Recruiting Weekend

82

For those who follow the Twitter feed, this is no surprise, but the Beavs have two 4-stars coming in this weekend.

Christian Wallace and Shurod Thompson, along with some other athletes.

The idea to draw comics is ingenious. I’m not sure if this is an OSU thing, but if it is they deserve a lot of credit.

  1. Isaiah Hodgins is a 4* guy too but for 2017.

Shurod and Wallace both are being recruited at DB, so I doubt we land both. With Shurod, there’s a good chance of landing Jordan Parker too, but Wallace is probably the best prospect of the 3.

I think the comics are from Zak Bigelow although he wouldn’t take credit for the work and always says it’s a whole staff effort.

Ducks did a comic some 10 years ago, but it was an ncaa violation because they mailed it. Using digital images gets around the ncaa rules

    • Yeah that is correct they have been around for about 10 years. They are pretty sic.

I don’t think getting both Shurod or Wallace based on spots available is an issue. In this teams scheme players play multiple positions on both sides of the ball. I say let’s shoot for the stars and get both!

It is a big weekend, it will would have be huge to win last week and have some momentum with the players who will be recruiting these kids too. But this season more than most will be on the coaches they need to convince these kids it is worth coming here. But showing they are planning Freshmen also let’s these kids know that if they want playing time it is here to have, just come in and compete.

It would be a huge shot in the arm if they could get some commitments to build some MO with this class. The football on the field is going to have some tough moments it would be awesome if they could find some success with the recruiting. Many of these coach’s were brought in because they are particularly strong in recruiting this is their first big test.

      • If you haven’t checked it out, go find the Michigan football intro for this year.

They get James Earl Jones talking about how they will bow to nobody, how they are the greatest university on this earth. Meanwhile, we get to argue about whether or not AC/DC is cool for our next intro… and we get junior beaver cartoons.

Maybe sometimes it’s just a mentality.

    • I think it was a violation because they put kids in Duck unis. If they would have drawn the comics with the kids in their HS unis they would have been fine.

That, and social media has changed some rules regarding contact. It’s simply impossible to patrol all contact mediums. So the NCAA smartly let the free mediums go since all schools have equal access.

      • I just think you’re an NDSU fan. When was the last time Nikegon used their own colors? They’re not proud of who they are. They want to be someone different on a weekly basis.

And that’s my riff on you lamenting your avatar colors.

I have many more riffs. Call me.

    • Now we have to ask about the artistry of said comics. I have a closet full of comics. But now we can take pics and “comic” them up? It’s cool looking. But it doesn’t have the same rich texture a real comic has. That is why certain comics are valued more than others.

Now that we have the brilliance of creativity, we need to ask for the brilliance of content. If this is us, we need to be so far beyond everyone else that they have no chance to be us. Pedal to the metal people!

  2. It’s very likely the Poster Edges filter in Photoshop. No magic tricks. Go to Filter > Artistic > Poster Edges if you have PS.

Not a big fan of OSU Ath. Mktg. Ya sure “team effort”. They’re good at ignoring me. Massari occasionally responds to me, Elcano has a constant “talk to the hand” up for me.

    • How are you asking? Massari is not an idea guy… not a hand-shaker if he can avoid it.

Send your stuff to Maryanne. She will at least be honest with you.

      • How am I asking? In a professional manor. Yes, it varies depending on person and situation. I talked with Marianne for a few minutes a couple years ago at an OSU Startup about potential job opps in the Mktg. Dept. but of course they only ever hire students or just a teeny staff. Nikki Pruett was usually just plain cranky with me but don’t blame her because her office was as small as a closet. She’s moved on from OSU. I swear if they still house the entire mktg. dept. in that little area in the NE corner of Gill then Stansbury needs to fly back to Michigan and kick BDC butt in person.

In terms of Massari I had recently submitted a couple marketing ideas because he always says!… hey, we want to hear from our fans! bla blah…So I told him I thought the rebrand has mainly been good but how could Nike conceptualize ideas for the Beaver logo without even presenting a Beaver TAIL anywhere to be seen. So he said “I’ll send that on to Nike” whatever that means. In other words, nobody at OSU has any design awareness or over site or care for such matters. A real disconnect in marketing management. I also recommended a joint marketing venture between the Ath. Dept. and the City of Corvallis to help promote the great college town that keeps popping up at the top of research proven surveys. I’ve remarked randomly at the improved graphic marketing I’ve seen in emails…with a designer’s eye for improvements. They also sent out a fun video of 5 out of 6 of the new hoops recruits on Twitter which I thought was cool but the audio was crap…and I told them it needed to pro level audio quality.

I took about a day or so to create a computer drawn cartoon (not a photo edited and filtered cartoon like you’re seeing the marketing team do with recruits) prior to the Michigan game with the idea that it could be most of all fun for all ages. When we went to the LSU game we bought cheap LSU t-shirts that had the big LSU tiger beating up on the little Beaver dude with a funny gag phrase. You know every relevant school does stuff like that. I cc’d several in mktg., even Sitake, maybe went to their junk mail, who knows. No respondé.

Just reinforces my experience for years. OSU mktg. not ready, nor willing, nor even AWARE of what it takes for big time. That’s the main thing. They’re not even aware, nor ready to invest.

I will say, the season ticket packages with the flag included is great and the recruiting posters with the orange player is great looking and cutting edge stuff. (and… getting national attention)

        • Something is lacking. I understand the strain of OSU AD against the world. It’s not you. It’s them.

But you should be smart enough to phrase a question or couch a statement in such a way that the listener can understand your gist.

          Yes?

I know the barriers put up as secondary motions at OSU. Money is all. Now money is nothing. I appreciate their frugality. They’re like the millionaire next door. Except they don’t exactly want to keep their lawn green in a drought.

          • Ya, I want to help because I see they still need it based on the evidence and my experience but I get tired of knocking on the door and having them say or imply that we don’t need help. As any mature person or business knows the first step is understanding that you need help.

    • Heh heh… anyone know if this Lucas kid is fast or not?

      Sheesh!

I know the 10.44 is an amazing time for the 100m. But that 47.48 in the 400m? That’s speed and staying power. I respect that time more than anything he’s done. Normal people would have rubber legs and bleeding lungs at that pace.

I hope his spring training includes participating in T&F. If he’s not doing that, then we’re doing something wrong.

          • Horowitz may be buying in to that:
In speaking of Storm’s condition and “non-contact” practice this week…

“Here’s another possibility: Even though Barrs-Woods is the sixth-leading rusher in school history, perhaps the coaching staff sees more upside from Brown and Sands.”

Of course, no word on this from Schnell.

          • Yes… they has.

I think there’s more to GA’s handling of this situation than GA lets on. It’s fair to question him on this. He shrugged it off to the team doctor. That’s also fair. But something is going on with Storm’s head, and I don’t have a clue what it is.

Remember GA had a similar situation last year with Stave. He really shouldn’t talk about the specifics because of HIPPA… which is often mis-applied intentionally by certain other schools. But now we get muddy info because… well… it’s just muddy.

I think the NCAA needs an NFL-like reporting for injuries. On that level it’s also muddy. But at least there’s proper info being relayed to the media which should answer the simple questions.

          • ‘But something is going on with Storm’s head…’

            I agree.

Has GA himself specifically referred to Storm’s issue as being a knee (or other) injury? I recall Storm saying that it’s his knee, but it could be he’s using that as a cover. It’s possible that he has a chronic medical condition that flares up and prevents him from playing/practicing and he just doesn’t want it made public.

As for “Storm’s head,” with many conditions/diseases, especially with those involving the gut, debilitating symptom-onset can be triggered by mental/emotional stress.

That could also explain why he was “unavailable” in the first half at Michigan but was able to play in the second.

          • I don’t think I want to go that far. I was burned and am still being burned because of his actual head trauma. If his knee is bad, then he needs to sit. Nothing is more important than his health. Nothing.

NO THING! No excuses, no lies. Health is most important.

I really really really dislike the use of cortisone shots while also decrying PEDs. Is that not the epitome of a PED? Maybe the first shot didn’t feel good, then the shot at halftime did?

That’s bullshit still. But it’s honest bullshit.

          • Yeah. I really like Storm and agree with angry that he should be a really good coach someday.

What’s he had: like 2-3 concussions dating back to high school?

He should probably hang the cleats up and start coaching.

      • Yes, the 47.48 is a much greater indicator of speed than the 10.44. There are a lot of questionable factors that come to mind when you see a fast 100 time, but pretty hard to be that far off on 400m time like that. Having never watched him. I bet i could get him into the 10.1s in quick order i wish track coaches got paid like football coaches

        • Well… 10.44 is no slouch time. But to be able to retain that speed over four times the distance says he will run through the end zone and into the tunnel a la Bo. There will be no waning moments to his runs.

        • Well as a Junior, he ran 46.84 in 400 and 20.84 in the 200. He also long jumped 24′ 4.5″ at the state meet, but tweeked his hamstring on that jump, which was right before the 100 meter final. He “only” ran 10.66 in the final, but he was running into a headwind with a tweeked hamstring that he ultimately badly pulled with 8 meters to go, quickly slowing up into a hop. Under normal circumstances, he would have gone 10.2X, maybe 10.1X.

His senior year his times weren’t as great as we was battling football injuries in the offseason and never got into track shape, but the kid is a beast with, potentially, Olympic-type talent.

He’s also a great football player (moves, vision, balance, hands, creativity). He will ultimately be OSU’s best player as soon as the coaching staff stops being idiots and decides to give him the ball. The fact that he is not returning kicks is absurd.

          • I don’t care about football. That’s boring shit to me. Magnificence like you report is simply spectacular. I was a huge voice in wanting a certain kid named Tyner to go with T&F. He had that talent. He wasted that.

Paul has the ability to be something special. And I don’t want football to get in the way. I want him to be a champion at everything.

He has those skills. I want OSU to provide him the opportunity to appreciate them.

          • 200 time was legal.

What’s more impressive is that he only ran the 400 twice that year. His first 400 he ran in 46.86 relatively early in the year (April 17). He didn’t run the 400 again until the state meet prelims where he ran 46.90, 2 seconds ahead of the next qualifier. Paul, being an experience track athlete, knows not to go to hard in the prelims when your spot in the final is assured, so that time was “taking it easy.” Had he not gotten injured he would have likely run in the low 46s or maybe high 45s.

          • Keep up with angry at the email he provides. We are interested in being champions at every turn. Paul deserves this. We’ve had athletes decide on other schools just because they got more than a 90% ship for T&F.

And I celebrate them as much as I love the sport. Nobody celebrates 2-8. I love them. They are what makes 1.

T&F at OSU needs to be done now!

    • It sounds like Lucas was targeted as one to play early because of his abilities. But I also think we are too impatient with his involvement because he is switching positions. James came in and hit it out of the park from day one because his little brother was the RB in HS. Then his little brother came in and hit it out because he was established at that position. Lucas needs to switch positions, and he is still getting on the field. It’s only a matter of time before our QB stops locking on his first receiver or runs. Lucas (and other receivers) will get the ball and show that they can play.

  3. So Jack:

“Now we have to ask about the artistry of said comics. I have a closet full of comics. But now we can take pics and “comic” them up? It’s cool looking. But it doesn’t have the same rich texture a real comic has.”

Who are you thinking of a reference artists/inkers?

    • Depends on the genre.

      Barks was better than Rosa.

      McFarlane, Campbell and the Romitas?

      Aragones is a personal favorite.

When it comes to telling stories, Lee (Jim, not Stan) and Silvestri kill it… and Cockrum saved the day… and Madureira carried on as a soldier of the medium.

I read many every week… while listening to vinyl. I suck that way.
