Angry’s Depth Chart

575

This based on talent level and needs (e.g. mass on the DL). If the season were to start today, and this weren’t the rotation, I’d think Smith had made errors. Subject to change as more data rolls in. I don’t know the injury status of all these guys, so that could change things as we get updates on that.

QB – Gebbia, Nolan
RB – Jefferson, Tyler, Lowe, Baylor
WR – Lindsey, Harrison, Bradford, Taylor
TE – Musgrave, Overman
RT – Kipper
LT – Gray
C – Eldridge
RG – Keonounbaum
LG – Levengood/Clarke (equal)

DL – Reichner, Bennett, Shippen, Sandberg, Hodgins
OLB – Rashad Jr, Gumbs
ILB – Speights, Roberts
S – Morris, Arnold
CB – Dunn, Julian, R. Wright

  1. Lowe and Harrison are eligibility question marks.

And there’s no way N Wright isn’t starting barring injury. He started rough last year but vastly improved and was playing really well by the end. Hopeful about R Wright and Julian contributing too this year but they’re fresh out of JC (and R Wright missed most of his 2019 season) so we’ll see. They’ll likely be raw too.

LB is a little hard to project because we’re so deep. We’ll see if Gumbs is back to 100% off the ACL tear. I like Hughes-Murray and McCartan as well, though wouldn’t complain about the listed 4.

    • 2
      1

I don’t care for N Wright. Got burned a ton and most of his INTs were lobs thrown right to him, rather than him making plays. The two players listed have more ability and should jump him. I like Hughs-Murray, too, and McCartan is a pretty good playmaker. If Gumbs isn’t healthy, we’re fine with either.

Lowe and Harrison should be in, but as mentioned, if anything like that changes I’ll adjust it. Baylor would jump Lowe. Flemings would probably jump to fourth.

    • I think all we have 6 guys at OLB that will see time. Always fresh rushers when you have Rashad, Gumbs, Sharp, McCartan, Tago and hughes murray. I’m betting that group gets 20 sacks in a typical season. Short season I’m hoping for 14.

Gould is a good prospect at receiver too. He’s a serious burner.

      • I couldn’t remember Gould, so I had to go back and see what I wrote about him when he signed.

Anthony Gould — Small frame. Decent speed but not breakaway. There’s some ability here, but I’m thinking a move to CB might be better for him.

I’ll have to watch the film again, but looks like I wasn’t impressed back then.

  2. Mostly agree, although I’d put Bradford as the #1 or #2 WR option (not sure if you are putting them in order of ranking or if that’s just your top 4 with no order?), and Quitoriano as the #2 TE.

    • 3
      2

To me Lindsey and Harrison both have more upside than Bradford. Both have breakaway speed. Bradford has been mostly good, but also shaky at times. Hard to believe opposing teams fear or respect him as a #1. I actually like him most in the slot.

I don’t have anything against Quitoriano, but I like the other two guys more.

  3. Baylor is actually pretty interesting. I think Tyler has more ability, and Lowe has a pedigree and highlight reel that screams more ability, but Baylor is diverse…he’s a pretty shifty runner and good pass catcher. He’d be ideally used in 3rd down situations where run/pass is an option.

    • Baylor absolutely hates being tackled. He fights contact like he’s being pulled into a lake of snakes. I wasn’t sold on him until he basically spun and willed himself into the end zone from 3 yards out last year. I will never complain about have 3+ ready to go backs. The ducks proved how deadly a 3 back rotation can be under chip.

  4. First scrimmage is this Saturday. Looking forward to hearing all of the good news from our local media.
The leadup to this season is going to feel like an eternity.
I feel bad for the players having to start their season just before the weather gets frosty.

    • Is there anything to stop them from putting actual games inside the Truax facility if the winter weather gets ugly?
Snow games are fun and all, but not really necessary to put the players out in those conditions since there won’t be a live audience.
Is the ceiling high enough for punting and do the sidelines have enough room for teams to stand out of the way?

      • There’s just no practical way to host a game in truax. Punts would hit the roof, there’s no goal posts for kickers, no place for coaches to see from above and most importantly, there’s no room for tv equipment.

Corvallis winters rarely have snow. Rainy and gusty is the worst it can get.

But think about places like Pullman, Boulder and Salt Lake. Snow games for sure. Once Dec comes, the temps drop rapidly.

Beavs catch a break and only travel to Utah but at the beginning of Dec.

        • Makes sense. I havent spent any time inside that facility to see how much room there is inside.
Kicking/punting instantly squash that option. Didnt know if they had any elevated platforms or crows nest setups for coaches.
TV crews could figure something out. Will be interesting to see how those other teams handle it. Might see some Green Bay-esque games in Colorado and Utah.
Saw an article claiming Boulder was the “Snowiest city” in the nation last year.

          https://www.denverpost.com/2020/04/16/americas-snowiest-city-boulder-colorado/

  5. Rashed, Roberts, Speights and Gumbs.
Good chance all 4 will be on NFL rosters some day. Rashed for sure. Roberts we’ll find out after this season. Speights certainly seems headed that direction in 2-3 years. Gumbs just needs to have better luck with his health. Only thing holding him back.

    • Sharp and McCartan could probably scrap into practice squads. Sharp is really impressive imo. He went on a mission trip, lost a ton of weight and then got himself together and productive in a year.

      • Tago is another young guy who already has a ton of experience. Could lump him into the same category with Sharp and McCarten.

Thinking back to last year, the little we saw of Gumbs, he stood out as possibly the best player on our defense. Really too bad these knee injuries have mostly shut him out the past 2 seasons. Hoping he get a shot this year to show what he can do in the shortened season.

        • I think Tago could get there but I think he took a step back last year. He was huge his freshman year when we had basically freshman playing everything. I think with the additions of some of the new recruits and transfers his upside is a bit reduced. Him and McCartan have had essentially the same career arc but McCartan definitely had the edge last year in playing time and impact. I’m just glad we use a high rotation on defense so all these guys can get playing time. I would hate for a guy like Tago to transfer for playing time.

Daschel reporting that Clarke has opted out this year. OSU won’t comment until the player does. Tough loss as he would have seen quite a bit of PT

    • I’m curious how good of shape he is in. He gained over 20# in the off season which could be bad or good. Either way best of luck to him.

    • And the Florida/LSU game has now been cancelled/postponed, as 21 Florida players tested positive this week after their A&M trip last weekend. Another crazy high positive case count for a Florida team(Taggert’s FAU being the other)

      • Vandy Mizzou pp to Dec as well as Vandy couldn’t meet the 53 player requirement. Combo of injuries, opt out, close contact, and positive covid-19 cases.

    • Nick Saban (as well as the Alabama AD) tests positive for Covid19 and is in quarantine this week. Sark will be taking over HC duties. Wonder how that affects the spread?

If it had come 1 week sooner, we could have had Kiffin vs Sark last week.

    • As far as I know the only differences between the markets is 50Hz vs 60Hz and 3 phase voltage (220/230/240 EU) vs single lateral or dual phase 120/240 in the US. As long as the multimeter can account for the different Hz settings I don’t see why it would care about the voltages. I would contact customer support for whatever company produces it and ask them directly though.

    • Thanks for posting.
      FWIW, my takeaways:
-Lindgren mentioned Musgrave when talking speed of receiving corps
-Noted that Jermar is healthy and BJ Baylor got kudos for ability to make catches out of backfield
-Lindgren mentions Gebbia has had a couple TO’s………motivational talk or concern?
-Sorensen mentions Sandberg as hardest to block

Gebbia comes across as a real leader.
Anyone else think Eldridge’s arms look a little on the wimpy side?

    • The Musgrave mention stood out to me, too. They need to make him the #1 – dude looks like Gronk LE on film.
Gebbia turnovers are a flashing yellow light, but he said it happened when installing some new plays. Probably not a big deal but something to watch.

Sorenson has his head on straight. Versatility could come in very handy.

OT: The City of Portlland just missed out on hosting the ’25 and ’26 WBB Final Four. And it’s reported that the MLB to PDX outfit has had talks with MLB officials “put on hold”.
Anyone seriously believe those “peaceful protests” over the last 4 months or so weren’t the biggest factor?

EDIT/ADD: Some good news from the GT:
“Oregon State on Wednesday was named the host of four future NCAA postseason events, including men’s and women’s basketball games at Portland’s Moda Center.

The university will run a women’s basketball regional in 2024 and men’s basketball first- and second-round games, a men’s golf regional and a women’s gymnastics regional in 2026.”

    • 2
      5

I’m leaning toward just the general uncertainty about when fans will start attending sporting events in large numbers again as a main factor. Bad time for expansion.

      • Can’t agree. Tampa and Phoenix fans more likely to attend? The fact that some 7000 tickets were sold to last years regional in Portland before the participants were announced, along with the national recognition of both Oregon WBB teams, makes me wonder.
As for expansion of MLB, sure its a bad time but it was just as bad when these preliminary talks were put on the calendar.

        • I was just talking about the MLB expansion.

The NCAA still awarded hosting for several other tournament events to OSU/Portland. Given that, I’m assuming the final 4 is going elsewhere because the whether in March sucks in Portland and more people would rather travel to the warmer locations for the main event.

          • I don’t expect this pandemic to limit us indefinitely, but I won’t be surprised if it severely limits games and crowds in 2021. I can’t believe anyone would want to talk about expansion and building expensive stadiums in a “public/private partnership.” Look at LA’s and LV’s empty, $1B+ NFL stadiums….sure, they may be full again, in what? 2022? That has to hurt.

          • It doesn’t really matter if they would be full from an investment perspective. The public sector is pretty much blown up at this point financially. Nobody is going to have money to build stadiums for a long time.

    • Yeah, maybe zero.
We should have been playing now if we wanted to get it in. Everyone knows it will get worse as the weather gets worse.
Speaking of, we’re about 15 miles from the mandatory fire evacuations now. I’m getting nervous. Air Quality was 472 (hazardous) this morning. Worst I’ve ever seen by far. It looks like the apocalypse.

      • Wow, didn’t realize you guys still had fires going on. Do you think you’re in any risk to have your area evacuated based on the direction of the fire’s movement?
Hopefully you’re able to get some clean air inside your home. We found leaving our furnace fan running 24/7 helped filter it quite a bit, but you may need to double check your filter is rated high enough for smoke

        • We’re in the city, which has the natural firebreaks of pavement, etc. So I wouldn’t think so. But it’s getting close, and with wind it can jump around, so maybe.

Also, I’m afraid to run the furnace…it’s a new, high efficiency furnace that takes air from outside. So it will be sucking in this toxic air. I doubt the filter can remove the small particles. It’s about to go under freezing tomorrow, right as the fire gets its closest.

          • What’s that?
Do you think wrapping a filter around the external opening/pipes that draw in air would make the air okay? Wonder if that would stress the system…

As is I don’t trust one filter to get all the particles, though, so I have to do something or just bundle up.

          • We did the box fan method too last month. Only problem you may run into is those filters and fans are going to sell out everywhere quickly, so grt one now if you can. These are pretty effective air cleaners.
Also, I should have mentioned we only ran our furnace on the “fan” setting(no heat or A/C), which recirculated the air inside our house. Still might not be an option for you, but thought it was worth mentioning.

            https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9vJk5BM8xUo

          • Ah, interesting.

The furnace has a 1″ filter on it. I’m just concerned using it because it’s brand new. Afraid I’m going to destroy it sucking in all this bad air because I’m not convinced a 1″ filter is going to stop the tiny particles from this fire. I was thinking of maybe cutting up a furnace filter and putting it on the outside pipes (it’s a high efficiency furnace, so it draws air from outside). We put in a Nest thermostat that has all those options, like fan only, etc.

          • You should be able to access the filter on the system and take it out to see what it’s rating is. There’s something like 5 different levels of filtration for most brands of filter. The higher rated ones are designed to handle smoke particles. But i also undertand your hesitency if it’s constantly drawing on external air.
Maybe there’s an HVAC expert on the blog who could comment. Where’s Jack when you need him?

          • Not an expert but know stuff. Putting a filter over the intake will probably reduce the air flow enough to mess with the system. Just close up and keep a box fan filters in rooms you are hanging.

          • Thanks, NB. I think I got right in the middle of that rating system for the filter. Merve rating? I think it’s something like that. From what I read if you go too small you tax the system, too big you let things in. So I went middle. Can’t remember the exact number.

I’m most concerned with destroying the furnace since we just put it in. If the filter doesn’t catch the particles, I assume they go into the furnace. My understanding dirt in there is what causes cracks, etc.

            Got it, Nuke. Thanks.

          • Nuke, that’s what we plan to do, but it’s going to be 29 degrees…kinda need the furnance. Wish we had bought space heaters now…probably too late to go grab some. Our place has a fireplace (kind of ironic), but all I have is pine, which is awful for burning. Just wasn’t prepared for this. So many other things going on didn’t think how the fire could effect heating the place.

          • Not an expert, but we had air in the 500 neighborhood for several days. Ran the furnace on “circulate” (no heat or cooling) and checked the filter after about 3 weeks. Filter was MERV 8 (which doesn’t catch the smallest particles) and I was impressed with the amount of junk it caught, junk which would have entered the home if not filtered.
Bottom line, even a low rated filter will catch some of the stuff you don’t want to breath.

I think someone here posted a pic of a box fan set up to push air through two filters arranged to form a triangle with the fan, again maybe not the most efficient filters but still better than using your lungs as a filter.

Oh, and as for filtering the inlet duct for the furnace, I’d not do that without checking with the installer. Not hard to believe that could cause damage to the unit.

          • Thanks, old beav. Yeah that most I’m going to try is running the furnace on fan. So that takes air from inside the house/return vents and sends it to be heated, and then pushes it through the vents? Over and over….?

            That could work…

It’s either that or burn pine in the fireplace. Need to plan for insane wildfires moving forward, apparently…

          • If you can get some merve 8 use those. Heating your house to atleast 55 is more important that minor buildup in the hvac system. Run the furnace, get better filters tomorrow and use box filters to clean up your breathing air. When the smoke clears higher an HVAC company to do a furnace and duct cleaning. The particles won’t get into any actual motor or electricql bits, it’s all contained in the ducting system and discharged through the filter. They are designed to suck in dirty air and push it through the filter.

Sorry for all the typos. It’s medication day and it whips the shit out of me everytime.

          • So they’re Merv 7, pleated. When researching filters I found those to be the best compromise of all factors. Though, I don’t remember much that went into that decision. They were relatively expensive and highly rated.

It looks like the Nest doesn’t allow me to run the furnace on fan mode. It’s either heat where it pulls in air, or it’s fan, where it circulates what’s inside, but doesn’t heat it. Weird. Seems strange for an updated system.

I guess we’ll see how it goes and what we can tolerate.

          • Merve 7 is totally acceptable. Just check the filter every couple days and replace it when its gross enough you don’t want to touch it.

          • You can pretty much bet anything rated Merv12 or above is already sold out. That’s what I ran into when the smoke situation got bad around here. But the lower ratings like 7 and 8 sold out a little more slowly, so you may have luck if you move on it quickly

          • Cool, yeah let me know. Back when researching these last year, I read that anything over 7 puts stress on the system (I guess having to pull air through such a fine mesh) and shortens the life of the furnance…that’s why I stopped at 7. For extreme situations like this maybe it’s worth it. I should grab a box for fire season.

We got lucky and the wind shifted from West to East tonight, so we can run the furnace no issues. Wind is blowing the smoke away now.

          • We did the box fan thing with a 20 x 20 x 1 merv 10 filter. It seemed like it helped and the filter picked up stuff based on it turning grey/brown. Wife found the filters online somewhere because anything over merv 4 was sold out.

  8. A topic that I think will remove one of OSU’s recruiting advantages has come up recently. The NCAA is looking to allow undergrad athletes to have a 1 time waiver for transfers so they won’t need to sit out a full academic year. Also, if used during the athlete’s undergrad years, they will forfeit the use of it as a grad transfer. Athletes will be reguired to announce their intention to transfer by May in order to play the next Fall.(with some exceptions for special cases, of course)

Why this hurts OSU. Think of players like Gumbs/Gebbia/Lindsey/Roberts, who entered Fall camp with their respective teams, but then transferred to OSU before OSU’s fall enrollment was closed. Having a late start to fall term helped OSU because only a small handful of schools start as late as we do, which was attractive to players who wanted to play the following year without sitting the next fall.
That advantage still exists, but I think less players will actually use it, knowing they can transfer in May and still play the following Fall.

  9. Just for fun, way OT
Story concludes, “In the end, mama llama was reloaded into the truck and provided some medication to ease her mama llama trauma and also reunited with the rest of her travel companions. The driver was warned for ORS 818.300 operating with a leaking or shifting load.”

What a dumb take and also not so good on the old self reflection. The guy who says how concerning it is to have his news filtered by facebook cracked me up. Maybe look at an actual news source? Read some papers? Your facebook feed is already filtered by what you have liked, data they have collected and your friends. Basically hes complaining that facebook doesn’t like his echo chamber.

      • I had just recently deleted both of my facebook accounts over the past couple of weeks(beavrecruiting and my personal one) because I found the site to be pretty useless to me, and the few times I did use it, it seemed like the environment was become less and less likable over time and I didn’t see any reason to take part any longer. Haven’t missed it or looked back.
Unfortunately, I can’t quit twitter. It’s useful for the recruiting stuff but that’s about I’ll I use it for. That environment has become toxic too with all of the twitter bot activity, but it does seem twitter has been getting a better handle on those accounts and has been shutting them down. Must be a difficult task to stay on top of.

  11. Beaver Athletics is doing those fan cutouts to help fill the empty stands this season(maybe they should hang onto the cutouts for future seasons too)
$50 for most fans, a little cheaper for season ticket holders or students. Plus one of their advertising partners will plant a tree for every purchase to help restore some of the burnt wilderness in the state. Lots of rules to prevent people from making provocative photo cutouts, as you could imagine.
Think I’ll have to do it, just for the souvenier(they give you your cutout after the season ends)

  12. Off topic from OSU Football, but I’ve always wondered why the state of Oregon does not have an indoor track facility. It seems as though Oregon universities could pool their money to build a facility and make a ton of money by hosting high school, college, and professional track meets.

    Here’s a fun one,

Who should appear as cutouts at Reser?

The obvious – any former greats from all sports at OSU. Current NFL players should get some prominence.

Who knew that Osama Bin Laden’s death was a hoax and that Obama had Seal Team Six killed by shooting down their chopper….and then to top it all off, we paid Iran $150B to keep the whole thing quiet. Wow, that sounds totally plausible doesn’t it? Trump is absolutely absurd and delusional. Sorry about posting a political take but couldn’t pass up the absurdity of Trump’s latest sign of desperation.

You such a funny guy, CJ–how’s that non-denial of Q working for you. Even Republican senior women in Florida are in on the joke; “Trump can’t shut his mouth, and when he does speak, all can do is blame it on someone else”.

Sorry Biden’s policy explanations last night might have a little too much for you. Stick to sound bites, and delusional conspiracies spouted by Dear Leader.

Democrat are inept. They’ve had four years to come up with someone – well, someone who isn’t Biden. Commentary about the debate: ‘like two old codgers arguing about the hedge line.’ Unfortunately, the hedge line is the United States and, by extension, the rest of the planet.

          • seaverbeaver,

We’ll see. I hope new, emerging democrats win and I am pleased that some in the party are focusing upon electoral races to state legislatures etc. It’s the DCC, with which I have a problem.

The best you could come back with was your attempted lame “look at me, I think I’m a bad ass” by dropping a few F bombs. Being ready is not the same as being capable as Trump.is about ready to discover. Several members of his own party are now distancing themselves from him for preservation of their own political careers but it may already be too late for them. Of Trump could stay out of his own way and stop with the deep state, dark Shadows nonsense, he’d be better off. He is coming off as a whack job just like many of his supporters.

          • Haaaa ok dad. You feel cool now?

If you didn’t know by now, Trump is the world’s greatest troll. If punk rock was personified, it’s Trump. He’ll retweet anything that goes against the norm and make absurd claims.

Of course he doesn’t believe it. The basis for why he’s called for resetting relations with Pakistan is that bin Laden hid in Pakistan, and that special interests were protecting him. This is also why the Indians absolutely love Trump.

I think that’s sort of the point tho. He peddles this crap because he knows that the media has lied to the American people over and over again, so he wants in as well to prove how absurd it is. How many wars have we gotten into because of media lies? Almost every single one since WW1.

It really is America’s last chance to end the expansionist movement that we’ve adopted since WW1. We saw what happened with Tulsi Gabbard’s political career when she voted to bring troops home from Afghanistan. Sudan is next on Biden’s list of strategic targets, then Venezuela, then Pakistan.

That’s not true. He has goals (e.g. reduce dependence on China, reduce US military involvement overseas), but he isn’t capable of presiding over an organization that can develop and execute the strategies necessary to accomplishing such complicated ends. Of course, his narcissism gets in the way.

His advantage as a candidate and marketable commodity (disruptive, blunt personality) is likely his weakness as a leader.

All this underscores one of the big problems with democracy in the present age: elections are just big marketing contests, but actually governing requires skillsets that seldom coincide with personal marketability.

            4

Well I agree with the narcissism part. I don’t agree that China dependence is a personal goal to him at all. Off the cuff he asked China to look into Biden. The trade war stuff plays well with his base (or did until it became a sacrifice for farmers). He ying yangs on middle eastern states, fighting/pulling out and threats to middle east groups and states constantly. Seriously if you look at Trump’s statements there who are the allies and who are the enemies.

He does stuff based on advisors, whoever holds his nearly half billion in foriegn debt and how much chaos he can bring into the news cycle.

          • 3
            2

“if you look at Trump’s statements”…then you will go insane because they’re incoherent. It’s a result of his “negotiation style” if you want to call it that. Watch his actions, not his words.

Asking China to investigate Biden isn’t proof of anything. It’s just rhetoric. He knows they never would. What’s more telling is the assault on Chinese tech companies.

Of course Middle East foreign policy is messy. They aren’t exactly straightforward relationships. As an example, Saudi Arabia has been a longtime ally for various reasons, but that’s begun to shift as world oil supply changes and US shale has gotten bigger. They threaten US producers all the time and are currently in the process of destroying the US oil industry (with help from COVID). It’s gotten clearer and clearer that KSA backs terrorists. But we still need them to prop up the dollar. Are they still an ally? Yes, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to be 100% aligned with them on everything.

Middle East policy has been a mess for years. This isn’t a new phenomenon under Trump.

          • How has policy changed since he took office? What has he actually done?

I’ll grant you it’s very difficult to find any kind of objective reporting on it. When you Google “Trump accomplishments as president” it’s 50% sketchy pro-Trump sites and 50% “Fact-check” articles from anti-Trump outlets.

Foreign policy is probably the easiest place to look first because there’s less media noise around it (because most Americans don’t really care).

Here’s a “fact-checked” list from the NYT Opinions that’s more domestically focused. Hardly comprehensive, but it’s something: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/11/opinion/fact-check-trump.html

The unpredictability of Trump is why a lot of leaders respect him. Kim Jong Un thinks he’s bat-shit crazy, and that’s a good thing, because striking the fear of god into their leadership is the only way we can shake their confidence in their Chinese masters. North Korea does not like China, and we don’t like China.

People are so upset with Trump because he has no strings attached when it comes to a lot of policies. All he really asks to his staff is “Is this good for America from a financial perspective?” If he’s sold, he’ll adopt the policy. It’s the reasoning why he wants to pull out of war because he has not been convinced that the deployment of our troops to Europe, Afghanistan, and the Middle East is actually a good investment, whereas a politician like Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden, who have financial interests with defense contractors, can’t ask those questions.

I do think the war against the main stream media and big tech is a personal vendetta for Mr. Trump, however. Is that such a bad thing?

The old “Trump’s playing 4-dimension chess argument”. Not really, he thinks the black checkers are Oreos and keeps eating them.

          • 22
            8

Did you read my response? He’s not playing “4D chess”, nor does it take much thought to think about what he’s doing. The problem is that the American people think it requires playing 4D chess in order to make America successful, which has been the playbook since WW1. What has resulted is that Americans think that blowing up villages in Pakistan with drone strikes will serve America’s interests through complex reasoning. “Oh, it’s more complicated than that…”

Being a successful president is simple. Be unpredictable in foreign affairs to keep allies and adversaries on their toes, and negotiate for the best deals. Delegate responsibilities to people and instruct them to come up with plans that serve the best interests of America. If they can’t do that, then fire them. It’s not difficult.

Raoul Pal hasn’t been right about anything in nearly 20 years, yet he still somehow makes a ton of $ selling Real Vision subscriptions. His guests are knowledgeable, so maybe that’s how/why. Or his cool accent. Accents sell.

That said, I like BTC better than the USD, long-term. Short-term I’d still remain in dollars and wait for bitcoin corrections to make that trade. Gold is the better value than both. I agree they’re trying to pump up Robinhooders. There are hedge funds that follow what’s going on on Reddit and Robinhood and then go to the media to pump and dump those ideas. It’s bad.

Blockchain technology is amazing. There’s no reason Bitcoin will be the ultimate winner other than it was first, but if something better comes along it’s gone, so I’m more interested in companies that can monetize the backbone rather than holding the coins.

  15. Saw another article about those cutouts at Reser. I guess if you spend big bucks, ($1000) you will get a life sized standup of yourself positioned on the sidelines during games.
I imagine it would be pretty cool seeing yourself get obliterated by a tackling player during a game on national tv. Not $1000 cool though.

    • I had a sideline pass once, took my baby on the field in a front carrier. Was walking around then finally as the game started someone was like you can’t have a baby on the field… good times.

      • I’m sure your baby still had a good experience watching alone from the bleachers while you enjoyed your sideline pass the rest of the day.

      • I didn’t have a sideline pass but ended up on the sideline as we were getting ready to rush the field when we beat the ducks. Quacks player got tackled out of bounce. They are big.

    • I was at the usc upset when everyone ran on the field too early. I was waiting but so many went that I hopped over too. So we ended up standing with the players for the end so it worked out good.

  16. Just went to check the latest BetOnline odds for the season o/u, they’re out of service right now due to “an aggressive cyber attack”.

  17. The talking (or writing) heads seem convinced that Cal and the ucks are the top two in the North.
We already discussed the ucks and Cristobal’s likely unmasking, but what about Cal?

The Register Guard has a piece up on Wilcox and his team, some of their observations:
After three years running a spread offense, Wilcox hired former Oregon quarterback Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator. He is installing a pro-style scheme that will, at times, see a full backfield behind experienced QB Chase Garbers.
“You’ll see tight ends and fullbacks being utilized, but we’ll also have the flexibility to spread people out,” Wilcox said.
On Defense, they’ll have to replace LB Evan Weaver who led the nation in tackles last year…by a lot!

So, is the visit by Cal just before the Civil War (yup, I said it) going to end in a confidence building W for the good guys? Can angry find a Bloggin’ Bear to ask/answer questions ala Hank from GoMightyCard?

    https://www.registerguard.com/story/sports/college/football/2020/10/15/pac-12-preview-cal-bears-ready-contend-north-division-title/3664522001/

    • I’m not sure I’m drinking the kool aid. Evan weaver is a huge loss. If their starting qb can stay healthy they could be dangerous tho. Their backup was pretty shitty.

  18. Looks like former GA recruit, Christian Wallace, is going to be at Arizona this year. I guess Greg Burns who coached CBs here briefly also offered him at USC, but now that Burns is at Arizona he also recruited him there.

Off topic, and I don’t normally follow MLB that closely, but I’m going to be pissed if the Braves and Rays both end up blowing their big series leads in the two LCS. I don’t want either the Dodgers or the Astros to be World Series champs.

Beavers get a 2-star PWO QB from Camas….the QB Camas connection. Fantastic….I mean it worked out great with Colletto right? Since Camas is mostly a run-oriented offense, I wonder how he’ll fit into JS’s offense?

  21. Apparently, wannabeav is consulting for the Memphis coaching staff…….go for it inside your own 20! 4th and 2, no problem. Success……never a doubt!

    • yeah, baby. The “Pullman Scenario” was shaping up at the end of the Notre Dame game too, but the Irish converted on third down and thus didn’t have to go for it on 4th, as the announcers were suspecting they would.

    • It’s like watching horse racing. All eyes are on Arizona and Florida for most of the race and from out of nowhere, North Dakota captures the crown!

      • It’s wild. Being high risk I’m pretty thankful for Oregon’s mask mandate. Iowa has 1.5 million less people and nearly tripple the infections. Idaho has 10k more. Kentucky, closest state to us in terms of population, has more than double. It is not due to test volume either, net positivity is higher in Iowa and Kentucky. I have come to a few conclusions now that we have more data

        1) Masks, sanitizing and washing hands should be the procedure for any new infectious disease.

        2) population density isn’t as big of a factor as behavior. The logical assumption was that high density cities would be anhilated but turns out that’s probably only true if behavior is equal.

        3) Mass lockdowns are unwise. As noted many times the economic effects are high and the mental effects are also very bad. Quarentine could be effective early in hot spots or when cases are extremely small (like Ebola). The mix of this all being new to the US and bad information early on masking to protect supplies made it seem like this was the only option. It should be considered an extreme move.

        • It should be considered an extreme move.………Spot on!

Since you pay closer attention than I, how does the current situation in the rest of the world square with the claim by some politicians that “It’s all Trumps fault”? Seems other countries are having a wave too.

          • 3
            3

This will be a super long post, sorry for those uninterested, its just a good and complicated question! I don’t have access to a good database or time to do a TON of analysis but I have been observing the world numbers everyday since late February when world meter launched its covid 19 page. That said this is purely my observations of the data and not exact by any means.

To start off with I can only really look at it if I do some binning. The four I would like to use are extreme outliers (1 bad and 1 good), early outbreaks (Italy, China, Spain, France) and the per capita outliers (bad only since good means very little compared to total numbers good).

            1) The bad outliers: Over half of the worlds confirmed infections are in three countries, India, 7.544 million, (makes sense its one the most populous, densest and poorest countries in the world), Brazil, 5.224 million, (uhhh not on anyones top 10 list prior to the pandemic), and the US, 8.354 million, (20% of the worlds confirmed infections).

India is hard to say cause they are testing heavily, second most in the world behind the US, but they have so many people its really impossible to know how accurate it is. Their positivity is very high at 8% of those tested are positive. Overall their per capita numbers are on par with 20% the US and Brazil. Considering their challenges I don’t think India is doing that bad and their numbers are much lower than I would expect.

Brazil Is not hard. They have taken almost no precautions and their leader actively pushes against taking it seriously. They have the 14th highest per capita infection rate in the world. Their suffering is 100% behavior based imo.

US is also not hard. Early mixed messaging on masking and terrible overall response has led to the worst gross numbers in the world. We have 20% of the infections, 20% of the deaths, 12th highest per capita infection rate, most tests completed and a net positivity of 6.5%. Another factor that is not often discussed is the US has the highest rate of repeat test takers which skews our net positivity lower. We have every advantage to stop a pandemic. We are wealthy, huge medical apparatus with every gizmo, communication apparatus like no other on earth, data tracking second only to China, the greatest scientific resources in the world, one of the lowest population densities in the world and advanced warning. Politics and behavior are 100% the reason we are doing terribly. I won’t go into it, if you don’t know what the behaviors and politics are by now I don’t think anything will be explanatory.

            2) Good outliers: I would consider this to be anything under 1000 cases per million people. Theres about 75 countries (35% of the world) in this category. Many of them are probably due to the lack of a ability to report or test, Syria, or out right suppression, China/Niger. Some of the real shining stars are places like New Zealand, South Korea, Malaysia or Taiwan. Of the countries on this list we can trust the reasons are simple. They have masked from the start (culture or experience), many are easy to isolate (islands or peninsulas) and they took testing and quarantine (of infected and travelers) very seriously.

            3) Some of the early outbreak countries have been in the news a ton as examples of where mask mandates, quarantines and isolation have backfired because they are having new waves. These are countries like Italy, France and Spain usually. Research is show that most of these resurgences are due to loosening restrictions (mostly travel, mask and gathering mandates), holiday gatherings and covid fatigue (people just being exhausted by it all and going to see family/friends). There is some very fascinating research in Italy/France/Spain that is showing the extreme quarantines have exacerbated the new waves because of the pyschological toll. Many people in these countries have started traveling, seeing friends and family and trying to return to everyday life. The people who make that choice are generally less risk averse and less likely to distance and mask during these tasks. If you look at the long term data vs policy decisions you see spikes 10-21 days after reductions of mandates. If simpler mandates like masks and distancing had been the norm from the start then it is theorized that risky behavior would be less prevalent now (IE Eastern/Southeast Asia). The simplest correlation to the increases is less rules = more infections but the complex answer is human behavior can only be controlled so far before you get extreme responses.

            4) There are 7 countries in the world with per infections/million over 30,000. The list includes Qatar, Bahrain, Andorra, Aruba, French Guiana, Vatican City and Israel. The reasons for each vary but class systems, islands that get a decent viral load before restrictions (inescapable), and politics are the main culprits. The two worst countries in the world are Qatar and Bahrain which also have some of the worst wealth inequality in the world. From what I can gather they essentially didn’t give two you know whats about the lower classes and just isolated the rich. Andorra is a bizarre one, they essentially are extremely libretarian and a tiny country so they can’t get the populous to do what they ask and their data is disproportionally affected by cluster outbreaks (churches, families, friend groups, work spaces). Aruba and French Guiana are fairly terrifying, essentially they didn’t control travel or take precautions early and the virus got ahead of them. Now they are small island nations who are isolated and you can’t easily leave. The Vatican is basically highly skewed by cluster outbreaks. They only have 27 cases but due to the tiny population it makes their per capita data go crazy. Israel is probably the most disappointing. They have great border control and had every reason to do well with this pandemic but internal politics led them to very poor response and a pretty major outbreak. If you watch/read any pandemic related fiction Israel is almost always considered a great contender for winning a pandemic, guess not.

Overall behavior is the greatest factor in how a country does. In the absolute poorest this is not true since people may not even have spare clothing to use as a mask and have no real idea what is going on or what to do, this is not the case for MOST countries in the world though.

          • Via the stats I was looking at it just isn’t particularly interesting or notable. It tracks much the same as Italy, Spain, and France.

Interestingly, deaths per 1M pop. looks very different. Only 3 of the top 10 states are red states, the others are blue. This should give a clue as to the demographic makeup of those infections.

      Top 10:
      NJ (D)
      NY (D)
      MA (D)
      CT (D)
      LA (R)
      RI (D)

      IL (D)

This is correlated to the improvements in treatment over the last year. NJ, NY, MA,CT, RI, DC, IL and LA were all hot spots extremely early and we had no idea how it really spread or how to treat it. We all remember how much demand there was for ventilators when it turns out incubating is the absolute last resort we should be taking. Death rate has gone down an estimated 2-3 times due to treatment improvement over the last 7 months. If you look at death rate charts for early states and compare it to to infection rate the treatment improvement is pretty obvious and spectacular.

        • 2
          1

Yes, but that’s only partially correct. The death rate is a much more reliable indicator because testing early on was not available which really skews the data around total number of cases. The chart linked below shows the % positivity rate, which went from 20% to 5% which really shows that the total number of cases from April-May were probably 2-4x understated. In places like NYC, they’re almost reaching herd immunity already which drastically reduces the number of positive cases there now. Most other places that were less hard hit will have higher number of cases since those populations largely do not have antibodies.

          https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/testing/individual-states

          • Isn’t that a chicken and the egg thing? If we assume death rate holds static to back track infection rate then it ignores any improvement in treatment. If we assume infection rate was correct it shows tremendous gains in treatment. Complicated analysis that is beyond my time/ability.

  22. Starting to watch some of the 2022 prospects film. Jonah Coleman blew me away. Blocking, catching and running all looks pretty polished for a high school Junior. I’m not sure what the level of competition was but they were not good enough that’s for sure. What do you guys think?

    https://247sports.com/player/jonah-coleman-46094707/

Edit: His highlights are from sophomore year O_o

    • It’s hard to see how he wouldn’t be a 4-star. He’s playing D1 in California and it looks like his team wasn’t the best last year. I guess maybe his size is considered a negative? If he’s listed as 5-9 180 in HS, he’s definitely smaller than that.

He’s able to pick up yards by breaking tackles/bouncing off contact OR quick cuts. He has good enough speed that he doesn’t get chased down from behind. The blocking is a huge plus. Comparing him to Damir Collins, Coleman seems like a more complete back (and that’s not a knock on Collins; he’s an exciting athlete).

We said it before with Vidlak, but I’m going to say it again: I don’t see how he wouldn’t end up at a bigger program. Pitre should be selling him on all the OSU backs in the NFL.

      • Totally agree. I think in a normal year he would already be getting much more attention if he could get to camps and play. Could be a real steal for OSU if he stays under the radar. The play where he blocked two guys for his buddy was the thing that caught my eye more than anything else.

  23. What if they held a scrimmage and nobody talked about it?
What if there were beat reporters who actually had “inside” sources?

Anyone seen any news about yesterday’s scrimmage??

Oh, and Wilner says Cristoball is underpaid! Gotta wonder if he’ll change his mind after the coming short season.

    • Nick Daschel had a brief comment about it that there was no media access because the team doesn’t allow media on Saturdays. And like you say, nobody seems to have inside sources with this team anymore. They’re pretty tight lipped.

  24. Jeez angry, looks like Colorado is burning down around you. Im on another site with many locals in your area. 2 new fires in as many days along with the one thats been burning for a while.

      • Yep. Mookie Betts was UnBeaverable and totally RiDuckulous on defense. Atlanta’s base running snafu getting doubled at home and third with no outs cost them the game and series. I’m a Dodger fan but Atlanta has a great young team. If I’m betting, the Dodgers get beat by the Rays and choke in the WS yet again.

    • “Agents of Chaos”….not jut chaos, they’re underestimating coaching and talent level. Including Jefferson (maybe last college season) and the depth behind him. Big unknowns will be line play on both sides of the ball and secondary execution.

      • That’s going to be the difference maker: our O-Line vs. their D-Line. Washington almost always has the best defensive lines in the conference since Peterson took over. I don’t see that changing under Jimmy Lake.

Oregon State needs more depth at the OL positions. We have plenty of depth at RB and WR, but until OSU can be consistently good at the OL positions, they will not be competing for conference championships.

  26. hey BeeG: this Sid Hartman must have been a big deal. Mad Dog Russo had a segment on him today and he got a memorial spot on the Bills/Chiefs game too. I had never heard of him before.

Brutal beat-down for the Pack yesterday. I had a revelation at the end of the game when I noticed that Brady just towered over Rodgers at mid-field. As I said on the WTMJ post game call in show, when Rodgers has protection he’s the best. But if he’s under pressure, he can’t withstand it like Brady, Roethlisberger, or even Favre, and he’s not as elusive as Wilson. The Pack’s second round running back was a real miss. He looked ponderous out there; like a latter day Larry Csonka.

Speaking of post game call in shows, the best one in the business, Big-Red Overreaction (1620 Omaha) will be starting up this week. can’t wait.

    • Sid was a legend. He was the general manager that started the Lakers…………the Minneapolis Lakers before they moved to LA. Gameday will be here for the Little Brown Jug game with Michigan, so expect a major segment. The guy was a walking sports history trove and he knew everybody and everybody knew him. One story he always told was about John Wooden. The U of M had agreed to hire him at the same time UCLA offered him their job. He was a B1G guy from Purdue and wanted the Mn job. He had promised the AD at UCLA he would give him his answer by Saturday night.
Blizzard took down the phone lines so MN could not get ahold of him so he accepted the UCLA job. What might have been. He was kind of an asshole
on this radio show he had. They kept him on waaaaay to long and I used to listen for the comedy. Sidekick would screaming at him because he was hard of hearing. Best buds with Bobby Knight, so you get the picture. Every new coach in town used to have kiss his ass and put up with his rudeness at the introductory pressers. He broke his hip a few years ago and when he showed up at the Gopher volleyball matches his a personal assistant was this unbelievably hot young blonde. So he wasn’t senile!

    18 days to kickoff.
Why on earth have some teams played 5 games, yet we have almost 3 weeks to play our first?
My gut says something will go wrong with the virus, and the Pac being the Pac we won’t see any games.

    • PAC12 looking dumb……again. Per LA Times UCLA beat writer today:
“Pac-12 announces football requirements: At least 53 scholarship players available to participate and the following minimum number of position scholarship players available to begin a game: seven (7) offensive linemen, one (1) quarterback and four (4) defensive linemen.

      HOWEVER:
“Important disclaimer, per the conference: “The impacted institution has the option to play the game with fewer than the 53 scholarship players or fewer than the minimum number of position players listed above if it elects to do so.”

      Ummm………decisive, flexible, or just s l o w??

NOTE: Confirmation of that foolishness, and more, straight from the horses mouth (?) here:
      https://pac-12.com/article/2020/10/19/pac-12-releases-game-cancellation-policy-updated-tiebreakers-2020-football

      • I think what they’re trying to say is a team that doesn’t meet this threshold during game week can elect 1 of 3 options:

*Request game get rescheduled, if possible
*Forfeit (no Win and no Loss on record)
*Play the game with currently available players

If a team does meet this threshold, their only option that week is:
*Play the game with currently available players or take the L

It’s poorly explained, but seems reasonable to me.

        • No matter the amount of conference games played, what are the chances the beavs play in a bowl game? I know they are bowl eligibility but my thought is many bowls will not happen outside of the maybe the top 10 or so.

          • I have no idea how many bowl games the Pac has a contract with, but would imagine there will be a pecking order based on total wins and/or win % in the conference. But in any situation where it’s a tossup, OSU will probably lose out on getting picked just because they’re such a small market brand.
Thinking back to the year Nebraska made it into a bowl game with 5 wins and a terrible resume, just because they’re Nebraska and draw a big audience.

          • I think 3 wins gets them to a bowl game. A couple weeks ago Jerry Palm had them slated in the Independence Bowl vs Army. That’d be a game well worth seeing in person.

        • 3
          1

After mulling over that very confusing announcement, I came to the same conclusion that you did, but I’m not sure about the reasonable part.

Even “healthy” players have injuries, pretty much all the time. Playing through them is part of the game. Many teams will liberally slap the “questionable” tag on a large chunk of their roster, even when they know they’re gonna play. Couldn’t any team that didn’t want to play a game (for whatever reason) just slap an injury tag on a few players who could play to meet the threshold?

Seems like it really opens the door to gamesmanship and could be easily abused. Those player thresholds are tied in part to player safety, and teams shouldn’t be playing if they can’t meet them. I think if you can’t field a team, you take the L. Don’t like it? Then your team should have been more careful about distancing & exposure. The most important ability is availability, as they say…and for this season, COVID protocols are the most important thing you can do to ensure availability.

    • there’s an answer to why some teams have played five games, and will have played 7 before the Beavs line up, but you don’t want to hear it.

Great article and she’s got more moxie than most guys or other young women do. I hope she finally gets her shot. I watched her two years ago in pre-game warmups and she is silky smooth. That would be great if she could play this year and it’s promising that she has been practicing with the team.

    • Definitely get the feeling she has eligibility issues from the road she traveled to get to OSU. Coming in the States as a teen and then moving across the country for schools. Transcript could have been messy. Maybe she was a partial qualifier and could only practice.

Also her reported heart condition couldn’t have been that bad since she is still on the team. Chai Baker was denied playing due to his heart condition.

Not sure how many hockey fans there are here but Doc Emerick retired yesterday. Hands down the best hockey broadcaster of my generation and certainly in the running for all time best in any sport. Games, especially the playoffs, won’t be the same without him.

  29. Stop me if you’ve heard this before. Oregon State doesn’t have a clear cut leader at QB at this point in Fall camp.

    (Per AJ McCord on twitter)
Jonathan Smith says there’s no “clear cut great performer” at QB during #GoBeavs scrimmage.
Oregon State still rotating through Tristan Gebbia, Chance Nolan, Ben Gulbranson, Nick Moore

    • Well, that’s not encouraging. The narrative before was Gebbia was the leader and everything was looking good. I have to think with him being more of an incumbent, this means he’s taken a step back and not that the other guys have taken a step forward.

That or it’s just a motivational ploy.

    • From what I can tell from the outside looking in and what Smith has said is that Gebbia is best with the playbook but needs to work on his accuracy, nolan needs to work on the playbook, Gulbranson is young and adjusting to the speed of college, and moore drives the team down the field but needs to get more comfortable playing from the pocket. IMO if nolan buried his head in the playbook like Gebbia he would possibly surpass him. Maybe after a few games if Gebbia isn’t playing well he’s more comfortable and can come in. Would love to see Gulbranson redshirt but since it’s a free year not opposed to seeing him play if he’s ready. Moore sounds like a guy that’s a winner. He figures out ways to move the chains but doesn’t have arm strength or size and probably doesn’t throw as pretty of a ball. A lot of this is assumptions.

    • Based on the comments from Smith, it does sound like Gebbia is the leader. He didn’t say each qb got equal reps with the first time.

I heard the comments as such,
Gebbia – knows the playbook best but issue is execution
Nolan – issue is knowledge of the playbook
Gulbranson – in over his head right now.
Moore – restless leg syndrome when he sees pressure.

    • Exactly what I was thinking. In addition, seems our o line is struggling. I was bullish on qb and o line but now a bit concerned based on early indications

  30. I know I said I’d give y’all a break, but this post may help someone save a trip to Spirit Mountain.
After having no luck getting information from their Sportsbook via phone, I made the trip to the casino only to be told that they are not taking bets on the over/under W’s for the Beavs this season.
Individual game bets will be available 1 week before the game and minimum bet is only $5.

  31. Watched Smith’s presser today which is a lot about the scrimmage. Takeaways:

Beason continues to stand out and make plays and should be in the rotation this year. I think we got a good one here.
DL he feels good with hodgins and Sandberg with Rawls pushing. No mention of reichner yet.
Secondary arnold and Austin are standing out. He said they have 9 or 10 guys that him and blue feel good with.
Special teams Everett looked good. Miller and I forget the other guy making plays on special teams.
He said pass rush was good. Bad pass protection or good pass rush?
TE he says Reagan is looking good with 2 TE sets we’ll see Ralph and musgrave. Said the young guys look good as well.
No turnovers. Again is that a good job protecting the ball or defense not making plays?
No mention of lindsay yet in camp at all as far as I know. Was hoping to hear he has taken the next step but its starting to sound like young guys passing him up.
    Baylor continues to play well.

  32. Not having a QB is most concerning to me. We all took Geb for granted, but he hasn’t separated himself from the pack.

GA had teams with good position groups, but without a QB, they never did anything.

    • This is what most coaches do that don’t have a returning starter at the position. I think it’s mostly coach speak and it could also mean that the other quarterbacks are pushing for playing time. I’m more concerned with the offensive line breaking in a new quarterback. It sounds like the d is getting a lot of pressure.

      • I could also see this as a bit of psyops by JS, too. Even Gebbia is still largely unknown to the rest of the conference. I could see getting a small edge by making WSU feel overconfident thinking they won’t have much to worry about from our passing game.

        • Concur with the psyops thing.
Here’s Lindgren, as tweeted today by the new guy at the GT:
“I didn’t think any of our four guys looked great on Saturday.”
That kind of blanket statement certainly sounds like psyops, either that or the reporter didn’t have much to work with.

  33. We have a lot of talented QBs on the roster. The last thing Smith wants to do is demotivate them by saying we have a clear winner already, and risk a transfer or two. We won’t know what we really have until Nov. 7.

  34. So ASU has pulled a couple of scholarships from commits. Ouch. Will we be seeing this more and more as teams realize the carry over of players getting an extra year? That is not a good look and I would hope it affects their recruiting future.

Rewatched the 2004 and 2005 games vs. Cal. It was amazing to see what a good running game could do for the Beavs back then, and what would happen when the team became one-dimensional on offense.

Those Cal teams were absolutely loaded on offense.

Presser up on edge with lindgren and the offense. I wonder if Daschle reads ab? He asked pretty much what I did on here about lindsay. Lindgren said he’s doing well and shown flashes. Good to hear all of this positive about Sandberg. I thought he looked good coming in for someone with such little experience playing football. Sounds like the o-line frontrunners are gray, levengood, Eldridge, nous, and kipper.

Spreads are up for the CBS pool.
Looks like the Big10 and Mountain West start playing this week. Way more games on the schedule than last week

  38. Chances we land Marcus Mbow? He either really likes the beavs or he just likes anyone that comments on his tweets.

This is where the decommitment is the cb from Florida is a good thing.

        • Yeah. That’s what disruption looks like. The Wright brothers died making airplanes…if we had stopped because of that…

But in terms of investment, I wouldn’t buy either Tesla or Crispr here. I bought my Crispr at $51. At $90+ I’m not interested. Tesla need to drop like 50% to be interesting. So while these are disruptive and long-term winners, I’m personally not willing to pay 2024 earnings in 2020.

          • Mechanically, yes, but a lot of the reported issues have been software-related.

Also, there are plenty of horror stories about the manufacturing environment at Tesla and questionable QC standards. I’m sure they aren’t all true, but the current mindset in software is definitely “make the release date and fix it with patches later.” Tesla sees themselves as a technology company, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Musk instilled the same culture there, even though releasing a car to market is very different from releasing software.

  39. Interesting Twitter post by Steven Jackson today says he went to a trade/vocational school in HS and was overlooked during recruiting because of that. On paper, it looked like he was at a “special school” and it was assumed he’d be an academic risk.

DE was undeterred and the rest is history.

    • I recall the story being that most schools wanted him as a LB and Dennis wanted him as a RB. Don’t recall him being under recruited as he had numerous offers. Maybe under recruited as a RB but not overall. He also is from Vegas which is not known as a football rich talent area.

    • The pine beetle is also wiping out the forest in the Black Hills and setting up a tinderbox there as well. Hope for snow for you guys. It looks like December here in the Twin Cities, not October, with 8 inches of snow and all the leaves on the trees. 2020 sux! Gameday here for the Little Brown Jug game with Mechicken.

      • We have ash bore beetle that just arrived here last year, too. Two ashes in my yard…they’re beautiful, but won’t last. Everything sux.

I bought a used Subara yesterday, and it literally died in an intersection on the way home. Alternator either failed or never was working, and therefore the battery died. $350 in repairs out of the gate. Need to go back to Volvo – only car I trust.

  40. Holiday Bowl, along with Redbox Bowl and the Hawaii and Bahamas bowls have all been called off.
Will a three win season still get the Beavs to a bowl?
Will it matter if the Beavs win four games?

    • Was just about to comment on that. Chances of making a bowl for the Beavs are lower this season than a normal season. Not enough bowl games to go around. They’d probably need more than 4 wins to get into one. Maybe as the 2nd place team in the North they could sneak into one? I just don’t see that happening. If anything, more bowls are going to cancel as time goes by.

      • OSU and one of the Pac12 South teams they don’t already play should draw up a postseason bowl contract and play an extra Pac12 game. Like Arizona or ASU if they’re not playing in the postseason.

  41. How much did Larry Scott pay Kate Brown? She’s doing a heck of job diverting canzano’s attention right now. Basketball schedule is going to be a disaster if UP and PSU aren’t viable options for OSU this year

      • Hopefully Cory Stover or Sione Lolohea are ready to step in. I remember liking both quite a bit out of HS, but they’re both still pretty young and lightweight.

      • Just watched today’s interview and nick asked him if he was an opt out and Smith said he wasn’t available and wasn’t hurt. I think Smith had said earlier that they’re letting players make those announcements. It would suck if he did but I remember him calling out the ncaa about having players play. Which now it looks kind of foolish with how well games have been going for the most part. Weird to that his brother doesn’t seem to mind. Maybe he’s not as invested anymore being a 6th year senior and not likely to play at the next level.

I remember being disappointed seeing some of the young guys weight along the line after a year in the weight room. Guys like stover, Bennett, Hennessy are just a few that come to mind. I thought after a redshirt year they would be much bigger but hasn’t really happened yet. I remember thinking lolohea was really light for a 3-4 DL and seemed more as an olb.

      • Just saw Jonathan riley is opting out as well. I guess this was reported but I never caught it. I was wondering why he was never mentioned with the other juco guys.

    • Reichner’s mom has been all over this topic when the players were talking about not playing due to the demands. I’m not surprised. The best contribution Reichner has made is bringing his stud of a brother into the program. Too bad we will never know his capabilities.

  42. https://www.azdesertswarm.com/basketball/2020/10/23/21530896/arizona-wildcats-basketball-notice-of-allegations-sanctions-violations-ncaa
“Sports Illustrated, which reported Thursday that the UA had received an NOA, said Arizona’s case is one of the most severe among the 12 schools that were involved in the federal investigation into college basketball corruption that saw former UA assistant Book Richardson sentenced to three months in prison for accepting $20,000 in bribes from former agent Christian Dawkins in exchange for influencing Arizona’s players to sign with him.

If found guilty of Level I violations, Arizona could be hit with a postseason ban, loss of scholarships, recruiting visit restrictions, a head coach suspension, and/or show-cause penalties.”

  43. Scanned some OLive reports…looks like Angry called the OLine correctly so far, but Flemings has apparently been running with the 1s. I don’t care for that as he’s so light.

    • I don’t like him as a starter either. He should be used for a few special plays here and there but isn’t an every down player just like you have guys that aren’t every down backs. Most all of his stats are from the fcs game last year. I would like to see bradford, taylor, and harrison with some lindsay, beason, irish, and maybe gould.

I disagree with angry on the TEs. Teagan is our blocking TE while Musgrave will fill the role that togiai had but better. But overman shouldn’t play over him. Everytime he had the chance he made plays in the receiving game. He will be playing on sundays.

    • that’s a great stadium. great views of the field and the external architecture is the best I’ve ever seen. tailgate vibe is pretty good too. when I was there a few years ago we were in a lot south of the stadium right beside the rail track.

Frosty the Cornman facing certain defeat at tOSU.

…but he wins points in my book working the 2 QB formation with Martinez and McCaffery. Sure, it’s because they don’t have a true starting QB and the receiving corps is weak so the offense needs all the weapons it can get…but it makes it more interesting to watch than just another mediocre spread offense.

    • 3
      1

I find Frost immensely unlikable, but at least the Beavs have Gebbia because of his decisions. For some reason the media wants Nebraska to return to its golden era, not sure why it matters at this point in the college football pecking order? Even the announcers today were babbling about the “improved” Nebby defense even though they were getting toasted by Fields and company again.

    • I do like this team a little better than last year’s, but the deficiancies on OL and DL leave me much less optimistic. Our starting OL on paper doesn’t scream conference/division winner.

      Kipper(Hawaii transfer)
      Nous(former walk on)
      Eldridge(Arizona transfer)
      Montibon(former walk on)
      Grey(blue shirt)

      Hopefully they outperform expectations.
DLine is just short on bodies and experience

      • Last I heard levengood was with the 1s. Kipper is going to play in the NFL so it doesn’t matter how he got here. Hopefully michalcik can do his magic. He did get cordasco into the league.

        • This lineup was just based off what Daschel tweeted out early in the scrimmage as the No1 OL group.
I’m least concerned with Kipper, although he did kill several drives last year with false starts. That needs to stop.
And Nous has proven he can play Pac12 football.
Eldridge needs a healthy season. Has lost 2 years to knee issues lately.

          • I think that LG spot is still being battled over since Clarke opted out. If grey can play well and the line stays relatively healthy especially at tackle I think they’ll be alright. One positive is that Sorenson doesn’t look to be a starter yet so it looks like our talent is better than a fcs grad transfer

          • That’s what I mean. Our talent is better than FCS grad transfer level. One who didn’t make first team Big Sky. That’s my reason for tempered expectations this year.

          • True but he was moved outside to tackle at psu I think they plan on him playing more inside. He could make a nice backup at C and G.

          • I saw a quote from one of the coaches they were moving him inside to guard.

I hope the line is developing a mean, attacking mindset.

        • I totally trust Michalczic. He has proven himself wherever he has been. They are fairly young and inexperienced but he will bring them around.

    • Best part of #4:
      “GREAT open field tacklers”

I like Greaves and think his experience makes him worth hearing; he’s pretty straightforward with his opinions for someone now in the media/public eye.

  46. 1
    9

Sounds like we have the team I thought, but I’m getting concerned we won’t have a season. Cases exploding in CO, and I’d assume all over the US? In two weeks, as flu season sets in, the narrative could be completely different and pressure to cancel the season might grow.

    • I read somewhere that Miles doesn’t even have a full roster. Previous coaches relied too much on juco players and didn’t develop anybody and he had something like 70 kids on scholarship.

  47. So Beason has a great day. It’s a scrimmage. If Harrison is deemed eligible, how much will be play this year? Does he know the playbook and have the chemistry with Gebbia? Anyone that it’s out this year or can’t play is going to be way behind for next years due to lack of Pt.

Didn’t hear much about Lindsey or Bradford today. And two missed field goals around 34 yards but a make from 50+. Not good.

    • Smith tends to play the best available. Jermar played like crazy his freshman year (there was notable injuries). If beason gives you the bigger chance to win hes gonna play.

  48. Couple notes on the scrimmage:
-ahead of the scrimmage this “David Morris, who is in line to start at safety, will not be available…no serious injury, rather the Beavers are being cautious with Morris as he works his way back (from injuries)”

-More kudos for Musgrave: ““That group (the O line), along with the tight end. Teagan (Quitoriano) and Luke, I mean, Luke’s taken a huge step in the run game. We’re making real progress there.”

-tackling “was solid. I still think we can be a little bit better. We still had a few missed tackles.”

it’s not the same position/play but it’s the same psychology. Indiana goes for two to win in first overtime vs. Penn State. Win the game right here and now. Smith made the right call in Pullman.

    • 8
      3

Indiana was smart to go for it going up against the #8 team…no way you’re going to continue to hang as Indiana.
Totally different scenario. Smith’s terrible decision cost us a bowl.

    • 8
      1

Is the plan to use every 4th quarter 4th down conversion in the football this season and then use it as proof Smith made the right call in a game we should have won but ultimately lost?
If so, can we also post every game where a team with a lead punts the ball on 4th down and wins?

      • 6
        2

        Haha.
It also proves my point that by “Win the game right here and now” it’s the easy decision, because fans are less likely to criticize aggressive behavior. In our case, it was “Lose the game right here and now”…

        • 2
          2

sure it’s easy, Angry. Because it’s the right decision. Underdog. One play. win it here. Everyone does it, which is why I’ll wait in vain to see NB provide evidence of a coach with a touchdown or less lead inside the opponent’s 50 punting it. There’s lots of games left. You guys are on the clock.

        • 3
          4

Last week. South Carolina facing Auburn. Gamecocks leading by 8 with a little over 3 minutes remaining(plenty of time for Bo Nix and Auburn to mount a game winning drive if given a short field).
In Auburn territory, Cocks punt for a touchback. Auburn fails to score. Gamecocks win by 8. Smith made the wrong decision and cost Oregon State a bowl berth.

        • Good one, NB. You got me. Not. The amount of time left in the game is essential to my argument (and Smith’s logic model) and the emerging consensus in coaching circles about when to go for it. etc. One play/let’s win it here. This is the key point you guys keep missing.

With three minutes left in Pullman I think Smith would have punted too. Even if WSU scores he has to think he has a shot a getting the ball back; especially given the small amount of time WSU was taking to move down the field. You have have also created a false analogy. The amount of points in the game you cite was one half of what was going down in Pullman. Smith was in a track meet; not a defensive struggle. The fact remains: near the end of the game in Pullman the Coug offense was unstoppable. Smith knew it.

For what it’s worth; the reason you guys have to put up with my pointing out this dynamic to you is because the scenario Smith pursued persistently plays out. college and pro. I don’t go looking for examples; just casually watching the games the situation comes up over, and over, and over

By the way, you still haven’t proved that if the Smith had punted OSU would have won. The way I look at it, in that situation four things could have happened, and of three of them were bad. (1) bad snap, kick blocked; (2) kick returned for sizable yardage or a td; (3) punted into the end zone and you gain a net 24 yards in field position; (4)– the scenario Smith’s critics all presume would have happened, the Cougs get pinned inside the 10. And even in the 4th scenario there’s nothing to say WSU wouldn’t have scored anyway.

And why not end with a little irony, given this site’s storied history: Riley would have punted.

          • 1
            2

Going for it on 4th isn’t a new idea. I’m not sure why you’re writing about this so passionately as if it’s new. It seems more you just like that he was aggressive. Just say that instead of making this nonsensical argument.

“One play/let’s win it here. This is the key point you guys keep missing.”

No, we see it and get it. We just disagree with it. In fact, if there were 3 minutes left as you point out above, I think it would make more sense to go for it then. WSU had time working against them as well as an opponent. With 3 minutes, they just have a fatigued opponent working against them. You also forget it’s “One play/let’s lose it here”, too, which is what happened to us.

It came down to Smith getting greedy, not aggressive. He had it work for him the week before at ASU when Hodgins bailed out Luton (5 yard radius rule), and he liked how that felt, so he wanted to go for it again.

          • It will be impossible to come up with another situation that mirrors exactly what happened at WSU. The examples you’ve given have some similarities, but also some key differences. Time remaining, distance to 1st down, current score. In the case of Penn St Indiana it wasn’t even a punt/play option. It was go for 2 or play for the tie. Very different.

In the SC/Auburn example, the psychology is very similar to OSU/WSU. Bo Nix isn’t going to score in 1:00 as easily as WSU. Very different offense. But they could have easily gone on a 3 minute/final possession scoring drive. You’re assuming Auburn would be dumb enough to leave time for SC to mount another drive.

This has turned into an argument for aggressive vs non aggressive play calling. If that’s the case, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find examples where aggressive play calling backfires. A successful aggressive play for one team does not prove Smith making an agressive play call was the correct call, just as an successful non agressive play call doesn’t prove Smith made the wrong call. At that point, the best argument is Oregon State lost and didn’t go bowling last year. We’ll never know the other outcome.

          • He’s never going to concede because he likes that Smith was aggressive. To many this is great because Riley was so passive, so now any aggressive call, even if it’s stupid, is great. Just like if a guy dates a prude, and then for his next GF he chases a slut. This is how people are wired. What it will take for WB to stop being enamored with Smith’s “aggressive” calls is for them to keep failing. That’s the only way he will stop writing about it.

    • What lost Penn State the game was not going for 2 when they were up 27-20. Convert and they are up by 9; a two-possession lead.

Nobody wants to talk about why coaches are kicking extra points to go up by 8. It makes absolutely no sense to kick the extra point.

  50. Saw on the Twitter today, that fed investigators showed up at usc and at least 1 player has been suspended from the team. Something about fraud/ racketeering with the unemployment benefits. The whole story hasn’t really broke as there are way more questions than answers.

      • All I could find is the “jobs” these guys had was “reselling” used sneakers/football cleats, sometimes for more than $1000 a pair…like I said before more questions than answers

  51. What’s goin fellow angrybeavs, I know we’re all hyped to be getting revved up about the return of football in a couple weeks, but I know a lot us can’t wait for hoops to start up next month as well. If you’re as hopelessly and inexplicably devoted to Beaver men’s basketball as my buddy Andy and I, check out our new podcast The Payton Years. In our first episode of the 20-21 season we put last season to rest, go through the additions to the roster, and discuss the departure of assistant coach Gregg Gottlieb. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-payton-years/id1536831436 Here’s the link.

        • I think the only hope is if Lucas shoots very well and Ethan becomes very, very aggressive offensively. He shows flashes with nasty dunks and then will shoot 5 shots total in a game. Now that tees is gone tinkle better give the ball the best player and put shooters on the perimeter.

  52. What are you guys going to dress up as for Halloween? The lady and I just went through the entire Friday the 13th series, so I’m going as Jason. Half expecting we don’t get a single kid due to the virus…but at least I’ll entertain myself with this costume.

11-4 in pick ’em this week. I’m eyeing you, OOB.

(Actually looks like SweatyBeav is tied with OOB, and Bandits still a target I need to take out) ;)

  54. Watched most of the Mich/Minn game (sorry, BG).
Anyone else tired of the look to the sideline before EVERY offensive play?
And when is a team gonna use that “looking time” to mask a quick hitter?

  55. Wait, how is this not being talked about more in OSU media circles? Whitley of course is out right now, but the back up DT Evan Bennett wasnt available for the scrimmage yeaterday either? No explanation why. So I guess we’re just planning to line up 3 DE sized guys across the front and hope our swarming linebackers can make up for our size defficiencies up front.

    https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2020/10/five-takeaways-from-oregon-states-final-scrimmage-did-tristan-gebbia-win-the-starting-quarterback-job.html

    • It sounds like he was just out for that scrimmage.

It appears the Beavers have their starting tackles in Brandon Kipper on the right side, Joshua Gray on the left, and a veteran at center in redshirt senior Nathan Eldridge. There remains debate at both guard positions. Nous Keobounnam, Jake Levengood, Keli’i Monitbon and Korbin Sorensen all took turns with the No. 1 line at right and left guard. Those battles could go right into game week, and that’s OK. OSU needs some depth, and three of the four guard candidates are seniors.

Nice, the exact line I had. Keonounbaum and Levengood should win those positions.

    • Hope he’s not an opt out. Cody Anderson is our next biggest player and then shippen. Skelton I thought was heavier but I think he’s listed at about 270. Bennett still isn’t that big at 287.

  56. “Luton Lunacy?” Luton may get a chance if Minshew continues to struggle…sounds like Minshew has a number of TOs….

    https://www.nbcsports.com/northwest/oregon-state-beavers/report-jake-luton-may-get-opportunity-start-jacksonville

“Jake’s been awesome man,” said Gruden. “He’s, you know, got about everything you know people look for in a quarterback; he’s tall, throws an accurate ball, has a big arm. He’s actually, he’s really smart. He learned the offense very fast, and he really hadn’t needed much help there.

“I think [Jake has] been the biggest pleasant surprise, I would say—is his ability to come in here, learn, he plays with great poise and confidence for a young player.”

Head coach Doug Marrone echoed that sentiment: “I think Jake has done a really nice job for a young guy.”

That last bit is funny….what is he, 26? Good luck to him. The team has already tanked in hopes of getting the #1 draft choice, and Jake is being thrown into a bad situation. Maybe he can do well enough to get traded to a better team and situation.

  57. Thought I saw a Borat related post earlier but now I dont.
Was just going to mention I watched it. Thought it was pretty much on par with the last one. If you didnt like the last one, you won’t like this one.
What I found most amazing about it was a scene that didnt even make the final cut. The daughter character was able to make it into the Whitehouse and was able to physically stand within 20 or so feet of the President because she somehow convinced the OAN network reporter to bring her in as a media member. And from the looks of this clip it happened on more than one occasion since she was a short haired blonde in one clip and a long haired brunette in the other.
Doesn’t speak well for our President’s security team protocols that she was able to get this close with 2 different disguises.

    • That’s funny. I watched it and it wasn’t as good as the last one which is to be expected. I find myself always wondering how real things are and how they filmed it and what not and end up ruining it for myself. I’m probably going to watch it again since it’s on prime for free.

    • I didn’t care for this Borat, and I liked the first one. I couldn’t get past 15 minutes in this one. Found the daughter super annoying and everything felt staged, and catching rednecks in their racism was novel in ’06, but we see it every day on FB since so it’s not novel anymore. We put on Friday the 13th VII and laughed a lot more!

      • The daughter thing I didn’t care for either. I think you need to watch more than 15min to judge it tho. The Jewish jokes are still super gnarly even tho he’s done it before. So many people have got to just hate him which is funny to me.

        • I’m not going to watch it again, but I’ll try to find the Rudy scene everyone is talking about on YT so I’m at least up to date, culturally.

    • Related….but how is it the Beavers have had great success with controlling the spread of COVID? I’m guessing partially due to Corvallis is a small community with a smaller population. I just saw an article indicating the Ducks have to cancel their second scrimmage due to 5 positive results of COVID.

  58. Looks like the coaches threw the whole offense at the QBs in the scrimmage and Gebbia was the only one who could really handle it. The news about Jefferson having a good outing is very good news for the QBs. He can take a lot of the pressure off the QBs to carry the offense.

Kind of a disappointment that the defense didn’t have a better day. They should still be ahead of the offense at this point.

  59. Nick D has his 2 deep(not the actual 2 deep) after Saturday’s scrimmage.
    Lists Teagan Q over Musgrave.
    Nick Moore as QB2?

OL looks as expected. DL too, with Bennett as DT1 and Skelton backing him up.
Both Wright brothers are the backups at CB behind Austin and Dunn.
Surprised to see Mason Moran ahead of Alton Julian at safety, especially with what sounded like a couple of key defenisve plays by Julian in the scrimmage.

    • Probably just based on playing time in the scrimmage.

Comments for Smith, it seems like Nolan just doesn’t have the playbook down yet. Moore is the most tenured other than Gebbia. Not too worried about Nolan unless he fails to improve in the final scrimmage. Not sure if they will have one since season starts soon.

      Biggest surprise sure is Austin.

Biggest disappointment, all the jucos. Some didn’t even break the two deep. Shippen?

Musgrave and quitoriano are two different types of TEs. One is blocking the other recieving. Musgrave will come in on two TE sets would be my guess. Austin was apparently leading in interceptions through camp so sounds like he’s made strides. Haven’t heard much about Forrest. Would’ve thought he would be in the mix with all of the playing time he got last year but sounds like Austin surpassed him in the offseason.

  60. I had a feeling moore was making it hard on the coaches to keep him off the field. Smith said moore was moving the ball before scrimmage. Then said the next day whoever’s moves the ball no matter how it looks will play. I think if Gebbia didn’t have a good scrimmage moore would’ve been right there. It’s hard to argue with any of the depth chart without anyone seeing the practices. We don’t know how they’re playing and have progressed. A guy that wasn’t a highly ranked recruit could’ve been working his ass off to earn a starting spot.

  61. Wisconsin qb tested positive after first game.

I don’t think the Beavs have to worry as much. Corvallis has low cases and there hasn’t been an outbreak among students yet. Of course the opposite is true, they are very vulnerable to an outbreak since there have been so few cases.
