Home Football Baldwin Implies Offense Clicking

Baldwin Implies Offense Clicking

192

I wrote during week 3 or so that the offense was making subtle baby steps…something about “ah ha moments” where things click, and how I could see it happening each game.

Baldwin, in this interview, implies that transition is mostly complete, and the Beavs are ready to be “explosive”.

Come Saturday, I might jump on the upset bandwagon with most of you guys. The thing preventing me at this point is (a) I don’t believe in the transitive property and/or what happened in past games has any outcome on future games (b) need to see the Beavs do it before I’m a believer.

  1. I’ve learned to never trust anybody with a coke habit. Still have this as a loss. Entertaining, but still a loss. We’ll need to find a way to plug Anu’s runs. A tall order.

  2. While the transition may not be complete in that in fully manifests itself this Saturday, I do “feel” better about this coaching staff’s ability to make meaningful growth during the bye week (i.e. Andersen has a plan to implement). To fully earn my trust in this regard (which I am sure is unimportant to them), they’d need to not only improve the offense, but importantly the special teams gaffes and hijinks.

As Angry said in a previous thread, a win this Saturday is possible, followed by a good opportunity for a few more in the ensuing weeks.

    That’d be a win streak. That’s confidence.

I’d like to see Nall get the ball at least 10 times; he and Woods could have a good day out there. And isn’t Lucas from AZ? Give the kid some touches and make a good impression on those ’16 AZ recruits at the same time.

    Go Beavs!

    • Great to see that Lucas kid get a few touches not only because he’s from AZ but because “SPEED KILLS” All for positive yards. Need to see lots more!!

  3. I think the conditions are definitely right for the ah ha moment. The Arizona d is terrible and we had a whole bye week to clean things up and put in a few new wrinkles. Also i think it was gina said they were working on pace so that could start becoming a weapon.

    • Regarding pace: I think a finesse offense has to run that. It’s the only way to wear out a D since a QB run doesn’t lay a blow on defenders. i.e. if Collins runs 10 times per game, that’s 10 blows a RB doesn’t lay on the D. So either make that up with handoffs, or run pace to wear them out. I noticed that defenses looked fresh in the 4th vs the Beavs in all four games so far. Not good.

      • I did enjoy the series where they ran Nall three times(?) in quick succession near/at the goal line… that type of pace during stretches would keep the mildcats D even more on their heels.

      • I don’t necessarily see it as a weapon to wear down the d but to keep them from making substitutions when we have them at a disadvantage.

      • Some of the out-year OLine recruits have remarked that Andersen said he wants a “power running game” and they like to hear that.

It’d be interesting to see some commitment to that in terms of RB recruiting. I know RB size is not absolutely required for a “power run game” – the OLine wearing down the D is very important – but it would still would help.

There’s Nall, Cook (medical RS?), and Haskins who have size, but Haskins doesn’t seem to have competed well with the existing roster. It’d be nice to see some RBs that are 220+ so OSU doesn’t have to rely on finesse/pace.

        • Pierce is around 200lbs as a high schooler. Same with Tisdale, if he ends up coming here.

Really too bad they couldn’t land Jordan Stevenson over the summer. Think he’s regretting his decision to commit to Riley and Langsdorf and their abandon the run offense?

Could have earned some meaningful playing time as a true freshman here

        • Yeah, more Nall please. It’s like a boxing match…hit them with some finesse runs for big yards, then when they’re getting gassed from that, run a power back at them. At that point the O could do whatever. I think that’s what they’re working toward, but we’ll see. I hope so.

          • I did not understand why they didn’t go back to Nall over and over during the Stanford game. I guess they didn’t trust him with 15-20 carries? I mean, when have you seen a Beaver team give the ball three times to a bruiser and have him punishing the defense? I’m not saying it would have changed the game dramatically, but it was working, make them stop it.

  4. Just read the Beavs will wear their black helmets this weekend. Can’t understand why you’d wear black helmets in AZ… seems like the white ones would be cooler.

  5. Arizona QB Anu Solomon will start vs. Oregon State source told @ESPN. Solomon had 18 consecutive starts until missing last week vs. Stanford

    • Is he really a game changer? I mean he’s the starter for a reason but is he going to carry thier offense on his back? I watched the UTSA game and wasn’t impressed. UTSA is beyond awful, and they hung with Arizona for most of the game, and hung 525 yads of offense on them.the best team they’ve beaten is Nevada. I’m not saying the beavs will blow them out, but I still think they can win with anu’s running the offense.

          • I’d rather beat a healthy team with their best players able to play. Otherwise there will always be an asterisk.

We’re not making the playoff this year anyways. Might as well try to beat a guy will have to beat next year too.

          • Dumb logic only wanting to beat a team when they are at full strength. A win is a win and when fan bases say you only beat them because ‘so-and-so’ was out is simply a justification on their part to make their ego feel better. Same failed logic saying you only want to beat the Ducks when their best player plays. Beavs looking to get to a bowl game; not give a damn if AZ plays with everyone or forfeits the game.

          • Said I’d “rather” beat a team at full strength so there are no excuses. Never said only want to play teams at full strength, which is unrealistic anyways because injuries happen in football all the time. “Bad logic” as it may be, in my personal life I always liked the challenge of playing against the best.

I’ve seen several people say they hope Anu can’t play, or hopefully he’s at least limited. To me it’s a loser mentality to wish people stay injured so you can beat them easier.

  6. So many good stories lately….

    http://highschoolsports.oregonlive.com/news/article/1363952022698924853/west-salem-freshman-quarterback-suspended-for-inappropriate-touching-report/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

“He wanted me to go way up there and it felt very uncomfortable,” Moore said. “I was, like, moving my hands and I touched him and he started laughing. I guess I tickled him. I wouldn’t mean to. That’s kind of weird.”

  7. It also sounded like Baldwin wants to use the tight ends more.

(this is not an anus joke)

Maybe that part of the offense, which has been noticeably absent, sees more calls this week.

      • Just read the article, pretty impressed also with Seth’s remarks about Nall:

ā€œThey threw him in there against Stanford, and he has adapted well…Heā€™s a running ball hawk for us. Itā€™s good to have him back there. Everybody on the team likes him. Heā€™s personable. Heā€™s a great dude in the locker room. Everybody enjoys his presence.ā€

You might also want to alert the local EMT’s, your doc may not be fast enough!

        • Here’s the parts I liked:

ā€œMy favorite is running back,ā€ Nall says. ā€œItā€™s the position Iā€™ve played for most of my career. Iā€™ve always been a bigger back. I like to try to use that to my advantage, to make two or three or four guys take me down instead of just one.ā€

ā€œI love that mentality, right?ā€ Andersen says. ā€œThatā€™s what you want out of a kid. He knows heā€™s a big, strong, physical back, and he is faster than he has shown. Thatā€™s because he hasnā€™t gotten out into the open field yet. Thatā€™s when heā€™ll be able to show his speed and physicality.ā€

Get him into space and the open field this Saturday…

          • I also liked the part about each player setting down with his position coach to re-set goals. Speaks to the kind of accountability which leads to positive results.

  8. Tanner Sanders is trying out for the baseball team per the Oregonian.

Quite an accomplishment if he were to make the roster. Of course that would make him a jack of all trades but master of none.

The previous article by Eggers did have a note that they only brought 36 to fall camp and intended to keep all of them. So maybe he made the team already?

  9. PHIL STEELE REPORT:

Oregon St has dominated this series of late winning 12 of the L/14 meetings.
There have been 5 outright upsets the L/9 games. Arizona is in desperation mode
as they are still searching for their 1st P12 win of the year after entering the ssn
full of hype and were ranked #16 just 2 wks ago. The Beavers enter this game
fresh off a bye following their blowout loss to Stanford as they were outgā€™d by 102
yds. The Wildcats are also off a loss to Stanford, but were outplayed by an even
larger margin, getting outgained by a substantial 256 yds! Arizona did have to
play that game without stā€™g QB Solomon however, as he was held out due to a
concussion and could return this week. My computer is calling for the Wildcats to
bounce back with a 10 pt win in a high scoring affair and Iā€™ll agree with that and
make this my High Scoring POW.

    • I buy Phi Steele’s magazine every year just to get some nice details on all the teams, but he is definitely a self promoter and good at spinning his predicitons when he’s off the mark. One thing I would say about this one is that it would be fairly difficult for a team to score 31 points with only 318 yards of offense.unless there are some turnovers or special teams scores.

      • His preseason magazine has been rated #1 in accuracy by an independent source that rates every mag every year for the past eighteen.

What I do like is he tells you up front “there is no such thing as a 100 percent guranteed lock and anyone who tells you such a thing is lying.” What he’s giving you is his best guess based on studying the game during the season and the offseason when he’s ignoring it. He also will tell you why he lost a game instead of making excuses and tracks his win totals all year, none of that “We Went 18-0 every week” stupidity.

        • Yes… according to him the Pac CG will be Nikegon v. USC. Nebraska will win the B1G West. Auburn and Louisville will be top ten if not play-off bound.

Stats and accuracy can be manipulated. Telling me why “he” lost is just excuses, because “he” didn’t lose anything.

  10. http://www.azdesertswarm.com/football/2015/10/8/9483165/arizona-football-injury-report-wildcats-decimated-neal-solomon-randall-worthy-turituri-wright

In addition to AZ official injury list, there are likely to be a number of other AZ players on the field this Saturday who are dinged up from the beatings administered the last couple of weeks by UCLA and Stanford. The Beavs, in contrast, are relatively healthy, well-rested, and well-prepared (coming off a bye week) and should be up for this game. If the Beavs can grab an early lead, I think AZ runs out of gas, and OSU holds on for an important win. Go Beavs!

      • My god I am absolutely amazed after watching that video. The structural stability of that floor and probably some good old Detroit steel in that chair to support the weight of that large, fugly woman. Must have been designed by OSU graduate structural engineers. I don’t think she has any personal knowledge of the body blow effect. Where she does have knowledge is in the body bowl effect. The body bowl effect is the amount of weight gained after consuming a few tubs of haagen dasz ice cream. That was like watching a planet with two moons orbiting

          • I’m thinking Maryland. Edsell is getting shit canned and the Under Armor guy wanted to turn them into their Oregon. Who is better to do that?

          • I think CK would fit at USC about like RichRod fit at Michigan. Doesn’t mean they wouldn’t try it anyway. He would win there it just wouldn’t look like they want it to.

          • I think Kelly made some personnel mistakes this year and may not last. He changed players without upgrading talent in my opinion; McCoy for what’s-his-name from Dallas? An inexpensive but efficient QB for an expensive QB with a bum knee? Getting rid of speed at the WR position? And none of this seemed to save the franchise any money, in fact I think they spent more without getting better.

Actually, and kind of ironically, the college team that could really use Kelly is Nebraska. They want to go back to their glory years, they want running QBs, not pro offenses (“thanks Callahan, thanks Riley, here’s the door.”).

But I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t wind up at an east coast or SEC school. I think he prefers to be out east, and would like the benefits of the SEC (southeast talent, recruiting, media exposure, preferential rankings and preferential telecasts) to finally get that championship.

  11. I’m with you. I will believe offense is “explosive” when seen for more than 3-4 nice plays a game. Takes 15 or so “nice” plays and sustained drives to win with frequency in this league. Progress is usually incremental. You can have a breakthrough game buy most likely it will be a few more nice plays a game until we start winning some games.

Would be happy with winning 2 of the next 3 as right now the odds can’t be better than winning 1.5 of them if this is Vegas. Next 3 are all winnable though if we make enough strides. Just a matter are they ready to come out champs this week?

  12. Angie Machado on her podcast taking a shot at beavrecruiting. “I don’t twitter stalk! I have phone numbers, emails..” blah blah blah

No, she just has her minions do it for her. You don’t think other people have numbers/emails/contacts/etc? Your job’s not hard. Especially when you have disgruntled interns doing most of the actual work for you.

If she were smart, she wouldn’t try so hard to make enemies.

  13. What I take from Baldwin is a positive attitude that I don’t think I saw much from the 3 stooges. I don’t know what will happen Saturday, but I’m optimistic I won’t see on our sideline what you will see on the NU sideline. Very excited about the 3 run series of Nall and how crisp the offence looked. The Utah game last year with over 3 minutes to drive down and score to win, I have never seen such slow play ever and slow moseying back to the huddle. My High School had a better 2 minute drill.
    Go Beavs

    • I don’t know how to post this Beaverton high school “beaver” but I think he’s as good, if not better than ours. So that’s what that is.
I should have logged in because I was just testing it.
But, seriously, there are so many ways to make our beaver identity better.

  14. Gotta say, I was impressed with the Huskies last night. Petersen seems ahead of schedule with the defense. And the offense while certainly not impressive last night, showed moments of the impeccable execution Petersen gets out of his teams. They could be good in the upcoming years, and I think they will beat the Ducks this year.

    • From the Seattle Times:

“This ā€¦ this was a stunner.

      Three for the show

2010 The last time the Huskies beat a ranked team on the road, when UW beat USC, 32-31.

1 Third-down conversion, out of 13 attempts, for USC on Thursday.

156 Passing yards for USC QB Cody Kessler, a season low.

Washington, a 17-point underdog, upset No. 17 USC, 17-12, knocking off the Pac-12ā€™s preseason favorites and knocking down former UW coach Steve Sarkisian on Thursday at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before a primetime audience on ESPN.”

Stunner? That’s nothing! The Beavs once beat the Huskies in Seattle as 38(?) point underdogs…apparently nobody even showed for the press conference after.

Stunner? How about UW fans taking to the field after upsetting the Beavs (oh how times had changed), who had won 6 straight until they got kicked in the teeth by a hapless Husky team….hell, AngryBeavs even shut down for a few days.

      • I drove to seattle for that game. We played at C-link. I’ve never wanted to punch a woman in the face until some drunk huskies fan screamed right into my wife and i’s face “ENJOY THE RIDE HOME”…. Was not a good time….

  15. As my uncle always says…Sarkisian: Spanish for “4 losses.” I don’t even think he’s Spanish at all but it’s still hilariously true and I hope to god USC keeps him on as long as possible as it ensures USC will remain very beatable no matter the talent assembled.

    • It’s pretty funny how with USC’s great resources, they continually hire flawed/d bag coaches. Hadden seems to be a bit of a fool. How can you miss not once but twice in a row?

Kiffen’s hi-jicks were good for a chuckle, but at least they weren’t dirty.

Sark on the other hand can go choke on a box of dicks.

      • They’re still grasping at the Pete Carroll glory years. Thinking that they can keep hiring his assistants and somehow one of them will turn in to him.

They should have given Orgeron the job.

        • They also think their institutional history and recruiting means they can win independent of the quality of the coach; similar to Nebraska.

For schools with their marketplace and money, there’s no reason not to have one of the top 5-10 coaches in the country.

      • Hayden seems like a glory-days kind of ass to me, hired for the wrong reasons.

S-I fueling the Kelly-to-USC rumors…best Sark is jonesin’ for a drink today…the guy that beat him like a drum maybe taking his job from him…

      • Weird dynamic I have plenty of SC friends down here many hated the sark hire from the jump others were happy about the hire because the local media spin was Sark is from so cal so they will start getting the best local guys again ( kiffin neglected a lot of local kids for sec land) . At the end of the day a mediocre coach will be mediocre wherever he goes. Resources tradition etc don’t matter much once the balls kicked off.

  16. I listened to Jack Arute go on for about three minutes on radio yesterday about what a “great man” Mike Riley is……I was shouting “Brenda Tracy” at the radio over and over. I caught the tail end of the conversation, so I guess he was running cover for Gum Chomper. MR had more than just the local media snowed.

    • A good guy does not delegate everything but his paycheck. A good guy rolls up his sleeves and gets his hands dirty to help pull the load. A good guy does not play the lead in theater, emoting nothing more than hollow symbolism … while cashing that paycheck. He is a brand, a marketing image.

  17. Funny listening to the national media blast USC for losing to a team that had no business winning not called Oregon State. UW may as well be compared to Oregon State ala 1995 in all the analysis. While UW defense appears solid, that offense looks so bad. SC thus far looks miles ahead of Browning, although the stats do prove that out.

    • I don’t understand how people don’t realize by now that any team can win on any given day. I mean, this should be obvious. Especially a team coached by Sark. It was no surprise AT ALL.

      • I’m starting to realize that once a school of thought gets lodged in these lazy reporters brains, it’s really hard to get them to shift. I sometimes think it’s easy to go for the cliche when they are pressed for time with deadlines.

        • What’s odd is that before the season, people were expecting the pac to beat on each other and the team on top could have two losses. Then when it happens, they’re like “what the……”

      • I think what is more interesting is that the Road team has won every game, with the exception of Stanford and Cal who are the only teams to win a conference game at home.

Usc looked horrible, they were running the ball well but then they would go to the pass and their OL wouldn’t block anybody. It wasn’t that they were getting beat they looked like they had the wrong blocking reads called. Kessler the Senior looked very rattled.

UW looked okay, they did just enough to win, THey had a game plan and executed it close to perfection. But they needed to and did take advantage of some turnovers that were inexcusable on the Trojans end.

  18. Wearing a bright orange shirt in Tucson catching a lot of flak for it, but all in good fun. Wildcat fans think their team is pretty bad too, but they’re losing to UCLA in the same way we’re losing to Stanford so it’s not really that bad. I really do think tomorrow is going to be a good game where we can possibly win it.

My buddy that is an alum of UofA was complaining about how they weren’t running away with hoops wins last year when I reminded him of how we beat them in Gill this past year. I’m like “dude…you guys went 34-3; you lost to us, ASU, and to Wiscy in the tourney.” He gets no sympathy when we haven’t made it in 25 years.

    • I lived in Tucson in 97. My wife and I owned a clothing store on 4th avenue and it was bedlam that night.

Normally I hate teams that build a “dynasty” though I’m not sure UofA basketball quite qualifies, but its close. So for me, they don’t get any sympathy from me, EVER.
(I do this kinda cheer them on though as they were one of my better employers in my past)

  19. Impressed that Andersen’s average recruit star ranking is a full 3.0 right now. Riley never did much better than around 2.6-2.66 if I recall and usually was more like 2.3-2.33. GA has all 3 stars with two 2 stars and two 4 stars so far. One of those 2 stars is Joah Robinett who is very intriguing for a DE I think. 6-8 guy who could move to 3 star before signing day and is plenty intriguing as an athlete. Once we start winning conference games and Seth and the younger guys get that much more experience all the momentum will be there for things to take a real step up the next 2 years. Throw in the facility upgrades and brand new locker room and overhaul of the VFC and things will be getting fun for OSU Football very soon. We just need to work on those special teams and this team should start to gel. These higher calibre athletes are going to make a difference over the next several years as GA gets the Beavs back on the national radar. Best QB in the state right now plays at OSU and he is just getting started.

  20. It’s going to be tough to sleep tonight with the Beavs on deck and then the Mets.
Finally some redemption for being a fan of these awful franchises.

  21. OT…following a Husker board this week. Theme of “off with his head” gradually migrated to “hey we need to give these guys a chance,” and “this is a young team, Riley just needs time!”

    Comedy gold.

  22. On the topic of Nebraska, it’s possible that Riley lost his team with that game. The parallels to our 2014 Utah game last year are eerie.

And that senior O-lineman’s antics after the game certainly are consistent with that…as are the rumors that players have been getting in touch with their old coaches.

I’d say today is truly a must-win for Nebraska, in the fullest sense of the word.

    • He’ll probably win today to quell and divide the fanbase. This would be typical of Riley, since seems to pull out wins when the seat gets hot. Half will say it’s proof everything is okay and they were just a few plays away from 6-0.

Paul Chyrist is an equally mediocre coach, so it’s possible.

  23. Keys to the game today in Arizona:

1.) Score more points than you allow. Coach Riley never emphasized this important element enough.

2.) Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate before and during the gameā€¦ Water, GatorAide and Keystone Light.

3.) SPF 50. The defense may on the field up to three hours. Apply extra to the back of the neck. Receivers make sure to keep out of your eyes. That crap really burns and could impact your ability to catch the ball if it, miraculously, comes within your grasp.

4.) All players not involved in the action must face the student section to protect the coaching staff from projectiles. A bottle of Evian thrown from the 40th row is dangerous not a friendly offer of a cool drink.

5.) Verify all whistles on the field are from legitimate officials. Disregard and keep playing if the ref looks under 25 and/or is wearing flip-flops. JB

  24. I haven’t lost faith in Andersen, but the biggest problem for this team is not inexperienced QBs; its the defense

Shitake = Cavanaugh, a coach who gets by more on his personality than his wildly inconsistent results. A unit needs consistency.

Andersen was a D coordinator previously; he needs to intervene and direct on D more than he has.

The 4* safeties will help if OSU can hold them, but the D play calling, and ineffectiveness is embarrassing.

Criticize Collins all you want for his youthful mistakes, but he made a better tackle on a D player following his INT than many OSU D players would “make” on offensive players.

Hope Seth’s knee is sound, because it would be best for the program.
