Folks asked for my take on UCSB. I haven't seen them this year, but I saw them in-person quite a bit last year, and they were mediocre. I don't fear them at all because great pitching will shut down decent hitting. UCSB's pitching is bad (4.01 team ERA), and they don't play well on the road. Beavs should be fine.
Cliff has a writeup you can read here. I'd say it's accurate.

Here's the schedule:

05/31/13 vs. Texas A&M vs. UC Santa Barbara Corvallis, Ore. 12:05 p.m. PT
vs. Texas-San Antonio Corvallis, Ore. 5:00 p.m. PT
06/01/13 TBD Corvallis, Ore. TBA

    • Wow did Bama so look like an undeserving team to get in the tourney this morning. Their pitcher was throwing meatballs until he got yanked way too late.

  1. I posted this on the other thread, but it's just so nice.

    THIS is wild!!!!

Someone with a Twitter account needs to send THIS to Roberto Nelson. Tell him to get on the Barca bandwagon stat.

Neymar is now officially my favorite footballer in the world.

  2. Kansas State can swing the bat but Wichita State's pitching and defense has been abysmal. Making little league mistakes. Still think Arkansas comes out of that regional but Kansas State's offense is impressive.

    • Their pitcher Mengden is having one of those Schultzy types of days today.  Lots of wild pitches, a balk, fell off the mound at one point and UCSB getting several hits.  Already got pulled in the 4th.  5-1 UCSB

  3. Gators lose

    Miss State loses

    Bama loses.

SEC having a bad first day . E(SEC)PN may cancel their CWS coverage.

    • ….that would be Ole Miss, and not Miss. State (they play later tonight)….but same difference, MIss State probably lose too…hahhaha!!!

      • Just caught that. Having been stationed there in the Navy, there is a difference. Hope the Bulldogs lose to make my false reporting become true.

    • When I saw Florida get in with a 30-29 record, I immediately thought of the '08 defending champion Beavs denied at 4 games over .500 with a very tough schedule.  I hate the f-ing SEC with a fury unknown to mankind!

  4. UCSB wins.  They'll make a good opponent when they meet the Beavs, but I'm thinking their pitching will drop off after their ace Pettibone (Pettibonehead's kid?) is done for the weekend.

  5. Sounds like the Beavs are making good contact, just a matter of time till the runs will come.  When they do the mo will swing quickly….IMHO.

  6. J. Rod Ks, inning over, but at least it's tied up.  Should've scored more, hopefully doesn't come back to bite us.

    • Sims was asked to pitch too long in a game which was too big at a venue which was bigger than he was used to.
At that, the Beavs nearly made up for all the cards stacked against Sims. They didn’t force him to make as many pitches as they could have.

  7. I don't like giving up an out when you have 3 left. Really dumb. Especially since they will walk Conforto now. What the hell

    • Excellent theory, that not giving up an out when ya only have three left.  However, with Peterson's skills/record turning sac bunts into singles, he may  be the exception which (generally) proves the rule.

  8. Leave it to Beavers to create their own drama….hand it to UTSA, they played hard and made us pay for our mistakes!

    Go Beavs!!!

  9. Beavers played really poorly and found a way to escape with a win. Very lucky, but I'll take it. Dylan Davis is a beast, ridiculously clutch.

  10. What a relief! Glad I didn't talk bad about UVA for their 1 run win over Army when we were ACC and SEC bashing. Boy, would my face have been red.

  11. Wow. Deserved to lose this one. Feel bad for USTA……sort of. Davis has been money. Hopefully this gets some momentum going.

  12. Man, what is with these Friday letdowns.   Fortunately I tuned out in disgust after 8, so naturally we come back to win.    But we gotta start playing better at the start of a weekend.

    • Sweet!  I downloaded the TuneIn Ap on my iPad and searched for "KKNX".  Radio 84. Now I've got the radio coverage.   I don't have cable tv right now, so the espn ap has been useless to me without a signin.

  13. Why does Casey always pass up bunting in a run that makes it 85-90% we win the game and the Regional for that matter? Instead of one win away we may have just pissed away the Super Regional. Especially with Moore pitching.

  14. Might be Jake Rodriguez's worst game of the season. Having bad at-bats all game and not blocking pitches well behind the plate.

  15. Peterson with a bunt single and Conforto HBP, runners on first and second and 1 out for Dylan Davis in the top of the 9th.

  16. Someone needs to bring a whoopie cushion into Beavs dugout this weekend to break the tension and loosen the guys up a little.

    • Casey was pretty mellow after last nights game, not what I expected.  Wonder how he will assess the performance tonight what with 12 LOB (if Beavs get out of the ninth with the win).

    • He is surely picking up the slack for Schultz and Bryant.  Hard to believe those two won't rebound soon and be the kind of factors most of us expected in the post-season.

        • True, hard to imagine his slump will continue.  Presents a problem for Yeske, won't know if Schultz has recovered without putting him in a game.

Wonder, didn't Dallas Buck head for the fire lines about the time the BP began to have troubles?

  17. Another great finish! Great and disciplined at bats in the late innings for the Beavs. One more victory and it's on to the Super Regionals!

    • The guy I would like to see become the next OSU baseball coach is Linfield's Scott Brosius.  I don't care if pure-orange.net thinks he's an asshole or not.  The guy can win!!  Whoever it is though needs to be a good coach and can continue the success.

  18. Baseball is a fickle game, hard line drives become outs, little dribblers become key hits….I'll take a couple of one run wins in a playoff situation anytime.

      • Two hits for the ucks tonight; they've often combined that kind of performance with enough HBP's, BB's, WP's, and errors by the other side to come up with a victory.  GB said their luck would run out, now they'll have to use pitchers #3 and 4 tomorrow if they are to get to a Monday game for the Super.  Could happen.

        • ESPN got something right on their tournament selection show, when the hosts questioned the Ducks national seed more than once due to their lack of hitting.  Also, I'm too lazy to find the link (on Oregon Live somewhere), but interesting article about the lack of attendance at PK Park for the regionals with the writer specualting it's due to Oregon's boring brand of baseball under Horton.  Basic premise, one base at a time may be great for the purists, but it ain't gonna fly with Duck fan base who need instant gratification a la Football and to some extent Basketball.

  19. I was at the game and I have to say that Tyler Smiths play he made was one of the great plays I've seen. He needs to start hitting but his defense is top notch.

  20. Nice job by the Beavs to escape with a win once again. I'll take 2 wins despite not playing well. However, Smith, Conforto and Rodriguez have got to start hitting. Just 2 of 23 in the regional combined, Jake is 1 for his last 18 overall. If the Beavers get those three going, they'll be extremely tough to beat.

  21. Illini get screwed out of the tying run, getting it taken off the board on a very questionable call. Then proceed to have an epic meltdown in the last two innings. They should have beaten Vandy. Coach makes some really dumb decisions and players make some really boneheaded plays. Vandy can really swing the bats. Impressive line up that will make you pay for mistakes.

  22. The NCAA committee made a mistake not putting Arizona in this thing….Ol Miss, Alabama, Florida, and Clemson look like shit!!!!….what about that team that got in with the losing record….anybody know how they are doing?

    • Texas A&M had a losing conference record if that's who you're referring to and they're up 4-0 over UC Santa Barbara in the 4th. Committee didn't really make a mistake, just the bubble teams this year are extremely weak and Stanford and Arizona didn't beat anybody, unfortunately.

    • If you mean Bowling Green, they of course lost their two games and have gone home.  They won the MAC tournament, so that's how they got it.  Kent St. who sent the Quacks home last year lost to BG in the championship game, but were the better team overall.  That's the problem with a winner take all conference championship game, in one game anything can happen.

    • It's the same logo they used from about 1970 to 2000. I've pointed this out on more than one occasion. It's one reason (besides it being ugly) that I never liked the OS logo. It's just not original.

  23. Infield single by Davis and a 1 out single by Barnes has runners on the corners with 1 out. Those two are absolutely raking right now.

  24. Kayes didnt swing at any of those 3 strikes. With 2 on it seems like youve gotta try to get a run in rather than look for that walk. they better not strand runners all day again like they did yesterday. bases loaded now for Gordon with 2 down.

  25. Piss poor management when the Regional can be safely won today. Stranding runners is getting old. You bunt and they may even mess up under the pressure. Regardless it is a sure run and then you try for more after that.

    • Casey was playing for the big inning and Keyes had been swinging it well of late. I think he made the right decision, just didn't work out how he liked.

    • They're 55th in defense. Not sure about 2 out hitting, but hitting overall they're 68th and seem to lack 2 out hits/clutch hits all year. Very confusing comment.

      • I should probably clairfy, those were the keys to winning baseball games from my high school coach. Timely hitting is the tricky one of the three because it's pretty arbitrary, my take on it is getting hits when you absolutely need it.  And so far this regional we have a done a good job, but that first inning Wetzler was getting hit hard, Conforto misplayed a ball, and of course leaving men on base.

  26. North Carolina lost FAU and play in a winner take all game tomorrow. Vanderbilt trailing 2-0 to Georgia Tech. A lot of national seeds not having a good day.

  27. Beavers catch a major break as shortstop commits an error on a routine ground ball to short. Smith scores and it's tied at 1. Runners on the corners

  28. Hey, the little white dot rolled into the dugout on my excellent Gametracker, am I correct in assuming the Beavs just scored on an Aggie error?

  29. Conforto makes a baserunning mistake then misplays another ball in left for a double. Having a rough night and rough regional.

  30. Danny Hayes comes through with the huge hit the Beavers have desperately neded. Two out two run double makes it 3-1 Beavers

  31. Another thing on Peterson, he is a smart and fast baserunner!  Scores on Hayes 2 RBI double.  Beavs up now, 3-1

  32. Wetzler throws a lot of pitches to finally strike out the side in the b7,  if recent history holds he'll not see more than two batters in the 8th.  Will Yeske call on Max?

I'm thinkin' he'll try Bryant, cross fingers.

    • Never happen, but how creative would it be to put Hendrix in to run for JRod.  Espo has shown good D, but bringing him in cold is not at all likely.

  33. How 'bout that, Wetzler a pretty easy 1-2-3 inning.  On to the ninth, still Beavs up 3-1
Peterson to lead off the Beavs t9.

  34. Seems not so long ago we watched Hayes go through a slump, now he comes around with 3 RBI's today and great performances lately.

His RBI single here makes it 4-1 Beavs with runners on 2 and 3, one out for Barnes.

  35. Davis HBP, then a passed ball and Hayes follows up with an RBI and moves up to 2nd. Runners on second and third and 1 out for Ryan Barnes. 4-1 Beavers

  36. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2013/06/03/pac-12-limiting-contact-football/2384731/

Pac 12 to set new rules in July which will limit the amount of full contact practices the teams can conduct each week.  Wonder how this will help/hurt recruiting if it's not a policy adopted by every conference?  You have to think some players would like the limited contact and the toll it takes on their bodies over the course of a career, but teams will have a hard time adjusting to full speed in game situations if they don't practice the game the way it's played.

I'm all for protecting the players, but at what point does it turn into flag football?

    • It's flag football when the only game is on Thanksgiving, and the players are all 50 lbs. overweight and full of Bud Light.

  37. Rice takes a 3-0 lead after their half of the 1st and then give two back as the ducks plate two on a dropped pop fly, a walk, a single and a blown DP ball.

        • 8-3 Rice with two outs and runners at 1 and 2, t5.

Listening to these uck announcers should make even the most ardent Mike Parker critic think twice!

  38. FAU has two dingers in the t9 when they were down 6-2 entering the 9th and leave their half with an 8-6 lead.  FAU closer gives up a leadoff double and single to put the winning run at the plate for UNC with nobody out.

  39. heels get an RBI walk and the winning run at 1b,, sacks juiced and nobody out.  Another RBI walk and the winning run at 2b with nobody out

  40. Sherfy gives up a 2 RBI triple with two outs in the t9, then follows with an RBI double making it 11-4 Rice.  Announcers are "shocked" to see Sherfy being hit like this.

  41. After a DP in the b9 the ucks announcers are still refering to the situation as a mini-rally!

Payne grounds out to end it, Rice wins 11-4 on 15 hits.

  42. I have not checked in here for a while since I thought it was getting boring, but the last few posts are good quality so I guess I’ll add you back to my daily bloglist. You deserve it my friend gddddeagcgdacegc
