  1. To be honest the player I am most excited to see tonight is Eubanks… I think he can become a special player… I know people are saying he gets pushed around because he’s weak…. I don’t think that’s the case, I think they are able to get leverage on him… Once he figures out how to use his body he is gonna be a force!

      • I’ve saw a few posts saying he was getting moved around in the post so he needs to strengthen up… IMO he looks plenty strong… He has been playing shorter opponents which gives them leverage… He is legit, I can see him being the anchor down there… Hopefully Tinkle will keep him in the starting lineup when the other guys get back

        • I haven’t seen any comments like that, but if it’s just a few posts it’s not majority opinion. I think we mostly agree here that he looks awesome.

What I see is fluidness, agility, soft hands, and a good finisher. Those are awesome traits from the C. Reminds me of guys that Gonzaga, St. Mary’s, and Butler would always get and leave me scratching my head why a guy would play in those conferences instead of the Pac-12. Nice to finally get one of those guys.

          • Spot on Angry! It sure is nice to have an athletic post player who is good size… The beavs have had either plodders or under-sized big men… Moreland was good but Eubanks is much more well rounded player… Gonna be a fun season to watch!

          • And any deficiencies are things that can be easily improved or tightened up as time moves along. Positioning, boxing out cleanly, post moves (although he already has a baby hook), passing out of the post, on the ball defense, screen and roll action, controlling the aggression when going for the block (because he sometimes looks silly going up and gives up the rebound). And he’s playing for probably the best coach for those skills. Tinkle and Rupp are going to groom him into a draft pick.

I don’t think strength/size is going to be a huge issue, or at least not as bad as people think it is. Willie Cauley Stein (a good analogy for Eubanks’ potential) and Bobby Portis weren’t huge and they were consensus All Americans. Kelly Olynyk and Mason Plumlee weren’t that strong either. Again, NBA draft picks and consensus All Americans.

          • Eubanks looks big to me, and I haven’t seen him getting pushed around, so not sure why he’s viewed as weak. I thought he looked the best of all the freshman the first 2 games. That can change, but I’d be more concerned about Thompson shooting what seems like every time he gets the ball (if he makes them, cool, I guess?). But if he doesn’t there will be some backlash there. It would be nice to see him play more in the flow of offense and shot when he’s open off a pass instead of trying to create shots just for the sake of shooting. Tres Tinkle looked pretty refined and heady and plays in the offense better than Thompson.

Thompson does have a sweet stroke, but he needs to be more a team player.

I think that’s a better topic and observation than picking on Eubanks’ size or strength… at this point at least. Maybe things get exposed and that changes vs better competition.

    • No one has been saying he’s being pushed around because he’s weak. He was getting pushed around down low in the last game. He needs to bulk up some to avoid that. Has nothing to do with being weak.

  2. Iona always has a solid program, so I’m pretty stoked about this game. The freshman jitters should be mostly gone (probably will arise again in the first Pac game), so let’s see if the team settles in and takes a business like approach. That’s what we want. None of this street ball stuff, but a methodical and business like approach. I’d like to see crisp play tonight…cut down on TOs, make the extra pass to get a guy open instead of streetball/me first attitude, etc. That might take a few games to iron out but hoping to see it ahead of schedule tonight.

      • Valpo rolled them by 25. Granted it was the first game. I am expecting to see improved play from opening tip tonight. Especially defensive rebounding. NWC had 12 offensive rebounds. Which is too many to an NAIA school. Too many guys were going for the block instead of getting their ass in front of someone and boxing out. Defense, rebounding and FT shooting. Do that and everything else will take care of itself tonight. Getting ready to head out the door for Gill. Go Beavs!

  3. Firstly, who said Eubanks was weak ever? 6 10 250 isn’t exactly small by any means… And he’s uber athletic. Must happens for us to get this win: out rebound them, can’t give up offensive boards. Need to play a zone too honestly, we aren’t good enough to guard man to man. Also we HAVE TO knock down 3’s and free throws. If we can shoot 35-40% from 3 as a team and make 65-70% from the stripe I think we’ll blow them out by 20. Let’s go beavs!

  4. What is surprising to me is our lack of outside shooting….I thought the new guys were going to add firepower….but not yet.. And freethrow shooting ??? what the hell…. kinda basic.

    GO BEAVS!!

  5. Anybody know if Eubanks is going to play any baseball? Supposed to be a pretty talented pitcher too. Would love to see him towering on the mound

  6. Speaking of football recruiting and Moustapha Toure’s hudl video……

Does anyone know what the level of competition is that Horizon Christian High School in Tualatin plays against?

Talk about a man amongst boys!

On several occasions he not only knocked down the kid he was blocking, but he also knocked down one or two defenders who were beside his man.

    • Maybe it’s an optical illusion, but even when he gets fouled a lot of those layups look so makeable on TV. What is it with him? He would probably average 15 points a game is he could make layups.

  7. Good first half. Need to keep up the defense. Iona is going to make a run. They’ll keep pushing the pace. We’ll see how the defense handles it.

    • He moves so fluidly, like he’s 6’5 or something. He also looks like he’s got about a 36″ vertical. I’m looking forward to a few years of him running the floor. Please, someone teach him the sky-hook: the most under utilized offensive weapon in basketball.

  8. I think this team will make the NCAA.
We’ll see how they are in conference and on the road, but based on what I see this is a tourney team.

  9. Hopefully after the road trip Gill starts filling up.

This trip should be interesting test. Rice and UCSB. That’s a tough trip due to the miles and then getting SB on the end of it. Might lose that one.

    Kansas game should be interesting.

    • it is going to be hard in Dec as there are not a lot of Sat games so folks that don’t live in Corvallis are going to be hard press to make it their

  10. Considering that most of my favorite players in the NBA are PFs and Centers, I absolutely love that Drew Eubanks is emerging as such a focal point of this team. His athleticism is simply insane.

  11. Eubanks is so fluid for his size, it’s kind of shocking to the senses considering what the Beavs have had in prior years and screw missing layups, he just dunks the damn thing.

  12. Wow. We just showed out against a good squad!! Held one of the best offensive players in college ball to 4-17! We’re show time when we get out and run.. A lot of bang outs and a lot of posters! Going to be a great year! Freshman can BALL too!!

  13. This team is so well balanced in all the important areas and they’re only going to improve. Already some really great chemistry between GPII and STjr

  14. Definitely making plans to attend the Far West Classic. We are playing Tulsa right who beat Top 10 Wichita St? 8500 tickets already sold. Capacity something like 10,400. Don’t be surprised if OSU brings close to 10K. What a great return of the Classic. If it goes really well they want to expand to 8 teams and into a true tournament with a champion.

  15. Back from the game…………………

Beavs seemed a little tentative at first but from the point where they trailed 23-22 in the first half until they led 71-49 it was all systems go. Some great basketball was played during that stretch and we enjoyed it. LMW came to play tonight! GP2 was his usual self and Eubanks was just a freaking stud around the hoop. 3 pt shooting was much better and FT’s as well. There were some lapses in there but overall a better effort than Saturday. I will say this much about Iona. That team is a one trick pony. Most of the players on their team looked like sticks. All they do is pass around the perimeter or drive and kick to shoot the 3. There was one play in the 2nd half where a player drove to the basket but was shut off, kicked to a shooter in the corner and they whipped it all the way back around to the other corner for a wide open 3 on about 4 passes that was nothing but net. Textbook ball rotation. I’d say the refs were atrocious but I’ll withhold judgment as I think that is due to the new rules but will have to research and verify. All in all it was great to be back at Gill and watching some good basketball again. The future is looking bright beav fans!

  16. I knew Eubanks was athletic, a quick jumper, all of those things, but I never thought he’d be getting so many dunks against legitimate D1 competition. That was 5 this game. We might need a dunk counter for that kid. He and GPII really do rock the rim. They make this team really fun to watch. I hope it translates against better competition obviously. They gotta get to Houston on Thursday night and take care of business.

    • The poise displayed by Bruce is the biggest positive of the game to me. The fact that Tinkle had the balls to play the more talented freshman over the experienced guy (Duvivier) is a great coaching move that a lot of coaches wouldn’t have done. Bruce is gonna be very important later on this year in conference play. Feels weird to watch a coach and team do everything you’d expect them to and walk away from a game without any complaints really but I definitely could get used to it

  17. Post-game thoughts,

Good game by pretty much everyone. The team’s success will depend on the seniors. They’ll provide the steady hand for when the freshman get into funds.

Eubanks looked good. Curious to see how he handles a big physical center on defense. Reminds me of Cunningham in his freshman year in that he’s physically talented but can border on recklessness. But with a much better supporting cast, Eubanks should have a better year.

Thompson is what I thought, very smooth but can get lost on defense. Doesn’t look like he was asked to do a whole lot on defense in high school.

Tinkle is a glue guy. Always finding the ball, making a hustle play that gets an extra possession.

Bruce is showing he’s got a good handle but still has a ways to go on the offensive end.

The seniors played well. When Iona made their run it was the seniors who responded.

Now well see how the team responds to opponents runs on the road when they don’t have the crowd behind them.

    • The seniors played well with the exception of Olaf. I kept watching him hoping to see something positive. He had one good backdoor pass from the high post, but other than that he looked like the player who least belonged on the court last night.

      • Olaf’s defense has been pretty disappointing. The only thing he can do ok is hedge at the top of the 3 point line. I expect his minutes to significantly decrease once Gomis and Reid are back. If Thompson and LMW can be consistent from beyond the 3 point line, it reduces Olaf’s offensive value.

Olaf should only see about 15-20 min a game.

        • Olaf is terrible. 15-20 a game is gonna cost us if that’s truly how much he plays. He’ll really be exposed when we play teams that have a PF that can pummel him down low. They got away with him against Iona because they had no bigs to speak of but a real D1 PF is going to kill him. And I’m sick and tired of being told he can shoot. He’s been living off his brother’s reputation as a point forward that can shoot when really he’s just been a tall awkward guy with a slow release since the day he showed up and hasn’t improved at all. Its concerning that Tinkle talks him up so much but was nice to see him sit Olaf when the game got a little serious in the second half. Rakorcevic looked better in his limited minutes imo

          • First, Olaf is not a power forward. He’s being put at PF because Gomis and Reid are out. When they come back, he’ll be in the rotation with LMW and Tres for the 3rd guard or SF spot.

He likely won’t be asked to defend the post when those guys are back.

          • So he’ll defend wings??? If you think he’s gonna be better once he starts guarding 6’4″-6’6″ players then you are certifiably insane.

      • Not that I am 100% behind Olaf. The rebound he tipped to a teammate for an offensive rebound was very smart and unselfish. For the last 75% of the game I thought his defense was good as he was smart about spacing and using his length. He is a liability when being posted up, but that obviously was not an issue this game. He shot okay this game and had 4 assists. Not too bad. My thought is if we want to complain about his playing we might want to choose a game where he obviously played poorly.

  18. OT; Eggers on UW @ OSU:

I didn’t realize UW had such defensive numbers, pretty good, especially considering the teams they’ve faced (USC, UO, ASU):

“Though they lost three defensive starters to the NFL off of last year’s team, the Huskies lead the Pac-12 in scoring defense (19.6) and rank second in total defense (362.3). Offensively, it’s a different story. Washington ranks 11th in scoring offense (25.7), first downs (18.4), third-down conversions (35.2 percent) and total offense (373.5) — just ahead of Oregon State in all categories.

I also didn’t realize Scott and Strong were out for the year. Williams return would be welcome and like seeing him getting more game time experience:

“The best cornerback, senior Larry Scott (ankle), and the best safety, Justin Strong (concussion), are lost for the season. Cornerback Dwayne Williams (concussion) could return, and if he does, he’ll start alongside Treston Decoud, who returned against Cal after missing two games with a concussion. If Williams can’t go, converted receiver Kendall Hill will start at corner.”

Looks like a poor match up if UW ‘s defense is good. UW D can focus on the run obviously, and OSU D will have to play for 4 quarters against a weak offense to make it competitive.

A toothless Beaver and a toothless Husky gumming at each other for 3.5 hours….

  19. What’s most exciting to me is that this team will be able to get into shootouts with teams this year and keep up. We don’t have to just be a slow-tempo, defense first team.

    • From Oregonlive (Oct 27):

“…Returning starter Daniel Gomis broke a bone in his left hand Monday, putting him out for six to eight weeks. His injury knocked the Beavers down to 11 available players, not far from where they were one year ago.

Senior forward Jarmal Reid is out for multiple weeks with a stress fracture in his right foot, junior center Cheikh N’diaye is working to return from a shoulder injury and freshman guard Kendal Manuel is out for multiple months with a broken leg. Tinkle also listed Daine Muller, a walk-on who joined the team in September, as day-to-day….”

      http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2015/10/array_of_injuries_disrupts_ore.html

        • Having 11 experienced and/or skilled players is nothing like having 8 benchers and six walk-ons. At least you can have a practice with 11 players.

      • 6 weeks puts us at Dec 7th for Gomis and multiple weeks, I’m hoping, is less than Gomis for Reid so maybe we see him next week? I would think Gomis could at least do cardio whereas that’s my main concern for Reid as he can’t do much on that foot. With that being said, maybe Reid being a bench guy good for 20-25 minutes due to his medical condition, conditioning won’t be as much of a factor.

      • However, Tinkle gave Olaf credit in the post-game presser – saying how he facilitates and directs on the floor – although he scored only 5 points.

        • I too was upset with Olaf’s play for the first 5-10 minutes. He was missing shots that he should make and wasn’t battling very well. Then he had a good, smart hustle play where he tipped a rebound to his teammate and started making some shots and playing tougher. I thought his game ended up relatively good. So hopefully this means he starts playing better.

  20. Preach it, Coaches Hot Seat:

“Several Coaches Hot Seat members were in the Willamette Valley on the weekend of November 1 and 2 of last year for the Stanford at Oregon game in Eugene and the California at Oregon State game in Corvallis and we talked to over a dozen people around then Mike Riley’s OSU football program and we left Corvallis with the firm conviction that…

Oregon State football was DEAD under Mike Riley and in DEEP trouble

….and of course like most people after seeing the state of the Beavers program last year up-close and seeing its decline over the past few years we were STUNNED when Nebraska hired Mike Riley since it’s out opinion here at Coaches Hot Seat that…

Mike Riley QUIT working hard at Oregon State several years ago

….which brings us to Gary Andersen now the head coach at Oregon State who inherited in our opinion a Helluva mess that is now being played out in the 2015 season….”

I recommend reading the whole thing: http://www.coacheshotseat.com

    • HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD. GA has a tougher road to plow then Dickerson did though as Riley was building it up when he left the first time and not tearing it down like he left it the last time he left. On top of that we have 50 plus freshman and now 16 injured players. Yep, sucks to be GA right now. But he is a stubborn SOB so he’ll pull it out. I just wouldn’t compare it at all to Dickerson’s reign… totally different scenario.

    • From your lips to Ken Goe’s ears! I am hoping his crush on MR fades over time and distance (not to mention overwhelming evidence that he is a crappy coach).

  21. Anyone see that Les Miles may be coaching for his job the last 2 games. You got to be kidding me. I think there are about 50 of the power 60 teams that would straight up fire their coach if Miles would coach there.

    • I can’t believe he is a head coach anywhere. Seems dumb as a box of rocks. And talk about throwing your players under the bus, that guy does it like no other. They had 5 losses last year. With the local talent and tradition they have, their floor should be 10 wins per season.

      • He’s not as dumb as you say but I can understand why people aren’t happy with him. The kind of talent they recruit is too good for their offense to suck every year. Even this year they’d be hopeless if not for Fournette.

  22. An Oregonlive story about Jonathan Smith:

“…”He doesn’t go back to his high school reunions, or have any desire to, but he loves to go to Corvallis,” Robin Smith said. “He’s grateful for the education he got, the players he played with from all different walks of life and all parts of the country, and the people he met.”…”

    http://www.oregonlive.com/collegefootball/index.ssf/2015/11/washington_offensive_coordinat.html#incart_river_index

I’m still hoping that someday he turns out to be the kind of coach we’d want at OSU and he wants to coach there.

    More seasoning required before then.

  23. This trip to Rice is tough. Looks like they were at the airport at 7am today after that late game. Then they have to play tomorrow. Could be some issues their and would not be surprised if they’re sluggish.

    • Nice thing we actually have some depth this year. Rice recently lost their two best players so we may come out sluggish but we’ll round into form and take this one. I’m with you in that the UCSB game worries me. 2pm start and I didn’t see any flights out late on Thursday out of Houston so they’ll fly out Friday. Let’s hope those young legs bounce back!

    • I think the announcers said that Rice’s leading scorer is out with a meniscus injury. So there’s that, plus Rice just isn’t very good (usually). I’d be more worried about UCSB but even their best player from a year ago is gone so they’re rebuilding as well. I think it’s fair to expect 2 wins. These are games you can’t drop if you’re returning the experience we are, especially when you’re trying to make the tourney

  24. Some interesting JC news for the football team. I especially liked this tidbit from an Oregonlive story

Jonathan Kongbo, nation’s top JC prospect, visiting Oregon State Beavers this weekend

    http://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/index.ssf/2015/11/jonathan_kongbo_nations_top_jc.html#incart_story_package

“…The 6-foot-6, 265-pound defensive end, out of Arizona Western College, was scheduled to visit Auburn this weekend, but changed plans in order to get a better feel for Corvallis.

Kongbo holds offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Louisville, Mississippi State, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Washington and others….”

A player putting off his visit to Auburn in order to go visit a school that doesn’t even have an airport. Am I dreaming?

Now if they can pick up a JC DT or two………

  25. Same problem with empty seat TV image @ bb games. My brother watched the game last night and commented – trying to be nice – “maybe it’s just the scan.” One would think/hope that with all the new, bright young things staff in the the AD someone would take the initiative. It’s such a no-brainer to solve.

      • The student section is on the same side as the camera and below it, so you can only see the very top part of the student section on screen.

I was sitting above the student section and that whole side appeared more full from my vantage point than the side shown on TV.

I’d say that over all it was 1/3 full, maybe 40%, but it was a weekday, so there’s that to consider as well.

    • OSU needs to fave the camera towards the student section like most of the top programs. Unless its a weekend game there arent many people that can actually make the drive during the week for the tip.

      • First thing they need to do is get the student section to have better cheers. They had some terrible ones last night. My advice for cheering is to be creative, original and funny but not overtly mean to the other team. Friendly trash talk.

I think they were just chanting AJ sucks last night. That was terrible.

          • Besides showing “no class”..it’s really off since the opposing team usually wins, so what does that mean for the players that the Beavs are trotting out there?

Now when I coached that really meant something. I was afraid for the very lives of some of my “starters.” JB

  26. Speaking of seating, i’ve seen talk of the upcoming groundbreaking of the VtV project is supposed to start immediately after the season’s final home game this weekend. Couldnt they just move the 30 or so people who would be sitting in the endzone Saturday to another section and get started early? Technically, they didn’t need those seats all year and they could have started a year early.

  27. My headline: Rockets fire Gopher and replace him with BeaverGopher.

Kevin McHale Fired by Rockets, J.B. Bickerstaff to Replace as …
    Bleacher Report › articles › 2590615-kev…
6 hours ago – “The team was not responding to Kevin McHale,” Rockets general manager Daryl Morey told reporters …

      • I think as a preferred walk-on we could see one, but not another scholarship qb for the 2016 class, unless something crazy happens like Rich Rod leaving. That could make things interesting at multiple positions.

  28. Also isn’t our commit numbers at 19? I saw on scout it was 16 and ranked us 55 then rivals had us at 20 and ranked 29th. I was just curious to know what our actual ranking is.

    • Rivals does their ranking on volume not quality. Under their methodology a class of 25 two and three stars would beat a class of 10 five stars.

ESPN does it better since they grade on overall quality of the class regardless of numbers.

  29. Well, my first SMH moment here; Gina reports that Drew Clarkson is out for Saturday, with “an undisclosed injury”. Very disappointing!!

She adds that VV has taken some practice snaps as “the emergency QB option”.

    • I was doing a little research and on the Rice Basketball schedule it is showing “TV”. I know some of these CUSA games show up on the “American Sports Network” and sometimes streams are available.

        • Just so we are clear, I was not the one to ball kick your comment. I did some digging to and I think there will be a stream on Rice’s website.

          • No, I never thought it was you. Sorry for any confusion. There has been an asshole who gives any comment I make a minus for the last few weeks (not sure what psycho would take the time to find my posts and minus all of them?). I thought it was funny that he would minus a post just trying to give some info. He won’t show himself or respond to why he thinks my comments are wrong.

  30. In light of guard Sabrina Ionescu announcing that she won’t be signing a LOI until next spring and the announcement that guard Mikayla Pivec has signed a letter of intent to play for the Beavs…..

Is there anyone out there who can venture a guess as to what this means w.r.t. OSU and Ms. Ionescu?

    TIA

    • I was wondering that myself. Pivec is a 5* ranked 24th overall, Ionescu is a 5* ranked 4th overall. I don’t think we can go wrong with either, but both would be nice.

    • I don’t have any inside knowledge whatsoever and have just formed opinions based on tweets, posts, and articles but for what that’s worth, I don’t think Pivec signing with OSU hurts our chances with Ionescu. There will always be a need for multiple ballhandlers in Rueck’s offense and from the looks of things, we’re definitely becoming more athletic with the girls we’re bringing in.

If anything, she may want to play with the best and that’s what this last recruiting class is. With that being said, UofO is bringing in a solid, solid class as well.

She has an AAU teammate, Mallory McGwire, going to UofO just like we have one, Tudor, coming to OSU. Hoping the staff made a solid connection on her trip up to keep her interested for the year. Overcoming her twin at UofO may be too much to ask but then again, who thought we’d be bringing in top 15 classes for women’s hoops 5 years ago?

      • Damn, Rueck needs to write a book. It is starting to look like he has been able to take a complete cluster fuck and start a perennial powerhouse in just five years. First, I hope he stays at OSU and second I hope GA can do the same thing.

        • About the only thing that looks a little weak about the roster is, height wise, he only has 1 true center.

Other than that wow, what a job he and his staff have done re recruiting (and coaching).
