17-14 Gonzaga with 11’55” in the half. OSU was up 9-2 on several Gonzaga turnovers. OSU isn’t getting a lot of rebounds and while the D is making the Zags work deep into the shot clock, they’re getting high percentage shots and nailing them.
Morrison????? I can’t believe it, had no clue he had power like that.
O/OFFT: Anyway, women’s game is good so far. Could cut down on the turnovers and they have a shot to win this easy.
As far as the men’s bracket, anyone surprised at Wichita St? I called it, but I had UVa and IowaSt in the Final 4. So I got the little stuff right and the big stuff wrong.
The refs have no control over this game. They let Gonzaga get away with anything for a while, then bring the hammer down again for a while. No consistency. They’re missing lots of travels too.
Did you hear the announcer going on about how Tinkle’s daughter had such bad shooting mechanics
they had to to totally change her shot. Dad must love that!
Great defender, pretty much our only player that knows how to slip screens consistently. That said, she can be a liability on O a lot. Streaky shooter, misses a ton of layups, not too good of a midrange either. Hopefully she can bang a couple home for us in the 2nd half.
I forgot to complain about: the Gonzaga band keeps counting down the shot clock for OSU several seconds early. It’s pathetic. But then, so is complaining about it on a blog.
It looks like the Beavs are lackadaisical, where as Gonzaga is actually trying. Lots of sloppy play. I’d say this one is over, but there’s still time if they want it.
Vandeveer figured out the formula for beating Rueck and the beavs. They can be easily outmuscled, which you notice when the ball is either loose or bouncing around on the tips of hands in a scrum.
Beavs have no real offense. It’s stand around and wait for someone to get open for a 3. Sometimes toss it inside to Hamblin, but usually the entry passes are poor or she misses an easy layup. Nobody can back the defender down. That’s a big problem. Gonzaga is playing the opposite offense.
I don’t get this game. OSU isn’t hustling on defense at all. Does anybody know if they’re above .500 from the line? And Hamblin has been on the bench for a LONG time right now.
They looked that way a month ago. Something changed…relied too much on standing around waiting for 3s, I think. D was not as intense, either. I think they thought they were better than they were…
Agree. When they went down to Tempe and beat ASU, I thought they might be a Final Four team. But I think that was their high water mark. The last ten games of the season they felt like a team that was going to be one-and-done though. I did have some hope they’d make it to Spokane as playing at home would cover the teams weakness. That didn’t work out so well.
It’s definitely a lost art as far as the Beavs are concerned. I seem to remember Jack sputtering some last year saying (paraphrasing) it is the 2nd easiest shot – the first being a free throw. Maybe they think they don’t have to practice or do drills to improve. It’s really bad when the men can make a layup but go for a dunk and miss. Jared Cunningham (now with the Idaho Stampede) was terrific at that.
This is a tough one to stomach right now. Gonzaga truly wanted this game more than we did and that’s why they’re coming away with this one. They outplayed us in both halves. Came down to rebounding, free throw shooting, late shot clock situations, and making errant passes that did in the team. Zags got em fair and square.
I think so, too. Very obvious in the play. Maybe the refs saw that, too, and that’s why they got 90% of the iffy calls. REALLY bad reffing, but Beavs played poor and the better team won.
Beavs seemed to have an attitude of “we will figure it out at the end” or “weise will bail us out with 3s at the end”…I hate teams when teams develop that mindset. It’s natural, but you have to fight it. Coach should be all over that. Hopefully he was. They should be much better next year after learning from this, but that was an embarrassing loss on the home court with a sweet 16 on the line. Those opportunities don’t come often; you have to seize them.
I was looking at Gonzaga’s schedule. They hadn’t beaten anyone good all year. Their best win was Dayton (who took down Kentucky earlier). Pretty embarrassing.
Deven Hunter seems to ALWAYS bring a competitive, total game effort. Maybe Scott should lock her in a cage match with Ruth. Ruth is just too sweet and needs to toughen up.
Marie showed some aggressive play today as well, but not on the same level as Deven.
Too say Syd had a disappointing day is an understatement; not because of missing 8 of 9 three point attempts, but for the uncharacteristic turnovers as well.
Better days ahead, but a long wait for them.
Go BWB’s!!
Ruth worked on her footwork and defense last year. She need an inside shot to compensate for the fact she can’t jump well; along the lines of a skyhook or fall away jumper.
While Rueck gets well-deserved kudos, I felt as if he didn’t shake things up much, especially toward the season’s end. Gulich has a lot to learn but she got 5 rebounds during her minutes late in the game when the Beavs caught up. Most of all, the team seems slow. When the Beavs scored, it took no time at all for Gonzaga to answer.
This was my fourth OSU women’s game this season and they’re clearly good but I’ve never felt like they dominated any of the games I went to, even when they ought to have.
The refs were awful. They let Gonzaga get away with too much and punished OSU when they started to match Gonzaga’s physicality. I wonder how much that got into OSU’s head. I think I’ve seen this crew officiate an OSU game before and they were bad then too.
On defense, OSU often forced Gonzaga to go deep into the shot clock, but then give up the inside bucket anyway. They needed to close out possessions and contest those shots. It felt like OSU was good at keeping Gonzaga from getting to the spots they wanted, but gave up once they took the shot.
OSU almost forced a shot clock violation in the second half, but the OSU player reached in when the clock read 1. That’s the kind of mistakes that this group seems to make.
This game was lost when OSU turned it over on five consecutive possessions shortly after halftime. They dug their own hole there and nearly climbed out of it, but couldn’t finish.
All season it’s felt like the Beavs were trying to make tough plays that were just outside their grasp. Lots of too-fast passes trying to get transition baskets that turn into turnovers. Lots of passes to the interior with three opponents all in there too.
And of course there’s the aforementioned lack of hustle. I haven’t ever felt like I saw this team hustle when they didn’t need to.
I think this team will be fantastic next season. I have a lot of confidence in Scott Rueck—his teams have gotten better every season. Next year they need more hustle, they need to make layups, and they need to get more boards. They’ll be good.
It was fun getting to see so much good basketball this year. Tickets to the women’s games are only $7, so I can afford to go to every game when my schedule allows.
Does anybody know why Ruth Hamblin sat out so much of the last ten minutes?
This team will potentially be better next year, since it will be a senior heavy squad. It’s not a given though. But really they f-d up a golden opportunity this season with the 3 seed and having home court advantage. How many times is that going to happen?
They’ve got some serious problems to remedy though, for sure. Rueck has got six months to figure it out. I truly hope he won’t channel Ralph Miller and put together great regular season teams but then never do anything post season.
I was at the WBB game. My first. I was impressed at how hard they play–nothing lady-like about it. When we tied it at 64, I thought we had the momentum. Really poor passing leading to turnovers was frustrating to watch.
Of course, at an OSU vs Gonzaga game, there was a UO fan wearing a zero hat. They are such assholes. Always has to be about them.
At least the punk ass Ducks won’t be making to any round of 16 even though Wisconsin didn’t play all that great. Might Joe Young can head on down the highway.
How many Duck trolls are in here? If I was a big Quack fan this is not the first place I would be thinking about after a tough loss. I think “Victor Robbins” is still lurking!
Just wanted to see what people thought of the osu-gonzaga game. Lol, hey, know what? That “hat” did buy a ticket to get in. But I don’t understand, FD, you saw the hat “at an osu-gonzaga game”, just curious if you meant the tourney game, or some other time they played.
We just got our second commit and we may get an awesome running back with Malik Staples. I get the feeling that even the commits that do not have a lot of offers, are quality players. I have so much more confidence in these coaches. There should be no problems getting a full group of quality recruits this year. We have the Polynesian pipeline along with strengths in new states like Utah and Florida. Seth Collins was only a 2 star and he is already in the top 3 for our quarterbacks.
Derrick Odum was the recruiter for Devon Clarke (today’s commit). He’s one of the new hires that we didn’t hear much about when the new staff was brought on board, but he’s been busy with recruiting the past few weeks with some east coast offers going out and 1 commit already.
Also, interesting that Devon Clarke didn’t have a star rating on rivals before today (at least I’m pretty sure) and then today, after his commitment, he’s listed as a 3*
For those who have gone to these things before, is there normally an admission fee? $6 seems fair for an afternoon of entertainment, but I thought these things were normally free?
I never attended in the past, because it never sounded interesting (no linemen, no tackling etc) . This year, I’m actually considering making the trip down there with my kid to go watch it (if the weather is good).
go beaVs!
Anyone have a stream? I am getting this horrible South Carolina game on Comcast.
You load up the stream expecting to see Beavers and end up see Cocks.
classic bate and switch
17-14 Gonzaga with 11’55” in the half. OSU was up 9-2 on several Gonzaga turnovers. OSU isn’t getting a lot of rebounds and while the D is making the Zags work deep into the shot clock, they’re getting high percentage shots and nailing them.
Screw ESPN for moving the game over to ESPNews and preventing lots of us from being able to watch it.
Yep, just saw this. Fuck them.
Wiese with four bonehead TO’s early.
Also, OSU keeps making sloppy passes.
And getting jobbed by the refs.
Such an obvious travel. Beavs getting jobbed at home (again).
Morrison with the walkoff dinger, 3-1 Beavs… Donahue was at 3b with one out
My eyes are getting old, by the reaction of the wsu players I thought it was out but they just let it drop and is scored a double and the final 2-1.
This game is getting nasty.
.. these refs. Horrible so far.
But Gonzaga has some cute players!
Tinkles daughter is quite attractive.
Yes she is.
I noticed that.
The foul on Hamblin for a clean block was called by the ref farthest from the play. Rueck gave her an earful after that.
Such a good block, such a bad call.
After Hamblin’s last block, the Gonzaga player had a chat with the ref. Wonder what she wanted.
Gabby is cute, but she shoots like hell.
She’s pretty good at layups.
Care to retract that statement LOL.
I was being snarky!
Got it.
Gonzaga’s offense has so much better flow.
Beavs struggling to get good looks on O. Is Gonzaga this good as an #11? They look all world.
That German chick is a TO machine.
She really is an awful player. Nice face, though.
Gonzaga looked like a low single digit seed to me in that game; not merely the eyeball test but the rigorousness of their play
Seigner with another non-foul called a foul. Brutal refs. These clowns should be canned.
Refs are pretty bad.
I’d say it is time to worry. Game is in the balance here. Offense with zero flow.
Down eight, it looks like the Beavers are going down, barring some dramatic turnaround.
I don’t understand how Gonzaga is so good.
It looks like they are trying to throw the game with all the stupid passes that end up as TO’s.
Wiese is a total spaz today.
They are standing on D .
It looked to me like Hamblin was looking to toss the ball back out when all she had to do was turn around and shoot a six foot shot!
The announcers are good, pointing out all the 50/50 balls (OSU losing most of them).
This defense is awful. No energy, and leaving so many shots uncontested.
No kidding.
Zags getting all loose balls.
I don’t get this game. OSU isn’t hustling on defense at all. Does anybody know if they’re above .500 from the line? And Hamblin has been on the bench for a LONG time right now.
Bummer. I thought this was a final four team.
They looked that way a month ago. Something changed…relied too much on standing around waiting for 3s, I think. D was not as intense, either. I think they thought they were better than they were…
this team needs to work on upper body strength; hands, arms; they were consistently outmuscled, especially by Tinkle’s kid
Agree. When they went down to Tempe and beat ASU, I thought they might be a Final Four team. But I think that was their high water mark. The last ten games of the season they felt like a team that was going to be one-and-done though. I did have some hope they’d make it to Spokane as playing at home would cover the teams weakness. What is it with Beaver basketball teams and blowing easy layups?!?
It’s definitely a lost art as far as the Beavs are concerned. I seem to remember Jack sputtering some last year saying (paraphrasing) it is the 2nd easiest shot – the first being a free throw. Jared Cunningham (now with the Idaho Stampede) was terrific at that.
Gabby…………………
Like I said, cute but shoots like hell. Epic miss on a layup.
That is a brutal loss.
This is a tough one to stomach right now. Gonzaga truly wanted this game more than we did and that’s why they’re coming away with this one. They outplayed us in both halves. Agree 100%. Simply out hustled .
Well, go Wisconsin!
Wonder who the minus 1 was from hehe
Beavs seemed to have an attitude of “we will figure it out at the end” or “weise will bail us out with 3s at the end”…I hate teams when teams develop that mindset. They got open shots and most of the Beav’s were contested.
So what now?
Baseball team is playing well, Football in a break..see you guys in a week?
Five games being streamed before Casey’s guys return to league play at UCLA April 2. Could use a thread for the out of league play.
Every team that has played in your face defense has beaten them this season. Now have lost the last 3 of 5 games.
Maybe they got to the point where they thought they didn’t have to PLAY any more and could still win and began coasting.
Bingo.
Deven Hunter seems to ALWAYS bring a competitive, total game effort. Maybe Scott should lock her in a cage match with Ruth. Ruth is just too sweet and needs to toughen up.

concur on next year’s team. Gibson graduates but the core is back and wasn’t there’s that 5-star recruit coming in.
Ruth sat out because she was getting pushed around underneath, and demonstrably so.
This team will potentially be better next year, since it will be a senior heavy squad. It’s not a given though. But really they f-d up a golden opportunity this season with the 3 seed and having home court advantage. How many times is that going to happen?

Moving ahead so life won’t pass him by?
Jim Croce’s got a name…….well played.
Had a name.
Leroy Brown approves of this thread.
ain’t he still workin’ at the car wash, tryin’ to pay off that non-support judgement?
I heard he’s a gambler, and he likes his fancy clothes.
Nope, he is spending his time in a bottle.
tuggin’ on Superman’s cape…
He’s stuck in ol Lodi again…
How could anyone be a Beaver fan and give a negative to the idea of Joe Young leaving the P-12? You want him back for another year???
Womens coach Scott to at Baylor ; Craig Robinson rehired with transition pay; OSU Beavers comments and commentary ; John Canzano article
Yeah, how offensive. He should have been thrown out on his ear.
And which was it again, that the CBI tourney was too tough to handle, or was it just beneath the dignity of what the beaver accomplished this season?
AAAWWWE MF YYYYEEEAAAHHHH!!! DOOOD WIT BDAT PERF GAME DOE

Next to the Lady Beavs.
softball wins Stanford series – go for a sweep 2day.
The fish rag douche canoe says RB Malik Staples is close to committing. Nice offer sheet:

Gotta pay for Andersen and the new coaches somehow.
They had always been free and still hardly anyone attended them.
I never attended in the past, because it never sounded interesting (no linemen, no tackling etc) . This year, I’m actually considering making the trip down there with my kid to go watch it (if the weather is good).
You get what you pay for.
