Thanksgiving week is one of my favorites of the year. Reminds me of playing football with friends as a kid, after eating a big dinner and napping. Just a special feel in the air this time of year.
On top of that, we get the Beavs the day after. Should be a fun few days.
I’m going with Oregon 35, Beavs 21. I don’t see the Beavs able to stop the speed or run game of Oregon. This Duck’s team is not that good, but they’re good enough to win by two scores. Anything can happen in these rivalries, but that’s the logical prediction.
Don forget Mickelson/Barkley versus Curry/Manning!
Is that PPV again?
Goodness, no one here like to play golf? and shit talk with your buddies at the same time?
Golly Gee, Beav…(need to be old to get that one)
I’m with you Homefry — will play Ocean Dunes prior to watching the game.
Golf is rad!
Yes! Love some small ball!
Go Beavs!
That would be fun to watch just for Barkleys terrible golf swing. Or did he finally get rid of that mental block that caused it?
I remember the first time I saw it. I was ready to call the cable company because I thought my cable box was glitching.
Supposedly major lessons. There’s no way they would put us through three hours of watching his old swing. Should be some good smack…
Well at least we get a good kickoff time. Can take advantage of the day and still don’t have to stay up past midnight. As far as the game goes I think UofO has too much talent, but I do think the Beavers will punch above their weight in this one but it won’t be enough… hope I am wrong.
Picks are up for both pools now. Keep in mind some games start earlier in the week this week.
And I pick the Beavs to cover the 13.5 pt spread but lose. Something tells me it will be an entertaining game with Smith/Lindgren/Cookus opening up the playbook for some attempted trickery. Hope they can convert like they did with the Gebbia reception last week.
I won’t be surprised to see a different version of that reverse/pass play.
I will be surprised to see much 2RB sets. Darn.
Go Beavs!
3 games this week…awesome!
Somebody tell the Gov to STFU. Not sure the banners they’re hanging will do the trick.
I feel like a lot of folks think getting their extended families sick is sticking it to the governor.
You mean by going to care homes and correctional facilities?? hahaha look at the data!!
Hospitilizations are getting pretty scary.
https://public.tableau.com/profile/oregon.health.authority.covid.19#!/vizhome/OregonCOVID-19HospitalCapacity/BedAvailabilitybyRegion
This data is not scary. I heard someone else refer to this same chart as “insane!”. The amount of freak-out over this still baffles my mind. It says very clearly above the bar graph that the data does not show the maximum capacity of hospitals. This is showing the baseline capacity of hospitals when there is no emergency or pandemic or flu season going on. To be efficient, they’re not going to have hundreds of empty beds just sitting around all the time. They want this baseline number of beds to always be near capacity, that represents efficiency, and then as need increases, so does their capacity. I was just looking at another graph on the same website, showing how during non-flu season of an average year the average percent of ER visits for flu-like/respiratory symptoms (aka covid-like symptoms) is 1.5%. We have been under that threshold for months, when I checked a few days ago it was at like 0.9% and holding steady. Just some perspective.
I should clarify my first sentence. This data is not scary TO ME. Others can choose to be scared by whatever they want, I just wish that they wouldn’t impose their fear onto everyone else.
Some clarification for these perspectives:
This data in of itself is not scary.
If one follows what the situation is in rural communities in the midwest, one should consider these other factors: any hospital having to convert non-ICU beds to ICU beds isn’t a good thing, any hospital having to convert rooms not originally ICU rooms, into ICU rooms, isn’t a good thing, having to add staff by repurposing staff from other departments onto the hospital floor isn’t a good thing, having to add staff by surging health care workers in from other states, only to find you are not able to do so because there is a nationwide lack of available staff, isn’t a good thing.
Empty beds don’t help if you have no staff available to care for you while you’re laying in it? Covid patients in ICU have to be moved 2-3x more often than usual ICU admitted patient — an ICU nurse typically handles 2 patients at a time, not so with covid. Need to be intubated? Great, now add an additional specialist, of which hospitals have fewer of.
Stating this isn’t imposing fear onto everyone else. Is this state in a better position, than other states? Somewhat. We don’t have the mass increases in positivity, but we have to be mindful we also do not possess the same level of hospital capacity or resources either. Small % increases in positivity for extended periods of time, gives opportunity for this disease to ramp away from what places are able to handle.
It can get away from you quickly, if you’re not careful. Which is what we see at present.
Hey, we made it 4 full posts before making the new thread political. Go ABs!
OSU vs Cal hoops Weds 4pm
OSU vs Northwest Fri 10am
Both games on Pac-12 network
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/basketball/osu-mens-basketball-beavers-now-open-season-against-cal-on-wednesday/article_e7ec5160-02b1-5e7d-8cea-ae8ee58408ef.amp.html?__twitter_impression=true
I think the bball season will be a scramble every week and full of reschedules and postponements. Might end up playing all game vs pac12 teams, just not all counting in the standings.
Beavs basically have no shot at winning vs Oregon. Too many holes on defense and not enough weapons on offense. Too many things need to go right for the Beavs to win.
Things that need to go right,
1. Jefferson has to get loose despite the Ducks stacking the box with no real deep threat from the Beavs WRs.
2. A WR or two will need to make a few plays out of nothing.
3. Special teams will need to come through again. Long returns, punts pinning the Ducks deep, blocked kick, cause a fumble.
4. Defense will need stop more than 50% on third downs. No missed tackles.
5. Rashed will need to make his presence known on defense. He hasn’t been put in a lot of positions to wreck havoc.
6. Gebbia can’t make any mistakes. No turnovers. Needs to get the offense into convertible third downs.
7. DBs will need to make a legit pick. They will be picked on all day long as they are terrible at covering deep.
8. DLine needs to get home a lot. Hit the QB.
9. Defense must be disciplined as Ducks use a lot of RPO and misdirection.
10. Playcalling on both sides needs to be good. Can’t afford throwaway plays.
11. Ducks will probably go for it on 4th down all the time. Need to make majority of these stops.
So at minimum, these 11 things need to go right. Is that too many?
Plus side, game is on ESPN so there will be more cameras for reviews. Unlike FS1 where it was legit 4-5 cameras and they got the 1st down line wrong on one drive!
If we go for it on fourth down no matter what distance and where on the field we will win!
That wouldn’t be a bad strategy this week, which means Smith won’t do it.
Only 11 things? Gee I thought we were underdogs this game.
It’s really easy for the Beavs to win.
All they need to do is keep the ball for 55 minutes.
Does that mean the Ducks score on the first play of every drive? I mean the Beavs went 2 for 2 last week.
Yeah. It just comes down to if we can kick extra points and convert 2-point conversions.
I am hoping for a surprise QB change announced morning of. With that, I think we have a chance. (Chance?)
If it’s Gebbia, we lose. Ducks stack the box and Gebbia can’t punish them for it. Not sure if we cover or not…spread seems about right but if I had to bet I’d take Oregon to cover.
Bottom line with Gebbia: he panics early and often. He’s leaving easy layups on the table every game: open WRs and wide open running lanes. Accuracy is bad even with a clean pocket, and accuracy issues are not easily fixed with any QB at any level. He’s got the physical tools and seems to understand the playbook and the offense well, but just isn’t cool under pressure. Doesn’t have the “IT” factor. I’m thinking his ceiling is low, and his floor’s not that great either. Let’s see what we’ve got in the next guy.
‘ Doesn’t have the “IT” factor.’ Says it all!! Some players look nervous but excited and want to jump right into the game. Gebbia looks like he’s accepted an invitation to a party but really doesn’t want to be there.
If we have Nolan, what makes you think that he’s going to outrun the Oregon defense?
He may not. Nolan could be terrible.
But, if he’s a good runner- that alone gives our offense a much-needed second dimension. I also think that a QB often has a big advantage in their first start, where the other team has no film to watch. Especially when they’ve spent the week game prepping for someone else. It’s not necessarily intuitive, but you see it all the time. New or backup QB has a great week one and a good-OK week two, and then the wheels fall off in week 3. Look no farther than Jake Luton for a great example!
There seems to be something baked into the DNA of OSU football against dual-threat QB’s. Wallace, McMaryion, and now possibly Nolan. Part of the Mike Riley coaching tree? On the other side, a lot of OSU QB’s have made it to the pros. That hasn’t lead to a lot of college wins though.
Agree on Gebbia not having the, “it factor”! There is nothing special to his game (hence why I drew the comparison between him and DG in an earlier post).
With QB play, “happy feet” is common for guys that are not comfortable in the pocket and have very little trust in the people around them. My analysis of his throws is that he has a very labored delivery (no, it’s not a birth joke). This simply means many of his throws are slow and lack fluidity. Some guys look like they’re throwing a watermelon (Gebbia, DG) , while others look like they’re throwing a “bee bee” (DA and Luton). You don’t need to be 6’7″ to do this either. The de Laura kid for WSU (True Frosh), maybe 6′ tall (in reality, not roster) but he was getting rid of the ball in a hurry. If you’re confident where the ball should be going and you have a decent arm, this should be happening more than not.
He is also a “ball patter”. It means he (Gebbia) pats the ball before throwing a majority of the time. And he holds the ball lower than he should post snap (on his drop back and as he climbs the pocket). Both of these things waste precious time and slow the release. One of the best collegiate QB coaches and best Head coaches in the country (Jeff Tedford) always taught his QBs to have the ball up on “the shelf”! Shelf= Ball is slightly above the back shoulder (close to the dominant side cheek bone). This is so the QB is not wasting any time with his release. When you hold the ball below the shoulder, and pat it, that takes time. If you notice, Gebbia has thrown behind to a lot of different receivers.
His “eye discipline” is in question as well. A QB should be able to move defenders with his eyes. Gebbia is staring down receivers from the pre-snap to his drop and as he steps. You will often see a lot of batted down balls when this happens too. Another reason why throws can be behind. There is no anticipation in his throws because he sees one thing and throws another. He’s throwing where the receiver is, not where they are going to be.
His footwork. Has a lot of problems setting his feet. Even on a rollout (like “boot”), QBs still need to turn and square their shoulders and work toward their target on (follow through) towards the intended target. He often keeps his shoulders nearly square to the sideline, while making throws downfield (this means he often throws across his body when rolling), big no no! He also leaves his feet. You lose your velocity and power when you do this.
The best throw that I have seen him make: set-up, set feet and drive the ball downfield on time, was the playaction TD throw to TE KQ vs Cal. Pretty deep drop but was the best throw he has made from start to finish (IMO).
In coaching, “small things, are ALL things”. Those who take care of details, are successful, period! There is no question about that. Those who lack details, it shows in their play and that usually translates their record as well.
Just my insight. Take/leave it.
Go Beavs!
Good stuff. There was a throw against one of the Washington’s, where he rolled to his right and I assumed he was throwing the ball away it was such a bad throw, but on replay, the receiver was wide open on the sideline and he threw it ten feet over his head. That low throw on a comeback route while the QB rolls out is a staple in today’s game because it’s hard to defend. I know it’s only one play, but it gave me pause.
Gebbia will start against the Ducks for sure. This will be the first team he’s started against twice, that’s about the only positive I can think of. He’ll still be super nervous going in and the Ducks will bring a ton of pressure. JS will wait too long to yank him and we’ll fall behind a lot. Then Nolan will come in the second half to fire up the team and make the score somewhat respectable, but we still lose by 10.
It will take a minimum of 4 picks from Gebbia for us to see Nolan on the field. Other then a blow out win (lol) im not seeing anything else that would get him there.
You’re probably right, I’m just being hopeful.
I assume Nolan gets some practice reps now and again?
Yes, indeed:
https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/football/osu-football-nolan-gets-some-reps-with-the-starters/article_b841f76a-18b9-58d8-a24b-8eebdc323d52.html
“If we need a spark”….. IMO they needed a spark at some point in each of the first three games. It wasn’t just a drive, it was multiple drives with nothing going.
I think the short drives are more a product of play calling vs Gebbia really messing things up. Prior to the second pick, he was at 70% completion rate. He was doing what was asked of him.
BYU at #9 in CFP rankings. They’ll definitely take the UW game now even if they have to wait.
oops #14. And now looks like Utah will play UW this weekend.
BYU has two open dates in December. If either of them work for the Beavs, I say why not. Beavs can think of it as their “bowl game”
All the teams on Tinder, swiping right or left on open dates…
Would beating the Beavs really move them up that much? I think it needs to be a higher ranked P-12 team to have any impact.
Isiah Hodgins sure is missed. I keep reading Gebbia is missing open receivers anyway, but Hodgins was a leader in terms of production and motivating for the same reason. Sounds like nobody is stepping up to be the #1 WR.
OSU is severely lacking talent and depth on both lines, which is UO’s strength. Is there genuine DI line talent is waiting in the RFR roster or current recruiting? Honest question.
UO has too much on the lines for OSU to deal with. Smith probably cares about this game more than Mario, and maybe installs some creative offensive packages or play calls that are fun once in a while, but UO should win handily and it probably wont’ be very interesting.
That has a chance to happen, but Oregon is not that good this year honestly. Not that we have been either, but they’ve played 2 backup qb and a true freshman, and barely won.
Their talent level looks more like a B- to B. They have a solid defense though, although I think is a step down from uw. We will see what happens, but I predict a close game honestly, likely losing, but not by a big margin.
If we had a difference maker at qb I think we would be 3-0 and favored. Really hope Gebbia becomes that player friday
Have you watched Oregon’s defensive line play? They given up huge yards on the ground so far this season. If the Beavers can get their ground game working, they might keep the game close. Hell, remember last year without Luton, on the road and Gebbia making his first start since HS and the Beavers were in the game until Jefferson fumbled it late. I think the Ducks win something like 40-27 but if the Beavers can get a few breaks, get Jefferson going, that puts less pressure on Gebbia to just go out there and manage the game. If I was the Ducks, I’d stack the box (stating the obvious of course) and force Gebbia to beat you with his arm. I don’t think the Beavers have the receivers to do it and, frankly, I don’t think Gebbia can do it either. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t think so. I agree with the comment if we had a difference maker at QB, we could be 3-0 instead of 1-2 but we don’t, we aren’t and will probably end up 1-3 after the Ducks game. Keep it close and you never know though. The Ducks haven’t been overwhelming and a bad bounce here and a bad bounce there…..we shall see.
Yep, I watched a little bit of them vs wsu and a little few plays vs UCLA. Their defense is behind uw undoubtedly. Oregon’s offense is ahead of uw though. I do think that our defense marchs up pretty well to what they run though.
I do think this game is close. Not going to call a win, nor would I against any Pac-12 team as we just aren’t a guarantee win team. But the odds aren’t much worse/better than the past 2 games that I can say
TURNOVERS, always important, particularly in a close game.
ucks got 28 pts off of UCLA turnovers while Bruins only manged 7.
If Beavs can even that out a W isn’t out of sight.
TO’s looked to be the only reason the Ducks won the game. I watched off and on, thought that UCLA outplayed them otherwise.
The Ducks are the youngest team in the country. They have 4 dozen true and/or redshirt freshman. They will win by 9
Apparently the transfer portals have been flooded with players! This is a good sign but it can be a double edged sword. We may lose some players too?! I hope we don’t but that’s the nature of the beast.
It would be interesting to see how a guy like DT J Whitley (yay I remembered his name) could do for this team, at least strictly on the defensive side?
I’m kind of surprised about the O Line honestly?! Great O Line coach, a transfer at Center, Kipper has gone backwards but he looked promising last season. There are a couple of players that were role players last year. Thought they would be a little better.
Oh well! There’s still hope.
Cool story though. Back in the early Riley days, there was a little guy, playing on the scout team as a 3rd string DB (as a frosh). Transferred over to Iowa State and became a near legendary QB there at 5’8″-5’9″. Then went on to play QB in the NFL as a pretty solid back-up. Anyone know who (without looking)?
Seneca Wallace
Sometimes, ya never know what you got, until they get a shot.
Go Beavs!
Bummer for BeaverGopher:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2020/11/24/covid-19-causes-gophers-to-cancel-game-with-no-18-wisconsin/115043802/
“For the first time in 114 years, the Minnesota-Wisconsin game has been bumped off the schedule.
Minnesota called off its annual battle with Wisconsin for Paul Bunyan’s Axe — which was slated for Saturday afternoon — due to an uptick in COVID-19 cases within the program. The decision made Tuesday by Minnesota will also likely make the 18th-ranked Badgers ineligible for the Big Ten championship game, because of two earlier canceled games.”
Lots of cancellations and rescheduling going on..
Yeah, that sucks even though we were going to get killed in all probability.
I think Lindgren tipped it off with his comment about if the offense was “stagnant”. Yes, they have been and may be again.
I like this Tweet:

P.S. Just realized I called it “The Civil War”…sorry not sorry, Libtards!
That’s awesome, IMO. I’ve either thought of it as the Civil War or the CW.
The media can call it what they want or don’t want. I’m calling it the Civil War until it ain’t no more.
Wait, did I just make a T-shirt??
Basically it’s still the Civil War to everybody except the 2 schools.
Beavs two point favorites today against Cal.
Wait…what?
I haven’t been online much this week, so maybe i’m missing something.
Bball, they were supposed to play a mini tourney with Colorado St and they had to cancel due to COVID
Oh, so league play starts today?
Non conference game
No.. California came up as part of the mini tournament in Corvallis.. both OSU and Cal were supposed to play CSU and NW university.. but CSU had to cancel the games.. so OSU-Cal were able schedule game against each other as NC game
Thanks for the info. Shows how little i follow OSU hoops
Glad I saw this. Checked score and was up 36-31 at half. No stats on espn.
Happy early Turkey day everyone! Be thankful for all ya have :). Turkey is all prepped waiting in the fridge till tomorrow.
Go Beavs!
I hope #18 Austin doesn’t see much of the field this week.. just re watched the Cal game, man he was constantly get burned time and time again in the first half.
Getting *
So was Dunn. And Wright on a td pass.
Don’t know who’s watching hoops but Alatishe is really good. I’d also like to see Lucas with more minutes. It’s refreshing to see the team with all these new guys playing and not the Tinkle/Thompson show.
I think this team will be better than last years. Tinkle will go back to doing what he should have been doing; defense, rebounding, and not showcasing the coaches kids.
I just started following was 61-47… now 65-55 uh oh
The new guys actually look like basketball players unlike some of Tinkle’s previous dubious JC finds. Alatishe is a stud. They dominated the boards. Rodrigue had 11 boards in limited playing time.
Next game is a coffee game Friday at 10 a.m. against the Northwest University Eagles.
Followed by WBB Saturday and Monday.
Beavs BB wins 71-63.
Now that that is out of the way maybe you’ll want to listen to Josh Worden’s latest podcast:
Marcus McMaryion: the quarterback who got away
Josh spends a little over a half hour with the only Beavs QB to beat the ucks since 2007!
https://wordenjosh.podbean.com/e/marcus-mcmaryion-the-quarterback-who-got-away/
Yup, guy ended up crushing it.
Mens bball with a fairly solid win today. Took the early lead and never trailed again. Cal made a couple runs but the Beavs held. Closest Cal got was within 5 in the second half. This is a much different team than the past few years. No stars but a lot of glue guys. One guy won’t have to carry the team. Feels like the floor is higher with this group. Doesn’t look like a last place team.
The new guys,
Alatishe – This guys looks for real. Using his length to rebound and create second chances. If he stays out of foul trouble, he’ll have a good season.
Calloo – Can see why he was a D1 player before. Has a decent game and can extend out to the 3pt line. He is susceptible to steals as he was stripped 3 times I think.
Andela – Rebounding machine. Guy who will make plays around the basket.
Johnson – didn’t do anything in his couple min.
The returners –
Thompson- a decent game but he missed a few easy shots and free throws. He really got the offense going in the first half.
Reichle – Played a pretty smart game. Take that all year.
Silva – Limited min and didn’t do anything to hurt the team. That’s all you ask for really.
Hollins – Has a real opportunity to step up here if he wants it. Missed free throws hurt what would have been a good game.
Lucas – Dude is clutch at the line but just really shaky shooting. Weird since he was such a prolific shooter in hs. If he gets that going, this team could really make a run.
Tucker – didn’t do much in his few min.
Curious to see Silver. He was rated higher than Andela and Calloo in the JC transfer rankings.
Is Hunt injured? He didn’t play and he played in every game last year. Doubt the other guys, Potts, Julian and Barnes see the floor other than blowouts.
Hunt had a concussion and Silver an ankle issue. When those two come back, we’ll have some solid depth. Wouldn’t surprise me if Silver ends up being the best shooter on the team. Plays defense too.
https://twitter.com/JesseSowaGT/status/1331764298880716800?s=19
Thanks. Some pretty good news it sounds like. It’s hard to be able to watch beaver basketball where I live so until they prove something i don’t want to go out of my way to watch if they play like they have played the last few years. What channel was it on?
I got it on Pac 12 on Dish (406). There is supposed to be a broadcast at 10:00 am on Friday with another team.
Dish 409 in my neck of the woods….
Tuck has a sprained ankle
Back to the comment about civil war and libtards….
You guys expect black guys to entertain you but you won’t listen to how offended they are by everything associated with slavery, jim crow, and any other shit you perpetuate because you think it is harmless. It isn’t harmless to them and you would know that if you listened to them.
It’s not slavery when you’re being paid handsomely to entertain people.
They could stop “entertaining us”.
There is that option.
And we don’t listen because we had nothing to do with slavery, Jim Crow laws, etc.
Not sure if you’ve picked up a history book recently. Maybe give it a shot?
But you voted for Trump because things went “too far” with Obama.
ASSume
Shit for brains
You’re supposed to clarify after my assumption. Play along.
You perpetuate the past by denying it. Ask a Black guy. Really.
Denied what? I never denied shit.
Not racism, not slavery, not Jim Crow laws. Nothing.
Get over it. It’s not 1950. It’s 2020 FFS and black people have just as much opportunity as anyone else in this country.
So you’d watch the NFL with no black players? Pay stadium season ticket fees? yeah right.
I think it’d be great if all the top African American recruits went to a place like Howard and kicked ass on the system. The 2 deep chart would be crazy (+ the 3 deep) and you’d watch who?
Who’s “us”? Not everyone on this board is white…
And furthermore you dumbass……
“ You guys expect black guys to entertain you but you won’t listen to how offended they are by everything associated with slavery, jim crow, and any other shit you perpetuate because you think it is harmless. It isn’t harmless to them and you would know that if you listened to them.”
When black people call each other the n word as a term of endearment, you lose any and ALL credibility. If it’s that offensive of a word, it shouldn’t be used by anyone at anytime.
Hypocrite much?
We get it though. You hate white people and choose to blame them for everything.
Uh you sound extremely ignorant and in your privelaged feelings. Who are you to speak on that word & credibility? It’s people like you who are part of the problem. “Black people have just as much opportunity in this country.” Truth is you know nothing of what it is like to be black and the experience of being treated as black in this country. So funny when white guys want to tell people what is racist & isn’t. You need to GTFOH and take a long look in the mirror.
Apparently all white people are “privileged”.
I guess hating someone else because of the color of their skin isn’t racist if you happen to not be white.
Isn’t that a “privilege” in itself?
Maybe it’s your attitude and not the color of your skin?
And spare me with your faux outrage mr glorified babysitter.
Believe it or not, many black people find your patronizing infuriating.
Except you come across as having few conversations with black people regarding race.
With only five underclassmen on the roster-and losing the Canadians over the summer – you get the sense that Tinkle has perhaps two years to make a significant upgrade in the program. By all means shift to recruiting juco players who can make an impact instead of freshman who never seem to develop.
He signed one player for 2021 and it was a juco. For 2022, he’ll need to bring in a couple high school guys plus jucos. Should be a big class. I don’t think there are any big time prospects in Oregon for the 2022 class.
Lamar Washington
Regardless of what Tinkle does over the next two years, he’s not going anywhere as he has 3 years left on his contract. With the department cuts, there’s not any money to buy him out. With that being said, if this team can find a consistent offense, we could surprise some people. This is the most athletic and as homefry said, long team, as we’ve had in a while. If they continue to play within themselves, they will be fun to watch as they learn to play together. I want Tinkle to succeed but don’t think he can recruit he can recruit at a high enough level to be a tournament contender every year. Best case is he keeps us competitive over the next 3 years and he leaves, turning the program over to someone who can take it to the next level.
My thing with Tinkle is the lack of player development, specifically the big men. No one ever seems to progress much under his tutelage. I don’t love his prospects long term. I do think he can run a program and do almost all of what is required of running a program like OSU except for the actual coaching parts. A bit like Riley in that regard. Everyone in town loves the guy but the last year even the honks are saying at some point the results matter more than just being a well liked guy.
I thought the Ducks have the “honks”. Wouldn’t the Beavs equivalent be something like the “slaps”?
I believe Rupp is responsible for the ‘big men.’ I’m nervous about mbb new roster excitement. Was the first game the high point? Before much coaching? My recollection without paying much attention to the program – not only was there no improvement but some players seemed to regress. Anybody know anything about the new coach?
Well, I was reading where it was one of the new coaches who recruited the new juco players and they look a hell of a lot better than before. Does anyone remember Dew and Stacy? Not close to being D-1level.
Wanted to go get the ball last night when rebounding. Length allowed success in gathering such ball. Lot’s of poor results with what seemed to be easy shots. I’m sure much of this was rust, rather than poor execution. Seems to be a more entertaining watch than previous years.
Does anyone know if a fake extra point is legal in college football? If so, it seems like something worth considering in the right scenario. I know it would be a lot more yardage to pick up than if you just try a normal 2 pt conversion, but if the defense is not covering it, then it could be a lot easier.
Yes, legal and isn’t any longer. In college the ball is placed at the 3 yard line for all points after touchdown so it is the same distance on a fake as it is on a non-fake.
In the NFL a fake is also still legal although you only ever see a team attempt something like that on a bad snap given how far away they are now.
Oh, good point about college. Seems like you would see it a lot more often.
Ron Rivera goes for it on 4th and 2 from the exact same spot as Smith’s call in Pullman last year. Washington converts, moves the probability of win to 100% with the ensuing TD.
It is the right call. Except when you don’t make it. Then it’s most obviously the wrong call of course.
So how is everyone feeling the day before the civil war? Hopefully you are all in good company and getting plenty to eat.
I think you can say that we’ve seen significant improvement from game 1 to now. The offensive line was horrible in pass protection, missed passes, dropped passes, terrible run defense and tackling, and blown coverages. Weve seen big improvement in pass protection, run D, and pass rush. I think Gebbia will be ok if he gets better blocking he will start to calm down. Game 1 he was sacked 4 times I think and they had several hits on him. He made some nice plays right as he was getting hit. I’m not saying he looks anywhere good enough to win us the pac 12 north but hopefully he can calm down and be decent. People are clamoring for nolan but he hasn’t even beat put moore for the number 2 job. Its listed as an either or. If this team continues to grow like they are and did last year I think they can possibly beat the ducks with a good gameplan like ucla had. They’ve been in every game in the 4th quarter. There isn’t much reason to think that they shouldn’t be tomorrow. Here is my reasoning for discussion.
1. The ducks aren’t as good as their ranking. The only reason they’re ranked that high is their name.
2. Reasons stated above. The team is improving week to week.
3. Gebbia played well against a better duck team last year.
4. UCLA exposed them Smith and lindgren should have seen some holes there.
5. The team is coming off of a win. It always helps build confidence.
6. Mental errors have been cleaned up quite a bit. No more bad snaps on the punt team, less drops, no missed fgs I think.
7. The team is starting to make plays with interceptions, blocked punts, big plays on offense.
8. It’s a rivalry game.
9. Our coaching staff is superior.
10. Last but not least Jermar Jefferson!
Hope you all have a happy Thanksgiving and GO BEAVS!
WBB canceled their first two games. No reason given yet.
Cancel that i was looking at old schedule. They play Saturday and Monday against some scrubs.
Gals play Sat at 2, Mon at 6; both livestreamed by The School.
Montana Western (Sat) and Carroll College (Mon).
No fans in the stands, a BIG change from recent years.
Mike McCarthy going for it on 4th down twice yesterday. Neither worked.
https://cowboyswire.usatoday.com/2020/11/27/mike-mccarthy-calls-cowboys-fake-punt-solid-play-call-twitter-disagrees/
He also went for it earlier in the year in a similar situation that Smith faced vs UW.
https://www.dallascowboys.com/news/mccarthy-explains-critical-4th-down-decision
Might be time to start a permanent “Going for it on 4th down” thread that auto-loads as the second thread on the page…. : )
When Smith punt on 1st down well know he’s a seriously problem gambler…
I still wish Smith would have punted at WSU and think the Beavs might have gone to a minor bowl and done well with all the extra practice time.
Can Gebbia quick-kick on 4th? If Lindsey is a good cover man that might be a good move at times dependent on context.
PHIL STEELE REPORT:
Last time here (‘18) on a Friday, neither team was ranked for the 3rd straight year. Oregon finished with a
season high 392 rush yards and dominated in Corvallis 55-15 (-18). Last year Oregon was off a bubble bursting
loss to Arizona State and had the Pac-12 title game on deck and led 17-3 at halftime (163-159 yd), thanks in part to a 99
yard KR TD and only led 17-10 when Oregon fumbled into the end zone for a touchback. Oregon St, led by backup QB Gebbia, down 17-10, was
stopped on downs at their own 27 and Oregon went 27/3/:52 for a TD with 1:15 left in a 24-10 win (-19.5). Oregon is 11-1 SU the last
12 meetings but Oregon St is 7-5 ATS. The visitor is 11-3 ATS the last 14. The Ducks need impressive wins if
they are going to make the playoff and opened 2-0 ATS in games that were much closer than the final. Last
week UCLA was without 9 players including DTR and rFr Chase Griffin started at QB with RB Felton rushing
for 167 yards. Oregon took advantage of 2 fumbles to lead 14-0 but trailed 17-14 when they got a 58 yd IR TD
at :00 by Happle to lead 21-17 going into halftime. Oregon had leads of 31-21 and 38-28 but UCLA down 3 had the ball but was stopped on downs..
QB Tyler Shough is hitting 66% with a 8-2 ratio and the D is holding foes to 5 ypg below their season
average. Oregon St came into the year with high expectations but opened 0-2 losing to Washington St despite a
29-21 FD edge and had a questionable 4&1 spot inside the Husky 10 and were SOD late in a 6-point loss.
QB Gebbia is now the starter and is hitting 62% with a 2-3 ratio and RB Jermar Jefferson has rushed for
449 (7.2) in just 3 games. Last week Gebbia had a TD passing, rushing and receiving (1st P12 QB s/1996).
OSU got a 75 yd TD run by Jefferson (196 rush) on the game’s first play but trailed 20-14 at halftime (Cal 317-164 yd). OSU had a FG, and a TD to open
the 3Q and led 24-20. Cal had 32/6 TD drive (after int), to retake the lead 27-24. OSU blocked a punt and drove 14/3 for a TD to go ahead 31-27 with 4:30 left. Cal drove to the 10 but was intercepted at the Oregon State 8. Smith is just 2-9-1 as a HD and Cristobal is 6-2 ATS as a AF. Oregon is +68 ypg and Oregon St is -80 ypg. Oregon is playing at an average game grade of 104.6 and OSU is at 92.5.

I had it at 35-21. Who needs computers??
First, didja check the Marcus McMaryon podcast linked above?
Second, Phil’s computer needs an update; he has ORE coaching staff +1.15 ?
This statement also seems strange to me:
“Oregon State RB’s vs Oregon LB’s: ORE +0.26”
Not nearly as strange as “Oregon State OL vs Oregon DL: ORST +0.21”
How bad can their DL be?
Exactly what I thought
Beavs MBB playing a lower level program on PAC-12 network. Beavs are crushing it as you would expect (but have not seen in previous years).
This team looks different that previous years. Especially on defense. Long, athletic guys. If the 3 ball is falling this year, this team could be fun to watch and be pretty successful.
Oh brother. Here we go. Beat pre-season #11 in the conference and now a team Linn-Benton could give a run and we get the “this team looks different this year” stuff
Decent start with Win over Cal in Non-conference play. Like the new big man OSU has. Truth is without Tres there is more flow to their offense now. Tinkle was such a scrappy guy but it wasn’t very pretty and wasn’t great flow. Now they have more guys playing as a unit and it is more cohesive. Ethan getting assists and shares the ball.
Beavs going to the Elite Eight this year.
Is that what they’re calling the P12 tourney quarterfinal?
Since you are a huge beaver fan you already know this but in the past we beat terrible teams by about 10 and had two players that could score. This is a big improvement. Super Bowl or bust!!!
Hey Blows, I wouldn’t be too cocky. The Beavs have had a decent amount of success against the Quacks and despite all their five-star recruits. Maybe if Altman had been able to get his Providence transfer rapist on board they never would have lost?
Well, thanks to injuries you’re right. That’s the only way it happened. Thankfully Bol sat out for you. Coming from a fan of a kiddie rapist (Heimlich), I wouldn’t talk to loudly. How’s he doing in Mexico? Still pitching for pesos?
The new guys all look like studs, but like you said, “playing a lower level program”.
NAIA school but beavers have length, perimeter shooters and look to be very athletic. This is probably the most athletic team that tinkle has ever assembled.
NAIA schools are basically extra high school.
Yes, but the Beavers won and won convincingly as they should have. While it was an NAIA school, previous Beaver teams would have struggled. However, this team at least meets the eyeball test for potential, athleticism, and overall team quickness. I’m not a huge MBB fan anyway, but it might be worth a watch given all of the new players on the roster. I guess time will tell as they get into conference play. Remember too that the last few seasons, the Beavers have pretty owned the Ducks with much lesser talent than what the Beavers appear to possess now……
Lmao. Athletic D2 talent. Can’t wait to watch
Just saw that Spencer Petras is starting for Iowa this year as a RS Soph. He’s struggled a bit but it still hurts.
