  1. ESPN Projection (over 10,000 simulations!) says Beavs 73-68.

Homefry Projection (over one cup of coffee!) says Wazzu 67-60-think scoring might be lower due to early start, new arena, empty stands…I really hope I’m wrong.

  2. I’m not feeling it today for the Beavs. Of course, I’m currently waiting to see the dentist right now so maybe that’s skewing my judgment

  3. On the womens side, they drew a 7:15 game against Wazzu. They’ve played in streaks this year. They were 2-5 to start league play, won six then finished off 1-4. It’s tough to guess how they’ll show this weekend. And it’s more of an uphill battle for them with Stanford being the class of the field. But they do draw the best scenario for themselves with Wazzu, USC and likely Cal for the semis. They should be able to win two games and give themselves a shot to make the finals.

First, there’s this for anyone interested in streaming games which are not televised (men or women):

Second, league honors were announced. Except for Scotty getting the coach of the year, league honors pretty much mirror the media honors. Congrats to Earlysia, Ali and Patricia.

  4. im excited to watch this game. its a great opportunity for this team to get an 18th win. i read that moreland’s gonna check motum. to me that’s the key. if he doesn’t have a big game the cougars probably aren’t good enough to win. it’d be nice if starks could go on a spurt like the one he had saturday too. shit, this math class in going to take forever now..

    • The good news: That means we’ll be playing man.
The bad news: Moreland is our weakest off-ball defender, and Motum makes his money off-ball. Still, Moreland has shown good recovery and help side. And his rebounding has always been there.

Look for Berto and Burton to put in gut check games today. SoCal boys seem to do well when they go home.

  5. Who cares about the mens BB tonight. We won’t make The Tourny even with a win tonight, we don’t deserve an NIT due to preseason schedule and results in a terrible Pac 12, and the CBI is not an invitational but a who’s willing to play. I hope we get pasted, so Robinson is really on the hot seat. He was a “nice” hire when nobody else wanted the job, but he will never get us to the Tourny. He has been here four years. Payne got five and John got six and we can all agree both of those were too long. CR is not better than them.

      • I don’t hate Riley, I would like to see some changes, but I think we are going in the right direction. Riley will get us to a Holiday, Alamo, or Rose before CR earns a Tourny birth. Riley will win the North before CR wins the Pac 12.

        • how hypocritical is it to say robinson should be fired but the football team is headed in the right direction? it would seem to me that those are two contradicting statements

          • Their RPI is 147th, the Robinson ERA ooc schedule is cupcakes and they were ninth in the Pac 12 which was it’s worst in like forever.

Riley is suffering from bad recruiting 4-5 years ago but will goto a bowl this year. Not a great bowl but a bowl. And Jack don’t start the CBI is better than a Vegas Bowl Bullshit again.

          • Sorry, but thats ludicrous. Robinson takes a team that didnt win a single conference game and today has them at 18-13. Riley takes a losing program and today….has it losing just like before he took over.

Riley didnt suffer from bad recruiting, he COMMTTED bad recruiting. You talk like it done by some outsource company. LOL.

As to what either will do in the future, it is nonsense to SAY what either will do, but Robinson is making positive progress, while Riley is declining. You got no case.

          • You think the Vegas Bowl is all that?

You got a screw loose dude.

I like that our teams get to play post season games. I like our teams just because they’re our teams. I’m not the one who’s inconsistent here. You hate one who is equal to another comparing apples to apples.

Actually, Riley took a good program which was winning and had new facilities and turned it into a decent program which has better facilities. Robinson took one of the worst programs in the history of the NCAA and has it in a decent place now. I’m not saying he’s great or doesn’t need to improve. And I won’t say any better of Riley.

I know that they’re pretty much the same right now. Except Riley doesn’t quite speak as bluntly as Coach Rob does.

I’m willing to forgive a losing season here and there. Bowls don’t excite me too much unless they’re a good bowl. But I’ll still watch and root for my teams.

We have alums coming to games once again after years of getting shunned. Maybe Bobby D is the culprit. Maybe there have been three other AD’s and three other coaches who fostered the same mentality. If that’s the case, then the one variable who has not been there should be the one to get the credit.

So… your double standard… you defend it. It’s not incumbent upon me to defend it for you. It’s just ridiculous on the face of it.

        • RIIIIIGHT!

Just admit that you hate Riley for his nine years of futility.

Or… admit that you carry a double standard.

There really is no other rationale.

          • I give both Riley and Robinson one more year. If progress is not made in football or basketball then it is time to clean house.

          • That means one year of non futility since 1964, same for hoops useing your logic. Do only BCS teams have success each year. You do understand upper bowls are politics, money, prestige, TV viewers and who travels right. Do you really think Michigan deserved their bowl this year. Boise will always get snubed.

Acctually I think De careless is the biggest problem we have.

          • You are right, DeCorliss is a huge problem. But if Riley does not get us to a Bowl game this year he should go. If Robison does not get us to at least the NIT next year with the talent he has he shoud go to. DeCorliss should go yesterday. Our expectations should be nothing less than to be the premier athletic program in the state and right now we are getting our asses kicked. Something must change or we will continue to fall behind.

          • What you say is nuts. THIS year Robinson has a winning record. You are saying that if Riley has a barely winning record, and gets us to a low tier bowl, he is fine???? But Robinson having a winning record, gets him fired?

Glad you arent the AD. DeCaroliss is head and shoulders above you. (and I dont much like him)

          • It’s not my rules, and it’s not my logic. But yes, that means one year of non-futility since 1964. And if we want to extend to second tier bowls/tourneys, then that remains the same. And hoops gets one year since 1990… with that year being very much like this season is now.

            it’s your “logic.”

Go ahead and dig some more.

  6. Beautiful spring morning!
The Dow is rebounding from yesterday.
    Reclaimed the yard from winter.
Still time to wash the car.
Cleared the afternoon of any and all obligations.
Wife going out to lunch and shopping with a girlfriend. What could wreck this day? JB

  7. I think OSU will win this game but I doubt by more than 8 points and with a fair amount of back and forth. Moreland needs to outman Brock Motum and bother him like a gadfly. This is a game the Beavers need to make a statement in that they are ready to build the Oregon St. brand. OSU has a chance at the NIT should we be able to repeat a win against Washington. We have to show the conference we want it.

    Pac-12 Tourney Time!
    http://beaverbyte.com

    • Yeah, 79 is probably too high. A game in the 60s is more likely if WSU is successful in forcing the Beavs into a half court game. For whatever reason I think the Beavs erupt in this one. I’m setting myself up to look like an idiot, but that’s fine. My gut feeling is so strong gotta put it in print and eat crow later if necessary.

I did wake up in time for the game! Don’t have cable, but I just remembered the weight room in my apartment complex does. Going to go over there and catch the game.

  8. I must admit: worried about Moreland on Motum. Could get eaten alive. Moreland doesn’t have control of his body and is easily duped/gets his feet in poor position. This leads to second change rebounds/dunks, etc. Collier is the play there. CR is making a mistake and going with Moreland, probably based on athleticism and height. Wrong move, though. Motum’s defender needs good footwork. Heck, I’d rather see Cunningham on him than Moreland.

    • I would like to see them mix it up on him, keep WSU guessing a bit. I could see some box-1, M2M with fresh guys – I could even see McShane on him for SHORT stints to apply energy.

      • i could see a box and 1 working well, im trying to think of a time i remember seeing robinson use one and i can’t really think of one.. maybe when tajuan porter was at oregon?

  9. I think a big key is containing Motum but I think he will get his points for the most part, the big key is making sure the role players like Lodwick, Lacy, Shelton, and Capers don’t have big games. If they keep the role players in check they will win this game. Shelton really burned the Beavers last time, they need to keep him off the boards. As long as the Beavers play solid defense and rebound the basketball they’ll win. They can score WSU without a doubt. I REALLY hope Craig doesn’t go with the 1-3-1 today. M2M has been working well, no need to mess around with other defenses.

    • It’s been nice watching the last two games and not seeing the opponent’s with wide open 3 after wide open 3. Another nice benefit of the M2M is that the Beavers have been in much better position to grab the defensive rebounds.

  10. I would think Collier would be a better matchup on Motum. Also if Burton and or Brandt aren’t going to play much might as well bring them in for short stints and tell them to play physical and levy some playoff type fouls.

  11. Challe needs to get pulled immediately. He’s a liability offensively. He’s not even looking for his shot and the one time he did he missed an easy lay-up. Much rather have Starks in there.

  12. I mean really, over 10 seconds let in the half, he’s really well defended, instead of getting the ball to Starks or Cunningham he tries a basically flip shot at the rim and tries to rebound it. That is a stupid decision. Moreland has been making a lot of bad decisions this season. Gets frustrating. Playing poor on defense and doing nothing on offense. That’s fun.

  13. Where was the rest of our team on that last possession? This team plays poor defense, they’re often lazy, they make terrible passes and the turquoise shoes need to go.

I’m always frustrated watching the Beavs regardless of the sport. I wonder if that is universal or unique to the Oregon St experience.

    • With how things are going, I would like to see a lot more Joe Burton, Devon Collier and Angus Brandt than Moreland on the floor. Moreland looks really bad today. Nelson, Barton, and Moreland have made some really bad decisions and haven’t really shown up.

  14. We’ll also see if Coach Rob talks to Harris and Hicks about those moving screens. I think he bites his tongue since they’ve been pretty equal in terms of letting it go. They’ve been a little too free IMO, but they’ve swallowed their whistles both ways for the most part.

  15. This feels like a game that the Cougars build a big lead in the second half and the Beavers have to play catch up and fall short. Feels like that’s how it will go. I hope I’m wrong.

    • The first was okay… the second was a walk. If they’re not going to call the walk by Motum in the first half, then that’s not going to be called.

  16. Staples is virtually empty with maybe 100 fans for each team and maybe another couple hundred others. They need to rotate the tourney between Portland, Seattle, San Fran, and Phoenix. Nobody in LA cares about college basketball except UCLA and this year even they are not getting attention.
There would be 1000s of fans at this game if it were in Portland.
Meanwhile Cunningham needs to take control after only 2 points in the first half.
This game is still very winnable.

  17. If Jared starts actually making shots the Beavers will win this one. He’s been off offensively all game. They need him to step up

        • It would be a slap in the face to the league, but nobody has really taken care of business this year… after a weak non-con showing. It comes down to who gets bids based on head to head. Are you going to tell SDSU or Nevada they have to stay home because a team they beat and has a lesser RPI needs to be in? Are you going to tell Virginia and BYU the same thing?

  18. Beaver defense has gotten a lot better in the second half. Not seeing a whole bunch of uncontested lay-ups and dunks. Beavers also all over the offensive boards. Moreland’s play in the second half has been a lot better.

  19. Jared and Angus have been pretty bad today. If they lose they deserve a lot of blame. Angus has been playing a little soft today. He’s had chances for lay-ups or dunks at the rim but he’s either not shot it or didn’t go up strong. Jared is 16 points below his average. Didn’t expect this performance. A lot of his shots haven’t been close.

  20. Did you hear the commentator say that Payton, sitting courtside, has gotten into Jared’s head. I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if CR appreciates the help… sort of like the little league dad standing behind the backstop, helping his son pitch. JB

  21. I see CR has his “boys” in there. Starks and Burton who he’s rotating with McShane.

    I feel better already. Not!

  22. A Washington State fan posting on the stream I’m watching claims that the WSU coach doesn’t even have his team practice free throws.

    • It was apparent at the half that Burton and Collier were going to be the keys to this win. They had to play physically and just wear Wazzu down.

Props to both for doing so.

      • And props to Moreland for putting that first half behind him. He wasn’t great, but he was great at a couple key moments. And he helped with some good feeds and nice follows throughout the second half.

  23. It would be sweet if USC could knock off UCLA and Arizona…Beavs can beat Washington, but they might not have much left in the tank if they get to the next round. USC would be a nice opponent there.

  24. I think Gary Payton needs to stay home. Cunningham was a wreck. Probably felt judged constantly. Hard to perform when you know The Glove is critiquing every move.

    • I cant buy that. If his individual psyche is so fragile, he should not be in sports at all. When the big wheels show up, it should be I-am-gonna-show-em time.

Great win! This team can play D, and that is the key to lots of wins. The D letdown when they got the big lead in the first half let WSU back in the game. With Starks cooled off, and Cuningham not putting up his usual points, they gutted it out. Great win.

Now to show up for Washington. That one is winnable, too!

    • @OSBeav_CoachRob
Thanks for the support BeaverNation! Also thx @NBA_Ironman and @GaryPayton_20 for showing up big for your boyz. Hope we made you all proud!

I don’t think he cares that they are there. In fact, I think he knows it will help the program. What we need to do now is get some big recruits there to watch the game.

  25. I really liked the defense the last three mintues. They could have made it close with the crappy foul shooting from the Beavs. We can thank god that Moore had such a poor shooting night. He missed a ton of wide open looks. I liked the grind out win. Shelton was a punk last game and Bone left my alma mater in pieces, so it was good to finally get the win.

  26. Gonna need a big game from Moreland and Collier to bear UW…. we need help defenders cause our perimeter D can’t keep all their wings in check.

  27. We won? I think my girlfriend comment was our secret weapon. Pissed, cause I thought it started on Thursday and didn’t set the DVR.

  28. Man…paid $5 for an app to stream the game to my iphone because we can’t stream video on our work computers..only to have my boss come in to review some change order pricing. tipped the phone down and missed the last 7 minutes!

  29. What do you guys think the Beavs need to do to get an NIT bid? Win the next 2? 20 wins might do it. Right now I don’t see them even listed as a bubble team.

    • That is what I was wondering too. I would think that 20 would get us in. There are some politics involved and I think that would help OSU’s case a little.

    • I think a win against Washington would be just enough. If they were to win the next 2 they would definitely get into the NIT but wouldn’t that be a disappointment then? That would be mean they lost in the championship game.

      • I would be happy with an NIT bid. It’s tangible progress. It would be like Riley going from a Sun Bowl to an Alamo Bowl.

        • I was thinking the same thing, tangible progress. But in the case of Riley, an Alamo Bowl would be more akin to Robinson winning the Big Dance.

        • Getting a winning season is tangible progress. Playing m2m defense for the first of his seasons is tangible progress. If the season ends Thursday he made tangible progress.

Right now there is no comparison between Riley and Robinson. One is regressing, the other progressing.

  30. By the way, games like today is why Cunningham didn’t win POY. He Houdinis too often and in big spots. Think Gutierrez is going to score 4 points in his game?

    • Gutierrez has been worse in big games this year, actually. They had a chance to clinch at least a tie and grab the 1 seed in their final two games and he no showed twice and pretty much ended their at-large hopes. Didn’t score against Colorado and in the biggest game of the season scored just 8 against the Cardinal.

      • I didn’t realize he choked that badly down the stretch. Jeez.

I admit I am frustrated with Cunningham’s Houdini act. I’d rather him score 11 points every night than 20 one night and 2 the next. Between him and Moreland it was like 5 vs 3 out there.

        • that’s a bit harsh, isn’t it? there’s glaring deficiencies to moreland’s game but he did have 9 points in the second half and 11 boards for the game. they don’t win without that

          • Don’t know. Every time Moreland touches the ball I cringe. When he was dribbling on the perimeter…eeek.

He’s got some good traits, no doubt, but that guy is so raw. He also doesn’t give max effort and lollygags around half the time. I can’t figure out if it’s because he’s lazy or he doesn’t understand the game/positioning.

          • you’re right, but even with all his weaknesses to me its still fair to say that he’s one of the guys that gives them the best chance to win. tommorow for instance he’s gonna need to grab another 11 or so rebounds.

          • Robinson needs to show him film of Dennis Rodman. While he’s at it, he should show Joe Burton film of Charles Oakley. With a little more hustle and court awareness they could be the collegiate versions of those guys.

          • Really? For a freshman, he has absolutely locked down the rim this year. There is still a lot of growing pains on this team, but he’s one that looks pretty strong through the next few years. I’m hoping he can develop a 8-12 foot jumper, and for a big, he handles the ball relatively well given his experience, IMHO

        • This was the first time since the Vandy game that he didn’t have double digits. And he had better numbers than Gutierrez in all but one column I think.

    • You mean like the eight points he scored against Stanford in that loss?

Or do you mean the goose egg he layed in 32 minutes against Colorado in the previous game?

I guess those losses didn’t matter. Losing two games and the league championship to end the season is all good for the POY… who doesn’t disappear apparently.

  31. That ESPN projection which Homefry pointed out this AM was pretty darned close!
Over 10,000 simulations, huh? Anyone seen what they are sayin about Thursday?
