Beav fielders look like they're wearing 1930s bucklebacks out there. You'd think the gloves would be broken in by now; slap some lanolin on 'em, boys.

Go Beavs.

  1. Apparently you made the trip to Westwood, good for ya!
Do you plan to attend all 3 games?
    GO BEAVS, bring Barnes home!

  2. Beavers lead 1-0 after a 1/2 inning, but after getting the 1-0 lead and a runner on 2nd and no outs, Beavers executed extremely poorly and don’t get the 2nd run.

  3. Bruins miss an opportunity, runners at 2 and 3 with one out; Boyd strikes out the tail end of their order to escape.
To the t3, need some offense, Hendrix can start it.

  4. JRod-Keyes team up to end the 5th by getting the attempted stealer out. Pretty good D so far tonight, got to start some O before there are two outs.
Lets see if the 6th still belongs to the good guys.

  5. Now the D falls apart. E on Keyes and E on Casper; JRod drops the ball on a play at the plate. Wow.
    3-1 Bruins, 2 out runner on 2nd.
Top of the order will come to the plate in the 8th for the Beavs, but, must get out of the 7th first.

  6. Keyes a diving catch in RF, makes up in a way for the E. But the E resulted in an unearned run, so not a good trade-off.
3-1 Bruns going to the 8th, Plutko done for the night.

    • I was at the game and that error was not a “routine” play. The ball came up on Keyes with a bad hop and he handled it best he could.

  7. Tough strikeout there by Hayes. Defense killing this team again. Sounds like there are a ton Beavers fans at the game. Conforto has done nothing for us today. At least they scratched out one run, inning would’ve been much different if Peterson would have beaten out that sac bunt. Things not looking good.

  8. Game 1 of the series was critical and the bats didn’t show up. Especially with no Tyler Smith, when Conforto doesn’t produce this team just can’t score runs

  9. Losing Grace hurts on the recruiting front, but he was also in charge of the scout team in practice, so on an x’s and o’s front, maybe it’s not a bad thing. Robinson’s at the Final Four so maybe he can pick up a good x’s and o’s guy, particularly on defense and someone with connections outside of Princeton/Brown/Northwestern. The ship is not sinking, but it needs to be turned in the right direction fast!

      • What I meant was someone that CR didn’t pick up from his connections to those three schools. Maybe someone with Pac-12 experience. I like Bob Cantu and don’t know if Enfield will keep him at SC. Grace did want out of Corvallis as he’s been looking for other jobs for a couple of years, but I don’t think he’ll be a major loss for the program like others think.

    • Curious – it appears at least a couple of other schools were interested in him. Why?
Questions: recruiting only – AAU connections, what are his strong suits in terms of teaching basics, any x and o abilities?

      • I personally didn’t (don’t) like the guy… at least here. I got the feeling from him that he hated Corvallis and OSU, and maybe that’s why I didn’t like him. He’s been trying to get out of town for a couple years, and the x’s and o’s showed in how the players responded to him.

You’d also never think he had any recruiting abilities if you talked to him. Maybe because it was obvious he hated Oregon when he talked. I guess what people don’t realize is that recruiting “ability” in hoops has for years meant recruiting “access,” and football is becoming similar with the same street agent shit.

        • Thx. Shall I conclude then that he’s been looking, it’s not as if he’s so great that he was being sought ? Let’s hope someone incredible – even if it’s a stepping stone – but an enthusiastic one – can come aboard.

          • Yes… he was looking. Irons in the fire for him were also at UNM and USC.

            He was not staying.

I’m thinking he wants to end up back in Phoenix. And he may get his chance once Sendek gets fired next year (if Carson goes to the draft… which he really should do). The guy just seems so pretentious about being in Corvallis. And I know that’s only a peripheral view. But sometimes that view gets voiced. And sometimes the head man hears something about one of his dudes a couple years ago (or more recent) and suggests he leave.

You give me a pick, I take Litzenberger. I’ve heard someone suggest Cantu. That’s nice. I think he did one helluva job as an interim. And I think he deserves a head job. I’ve also heard a friend (who knows nothing about hoops… obviously) suggest Tim Grgurich. Oh… if only Tex Winter wasn’t dead… we’d be Tim’s destination for sure. That makes more sense than the suggestion. Trust Me. False death would be better than a lie.

  10. Wow B-ball news. Any chance BDC is gone before the end of next season when we will be looking for a new coach? I have to admit the whole process is kind of fun for the fan base. Goph’s hired Pitino’s kid and he hit a home run at the press conference. Sounds just like his dad.

      • We=Beavers

Love the Pitino hire. New AD at Minn is great. Old one made BDC seem like a Steve Jobs.

Hoping BDC does not make the next B-ball hire at OSU.

  11. BDC probably gets fired if CR can’t get it done. I’m still supporting Robinson, but barely. I also know that BDC gets canned by Ed Ray and I don’t think the guy has the balls to do that. It will be interesting to see who CR gets to replace Grace.

  12. Beavers get leadoff man on but a strikeout, caught stealing DP comes immediately afterwards. Beavers aren’t executing and haven’t been for a while

  13. Ray doesn’t care and I wish he’d just come out and admit it. Ed Ray doesn’t care about OSU athletics. As for Robinson and Co., expectations are going to be high next year to succeed and get the program back to the dance and they should be. Talent is not an issue (with the exception of Starks), but CR’s inability to close out these games is concerning. One more year or it’s time to move on. Now on to baseball!!

    • It is concerning how many games the Beavers lost late, but I think with that the players have to win a couple of those close games to get confidence that they can win those. Like with the USC game, they were getting it done on offense but then Moreland has a brain fart late to lose them the game. They found different ways to lose games that they should have won. Craig just really needs to work with them and get them to realize that they need to protect the ball better. They do that and some of those losses become wins.

    • Peterson started things after two out, nice to see Jansen get a clutch hit.
Really wish we could have seen the play at the plate where Barnes was tagged out.

  14. Groundout by Peterson back to the pitcher but that isn’t too bad. Runner in scoring position for Barnes who has been swinging the bat well this weekend

  15. How ’bout that, Espi taking a page from JRod’s book, throws out runner at third to end the 6th. Still 2-0 Beavs.
Wouldn’t mind seeing Moore pulled during the next inning.

  16. Bono of UCLA tries to steal third with 2 outs for whatever reason and is gunned down at third by Jake Rodriguez. 2-0 Beavers after 7 innings.

  17. Smith due up 4th in the ninth, what will Casey do about that? Of course he will stay in, need his D in the b9. I’m thinking, depends on situation, either let him go up to just look at pitches or (don’t know what doc says) maybe bunt.
    Ideas?

  18. Do ya still think Smith is cleared to swing?
At any rate, nice SAC; now Peterson needs a clutch hit……….or a lucky hopper!!
    Beavs up 4-0

    • What is his deal? Casey mentioned players were swinging for the fences and only concerned about their personal stats not the team. Do you think he was talking about him? It sounded like he had very poor at bats.

    • Toss up. Grant Watson is who I believe is starting, he got killed by ASU last Sunday. Wetzler wasn’t too bad last Saturday, just got no defensive help. Even if he doesn’t pitch too well, I’d like to see Taylor Starr and Painton relieve him. Offense will need to score some runs, would be nice if Conforto-Davis-Hayes show up.

  19. Peterson doesn’t bunt for some reason, flies out to RF. Surprised Casey didn’t just have him lay one down considering how often he beats those out and it moves a runner up

  20. 1-2-3 inning for Wetzler to start the game. He’s done this before, would be nice if he finally came out and delivered the remainder of his outing.

  21. Conforto with his first basehit of the series to open the 3rd. Gets to 3b on Davis’ single and comes home on Jake’s FC. 3-0 Beavs.

  22. Wetzler gives up a leadoff single and a double but gets out of the inning unscathed helped in part by Esposito throwing out the runner trying to steal 2b. End 3, Beavs 3-0

    • Another nice throw by Esposito, maybe he is gonna take more than a page from JRod’s book. Good to see, almost certainly saved a run.

  23. With the rt hander coming in for UCLA there is less reason to keep Hayes in the dugout. Bringing him in would likely help D as well.
This is the day for slumps to end for the middle of the Beavs order, would like to see Hayes get his chance.

  24. 4-0 Beavers after 4 innings. Wetzler is getting it done today. Just 3 baserunners allowed through 4 innings and no runs.

  25. Yikes, the Beavs get runners to 2b and 3b with one out and don’t score, though the bruins get a little help from the 3b ump on the strikeout to Hayes

  26. Wouldn’t you know it. A long inning where the Beavs don’t get it done and Wetzler isn’t sharp and gives up a dinger to a batter who gets his first hit as a bruin

  27. Need to finish this out. ducks lead forks, 13-3 in the 8th. Would set up the conference leaders for Tuesday’s non-conference game.

  28. 4-1 Beavers after 7 innings. Strong start from Wetzler which is something he badly needed. Time to tack on a few runs and let the bullpen finish this

  29. The fork’s pitching didn’t show up today as the ducks pound out 20 hits and win 16-3. It doesn’t look like anybody in the top ten lost today. usc takes down the trees 7-6. Zona leads cal 5-2 at the end of 8.

  30. Smith bunts a 3-2 pitch foul with Hayes on 2b to end the top of the 9th. Schultz to face three left handed batters in b9

  31. In the last 3 seasons the Beavers are 0-3 vs UCLA in games where Adam Plutko has started. 6-0 in games started by all other UCLA pitchers.

    • Sounds like his fastball velocity was down from where it typically is, didn’t have his best stuff and battled and got the job done. Got to be a confidence booster for him.

      • Parker relayed an observation by Boyd that there was a lot more action on Ben’s pitches today, the most he’d had all season.
He really needed the confidence boost, good to see him get it.

        • Yeah, he had a great slider going, needed it with having a mid 80’s fastball today. If he can get the velocity back up to 89-90 with the great slider he flashed today, he’s gonna be tough and with Boyd and Moore, can make the rotation be what we thought it would be in the beginning of the year.

          • I tend to trust Aaron Fitt a bit more with how guys looked on the radar gun and Sorenson missing some obvious details is concerning. Good news for the Beavers though is Tyler Smith will be back in the starting lineup on Friday against Utah and will be ready to go. This puts Peterson back at 2nd where he belongs, Keyes back at 3rd and Jake behind the plate full time again. This gives a tremendous boost to OSU’s offense and defense and Jace Fry will be back very soon. OSU is loaded with arms.

  32. OT – Brennan on Wheaton, had he redshirted:

“Even if you watch the plays Markus Wheaton made as a freshman, he was still not a good football player,” Brennan said. “He was a good athlete. He BECAME a good football player. I mean, can you imagine if we had Markus for another year, if he had been able to redshirt and then played? Holy hell, it’d be crazy!””

    http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/04/notes_and_quotes_leftovers_fro_1.html

      • Honestly, I don’t think it was a huge mistake. Every coach when they lose a playmaker want him for an extra year. My thought with redshirting is if the freshman is in a position battle with a upper classmen and it’s a toss up, redshirt the freshman. If the freshman is better than the upper classman, play the freshman. The best players should be on the field. Does anyone recall who Wheaton beat out in the depth chart?

        • Think he beat out Catchings, but he was the 4th or 5th receiver and did a lot of his damage with the game in hand. I just didn’t think it was worth it to blow the redshirt 4 years ago. He wasn’t a starter and wasn’t gonna make a big impact, everyone knew that.

          • Well I was able to find a depth chart, the internet can be a great thing sometimes. The one I found had him 5th at the flanker receiver position. But I am guessing that this was a pre-season because he was so low on it.

I should have made my post earlier a little more clear, your best players should be in the two-deep depth chart, regardless of year in school, because you are an injury away and you want your best replacement. And my guess is that he was considering I never really heard of any of the players at the position.

            We had Reggie Dunn?

            http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindbeaversbeat/2009/02/finally_an_oregon_state_footba.html

          • I am not so sure Wheaton would be sticking around if he had another year. I do’t think he can help his draft stock much by another year. He has to go get it. The RS that annoyed me was Gavin Andrews… although he might be gone after 4 years anyway.

      • Then change the name to BYU Corvallis campus. Hiding all your freshmen so that you have an age advantage is junk. Does Pat Casey hide all of his freshmen or does he allow them to compete?

    • If Fry can be back in a couple weeks, that would be big. He would probably get midweek starts and gradually will build his arm strength up. If Wetzler is struggling towards the end of the regular season, Fry would be able to step right in to the weekend rotation.

    • Good stuff. To me this is the most encouraging bullet:

Sean Mannion spent most of his time with the 1’s today, and Cody Vaz was working with the 2’s/scout team almost exclusively.

Also nice to read about Storm Woods’ continued development. I’m really excited about the RB group. I think Woods will have a big season and I don’t remember ever having this kind of depth at RB behind our usual work horse back.

    • Thanks for the link. Nothing very good in there on Harrington or Boom. I notice Terron Ward isn’t mentioned at all, there has been a real focus lately on Storm Woods.

If you have an hour to listen, here is a link to a discussion between B.Sprague and Machado (don’t hit me, Angry). They single out Woods as an emerging vocal leader at practice.

I too look forward to a report from Silver, history indicates it’ll be worth the wait.

      • Angry’s man Harrington will never turn into Joe Montana part 2 if he can’t hold onto the snap.
Better go play catch with Ritchie Angry.

  33. any update on if mattision is going to qualify? any news on why enger was out? bays will be a stud, but we need enger this year.
