It’s hard to make predictions when a team loses to Sam Houston. These are two terrible teams, so you’re guaranteed a Saturday of incompetent football. Which is the less incompetent? I don’t know, but I’m going Tulsa since they’re at home.

Tulsa 17-10

Go Beavs! (Haha)

  1. Per ESPN most recent Bottom Rankings, OSU currently at #11. How do you lose to one of only two FBS schools that are winless and notl be in the Bottom 5? Either be the best or worst at what you do instead of almost the worst!

  2. This morning I typed into Google “frontrunner for oregon state football coach.” The AI Overview said Chryst and Vigen. But, according to it, other candidates mentioned are “Brennan Marion, Bryan Harsin, and [wait for it . . .] Trent Bray.”

    Thanks, AI!

  3. But seriously, who are the top candidates being talked about in the OSU Beaver articles/forums?
I’m too tuned out to follow.
I keep seeing Jamarcus Shephard(Alabama OC) on Twitter as a popular candidate among fans. Is that even realistic?
And I saw Rolo mentioned again today.
Just trying to cut through the clutter to see if we have a consolidated list at this point.

    • FWIW, of the names I’ve seen, I like the idea of Shephard. Seems like a good motivational speaker and also is supposedly a gifted offensive mind who is good with QBs.
Although I don’t know if that helps very much when his role gets moved into a HC role.
Similar to how we moved a gifted DC mind into a HC role with Bray. We didn’t get the best parts of Bray’s defensive mindset anymore and when he moved back to cover DC duties, the HC duties dropped in quality pretty rapidly.

Hate to say it, but Rolo seems like the guy who checks most of the boxes.
(except for possibly the most important box: Team player)

          Pros:
Had success as a HC at Hawaii which can be a challenging place to win
          Players seem to like him
          Offensive minded with OC experience
          QB coach
Never lost to a Jonathan Smith Beavs team
          Wants the job (allegedly)

          Cons:
          Surly and stubborn
Questionable ethics with signing of Jayden De Laura despite rape allegations(although technically, De Laura was a Mike Leach commit who stuck around when Mike Leach moved to MissState)

I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it either

I’d be disappointed with Rolo. One good year at Hawaii. Other than that it wasn’t great at HI or WSU. Doesn’t seem like a great recruiter and I question his Offensive genius based on what Cal has done. Not exciting snd seems too safe and boring. At least Chryst has a good track record. Maybe bring Cummings over as the OC since it would be a title promotion from WR coach. Still like taking a chance on the Alabama OC also but he’s probably making more now than he would as HC at OSU.

      • If we get Shepard, does that mean our WRs will suddenly be allowed to push off DBs and consistently get PI calls to keep drives alive? If so, I’m all for Shepard. He must have had something to do with Rome Odunze gaming the refs for 2 years solid at UW.

On the other hand, another young assistant elevated to HC with no experience kind of gives me hives. I don’t know why the list isn’t simply limited to FCS HCs who are winners and may want the opportunity.

      • You mean Traitor Smith cheated? The Oompah Loompah might have a hard time finding another job after MSU sends him down the chocolate river.

Oompah Loompah zippedy do, you got caught cheating and that’s not a good look for you. Scoreboard traitor!

          • …..don’t they. The article said violations in 22-24 unless I misread the brief article. It mentioned tucker but not smith. If it also happened in ’24, how couldn’t it fall under his leadership?

        • 2
          1

Might want to read it. Wasn’t under his watch. No vacated wins this year as all 3 ineligible players are no longer on the team.

          • I didn’t catch it was 2024:
The NCAA levied six- and five-year show-cause penalties against Khalif and Jordan, respectively, and a three-year show-cause against Tucker. Michigan State must also vacate all 14 wins between 2022-24 — including the five 2024 wins under first-year head coach Jonathan Smith — in which three ineligible players participated.

      • The nice part is it hampers their recruiting as well…’The Spartans also agreed to three years of postseason probation, a $30,000 fine plus 1.5-percent of the football program’s budget, a loss of official visits during two home games during the 2025 football season and one apiece during the 2026 and 2027 seasons, a reduction of 30 total recruiting days and a total six-week ban on recruiting communication through the 2027-28 academic year.’

Yonder man boober left for greener pastures and receives even more difficulties recruiting in a more difficult conference…chef’s kiss

    • Well that pretty much neuters the MSU football program! It essentially makes Smith nothing more than a figurehead of a dead program – relegated to the absolute bottom of the BIG 10. I hope he relishes it! OSU must look pretty good right about now; no matter how bad things are here, they are much worse where he is.

  4. 14

I am so apathetic, I don’t really care who the new HC is. How could he do worse than what we have? I guess go 0-12, but who cares? It’s all irrelevant.

  5. MBB down at half to Tx State 29-21. Poor shooting by both teams but TX State is a pretty physical team and is 3-0 so far. I don’t think Lake scored in the 1st half.

    • I guess it was North Tx not Tx State that the beavers beat…Too many teams on Texas or maybe I was just so jacked up about the comeback win, I got confused. Either way, North Tx is a very solid team so it a very solid win for the beavers. I wonder if Tx State is any good? Isn’t it Texas State joining the PAC next year?

  6. Beav Rugby update: McKalk Jr. and the boys head to Denver on Saturday for a NCR West Region tournament play-in game against, of all teams, Sam Houston St. The winner will play against Texas A&M the following Saturday in Nashville. SHSU is the favorite, but both schools are a hell of a lot better at Rugby than they are at football!

    • Lake ties it up with free throws and Texas State proceeds to call a timeout they didnt have.
Technical foul means 2 more Beav foul shots so they go up 2 and win in an improbable fashion

  7. Amazing comeback Beavs win 66-64 as tx st calls timeout with score tied but didn’t have any timeouts left so technical foul with lake hitting two FTs

  8. Every MBB win has been by one possession. North Texas was the first truly quality win. Hopefully they can keep the momentum going against Nike (who squeaked out wins against Rice and Hawaii).

  9. With a win or draw against San Diego, the Beavers (10-3-2, 6-0-2 WCC) will capture their first West Coast Conference championship as temporary members during the Pac-12’s restructuring.

Game is 7 p.m. Saturday at Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis. A live stream is available on ESPN+.

    • Anteaters is an away series this time but we do have Fullerton and Cal Poly coming to Goss.
Home and home with nike and a single game in Hillsboro vs Portland.
      That’ll do.

      • So few games at home this past year…Cal Poly and Fullerton at home are great…Went to a game at goss when Fullerton was here, they had this superfan with like def leppard vibe just yelling the whole game, super good natured though…anyway looks like a nice long home stretch

        • I count 27 games in Goss this year vs 20 during regular season last.
Superfan?……Anteaters used to take the cake in that category, not so much last year.

      • I was hoping to play Cal Poly on the road again, just like this last spring. Gave me an opportunity to watch games at the SLO campus. They have a really nice field and good fans there.

    • Anyone remember how many home games we had last year versus what we have next season? I know we had a ton of road game and I’m curious if it balanced out or if its about the same due to the independent schedule

  10. Not exactly a home schedule that makes someone want to pay more than they did last year. Curious what the cost per game is. Though it is good that the Beavs have games scheduled against ACC (Stanford) and SEC (Bama) teams for comparison sakes when it comes time to tourney seedings and rankings. To say that their early season games are crucial to how far they’ll go is an understatement.
Are the Beavs staying independent in baseball once the Pac-12 is at full-force?

    • Nope. This is the last season for an independent schedule. Still will have a bunch of out of conference games though as I don’t believe all schools have baseball.

    • The Pac 12 will only have a handful of teams that field a baseball program.

      SDSU
      Fresno
      WSU
      OSU
      Texas State
      Gonzaga
      Dallas Baptist (baseball only)

Colorado State, Boise and Utah State do not have baseball. Curious to see how they’re gonna schedule conference games with only 6 opponents. game conference series each weekend would only be 18 games. 4 would equal 24. Play a home and home with everyone?

That conference schedule shouldn’t scare anyone. Only Dallas Baptist has a solid baseball program outside of OSU

      • Texas State is getting better fast and is in a fertile recruiting area. Fresno has some history. SDSU has always had potential, and they’re just now investing in the program. Hell, half SDSU’s starters next year will likely be Beavs. Zags is always decent.

Baseball is a sport where home and homes do make sense–maybe not on a full schedule, but at least partially.

        • Smaller conference schedule also give the Beavs a chance to cherry pick some out of conference, away, RPI games that could really help post season seeding. The new Pac 12 in baseball isn’t exactly murder’s row.

The Beavs kind of gamed the system last year with a bunch of road wins against decent teams. If those wins were at home, very unlikely the Beavs would have been a national seed and would have had much tougher path to Omaha.

    • 4
      1

what nonsense. Per game, this year’s ticket costs less than last year. OSU has charged 550-600 dollars per season ticket for the past five years. The only variable is the number of games. this generally holds true for football too, fwiw.

  11. 1
    1

Baseball schedule is somewhat the same as last year. Playing essentially a big west conference schedule. Mutually beneficial to each other. Beavs boost up their strength of schedule and makes them the highest rated conference outside the p4. If they play well in their non con, could get more teams in than the big10.

What’s better about the schedule is the heavier home schedule later in the year. Last year, there were few series at home in April and May. This year it’s a lot. Much better experience for fans.

    • Great win as Tiara Bolden had a great game with 24 points and hit a key 3 pointer that really sealed the win over a very good Illini team with some good quickness, length, and really good 3 point shooters.

Great defense in the second half was really the difference. I just wonder how good this team could be if Cat F. wasn’t out for the season as they would really be a tough out. Despite Cat’s injury, this team is going to be very good if they stay healthy

    • Very nice win, read Illinois was a tournament team last year. Not sure how far they went..

Good crowd at Gill? Or good energy at least?

  12. 2

USC isn’t onboard with the private equity concept being pushed by Ohio St, so they are now threatening to go independent. USC destroyed the PAC12 over financial issues behind everyone’s back and justified it with Big10 cash, only to threaten independence a few years later. Conferences will be irrelevant sooner rather than later. I figure the networks will try to get out of their big media contracts and just sign individual school deals like ND has had for decades. It makes more sense to just cherry pick the schools they only talk about anyway.

Per O3 sports, Ed Ogeron has contacted Arky about the dismissal of Sam Pittman. This could potentially cross EO off the potential candidate list for the beavers. I still want to see Brent Vigen as the next HC for the beavers.

    • Orgeron hasn’t been a serious candidate for a while.

I’m told Vigen is still in the running, but a lot of people were higher on Chryst. However, I’m also told Shephard blew everyone away with his pitch. I also didn’t know Mitch Dahlen (Chris’ son and Matt’s brother) is key part of Shephard’s success.

      • That’ be nice to get Shephard/Dahlen to come back to the NW together. Would be a solid start to building a new offensive identity without OSU retreads, but still maintain a NW connection

      • I don’t know why anybody thinks it’s going to be anybody but a Riley retread, especially when that dipshit is part of the hiring committee…because only people who have coached at OSU would want to work for them. There’s no FCS winner or successful OC/DC that would ever like to treat this as a step up.

And people that say “I don’t want a coach that’s just going to use us as a stepping stone,” have zero memory of all coaches but Andersen/Bray moving on to greener pastures.

I’d rather have someone that turns our shit around for 3 seasons and shows us something new or at least plays to whatever strengths with have rather than limp dick pro-style offense that doesn’t have the personnel for it.

I really hope what you said about Shephard/Dahlen or that Vigen takes us on.

          • I may not have been clear, Jack.

I’m saying that the lazy ass media outlets keep pitching Chryst or other coaches that haven’t been in the game since NIL started as favorites, and people/ lazy ass media outlets believe that nobody on earth would ever want to apply for this job unless they worked for
Mike Riley or a former player.

There are dudes out there that want a chance to have more resources than FCS, have unique offensive and defensive approaches to the game, and would enjoy a 3-5 year contract with incentives to build this program.

Sadly, I think Riley is going to have way too much pull in this hiring committee but maybe there’s hope with the independent search firm.

Thanks for sharing what you know.

  14. Another 3 and out. It looks like the rah rah approach didn’t last long. Beavs nearly had another punt blocked puning from inside their own 5. This is going to be a beat down…

  15. Wow, incredibly bad start. Defense looked clueless after three solid games, missed assignments galore, and I saw a couple of players blatantly not hustling. Long snap bounced to Windsor, punt almost blocked. Is it all on the coaching, or are some of the players just not FBS quality, or even not coachable?

    • It’s a combination of all things. Coaching is ass. Some players have stopped listening, given up and just going through the motions. I am only watching for the lol. the fact this team won 2 games is an absolute miracle.

This entire program is a huge steaming liquishit of diarrhea and needs a complete flush of the bowl. Then the bowl needs to be cleaned again at least twice.

      When does baseball start????

  16. This team is as bad or worse than teams in the 28 year consecutive losing streak. Time to bring in Ti’a or Guthridge (sp). GJ can’t do squat either

  17. I love his “Beaverness”, but why does Walker return punts? He’s not a dynamic threat and has become a fair catch machine. I guess it wouldn’t surprise me if no one else on the team can catch a punt.

  18. Hear me out in this….or talk me off tbe ledge

Why do teams at a disadvantage monetarily try to beat the others at their own game????

Beavs should go back to a pro style or utilize an air raid offense with the next head coach.

The spread/read option is boring AF and everyone is running it. Fuck you Chip Kelly

  19. 10

Honestly, with the out of control spending in college football, there’s probably tens of programs that should just shut down and just focus on education and the less expensive sports…wait?!? Education?!?

      • If the game is on TV, that’s where the revenue comes in. However, how much longer can these networks continue to pay out the cash when the stadium is half to a third full on a Friday night game or Saturday night ‘after dark’? Somebody is going to blink and it maybe sooner than we all think.

  20. I’m at a point where I’m close to retirement and about to travel around the world for a while…or a decade. I find myself now not taking much outside of murder, assault, robbery, and child/elder abuse very seriously anymore, because I don’t have to. Maybe that’s why I can’t get enough of this football team. They are literally one of the worst teams in all of D1 history…and they give me the giggles like high quality laughing gas. Be proud…teams like this only come around now and then. I was at the toilet bowl in 1983. This team is worse.

    • I recently watched the toilet bowl on youtube. That team actually played hard on defense, but neither team could hold into the ball that day.
It was actually much more entertaining than the current brand of football we’re being subjected to

  21. 10

This team is ASS. Program is ASS. Leadership is ASS.

Considering it was 31-0 in the 4th quarter when he came into the game? You might want to think about the opponents personnel a little more

      • He should have had two throws picked off. While he did make some nice throws, I like the fact you put his performance into context…. 31-0, game over and backups. That said, I’d still start him over MM in the upcoming butt kicking WSU will put on the beavers

  22. Tulsa’s top 2 rushers today with 234 yards rushing at 6.1 and 6.8 YPC…but there was more, much more from several other players.

    WTH?!?

  23. I’ve just been transported to 1997. It was a Saturday and I didn’t really think about OSU football until I realized it was already a blowout loss. Chuckled to myself, “poor Beavs, they just aren’t winners…”, then continued my day without much more thought, emotion or care for OSU football. That was me in 1997 and all of a sudden I’m there again.

    • Yeah, but they were just almost ‘winners’ enough for the AD to initiate the BASF and raise ticket prices as Riley was about to take us to the promised land and get us over the hump.

  24. Mrs. Sweaty: “I’m sorry the Beavers are so awful at football this season ”
Me: “Aw… You don’t understand. I met you a year before I met a winning OSU football team.”
Mrs. Sweaty “OH my God. That is so sad.”

Beav Rugby update: Sam Houston State strikes again….defeated the Beavs 22-20 in the NCR playoffs in Denver, CO this afternoon. Beavs missed a penalty kick with about three minutes left that would have put them ahead.

  26. Looked at OSU official website for football. Schedule summary says they’re “0-0” in conference play even though they have beat WSU for one of their 2 victories….

  27. On YouTube, some guy named Max Browne argues Jensen Huang could totally chsngecOSU’s sports fortunes with $59M/year, AI, and NVIDIA, and how OSU could not be left out of next realignment….feature Oregon’s best beers and make it Tailgate Heaven…like that…

      • Texas tech spent a pretty penny. Ohio state does every year. It’s not just Nike. More programs are promising to up NIL next year. Lets just keep the arms race going.

    • 12

People have to come to the realization that Jensen isn’t going to be our Phil Knight. If he cared about sports at all, he would be a part of it. He’s obviously not so get over it. Lots on here and X say he should donate to help like he owes it to the team or something. He gave $50 damn million to the school for a different purpose., I feel like that is more than generous.

      • Yeah, I don’t expect it. He’s a businessman, he wants to make money, not burn it. I’m sure he knows college football economics are absurd.

    • Max Browne is a former USC QB and currently does college football broadcasts as the color commentary(CW/ESPN) A NW guy from Skyline in Washington.
I’ve always liked him as a media guy and he seems to always have OSU’s back, through thick and thin. I think he likes routing for the underdog, which I appreciate

  28. Watching a competent Beav sport with Men’s soccer, but they trail San Diego 3-2 with about 8 minutes left. Beav’s win or tie, and they are the WCC champs. If San Diego wins, I think it will be their fourth straight championship. Beavs should still make the NCAA playoffs.

  29. 13

Great job putting the third stringer in, letting him show enough where he’ll be the first one through the portal in January. :(

There have been bad teams that were out matched (the Pettibone years) and bad teams with bad locker rooms, (Anderson) but this team seems to be out matched, checked out and zero leadership. I’d love to talk to a coach who has been around a bit explain this season.

  30. 14

At this point they should just find an oversized headset and make Benny the head coach. I don’t think it would be any worse and it’d be absolutely hilarious.

      • I believe UConn is stuck being an independent for the foreseeable future with no access to the CFP. I think OSU is the better job long-term with the right head coach, but if he’s happy there….

  31. We’ve now lost to the 13th place team from the American Athletic Conference, the 11th place team from the Sunbelt and the 11th place team from Conference USA. Not good.

    • OSU is already in the bottom two of the upcoming Mountain PAC conference…administration has to be pretty embarrassed to “save” the conference then race to its bottom.

    • 2
      4

What expectations do you have for this season.

I mean, a bowl game was reasonable. The coaching sucked. The coach was fired. Then it was not reasonable.

Things have gone pretty much how they should go.

Amazing how fast Nike’s ugly uniforms spread across the NFL, and special editions searching vainly for symbolism other than, you know, the ram horns symbolize “Rams.”

“the “Midnight Mode” look is meant to reflect “the team’s deep connection to Los Angeles, the city where so many work in the dark to earn the spotlight.”

I don’t know why, but Virginia Tech getting James Franklin as a coach pisses me off as OSU will likely wait until all decent options are taken and then settle for some turd string option. The dude has a demonstrated history and was willing to go to a lower performer school. Frustrating.

    • As far as Franklin:
OSU would have been considered a step down from VT before we were relegated to the G5. Its a big step down now.
Aside from two 1 year stops in the 1990’s, Franklin has spent the last 30 years coaching east of the Mississippi.
VT is like 300 miles from Penn State and 400 miles from Vanderbilt. That’s a half day drive. The guy is staying in the area he built his life.
I don’t know of one factor that would lead a person to believe Franklin would entertain any school on the west coast.

The concern about OSU failing to take initiative, be bold or think outside the box. That’s well founded. The athletic department has been that way for a couple decades at least.

    • I almost guarantee Franklin wouldn’t even take a call from OSU. I can confidently say that OSU had zero chance of hiring him. No need to be pissed off. There are other things happening in the world that are far more important than being upset the #1 coach available didn’t take what is now considered a Group of 5 job.

  35. 1

Civil War hoops. Beavs down 14-7, but have 7 team fouls already in the first 5 minutes. Bittle is a handful, but how old is the dude? He’s going bald at 21?

Does it surprise anyone? Tinkle has buried the program but no one really seems to care.
Try running the numbers on how many guys have transferred out of the program before transferring was easy. It is an absurdly high number but Tinkle has his cheer squad of reporters and alum who seem ok with his act.

  36. “The Big Ten has presented a 24-team plan to the ACC, Big 12 and SEC, according to a report from Yahoo Sports. This model reportedly would include four automatic bids apiece for each of the Power Four conferences, plus two auto bids for the Group of Five. That comes to 18 of the 24 bids being awarded in auto-bid fashion.”

    • This feels like something the Big 12 and ACC should jump at. Would definitely be the end of conference championship games I’d assume.

It’s just dumb enough to pass. The old “every game matters” argument no longer exists in college football.

  37. 71-52 Beavs. Tiara Bolden finishes with 23 points. I think Sow had a double double and Shuler played her best offensive game with 12 or 14 points. Solid defensive effort against a scrappy but out-womanned team. This team gets better each week and really like what I see from Villa, WSU transfer.

  38. It’s early, but Rueck seems to be putting together a competitive team, though I’m sure the games will get tougher as the season progresses:

“The Beavers (4-0) pulled away from Utah State, 71-52, in a balanced effort at Gill Coliseum. They shot 48%, dominated the rebounding margin, 47-27, and had four players in double figures.

OSU was led by Tiara Bolden with 23 points — including 17 in the first half — 11 rebounds, and four steals. Towering center Néné Sow added 11 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks.”

Beavs remaining generous with 20 TOs…

  39. So here is some questions… OSU baseball, WBB, and everything besides football and MBB seems to be doing well in this new NIL age. My question is why isn’t football and MBB doing well? Is it because the NIL needed for football and MBB so much greater putting those to sports into a different level?

      • The coaching is the first thing. Players will come/stay for a great coach, given less NIL. Donors will also write bigger checks. Part of a depressed NIL fund is simply the perception of throwing good money at poor results.

        • At least he has a vision and is t just going through the motions.
I’m sure it sounds a bit hokey to some but if he is able to rally the area, he is doing something no one else has done for about 40 years in ASU

          • 8
            0

I’m curious if people here want that approach? I get that it could help try and keep the Beavers relevant in the changing college football landscape. I think besides the question “How can OSU be relevant in the college sports landscape?” there’s a question of “Should OSU take the means necessary to be relevant?” Its all a shitshow of a context. The “tradition” of college football (which featured bluebloods and many programs paying under the table) is gone…say Huang drops $50M a year on athletes, the coaches are begging American Dream to name pizza after their players, or Local Boyz to name dishes after players….would that be desirable?

I could be good with that IF there were at least 3 year deals for roster stablity, buyout clauses, academic standards, community service requirements…then they would at least seem like “Student Athletes” instead of bouncing from one team to another every year…

Next question: what would local restaurants name menu items after OSU players?

“Murphy’s Law: A tribute sammy to OSU QB Malik Murphy! Wonder Bread (Wonder why they signed him?). Single bologna slice. One American Cheese slice. No side. $25.50. This overpriced sammy is sure to leave you wanting more!”

“Between the 20s! A rectangular tribute pizza to Trent Walker! Red sauce, cheese. Neither goes to all the way to the edge of your pie, leaving lots of unfulfilled crust! Who wants to go all the way to the end zone anyway?!?”

            And so it goes…

    • Don’t under estimate the fact nearly every team stepped down a level competing in the WCC or independent.
As an example Volleyball had never been good, all the sudden very competitive.

Expect that to wear off unless OSU continues to fund its sports like a P4 and be a destination.

  40. It would be interesting if Dana Alan was the beavers HC what he could do with the current talent on this team? My guess is he’d at least get them to the big dance in March.

  41. “Death of the nosebleeds: …you will see that the sightlines in our stadium, the worst seat in the house, are 136 feet from the sideline,” Ryan said. “The most expensive seat at Notre Dame is 235 feet away. So, what we’ve done is we put people right on top of the action in a way that feels like it’s better than TV because you’re so close.” Pretty cool, 35K seat stadium with canopy coverage.

Thr fact that Chryst is still being interviewed and his connection to people on the hiring committee makes me think he has to be the leader in the clubhouse. It’s tough to overcome nepostism

    • 10

      Not everything is nepotism.

Chryst has a .660 winning percentage as an FBS head coach. He was Big Ten coach of the year twice.

Rather they hire him or not, it would be incompetence not to interview a person with that resume.

Chryst is a decent coach, but the current state of college football has left him behind. He got fired at Wisconsin because he was a lazy, weak recruiter, and was apparently uninterested in NIL and all that stuff, and viewed it as stupid distraction. He is a technician and not a CEO coach. He was successful because of the foundation and behind the scenes help that Barry Alvarez had in place in Madison. He is not the coach to lead us out of the abyss that we are currently in. We need a young, energetic coach, who is willing to take some risks, think outside the box and generate enthusiasm. It has to be someone with ambition to get to one of the now Power 4 conferences. If he leaves after a few years for a job, it’s means he’s done his job in elevating the program. Hopefully, we could get to a situation like Boise State where they kept having to replace good coaches that got hired away. I would be totally fine with that. That means we have a successful program. Barnes, however, I think is a big part of the problem. To use the military term, he seems to be retired on active duty.
You should listen to some of Paul Chryst’s news conferences.
A Chia pet has more charisma. I would be fine with him as an offensive coordinator, but hiring him as head coach would be the final nail in the coffin for this program!

    Go Beavs!

Wisconsin has systemic issues which held Chryst back. The fact that he could do less with more at Wiscy to even a bigger degree than Bike Riley did here is rather amazing. Bielema left because they fund recruiting at the lowest level of P5 schools. They also refused to give his assistants pay cuts or to pay a higher amount to get the assistants he wanted when one would leave. Andersen was something of a nut case, but he left because the school wouldn’t allow his traditional recruits (JUCO and sketch HS academic types) to enroll.

Michigan State (under Tucker) poached most of Wiscy’s recruiting department, and Chryst had a hard time trying to fill those positions, because they were in fact trying to offer a shoestring budget to pay all those people. It has continued up until recently, when a booster has committed to pony up some money for recruiting. Fickell has been complaining about all these same things and fighting the same uphill battle. Fickell simply isn’t as good a coach as Chryst is.

    • This is my concern as well. I just want this Riley nightmare to end, but here he is making the choice on who comes next. Hip hip horray!

      • Riley is 72(?), so the nightmare may not end for about another 10-15 years(?).

As he ages, forgiveness over leaving the school twice will increase, and his achievements will grow in specific relief in comparison to Bray, Andersen, and nearly everyone but Erickson and Smith…

Unless! OSU gets the next few hires right and supports the program financially somehow.

    • Too bad for him, but I hope he can retire with a healthy brain. While he might never had as many TDs as hoped/expected, he was/is a reliable, consummate professional. And quick/fast.

He played under some successful coaches, and is one “nepotism” hire I would be willing to see OSU make. Always very personable, and combined with his pro experience and credibility, could likely connect well with players in some role.

Buffalo, Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh, Rams speculated as teams that might pick Cooks up to address injuries. Be fun to see him get a ring with someone…

    • “The veteran hasn’t been the focal point of an offense in quite some time, but his totals numbers are certainly above average – posting 10,038 scrimmage yards and 62 total touchdowns on 787 touches.”

  44. Ha! SEC rattling sabers about leaving the CFP and taking their network (ESPN) with them if they don’t get enough teams in the CFP. Kentucky grumbling about going to a 9 game conference schedule because it only hurts SEC, helps other conferences…

It’s funny that when all of college football is getting blown up with so much money, NIL, and realignment, they pretend to hold on to some tradition with a subjective ranking system…I hope the SEC does leave the CFP…

    • At some point someone is gonna offer that top 10-12 brands a deal to break away and form a true national power conference and the winner of that conference will be the national champion too. And everyone else will go back to regional conferences.

      • Honestly that scenario may not be bad for schools like OSU. We are never going to have the money / influence of The Ohio State level programs. Those schools love it or hate it have built themselves to be the top dogs in college football over many years. Their brand is strong and they have the power. So having the Ohio State types separate might give the rest a more even playing field.
Outside of all that the only thing that can control the cat now that he is out of the bag is boundaries… a.k.a. NIL caps, team caps, transfer rules, contracts locking in players. These things in place will bring back a more even playing field and give the little guys a chance to be competitive.

. . . And, if everyone else goes back to regional conferences, their fans will have more fun.

A concerto in a glittering hall is one thing. But there’s something to be said for a fiddle on the back porch.

  46. joe beaver show podcast today – angie machado – not a SB fan. not so subtly said the committee isn’t getting as much input as she hoped they wd like.

    • Who’s her connection on the committee? When they hired Bray, I don’t remember her having much inside info as it seemed Barnes kept a tight lip tight ship. I’m not saying she’s wrong but I’m also wondering if she just doesn’t know.

      • Do you think Soccer has any long term future in college and at OSU?

I don’t/won’t watch it, but it is clearly gaining in popularity. Would decent crowds ever show up at Reser someday? Would Reser accommodate a soccer field?

        • Interesting thought. I just can’t imagine several thousand fans ever showing up. It looks like S. Carolina leads the nation with over 4000 fans a game, but 4k fans in Reser Stadium wouldn’t really work.
However, OSU has been a top college program over the past decade, 2-3 more good decades and things might really be different.

        • We already have semi-pro soccer in Oregon with the Timbers. They’re fairly popular but a big part of that is because they’re located in a populated area full of soccer fans.
I just don’t see it growing in the NCAA to the extent basketball has.
It’s also a sport where most of the players are not from the US, which probably hurts the chances to grow a local fanbase.
If MLS soccer ever gets to the point where it’s pulling in the best players in the world, then maybe college soccer will see the trickle down effects. But right now MLS is like the minor leagues.

          • MLS gets the scraps from other soccer leagues of the world. It’s minor league quality at best.
Plus they have teams that will never play head to head because some teams use field turf rather than grass. Miami will never play at Portland because Messi will not play on turf fields. And MLS allows that to exist. It’s not a serious league.

  47. Glad Mike Parker is getting a break with the Beavs hoop squad in the Virgin Islands. They guy has earned it suffering through this football season. But really, travelling that far to play Evansville, Akron or Iona and someone else seems like about as many miles as if they just took a Midwest roadie. Without the surf and sun of course.

  48. Cupcake weekend in the SEC! Several of their games have no line, but Georgia IS favored 43.5 over Charlotte….apparently Georgia often fails to cover these massive lines because Smart pulls starters, so maybe put your money there.

As always, betting is not an investment, and is for entertainment purposes only….

    • LSU’s former AD fired him for poor performance in October, then LSU fired their AD and came back and said the original firing wasn’t official because their old AD didnt have the authority to fire him and they wanted to re-fire him “for cause” this time. And this was after they tried to get him to settle for a smaller deal. They’re not going to win this and Kelly should stand firm and take the full $54M

  49. Per Egger twitter/X

    Selection committee for
    @BeaverFootball
head coach has interviewed all 8 candidates. The 3 finalists will be interviewed by Scott Barnes over the next week. We should see a new coach shortly after the season finale at Wazzu on Nov. 29.

    • Canzano also mentions there are 3 finalists who will be interviewing with Barnes next. And the committee was pretty split on their final 3, which I don’t love hearing.
He said ine cadidate may be a surprise to some, so based on all of this I’m guessing it’s Shephard/Chryst/Smith.

The thing I hate most about Smith is he was only successful with Bray as his DC. Outside if that period, his overall record has been garbage. And I can’t stand the gambler routine or his inability to develop quarterbacks. And he’s lost all goodwill with fans.
His lone strength to me was having a great OLine to play behind during his time at OSU and that credit goes to Coach M.

Shephard’s biggest knock is inexperience as a HC. That and he comes from outside the OSU family tree, both of which are a pretty big hurdles to overcome.

Chryst is probably the safest pick. Low risk low reward
Most experienced coach of that group, but will players respond to him?

I hope there’s another candidate outside of those 3

      • I can’t believe Smith would be considered a viable candidate, but this school does like taking back its football coaches…reminds me of that old The Offspring song “Self Esteem”

“Now I’ll relay this little bit
Happens more than I’d like to admit
Late at night, she knocks on my door
Drunk again and looking to score
Now I know I should say no but
It’s kind of hard when she’s ready to go
I may be dumb but I’m not a dweeb
        I’m just a sucker with no self-esteem”

      • I dropped the surprise name a couple weeks ago. Think NDSU.

Ryan Dinwiddie was also interested in getting out of Toronto, but not so much in going to the college ranks, in the end. He ended up moving to Ottawa.
