Slow week, so let’s get the discussion going. All games on ESPNU. They might show up on ESPN3, too. I haven’t watched any Kansas State, but their offensive numbers are good:
- 2nd in batting average
- 9th in OBP
- 26th in stolen bases
- 29th in runs
Not much power, though, so it appears they manufacture runs. Their pitching is ranked 86th (3.86 ERA). On paper, these teams look similar sans the Beav’s clear pitching edge. If any of you guys have a scouting report on K-State chime in and let us know.

@Stephen__Nelson: Ex-#GoBeavs MT @RapSheet #Bears TE Gabe Miller suspended w/o pay for 1st 4 gms for violating NFL policy on performance enhancing substances
Anyone care?
He's still in the NFL? Didn't he get drafted as a LB?
I think KC(?) drafted him as a LB, and he's later moved to TE.
Not sure the PED's are paying off for him. He clearly didn't use them at OSU…..
OSU pitching will be key.OSU ranks second in opponents BA at .209 versus the #2 hitting team and #9 in on base percentage.
Getting the first out will be huge. Can't let Kstate rally.
I'll take good pitching over a good offense anyday.
Looking at K State's schedule, I'm trying to figure out which series(s) they won this year that would lead you to think they're a top team?
They beat #19 Oklahoma 2-1 in a home series, but other than that, I don't see anything that stands out. Also, their schedule had them playing at home for almost the entire month of March. Seems like a crazy long home stand, and their home record is much better than their away record.
I know OS hasn't been exactly lighting it up offensively lately, but I just don't see K State taking this series based on their history and being away from home.

Hopefully Conforto's double in the 9th on Sunday will get him going. Would be nice to see him getting back to driving the ball, he just seems like he's been pressing, if that double gets him going, the OSU offense will look a lot better. When he gets hot, the whole team feeds off it and gets going with the bats.
I haven't looked but I have to believe the Beavs kick their ass in LOB numbers
Matchup: No. 1 Kansas State vs. No. 1 Oregon State
The Big 12 is well represented with Kansas State joining Oklahoma in the super regionals, and give credit to the Wildcats: They made history, just like Indiana, by reaching the program's first super regional. They did it by averaging 10 runs per game — Florida State is the only other team to do that in the first round — and overcoming Arkansas, an SEC staple who some (here, here) pegged as one of the No. 2 seeds with the best shot to win its regional. That was solely because of Arkansas' pitching.
But Kansas State took care of its business at home and now goes to Corvallis to face Oregon State. We mentioned last week that the Beavers somehow slide into anonymity in the Northwest, despite being one of the country's premier programs. They operate in a drama-free and routine realm that maybe only the San Antonio Spurs can appreciate.
It's not that Corvallis crawls with tension-less games — the Beavers outscored their regional opponents by only seven runs in three games — but there's a certain assurance, it seems, around Pat Casey's club, a claim he'd probably mock and say there's nothing sure about winning postseason games. He'd know, but here are some things we know: Oregon State has won 14 consecutive NCAA tournament games in Corvallis; it has reached the super regionals five times, and three of the last four teams have gone to Omaha; two of those teams, of course, won it all.
If the Wildcats swing the bats anything like they did in the regional, they have a chance to continue their run and get to Omaha. But as North Carolina and Vanderbilt and others survive elimination games, it seems like the Beavers simply take the next steady step on their journey.

All I've heard about K-State is nothing that hasn't been reported here. I do give the edge to the Beavs though because pitching and defense have won games all year long. I also believe that Goss and home crowd factor will play a key part, plus Casey has been to the "promised land" and won the whole thing twice. Listening to his pre-game show the other night, when he was talking about talent and athletes is something I haven't heard from any OSU coaches past and present before. K-State has a good offense, but they are a so-so road team and OSU has proven before that they can shut down powerhouse offenses through the years. OSU in two close games.
Is there a Goss factor? Compared to all the other locations this weekend, seemed library quiet to me.
Not as quiet as PK Park. Thought I heard crickets chirping.
Listening to Wilson during one of the broadcasts last week, it sounded like some of the hitting problems were due to the time of day and where the sun sat in the sky. There was a shadow cast between the pitchers mound and home plate which made seeing the ball and its spin more difficult than usual for the players. Unfortunately, with 2 4:00 games this weekend, we may see more of the same. we’ll se if that theory holds up on Sunday when they start at 7:00 and the lights come on.
Listening to the Rice announcers in Monday night's Oregon game – there was the same problem in Eugene. And, since it changes during the game, it isn't an equal disadvantage. It didn't make any different in that outing, but in a tight game?
OT..a little.
The concept of a Sports Psychologist has been discussed here before, in a piece by Eggers he mentions that Yeskie has used them in the past. We knew Beaver Baseball had used psych's, I always assumed Casey was the initiator (and maybe he was). At any rate, if Riley has used one I'm of the opinion that he hasn't done enough or gotten the right guy. Anyone here have further info??
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/153917-yeskie-a-big-hit-as-oregon-state-pitching-coach
I don't think Riley does and I know Robinson (who should) and Rueck don't as well. Tanya Chaplin does for the gymnastics team, but I don't think it is Brian Cain. He's the guy that Casey has used and I see he's going to be a camp councillor for the summer camps that Pat has this year.
Thanks.
Rueck may be able to fill the "mental coach" role himself, especially with the number of players involved. No comment on Robinson except to agree with you that he should.
As for Riley, last year he seemed to rely on guys on the team to step up as motivators, etc. Thinking of Poyer, Wheaton, and Isaac; coaches also may fill the role to an extent. Having a specialist seems to offer more promise, maybe this is simply more of Riley's habit of letting the team find its own personality. My understanding is that a sports psych does more than motivate or teach fundamentals, his/her work in the area of visualization, dealing with success and failure, etc aren't likely to be duplicated by position coaches or team leaders.
Go Beavs!
It's always good when you have a good "motivator" on the team. Best example I can think of is the transition from Andy Jenkins and Jacoby Ellsbury to Mitch Canham and Darwin Barney on those CWS teams. If you have a Markus Wheaton or Brandin Cooks that can pump others up and help the others along, maybe you don't need one, but not all teams do and even those guys can't get each other on the same page. That's what makes this year's baseball team special is that everyone is on the same page psychologically. No "me" players. Mitch Canham was a team guy, Kevin Rhoderick was not. Talent gets you there, but I think what seperates championship teams from "also-rans" is the amount of preparation, appreciation of the game and your coaches and teammates. This team has a chance to do it all just like 2006-07 did.
….I expect a series similar to the WSU battle — a good hitting ball club. I think there will be a blowout in one of the games (not sure who) with lots of runs ~10-6….and I think we come back to win against their bullpen in one of the games. It all may come down to where the line drives fall — if we don't get them to fall the way they weren't falling in the regionals, then it's going to be a long weekend….if Beavs can turn 'em into hits….well then, we may very well blow them out…..(and blowout I mean, win by 4+ runs).

The Wichita Eagle's Tony Adame said in the O-live chat today that,
"K-State will run like crazy – they're always pushing it on the basepaths. 98 steals in 148 attempts…"
I'm a JRod fan, so I guess I have to say, "bring it on", my money is on Jake!
2 out of 3 steals doesn't seem very good….I expect that to drop even further with Jake gunning them down….
Yeah, it is hard to evaluate the successful steal percentage without some idea of the caliber of pitchers/catchers faced. I believe the ucks were around 70%, for comparison the beavs are 50 of 72 while opponents are 22 of 48.
In any event, KState seems to be a running team and I am hoping they try to run on JRod.
OT: (OSU Football Captains)
Anyone else see today that the team voted on its captains?
Rashaad Reynolds, Brandin Cooks, Grant Enger, Michael Doctor and Sean Mannion.
Now obviously the team doesn't decide who starts at QB, but I didn't see the team vote Vaz for captain either.
Anyway, back to Baseball this weekend – Go Beavs!
It would have been a BIG story if Sean wasn't selected since he was a captain last year. As it is I'm not sure this news tells us much about the QB situation. No real surprises in the list, although I would not have been surprised to see Isaac's name there as well.
Sean will start.
Agree
Hunt looks past the draft to next years team a little.

Likely good news for the Beavs and our future at SS:
http://heraldnet.com/article/20130605/SPORTS/706059928/0/BLOG06
Casey said a couple years ago that he was tired of kids who went MLB even though he had recruited them and expected them to be in Corvallis. I think the turning point was Davis and Conforto. Those two told the scouts there was no way they would sign no matter what money was thrown their way. And the scouts abided. They were not drafted despite their second to fourth round projections before the draft.
I think there's a major pitch to these kids that they can get an education and still progress with their baseball dreams by competing on a "next" level and participating in summer leagues. And it's hard to argue against that pitch unless you're one of the very very few who can run through a MLB system and make it to the bigs in short order. Three years of BMOC and fun and development from someone who can develop your game is a strong pitch.
Still, we're going to end up with kids who just take the money. They think they're the stars of the future in the old system way. And some of them really are. But Casey still has to sign a couple of them every year. You just never know what's going to happen. And contingencies are always in place.
I fully expect O'Neill to be the signee who goes MLB. I'd love for him to actually commit to Corvallis, but I'm real in my expectations. Money talks more often than not.
Still, I'm happy with the large segment of signees promising to come to OSU despite MLB draft projections. Casey has a method, and he's working it well.
I've been in Newberg for a couple days visiting my brother and friends. I'm sad and angry for losing another friend. OSU lost another great person. Please don't introduce half-wit teabagger memes to this site. I'm looking for a fight… as pathetic as it might seem. And I'm an equal opportunity basher. If you're going to post something silly from the non-anarchy side of the spectrum, I'll hate on you for a couple days also.
It's another beautiful day in the valley. Life goes on… and KSU will get retribution for the March Madness cover. Old hate dies hard.
Bank it.
Oooh! I'll pick on the minus marks as well. If you hate the commons, minus this comment. If you hate that our country cares for its own people, by all means thumbs me down. You suck as a citizen of this country, let alone the world. You are a selfish sycophant who knows nothing about macro processes.
And you probably hate the way your neighbor mows his lawn… but you don't know why.
Minus me down baby! I'm for free.
Was that illogic?
Who and what the F are you talking about Jack??
The who is an old friend in Newberg who died yesterday. She was an awesome person, and i'm still grasping her loss. She would be the first to tell you that the good of her community was for her own good.
I'm just looking to pick a fight with someone. And idiots are the easiest to entice. I just want to extend someone's legacy for a short burst whilst I think about her and her mark on this world. And she would want me to fight for right moreso than I have. She's told me so.
Maybe I need to do so… as much a pain it might be for people to read the truth.
I'm involved on other sites as well, and I've been inundated with REALLY REALLY stupid arguments for the past couple weeks. There are many who hyper-thinks Lincoln as a racist. That's a nice one… considering their links are all from racist fucks who claim to be (and are not) economists… not historians. And even if they claimed to be historians, they would be laughed out of the room for the fucking cherry-picking snippets they think are even remotely relevant.
I'm just not in the mood for bullshit no matter how stupid it is.
sorry for your loss
On topic: Hip Hip Hooray socks:
http://www.osubeaversshop.com/gdosu36111310.html
The socks are pretty awesome. Own it! Love it!
These are attributes heretofore unknown to OSU athletics on an institutional/marketing level, if not within the fanbase… because of marketing IMO. Own it and annoy your opponents with it. that which is seen as a weakness can be made a strength if you just own the damn thing.
I've been told previously that I know nothing about "weakness" or "shame" when it comes to being stronger. mike Parker and his napkin comes to mind. I hold true to this thought. If he can't laugh at that incident and be a man in the face of it, then NOTHING we do or say has any effect positive or negative. Riley has his HHH after games, and we're Mayberry because of it. You know what? People in the majority love Mayberry. Fuck you if you don't understand. I got some socks that you can also wear to the goth club if you're so inclined.
Be who you are. Own who you are. Make apologies only to those who deserve apologies. Live your life. Don't give me some fully bullshit (and I mean completely) argument about, "Oh… he's cool… I like him… don't laugh at him… I want to make his healing process incomplete by being a fucking crutch… because manipulation never wonts for friendly support.
If it's good, it's good. If it's bad, it's bad.
Own it!

There’s a shirt too, so people can actually read the message rather than having it obscured by your pants leg.
Pants leg? Bro, I'm wearing those bad boys with my cargo shorts. loud and proud…Hip Hip Hooray.
… and sandals!
I can't wait until my kids are teens. I'm going to fashion faux paux the hell out of them.
I was slightly disturbed this morning while taking my son to school. I looked at him, and he was wearing his Skylanders backpack (black and orange) and black jeans and an orange shirt. I commented to him that he was wearing awesome colors. He turned around and said, "You didn't fool me. See this here [logo on his shirt]? It has red and white. So I'm wearing red and white, not Beaver colors."
Oh key doh key.
I guess I have some work to do here in Cluck land. I don't know if he's picking this crap up from school or from the in-laws. i think it's both, but the pejorative aspect has to be coming from school.
I think I'll end that aspect quickly… for my orange and black (and 1% red and white) clad son (shoes and socks are also black).
I did tell him that he had the color pallette of a dumb Cluck.
Was that wrong?
Just saying I rarely find myself wearing shorts to a football game in Corvallis unless it's September. I agree the socks are more novel and eye catching, as long as the eye can catch them.
With sandals babeee!
i like the socks. I think it's better as a whole process. I say HHH, and you say, "What?"
I say HHH, and you wonder what the hell I'm talking about. I pull up my pant leg and show you HHH in all its glory.
I just occupied a minute of your time and made you think about HHH.
A t-shirt gets a glance.
I also like that they're black. I would love for them to make them boot sock quality as well.
Does that mean they are longer?
So I bit the bullet.
The Dish installer is here. Bye bye Directv. I've known you for 12 years. It was decent. But you don't have the Pac12 Channel, and the dvr "upgrade" you sent two years ago has a greater capacity that the old TiVo dvr we had before. But it really does not respond like that old R16 receiver. And you don't have the Pac12 Network.
Did I say that already?
If you're moving to Dish, do it smartly. I found a coupon code at retailmenot.com for a $50 referral. My start-up cost is $50 plus the two months of DTV I still owe on my contract ($20 per month). I timed this to start between series we watch, and that increased capacity is down to zero now. I'm also going to sell all my DTV dvr's on EBay to recoup losses.
Good bye DTV. I knew thee well.
by start-up cost, are you saying it's $50 monthly? or is that the install price? What is your monthly Dish bill?(not including DTV runout or ebay dvr sales)
I've been off cable for a few months now and haven't really missed it. All of my shows stream PPV off Amazon prime and you can get free 30 netflix trials as frequently as you can make up a new fake email address. I know I'll be needing my football fix in a few months though, so I'm torn between Dish or picking Comcast back up for those months.
I go OTA when not in Football season and Amazon and Netflix. I will up again for football season then drop it after the Beavers National championship game. Dish told me to go month to month would be near $600 to $700 startup cost, as they would make me buy the DVR. Comcast, who I don't really like has a $50 set up fee and if you are new or haven't had service in past 6 months can get Pac12 for $30 per month. I would love to pick up Dish, but not for a 2 year commitment. I stll have one kid in college.
I completely missed the NC comment. That's awesome. Although, I think this team is set up for a better run in 2014. But I do like the anti-Moriarty vibes.
*waves
Did you verify that dish is going to carry the new fox sport channel? I did a quick google search and didnt find an answer either way. Would suck to switch and still have the same problem for football games
Jack just choked on his whole wheat locally sourced cheese sammich.
I don't buy bread. What the hell are you talking about?
:)
Since Fox Sports 1 is taking over SPEED, I'm assuming they will also take over their carriage contract. I think Fox is horrible, but I don't imagine they're so monumentally stupid that they would just throw away good contracts and get in a pissing match with providers.
The $50 is just a referral credit you can find on that or other sites. To get the best package which includes the Pac12N you have to go to the 250+ Package. We have a need for many of the channels included beyond their 120 Package, so we buy in. 250+ is everything but the premium movie channels (HBO, SHO, MAX, Starz).
Total cost for 250+ and fees (and three TV's) adds up to $108 per month. Minut $7 for each TV. I also get the Hopper and free HD for life so long as I am paperless and do online billpay.
Now I have to call DTV and tell them they can suck eggs.
Well, I loved them for what they were. And they always deeply discounted my bill when I called every 3 months. But I want the P12N, and I don't want to call them to tell them I've been a loyal customer and deserve a quarterly discount.
Too steep for me considering I'll literally only watch the Pac 12 network, and a few ESPN games during the football season. The rest of those channels are worthless to me. Guess I'll have to continue to log into my computer using my parents cable account info to get Pac-12 online. The quality sucks, but it's free!
….but thanks for the info :)
You can get their bare bones package for some ridiculous price like $20 per month. Then you can just add the sports pack for another $11. DVR looks like it's another $12. If you go to their site, you can just play with the service packages to see what they may cost. You don't need to commit.
Per Dish, no commitment is I believe $800 ( have to buy DVR ) up front and $67 per month for P 12 and no commitment.
Ouch!
I'm working all the angles I can to lower my bill with the commitment. I got the 250+ package for 3 rooms, and I will retain HBO and Showtime once the free 3 months are up. I have zero use for Skinemax and Starz. I'll work with Blockbuster during the same free 3 months to see if it's worth the extra $10 or if I'll just keep Netflix. Seeing as Netflix currently costs more, the bar is pretty low to just keep Blockbuster. And there's a $7 charge for a protection plan which will kick in once the four months free also ends. We usually keep this because I'm just amazed at what kids can do when you give them four seconds to themselves.
The bill for the first three months will be $101. Month four is $127 since I'm retaining two premium channels. And month five and beyond will be $134. We could have cut the bill by $30 per month for the first 12 months, but my wife wants the Ipad that comes with the deal. So we're full boat. With the referral code, the first month was dropped to $51. And I've sent referral codes to my own email as well as received a couple other referral codes upon installation. So to work the bill further, I'm using those for max effect. Their deal is $50 per referral up to 10 referrals in a calendar year once each referral lasts beyond the second billing period. And they give you $5 off your bill for 10 months. And I get six PPV coupons for up to $6.99 each with the first referral (have to be used within 90 days apparently).
Now I'm not a salesman, so I'm not hitting up friends and family and coworkers to move over to Dish. But I thought about it for a split second and just remembered where I got the referral code I used. So I went to that site and created a user profile. And I just started plugging my referral codes in along with the others. Apparently the aggregate pool of people looking for these codes (like I did) is so large that they just hammer these codes.
So I expect my second bill to be $101. But my third bill will again be $51. The fourth will be $77, and all bills except months 23 and 24 will be $84. Since I'm cutting off DTV with months 23 and 24 still on the books, I'm paying $40 to them. Dish will cost $60 if I do the same to them in two years.
If I was single with one TV, I would go as low as I could for the base package which still allowed me to pick up their $11 multi sports pack (which has the Pac 12 Network… which is really why I'm doing all this anyway). And i would use my existing mobile platforms to synch with the Hopper for Dish Anywhere (I played with that feature this morning, and it wanted to enable every laptop and smart phone within 100 feet… it was sorta nuts) instead of going full boat for the Ipad. That would put the cost at $35+$12(DVR)+$11(sports)= $58 per month for the first 12 months and $78 for months 13-24. You can add and drop the sports pack at will, cutting $11 off (I believe it's also prorated if cut off or added in the middle of the month, but don't quote me on that.
If I were to do that, I get the same promos. Month one is $8 because of the referral code. Month two is $58. Months 3-12 are back down to $8, and 10 of the last 12 months are $28… going to $78 for the last two months or dropping them altogether for $60 and playing this game again if i don't just keep them and work the referral system to death. Subtract $11 from whichever months you don't want the sports pack.
That's how I worked the deal from the start for the higher base package. And that's what I would do for one TV on the lowest possible base package. And I'm now wondering if I can upgrade my second and third rooms to a Google TV and drop the extra $7 per room with the Dish Anywhere feature. I guess if i was single and wanted a TV in the bedroom, garage, backyard, wherever I would do this. But that's a cost to look at down the road.
ahhh yes…thanks…this really simplifies things…. lol
Essentially, you can get an HD DVR for one TV, the Pac 12 Network and a mobile platform anywhere you can get wifi for $24.25 per month if you put in about half an hour of online effort over two years. Subtract $11 for any month(s) you don't need or want the PTN.
In fact, if you time it for football (Sept) you can probably talk Dish into the sports pack as a promo free for three months. Watch to see what Directv offers and use that as leverage against Dish. I think last year DTV offered free NFL channels for new subscribers. So I've seen some forums where people who signed on for dish got three free months of sports pack and ESPN Gameplan instead of the premium movie promos or whatever.
If one works it right the first year of bills would be $0, $44, $0, $5 then $3 credits for the other 8 months assuming you drop the PTN, $8 otherwise.
For the record, I wish I was this motivated when I had DTV. I could have made a killing on the same referral code trick over the last 12 or so years if I had thought about it and researched like I did when I was looking for a new deal.
Credit the Pac 12 Network and DTV's insistence not to carry them for my discovering this. But if any of you out there are still on DTV, you can plug in these referral codes to the tune of $10 per month off your bill (again, 10 referrals in a calendar year).
My wife laughs at me when I do this kind of research on purchases of all kinds. She thinks it's a waste of time. But (and this may surprise many of you *sarcasm*) I don't like paying full price for anything. And I don't like buying things like T-shirts (for example) three times in one year when I can spend a little extra and buy US sourced T's which last forever, actually fit and cost so so much less in the long run.
It's so easy to live a Cadillac life in a Wal Mart world if you just take a little time to research everything. For me that has a lot to do with Professor Vars and his common sense approach to buying "things." If any of you ever had him for an econ course, you know the lesson about buying bread versus making it at home.
Now that we have this interweb thingy at our fingertips, there's no reason we can't be lazy AND smart instead of just lazy Wal Martians.
I'm hoping our Ukranian friends have their same offer up this year. Angry's tips on how to block pop-ups made my computer screen semi-watchable, but I am getting damn tired of squinting.
Jack talks a lot but says very little.
I've not said anything. I've only written words.
Do you speak the words you type?
You know how we know your life sucks? When you have a rough day you get online and try to pick fights with anonymous posters on an Oregon State athletics website.
Hey, its a good, theraputic use of a Blog. Doesnt hurt anyone, and makes you feel better. How does Jack raving a bit, bother you?
I wouldn't say it bothers me, but I'd say his constant "raving" about completely random and intentionally antagonizing topics is likely a big reason why there isn't a lot of casual, free-flowing conversation on this blog like there is on many of the other sports blogs I frequent. It's really not something I stress or care enough about to actually let bother me though. Just a casual observation/opinion.
That was a casual observation… and completely convincing.
Let's be clear. Your quasi-complaint is that I talk about something other than sports, and that's why conversations about something other than sports don't happen on a sports blog. Or that it's not about, "Hey Joe, how's that coffee?" Instead it's more of a "Hey Joe, why the hell do you drink that Folgers crap when there are infinite better coffees in this world?"
I think that's what you wrote above.
I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees. Sue me.
If I can get Folger's for $2.99 a pound on special coupon day, I'm in.
I spell the words out loud at times when I type, does that count?
I'm not sure on the rules, but I think you have to actually speak the words as you type them to qualify here.
Maybe mouthing them counts?

Three conf. championships this year. Not to shabby.
I'm guessing that a lot of people here have read Moneyball. I had a long flight so I finally got a chance to read it even though I started to several years ago. It's a good read and anybody with an interest in baseball ought to read it if they haven't. The one point in the book that pertains to this weekend is that there's alot of luck involved in baseball so that even if you have a better team, when you play a do or die series anything can happen and the better team doesn't always win. That and there's no such thing as a manufactured run, outs are too valuable to give away just to move a runner. I think it's harder to apply the principles in the book to the college game when the talent level is so spread out and you really might not know what you have. But one of the points in the book is how underated walks are, not only do you get a man on base and preserve an out but you wear out the starter and none of the relievers are as good as the starter or they would be the starter.
Billy Beane also thought it was rediculous to draft high school players, let them go to college so you could figure out if the talent was real or not.
Thanks, steve. I've never read the book but am putting in on my list now.
The point about the value of walks is something I've been more aware of lately. Some time ago Yeskie mentioned the effect of "stress" pitches as relates to pitch count. I think that is the term he used, anyway; pitching deep in the count, pitching with runners on base and in other stressful situations wears a pitcher down more than simple pitch count.
Who on this Beavs team is most likely to work a walk? I'm thinking Hayes, JRod and, of course, Conforto. A little surprised Keyes isn't as likely to draw BB's.
Not so sure I agree with the statement that if relievers were as good as the starters they'd be starters. I think you can argue that different skills/traits are involved.
I've always been a big fan of guys taking walks. Stress on pitchers comes into play when they have to keep throwing over to first over and over and some pitchers go with the slide step cause they're worried about the baserunner which then may bother the pitcher when delivering to home plate. Any kind of distraction you can give is extremely beneficial. Also, most pitchers aren't as comfortable pitching out of the stretch and there is more importance on each pitch. So, working those walks and getting guys on base is much more physically and mentally exhausting for a pitcher when he has to keep working out of jams.
A good example of differences between stress pitches and not go look at the regional. Boyd threw 114 pitches in 6 2/3 and struggled to get through the last few innings, while Wetzler threw 121 pitches in a CG and was cruising the last couple innings. Boyd had a lot of baserunners, had the bases loaded a couple times in the 6th and it was a very tight game and each pitch had so much importance out there and he was exhausted, while Wetzler was strong throughout, only had multiple runners reach base in an inning in 2 of his 9 innings, didn't have to deal with having to pay attention to a ton of baserunners much and could relax and just make his pitches. Big difference.
In case any of you Corvallis guys missed it yesterday, BeaverBaseball tweets, "Beaver fans, team workouts at Goss Stadium are open to the public tomorrow. K-State goes from 1-2:30 p.m. while OSU is 2:45-4:15 p.m."
Since we have to wait another day for the super regional to start, I thought I'd share this. It's the Golden Nugget casino's way early point spread for every250 college football games coming up this year. I've pulled out the Oregon State scores below. Also, they have Oregon going undefeated.
Oregon State at Utah (-6)
Oregon State (-6.5) at San Diego State
Colorado at Oregon State (-22)
Oregon State (-13) at Washington State
Oregon State (-13) at California
Stanford (-3) at Oregon State
USC at Oregon State (-2)
Oregon State at Arizona State (-4.5)
Washington at Oregon State (-5)
Oregon State at Oregon (-16)
Nothing too surprising except maybe ASU. They're not favored in many of their games and OSU usually plays them well.
I would take the Beavs +6 @ Utah
Agree.
I don't get that line.
I would also take OSU +4.5 @ ASU.
OT: Healy drafted at pick 100 to the A's
Is he a senior? Think he signs if he's not?
Hes a junior. From articles ive read recently, it sounds like he’s leaning toward going pro. He’d be passing up a nice paycheck at this point with the selection he got today. I think he’s gone. Sherfy too
Yeah, Healy is gone and Wetzler got drafted in the 5th round, 151th overall. I don't see him returning for his senior year either.
If Fry can come back at full strength next year, he plugs into that LHP void from Wetzler leaving pretty nicely. Starting pitching should still be pretty damn good next year.
The Friday and Saturday starters will be tremendous again next year, just gotta find the Sunday starter. I'm hoping Child comes back next season and works on his mechanics and takes over on Sundays. If so, the weekend rotation next year will be great once again.
Depends on 2 things but I think he'll turn pro too.
1. How far do the Beavs go? Boyd came back to win it all.
2. How much money will he be offered? Srs have little leverage when drafted. Appel came back and went #1 overall.
Also, signee Tyler O'Neill went #85 to the Mariners. Doubt we'll see this guy in a Beaver uniform.
Boyd goes in the 6th. 175th overall to Toronto
Does John Hunt scan this site for story ideas? I made the pithy comment about "Rolando Blackman revenge" regarding the K-state series in here and now.guess what one of the front page stories on the Oregonian sports page is about today?
I'm want my $1.75 from Hunt or I'm going to sue. Although it's arguable whether anything I say in here could be classified as intellectual property.
Go Beavs!
I think he does. Considering the reply beavergopher got the other day when he critizied Hunt's fact checking. http://angrybeavs.com/baseball/9306#comment-86283
So is this game on TV or just ESPN3?
All the super regional games vs K-State are on ESPNU
Indiana State being added to Beavs 2016 football schedule after cencellation of a previously scheduled game with Minnesota.
http://tribstar.com/sports/x697474378/Exit-Minnesota-enter-Oregon-State-on-2016-football-schedule
This confused me for a second because of our home and home with Minnesota but I see that is in 2017-2018.
So, yaaaaa, Indiana State! I'm def marking this thrilling matchup on my calender.
It's one of those years where the Beavs will be allowed to play an extra non-conference game because of an away game at Hawaii.
Beavs should easily be 4-0 going into league play that year.
8/30 Portland State
9/6 @ Hawaii
9/13 Indiana State
9/20 San Diego State
My bad, I was looking at 2014. Can't find 2016's non-con schedule
Tyler Smith drafted by Mariners in 8th at 237th overall
Good for him. He can probably start for them later this summer.
Looking at it, I'm hating the M's right now despite them picking Smith in the 8th. They also picked O'Neill and Bohn before that. Suck it M's!!!!!
Oh… they already are.
OT… how about this Yasiel Puig kid? Does anyone else think Clemente with monster power when watching this guy play? Holy crap!
Bohn was drafted by the Marlins.
So I get to be an equal opportunity M's hater.
Mississippi was handed their punishment today for a booster paying a recruit. Sanctions were pretty light. What's interesting is Mississippi State was in front of the NCAA's committe of infractions on the same day Oregon was.
Seems like the timing is about right for Oregon's sanctions to be delivered any time. Being that it's a Friday, I wouldn't be surprised if it hits the news at 5:00 PM today (purely speculation on my part)
Rob Mosely of the Eugene Register Guard is guessing the Ducks should find out sometime next week. He also says they'll get approximately 24hrs advanced notice of the release of the sanctions, but will not receive any early knowledge of what the sanctions will be (which is contrary to information from that Duck blogger we had talked about last month).
That's policy for the NCAA. Nikegon has kept everything extremely secret during this whole process. That's antithetical to their mission, let alone any public institution. Look at private schools dealing with the NCAA. Miami didn't hide from the public. They just released everything for info. Even USC wasn't so silent on their process. They were belligerent and complete ass-holes. But they did all that while releasing most info and fighting the NCAA in the media. Nikegon is just shut up about this whole thing.
Now they can't hide. The NCAA releases its findings to the public regardless of your public/private status as a school. They do give 24 hour notice (meaning the school knows 24 hours in advance what, if any, penalties are coming). If all holds true, don't expect Nikegon to pre-empt the NCAA announcement unless it's just a joke of a punishment and Nikegon wants to rub it in everyone's faces.
Not quite how I read it…they get notice that sactions have been determined and will be announced, but not what those sanctions are. They'll know with everyone else.
As I've always understood it, the school gets full notice 24 hours ahead of time. You might be right though. It may just be notice in order for regents or the board or whatever to gather from locales unknown in order for them to be present and dealing with the NCAA announcement as it occurs.
I think it's fair either way.
So Moseley is mistaken in his belief that, "… the Ducks will get no indication of the actual substance of the COI’s findings until the report is released to the public." ?
Did you just use the words "Moseley" and "mistaken" in the same sentence?
Shame on you.
So … what does this mean? An ole Miss booster paying a player… the school not really involved — penalties light. With UO the coaches were directly involved — how can this be a case for light sanctions? Is the Nike influence that strong?
I would really like them bent over a chair….
http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-rodriguez-has-been-vital-for-pitching-staff-success/article_7a9aaaa8-cedf-11e2-b1cd-001a4bcf887a.html
Cliff with a story on JRod. A lot of team oriented quotes which further the solid impression that these guys are truely all in for the team and not a bunch of ego's going their own way.
Not surprising for Cole Brocker to get the call as the most difficult pitcher to catch!
Well of course. Pretty damn difficult to latch on to pitches that are rarely in the strike zone!!!
Hayes drafted in the 13th round by the White Sox and Scott Schultz drafted in the 17th round to the Marlins
Dan Child drafted in the 18th round by the Phillies
Observations from watching this mornings Super Regional games (UNC&SC, FSU&Ind). The pitchers are not on the same level as Beaver's starters, all of these teams swing the bat well and will hit mistakes hard.
So is the pitching at OSU better or worse than the teams you saw?
Better, by a good margin IMO.
Live Stream location please ?
I don't know if it's streamed. It's on ESPNU if you've got that.
Thanks. I don't. Have to be away from home today. Hoping for help on the Live Stream !
Go Beavs !!
1-2-3 first for Boyd. His curveball is filthy tonight.
I'd like to see him get ahead in the count and not have to throw so many pitches.
Home plate ump is squeezing Boyd
I was just typing that. It's bad.
Jake Rodriguez throws out another runner. Scoreless after 1 1/2 innings
Boyd is going to need a few quick innings if he wants to go deep in this game. Nearly 40 pitches after two. 0-0 bottom of 2.
Boyd is adapting to this ump, the K for the second out was, I think, the first time he was ahead in the count. Several throws to first adding to the possible coming fatigue factor.
So far Beavs not taking too many pitches, the KState kid hasn't thrown nearly as many pitches as has Boyd.
Going to the b4, TV shows Boyd at 65 pitches. Still would like to see Boyd get a quick inning in order to have a good chance at going deep into the game.
Conforto going YARD!!!!
What a bomb by Conforto!
I can't watch game on computer with Comcast. Any other way to get it?
Is there a Live Stream ?
Going to b5, 2-0 good guys! Boyd at about 86 pitches, can't seem to get that quick inning.
In the rundown where Boyd tagged the guy out, did it look like the ump was warning Boyd for the way he made the tag? Looked like he simply did his job against a runner who was charging him with the intent of dislodging the ball.
2 – 1 after 6 and a half. Could have been a lot worse.
"Baseball been berry, berry good to me." How did we end up with the old Garrett Morris SNL character as our TV announcer?
More updates please…in Oahu's North Shore and this is only link to the game!
In the b6, Beavs up 2-1, KState brings in a new pitcher after the starte begins the inning walking Smith.
New pitcher throws wide on Peterson's nice SAC bunt. Runners at 1 and 2 no outs for Conforto.
Davis with horrible AB.
Yeah, Davis really chased some bad pitches.
Barnes ends the inning with a GO to first baseman.
Going to the 7th, 2-1 Beavs, Boyd coming out for the 7th, if recent history hold he'll not face more than two batters. About 114 pitches at the start of the inning.
Starting to get rather annoyed at how Pat Casey handles a man on third with one out. Oddd of winning takes a big leap with evrn one more run but he continues to play odds that are abouy .270 that we will get a hit instead of bunting in the darn run. This minor change and he is about the perfectvoach. This is occuring too frequently and will cost a team in the CWS.
Beavs haven’t been executing well with RISP, the opposition is too good from here on out to not get itdone
Boyd finally gets a quick inning, retires KState 1-2-3 in the 7th. About 122 pitches now.
End of 7, still 2-1, Schultz coming on to start the 8th. If he can return to his early-mid season form he may be able to make this 1 run lead hold up. Tall order.
Schultz 1 pitch – 1 out. Then an infield single and Max E. comes on with 1 out and runner on 1st. Schultz looked sharp to me, but a pretty small sample!
Oddly quick hook for Schultz. Let’s hope the Beavs coaches look like geniuses after this.
This ump is squeezing the Beavs.
Damn, fisher had a great at bat. No wonder their OBP is high.
No kidding! All day KState has forced long at bats.
Shying away from the big moment?
This ump doesn’t see perfect pitches. Needs some computer simulator training or something.
That injury doesn’t happen if the ref calls a clear strike. Butterfly effect.
With bases loaded, 2 out, and a 1-1 count Max E. can't go on, lower back problem apparently. On comes Jace Fry who has pitched less than 3 innings this season!
Isn't this the moment that we have been waiting for from Fry?!?
Fry gets out of the inning. Throws three pitches: a strike, foul, ground out FC.
To the b8, 2-1. Max Gordon to lead off.
Fry comes through. Seems like Casey has no trust in Schultz anymore.
Last couple of appearances didn't raise Schultz's stock with anyone. He looked good to me today, situational change I suppose.
Such a Jace Fry fan!
Never mind.
I've noticed we haven't been patient at the plate lately. Swinging at a lot of 2-0, 1-0 pitches after the opposing pitcher walked or got hit by one of our guys. I hope Casey notices this reinforcing the importance of pitch count on the opposing pitcher. Make them pitch until they throw a strike — instead we've been helping them with the quick outs. They need to correct this or they won't last long!!!
Go Beavs!
Fry throwin strikes, but a two out triple followed by an RBI single ties it up.
Going to b9 2-2. Barnes to leadoff.
K State with big momentum right here. This is an ugly spot to be in…
Does not look good.
OT but anyone else notice Cliff is leaving to cover the Crimson Tide in Alabama?
…anyone else imagine he's in for a rude awakening? That's the big time, and I can't imagine fluff stories and minimal (and usually late) coverage of team news and updates are going to cut it.
The team is not ready for the moment, clearly being outplayed by K State.
crap
Fry serves up a double, a K, and an RBI single. 3-2 KState, runner on 1 with one out, on comes Dan Childs. Gotta say the double wasn’t just “sun aided” it was due entirely to the sun.
Why put in the wildest thrower on the staff? Casey has made some questionable calls. Team is making dumb mistakes. Total implosion.
Ball game.
K-State is impressive. Working counts and clutch hits.
Beavs O is terrible. Pitching is bound to have a bad day, too much pressure on the staff.
Same issues as the regionals. At-bats with RISP have been brutal, forces the pitchers to be perfect. Fry was put in a big spot and has hardly pitched. Engelbrekt injury was huge.
This sucks.
The old passed ball trick!
Conforto swings at ball 4 then takes strike 3. Sums it up.
Some horrible 9th inning at bats.
You nailed it. Our batters made it easy on their pitching staff.
Yes, AND…their batters made it hard on our pitching staff!
Yup.
Brutal.
That was their Mulligan.
The post from last week still holds; not a Friday team.
I'm out of the country and none of the radio apps work through the servers here and I don't have espnu on my comcast account so I decided not to get up early just to "watch" gametracker. When I turned on my computer the Beavs were up 2-1 with 2 down in the 9th. And K-state down to their last strike. What a disaster. Not to worry though guys I won't be tuning in the next couple of days. If it's any consolation for Beaver fans, Fullerton was eliminated by ucla today, losing 3-0 even though they tallied 11 hits.
Hope you are enjoying whatever you are doing out of the country because tonight was painful to watch.
Business trip so probably not having as much fun as GWH as it sounds like he's in Hawaii. It is probably better that I'm here otherwise I would've been at the game and since they don't sell alcohol, Hari Kari might have been in order. I still like our chances though. Bounce back like they did against WSU and it's on to Omaha.
Talking to friends in Hawai'i, they're hating that the trade winds are dead right now.
Went out for halibut yesterday and came home to see this score.
Was this another bullpen issue?
Beavs lost this game at the plate, undisciplined at bats and the inability to push across any insurance runs
Jack it was brutal! 1 run lead in the 9th with 2 outs and a full count with no one on base… ending in a 4 run loss in the 10th. One of the more epic meltdowns in all of sports in recent memory.
I was in Hawaii on business as well…took a couple days for playing. Brought the Mrs. On a companion fare so she lounged at the beach for basically free.
"What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Peral Harbor?" *
Bluto Blutarsky 1978
Inspiration….JB
Sorry meant Peral Harbor…. Susy walked by and my goofy glasses got all fogged up. Still hot at 74!! JB
Pearl dammit Pearl! JB
Is Pearl your mistress?
Intereting next one or two gamse. K-State used their one decent starting pitcher. Rest are horrible. Beavs hitting is horrible. Who wins, bad hitting or bad pitching?
Flipside, Beavs have good pitching and K-state has good hitting.
This is a weird matchup all around. Feel like K-state's offense might be in the Beavs' starting pitchers heads'. They probably think if they give up 3 it's game over, and K-state doesn't seem to swing at any balls so they have to come over the plate.
Nervous.
I wasn't able to watch the game, but watching the game cast and reading twitter/people's posts on here, it sounds like we didn't have the quality at bats we had been having the past couple of weeks. If we can get back to having good at bats and working the count and making their pitchers work for outs, we should be fine and come away with the victory. It's a double edged sword being in win or go home situation, I think this team is menatally tough enough to bounce back and play better than yesterday.
Does anyone know if there is going to be a steam of the game?
"Who wins, bad hitting or bad pitching?" Well said, Angry. My thoughts exactly.
Minus the mistakes, if Andrew Moore plays for average we win today's game….if Ben Wetzler plays for average we win tomorrow's game….Unfortunately our hitting has been subpar, and we are making guys with 4 ERAs look like guys with 2 ERAs. Beavs need to score 5+ runs each game to win this series, so the 1 run differentials do not matter….yes this reminds me a lot like the WSU series….we controlled game 1 until dumb mistakes (errors, hit batsman, multiple base on balls in the same inning) doomed us in late innings. CWS winning teams do not make these types of mistakes on a regular basis and expect to be bailed out by a good inning of pitching or double plays when the bases are juiced. With the way we are hitting, we will not win today or tomorrow if we make the type of mistakes we were making yesterday (I'm starting to sound like a political speech).
Beavs!!!!
Saw a stat earler from John Hunt
In Andrew Moore's three starts on the day after an OSU loss: 24.2 IP, 0 R.
L'ville beats Vandy. Quite the year for them in all the major sports. Indiana knocks out FSU.
We seem to have a very low margin of error offensively compared to most of these teams. Lots of pitchers who can really light up the JUGS gun compared to our guys.
First time actually seeing Child pitch. What a weird throwing motion. He looks like the guy trying to teach his kid to throw a football in that car commercial. Hopefully he is not our Sunday starter next year.
F u rice-NCst
Conforto going YARD again!
Dylan Davis playing copy cat!
WHY WONT ESPN SWITCH???
Because they are stupid…..or really hate the PAC 12?
As of right now, I think bad hitting is beating bad pitching.
Live Stream ? Help !
No shit…ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3 all playing NCST…B-Holes
Live Stream ? Help !!
http://www.tvonlinelive.net/Watch/ESPN2-Online-16.html
That's what I'm using. If it doesn't work for you good "watch espn online" and you should be able to find one that works for you.
Thank you Bone……………..
it's on espn2 now
What a difference from yesterday, Keyes with a 10 pitch AB, gets infield single. And then JRod with a 2 RBI hit makes it 5-0 good guys!!!
Danny Hayes is the undisputed team leader in ball scratching and nut adjustment LOL.
Hey that can be a very underrated role.
Just turned the game on. What a pleasant surprise this is!
Another single for Keyes, he only forced 3 pitches this time, no complaints here! Runners on 1 and 2 with no out t3, 3rd pitcher comes on now for KState.
The Beavers' approach at the plate has been pheomenal. Working the count and not trying to do too much. A lot of hits up the middle and the other way. They look a lot more relaxed at the plate tonight than they have for a couple weeks.
Supreme irony that the other regions are having rain delays and it is picture perfect in rainy Corvallis, OR.
….and the bats are alive….let's hope they save 5+ runs for tomorrow!!!
Lets hope there is a game tomorrow, long way to go. Lookin so good, hear it in Parkers voice?
What a relief…just landed in San Diego waiting on our connecting flight. Long trip over the pond. Keep the updates coming!
9-3 end of 4, Keyes to leadoff in the 5th. Moore got out of a bases loaded, no outs 4th giving up 2 runs on SacFlies.
Pitch count going up for Andrew. Game far from over.
What is Englebrekt's health status?
Undergoing treatment all day today, not available tonight and unlikely for tomorrow. No details from Parker on the treatment.
Peterson with a 2 strike RBI infield single, an answer to the 2 runs KState got in the 4th. Conforto up now with runners at 1 and 2, 2 outs. And………he grounds out to second, missed opportunity there.
72 pitches for Moore as he starts the 5th giving up a single on pitch #73. Looks like we are gonna again see Beavs BP before this is over.
Pitch #77 yields a DP and #78 results in Moore making a nice play on a bunt for the third out!!
Parker just said if a game 3 happen, it will be moved from 4:00PM to 7:00PM for tv coverage. In my opinion this is good news because of the sunlight issue and the lack of hits that seem to happen in games starting at 4:00 at Goss.
In the live chat on O-live the other day, the writer for KState felt a 7pm start (today) was a disadvantage to KState because of the time difference from their home. Maybe that would also apply Monday.
FWIW I am not sold on this theory, almost think the sun problems with a 4pm are more of a negative for a strong hitting team like KState.
Game 3 officially is a 7 PM start
First two outs of the 6th require only 4 pitches, third out 2 more for a totall of 6 pitches in the inning. This is the type of quick inning Boyd needed yesterday.
Going to the 7th, 10-3 Beavs. Keyes to leadoff.
Keyes a single, JRod a sliding double and Gordon on on an error; bases loaded for Smith with no outs.
Was gonna say that Angry hit it on the head with his bad pitching vs bad hitting comment, but the hitting is looking good today and not just because of the bad pitching.
This is a teachable and focused group, great response to the loss Saturday.
14 pitches for Moore to finish the 7th, I believe he is at 100 right now. Going to the 8th, Hayes to leadoff.
GWH, are you still wanting updates?……I don't want to bore anyone.
Thanks man!
He is not the only one…..thanks much!
Yes!
Hayes a leadoff single, goes no further. Three fly/pop outs to end the Beavs half of the 8th. KState puts in several subs at the start of the inning in an apparent bid to get rest for the regulars. They are on their 6th pitcher.
JRod handles a foul tip strike three for the first out, he had problems (not all his fault) yesterday with tips.
Second out, a fly out to Davis. Two outs have required 7 pitches.
Going to the t9, 11-3. Moore has thrown 115 pitches, Parker thinks he is done but I'm not so sure.
Who's pitching for k states tmw.
TBD
Edit: From Hunts story after the game, “Kansas State coach Brad Hill said he will have to cobble together nine innings worth of pitching somehow.”
Matthews ph for Gordon, gets a bloop DOUBLE and comes home on a single by Smith, 12-3 good guys.
Don’t ya just love the sound of the fat lady singin!!
Just need to hand off to Storm and run out the clock.
Moore is over 120 pitches. Why is he still in the game?
I think Casey wanted to give him a chance for the CG, a quick inning was not too much to hope for, just didn't work out.
Moore pulled at about 124 pitches, bases loaded nobody out. Keyes a throwing error, a single and a BB lead to this. Along the way JRod had a PB which is of no matter what with the BB.
Schultz to take the mound. IMO he looked better yesterday than in his last two appearances, if he can get a K or two and finish strong it should go a long way toward getting him mentally ready to resume his early/mid season ways.
Schultz gets a FC and a fly out to Hendrix (playing CF in place of Gordon who was hit for), gets a 1-2 count then 3 fouls and a ball bring it to 2-2 before a GO to Hayes.
How many times earlier in the season did we see Schultz get 1 or 2 K’s in a situation like that?
Beavs win 12-4 on 21 hits.
….and there's the blowout….I figured somebody would get blown-out in this series….don't think it will happen again though….only need one more run than them to win tomorrow!!
Go Beavs!!!
Seems like K State puts the ball in play pretty efficiently. Good job, Beavers!
….now just one more.
Oh, great Beaver in the sky…..grant them the will and strength to persevere..
Think that's the first "great Beaver in the sky" reference I've heard before. Not sure how I feel about that one….
Louisville, Indiana, NC State, UCLA and LSU are in. And it looks like Miss State will likely get in, leaving OSU/KSU and UNC/USC as the two toss-ups. I say MSU is likely in for one reason. Look at the first four schools in the first sentence. They have something in common with MSU which they don't share with anyone else in the supers.
It's too bad FAU didn't make it. They're one too.
The Mo is with the Beavs, first few innings Monday should tell a lot. Wetzler used to have shakey starts and then settle down, but that hasn't been the case as of late.
Key is gonna be taking advantage of their bad pitching, hope Angry is right in saying they only have the one good arm and he's not coming back with one days rest….is he?
And it seems like our let-downs are the first game of a series.
GO BEAVS!!
I have a question.
Apparenly, six of eight teams who win the first game of a super regional have moved on to Omaha since 2009 as this article tells us.
If MSU downs UVA in the first game this afternoon, that statistic will have been satisfied for 2013.
Wouldn't that mean the odds are in favor of OSU and USC? Wouldn't it be UNC and KSU defying those same odds?
The game is on at 7:00 tonight, not 4:00, right?
Yes
ESPN 2, I see. My cable box schedule looked confused this a.m.
Just made it to the hotel and checked the score. 21 hits are you kidding me? And b2b dingers for Conforto/ Davis is music to my ears. Hopefully tomorrow (my time) I'll check in for similar results.
Go Beavs!!
Any AB's planning to be at Goss tonight?
Parker seemed concerned about attendance, said there are two high school graduations which, along with it being a weekday, were likely to mean no sellout.
Was wondering the same thing about attendance. I just don't know many Portlanders who would drive south for a 7:00 baseball game on a weeknight. Corvallis doesn't have a large enough poulation to fill Goss on it's own. I just don't see a sellout happening tonight which is too bad considering the magnitude of the game. Not sure why the NCAA started this series on a Saturday. Means less rest for the winner of tonight's game going into Omaha.
Not too mention that students are now in finals…
I'll be there.
Great, I'll be there, and watching for your AB hat!………ooops, we never got those distributed, did we.
Does anybody know which teams play the first day(next Sat) in Omaha?
Indiana-Louisville and Mississippi State/Virginia-Kansas State/Oregon State
Should say that's a likely scenario, but don't know for sure until the supers are over with.
Will they announce it tonight? Road trip possible if they play Sat.!!!!!
Not until tomorrow cause South Carolina and UNC won't play their third game until tomorrow night
Over at buildingthedam, he says the winner of tonight's game plays Miss St Sunday at 5:00 PDT.
Crap. Hope they are wrong.
Beavers play 12 PT on Saturday if they hold on and win
Eggers seems to think 6 runs would be enough to win it tonight. Certainly possible if Ben performs as we'd like, is it 7pm yet?
http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/154262-its-one-for-all-the-marbles-for-wetzler-beavers-monday-night
I'm watching Miss State self-destruct right now.
And they finally finish off UVA.
That's six supers complete and six dogpiles.
After tonight I expect it to be eight complete with seven dogpiles.
*tomorrow – just heard UNC/USC was rained out until tomorrow and our game is still scheduled for 7pm.
As in you don't expect the Beavs to dogpile after they win tonight? That's what I'm hoping for anyway, dogpile time is after winning the World Series not a Super Regional.
I will hopefully be taking part in a 1 man dogpile tonight in my living room
Kinky!
Tebow is gonna be a Patriot? WTF?

Might be a good time to call up Adidas for some new unis ASAP!
We better not go Adidas. They are putting out uniforms that are so ugly, they make oregons look good.
Is the game on ESPN3 tonight….? I'm getting conflicting results.
Yes, getting it right now.
Well, that was quick…
That's what she said.
I served that one up just for you Goph!
Peterson with two ugly at bats.
Keyes!
So far so good! Already getting to KSUs depleted bullpen. Some good plate discipline can finish them off.
Huge sell on a tag that wasn't!
Yes, but that runner seemed to be outside the basepath anyway AND even if you feel hw was in the basepath that call was more than made up later in the game when the KSU runner tried to decleat Keyes while sliding "into third."
Which brings up something that was I noticed…their players seemed to be dicks…pointing to their number when making a hit, trying to decleat Keyes, their fans especially that one screetching woman that was going apeshit every positive KSU play Saturday…something just made them seem less than deserving and made me more than happy when they got to watch their dreams go poof. Screw them.
Go Beavs!
One KState female fan was calling for a double play when they already had two outs! Everyone around me got a kick out of that.
Jake Rodriguez is starting to catch fire at the plate. He's been smoking pitches the last 2 days. Good sign is he's smoking these pitches up the middle and the other way. Having a great approach at the plate.
Terrible strike out by Smith. Starting to get nervous. Need a 5 or 6 pitch inning by Ben.
Any link available to watch the game on iPhone?
Try the watchespn app.
Heart rate is increasing a little bit. Boyd coming in.
Damn this is so intense.
CONFORTO!!!!
that was so clutch!
Great play by Conforto. Wow. Love how jrod blocked the runner.
Wow!
Bad feeling.
Not sure about that bunt attempt. Wow.
Good feelings!
Ya man!!
Here we go! Bottom of the 9th 4-3. Let's go beavs!!!
How isn't Boyd still sore?
gamer,
This game is killing me. I am sucking down beer.
GO BEAVS!!!!
K-State played a hell of a series considering their poor pitching staff.
Boyd is the man and should have been a starter all along. Can't believe he saved that game after throwing 123 pitches on Saturday.
Their batting discipline was unreal. Boyd save the day.
Yeah, I really liked their style.
All these opponents have been gutty and tough. It's been good baseball.
Great edge of seat win. Enjoy it and savor it. Lack of situational lefty/righty relievers could prove to be a problem next week.
Gave me acid reflux……again.
Go Beavs!
World Series bound! Great performance by Boyd! Get some ice on that arm for Saturday!
Thank you, great Beaver in the sky!!
They deserved that dog-pile, that was a hard fought series against tough competitors. They took pitches like nobody's business, very disciplined. Wow, just wow, Boyd. And so stressful. Woohoo!!!!
Glory!
There would be no way to put a positive spin on this season had we lost this series. This is an "Omaha or Bust" team if OSU has ever had one. Solid in every facet, great in several. I was pacing the last three innings, especially when they started to get to Wetzler. What a gutsy performance he had, but I can't say enough about Boyd coming in and getting the save after throwing over 120 pitches on Saturday. Great defense all night – loved JRod tonight as always – the throwout at third, the tagout on the throw from Conforto. What a night for that kid.
Which was better.
Conforto's play against Oregon or tonights?
The play against Oregon – that's the first thing I thought of when the announcer said it was "the defensive play of his career."
I would agree that the Oregon was the better play, but tonights was bigger.
The sign of a championship team = play like @$&%@#$ and still win….ugly win tonight Beavs…..thought Casey left Wetzler in one inning too long. Whhooooooweeeee!!!! Reminds of the Michigan game before we won it all….they don't come easy — time to light it up!!!!
Go Beavs
Plays like Keyes baserunning blunder can kill a championship run. I love to see players sprint until the ball is over the fence even on no-doubt dingers.
Felt more like the Cal State Fullerton game at the 2007 CWS. Extremely tight nail biter until the end and the Beavers pulled it out. I'll take a similar finish to that season for this CWS run.
Beavers in a CWS bracket with Louiseville (upset Vanderbuilt), Mississippi State (upset Virginia), and Indiana (upset Florida State). I like our chances!
How sweet it is. Win and advance is all this team is focused on.
K State with a line up that put pressure on for every single at bat, no easy outs on that team. A couple of their players seemed like dick heads, specifically the 2b & ss which made the win that much sweeter.
If Keyes and Rodriguez keep swinging hot bats at the back half of the lineup then i like our chances.
A win is a win is a win. I like to think these types of wins are really good for the team. They are going to be facing a bunch of scrappy teams who upset higher seeds. Beavs need to know how to scrap.
Couple takeaways,
1. After game 1 bullpen implosion, it looks like the bullpen will be shortened even further. Starters will be asked to do more. I do wonder if there is something wrong with Dan Child.
2. Offense needs to pick up the pitchers. Boyd, Moore and Wetzler are the bulldogs as the announcers described them as but they could use more help from the offense.
3. Production from the bottom of the lineup. Need to get guys on base when the lineup turns over.
I think Fry and Schultz should be the top 2 guys out of the 'pen. Liked what I saw from Schultz in game 2 of the super regional. Started locating much better and forcing guys to pound the ball into the ground. Fry will be a good guy against lefties and is building up strength in his arm. Would like to see Jackson given some time as well. He's been good this year, strange how he isn't gotten into a game in such a long time. But if the starters keep doing what they're doing, the bullpen may not have to pitch a whole lot in Omaha.
7-9 in the order was great the last 2 nights. 9 hits and got on base 12 times. Gordon wasn't geting his hits but executing the bunts extremely well and worked counts. If the bottom of the order produces like that in the CWS, the offense should score their share of runs.
I think Kansas St. had a good pitching strategy in this series. With their lack of pitchers who can go the distance, they threw a ton of pitchers at us keeping our batters off balance and not able to get into a zone at the plate.
My takeaways from last night's game:
As someone else said, that KSU lady fan who screamed every time was SUPER annoying, but a couple OSU ladies started doing the same thing mockingher, that was pretty funny.
Wetzler left in 3 innings too long, they were getting to him as his pitches slowed but our defense pulled it out and saved him. The writing was on the wall. Again as someone else said, Casey's faith in our bullpen is on the wane apparently.
Not being able to buy Beaver merchandise at the games this weekend sucked. Stupid NCAA rules.
The drive from Corvallis to Hillsboro is fuckin long at 11pm on a work night, but it's made shorter by a victory.
Yeah, I went thinking there'd be 500 or so empty seats due to the work night thing (and Parkers info that two HS graduations would negatively effect attendance). Scalpers made out OK but it was worth it!
Great to shake hands with the kids after the game, is it true that that doesn't happen down south?
Not that I care, and not that I know what happened after they beat Fresno in 1954, but it is true down south that their players haven't thanked the crowd after a super regional win since then.
Great quote from Casey in Eggers article, http://www.pamplinmedia.com/pt/9-news/154322-beavers-trip-wildcats-write-their-ticket-to-omaha
When asked how it felt to be taking this team to Omaha, "They're taking me," he said. "I've been there. I hope that part of it helps the guys who haven't been there. But they're taking me." Says a lot about the coach.
For anybody who cares about this type of thing, my wife got word from the local fabric store that they'll be receiving the new Oregon State tartan/plaid fabric design soon. I'm pumped because she'll be making some infant clothes for our upcoming little Beaver. (I know I'm setting myself up for some solid Beavergopher jokes here….)
Which store?
Mill End store in Portland/Milwaukie
Just saw that the Detroit Lions are preparing to hire Lane Kiffin? Really? timing seems off. I was really starting to like USC with Kiffin at the helm.
Maybe it was just a twitter joke that I didn't get. Not seeing any news on the topic
Maybe Detroit thinks they need some eighth grade talent on their roster?
… and on their coching staff.
Coching?
A typo… but I think it better describes what Kiffin does.
That would be crotching.
It was a joke. Dwight Jaynes trying to be funny because the Detroit Pistons got fooled into hiring Maurice Cheeks as their head coach today, even though he's sucked pretty much everywhere he's been a coach.
The joke is funny as a troll. But now that we have an explanation it's kinda lame.
I replied that it's similar to "Report: Dwight Jaynes hired by Comcast"
Regarding Keyes screw up. Did any of you catch the close up of him as he is jogging around first? When he sees that it went off the wall you can see that he clearly says "Oh Fuck" and then starts hauling ass. Really funny at the time but could have been a killer. Hope Casey and teamates got on his ass for that. BTW we got a major gift on the missed tag at second on that critical DP. Anti Luck-O the Beavs?
I was watching it on DVR and replayed that part back when it happened. Agree, it was funny at the time, but also a boneheaded mistake.
Regarding the phantom tag call, does anybody know the baserunning rules for college ball? He clearly avoided the tag by running perpendicular to Peterson who was there to make the tag. Can't find video of it, but what are the limits of running outside the base path to avoid the tag?
Ump signaled that the runner left the path (whatever it is), that's good enough for me!
Anybody going to Omaha?
I'll be there for the first two games. flying to KC and driving up.
See you there
Road trip!
With South Carolina out, OSU (2) and LSU (6) are the only past CWS champions left. UCLA (once) and UNC (twice…YAY!) are the only other schools to even make it to the final game/series. OSU and LSU are undefeated in the finals. All the other three are on the other side of the bracket.
CWS appearances including this year:
UNC (10) v. NCSt (2), UCLA (5) v. LSU (16)
Louisville (2) v. Indiana (1), OSU (5) v. MSU (9)
UCLA has never won?
Nope. Current Pac teams' appearances/titles before this year:
UA – 16/4 (three after joining the Pac)
ASU – 22/5 (one after joining the Pac)
Cal – 6/2
CU – N/A
Nikegon – 1/0
OSU – 4/2 (both after joining the Pac… the real Pac in baseball)
SU – 16/2
UCLA – 4/0
USC – 21/12
Utah – 1/0
UW – 0/0
Wazzu – 4/0
Remember that D1 baseball only had about 24-30 schools in the Tourney until 1975 when it went to a regional format with 32 teams. It was based on conference championships and loosely based regional indy's getting in. They started seeding in 1975 and upped it to 34 schools for a couple years before going to 36 schools then going to 48 schools with regions of six teams from 1988 to 1998. We've had the current format for only 15 years now. And I do think it's the best. I wouldn't care if the NCAA decided to put a couple mid-week play-ins to add to the spectacle so teams like UA or Campbell don't get left out. But I think like in hoops that should only be a bubble type situation which goes no further than a handful of teams. They're put at a disadvantage by having to use up their pitching before they even get to a regional. But at least they get a shot.
Last CWS appearance for each school:
Indiana – never
NCSt – 1968
OSU, MSU, Louisville – 2007
LSU – 2009
UNC – 2011
UCLA – 2012
Does Boyd coming in to close last night in anyway affect the pitching rotation going into this weekend? After such a high pitch count in game 1 and then coming in to close out game 3, is there enough time for him to be ready to go for Saturday or are we going to have to tweek the pitching rotation? It's not a scenario I have seen much in baseball to know for sure.
I think it makes it more likely we see Moore starting on Saturday, Boyd on Monday and Wetzler for rgame 3 now that they used Boyd last night. Give Boyd a full week's rest and he should be ready to go.
It's the way baseball used to be. But that was back when kids didn't use up their arms starting when they were eight years old. Four days rest was the norm some 20+ years ago.
That being said, I think Casey shuffles Moore and Boyd and leaves Wetzler as the third game clincher. Moore pitching on a Saturday is as natural as it gets. Wetzler scaring the hell out me before closing a series with a win is also natural. With Boyd's extra work and so little run support in first games, he could use the rest.
Hell… just spit-balling here, but Moore could go Saturday. Assuming we win (which I don't), Wetzler could go again Monday, and Boyd could become the closer for each. And Moore could go again on the folowing Friday. Then it's a M/T/W series best of three with UNC going down in flames.
Oh… I wasn't going to assume anything.
The schedule could make for some very interesting strategy regarding starting pitching, and I think actually hurts the Beavers who have the best three starters in the country for a three game / three day series. If the Beavers win Saturday and Monday they don't play again until Friday needing a single win to advance (would you start your Saturday starter here?). If they lose the first or second game they get to play on Wednesday and again on Friday, and would require a fifth game on Saturday to advance.
All of this with the best of three finals starting a few days later on Monday. Try to get your noodle around that. Although Jack seems to have accomplished that already, and if we don't lose makes the strategizing a lot easier.
Schedule is here:
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/9316141/ncaa-baseball-tournament-results
Not to go all "Beavergopher" on ya, but I think Jack's noodle is probably pretty flexible/limp!
Holy Great Beaver In the Sky!
Once out of a couple hundred, and you just have to beat up on me?
You're lucky I don't kiss and tell… one… and old… beav.
Hoops facility opening stream now.
Bobby D's first line was to congratulate the baseball team. Apparently '06+'07='13.
Archive http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w33WuRDzLDk Does Bobby D know he's not charismatic; and cuts short his speech? Has Craig Robinson lost weight? That would be a good thing.
Now all we need is a coach.
Finally got to catch up on all things Beaver (a softball for BG). Great job to finish off the SR. I know most thought this was possible before the start of the season but it was confirmed in my mind when I was told I was going to be in India for the month of June after I had been trying to figure out how to get to Omaha all spring. Oh well, being CWS champs again would be a great consolation for having to suffer Mumbai traffic. And not to mention the monsoons started 2 days early.
Go Beavs!
If you wonder how Casey feels about playing on Saturday instead of Sunday just check out Eggers latest: http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/154363-beavers-casey-faces-next-task
hint: rhymes with "toes mob"
Love the guy. He does not pull his punches. Great response.
OT: Football. Don't get me wrong, I am really excited for Omaha and all of the success the baseball team has had this year, but has anyone heard or read about any offense or defensive developments for Beavs Football 2013 recently?
Is there an angrybeavs football forum I am missing right now or would anyone recommend any sites to visit for updates? Thanks in advance and Go Beavs.
New AZ Wildcats facemasks….
well, i tried to add the pic to my last post but looks like it got dropped. link below
http://sicollegefootball.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/arizona-masks-top.jpg?w=610&h=310
that is absolutely hideous. is that for real?
From what i recall it's just a prototype.
Yeah… ugly. It might have sounded better on paper.
An Oregon "O" version of that would be appropriate….c**k suckers….
This guy is saying the Ducks get their advanced warning likely today, and public will find out the results within 24 hrs of that. Same Duck blogger who was predicting sanctions last month because of his "inside sources"

There are rumblings we will hear about sabctions by end of week; maybe today. To the consternation of some, nothing too harsh

@ScottReed_DSA Won't be today. Ducks will get 24 hours notice and that hadn't happened as of late last night.

@DuckFootball I agree… Some of those starting the rumor forgot about the 24 hours… We may hear the 24 hour notice today
Better?
better than what?
Blarg, I tried adding the actual pic downsized but no bueno.
Graduation. A job. No more tuition…and a victory in Omaha on Saturday. Sweet
Anyone know the status of the Beaver Baseball commits that got drafted? Any of them sign yet?
Tyler O'Neill signed with the Mariners, that's going to be the only committed player to sign.
That stinks.
Who will play SS and 2nd base next year?
Trevor Morrision a SS, rated in the top 150 draft eligible players is coming. He was drafted but had always said he was going to go to college. Think of him like Conforto. Rated highly as a defender.
Peterson is coming back to play 2B. There should be more concern as to who will play first base as Hayes and Barnes are seniors.
I expect Rodriguez, Child and Schultz to be back. Doubtful Wetzler will stay but with Eden coming in, it should offset the loss.
Logan Ice is a good prospect as well, C/1B, switch hitter. I'm sure he'll get early playing time, so should be in the mix at 1B.
Awesome name.
Anybody know anybody with extra tickets(2) to the game against MSU?
Does anyone know if we are the home team for game 1 for sure?
Yes, Oregon State is the home team for game 1
Does anyone know if you can buy $11 pints of Old Style at the game?

Maybe this was previously posted – it reminds me one of those newspaper articles that has you reading it but has "advertisement" in very fine print in the lower corner.
Among the choice tidbits:
Coach Casey quotes from Omaha:
COACH CASEY: I'm equally thrilled to be here, Beaver Nation, and our baseball program, and obviously congratulations to not only the clubs that are here, but in particular the clubs that we faced to get here. And everybody knows baseball is a grind. It's a long, long season. I think that if there's anything I would say about our club, there's really nothing that's going to wow you I don't think. We've been really consistent from the beginning of the year. We've got consistent front line pitching. We've played defense well enough to keep us into most baseball games. We have some guys in the middle of the order that can hit but nothing that's going to necessarily wow you. I just think that we play well together.
Q: Coach Casey, Coach Cohen here said you are going to go with the senior guy. I know you've got a senior, you've got a good freshman, have you made your decision there who you're going with?
COACH CASEY: Well, we got an e mail Monday sometime during the Super Regional that will let us know they'd flipped the bracket on us. And so we want to go with Matt Boyd. We are planning on going with Matt Boyd. We went to practice and had him throw, and I actually haven't talked to him.
But Mo's ready to go too. So there's no secret that we threw Matt on Monday, threw him in an inning in the third, if he feels good we'll go with him. If not we'll go with Mo. We'll know that at 6:00 when I get back.
We were planning on playing tomorrow, or Sunday, excuse me.
Q. Pat, what's the situation with Engelbrekt your closer and his back and how does that reshuffle your bullpen if he's not available?
COACH CASEY: He tweaked his back a little bit. I don't know what day that was. And he's been making steady progress. I don't know how he's going to feel tomorrow. He felt good today. He was not 100 percent today. Certainly wouldn't help our bullpen. And it's kind of an unfortunate thing. But that's somebody needs to pick him up and make sure if he's not able to throw that they're able to fill that gap.
If he's able to throw, then bring some encouragement to some of the rest of the guys. And I think it will be okay but I don't know that for sure.

Hunt tweets, "Andrew Moore is officially the starter for Oregon State's CWS opener Saturday against Mississippi State."
Similar to my college career, cramming the night prior….
http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/college-world-series-preview/
And some numbers…for information only….
Oregon State -225 on the moneyline for game 1–Yikes!
To win the World Series +315
To be the first team eliminated +475
I'm not familer with sports betting, what do those numbers mean?
I had to look that up and understood it like you'd have to bet 225 to win 100 that OSU would win game one and if you bet 100 that OSU won the world series you'd win 315. You can then compare those numbers to the other teams numbers and see how much of a favorite each team is etc. Something like that.
CWS thread, angry! (All best)
