Agnew Transfers, New Logo Reveal, and Baseball team #4

158

Agnew's transfer is a win-win. He will get playing time, Beavs free up a scholarship and the depth chart. Chris Brown will likely get his playing time next year. Agnew was actually a very good runner, but could not block, stay healthy, or hold onto the ball.

All indications are the logo we saw here is the finished product or something close to it. I agree with those who said it looks better than the current logo on helmets but worse on merchandise. Overall a C+ effort. I'll take pretty much anything over the cartoon Beaver, even if it's a hockey logo with no message or identity. It should modernize OSU's look and be more attractive nationally. But I don't think the logo represents the essence of the University, and I fret I won't live long enough to see one that does. OSU administration and Nike reminds me of a patient/doctor relationship…OSU's branding is sick, Nike claims to have the cure, OSU is so desperate they submit to bad treatment.

Baseball team moves to #4 in the Baseball America Poll and USA Today poll. Nothing to add since it's a fair ranking. I thought the pre-season ranking was a bit high (I was thinking more like #15), but so far it is justified. Obviously conference play will be the true test. Gotta say that I am impressed with the bullpen thus far (my biggest concern). Clutch hitting and team speed are still suspect. Beavs lack a true leadoff hitter, too. That Dylan Davis maturing into a true cleanup hitter might gloss over some of the chinks.

    • They are predicting ominous? I don’t what kind of weather that is, but it sounds bad. If it is a greater than 50% chance of ominous, I’d stay home.

      • I’ve was hoping to take the 2nd half of the day off tomorrow for that game, but thinking it won’t be worth it either since there’s a good chance they call the game off due to the 50% chance of ominousness.

  1. I usually read this site but I’m not a frequent poster. According to my friends dad who works for Nike, there are three new helmets. Black and white helmets with the logo that was leaked a few weeks back along with an orange helmet that features a stripe down the middle and player’s number’s on the sides. The jerseys are a mystery to me though.

    • Love the helmet ideas. I thought the black ones with the new logo looked good and I love the idea with the players numbers on the sides. I’m hoping we have some nice jersey choices to go along with them.

      • The helmet designs you’ve seen (including the black one you mentioned liking) are just mock ups created by a Beaver fan on the Pure Orange blog. They’re not Nike designs. Sadly, they will probably be better looking than the ones Nike actually gives us.

I’m curious about other’s thoughts on the topic though, when it comes to the shiny metallic/chrome coloring used currently on the Duck’s helmets. Would you like to see similar chrome highlights on the Beav’s new helmet designs? I actually would, but not sure how it would fly with most Beaver fans.

        • I know those were mockups, but if that really was the new logo it’s not exactly going out on a limb to say they’ll put it on a black helmet.

Honestly, they could roll out the coolest uniforms in the history of uniforms and there would still be fans that don’t like them. Ill be happy as long as this ‘rebranding’ does its job: gets people talking about the Beavs nationally and, most importantly, gets big(ger?) time recruits interested.

    • Lots of mixed feelings — hopefully it will be something that is a positive in most ways.

Dont see three helmets as a lot, ….how many do the Ucks have?

My only prayer — please!–no downright UGLY combos, like the Ucks often come up with. ( ..and no turquoise blue).

  2. “Several current student-athletes will model the new uniforms in a fashion show setting and Benny Beaver will make his first appearance in his new attire.”

    Hooray, a fashion show. :^/

    • Project Runway comes to Corvallis. Hope Critchon and company have practiced walking in their stiletto heels. Don’t need sprained ankles before spring practice.

      • Remember when Nike rolled out the “Pro Combat” line and the guy in the OSU Giant Killers looked about 5’4″ 130?”

No offense on the height Rodgers bros…

This time they’d be better served to use a badass like Chricton…

  3. The actual logo looks better than that crudely reproduced version that keeps getting posted. Little things matter and some of the details aren’t as clean as the actual version.

    • Yeah that’s why I wrote ‘something close to it’. I figure it will be more refined but that general idea. Have you seen the actual?

      • I wasn’t trying to call you out on your statement, just making a point.

I have not seen the logo personally, but I have a friend at Nike who has and he says it’s pretty much the reason Nike has moved the reveal up – that distorted/deformed version makes the design look bad and half-assed.

Am told the design is better IRL.

Now, my personal opinion, I still think this logo is the logo that appears on maybe on one of the helmets but not on the primary.

        Just a guess there though.

  4. Angry, I’m with you on the logo if indeed the leaked one is for real. It befits a minor league sports team, not a institution of higher learning. The only mascot based logo I think is good is Penn State’s.
Leaked one looks the MN Wild’s (dumbest name in all sports)

Minnesota Wild Logo – Minnesota Wild – NHL

BTW, I herby claim the term “Sabre Tooth River Cat” as copywrited to Beavergopher

  5. Nike’s track record: shitty looking uniforms, faggot looking wings, support of the ‘ucks.

WTF has bobbyd gotten us into!

  6. I just love that you guys are excited for a fashion show and multiple uni’s and helmets. Classic! Perhaps we really aren’t so different after-all. When you implement that gimmick spread offense that is sure to fade away within a few years, you will have completed your journey.

Just poking fun – don’t take it seriously. You guys are good eggs. Besides, imitation is the truest form of flattery.

    • I’m not sure I would call what is being talked about on this site to be excitement. I would say it is trepidation with a little bit of curiosity. Very different than the typical Duck fan site.

    • What the hell are you talking about? Where on here do you see much besides anxiety over how this rebranding might get fucked up? Nike fucked it up for UO and Phil Knight loves the ducks. UO took the field at times with some of the ugliest unis ever

And dont hold your breath waiting for Riley to implement a spread offense. Not much chance of imitation here. ….and what offense will UO have now that the Chipper is gone?

    • Ha, it better be free. If for some stupid reason it isn’t, they’ve tweeted out other locations where you can catch the unveiling.

      Beaver Athletics ?@beaverathletics

Unable to catch the live stream? @KEZI9 & @KATUNews will have live coverage tonight, as will @FoxSportsPDX w/ @BeaverNationLiv #ReBeaved

  7. The gloves are ridiculous. But I like the jerseys, especially the football jerseys. The helmet with the orange jerseys is very sweet.

Even if you don’t like the new jerseys and beaver, they are all upgrades from our current gear, so it’s hard to complain too much. There are also a lot of subtle touches, like the arrows near the collars, and the back of the white basketball jerseys have a subtle inset pattern that looks very good and modern without being super flashy like UO.

    B/B+

  8. All the new stuff is an upgrade.

I’m guessing younger people will like it and older people won’t. Good thing no one care what old people think!

  9. Couldn’t really get that great of a look at the football uniforms. All the other uni’s looked pretty similar to the old ones to me except with the new logo.

  10. From what I could tell I think the football uniforms will be pretty cool looking. Horrible job lighting the stage though. Wish we got a better look at the helmets.

  11. Was hard to get a good look at the uniforms with the video feed because of the darkness in that room. Wish they had cranked up the lights a little.

I like the block font they are using. I don’t like the “Beavers” logo though. I feel like with a name like Beavers, you really shouldn’t accentuate the “V” in that name. Queue the va-jayjay jokes.

I’ll reserve judgement on the uniforms until I can a higher quality picture of them. One think I found interesting was the plaid design using the word “Beavers” meshed into it. That makes it more of a trademarked feature rather than a simple color design.

    • What the fuck, that stripe looks way too wide. Something from the 80’s, not minimal like the giant killer uni’s.

  12. Here’s football
    ?@Coach_Riley
With the helmets, can’t wait to get these guys out on the field in these uniforms! #ReBeaved pic.twitter.com/R9E4jHrHne

    • Wish the white was sail like the Giant Killers. The above photo shows all the football unis and the helmets. Also wish they would have thinned the stripes a little as many people wanted.

  13. Here is a better lit rendition from professional photograph
Nike and OSU are doing it big. Here’s the new fresh OSU uniforms. #justdoit pic.twitter.com/JXMMklgWBL

  14. Mike Barrett has this from the alternative jersey (all orange) helmet
    @blazermb
Pretty cool alternate helmet for the Beavs. Not easy to sit on that pic until tonight. #ReBeaved pic.twitter.com/LdkGOYEz4P

  15. The football unis do look like an update of a classic.

I like the font, color bump on the helmet, and wordmark.

Not so sold on the logo. The helmet mock ups on the interwebs are better than the actual, maybe Nike will take note and tweak going forward. Is that the logo on baseballs caps? Ugh!

I didn’t see anything any possible Reser field updates. Will they do something different with the endzones?

    • It would look quite dumb to have this whole rebranding and not do anything about the midfield logo and endzone design. I’m not sure if they have to tear up the turf or just paint over it to change it but I’d assume, and hope, they will do something.

      • The midfield logo has already been stripped, I was more curious if they were doing anything unique/new with the endzones

  16. The one thing I don’t like about new uniforms are the face masks. Don’t like the multi-color. But I liked all of the uniforms for the other teams, really like the font and the numbers. Didn’t like the beaver script though.

  17. I like the font, and story of the knawed notch on the lettering from the beaver bite. I really like the numbers and how they look. I like the white basketball jersey’s with the black numbers, and the net and beaver imprinted on the back. I like the dual colored men’s soccer jersey. I like the stripe down the middle of the face mask. I like the all white football jersey and the stripes that are on the deltoid and not on the shoulder. The white jersey’s look tough. The other ones I have to see in another lighting.

I don’t like the fat stripe down the middle of the, and I don’t like the logo on both sides of the helmet. I don’t like the logo’s eye it looks like the beaver is stoned or tripping on shrooms. I don’t hate the numbers on the helmet, because I like the font, but I am not crazy about them.

    Where’s the baseball jersey’s????

  18. I don’t like it. Not as bad as the sports bra era, but still not good. I would love to see what Under Armor could have come up with. I don’t think this unifies or simplifies anything. I would prefer old school Benny, but I also prefer the Angry Beav to this second class product. To me this is OS getting the “B” team treatment. I don’t want OS to be like the Ducks, but I also don’t want to be like a minor league team in a Podunk market. The thing that stinks the most is that we will have to live with this garbage for at least 5 years.

I know some will like this change, but can anyone say that this makeover is at all a game-changer on the recruiting trail? I was interested to see if my kids would like this change. I was careful to let them see it without comment from me to sway their opinion. None of the three cared for it. They liked the script and even the lettering (which was a fairly minor change). How much did we pay to get the interlocking OS? Somebody should lose their job, and by somebody I mean Bob Decarolis.

  19. I think we fared well, sans the gloves. Once we see these on the field, we will be pleased, in my opinion. I thought the basketball jersey’s were the weakest with the running unis being the best. Football unis were good- I think they nailed the shoulders and the overall orange ones.

  20. I could give two shits about uniforms, it’s all a byproduct of time, place and current trends. I care about results on the field and that’s it.

  21. Phil Knight just pulled another fast one on us. These are terrible. I can’t believe we have to wear these for the next few years. I would much rather go back to the old uni’s with a blank helmet. I feel like we belong in a cartoon.

    • I didn’t mind the uniforms the past couple years, the rebranding was something I never cared for. Ultimately I care far more about on-field results than uniforms though.

    • The logo is flat out terrible. A plain O or OS would have been much better. Will anyone really buy a shirt with this on it? I thought the point was to get away from the cartoon look.

      • I think it’s meant to be a conversation starter. ” What the fuck is that thing on your shirt?”
“A Beaver.” ” Looks like a Saber Tooth Tiger to me.” ” Me too, but Phil Knight says thats what a Beaver looks like.” ” I thought you were the Ducks?”

  22. My first reaction to the first photo on this link:

    http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2013/3/4/4063318/new-oregon-state-logo-uniforms

Is that they look like they’re playing SpaceMan Spiff or UltraBots or some goddamned thing with some welding helmets left out in the garage. Both the black and white helmets look silly in my opinion.

Glad the players like them, hope they look better on the field and grow on me. I will care less about them if they go 8-0 to start the year.

  23. The Ducks have won the battle. They have a simple classic, logo that is recognizable nationwide.
We have a critter that nobody will know what the hell it is other than the hard corps fans.
They should have used the picture of Sara Jean Underwood’s ass posted on BeaverByte’s site as the new logo. That would have made a real splash! We went from bad to updated bad.
Other than the muskrat, I liked our old football unis.

  24. Here are the standards from Nike. I wish they would have scoped the standards broadly without giving too much away, decision criteria development before design is an important approach.

My comments in CAPS except title of course:

“NEW OREGON STATE BRAND IDENTITY STANDARDS

A refined, contemporary primary Beaver mark to be used consistently by all intercollegiate athletic teams.
A custom typeface and numeral set.
    Primary and secondary color palettes.

    Primary Identity – Beaver Logo

A refined Beaver logo will serve as the primary representation of the brand, and will be used as the main identifying device for Oregon State Athletics. The new mark is a contemporary evolution of the current Beaver mark, and supports the goal of respecting the past while representing the future. The use of the OS logo will remain part of the University’s overall program, but will be phased out by Athletics.

FAILED HERE. BROAD AGREEMENT THIS LOOKS LIKE A BORROWED HOCKEY OR ARENA FOOTBALL LOGO. PARKS CANADA WINS, PAWS DOWN.

Secondary Identity – Typography and Word Marks

Block typography has been a fundamental part of OSU’s athletic heritage and speaks to the no-nonsense, hard-working nature of Oregon State athletes, coaches and fans. It is honest, strong, imposing – the perfect foundation for the future of Oregon State Athletics typography. Consistent usage of the typography will support the primary logo and ensure clarity and distinction in all Athletics communications.

WELL DONE ON THE TYPOGRAPHY; STRONG, SUSTAINABLE.

    Primary Colors

A consistent color palette will allow for instant team identification and enhance the overall impact of the brand identity. Orange — a distinctive color within the Pac-12 Conference —black and white are the official colors for Oregon State Athletics and will remain a constant on all of the school’s intercollegiate teams.

    Secondary Colors

A metallic bronze secondary color has been introduced, representing strength and integrity and draws inspiration from the well-used machinery utilized in the timber industry. The addition of bronze brings depth to the existing Oregon State color palette; it will be reserved for limited use only.

COLORS ARE PRETTY WELL DONE IN MY OPINION. I HOPE THE CONSISTENCY IS ENFORCED, INCLUDING IN FAN PRODUCTS. I SUSPECT IT WILL NOT BE.

    Tartan Print

A custom tartan print has been designed to represent the Oregon State Beavers and enrich the overall identity package. The notches in the thick lines reference how beavers use their sharp front teeth to cut down trees, and the white pinstripes are composed of the Oregon State and Beavers wordmarks. The tartan is reserved for limited use only.”

NOT SURE ABOUT THIS? EXAMPLES? WHAT ARE STANDARDS FOR APPROPRIATE, “LIMITED USE?”

Overall, I’m unsurprisingly underwhelmed. The typography and colors look fairly sustainable, the rest, not so much.

      • Too funny. Yeah, I know that comes across as arrogant (plus the caps for differentiation looks like I’m shouting), but I do think that decision criteria and processes are interesting, and I know they appropriately developed and scoped them with the school and probably select players/alum. I think it would have been fun to know the criteria, and then wait and see what the result was.

  25. I liked all the non football uniforms and I might be one of the few that doesn’t really mind the new logo. I won’t be running out to buy a new set of clothes, but when I buy something new I won’t be upset having that logo on my clothing.

    • “but when I buy something new I won’t be upset having that logo on my clothing.”

Your statement would likely elicit a “We nailed it!” response from BDC…

    • Universal values. “The Bullfrog” by Henry Gibson. Is sustainable bronze a color? Oy Vey, the muscles on those rendered models. Kids are attracted to cool logos as moths are attracted to light. Nothing wrong with change. Change is good. But please do not equate this change with the meaning of life and other Nike Psychobabble.

  26. BTW Angry “Agnew was actually a very good runner, but could not block, stay healthy, or hold onto the ball.” is one of the most unintentionally funny statements you’ve ever written (and it is accurate).

Its almost like me saying I could start for the beavers if I were big, fast, athletic, and talented…

  27. Imo the logo is getting too close to looking like the faggot wings of the ‘ucks.

    The helmets are butt ugly.

Way to fucking go bobby d you dip shit son of a bitch.

    • The new image is not an embarrassment to Oregon State, but you are you ignorant fuck. Grow up, read a book and learn to express yourself without words like ‘faggot’.

    • Lol all it takes for this forum to become PC all of a sudden is the word faggot? Yawn.

I do disagree about the helmets though. I think they’re a good combination of edgy without being too flashy and duckish. You had to know something like this was coming. It’s Nike after all.

  28. This is a good site to read comments to get a daily fix on Oregon State football, but the meeting of the minds is clearly out of its element when it comes to opinions on the new uniforms and logo. So many irrational comments. The idea that the parks logo would be better is laughable. I’m likely biassed but these may be the best looking uniforms in the conference. Seems like many of you just don’t like the fact that our mascot is the Beaver. If thats the case it may have saved you a lot of stress by choosing a different college.
