games and especially for haters and loathers of the despicable Lynn Snyder, the track team is in Salem – taking baby steps into full recovery after being left for dead. Two women are in Seattle at the Dempsey indoor – a good high jumper and a 13,000 meters runner. And Ryan Cope, freshman football player is going to run hurdles in Salem this evening. It’s all on the OSU website. As if that isn’t enough, the softball team is playing today and they’ve done well so far.

    Gotta love spring sports.

    • Absolutely, he is so knowledgeable in both FB and Baseball and has a way of not speaking over the play by play guy. His experience as a school teacher must come into play in both his timing and the well presented comments. Even I understand what he says!

    • Wilson said something very provocative after Friday’s game. Called it a “system win,” by which he means OSU is a team that is resilient, expects to win, is well-coached, and finds a way. All of the qualities that are absent in the hoops squad and too rare on the gridiron.

  13. Single by Conforto scores a run to tie it up, no RBI though. Runners on first and second and no outs. Keep tacking on runs.

  14. Two run double by Dylan Davis and it’s 3-1. Starting to see Dylan Davis adjusting to the pitch on the outside part of the plate and driving it. Great to see.

    • Hard to complain about a crooked number inning but they wasted a run not getting Davis across from second with nobody out.

  15. Great catch by Conforto and that ball carried a ways. Not gonna take a really well hit ball to get out in left field today.

  16. Conforto destroys a two run shot to right field and it’s 5-2 Beavers. You could tell he was getting closer to hitting one out today. His swing was looking good and he just missed a pitch last time up. Having a guy hitting like Dylan Davis is behind him forces pitchers to give him more pitches to hit

  17. Beavers pretty fortunate there, runner on the move and Smith moves over to cover and it’s a line drive right at him for a double play. 5-2 Beavers after 6 1/2 innings

  18. Not to start counting chickens before they hatch but does anyone know what San Francisco and Texas St look like? What our odds of a sweep in those series?

    • Texas State is 3-7, San Francisco is 4-7. Texas State has some solid starters at the top of the rotation but the Beavers should handle their bats. San Francisco is alright. They’ve battled Arizona this weekend although losing both games. I think San Francisco has a better chance of beating the Beavers than Texas State does. Neither series will be easy, but I like OSU’s chances to sweep Texas State.

  19. YEA… We beat Bryant…. We beat Bryant!!

I was afraid they would be the toughest games on the schedule. After beating them the PAC-12 will be a cakewalk! Has any baseball team gone undefeated? Until this year? JB

PS: Question…. where is Bryant? Do they have a nickname? Is there any chance we could get them on the basketball schedule?

  20. Beavers might sweep, but Bryant at least seems to offer some competition. I remember a series against Hartford (I think a couple of years ago) and it was brutal. All their pitchers could do was throw mid-80’s fastballs over the middle of the plate on almost every pitch. I think SDSU was targeted as the test and Beaver pitching dominated.

  21. Forks, yes Jack forks, beat Arky again today 3-1. Not a good trip west for them. Fullerton up on the ducks 3-0 in the third.

    • I’ll take the advice from above and just laugh at their idiocy. They call themselves forks and have a trident for their logo.

You say tomato, I say tomatillo.

  22. Players seem to be pretty excited for the rebranding Monday. Steven Nelson saying

” So ready for this beaver unveiling Nike giving us 3 new helmets unis and everything else this year #gobeavs”

  23. OT – From Wilner’s blog:
“The NCAA punished Saint Mary’s on Friday for recruiting violations and hit coach Randy Bennett with a failure to monitor/failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance — severe charges that will be a lasting stain on his reputation.”

“Failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance”? How might this figure into the Ucks situation? Is this charge part of a defined list, or just the NCAA working “on the fly”?

    • It’s just part of the descriptive meaning for the FTM violation. FTM is usually leveled against a school/coach/admin when the players are doing something without their knowledge. In the case of Bennett, it was a former assistant coach who violated rules.

When you see this kind of penalty you’ll also hear about how the coach never knew, and the NCAA is just being mean and blah blah blah. But in the rules it says the buck stops with the coach. If his underlings or players do something wrong, it’s assumed that the coach didn’t take the time to mentor them on compliance.

Penalties will depend on how obvious the violation was and how experienced the violator might be. A frosh who walks onto campus and screws up on his first day will barely turn the NCAA’s head. When a school has a history of many frosh screwing up on the first day year after year (Boise State) then it gets a little more serious. When it’s an assistant coach, it’s more serious still.

When it gets to the point that many assistants are violating many rules or many players are openly breaking many rules, then even if the coach has no idea these things are going on the school just has no control over the situation. That’s when the NCAA comes down with LOIC.

    • Wilner is prone to drama and Bennett can feel free to bring the “stain on his reputation” to Corvallis in 2015 (after CR is let go) if his feelilngs are hurt too badly!

Bennett has been farting around in the WCC for too long anyway. Few is the big daddy who’s not going anywhere in that league, so it’s time for Bennett to make some noise elsewhere.

  24. Fullerton wins the duck series, taking today’s game 5-2. To add insult to injury a Fullerton player wore the number 8 today for the first time since Horton wore the number as head coach. Fullerton is now 10-0 on the season.

    • Oregon will probably be swept. Fullerton has potential to be a national seed this season. They’re a level above Oregon, Stanford beat Texas to take the series and look to sweep tomorrow. West coast has some elite teams this season with Stanford, UCLA, Oregon State and Fullerton. Good to see.

      • ASU and Standford. They throw in a few other schools such as Boise to make it the PAC.
Kind of lame I know, but shows with a good coach you can win in Corvallis. CR?
They finished 10th nationally last year. It’s a fairly big deal in the Big Ten.

  25. Paging Bendbeaver………..props to PU for beating the f’ing BADgers in Madison after being down by 13. Evans, the one forward for Wiscy has been so bad with the yips at the free throw line that he was shooting JUMPERS for his free throws. Really funny.

    • Impressive win, and somehow Purdue is able to win in Madison. They showed good fight after a lot of talk about lack of effort recently and the team not playing together as a unit, especially after getting shelled by Indiana twice.

I think that’s the first time I’ve seen a jumper free-throw, although I’ve seen it suggested on fan boards when a player is equal percentage from the field.

  26. Wow Arky loses to Pacific today, 4-3. That makes Arky 0 for the west coast and makes the pre-season rankings look silly.

  27. Scoreless going to the bottom of the third. Time for the offense to wake up. They’re getting pitches to hit just popping them up so far.

    • Golden Flashes! Older sister, who used to teach at OSU, is an associate dean there. Loved to see them beat the Ducks last year.

  28. 2-0 Beavers after the Beavers get fortunate on a missed call at first base, runners on first and second and 2 outs now

  29. Our buddies at Nicholls State held LSU scoreless on one hit……till the 6th inning.
Going to the seventh with LSU leading 2-0.

  30. Joey Matthews pinch hits, hits a ball off the plate and reaches as pitcher mishandles the ball, then Peterson hits a two run double. 5-0 Beavers

    • That’s what they were in high school and announced that’s what they’d be here. It’s just taken Davis a little longer to adjust to the pitching.

  31. Beavers win 14-0 and move to 12-0 on the season. Beavers pitchers didn’t allow an earned run the final 24 innings of the series and the bullpen hasn’t allowed a run this season.

  32. @OSUBeaversFB’s defensive coordinator Mark Banker coaching OSU hitters from the stands, and heckling opposing pitchers. Fans love it.

    This per Lindsay via twitter.

    • I guess I wonder what satisfaction there was in heckling pitchers that were clearly not doing well anyway. Pitchers on a team that came all the way across the country knowing full well they would probably get their butts kicked, a team which performed well early on in the series. A team which probably didn’t have a single fan in the stands. I guess if Beav fans want to be like the ucks in obnoxiousness . , , but it doesn’t seem like a good medium in which to compete. I’ll save my heckling for a Pac 12 game.

      • That’s fair enough.

I guess on one side you have people who revel in fandom no matter what form it takes. They would say what he did is just fine because he’s just a fan who is working over the opposition and has knowledge enough to help his own side.

Since baseball is infinitely more complex than football, it would be strange if Banker told us that we as fans had no right to do the same as he does when he’s a fan. Actually, that had nothing to do with baseball’s complexity. It only had to do with Banker’s hypocrisy.

        It is what it is.

        • It was the “fans loving it” that sounded like something from a coliseum movie. I wasn’t there so I have no idea how much Lindsay was editorializing (especially in a twitter). Indeed, it is what it is.

  33. Baseball America out with it’s poll, Beavs move up to #4. Pac12 has 6 teams in top 25.

The Horton effect continues as the ucks come in at #15 with 3 losses; they are the highest ranked 3 loss team and seven teams ranked behind them have 2 or less losses.
Strength of schedule?…a bit; Horton effect?…also a bit.
    Uncle Phil effect?…a bit.
Poll writers looking at a limited sample?…quite a bit.

    • I like Agnew, especially his off-field character and how he has represented the university. But alas, fumble-itis was his downfall. He’ll probably do just fine with his new team.
He doesn’t lose a year of eligibility either correct?

      • Too bad. Saw it coming when he didn’t play in the bowl game. Too much talent to ride the pine, but it would have been nice to have him as a backup who really knows the system. I find it interesting how a fumble by a RB is an unforgivable sin, but MR tolerates QB’s throwing picks right and left.
Jerry Kill, the coach at Minn, turned Southern Ill. into a lower division power when the were at the brink of eliminating football. Good luck to Malcom.

        • I feel bad for him, he comes in and wins the starting job as a true freshman, has a monster game and is talked about being the next great running back. Then gets buried in the depth chart because of injuries, inability pass block, and of course the fumbles (which I think could be solved if he didn’t try and reach the ball for an extra yard). But as Jason said, great character guy who represented the university very well. Best of luck to him.

          • Yeah I agree with you that he was the best pure runner, but wan’t up to par with Woods and Ward on the other attributes that are vital for running backs to have in this offense. Luckily we have a pretty good stable of backs, just needs to stay healthy.

    • What can Brown do for you?

Hope it works out well for Agnew, but there is depth and the future looks promising if Mattison can qualify. Didn’t realize Agnew’s bro was the FB at SIU.

Woods/Ward/Brown/ should be challenging to defend if the pass has to be respected.

It will be interesting to see who shows up for the rebrand – Payton? Barry? Jackson? Rodgers bros? Paea? High end achievers from baseball, wrestling, gymnastics?

Will they design something I actually want to buy and wear? I’d appreciate a t-shirt that looks like its for athletics, but reads “OSU Fisheris and Wildlife” instead of “OSU Football,” but somehow I don’t see that.

    • Depends. How nervous are you? How about a scale of 1 to 10?

And do you mean your nervous because of the negative potential outcomes (Beavers look like a joke), or nervous because you think its going to be positive (Beavers actually have cool gear without looking desperate for attention)?

Why is this a good time to unveil the logo given that they won’t be implemented until fall? I’m assuming they’ll do an early release for fans to buy products in the spring and summer, but that just means they’ll be showing up at spring sporting events (e.g. baseball games) with logos/gear the team itself doesn’t have, correct? Not necessarily a bad thing, just wondering about the timing of it.

      • I’d hate to be the one doing any sort of image unveiling for a company/team. No matter what, there’s going to be a certain number of people who will hate it.

I guess it’ll create some off-season buzz outside of the Northwest. It’s something new and different, which is a good thing.

  34. Nervous? YES – 8.

Was in Corvallis this weekend to visit my daughter and looked for some gear at Fred Meyers and downtown – not much left. The racks were cleared out for today.

The duck gear & graphics are very good – i hope that NIKE put their best team on our project and we end up with something to gets national attention. Thank goodness we have a baseball team and wrestling team to fall back on with the branding flops…..

    • Hopefully it won’t be that chick from the “Put a Beaver on it” billboard.

I’m worried that we will end up looking more like the Ducks rather than less like them. I’m not a fan of the multiple uniform/helmet combinations, but I’m sure that is what we will get.
