General Thread/Early CSU predictions

457

General thread leading up to game day.

What’s your biggest concern? For me, Center and QB.

Watching this Houston video didn’t help. For one he looks undersized, but then he mentions he’s been snapping it too low. It’s giving me visions of fumbled snaps and Luton INTs game 1.

How about laying down your early CSU predictions? I still can’t get a feel for this game (mostly because I haven’t seen Luton and have no idea what production to expect there). Early gut feel is we turn it over several times when we pass, but also rack up a lot of rushing yards. It feels slightly more like a loss than a win to me, but I’m not at all sure. I’m taking the a@a easy way out and going with no opinion.

  1. Funny you should say Houston looks small. I have some pics from the scrimmage last week of my daughter getting autographs with several players. Houston is among them. I didn’t know who he was when he came up to us because I had never seen him w/o a helmet before. Looked him up later and was surprised he was our Center. Didn’t look much bigger than Ryan Nall. Same height and maybe a little heavier.

      • Did you link the video? It doesn’t show him at all below his shoulders. It’s also a close up. My take away certainly wasn’t that he seems small as it is impossible to tell.

He’s listed at over 290lbs. He should be fine.

  2. I will admit to having bad feelings the night before the Sac State game and voicing them to several people. I don’t feel the same about this. It feels like a win to me. I think this team will be more successful as more of a pro-style offense based on running and play-action than they will as some kind of run-and-shoot or beavair-raid.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a two-back offense (does anyone run that anymore?). Option to Nall and Tyner. Occasionally throw.

    • I hope you are right about the two back O. Myself, I don’t have confidence that McGiven can call a productive game. I fear he will, not only forego a two back attack, but will not be able to forget GA’s comments about the need for big plays. I see him putting unnecessary stress on the o-line (Sumner in particular) by calling too many pass plays.

I expect the D to keep the Beavs in the game, especially looking forward to production from the LB’s.

This thing could be anywhere from a close loss to a 14+ pt victory. So early to tell, I’m hoping GA has these guys wearing their big boy pants and playing with as much heart and even more solid technique than last year.

Gun to my head, the D and Beavs rushing game is good enough to overcome nearly 50% passing plays and a couple ints. Beavs by 6………..maybe.

      • You’re talking about the guy who called 21 run plays in a row vs hole last year.

You need to wash the Simple Jack stink off. He’s gone. It’s gonna be ok.

        • “the guy who called 21 run plays in a row vs hole last year.”

Indeed, he did. However, I seriously doubt he felt McM was 1/2 the passer that Luton is, and I also think the weather entered into his play selection.

Looking forward to you being correct and to the very pleasant surprise of a well called offense; say just over 2/3 rushes to set up a productive pass attack.

BTW, one shot kill on a pronghorn last weekend, w/o the aid of any noveske products. lol

  3. Sounds like o-line is the biggest question mark for CSU, so that intrigues me. That said, our secondary is the least experienced part of the defense and CSU is supposed to have a good passing game, so I could see us giving up a lot of points.

I think our offense is going to be the wildcard here, as it has the most unknowns (QB and O-line) and squares off against the weaker of CSU’s units. If they have to score quickly, can we lean on the running game to do so, or will we have to depend on our new QB?

One thing to keep in mind is that Mike Bobo is a third-year coach who inherited a lot from McElwain. He has gone 7-6 in his first two years, but this is the point where the team is really his rather than his predecessor’s. He had a strong reputation as a passing game guru at UGA, but what can his defenses do?

This feels like a close loss to me, just because of the questions on our offense and the Rams’ home field advantage.

    38-31 CSU

    • Feels like a win. Home field crowd and excitement make it a close game in the first half. We pull away in the second half as our running game wears them down. The team is bigger and stronger this year. The defense will be better this year after a second year understanding the Clune system. Reports are that practices are running well with less confusion as players can react without thinking, knowing the system. The team has elite players at key skill positions, yes Luton at quarterback is an unknown, but from what I’ve heard is doing well and shows maturity and leadership. This will be a solid year for the Beavs. Yes, there are unknowns which make it tough to predict the first game, but there is a good vibe around this team. Q the Beach Boys Jack…

  4. Beavs will run well against them and will run it 40 times. Luton will only throw 20 passes, half of them to Togiai. Biggest concern is OSU D-Line giving up 5+ on 1st down. But the Beav secondary will keep Gallup from getting anything deep.

    27-21 Beavs

  5. I think Luton to Togiai til they gang up on him, them Luton to Hodgins til they loosen up, then Luton to Togiai…

That on top of Nall and Tyner pounding it could make for a long day.

  6. Not sure how I go from not being worth a response to not having an opinion…?

McMaryion doesn’t start, and Beavs win by 10.

    • McMaryion doesn’t start

Wrong last time you said it, and probably wrong again. They’re trying to make him the starter at Fresno.

Fresno State coach Jeff Tedford on fall scrimmage No. 2 on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017. The first-year coach also discusses the arrival of Oregon State transfer Marcus McMaryion, likely to move into contention for the starting quarterback job as fast as he can learn the Bulldogs’ system.

      • first year of eligibility… Collins started, then Mitchell, then your boy. 2nd year; Garretson, then Blount, then your boy. This year he was atleast behind Luton, maybe others.

        Mc3rdstring.

      • To be fair, he only said he would, “GUARANTEE 100%,” that MM would never start a game at OSU… back in 2015… despite reasons obvious then and more so now.

36#9oz… third cast… then about two dozen pikeminnow paid for the day

        eat it

  7. Summer Houston snaps are a concern. However, size is really not an issue at center. Summer Houston is 6’2 and 294 lbs and Ryan Kalil (all pro 2015) is listed generously at 6’2 and 300 lbs.

  8. I remember my dad and I discussing a lot of wins and loss predictions dating back to the late 90’s. A lot of our wins came from the success of the RB. If the RB’s can amass a run game of over 100 yards, we win. I’ll back this up with stat’s later, but with a new ERA of GA’s guys and team, I would say if we can’t rush for more than 150+ yards and pass for more than 200+ yards we will lose.

With all that said, I don’t know enough of CSU other than they have had new coaches every 3-5 years for the last what, 8-12 seasons now? I feel this will be a tough battle in the first half, but whichever team makes the halftime adjustments or changes the game plan like we did in the Civil War last year, then we will win this game. I honestly feel this team is hook line and sinker bought in with this GA program that whatever the coaches ask the kids, they will do it. Players Make Plays, it’s just the coaches job to put them in a position and mindset to make those plays.

    • Here’s a really good site for getting the last 9 years worth of game stats and individual stats:

      http://www.cfbstats.com/2016/team/528/rushing/offense/split.html

Basically under Riley if we didn’t run the ball wih an AVG of 110 yards/game or more, we lose…with Anderson it’s a little more complicated… in 2015 wins AVG’d out to 292 yards/game while losses were 154.40 yards/game while 2016 win AVG 310 yards/game while losses AVG 132.50 yards/game. Then you need to look at passing, turnovers and yards allowed by our defense. Riley was predictable, Anderson is not straight forward and predictable.

    • Logged in so I can update as I go.

2016 wins the defense held teams to an AVG of 196.50 yards/game rushing
losses the defense held teams to AVG of 228.75 yards/game rushing
      .
2015 wins the defense held teams to an AVG of 81 yards/game rushing
Losses the defense held teams to an AVG of 254.40 yards/game rushing.

Gave up more yards/game in 2016 wins, but wins went up(hence the complicated part).

      2015 wins AVG of 122.50 yards/game passing
Losses AVG was 166.40 yards/game passing

      2016 wins AVG of 155.80 yards/game passing
losses AVG of 182.9 yards/game passing

2016 wins defense allowed AVG of 188 yards/game passing
losses defense allowed AVG of 222.80 yards/game passing

2015 wins defense allowed AVG of 134.50 yards/game passing
losses defense allowed AVG of 280.30 yards/game passing

So we rush more than 200 yards and give up less than 200 yards rushing
      AND
we pass for less than 160 yards and give up less than 200 yards passing
      AND
      Defense wins the turnover margin/game

We will win. So, the question is, is our defense that good to allow a total of 400 yards total offense/game in passing and rushing, and get turnovers?

That is to be determined. We need one more season to know for sure if this data tells us anything.

  9. I thought this game was a win but you guys are giving me pause. I think they run the ball well all game which opens up big plays in the passing game. A few big plays and stops by the d get the beavs the win.

    38-31

  10. Since this is the first game of the year and at high altitude I think depth will play a significant role for both teams (more so than usual). I think our secondary will be a strength (despite the turnover) as well as our run game. That would seem to match up well against Colorado State. I envision a 31-21 OSU win.

Has anyone noticed that Anderson and Co. are actually showing confidence in the skill, talent, preparation and depth of this team? In previous years there has always been a mention of the lack of depth, focus during practice, strength, etc… Either the coaching staff is feeling some pressure or they may actually think we will be good this year. I’m always cautiously optimistic, which has failed me usually by game 2, but the confidence the staff appears to have in the team may actually warrant my optimism this year. Time will tell…

  11. The Rams have decent passing attack (245 ypg) coupled with solid rushing (218 ypg). Home field advantage.
We have a new QB. Probably have at least 1 int right there. Will see flashes of greatness where Luton stretches the field, but he won’t be constistant enough to finish with the win.
Would really like to see the special teams establish a short field (minimum 50 yard mark) for the offense on at least 2-3 punt/kickoff returns — if that doesn’t happen, gonna be a long day.

    Call me a pessimist, Rams 30 – Beavs 27

        • Yeah… for supposedly something he said 2.5 months ago.

It’s like they didn’t know he is a racist fuck and a white supremacist wannabe who can’t be one because his name sounds too ethnic… unless he maybe accepts White Jesus as his savior.

          Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.

          • “1) Hate.

If hate were the only reason, I’d stop being a leftist for this reason alone.

Almost twenty years ago, when I could not conceive of ever being anything but a leftist, I joined a left-wing online discussion forum.

Before that I’d had twenty years of face-to-face participation in leftist politics: marching, organizing, socializing.

In this online forum, suddenly my only contact with others was the words those others typed onto a screen. That limited and focused means of contact revealed something.

If you took all the words typed into the forum every day and arranged them according to what part of speech they were, you’d quickly notice that nouns expressing the emotions of anger, aggression, and disgust, and verbs speaking of destruction, punishing, and wreaking vengeance, outnumbered any other class of words.

One topic thread was entitled “What do you view as disgusting about modern America?” The thread was begun in 2002. Almost eight thousand posts later, the thread was still going strong in June, 2014.

Those posting messages in this left-wing forum publicly announced that they did what they did every day, from voting to attending a rally to planning a life, because they wanted to destroy something, and because they hated someone, rather than because they wanted to build something, or because they loved someone. You went to an anti-war rally because you hated Bush, not because you loved peace. Thus, when Obama bombed, you didn’t hold any anti-war rally, because you didn’t hate Obama.

I experienced powerful cognitive dissonance when I recognized the hate. The rightest of my right-wing acquaintances — I had no right-wing friends — expressed nothing like this. My right-wing acquaintances talked about loving: God, their family, their community. I’m not saying that the right-wingers I knew were better people; I don’t know that they were. I’m speaking here, merely, about language.”

            Go on………………..

            #partyofnegativityintoleranceandhate

          • Oh… and can you please link this supposed hate thread that garnered a whole 1.8 posts per day?

I mean, it must be serious if it has no link.

          • Are you tired of losing yet, you fucking loser?

I can’t believe you threw a patchouli-smelling fairy tale at me as if you thought it had any meaning beyond the mustard stains on the shirt of the dude who wrote it. You know what insignia that dude’s shirt had on it?

So, just for fun I went and looked up the only post on the interwebs with the title reported by the former leftist (not Bircher writing in Bircher-speak, now normalized and a part of newspeak). As you can see, it’s about eight thousand posts short of 8,000. And it’s quite diverse in points of view within the answers given.

            1) Hate.

            I mean… come on, man!

You’re going to tell me you couldn’t see this as some Bircher youth using Bircher language (tried and true for 70 years now) to fool you?

Are you embarrassed because it did fool you? Or are you the pusher man?

When will you stupids realize that the written word has meaning? Phrases derived from Bircher alt-meanings to certain words are not something any “leftist” (former or otherwise) will deploy when writing.

Beware the man of a single book.

          • Sorry… you lost me with the four tome epic on 10)

who the hell cares about some weird analogy that isn’t sourced or even realistic?

            Try again, loser.

          • I once hurt my toe, and my leftist friend laughed out loud. Therefore, it’s the milennials’ fault for my toe hurting because they made up achronyms that make me feel sad… and I will explain in 1000 words how this affects you… and then I will provide twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy screeds with 1000 words each which will be the definitive proof that you are wrong.

          • I told you all before that the schadenfreude would be something in which I would partake in the instance of this man and everything I told you about him.

You didn’t listen then. You won’t listen now. You’ll skip these very comments because they makes you have the sads in what is otherwise a neat deal of a topic.

            Go ahead.

Hide in your heads in your sand distractions. Even football is dying. What are you going to watch when that happens?

  12. Beavs 35-33 final. After a quick fast start we lead 28-8 at the half. Rams rally in the second against a tiring Beavs D, but missed the 2 point conversion for the tie and OT. At times they look formidable and others look completely lost, but they pull out the W.

  13. I’m going to stay with my overly positive approach to this season. It is understandable to view the current team as if they were a “slightly weak-minded, undersized little engine that could if it would only find it’s identity” team because of the conditioning of the Riley era.
However, I think this is the team that emerges as the Andersen model of toughness, length, speed, aggresiveness and mentally prepared to win. If they can show up at CSU ready to play, confidently execute and be punishing on defense, I don’t see how the Beavs lose. Altitude may be the biggest factor, but this is his deepest team and the defense will be subbing multiple guys at many spots anyway. Offense will know what it is, and be tough to slow down.

    Beavs win 41-24

  14. Statement game In a statement season for GA. With all the defections and roster movement this is his team now. CSU has already been seen mentioning Colorado game the following week.

I think this team is sneaky good with a ridiculous amount of athletisim. We win by 14. Good guys 38 -24

  15. My prediction is 31-34 beavers. Altitude, new stadium, and QB unknown will be the deciding factors. Our defense is good enough to keep us in games. Win turnover margin, keep the run and pass under 200 each for the defense, we win. If it’s a quick bang scoring game, we lose, if our offense can’t give our defense time to rest, we lose. First drive of the game for both teams will truly tell us how the game will go. In the past, it was if down by 2 touchdowns roll over and die. This team will fight and claw back. They’re hungry for a win.

  16. Hearing a lot about the Beavs run game wearing down CSU. Isn’t CSU going to stack the box and prevent that and force Luton to win the game? Seems like the logical game plan. And with Villy still blowing in practice, Collins hurt, a DT playing C and admitting he can’t snap to Luton, and Luton a complete unknown, I’m not feeling super confident in that, especially in altitude and a hostile environment. Do agree the Beavs will be better this year and could win this game but I think people are taking some things for granted. It will likely be a close game if we win.

    • I played center from 6th grade to my senior year of high school. I was small for center, but you do get a lot of help being the center. It’s about knowing each other’s strengths and weaknesses on the OL and working together as a group to figure what needs to be done to be successful. Whether it’s a punch block by a guard, or even the center delivering a punch block for the guard. They won’t know until game time of each game if they can manhandle the guy in front of them or if they’ll need help.

As far as shot gun snapping, Houston is right, it’s about reps in regards to snapping to the QB. Under center is the easiest transition when QB’s are rotated for a center because it’s the same motion and speed for each QB. When it comes to shotgun snaps, you have to be able to know the angle that you snap the ball to each QB. This becomes a muscle memory issue. If he can’t get his muscles to know the angle to snap to Luton vs Garrettson, then we will have a problem for the first 3-5 games and Houston’s mindset/psychie will be compromised.

      • Stopping the run isn’t as simple as just stacking the box. Especially when you have 3 backs who are all special and Johnson who is good too. If we create seams in the a and b gaps for Nall Tyner and AP that should setup the offense for a big day and make life easier for Luton in this one.

    • To be clear, he said that during the spring he tended to snap the ball at Luton’s knee and not in his gut. He’s talking about how he took a lot of reps to correct that.

Did we watch the same video? If so, it sounds like you’re reaching and hearing what you want to hear.

  17. I’m honestly not sure why everyone is so high on CSO. 7-6 in the MWC, and a bowl loss?

Beavs run all over them, and Luton plays well. Beavs by 17.

  18. 30-24 Beavs. OSU will fluctuate between up 3 to 10 points for most of the game if they play smart and have Nall and Tyner run hard. Some Cárdiac Beav moments in the 4th that make it nerve racking but the better team and more physical team wins. Beavs start 1-0.

  19. 42-28, Beavers. CSU defense inconsistent, and while motivated in home opener, have to contend with Nall, Pierce, Tyner, plus maybe Johnson and Tyler. How often do they face that kind of depth, when will they again this season?

Nall/Pierce/Tyner and ST good for 4 TDs, then OSU gets 2 TDs via passing (Togiai, Hodgins).

2 Luton INTs due to forcing to Togiai and/or throwing behind receivers on crossing routes.

1st game in new CSU stadium goes down as Beaver win, most of 41K go home disappointed.

  20. I am gonna jinx the whole thing. I think at the end of last season this team (allowing for the constant , yearly shuffle of departing and new players) tasted victory and learned a bit, how to win. Another thing is it seems to me that an O line that averages over 300lb has been missing before. That and the apparent depth in the Oline is a good thing. I think we can run the ball. Toss in a QB who for the first GA time, looks and seems to be, the part. And we seem to have a kicker who has range and skill. So I think we win. Dont think the score will be a lot, allowing for early season mistakes, etc. So something like 27-21….

  21. I am the #realsnowflake and I am a devout lefty. I love Hillary and Bernie. Went to Moscow for my honeymoon. I hate Amerika and want it to burn to the ground, and I am doing my part. ack, you’re my hero. Love ya, man.

    • To continue from above, since it looks like that’s what you’re doing. Are you suggesting that the white supremacists be tolerated? Because they always have been. They’ve always held rallys and there has almost always been counter protests at these. So expand your perspective and ask yourself what’s different recently? What’s going on that is giving the counter protest movement more energy?

      • Tolerance is not in my vocabulary. I told you I am a lefty. Burn the bitch down. What do we want? Dead cops! When do we want it? Now! Black live Matter!

        • I see. The bullshit false equivalency that BLM is basically the same as white supremacist groups. It’s probably not the first time you’ll be on the wrong side of history.

          • Like Che, BLM, and Stalin, you have no tolerance for different ideas. You are a good lefty bro. Burn the bitch down is very intolerant, as is wanting dead cops. But to us on the left that’s just fine, cause they are lefties. And we lefties stick together cause we are right, oops, I mean correct. Easy to e a super lib in Lilly white Bend, huh bro.

            Fuck me!

What kind of stupidity is this? This has to be the dumbest paragraph I’ve read in a long long time.

          • I can understand why you wouldn’t want to pay taxes.

You got nothing for an education.

But that’s kind of what we are talking about. Our (yours and mine) children don’t deserve to go out into the world as stupid as you. They deserve better than to be stuck in the WTF? box the world will stick them in if they eschew reality as you do.

          • Clarify for me what needs to be tolerated from the intolerant? Words? Behavior? Policy? And snowflake, I guess if I was in touch with something in a town with more racial minorities, It would be more difficult to be liberal? Why would be more difficult around minorities?

          • No clue on your last.

Snowflake needs to tell me how all the time I’ve spent in Detroit makes it hard for me to understand whatever the fuck snowflake thinks he thinks. I’m making lower margins but harvesting so much more belief in humankind. And that includes wandering out into the lakes and foruming with that fucking mess. Just because the whites fled inside 8 mile doesn’t mean they didn’t bring the same poor decisions that failed them within.

There are a couple PPPs that will fail, causing heartbreak. There are a lot of co-ops that will succeed, despite vultures circling.

Detroit is no longer the joke. The state outside Detroit and Ann Arbor is going to be in the joke column for a while. The Oopers are in denial more than anyone.

          • Hint: bendbeaver isn’t left of center and has admitted as much. Don’t let that stop wingnuts like snowflake. snowflake knows what everyone thinks without knowing.

    • Why would a leftist love Hillary? She’s right of center. She’s not as bad as her hubby. But she’s pretty bad with her “Third Way” rhetoric.

Besides, it turns out snowflakes are white… and can’t do anything positive (well… anything period) despite having all the power… besides whine about how the people who have zero power over them are making their lives a living hell.

It’s all the fault of millennials. The world sucks because of them.

  22. We have more talent than CSU. Having a new stadium doesn’t mean shit. They had a mediocre record last year against poor competition. CSU has no business beating a team from the PAC 12.

Beavs will win this easily. I’ll say 45-17.

  23. The only position I see CSU having an advantage is at QB. WR may be a wash but every other position is in favor of the Beavs.

Luton will make some mistakes but the D will bail him out. RB will be too much to handle and will wear down CSU. 27 – 20 good guys.

  24. Colorado switched QBs mid year and after Nick Stephens took over full time starting duties in October, their lowest scoring output was 37. He returns as well as their best receivers.
For this reason and considering our secondary seems to be one of our bigger questions marks (now Dunn is out due to not having enough high school credits completed?) I’m going with a CSU win.
    CSU 42
    OSU 28

(Hope I’m way off base here, but I think this game will be sobering for Beavernation)

  25. Anybody else notice how last week, GA was saying this years team he feels the most confident about of all of his teams at this point in camp, but then this week he changed his tune to “we’re nowhere near game ready”
My guess is he started reviewing CSU film between that time to develop a gameplan and thought, “oh shit…..why did we move this game to week 0?”

    • And another note we have played small centers at OSU. Chris Gibson played at 6’3″ 279, 3 year starter and a couple of all conference teams.

      • His head is huge, and that probably does contribute to the effect. His arms look really small as do his shoulders. And he’s a converted DT (wasn’t he also a walk-on?). I just don’t see how this is our C in year 3. Oh well. We’ll see in a week.

        • Short arms are a concern for tackles for sure, Center as the “qb” of the line is less about sheer size and a smaller, mobile SMART center can be very very successful…

My concern would be more about the lack of experience. Sumner is going to need to help direct the rest of the lineman… so it makes me nervous that he is the least experienced of them. He seems to be the only option though…

        • He was a good to great prospect out of HS. He should have been OL from the start, but we seemed to never have any DTs in the previous regime. And once we got a couple, they got Tuerked.

    • Based on the way he looks in that picture he does look small but I’m hoping it’s something like the picture(s) on the web of a dead wild boar that looks huge.

So while I have that page up I click on Good ol’ dump and find the following: Daddy, why’s my sister named Florence? Father: Because we conceived her in Florence, Italy. Child: Thanks dad! Father: You’re welcome Backseat.

The internet never ceases to ………. me. :-)

    • He’s listed as 6’2″ 296. As to the image, cell phone cameras have about a 35mm focal length which would be considered fairly wide angle. A person would have to be somewhat close to the subject at that focal length to fill up that much of the picture (assuming it wasn’t zoomed or cropped). There can be a fair amount of distortion in that case. I’ll reserve judgement until I see him play.

  26. Why would a video from 2 weeks ago describing an issue from over a month ago that is now resolved make you worried about Houston’s snaps???

Interviewer asks how naming Luton the starter helps the center QB relationship. Sumner had a very nice answer about how he it allowed him to concentrate on snapping to the taller Luton and get that muscle memory down… Seems like a positive, not something to be concerned about…

Offenses dominate for the most part, but Beavs can control clock and tempo with their running game. Beaver defense finally gets a stop or two in the fourth quarter to seal it…

    42 – 32, Beavers win!

      • I think you mean take the under? Although under zero isn’t really a thing…

I don’t bet, but I will predict ZERO bad snaps for Sumner against CSU.

Also the picture you posted above… still doesn’t show his legs or someone next to him for proportion and… something is weird about the pic, either his head is HUUUGE (Like SPUTNIK!), or they were using some funky lens

  27. My kids got Sumners autograph……he is not small….he may not be very tall, but he’s a thick kid…

Anyway, with the huge cranium should be a huge brain…..Center is about football smarts and leverage…you don’t have to be a monster.

My concern remains our ability to stop CSU’s offense….losing a corner who was a potential starter is not good news….there is talent there, and I think it’s a mistake to assume because they are not a power 5 school that they are lesser competition…..

  28. Names kendrick lamar….ive heard of him, but that’s all I know.

I almost feel bad for Mike……almost…..the way he left last time left a bad taste in my mouth……he was tenured, and he couldn’t wait to get outa Corvallis…..the Mr rogers thing is BS…..he’s just like the rest of em…..and now he’s in a place where he better contend for a natty……aint happenin

The over/under for cornholers is 7 wins……their schedule is pretty soft…..aside from Ohio st, wisky, and a few other big 10 opponents…..I’m betting he’s gone after this season or next

    • Did he hurt your feelings by leaving town? Grow up. Most of you wanted him gone and I’m sure he felt pressure to move on. So he did. Quit whining about it. Be grateful he built Oregon State into a respectable program.

      • He didn’t build shit. Pettibone did more building than he ever did. DE did all the heavy lifting and left a legacy that would have been complete in 2006 or so if Bike Smiley were even remotely ambitious in the builder realm.

He took an 8-5 program and made it a 7-6 program… with a coupe four loss years at his apex. He should have never been rehired since he ditched OSU. I don’t blame him for that. When the NFL calls, and you have aspirations to coach on the highest level, you answer that call. But the only way he gets to see our games live is by him buying a ticket. DE deserves the same.

        • Thank you for your kind words regarding my coaching awesomeness! I would send you an autographed picture or some 90’s era Beaver football memorabilia but I am well aware that you have plenty.

It is especially gratifying that this high praise is coming from the the most prolific and knowledgeable, on any topic, poster that this site has ever seen. Again.. thank you so much. JB

          • Any topic?

The topics we’ve covered on this blog over the last decade amount to nothing. Yet you’re willing to call it on knowledge? That’s a poor assessment. It’s a good thing you don’t work in the education sector.

But I get it. I’m a philomath, and that bugs people for whatever reason. I really don’t care that it does, and haven’t since I was 16. Everyone else can go hang out in their cliques of cool. I’ll take a book.

  29. Question….

So is Villamin gonna finally put it together? The kid is a physical freak, but he doesn’t have very good hands…….sounds like they are trying to build his confidence, but at this point is he just who he is? If he could take the next step, our offense could be exponentially more dangerous…….my gut says more of the same…

  30. Eggers with some info on CSU, including their schedule:

“Before the Rams open MWC play against Hawaii on Sept. 30, they will take on a pair of Pac-12 opponents — Oregon State and Colorado — followed by a home date against FCS Abilene Christian. Then comes a Sept. 16 visit to Alabama to face the team ranked No. 1 in the preseason polls.”

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/369643-251767-osu-just-part-of-challenges-facing-colorado-state-in-2017

  31. I know it was for their brand new stadium, but 21k for a scrimmage?

That said, they gave up 61 to the Vandals in a bowl loss…..that’s sayin a lot to me….the more I think about it, no matter we’re on the road in CSU’s christening of their stadium, we should impose our will….we will give up points, but we SHOULD be able to outpace CSU.

    I can’t wait!!

  32. The worst case scenario list for game 1:
Multiple bad snaps from Houston lead to turnovers
Villamin disappears again, Togiai is a great practice player but disappears during the game
Luton is proven as an int machine with poor reads and late throws
D-Line can’t stop the run and gets no pressure
CSU stacks the box and Nall can’t get out of the backfield
Offense goes 3 and out multiple times in the first half
Altitude catches up to an overworked defense and they crumble
Beavs get throttled again on the National stage by another non Power5 team on the rise and CSU wins in a beatdown in front of a full house

I must repeat, if this were another Riley team going in with a first year qb, etc, these things would be more than likely to happen. However, GA is a difference making coach and the Beavs are really close. A team that is all in on GA’s style will not get rolled by CSU, but could possibly win in a rout.
    The Oline will prove itself,
Nall will break through even if they stack the box,
Togiai will be a difference maker,
Luton will be better than expected,
Beavs defense will be lights out and will overwhelm CSU in second half.

I agree that there are a lot of questions that need answered before game 1. I expect a lot of those questions to be settled early in the game and we will be surprised at the efficiency, preparation, execution and toughness of this group. Nearly every publication and prognostication has the Beavs at 5th in the North. No respect for what GA is doing, and the entire team will have a chip on its collective shoulder throughout the season. Beavs will finish in the toip 3 in the North and go bowling.

    • “…the entire team will have a chip on its collective shoulder throughout the season.”
We’ve seen, with baseball, what a chip on the shoulder can lead to, I think you make a good point and GA is the kind of coach who can use this factor. I doubt Riley would even consider the possibility.

Interesting sidelight, Eggers mentions that the Rams like the Beavs, lost three starting OL guys from last year. The difference? They didn’t lose their center! I think Sumner is gonna be OK, but it would be hard to bet against angry and expect a perfect game.

    • Let’s be honest with ourselves, Sumner is probably too frail to get the ball all the way back to the QB in the shotgun. Is it legal to headbutt the ball during a snap? Using his giant melon head is probably the only hope he has.

  33. I’m starting to come around on thinking the Beavs win this game, maybe not convincingly, but by imposing their will early with run game, and controlling the clock…..I’m not gonna over analyze it…..we SHOULD have rushing attack that a defense like CSU’s can’t stop…..their D is returning 8 starters I believe….this D that gave up 61 to the Vandals in a lesser bowl game.

So that, and we are much deeper this season…..no more getting gassed late in games, or late in the season…..we have solid talent backing up solid talent for the most part.

    41-31 Beavs

    • I think the Bears should have the strength and talent advantage to overcome a motivated, scrappy CSU team…if the game is called well with a run emphasis, OSU really ought to be able to control the clock and wear them down. Yeah, OSU’s team may have to adjust to altitude, but with at least 3, maybe 4+ RBs to use, 4 of which – Nall, Tyner, Pierce, Johnson – could have legitimate shots at NFL camps/careers, I think OSU just has the advantage in talent, size, physicality.

  34. My prediction is a shoot out. But with us having superior players and in my opinion multiple NFL guys on both sides of the ball and a qb that I think will exceed expectations we get the win 38-24. I also think we will have a hungry defense that is wanting to prove everyone else wrong about them. Major chip on this teams shoulder.

  35. What kind of chip on the shoulder are we talking about…. chocolate, wood, Kelly, California Highway Patrol….? That will dictate how pent-up these guys are.

  36. So is this the 5th staight year with these unis? Pretty sure they were released in 2013. Beavs overdue for new unis. Used to be about every 3 years the unis were new. Expect we see new designs by next year. Would hope we get a decent black helmet next time and a few fresh touches. Maybe incorporate 60% of the upcoming Minnesota game uni inspiration into the next designs with about 10-12 combos we might see in games with a touch of the 2010 Giant Killer inspiration (15%) and the last (25%) split between Fiesta Bowl Beavs and an Andersen power Oregon State program inspiration.

    • Yeah, Oregon State due for some new threads. This current iteration is a C+ in my book. The new 11 Strong uni looks good and was well received just like the 2010 Giant Killer unis. OSU makes the mistake of using their best and most loved designs for only a game or perhaps two. Get good elements like both these designs have and develop them into a full set for home and away that all look just about as nice as eachother. Definitely doable. I would take the core of the Minny uni and develop a Men of Iron theme for our next threads. 3 main helmets, tops and bottoms that can be mixed and mashed and an alternate 4th helmet of either battleship gray or silver to fit a Men of Iron theme. Goes well with the physical identity Andersen is building.

        • Sidelines you can be more rowdy and there’s a crapload of screens with everything on. Upstairs at Deschutes they have a couple screens and will probably have the Beavs game on. The food there is better and there’s carpeting, so it’s for the more refined person.

          • Oh, I forgot McMenamins is having it on in the secondary room (not the movie theater, the big room next to it). That’s organized by Beav alums and they usually raffle stuff off. Usually a $5 donation or something. That’s fun, too, unless the Beavs are getting stomped, then you start thinking a funeral was a better idea.

          • Good fish and chips and pizza when I’ve been there. It was also more of a comparison to food at Sidelines. And I have an ’09 Abyss that disagrees with you.

          • That’s fun, too, unless the Beavs are getting stomped, then you start thinking a funeral was a better idea.

            So… wear black?

Speaking of good Deschutes beers, where is Crux on tap? You almost need a damn reservation to get into the place any more.

          • I’ve just seen Crux Pilsner and nothing else on taps all around. It’s my overall favorite brewery in town and I think that’s the word of mouth, based on how busy it can get. The yard is like a beach scene, minus the water.

          • As I said to each their own. I’ll take Sidelines pizza over Deschutes and the burgers at Sidelines are some the of the best in town. Not too mention with an 11:30 am kickoff you can get a quality breakfast at Sidelines.

As for their beer, again. To each their own. I’ve never been a fan. Agree on Crux though, best beer in town for sure.

          • As for other places to get Crux, Brother John’s will usually have a couple on tap and so will the Pourhouse. But it is random.

  37. I don’t recall a discussion of last years biggest problems. Below is my list in order:

1- Poor passing and three QBs played. (hopefully Luton is improvement)

2- Poor DL performance. I think we were very low rank in terms of sacks and hurries. (TBD)

3- Lots of injuries to LBs leading to inexperience players on field. (should be improved)

4- Turnovers. Not sure how we ranked, but I recall some at bad times. (Improved? TBD)

5- Missed field goals. I recall a couple. (hopefully improved)

6- Offensive line depth and performance. (hopefully improved)

What did I miss? With all that, we still lost a couple games by only one TD.

    Comments? Insults? Threats of violence?

    • That’s why I feel so good about the CSU game. We might have the best backfield in the country.

Both our lines should have significant size advantages.

Even if Luton struggles we should be able to ground and pound them.

Idk, I haven’t felt like this about the beavs since 2000. Defense has the potential to be aggressive/nasty and the o could be explosive by mid year if everyone else stays healthy.

      • More like 1999. We’re a great group of potential. We need some time in the pot to marry all the flavors.

Less deep and late season opponents will not like playing against us.

  38. dux trying not to show everyone how shitty they are: uo had fans in their stadium yesterday for a scrimmage but then cancelled at the last minute: “It’s just a little sudden change. In football, you have little sudden changes,” Taggart said. “You never know. Make sure our guys are never too comfortable.”

  39. One factor you bastages have not considered in your predictions, the beavergopher in da house factor. So far when yours truly is physically present at a Beav game, da Beavs are a remarkable
1-9. The wife and I will be in Ft. Collins. Sorry, but this does not bode well.

  40. There are a lot of factors NOT in the Beavers favor:

Road Game – Have not won a game on the road since 2014
CSU has SR QB with game experience
    OSU has new QB
Elevation 5000 FT (this is a bigger deal than most think)

I REALLY want to see us come out and ground and pound. I think that is the best way to control the tempo, clock, and the crowd. If we try to go too much up tempo and throw the ball too much we could get run out of the stadium. Fingers are crossed but a lot of factors as stated above are not in our favor.

    I hope I’m wrong but CSU 38 OSU 28

  41. RE: OSU defense, while there may not be as much DL depth as anyone would like without Evans, I think Vakameilalo and Aydon will get plenty of push. The DL is supposed to be more focused on containment and creating plays for LBs with less DL “freelancing” this year.

LB corps is pretty deep and will be (finally) healthy, with some speed.

The D has a “30-30” goal this year for sacks and takeaways, and I think they’ll do enough at CSU to help out an offense that can realistically use 3 – 5 RBs.

    • If we use those RB A LOT and control the clock that would make me more optimistic. I hope your analysis is more accurate than mine.

    • I didn’t listen to all of it. He mentioned that the team is relieved to hear that he feels they are “ready” to play a game now that camp is winding down.
Really not much else that I was able to listen to.
Saw the injury report. Not too bad, with the biggest absence being Seth, as we already knew.
Hopefully a nearly full strength Pac12 D Line is able to handle a full strenth mountain west OLine, and vice verse. If our lines can at least match their’s, then I feel like our skill guys can lead us to a W. But that’s a big if.

  42. I feel like not having Seth for this game AND neither Evans or Garcia for this game will hurt. Seth is not only a good player who had some pretty bug 3rd down grabs last year but one of the emotional leaders on the squad. His somewhat irrational confidence ( he believes he is great not just good) seems like it would be infectious and spread to the team which is big in what will be a tough road environment.

I think Evans and Garcia were going to be the biggest play-makers on the d line. The rest of the guys are solid and will be ok but not game changing IMO. Unless we find ways to bring pressure with the OLB’s or Titus finds another gear off the edge I think Stevens will have too much time to throw and that could be the difference. The only bright side is the Rams managed to give up 61 points in their bowl game to Idaho. Mcgiven and the boys better have been ALL over that film.

    • Seth will be missed most for his blocking as a receiver. Great downfield blocker.

Have you ever seen Evans or Garcia play? Evans is based on him playing at a freshman at MSU correct? Garcia is a complete unknown as I don’t believe he’s touched the field outside of practice as a beav. So dudes just don’t pan out.

Sucks to not have Evans, but for the first time in many years we have 3-4 legit DT’s, one of whom will probably be the best DT we’ve ever had.

      • D – No the Evans and Garcia love is just based on film and hype. Both guys seemed to be more disruptive than anyone else on the roster. Elu is a beast but more in the sense of being good at what DT’s do. Free up backers behind them. I don’t think he has the athleticism to impact a game in the backfield the way Evans potentially could. BUT I would LOVE to be proven wrong on that front.

I think if we can find someone among the defensive front that can cause havoc in the backfield AND occupy leverage then this d can be elite. Right now I think that’s the missing piece.

        • Bright was in the backfield a ton last year before he got injured. If not for some whiffs he might’ve had 8 sacks in 8 games. I think we’ll see Failigua, Prichard and Napolean causing some havoc off the end. Ricky Liuchan looked like a beast in high school. Same with Lamone Williams. Seems those cats are due to start making plays.

I think we’re going to generate the most sacks from LB this year though. Sounds like a lot of funky formations being toyed with to cause confusion and mismatches with length and speed.

          • Read where they watched the whiffs and saw all the sacks/TFLs they left on the table. I think they will definitely improve BTLOS this year.

Liuchan is allegedly up to 260+, which sounds big for him. Hoping he maintained his speed.

Agree on expecting most sacks from LBs. DL is supposed to do less free lancing this year and contain and create opportunities for LBs.

Also, I think we’ll see good game scheming and attack from Clune, who will have a healthy defense to work with. Not that he ever used that as an excuse, but he’ll definitely have more options this year.

  43. It’s crazy how few seniors are on our Offensive 2 deep. Villy, Hawkins and that’s about it. Porebski on special teams too.
Defense has several more, especially at DE.
This team should be pretty experienced next year, as long as they can plug a few holes on D for 2018

  44. I got on the AD’s ass last week for their subpar work promoting the program and the crappy family weekend product, but I have to give credit where credit is due. The school really put their best foot forward and took advantage of the eclipse weekend. We ended up camping in a field connected to a farm over by the Benton County fair grounds. We rode our bikes the short distance up to campus on a bike trail to check out the place on Sunday. They had several exhibits on display, apparently there was live music, which we missed. they also screened a movie(apollo 13) and all I can say is the campus was in mid season form. The grounds were in great shape, the weather was perfect and the people were all really friendly (except for the crusty old guy showing off his meteorites in the MU, he was definitely the “get off my lawn” guy)

Anyway, Corvallis did a great job hosting all of the visitors this weekend, and we met people from all over the West coast, from BC to LA.

  45. So CSU played one Pac-12 team last year and got beat pretty bad. The funny thing (not funny haha) is the same team beat us even worse. Now, I know the Beavs have improved since that game, but I suspect CSU has as well. Have the Beavs improved more than CSU? Who knows? There is no game evidence to go on. I fully expect this game to be close, and there will be some WTF moments by the Beavs (there always are this early in the season), but I’ll predict a W by the Beavs with help from Choukair: 30-27

  46. They also lost a close one to Minnesota but hung pretty close with Boise on the road. We played like trash against Boise at home but kept it respectable. We should get a good indicator of early improvement for both squads after this one.

    • Thanks for posting.
On the sports psychology thought, good to hear (around 24:40) that the SA’s were given “something to read” on managing nerves during the transition from practice to actual games.

Also noted the credit GA gives to Vince and the support staff in the area of recruiting; overall, GA seems to be the type who puts effort into developing subordinates. He often mentions the job done by position coaches and coordinatiors.

      • I had mentioned that he recruited two deeps at almost every position last class in another thread. Thats a pretty good job by the staff. I think andersen is very hardworking and creative finding players. For instance a late qualifier like montibon.

  47. Saturday’s game is to be broadcast on CBS Sports, not widely available from what I can discern.
Who is gonna post a stream from our Ukranian buddies for those of us who don’t have a high dollar cable package?
Am i gonna have to visit a Buffalo Wild Wings Saturday morning?? Are they even open that early?

    • I don’t have cbs sports network either. I did download the app which then made me create a Hulu account and still can’t find the game…anybody have some advice on how to get the game streamed at home?

      • I figured it out. I went cheap and only did the video library when I signed up for Hulu. I had to up it to the week free trial to get live streams. I watched the angels live tonight on my phone. Now I just need to figure out how to get the beavs game outside at my BBQ. Fire tv will be here Friday! I have a standby at a neighbors house that has Comcast just in case. ?

    • Seems like signing up for a trial of Hulu Live might be the best option to then sign into CBSSN live streaming. But, not sure if it will be available.

I have to say again, Larry Scott and his Pac 12 Network sure suck! The Big Ten and SEC networks are available on most all the streaming options (Playstation Vue, YouTube TV, Sling, DirectTV Now, Hulu Live…) Stupid Pac 12 is only available as an extra package on Sling, which is one of the worst services.

      • I saw a link that if you get a Youtube Live acct, you can stream CBS Sports. It was on the Ram Nation message boards somewhere where they linked a site that tells you where you can watch the games based on the channel it’s on.

        • Perhaps, though I don’t see YouTube TV as a listed TV Provider here: http://www.cbssports.com/watch/cbssportsnetwork/

Besides the dumpy Pac-12 Network, the other problem is streaming services have very haphazard coverage of the major networks (ABC, Fox, …) And that’s where most of the good Pac 12 games are shown. It depends service by service on what market area they designate your home, and which networks they have worked out deals for in that market. Then, you better hope your ISP geolocates you in your home zipcode, and not in a different market. Over the air with an antenna is great if you get reception. But, I don’t and am on the east coast. So, I have to rely on a streaming service.

I have read that even though a lot of streaming services don’t carry ABC or Fox in most markets, you may be able sign into that network’s sports app (WatchESPN, Fox Sports Go, CBS Sports) using your Sling, PlayStation, Hulu, etc. account. Haven’t tried it yet, though.

The live TV streaming market place just sucks. The only handy thing is shutting it off after football season is over.

    • For those with Comcast, CBS Sports is part of their channel listings, but if you’re using a “borrowed” acct to log in from home, it looks like that won’t work. It says it’s only available for in home viewing, so they must track the IP address to make sure it belongs to the acct trying to stream the channel.

I’ll test it out tonight after work

    • Its odd that the first game of the NCAA football season is on a broadcast that is not widely available. There is only what, 5 games Saturday? You think they’d each be widely available…

I know national interest in OSU at CSU is non-existent, but still, its the first game of the season and features a PAC school….

  48. I’m starting to think the Beavs win. Team is seemingly pretty healthy and attitude seems top notch. It’s all about Luton in my mind. If he does a good job, the team wins. If he’s a turnover machine, we lose.

    • It’s the old, “Let’s see what they look like when they run out on the field,” aspect. We’ll know on game day if they’re ready to play.

  49. I got a good laugh when coach said “Perfect, we just won’t block the first snap” when referring to Jake’s comment about liking to take a hit in order to settle in. @23.30

  50. I think GA is dialed in and this team is ready. I really like listening to him in these type of interviews. He has a go-to list of cliche quotes but does exude a passion and love for the team and the guys as individuals as well as the coaching staff.
Perhaps he has a difficult time identifying QBs but it sounded like a pretty good line of argument that Luton wasn’t just GA’s find if Dennis Erickson was the first source for a second opinion. It makes me more hopeful and lends credence to how Luton was locked in so early on last year as a main target.

Beavs win 42-24 and look good doing it!

      • I didn’t watch the interview. Did Erickson say that? Why didn’t Utah take him? Seems like the best JC QB ever would be an upgrade at Utah

        • Sorry that was me being a wiseass about hoping Erickson said Luton was the best JC QB ever. I highly doubt he said that. Didn’t mean to cause confusion.

    • My favorite quote from Dennis Erickson in regards to QB’s is when he met Jonathan Smith for the first time.

DE: “Nice to meet you Jonathan, are you one of our equipment managers?”
JS: “No, I’m your starting Quarterback.”

We all know how well that turned out for the Beavs…

      • It turned out well, but not because of Smith, in my opinion. The best WR corp in the nation, a great OL, and a dominant D made Smith seem a lot better than he was.

        • Smith type of play is exactly what we need out of the QB position. Limit mistakes, and take advantage of the opponent’s mistakes.

  51. I find this really interesting, from the pregame notes on CSU.

“We Have To Get Stronger” —

Head coach Gary Andersen has often used those words as a goal in describing the Beaver football program. There has been definite strides in the weight room since Andersen’s arrival in conjunction with head strength and conditioning coach Evan Simon.

Entering this season the stats indicate a major transformation.

Position Lift Change from 8/1/16 to 8/1/17

    Def. Line Squat/Bench +30 lbs/+31.4 lbs

    Outside LBs Squat/Bench +77 lbs/+38.5 lbs

  52. I loved this from the official pregame notes.

  53. Just wondering how it works w.r.t. using the taxi team. When the taxi team is emulating the upcoming opponent do they practice using full contact? How many plays are ran? How many days before the game does this happen? And any other bits of info I haven’t thought to ask about….

    TIA

Obviously the boredom is getting to me and I’m trying to find a topic to discuss in order to kill some time AND to become better informed.

  54. I read how CSU funded their new $220 mm stadium through the sale of state revenue bonds based on future earnings from the stadium. Is that not an option in the state of Oregon? If a non power 5 can get funded for a new stadium, it seems OSU should be able to complete Reser. I haven’t lived in Oregon in about 20 years and I’ll admit I don’t know how bond funding works in the state. It does appear OHSU recently received bond funding for construction purposes though.

  55. Are we doing week 0 predictions?
Only 5 games to choose from.
    I’ve got:
Oregon State at Colorado State (CSU)
    Portland State at BYU (BYU)
    Hawaii at UMass (UMass)
    USF at SJSU (USF)
Stanford vs Rice (Stanford)(Neutral site/Sydney, Australia)

  56. Snell is terrible, dominates the whole show, goes first ever time and then always has last word. Wish they would get somebody else on this Talkin’ Beavs show. almost too hard to watch, but your desperate for coverage.

  57. Even worse is the 620am “Home of the Beavers” in Portland. Those jokers did a pocket schedule of the Beavs and had zero enthusiasm about the entire Beav schedule. They get animated about anything UNike especially their recruiting and new coaches. But when it comes to Beaver stuff, they down-play and pretty much apologize for wasting air-time talking about Beavs. Even worse is they are going to be on campus during the season for pregame shows and pretty much picked against Beavs ahead of time. Travis and Chad in the afternoon are as bad as the dopes on 1080. Portland radio is all Ducks and OSU doesn’t do much about it and hasn’t for years. GA needs to win, win big, win multiple Civil Wars, get to and win the Rose Bowl in order to change the perception asap. Go Beavs

    • I don’t even think all of that will change anything. PK has way more influence in the Portland area than anyone associated with OSU. The Ducks are the darlings of Portland and they always will be. Just look at Baseball. We won back to back NCs, but once the Ducks got a team again they became the focus of the media, and Beavers get dragged through the mud to sabotage another run for the NC.

    • Sprague again misinterprets/misunderstands what one of his radio guests says in an interview on his show. Says Klune basically doesn’t expect Craig Evans, so Sprague them tells listeners Craig Evans won’t ever play for the Beavs.
Very much the opposite of what I’ve been told. He will receive his final grade from Summer term in the next week, and could be eligible to practice during the Portland State week. Not a guarantee that we will ever see him, but the pending piece is that grade, which nobody will know until it’s official.

Oneoldbeav pointed out a few weeks back how Sprague butchered a quote from another guest (i can’t remember the context now, but BS was way off base)

        • Klune was on Sprague’s radio show either yesterday or the day before. I’m sure a podcast is out there, but i can’t look for it right now

          • There is a podcast on 1080 the fan app for those with smart phones(upper right lines) drop menu comes up, left side podcast, click Dirt & Sprague, and it’s in there. I don’t listen to them on a regular basis for any of them, but they will podcast it with the title of the segment, “DC Coach Klune” or something like that for each guest. I watch for those and listen to them a day or 2 later as the case may be.

          • In case there’s anyone else out there besides me who couldn’t get the Klune interview to play, here’s a link that worked for me.

The Klune interview starts at 12:18 and he talks about Evans @ 16:22. You have to click on the orange V in order to get it to play.

            https://d3efjls8gnbg8i.cloudfront.net/1641870/120256219.mp3?rhihttphost=1080thefan.hosted.cx

I’ve never heard the two hosts before but FWIW in the 20 minutes or so that I listened I heard them say nothing that I thought was out of line re the Beavs. Like I said, FWIW

          • Around 16:00 min mark on the DamPodcast from Machado that angry posted, Sprague mentions that Klune was righting off Evans for this year. Machado agrees with him to forget about Evans ever playing for the Beavs.
Nicebeaver, what gives? You have any updates about Evans?

          • Just what I posted above. Waiting for grades.
Not sure if Sprague is writing him off based on Klune’s comments alone, or some other info he has, but I don’t see how Klune’s comments would lead one to jump to the conclusion that Craig Evams will never play for us.
But we’ve seen this from Sprague before, so I don’t really trust him anyway.

  58. I’d like to throw a few bills on the Beavs. How do I go about this?
I just don’t think they should be 4 point dogs. I think this is a pick em game at worst.

Any sites where you can throw down a few bills and if you win cash out and close your account? Many of the sites don’t let you withdraw money, which is annoying.

  59. Is it me or does Colorado State seem uber confident for a middle of the road Mountain West Conference team whose defense got boat raced by Idaho? If I was a betting man I would put $100 on the beavs to win this game or at least cover the spread.

    • Well, to be fair, they did go to a bowl game the last 4 years. The Beavers haven’t gone to a bowl game in the last 3 years and have finished near the bottom of the PAC12. So if I was CSU I might be fairly confident about this game also. Let’s just hope the Beavers can prove them wrong.

  61. The CSU D-line is rather small. 270 for biggest starter? Imagine Lavaka blasting these guys.

CSU lost 3 from last years O-line.

CSU lost their leading tackler on D.

Their starting RB weighs 175??? Crush him.

    Fours sophs start on D.

  62. This is from the official game notes, I love the sound of it.

    • GA has commented that the Beavs are there physically and now look the part as a D1 big boy football team. He seems to be pretty plesased with all of the progress in the weight room. Let’s hope it translates to victories.
CSU isn’t Boise St coached by C Peterson, and GA is a different type of coach, this team is ready to bully some Rams around. I want the defense to be a dominant, physically bulllying and aggressive defense. Make sure they remember the day they played the Beavers!!
Beavs 42-24 and look dynamic doing it!

    • 2017 ad campaign:

      “Not your mothers’ Beavers.”

Get it? A generation ago, the Beavers were not this strong…so if your mother went to OSU, she would not have seen players like this…

  63. I have no fucking clue as to how they’re going to do. All I’m hoping for is they aren’t an embarrassment, which I don’t think they will be.

    Go Beavs!

  64. Oregon St. needs to represent the Pac-12 well to open the 2017 season. Excited to see our stable of backs give them a myriad of styles to deal with. Luton if he can complete 60% of his passes should be able to provide enough game management and balance to maintain drives and keep possession as Beavs will need to do. Plenty of 4-6 yard runs on 1st down will be key to put the Beavs in good position.

Nall, Luton, Tyner, Pierce and Togiai need to be leaders and all work in united purpose to bring home a must have ‘W’ if team wants a good shot at 6 wins this year. Hoping Hodgins shows he has good hands and will fight to make catches.

    Go get 1-0 Beavs!

  65. PHIL STEELE REPORT:

Last met in 1975. Just the 4th Power 5 team to visit Fort Collins since 2004 (not including TCU/Utah; both in Mountain West) with Colorado State 0-3 including an OT loss vs Minnesota. Rams are 20-3 in home openers including 4 straight wins. While Colorado State lost their bowl, they do have 14 returning starters and are #22 in my Experience Chart and Oregon State did not make a bowl and are #31. Colorado State has the added edge of being in the altitude all month while Oregon State lost at Colorado in 2016, 47-6. Oregon State has lost 13 road games in a row and Colorado State is 6-2 their last 8 at home. This is the Rams first game in their brand new stadium and they will have their loudest home crowd in years. My computer calls for a 6 point Rams win and I agree.

    • I know you say this guy is usually right, but the logic and stuff there don’t make sense.
If Luton is any good the Beavs should win. If he stinks they’ll lose.

      • I don’t say he’s right all the time, but he is widely regarded as THE expert on college football and his prediction magazine has been proven the most accurate 19 straight years. So even if I don’t agree with his opinion, I respect it enough to share it each week.

Is Oregon State better this year? Yes. The problem is their schedule is a lot harder. For example, Colorado State is expected to be a double digit win team this year. They’re expected to beat out Boise State in their division. That should red flag you right away. He has the Beavers’ schedule rated as the sixth most difficult in the country this year. Look below:

After running through the power ratings in the magazine this year, the conclusions are:

Oregon State will be a favorite only three times, a heavy favorite only in one (Portland State), and minimal favorite in the other two (Minnesota, @ California). They will be slight underdogs in four games (@ Colorado State, Colorado, Arizona State, @ Arizona), and heavy underdogs in the other five games (@ Washington State, Washington, @ USC, Stanford, @ Oregon).

Conclusion: Oregon State MUST defeat Portland State, Minnesota, and Cal, and can only afford one loss between the four games dealing with the Colorado and Arizona schools if they want to secure a bowl. You do not want to HAVE to pick up a win from the heavy underdog five games listed last as its a tough sell. (Not saying it can’t happen…)

The power rating algorithm for each team the Beavers are facing looks like this (bear in mind this reveals the record if chalk happens concerning favorites each week):
        Colorado State (10-2), wins conference
        Portland State (FCS), no projection
        Minnesota (6-6)
        Washington State (8-4)
        Washington (12-0), wins division
        USC (12-0), wins conference
        Colorado (6-6)
        Stanford (10-2)
        California (2-10)
        Arizona (3-9)
        Arizona State (5-7)
        Oregon (9-3)

Oregon State does not face its first team with a projected losing record until November. The middle of the schedule is brutal, so they need to make hay in September and in November to be bowl eligible. I would consider seven wins outstanding THIS year considering the hole they’re trying to dig themselves out of.

        • ?

I hope he doesn’t sell himself as the most accurate for 19 straight years. That would be a lie, and I would have to dismiss anyone who claimed such a thing… especially in the stat world.

He is the most accurate over a 19 year span. Supposedly that arbitrary number is chosen because year one was so good. So a 20 year span would be competitive, An 18 year span would kill his claim.

And that status comes from one source (in the beginning).
          http://preseason.stassen.com/prediction-accuracy/

Note how he doesn’t get the nod for all time because the data sets don’t allow him to compete beyond a certain year. Notice also that only magazines are considered.

It would be fair to say he is more commonly accurate predictively over a chosen span and among those who publish hard copy material.

He gets blown away by blogs… and the common man who looks at his numbers and thinks… “cool.”

      • Biggest positional matchup advantage is our untested QB/WR corps vs. CSU’s DB’s? If their secondary is THAT bad and Luton is the key for us in this matchup, I like our chances.

      • Almost every category he has the Beavs with the edge, except for kicker, where he gives a big edge to the rams. That’s what pushes his point total toward the home team. If, as he predicts, the Beavs have the statistical margin in every other category, it should be the Beavs. I don’t see the kicker being that big of an edge if the Beavs offense and defense take care of business. And let’s not forget no one has seen our kicker.

          • Yes, they have a slight edge there, but the Beavs off v their def has much larger margins.

For instance…Take the first line of each…
Beavs pass off v ram dbs +1.40…
Ram pass off v Beavs db +0.61…

That’s a delta of almost +0.80 leaning toward the Beavs passing offense

The offense will touch the ball a hell of a lot more than the kicker.

        • I agree. IMHO, putting that much weighting on a single player who supplies two data points is unwise for this matrix. Unless Steele is a duckfan, in which case, I don’t care about his matrix’ confidence interval.

    • Listen to the podcast of last nights primetime with Isaac and suke on 1080 the fan; they had their first segment on the show with their weekly guest by a guy named Dave Bartoo; who has a college football matrix that he’s been doing since 2005. I honestly think his predictions and matrix is more accurate week to week based on tangibles. Basically he looks at coach effect, analyzes recruiting classes and whether a coach gets out less, what they projected or more than their stars indicated. He said the beavers offense matches up better than the CSU defense and CSU offense matches better than beavers defense. He said take Oregon state to cover and over on the 58 points combined.

      http://www.1080thefan.com/audio-channel/podcasts

Hour one of last nights podcast and I believe also part of hour 2 as well.

      • This article is an interview back in march 2014 with Dave bartoo and a columnist for a news company called grantland http://grantland.com/the-triangle/cfb-matrix-dave-bartoo-q-a-player-safety/

Here he talks about pace of play, how many plays/snaps ran in a game and speed of the game. SEC is the slowest conference and has the most injuries. Big 12 was the fleas test and had fewer injuries. He also states that the more mass/heavier a player is, the more likelihood of them having a serious to season ending injury. The more lean and smaller players, the least amount of a chance of getting injured. So no wonder Riley teams always deal with injuries every year, pace is slower, they care more about how much mass a player has vs being lean and strong( Ala Gary Anderson).

        • That’s of course because the only conference that play’s football by men is the SEC, so naturally they will wind up hurting each other with their power. (nevermind that ATM and mizzou were immediately competitive in the conf.)

        • Dave is an actual Duck. Running demo numbers is just not what I imagined any Nikegon alum would garner for a profit model.

So… I never understood his coaching effect variable. I liked it when cognitive dissonance allowed me to like it. I’m human… and stupid when it comes to hope and football. But time has proven that variable to be a joke.

Other than that, I do like Bartoo’s number crunch.

However, he plays with the pay wall. He’s like Pomeroy with hoops. He provides all the numbers everyone wants in a handy dandy location. Then he supposes his nexus is popular because of the final analysis, not the hard work of accumulation and accessibility.

          Sad.

      • Probably the case. Choukair was 1-1 on FGs last year with a long of 20 yards. Colorado State’s kicker is now a three year first string. (16-22 FGs, L/44, 43-46 PATs last year alone). Choukair looks good so far, but has yet to really prove anything on the field. I’m sure kicking in altitude won’t do anything to hurt his stats this week though…

  66. What’s the logic of a 3am flight this morning to CO?
Is that to save money on hotels for one night? I can’t see why you’d fly at 3am this morning with a game tomorrow.

  67. For what it’s worth (i.e. nothing) ESPN now has us favored according to their power index but 3%. OSU ranks 54th in the country in their power index (which has the ucks at 24…)

  68. The power index I’m using has the Pac-12 (and OSU non-conference opponents are as follows
this does not take into account home field advantages that are added in later for games
e.g. Colorado State is favored this week simply because they are at home:)

    5. USC
    8. Washington
    14. Stanford
    23. Oregon
    24. Washington State
    28. UCLA (do not play)
    30. Colorado
    37. Utah (do not play)
    47. Arizona State
    49. Minnesota
    53. OREGON STATE
    60. Arizona
    62. Colorado State
    65. California

  69. Would be more confident with a home opener against a weak opponent.

Luton is going to need some time to learn this level of ball. If he gets happy feet and makes bad decisions they will have to revert to pounding the ball on the ground and risk over using Nall to salvage a win. By the time they make this adjustment there may not be enough time left.

I think they lose a close one. The usual disappointing start to every season.

  70. I would think flying out this afternoon would be the best. As I understand it you either want to play within a day or so of arriving at altitude or spend 2 or 3 weeks acclimating.
