Bend Scrimmage

310

First off, who’s going? Start time has been moved due to heat in case you didn’t hear. Also, maybe shoot some footage and upload it to youtube.

Anyway, what are you guys looking for tomorrow night? Obviously for me that’s Jake Luton’s performance. Hopefully we get to see all three QBs with the starting WRs, RBs, and offensive line, so we get a nice comparison point. Speaking of which, I’m also curious to see the line play. We keep hearing it will be a weakness. I’m not as bearish on the line as the major publications. Some interesting side stories for me are Villamin’s performance to see if this bounce back narrative is correct, and who’s returning kicks/punts — we could have an explosive return unit this year with the right unit.

  1. Gine mentioned yesterday that Bradford and Dwayne Wilkiams were fielding punts, while Seth also appeared to be part of that work group.
No mention of kick off return team.

    • Bradford and Seth were the two who came to mind. I trust Bradford a bit more catching punts. That would be a nice role to keep him involved, too. Seth could be deadly on kickoffs.

    • Choukair is likely, but hasn’t been named .
Kicker is actually my biggest question mark. Choukair was highly rated, but has very little experience in college yet (something like 2 fg attempts last year, i believe)
      The other 2 are walkons.

Call me crazy, but kicker is around my top 5 most important positions. They represent a huge chunk of the offense every year, and kickoff field position is important.

      • I’d agree, Choukair is probably the guy but Zach Standish was pretty highly rated. Chris Sailer’s kicking school had him #28 in the country his senior year, which is the two better than Choukair was rated, though Standish was 4.5 stars vs Choukair’s 5 star rating.

        Scouting report:

Jordan is an outstanding kicking prospect. A big time athlete with a very strong leg. Field goals are smooth and extremely consistent off the ground. He kicks with great confidence. Kickoffs can challenge at any level. He also shows nice punting potential. A fine young man with a great attitude. Is going to make a great addition to any college football program. I really like his future. Should have a nice career at Oregon State.

        vs

Zach is an outstanding kicker. He has a good leg and makes kicks with excellent consistency off the ground. Field goals and kickoffs are both solid and D1 college ready. Zach is a great prospect that will only continue to improve at the college level. A fine young man with a great attitude. A bright future awaits. Going to make a college football program that much better. Excellent prospect.

I know a couple of Zach’s relatives, it sounded like Mike Riley pretty much ignored the kid, even though Zach had dreamed of going to Oregon State his whole life and was rated in the top 25 kickers in the country for a while, that ranking dropped by the end, but still. Riley never once called him until Chris Sailer personally called Riley up to tell him the kid was a legit prospect, that he really needed to take a look at him. Even then, he still damn near didn’t even offer a walk on spot.

        • Does Chris Sailer rate every kicker in the country?
I feel like the rating I’ve seen from that site over the years have pretty much every kicker in the country at around 4* or 5*.
If that were the case, why would a guy like Standish not get a look from 50 other programs?
It just doesn’t add up, but I’ve never looked closely at the ratings

  2. Wish I could be there, hopefully someone can report on Elu Aydon and Bright Ugwoegbu. If those two are close to game shape now it will be a good sign. Noted that Aydon was overweight recently, I’d be interested in signs of his level of stamina.

Wasn’t commentor “youngorestate” gonna use his school district credentials to watch practice by now? Wonder if he’ll share.

Eggers up with a piece centered on the D-line, seems certain Evans will join the team this month. Hope he is right.

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/368315-250691-beaver-defense-looking-to-create-pressure-up-front

    • During the spring, Andersen set tangible team goals — 30 sacks, 30 takeaways.

This is really smart, btw. I saw it mentioned in other pieces, and again not much discussion about it, but by setting a high yet attainable goal you stoke ambition.

Also hearing a lot of reports (once again in the Egger’s piece) that the errors are way down in practice. That’s huge and not being emphasized.

  3. I’ll be there

Mainly looking at what kind of pass plays they are running. Hoping to see a vertical passing game along with some quick screens. Think this offense fails if it tries to win with an intermediate passing offense. Screens to keep the DB’s from backing off too much and get over the top when they bring extra guys into the box.

  4. As for going to some practices, I did not make it. Had too many other activities going on this week. Did have a buddy take some photos when he went, didn’t show a whole lot though.

    • It’s nice. Because they’re off the black/orange and introduced some grey. Contrast and shades are good things. Modern…and just good art. We shouldn’t be stuck with two colors that look like ass together because of tradition.

    • That can’t be real. There are no white stripey things going on. It’s just a solid orange stripe on black. What kind of madness is this? Didn’t we have similar patterns in 97-98?

One thing that always bugs me is that the flag is shown improperly. It’s not on a standard. But there are so many violations of the flag code nowadays by people who think they’re lovers of the flag. So i guess I shouldn’t care about violations of US statutes. Just let it go.

I’m not a huge fan of grey. There have been days in my life where all I saw was grey… literally… washed it… added more of it…. grey has smells attached to it I don’t really want to smell.

Why couldn’t we just order up solid black, orange and white unis just like that?

    • New uniforms definitely look dope. My only concern is if we only wear them against Minnesota, when we should be wearing them for multiple games throughout the season.

      • We now have black lids and pants we can wear with our orange tops that won’t look goofy.

The helmets are great. I just wish we would utilize the negative space better and lose the flaming shark fin outline around the logo. The abstract stencil looks pretty cool when contrasted simply.

        • Seriously. If they could just drop all the outlines and have the silver logo popping out of the black background, the helmet would go from good to great.

So simple. Why do they always have to over style shit.

Who thinks Andersen behind the scenes is giving a lot of input from the players to the designers? Seems like ever since he took the helm we’ve been moving forward. As corny as it is it’s a simple thing that excites the players.

  5. Will be there, if not too drunk after golf. Good options in bend tomorrow night, scrimmage-frampton/miller, first Friday and Marshall Tucker.

  6. In the “too obvious to mention” category: As is usual for GA, the team is starting the season with questions at CENTER; it will be nice if someone at scrimmage can report on the play of Sumner and Yanni.

  7. I’m flying up for at least one home game this year. then going road tripping to AZ and I’ll catch USC here at home.. Not practice though. All of you Oregonians should go if you can!

Also holding out hope to be able to drive down to San Diego or by some miracle up to Pasadena for a bowl game :)

  8. OT: Mama Machado and Sprague have a 40+ minute podcast up; around 31:00 they talk about Smilin’ Mike and actually admit that he wasn’t perfect!! Sprague thinks that TPB’s are already buying the new QB excuse for this year and gives MR till next year before the seat gets really hot.

    https://soundcloud.com/dam-podcast
It’s titled: Panic on the Offensive Line?

    • Yeah I posted that in the other thread. It was a good show overall.

BUT, so cowardly that they criticize MR now. At the time, they supported him and were part of the problem because they perpetuated the narrative. Now they’re pretending like they saw his flaws and talked about them at the time. They didn’t. So lame and cowardly there aren’t words for it.

  9. First I had heard of this in the O today:

“The group’s wild card is the status of highly touted junior college transfer Craig Evans, who is finishing coursework and could miss the first couple games of the season because of OSU’s academic calendar.”

    not good.

  10. Gina tweets: “Among those not suited up for Oregon State’s scrimmage tonight: Isaiah Dunn, Justin Gardner, Jay Irvine and Shawn Wilson. All corners.”

      • Nall played one snap, per blitz early on.

Per the tweeter mentioned by nicebeaver below: “Wow! Doug Taumoelau just stuck and drove back Nall at the goal line to deny the TD.”

EDIT: Here are the final stats for Nall: 5 rushes, 22 yds, 0 TD’s

          • Yep… might as well pack it in. One play tells us how the whole of the season will go.

At least we didn’t send three players to the hospital in warm-ups. Imagine the outlook on the season if our coaches didn’t care about player safety and health.

    • Thanks, Dam_Loyal has several significant observations:
“Lavaka is another guy not suited upnand playing tonight”
“Interesting to see Sattlemaier playing with the 3’s. Was supposed to challenge at the tackle position.”
“Everything no huddle so far. Emphasis on pace.”
“…Hawkins has dropped three balls thrown right to his hands in two series.”

  11. The School’s site has a story up, includes some individual stats. Emphasizes Luton’s performance, rightly so, I suppose.

“Sophomore kicker Jordan Choukair continued his impressive offseason by making all five of his field goal attempts, including two from 50 yards.

Earlier I saw that The School will post videos tomorrow.

    http://www.osubeavers.com/news/2017/8/4/football-luton-and-togiai-connect-for-three-tds-in-scrimmage.aspx?path=football

    • This is good to see…

Sophomore kicker Jordan Choukair continued his impressive offseason by making all five of his field goal attempts, including two from 50 yards.”

  12. Qb stats messed up, but use ur head

  13. It looks like the YPC for the backs overall was a little over 5 yards. That would get us a lot of first downs. Maybe someone who was there could comment on the degree this was due to (a) good backs, (b) good OL, or (c) DL problems. Perhaps OL and DL was a bit of a standoff and the backs made the difference?

  14. Say what you want about Luton and it was just a scrimmage but those are damn good numbers, granted against the 2nd team defense. I’m a little shocked nobody has mentioned the up tempo no huddle we’re apparently running. It’s miles away from huddling up and taking a lot of our snaps from under center like last year, and I feel like when run correctly an offense with pace can confuse/gas the defense at times.

      • Totally. If we can average 4 yards a carry though it should leave us in a lot of favorable 2nd/3rd and medium which is very convertible especially when you compare it to prior years when it was always 3rd in 8+ almost every drive.

    • There were few if any snaps under center last year if I recall. I’d actually like to see them takes some snaps from under center. I think it could help the run game at times.

Teams have seen enough of the no huddle that don’t think it in itself provides an advantage. Do they execute it without “administrative” penalties and does McGiven keep the D off balance with strategic and diverse play calling? That was one thing I enjoyed about Chip Kelly’s play calling, he confused people then eventually took their hearts out of the game.

  15. Love the video highlights of the scrimmage on Twitter. I remember during the Riley era people were losing their minds about fans reporting what formations were being run. The thought was other teams would read a message board and use that info against them. Such a false handwringing.

  16. Ended up at scrim for about a half hour–place was packed–paper says 3,800 in attendance. Good PR to have the fan fair prior with many kids getting autographs.

    • Good in-state marketing in general. I love that they have made that an emphasis. I hope they keep the Bend trip a yearly part of camp.

      • I was really surprised with the fan turnout. It would be generous to say there was 20% of that number of people last year.

  17. Back to Luton real quick. If they mix tempo with play action downfield, that seems to be a great fit for Luton. He ran a veer offense in high school, so he should be able to take hits better than most taller qbs, and now he has developed into a decent thrower. Even on a zone read he might be pretty effective with long strides etc.
Big Ben had 17 tds/9 int, 2400 yds his 2nd year, (missed 4 games) but led the NFL in yards per attempt and won a Super Bowl ring with a great running game, tough defense. Maybe we can get something like that out of Luton.

    • Verdict? The GT has a notebook piece up, seems GA was pleased.
Nothing on the O-line, but there is this from GA on the D-line, a group he seemed to call out earlier in the year:
“The core group, that first five, has played very, very well so far in camp. They are doing some good things. It’s great to see.”

      http://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-notebook-a-successful-week-in-bend/article_0b73d6de-98c3-5e15-90de-310bab47f6a1.html

Interesting additional quote from GA about both controversial and happy moments: “This team is very edgy and they like to compete. They battle against each other day in and day out.

“But I think we’ve grown as a team in some times that were controversial — we’ve handled them and grew from them — and some times that were very happy moments. You do that when you get together and you’re locked in a very nice dorm room for six days.”

  18. OT- I read this morning in a local fish rag that the Quacks have the #1 recruiting class in the nation. I’m assuming that’s for ’18 or ’19 (and I know it will change over time)? Of course, the article wasn’t very specific, just hyping up whatever the hell is going on down there. I don’t get it, nine months ago, I doubt any of these recruits could even tell you if South Florida had a college football team or knew who Taggart was. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I thought top level recruiting was head coach driven at the legacy programs, Alabama, USC, LSU all went through dry spells with poor coaching hires. Taggart can’t be considered elite at this point. Maybe it is more school driven than I thought? Maybe I just don’t understand recruiting.

    • What’s a fish rag? That makes no sense. Are you talking about a newspaper being used for fish and chips? That would make sense. But if you wrap a fish in a newspaper, you end up with a sticky pile of garbage. I suppose if you wrapped the fish in grass then wrapped it in newspaper, then you have a slightly less dumb wrapper.

I’m guessing some moron who thought he was being clever made up this moniker. Only an idiot would wrap a fish in newspaper. I’m sure they must have meant fish and chips (or bacon even). Newsprint is very good at draining oils.

        • Sigh what?

Have you ever seen anyone wrap a fish in newsprint?

I highly doubt it. It would be a really dumb thing to do.

Find another not-so-clever moniker, or you’re throwing your lot in with whatever morons made that idiocy up. I’m not going to bame you for that idiocy, because I’ve seen it at least a couple times. But I will say something about it here.

Don’t be dumb just because some other dummy says something you think is clever. Start thinking for yourself.

          • Next you’re going to tell me people wrap meats in newsprint and stick them in the freezer.

That would actually make more sense. It would still be dumb. But it would be more viable than wrapping a fish in it.

My best guess is that some moron was listening to some Brit talk about newspapers as worthy of only a fish and chip wrapper, and said moron made it into some poorly translated English-to-English meaning that makes him look the fool… and nobody cares enough about him to correct his obvious stupidity.

          • Lars?

            Ulrich?

I’ve heard him talk about the media, mostly as it related to his litigation about copyright. I never heard him use that term. And he’s fairly measured about the media in general. So I don’t think he would feel the need to make up some dumb and cutesy moniker for newspapers.

I’ve only seen it here and there online. This is maybe the third time I’ve read it here in this context. I’ve heard newspapers called birdcage liners quite a bit… gossip rags… never a fish rag/wrap/wrapper. Even back when Brits did wrap chippies in newsprint (30 years ago?), it wasn’t called that.

So I don’t know why you’re blaming a musician for this. It’s not been around forever. It’s a fairly recent meme. Lars does have some pull in the world. So maybe he just misspoke, and people ran with it before he could clarify his dumb utterance.

  19. Nice one on ST:

Freshman running back Calvin Tyler Jr. and freshman receiver Tino Allen made the most of their opportunities when the Beavers worked on kickoff returns in the scrimmage.

Both had long returns that nearly ended in touchdowns.

Andersen said it was the first time the Beavers have taken live reps on kickoff return this fall, and it was good to see the potential for some explosive plays.

Great choices for returns. If they get Bradford on punts that would be nice.

    • Is it worth it to burn their redshirt for special teams play?
I just dont see Tyler getting many reps at RB this year, and Allen may be in a similar spot at WR.
If these 2 are our legitamite best options in the return game I’d be all for it.

      • I think it’s worth it, because from what I saw on film of those two they’re just as good as some of the players starting. Might as well get them on the field. Also, we have no problem recruiting RB and WR, so to burn RS at that position doesn’t concern me. I think those guys can all change games around, so put them out there, get them real game experience, and have them ready to go (e.g. Nall will be hurt at some point, so we’ll need Tyner as the 3rd RB). Allen has the body to start right now. It’s different than say the Wheaton situation where they barely used him. If these guys are on returns all year and 4th on the depth chart that’s a valid job worthy of burning the RS.

        • Makes sense to me. Looking forward to seeing them in person this weekend. Will try to capture some footage, but that’s always difficult with kids in tow.
If enough of us can capture some plays on video, we should make a post dedicated to aggregating all of the clips.

      • Same here, on both counts.

This, to me, is an indication that those who thought McM had no passion for the game and was simply a mild mannered nerd were mistaken. If there was a beat reporter who spent time developing sources rather than taping coach speak and conducting background checks maybe we’d have a better idea of the reasons behind McM’s decision and if he felt fairly treated, a better idea of who was the driving factor in the decision which led to him leaving.

Not saying he was clearly better than Luton, just that he’d shown enough to have started vs ColoSt; certainly enough to be the clear backup should Luton go down.

Obviously, this will go down as a key decision in the (early) GA era. Gotta wonder if the Luton>McM decision was one of those “controversial” moments to which GA alluded.

We’ll know in the first two games if Luton looks the part, it’ll take all season to learn how important the backup QB position is this year.

BTW, didja hear that slick willie talked of opening competition for backup QB to other position players?

          • The buck stops with GA; still, gotta wonder how influential were other voices……..”Chuckie”, McGiven, Baldwin……..

        • This, to me, is an indication that those who thought McM had no passion for the game and was simply a mild mannered nerd were mistaken.

I don’t know how you get that. Giving up when you don’t step up and take charge means you have passion for something?

Again, he may have a better academic set-up for grad school. Until he clarifies his decision, I think it would be wise to reserve speculation on motive. There are several valid reasons to leave other than he just couldn’t or wouldn’t step up.

          • Here is my thinking. If McM wasn’t a fighter and had little interest in actually playing the game, if he was a wimp who didn’t mind harsh treatment by the boss, if he were a a milquetoast, “go along to get along” type then staying at OSU would have been the easy way to go.

Maybe self respect would have been more accurate than passion.

          • Nobody said anything about easy. You said passion. Giving up is almost as easy as sticking around. One could say they’re the same thing, although I would value his leadership if he stayed. That is apparently non-existent as well.

Again… the above statement should be reserved for him just running away. He very well may have academic opportunities he wanted to pursue but ignored until now because he thought he might be more valuable than he is as a football player.

I can totally see him going Ivy League and getting his MPH while playing there.

  20. Will be interesting to see where he lands. With some development I still feel he can be a really good QB. I think if this staff would have believed in him from the start things would have been much different.

  21. How to explain McM situation:
    a) Luton was and is better than we know, McM saw it coming all along
    b) Garretson at #2, reveals that he wasn’t healthy from the beating against Minny last year until his ankle injury, McM saw that as well
    c) McM has been behind the 8-ball because he never was GA’s first choice but has been resilient, couldn’t do it for a 3rd year and wants to move on
    d) GA has preached aggressiveness in all phases of the game, this must include how he approaches the coaching part which helps understand why he has decided to gamble with QB rather than make a safe play with McM

If these are true, Garretson already beat out McM in last year’s fall camp so our #2 qb will be fine. GA is going for the upside with Luton which we don’t know yet but I expect will be better than advertised and Beavs should win 7-9 games.

  22. If McM goes to UofO it would be the worst case scenario of payback against GA for 3 years of yanking him around. But he has graduated and had a free education, hope he goes someplace like SJSU and gets 2 full years as a starter to show what he is capable of.

Angry may have been right regarding McM’s abilities but it is time to move on now. I’m all in on GA and Luton, expecting big things this year and next year is the year for a amjor bowl run with all of GA’s guys and a junior/senior heavy team, senior qb.

    • “time to move on now”……Yes, no choice.
Here’s some rare kool aide……..does his leaving now nearly eliminate the chance of divisions within the team over the naming of Luton as #1?

      • If it was a dead heat when Luton was sick as a dog during Spring, how is it possible that the team doesn’t recognize Luton as the guy with the most upside? I would think there could be more divisions in the team if the wrong guy started due to seniority vs skill/ability. Isn’t that the beef with Riley and his seniors who weren’t as good as the underclassmen but still started? Any guys who are still fully on board with McM as a starter at this point, would likely be Riley guys with that mentality of seniority and “I put in my time, and it’s my turn now” GA doesn’t really play that tune.

It is surprising to me that McM is actually transferring because it is a bad look to just bail on the team after going through the off-season and part of fall camp. He endured 2 years of frustration, opportunities, close to climbing the mountain with this group of teammates and now he leaves.

        • He was also passed over for :

          Seth Collins
          Darrel Garretson
          Conor Blount
          And Now Jake Luton

He’s a better QB then all of the first three and Luton remains to be seen. If anyone of you wouldn’t also peace the fuck out id be worried. The right move was to let Luton push the kid and have MCM start game 1. The beavers are a worst football team today and are now 1 rolled ankle from Garreston at the helm.

      • What divisions?

Where are we even getting this, “MM should be the starter even if he doesn’t step up and take it,” mentality?

His reported effort in the scrimmage was less than poor. His stats show that effort. He had already given up. I see no passion from him in this sport. Yet he could still be a part of this team, having helped to get it through some tough years.

        • “His reported effort in the scrimmage was less than poor”…….source?

“What divisions?”…….said the chance of divisions, in what was mentioned as an extreme kool aide way of viewing the move as positive for the team.

Haven’t noticed anyone with: “MM should be the starter even if he doesn’t step up and take it,” mentality.

BTW, Jack, are you gonna have time to run a pool on CFB this season? Enjoyed it when you did. What was it, the 2015 season?

          • I hadn’t though about the pool. It was fun. But I lost all info when my laptop was hacked, and I was sour on all things lost (not just some simple spreadsheets) at that time.

I should take a cue from modern tech and create a cloud-based format on wordpress. We can make it amendable by multiple parties and just show the link instead of transposing all the info into a post.

  23. With the McM transfer things heated up. GA better have nailed the QB situation now because there is no plan B.

So glad he transferred. Sticking it to this staff is the right thing to do in this situation.

  24. ” Sticking it to this staff is the right thing to do in this situation.”

How so? What would be the benefit for him to react in such a way? As a maturing young man looking to have a career outside of football, why would he burn bridges and create such a self defeating resume?

    • I can see it if he can get in to a nice master’s program somewhere and compete to start. Sour grapes/spite seems self defeating.

      • “Sour grapes/spite seems self defeating.”

Or, “Self pity is the first step toward self destruction, and we aren’t going there”…Pat Casey, after the Snub of 2016.

    • The benefit is that they stuck it to him, and payback is a bitch. It’s not burning bridges. He probably just told them he’d like to leave and go take a shot at starting somewhere else. Doubt GA is going to talk badly about a guy who was the ultimate team player.

  25. If he is really 3rd on the depth chart then that means that he is behind garretson who can’t hit the broad side of a barn. I don’t blame him for leaving.

    • DG couldn’t hit the side of the bar because he had a weak O-line to protect him and his receivers couldn’t get any separation. He’ll be a competent back up.

    • Why does everybody keep saying he was 3rd string?
Just listen to Mcgiven’s comments feom after practice. He says DG will move up to 2nd now and Blount behind him.

      • GA was being much more ambiguous about it. Think he said they would have to battle it out for the 2nd spot or some bullshit like that

        • Yes… fuck that competition bullshit. Does he think this is some sort of sport or something?

I mean… MM put on 20 pounds of muscle and spent the whole summer training with the WRs. That’s why we think it was a bad decision for GA to name JL as the #1. MM showed that he did work to be better than he was at the end of last season, which was a guy who could hand it off 20-some times in a row.

  26. On the MCM to oregon possibility. If he goes there, it’s because of pure spite. No way is he beating out their current QB, he’ll be a backup just like here. I’m assuming he wants a starting job, SJSU would be a good place for him.

  27. OT – Not a lot here, but at Fresno Tedford said there is open competition with existing top two QBs, looking for a game manager, leader – including vocal, and point of emphasis is someone who will protect the football. Will name a starter in time to game plan for opener.

And Fresno looking to be able to vary tempo in a spread offense:

  28. I was one who responded to Angry about “going on the record” about Luton/McM. I went with “Lute” but I’m still sorry to see McM leave. For one thing, he beat Oregon, which is something Mannion never did. I’ll follow him with interest and wish him well. As for “sticking it” to the coaching staff, I remember listening to Hugh Millen on KJR in Seattle crowing about how Brett Favre “stuck it” to the Packers for toying the idea of starting Aaron Rodgers. Riiiiight.

    • Tyner 6th year for medical hardship sounds like a plan and it sounds like GA expects it will happen.
Next year’s 2018 roster will have some pretty good depth across the board, except on the D-Line and QB.
Too bad they have Ohio State that year to start the season.

        • Seriously. If the O line could really gel and maybe pull a few more JC linemen as reenforcements the offense could really pop. Force them to stack the box.

    • Lots of nice info there; reasons for optimism. RB Tyler sounds very intriguing and the beavs are looking great at RB for a while.

Also like the comment about preferring a 60:40 run:pass dependent on defense and also eschewing convenient terms (“air raid”) for “OSU offense.”

    • They’ll still have a pretty nice class, but it won’t be anywhere near a top 5 ranking in the nation like they’ve been claiming lately.
Just look at the current rankings. A big piece of what makes up the total points they use to rank teams is “total commits”. At this point, most teams don’t have 20+ verbal commitments. Oregon already having 22 guys pledging to go their gives them a huge numbers boost, when most other teams are in the teens or lower.

If these sites were to rank based on average star ranking, it would make more sense. Class sizes vary from year to year. If you check out Oregon’s average rating, they would rank around the mid to mid 20’s right now. That is something that I could see project out as the year goes on and all of the teams in the nation fill out their classes. It’s a little bit smoke and mirrors at this point to claim they are a top 5 class.

      • Yeah, but it keeps the positive messaging/image for them for a period of time…which is half their goal. At least.

Until they play at least some semblance of defense, all the hype won’t matter much. They’ve had two – three years of just atrocious defense.

  29. Has Oregon State ever had a single year where all of the big 3 (football, basketball, baseball) men’s sports made it to the post season?
It doesn’t look like it ever happened in the 60’s or 50’s, when all 3 teams made runs, but not all in the same year.

This year has the potential for that with football and basketball looking like bubble teams

  30. Question for the board for those who have seen a practice or scrimmage. What do you perceive the relationship is between him and his players? Haven’t heard of anyone commenting on this? He seems like enigma.

  31. Beavs will beat the Uw nutlickers this year, mark it down. I can’t wait to call Softy and tell him we don’t need to rush the field since its just UW.

  32. Was looking up Fresno State’s schedule to see who McM would be playing, should he land the starting job. They have Alabama followed by Washington in games 2 and 3.
Fresno is going to need that extra QB after those games.

  33. At least he is consistent?

“Gary Andersen did something similar in 2014 when he started transfer Tanner McEvoy over incumbent Joel Stave at QB in Wisconsin’s first five games. McEvoy had more success at safety and wide receiver than QB and today is a wideout with the Seattle Seahawks. “

    • This is the crap at Wisconsin I have been referring to. During that camp, Stave was clearly outplaying him and yet GA stuck to his plan of the dual threat QB. The players started speaking off the record to beat reporters so everybody knew what was going on.

    • He’s awful with QBs. Has he ever been right? Didn’t he inherit Keaton from the prior coach or went to him b/c of injury/necessity, or am I off?

At this point I just assume whoever GA picks is the worst guy for the job. That’s his reputation until he strings together a bunch of correct decisions.

      • The thing that gives me some optimism this time around is the addition of Jason Phillips to the coaching staff. Dude has been around successful passing games his entire playing and coaching career and if anyone knows what is needed it’s him.

Here’s hoping. I’d be fine with some run and shoot.

        • I like Phillips, but I haven’t seen much from McGiven so far to indicate we are in good hands at OC.
The rain almost forced us to win the Civil War last year more than anything. We abandoned the pass and found success at the same time. If it had stayed dry in the 2nd half, I’m not so sure we win that game.

          • Yeah I’m not entirely sold on him either. Let’s see what he can do with one clear starter at QB and a mountain of quality RBs.

    • I agree with him that football and school, at this level, are not very compatible, particularly when taking at least 12 credits a term to maintain full-time status. One term I had two two-hour mechanical engineering classes back-to-back with Sam Curtius and Timmy Hernandez twice a week. When the first class began at 8 AM, they looked BEAT. Amazingly enough they paid attention and never slept through class.

    • College football will die in our lifetime. Paying players, corruption/ESPN picking the winners, or unsustainable tuition costs will be the death nail. There are a lot of headwinds and not many tailwinds, despite what the ratings may say. Social media is spreading the word about all the problems, so there’s that as well. NCAA used to be able to hide from the ignorant masses.

  34. So bad news… per sources, allegedly Evans has some “other” issues that are not academic that will probably have him out potentially half the season. Still a rumor at this point but he is well on his way to Kuli status.

    • This is rough to listen to. They don’t know a lot about football, despite watching the team daily. They make the odd deduction that a QB being 6″7 makes him good…a lot of people are making this error. Same with the arm strength. Amazing people still make these errors and think height/power arm mean good QB…

Maybe he turns out to be good, but it won’t be because of height or arm. It will be because of his decision making and accuracy.

  35. Just listened to McGiven get interviewed by Dino Costa during my commute. I have even less confidence in him now. Did anybody else listen? Curious what your impressions are.
Maybe he’s just not comfortable being interviewed. Hopefully that’s all there is to it.

    • Why less confident? I think he was at Utah State with Andersen, correct? I have concerns about him too, particularly with a project likeLuton.

      • It’s hard to put a finger on it and I don’t want to sound like I’m bashing on the guy. I just came away from listening to him feeling like I just got done listening to a Riley interview. Lots of “um”, “uh”, stuttering, etc.
He sounds like a slow thinker to me. Like a guy who wouldn’t be well suited to making decisions on the fly.
And when asked if the McMaryion transfer announcement Sunday was a surprise to him, he started to answer, then paused for an unvomfortable silence and gave some sortof “yes and no” answer which came off like he was just avoiding answering the question.
And he called his own running back “Tyler Calvin”
That can’t make your players feel good when you don’t even get their name right.

I didn’t come away thinking he was confident in himself, so now I’m not confident in him.

Maybe it was just a bad interview. I don’t think I’ve heard him speak before. Will keep an eye out for the podcast so you all can tell me if I’m off base or not, because I want to be wrong about him.

    • glad to learn Dino is in the Portland market. I used to listen to him on Mad Dog Radio on XM but then he got into a stupid dispute with Russo and got canned. He is worth cultivating re: the Angry Beavs world view: critical thinking etc.

      • He’s a lowest common denominator guy who would be a white supremacist if his name wasn’t Dino. With more than one option out there (like staring at a wall), why would you choose to spend your tie listening to this guy? If you want high blood pressure, just eat more salt.

He’s a walking dildo that looks like he’s been rode hard and put up wet.

  36. With McM officially going to Fresno State, I’m just a little curious about his reported (here) twitter exchange with nikegon. Just pullin’ their chain??
SJSU seemed more likely, whatever. Good luck to him.

    • I think it’s telling that he had to step down to G5 level. Lends evidence to the Beavers not having a Pac 12 caliber QB on the roster. So GA is definitely taking a flier on an unproven product, but the alternative didn’t have much upside. And at least from the scrimmage, it sounds like DG and 3M were relatively even for the 2nd spot. So, maybe they didn’t lose much except depth with the transfer.

        • I get the moving closer to home angle, but, how much eligibility does he have left? Two years? Does he think he’s moving into a starters role with football starting in a couple of weeks? That’s silly.

  37. Multiple head coaches, and multiple O-Coordinators disagree with you Angry about Mc3rdstring. Have you ever once thought maybe you’re the one wrong about him?

  38. Tight end Isaiah Smalls says he has news to announce tonight at 7pm. Not sure if it’s a verbal commitment or something different, but if it is a verbal, I think it will be OSU.

  39. Typical Oregon State. They have a scrimmage on Saturday that they’ve beem advertising as “Family Fun Day” for several weeks.
Was supposed to include a scrimmage at noon followed by autographs, and then they were going to show Moana on the jimbotron for kids who want to watch itfrom the field.

Then, a couple of days before the event they drop a schedule change and move the movie to Sunday night at 6pm.

So, part of the draw for family fun day isn’t even happening on the same day. This may not bug everybody here, but for people with kids who had been planning on this event for weeks (like me and my kids) now are going to cancel our plans. Isn’t the point of family fun day to draw younger fans closer to the program?
My kids dont care about football at ages 2 and 4, but they love Moana. They will be more likely to be interested in beaver football in a few years if theyre familiar with the team and the stadium.

And the reason for moving the movie out a day is “high temps”
It’s forecasted to be 84 on Saturday and 82 Sunday.
I swear, we can’t get out of our own way.

    • High temps and the Willamette wilderness burning.

The air has sucked hard for the last week. 107 and 105 last week was the worst. Visibility was maybe a mile. And that was just to see the silhouettes of hills. The air quality warning was extended to Friday as of this morning. I’m guessing they’ll extend it into the weekend if high temps continue the inversion over the valley.

Even if you had plans to take your kids to Corvallis on Saturday, I would advise against going unless you want to feel like you’ve smoked a half a pack that evening.

      • Forecast is now 80 for high on Saturday and rain possible on Sunday. Our sports marketing really can be boneheaded.
Why schedule an event in August if 80 degrees is considered too hot anyway? Of course it’s going to be warm. Don’t make it 3:00pm in the first place.

Reminds me of the scrimmage in Bend last week, where they originally scheduled it for 3:00pm on friday. The high temps saved their ass in that case, where they had to reschedule it to the evening. And guess what, they had good attendance because people can actually attend events on Friday evening.
If they had kept it at 3:00, who the hell would have been able to show up other than the unemployed?

Is the goal to make things more difficult and confusing for the fans?

    • I agree with you, it matters to me and my family. I also continue to take exception with the closed practices. Locals enjoyed taking the kids to Truax on any given practice day and mingling close up with the team. I just don’t think Anderson gives a damn about community outreach or public relations. That’s fine, he a football coach, but somebody needs to be hired to handle PR because right now, in Corvallis, there isn’t any. Maybe it’s in Bend.
