Non-conference Civil War baseball at 4:05PT today. The game will be on the Pac-12 network. In other words, it might as well not be on TV at all.
Also, I was reading this on Delva. Between him being fat, slow to understand the playbook, and his atrocious Twitter page, I'm thinking this guy could be the next JC bust.
You’d think Joe would have been in contact with these guys during that period of time between signing day and spring term. I think the extra weight is as much on him as it is on the players.
I’m more concerned with the LB group. In the Scout article yesterday, Riley had this to say about them:
“Well I think that the two outside guys have played a lot and had really good off-seasons’,” Riley said. “They worked hard and I feel good about them. The other guys, well they are in the middle and competing – we’ve got to figure out some good depth for D.J. and Michael on the outside. So the middle linebacker and the back-up outside linebacker deal is wide, wide open.”
Money quote “…the back-up outside linebacker deal…” Haven’t seen that “deal” mentioned before by Riley. His deals are so versatile, they can be used to discuss almost anything.
I’ve read mixed reviews on Delva. A quote about the two new DT’s from Riley makes it seem like they are playing well “I think they are fitting in really well early on, which is encouraging, they are still learning a new (defensive) language. But as far as their play- the nice thing about them is that they have experience” Joe’s comments have a little more substance because he is with the players more often than a head coach.
From both the articles it sounds like they are the best of the interior linemen we have and are playing pretty well, but still have a lot to take care of by the time fall camp comes around.

GO BEAVS!!
Really looking forward to today’s game. Go Beavs!
What’s the word on Kyle Peko? Is he going to be here in the fall?
I hate reading Micah Hatfield’s name. Every spring/fall it’s the same, “he’s going to make an impact this year!” If we’re counting on a 180lb injury-prone WR from Lake Oswego we’re in trouble. Cooks is going to see double coverage all season.
He will for sure be no Markus Wheaton. But I can see him being a very annoying receiver for defenses, just by finding ways to get open and catching the ball. He does need to stay healthy though. And if Cooks is getting doubled all year that there is single coverage somewhere.
He’s up to 180? Maybe he put 20 pounds on hanging out with Delva….
Hatfield played well last season when healthy. He’s at least a weapon with good hands. Can’t count on him for consistent #1 team reps, but in a pinch he’s a good option to have out there.
MR should have signed another WR named McCoy.
Not the type of “family atmosphere” he’s trying to promote.
The lack of signing a plug and play JC LB this season may bite us in the butt.
PAC 12 TV=Sucks!
FTD!
Go Beavs!
Civil Bore or Civil Snore baseball today. Oh Boy!!!
Four + hours of nothing, nut scratching, yawning, spitting and an occasional 20 seconds of “action”. Real sport less than five months away. JB
Taylor Starr is getting the start today. Glad to see him getting the opportunity. Child will probably relieve him.
http://oregonstate.scout.com/2/1282177.html
A pretty interesting article on the impact that the top juco defensive tackles had on their respected teams last season. Good news for us is that we have at least two already in school and participating in practice, still waiting for one more (anyone have an update on Peko?). The article makes it seem like if you don’t get a Stephen Paea type player then they won’t make an impact. I don’t see it that way, don’t get me wrong I would love if all these new dts became Stephen Paeas. but if the players coming in can have a type of season similar or better than what Castro and Saumalo had last year where they played solid football and did a good job of not allowing offensive linemen to get to the second level of the defense and let our stand up players run freely, the defense should be in good shape.
Solid first inning from Starr.
Dylan Davis strikes out with runners on the corners and 1 out. Really hasn’t been very good in those spots all year.
Does anyone have a streaming radio station link? Isn’t it sad that it’s easier to find a link to a radio station then an actual radio in my office? I guess since I haven’t found one of either, it may not be true. I’m tempted to go around from cube to cube looking…
http://www.radio84.com/
Thanks!
Bases loaded and 2 outs for Jake Rodriguez
Jake Rodriguez really worked the walk there. Down 0-2 and forced the walk. 1-0 Beavers. Huge at-bat to pick up his teammate, Dylan Davis.
1-0 Beavers after an inning
Starr is being really wild this inning. Hits a batter and 2 wild pitches
Hits another batter. Really needs to settle down and make his pitches.
Through facing 8 batters, the ducks have only put one ball in play.
He’s been terrible
Big surprise, duck batter leans into get hit by pitch after getting down 0-2.
I don’t see why umps don’t call it more often. It can be pretty obvious sometimes that a guy is moving into the ball but it is rarely called correctly.
Worst part about that run is the Ducks didn’t earn the run. 2 hits batters and now 3 wild pitches in the same inning. Starr is not sharp.
Throw a damn strike. 3 wild pitches in the inning!
Make that 4 and it costs the Beavs another run. Jake Rodriquez has gotta be pissed for having to chase after so many shitty pitches.
Starr has good stuff, when he makes them put it in play they’re struggling to do anything with it. Stop hitting them and stop throwing pitches in the dirt every other pitch and he’ll be in good shape.
Trying to remember the last time a Beavers pitcher had 4 wild pitches in an inning. For those watching it, how much is Jake to blame for it?
It’s funny how people are still holding out hope for Starr. It’s year six, folks, and he’s always been a disaster. Nothing is going to change. Yes, he threw hard and had great stuff at one point.
I feel like we’re going to do this with Casper, too. He’ll hit a home run once per month and tease people/reignite hope. Max Gordon is a better ball player than Taylor Starr. This game isn’t about stature, “stuff”, etc.
He was pretty solid last year and had a 1.93 ERA in Pac-12 play last year. Came in with a 3.12 ERA into tonight’s game. That is not a disaster. Sure he’s thrown a ton of wild pitches tonight, but a “disaster”? C’mon.
His career, as a whole, has been a disaster. Every time the guy takes the mound I assume a loss.
Is this freaking little league? 2 HBP & 4 Wild Pitches in one inning. Starr just gave them 2 runs, they didn’t do anything to get those runs.
so damn sick of starr. the second inning would”ve been embarassing for an eight grade pitcher, let alone a starter for a top 10 college team.
Can the guy just get a 1-2-3 inning? Back to back 2 out singles and the Beavs are in trouble again.
Make it 3 straight singles.
3-1 Oregon
Beavs need to bring in Davis here, gotta get some momentum back.
Just tuned in. WTF happened?
let’s hope that isn’t Casper’s only hit for the week.
Starr is not a star apparently.
Terrific execution by the Beavers in that 4th inning. Would be nice to see a lot more of that. As usual, Barnes continues to get it done out of the leadoff spot.
Beavers now 1 for 8 with RISP
Tony Bryant is dealing. Another easy inning. Tied at 3 after 5 1/2 innings.
Brandon Jackson comes in to strike out Healy and get Tolman to hit into a DP. Bullpen is getting it done tonight. 3-3 after 6 1/2 innings.
Might of been said already, but I saw on the PAC-12 broadcast that Seferian-Jenkins, UW’s big TE got a DUII and has been kicked off the indefinitely. They then go on to say that “he has already began the process to rejoin the team.”
http://www.seattlepi.com/sports/huskies/article/UW-star-Austin-Seferian-Jenkins-charged-with-DUI-4421313.php
They asked Chip Kelly for advice?
gutless
The Beavers’ offense has been shutdown since the 4th. Tied after 8 innings at 3
5-3 Ducks on Payne’s triple. This one is pretty much over.
And theyve only got 1 out. That sucked….
Beavers blowing key opportunities early in the game came back to bite them.
Duck pitcher has an ironic mullet. He’s a little too feminine looking to pull it off
Beavers lose 6-3. Oh well. OSU has looked like crap all year during their midweek games.
Edwin Delva= angry’s 2013 Keith Pankey.
Nah I don’t think he’ll be THAT useless. I’m just hoping Peko is good enough to start that way Delva can be used as a rotational player instead of an every down starter.
Per Eggers, Hautau broke his hand today and will sit out remaining Spring practice. Hope he spends this time learning the new defensive language.
Crap.
How is Eggers so ridiculously better informed than any other reporter? Is he just the only guy that Riley gives the “scoop” to, or are they just not asking the right questions?
Maybe a better question…how does a whole circus of beat reporters attend a practice and write up a practice report…and omit that a key player broke his hand? Meanwhile Eggers (who most likely wasn’t there) gets the real headline.
Eggers went to Corvallis High School with Riley. Kerry’s dad, John Eggers, was also OSU SID probably when Riley’s dad, Ed, was an assistant with OSU.
Bud Riley.
Not Jack?
heh heh…
And don’t forget Locey went to school with those guys too. He was a couple years younger, but his family had been associated with OSU for a lot longer.
That’s one thing that kinda burns me about GP getting in the Hall for hoops (in a “purist’s” recollections sorta way). We should have at least one grad in Canton. Percy Locey should have a bust there.
And I guess while I’m ranting…
Jean Saubert should be in the US Olympic HoF as well.
I also think a reason is that the Portland tribune only puts out a paper once a week I believe, so his reports are usually longer. But he publishes a lot better info, especially on players that don’t get alot of publicity, but who we want to hear about like this last article vanderveen and hasty, Schnell or cliff rarely show that depth in their writing.
To build off what you were saying 2 days ago about reporters not name “Eggers” being slow to report stories, today we get this tweet from Lindsay Schnell
“Lindsay Schnell ?@LindsayRae19 1h Evidently juco DT S Hautau, who had been a projected starter, broke his hand Tuesday at practice & will miss the rest of spring practice.”
Solid work Lindsay. I’m sure she would have gotten the story out a couple of days ago had Hautau tweeted the message to her directly when it happened.
Eggers has a nice recap of spring so far. This year’s team is like a porn star, hard working and with lots of holes to fill.
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/135773-osu-football-notes-jc-tackle-breaks-hand-beavers-seek-another-qb-recruit-vanderveen-progresses-and-more
And will probably get gang-banged by the Ducks. Can’t even beat them in baseball. At least we didn’t get
a spring blizzard…………….oh wait.
Thanks for this link as well. After reading the link you provided to Scout in the last thread its good to see a report which mentions Terron Ward. Riley’s using him, even a little bit, at FB is encouraging to me. I see an ability there to move the pile which is an area the Beavs haven’t exploited lately.
For those interested… I really like the direction the Leadership Institute takes for SAs at OSU. I really wish we had things like this when I was a student rather than leaving it up to student clubs and orgs to bring in one speaker or maybe a seminar sometime during the year. It’s also cool that this is open to the community at large.

Well… I guess it wasn’t a big deal, but….
Cal did the whole re-brand thing too. I like the logo. The unis are better than the pointy-stripey things they’ve been wearing for the last ten (?) years. But the font just sucks. It looks like the Gigs’ font.
And no black unis? Didn’t they get the memo?
http://blog.pac-12.com/cal-introduces-new-logo-visual-identity/
OT… I voted for Buehler last fall because Brown would not do these (and similar) things. What the hell woke her up and made her start to work?
http://thevotingnews.com/state-may-be-1st-with-automatic-voter-registration-govtech/
–and–
http://www.1190kex.com/articles/portland-local-news-123543/are-colleges-wasting-your-tuition-and-11173492/
The audit makes sense, if carried out in an unbiased and professional manner. I’ll applaud Ms Brown on this one, she seems to be headed in the right direction.
As for automatic voter registration, can’t buy into that. Mail in ballots are bad enough; whatever happened to a “secret” ballot? This Beav doesn’t believe individuals who won’t register on their own and walk themselves down to the local schoolhouse to vote (or go to the effort to get an absentee ballot) are going to make quality/informed/independent voting decisions.
I think I’ve heard most of the arguments about “access”, etc. I’m not sold.
Now apply that logic to gun ownership… you know… one of those rights that isn’t so engrained in common law that it was assumed in the writing of the Constitution. It actually needed to be amended to include it.
Not only should there not be any “infringement” upon US citizens regarding voting. The government should go out of its way to include its citizens as it does for other Constitutional guarantees (apparently excepting some minus-Ninth Amendment rights).
If these people are truly lazy, they just won’t vote.
Duh?
And what’s wrong with mail-in ballots?
Most people trust them more than the voting booth itself nowadays. And they are justified.
I trust the post office more than I trust my secretary of state to get my vote counted. But that’s kinda the point of the first post. I’m starting to actually trust my SoS here in Oregon because she’s starting to do something. And that something is for me and my neighbors, not some out of state financier. I voted for the guy I knew would do the wrong thing thing well instead of the gal who didn’t do anything of substance. I figured the people would at least get their hair set on fire if we had a corrupt SoS like Ohio or Florida… or at least a “privatize pensions” moron who sees the private sector screwed up so badly with their money that he wants to steal the public’s money.
That’s SOOOO smart!
Old joke time.
Q: What’s a four-letter word that starts with a F, ends with a K and stands for “stealing from your labor wages?”
A: 401K
Ahhh… so true. If you ever hear “defined contributions,” you should know that the con-man sitting in front of you is only trying to take your money, earned or otherwise.
wtf are you talking about?
If you have to ask, it would take forever to explain.
I promise… this is funny.

Nice find Jack.
Former Beav Ben Motter facing burglary and theft charges, no links yet that I can find.
For stealing movies? Does he not know that he can do that from the comfort of his own computer?
Ummm… not to diminish the stupid, but doesn’t burglary require an otherwise trespass condition? As I understand it, burglary means the perp was unlawfully on the premises when s/he committed theft.
Is this just another CPD dumb move?
As I understand it, burglay has nothing to do with trespass. It is not trespassing to be on property, unless that property is posted or you have been told to leave, or…I thnk, are hunting (have a gun)
Its not trespassing just to be on someone’s property, ir it isnt posted (and that means legally posted).
Not quite what I’m asking. If you’re asked to leave a property or “banned” from entering said property for whatever reason, you would be trespassing if you encroached on that space.
Breaking into someone’s house or property without their consent is trespassing. Neato.
Walking into a place of business during business hours does not scream “trespass!” to me. Without trespass, I don’t have even an inkling of the CPD’s thought process on charging burglary.
And look up “burglary” statutes.

OSU wins again at the most noble of endeavors… in a record-setting way.

I used to fly fish Clear Lake as a Cub Scout (lived in Woodland at the time).
Hope they used the Super Bass-O-Matic 76 to prepare them. “That’s terrific bass!”

Saturday Night Live: Bassomatic – Bing Videos
Just thinking about the old Bassomatic sketch makes me sick to my stomach. I’ve always hated that since I first saw it as a kid. Never been a big seafood fan, and even less of a fan of “pureed” seafood. excuse me now while I go vomit….
Come on, blended fish guts is delicious………….mmmmmmmm good.
The college bass fishing thing is funny. I had never heard of it until I went to a Northwestern football game two years ago in Evanston. During one of the TV timeouts they honored their national championship Bass Fishing team. Who would have thunk it? Northwestern?
I would have presumed that Southwest by Southeast Redneck State would have been the powerhouse in that “sport.” Must have been pissed off losing to some smarty-pants Yankees from Chicago.
Wait, are we talking about the floor polish or the dessert topping?
It’s both!
I just vomited again. You gotta stop….please!!!
I’d love to see your reaction to lutefisk.
Jolly good. Do you know if these guys are sponsored? I assume NCAA rules don’t apply – lol. Clear Lake and Willits are beautifiul places. Perhaps they can find some recruits for other sports when they are in the southeast – apparently they are accomplished at finding winners in out-of-the way places.
Clear Lake has more car tires and junk on the bottom than a junk yard. If you ever dive there, you will be shocked. The algae blooms in summer are grotesque. It was the Lake Tahoe of Northern California in the 50’s and early 60’s and many buildings on the north shore have not been fixed or painted since the 50’s. All septic tanks and substantial meth runoff eventually drain into the warm water shallow basin. It has good bass fishing, especially at night when you can see the fish glow.
It was the 70’s when I was there, but it doesn’t surprise me.
I heard the same story from an old-timer while standing on a beach on the Bolivar Peninsula.
“This water used to be crystal clear without all the foam and oily film… blah, blah blah. It used to look like a Caribbean Beach… blah, blah blah.”
Get out of the way old-timer. This is a world where you are shit and so are your memories. That water is necessary for US government subsidized companies to dump their waste unfettered because fettered would be Commie.
Oh hallelujah… and all that stuff. God must love me… because I have money.
Alas, my memories of Clear Lake and Willits precede your present-day description. Even then you could see it coming, though. I hate it when sweet recollections are shattered -or as Jack has put it, my memories are shit – but now I know enough not to go there again.
Sadly, this might also be lost on youth. But this is me far too often when re-visiting places I loved as a kid.

More Beavs in NoCal
http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/local/south_bay&id=9060787#&cmp=twi-kgo-article-9060787
Can they pitch without throwing a passed ball or hitting the batter?
Beaver can be dangerous to your health.
http://m.usatoday.com/article/news/2074145
Damn!
Sorry… Dam!
Maybe this portends an unusually aggressive season from Riley? Here comes that faster paced offense, and its going to be lethal!
Friggin’ Yale!
They kept their forecheck on for a good 30 minutes, and then they score on a one-on-two counter through the five hole.
They’re hot. That’s for sure dontcha know.
Looking like its going to be an all Connecticut championship game right now. I assumed I was the only Beaver fan watching the Frozen Four.
You, me and BeavGoph.
Yale has beaten our teams on the way to the FF, and now Lowell falls too. And Yale has done it with sustained speed (not power) forechecks from the 3rd period on. They’ve been impressive.
Quinipiac essentially got a bye into the FF. Mankato State may have lost to a good Miami team, but there’s no reason SCSU should have been in the same bracket. There’s also no reason UND should have been in the same bracket as Minnie, hot Yale or no hot Yale.
We’re getting what should have been the regional final to get to the FF in this semi.
And as I type Benik scores.
Honestly I usually don’t follow college hockey that closely but I like the watching the game and I always enjoy watching collegiate athletes regardless of the sport. I’ve gotten more into the NHL over the last couple of years. Both Yale and Quinipiac have looked very good in their last few games though and I’m excited to watch this finals match up.
I won’t watch the NHL until they ban fighting. Mandatory suspensions followed by a ban from the game should do. There’s no place in sport for people throwing punches at one another… well… except maybe for the sweet science. But that’s all about throwing punches.
Rodney Dangerfield had it right.
Cal released their new logo and uniforms and most feel OSU got a superior product. The new Cal logo’s jaggedness is a bit surprising. My sense is OSU fans’ favorite helmet is the orange just ahead of the black and the white having the least of fans in love with it. I think the white is better than many and the detractors are those who don’t like the new beaver logo as much as they were hoping. All in all, though, OSU’s uniforms are a solid mix and hopefully the players get their way and can mix up the combos more than BDC seems to be planning.
Better Rebrand: Oregon State or Cal?
http://beaverbyte.com
I don’t really see Cal’s new uniforms as the same rebrand the beavers got. Their uniforms look semi similar to their old ones to me and they are still using the cursive ‘Cal’ on the sides of their helmets. I would compare what Cal got to what ASU got a couple of years ago. The Beavers new rebrand made national headlines whereas I haven’t seen much at all about Cal on the sporting websites. For that reason I would say Oregon State’s was better because we got more publicity.
Regarding our helmets (I love that we have three different designs by the way) I’m with the majority that I like the orange most, followed closely by the black, with the white being my third choice (I don’t hate the white at all I just like the others more).
Georgia and Cal’s rebrands are pretty similar. Except Georgias bulldog looks stoned now with those red eyes.
http://www.nikeblog.com/2013/04/02/uga-rebranding-new-georgia-football-uniforms-hoops-and-tf-too/
By the way, i like osu’s new font much better than the curvy lettering Georgia got from Nike.
I feel like Georgia looks… The same.
Really?
I wish I knew and cared about Cal and their brand identity (re?) launch.
Thanks for informing me.
Is Peko going to be an academic casualty?

Riley, Banker, and Bray after Spring Practice #7:
http://www.kezi.com/web-extra-riley-banker-bray-41113/
Bray says it would have been a tough “deal” to leave and Banker comments on Brays housecleaning habits.
Riley mentions scrambling players on the DL to suit situations. Mentions Wynn as a leader by example (as opposed to vocal as might be surmised), says Isaac may miss all of Spring.
Isaac is a real key for the O, this isn’t the kind of news one likes to hear…hope his elbow heals completely by Fall.
Cav talked in one article about moving Mitchell to center and Isaac to RT. That seems like another odd line combo from him; at least he talks about getting the 5 best guys on the field.
But, if Isaac is the best lineman, wouldn’t he be best at LT with Phillips at RT when you have right-handed QBs?
Or, wouldn’t the middle of the line be formidable with Isaac/Mitchell/Phillips and some legitimate tackles on the outside (height/arm length/foot speed)? It seems like there is some legitimate young tackle talent at OSU now, the taller, longer guys that OSU has lacked at that position for years.

Natty? Glad to hear they are thinking big, but I would settle for Rosey. Unfortunately, I often did.
Explains my braille keyboard.
We’re over here bg.
Jack, what do you think of the Oline configurations and Cav talking about Isaac maybe playing RT?
I think Isaac can play wherever he wants. Andrews and Enger are both better when they have tackles who can play outside them. But Andrews got hit with a lot of penalties last year for whatever reason. The younger Andrews should be a monster. But I think if Isaac goes RT he should go RG. And Weinreich should be in line for LT after backing Philipp for one year. That leaves Bays, Mitchell, Keller and Harlow to fight it out for the C and LG positions.
I’m certainly much happier now with our depth “dilemma” than I was two and three years ago.
In mid-season form BeavGoph! Good chuckle on a Friday, thanks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQOx8xlbL5w&feature=player_embedded
Riley on his scrimmage today. Woods 80yd TD, Vaz to Boom for TD. Delva a blocked pass.
Sounds like the OL is really coming around, thank god.
The OL should be dominating the DL in scrimmages right now, considering 3/4 of last year’s DL starters weren’t there (Crichton injury, Seumalo/Castro graduation) as well as a projected starter in Hautau sitting out with the hand injury. The DL group is pretty thin and inexperienced right now, so I would expect the OL to have little problem handling them.
Here’s an article on Robinson search for an Ast coach. Interesting read, as far from the work the “understaffed” staff has to do and the philosophy of style of play.
http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2013/04/osu_basketball_robinson_begins.html
Well that was a fluff piece if I’ve ever read one.
Understaffed is correct at OSU. We have four coaches, a DOBO and a couple managers. My high school team in Fargo had that and a couple trainers. Go look at the staff of any other school.
That didn’t come out right.
Other schools have about a dozen people working on hoops alone. They also have about four or five AD personnel working exclusively for hoops which aren’t listed as primary support personnel. OSU has six people doing what 20+ do at other schools… 8-10 for the mean.
Wow, Texas A&M spring game has announced attendance of 45K+…

In an unsurprising development SEC and ESPN starting network now…http://college-football.si.com/2013/04/12/sec-network-espn/
College football just seems to get bigger and bigger and worth more money.
And every year it becomes more amd more expensive to be a fan. Season ticket prices increased again this year, even without the Civil War or a 7th home game.
