Home Football BYU @ OREGON STATE (pre-game)

BYU @ OREGON STATE (pre-game)

196

Oregon State is riding the high of their first victory, but I can't shake the nagging feeling that this process will be more "one step forward, two steps back" than full steam ahead.

Into town comes BYU. In many respects this is the perfect opponent for this week.

  • They are better than Arizona.
  • They're not as good as Arizona State.

Considering the Beavers played ASU tough and beat Arizona, BYU is in my opinion the perfect incremental test.

Unfortunately, I don't think they win the game. The reasons are several:

  1. BYU players are "more mature." This is a euphemism. Due to missions, BYU players are all 25+ years old. Normally, this might not be a big deal, but considering how many underdeveloped freshman are playing for the Beavs I think it's huge.
  2. BYU's passing attack is precise and methodical. The Beavers do not perform well versus tacticians.
  3. Bronco Mendenhall is a perfectionist and strong motivator. His team will be ready from the opening kickoff.
  4. Riley Nelson, the Cougar's new QB, is mobile. Mark Banker has not shown the ability to slow mobile QBs.
  5. BYU runs a 3-4 defense with three 300lb+ down linemen. Sean Mannion is going to see LB and DB blitzes for the first time. He has been turnover prone versus the more standard 4-3 defense, so it leads one to reason this might not turn out well. The LBs will be free to make plays in the run game, too.

The only clear advantage the Beavers have is their WRs versus the Cougar's DBs, but that will be marginalized if they're forced into a one-dimensional game.

In short, I really want to pick the Beavers in this game. I'm 80% on the year, with my only incorrect pick being Sacramento State. If I'm 67% on the year come Saturday afternoon I'll be a happy man. However, I just don't see it. I view Bronco Mendenhall as the better coach. Mike Riley & Co. have a ton to prove. Until they do it on the field, I'm not giving them the benefit of the doubt in these close match ups.

27-14, Cougars

  1. Also, it is odd the Beavers will be playing a team with the same name (“The Cougars”) two weeks in a row…has this ever happened?

    • In 1996 we opened with the Montana Grizzlies.

Then, in weeks 3 and 4 we played the Baylor Bears and the Cal Golden Bears.

We lost all three of those games, so clearly this is a bad sign – we only won 2 games the entire season. Thankfully, we did not play the UCLA Bruins that year.

      • When we played Cincy a couple years ago, didn’t we play the Zonies the week after? Bearcats/Wildcats?

We played BYU, NW and Houston enough way back when. But what were their mascots way back when? I think we played Syracuse and Stanford back-to-back in the early 60’s when they both had Indians as their mascot.

But the one true mascot “match” everyone should remember was also in that 1996 season. In the second win of the season (Pettibone’s last win and second-to-last game as a coach) the Beavs stomped all over Pettibone’s old team, the Huskies of Northern Illinois… the week after getting mangled in Seattle.

  2. FIRE BOBBY D, RILEY & CR!

Playing well for 1/2 of a game isn’t enough to get Riley off the hook.

Imo the thing OSU has going for it is no one thinks they’re a good team. It looked to me like that was the way UA was playing in the first half and by the time they got serious about it they couldn’t over come the deficit.

As was pointed out by someone in the previous thread the reaction by the UA AD is an indication of how highly regarded the Beav’s football team is. Too bad Bobby D didn’t have the balls to do the same after the Sact State game.

I don’t know about this year but in the past BYU has had an excellent passing game. If that’s the case then OSU’s D is going to be severely tested.

  3. I agree with all the individual points in your analysis.

Still, I like the Beavers’ chances against BYU this Saturday because:

    1. BYU has a weak running game this year
    2. BYU has a weak pass rush this year
    3. Largely as a result of #2, BYU has a weak pass defense this year

The Beavs on defense have looked particularly bad this year against teams with strong running attacks (Wisconsin, UCLA). That’s not BYU (although BYU’s mobile QB may change this equation…)

The Beavs on offense have looked particularly bad this year against teams with strong, fast pass rushers (especially ASU). Again, that’s not BYU (although the BYU 3-4 may cause some trouble for OSU’s pass protection).

Yes, BYU is a better team than AZ, but it’s all about matchups, and I think the Beavs match up well against BYU. This year’s BYU team is not in a position to exploit OSU’s biggest weaknesses. If the Cougars can’t run the ball effectively, and can’t pressure Mannion, the Beavs should win.

    • I too, like the Beavs chance this week. Normally playing an opponent who has had 4 of 6 games at home and hasn’t played earlier than 6 pm for five weeks might work in the Beavs favor, but the maturity of the Cougs probably offsets that.

Comes down to the head coaches for me. Yes, Bronco is a strong motivator. But in Riley’s way he has been more passionate the last few weeks and has put himself on the spot by mentioning the possibility of a bowl game. Put that together with the memory of the loss in Vegas and I think Riley comes out on top

  4. Beav’s can’t afford to keep giving away turnovers deep in their own territory. It seems to happen every week.
    Wisconsin= Hekker Shanked punt-Wisonsin scores
UCLA= Mannion butterfingers pass fumble=UCLA scores
Arizona= Mannion pick 6 on first play after Arizona scores early in 2nd half.

Those have all been huge momentum killers.

  5. I think Sean Mannion will have a big game. BYU gives up over 150 yds/gm rushing, so I think if Jovan Stevenson does indeed play he will have a shot at a 100 yds. If the Beavers had a better offensive line he would have an even bigger day, but even with this line I see Jovan having quite a bit of success running the ball. San Jose St had a good game passing against BYU and the Beavers are more talented at QB, WR and TE. Because of that I think the Beavers have a big day offensively. I think we will see even more improvement in Sean. I think he throws for 275 yds and three touchdowns, no picks.

BYU’s passing game has not been all that good this year. Jake Heaps could not move the ball so they brought in Riley Nelson. He’s a much better runner than thrower. He’ll have some good throws but also miss badly on some others. The Beavers defense has begun to start playing the ball in the air more and has been forcing turnovers. I see them forcing a couple turnovers from Riley Nelson and taking advantage.

Nelson will have some success against the Beavers but the Beavers will do a decent enough job that it won’t hurt them too much.

I think the Beavers take full control of the game from the opening kickoff and win comfortably 34-20.

  6. So Auburn gets a clean bill of health from the NCAA, even though 4 players admit to being offered money during recruitment, and Cam Newton is found to not have been in violation either. Auburn escapes any penalties and gets to keep their status as 2010/11 NCAA Champions. Duck fans are pissed. Maybe Oregon will get to vacate their loss from last year once they’re found guilty….

  7. im thinking this is going to be a very close game. i havent seen byu play very much other than the end of the utah state game, but from what their statistical rankings suggest they don’t do any one thing particularly well. im concerned about the age thing as well but i tend to think it wont be as big of a factor for some as it is others. (i feel like a kid like wynn just won’t give a shit whos across him). like angry says the biggest advantage is the beavers receivers over byu’s dbs, so the o line giving mannion time against the 3-4 is the key. on defense, im concerned about this quarterback, but im hoping the way the d line guys have stepped up will allow banker to drop seven into coverage most plays to keep him from scrambling while still getting some pressure from wynn fernando and crichton. (not to mention docotor took almost all the snaps away from robinson last week and im assuming will again on saturday.)

  8. I disagree. I think this could be a perfect time for them to split carries. I would have no problem with Stevenson and Agnew both got 13-15 carries. I don’t necessarily think the Beavers need just one main back. This would give Stevenson the opportunity to get plenty of playing time, he’s earned it as he’s ran fairly well. It also gives Agnew playing time without overworking him right now. Both guys deserve plenty of playing time and this would allow them to each get about the same amount of playing time. I think this would work when Agnew returns. With his history of injuries it makes sense to not overwork Agnew but still give him enough playing time.

    • That sounds like a good strategy. My point about Agnew was that he has only run vs Sac State, who are clearly dreadful. Fans act as if he’s done more impressive things. Sure, he looked good versus Sac State, but so would you and I.

I deleted my original comment because the logic was unsound on my part since Stevenson hasn’t run versus any great defenses either (though, at least he’s faced some D1 competition), and it wasn’t worth arguing or defending a bad point.

      • I would agree. There seems to be a lot of hype about how good Agnew but we don’t really know how good he is. His 1 big game(and only game) came against Sac St, a bad FCS team and the majority of it came in the second half when they were worn out. Stevenson has run really well against UCLA and Arizona. They’re bad teams but they’re definitely a big step up from Sac St. There has to be a wait and see approach with Agnew. If he were to have multiple big days against Pac-12 teams then people can get really excited about him and think he’s gonna do big things but we haven’t seen enough of him yet to get too excited.

      • My sentiments also, I don’t mean to be harsh, but Agnew hasn’t done anything yet except get injured in practice. He looked good in one half against lower level competition. I know we are all eager annoint the next heir to a great RB tradition, but we are going to have to be patient and also consider this team is not going to get there until the O-line improves.

  9. The front 3 of BYU is pretty impressive in contrast to OSU’s O-line. The lame play calls for runs up the middle will likely be ineffective, and the rare outside runs may be challenged by the 3-4 alignment. I think Beavs will get enough done through the air though and pull out a win. I won’t be at all surprised if they drop a game between BYU and Stanford – just Mike Riley style – lose a few you shouldn’t.

    • I guess if we consider the season “salvaged” at 6-6 with a lower tier bowl game, all of these games are one and done scenarios going forward. I don’t consider Stanford and Oregon winnable at this point. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

  10. Yes, people, Phil’s back with his weekly installment! Here goes nothin’:

The only recent meeting was the 2009 Las Vegas Bowl which BYU won 44-20 as a 4 Star Pick in our Double Bowl Issue and they were the dog covering by 26.5 points! BYU Head Coach Mendenhall is an Oregon State alumnus (2 year starter at S/LB and Captain) and a coach there for 4 years. Oregon State is 27-2 Straight Up in non-conference home games but did lose
to an FCS foe to start the season. Oregon State has notoriously struggled in September (9-14 Straight Up) but from October on has gone 33-14 Straight Up/Against The Spread including a win over Arizona last week, 37-27 (+1). Oregon State opened with a 27-6 lead before allowing Arizona to pull within 30-27 late 4th quarter. The defense stuffed Arizona on 4th &goal from the 2 then on 4th &6 from the Oregon State 24, Arizona’s pass was incomplete and the Beavers won 37-27. Mannion is averaging 256 yards per game (66%) but with a poor 4-7 ratio and Oregon State is still missing its top rushing threat Agnew (#1 rusher despite only playing 1 game, could start). BYU has finally found its run game as they averaged just 68 yards per game rushing the 1st 4, but have averaged 212 the last 2 although Oregon State’s defense is allowing just 130 yards per game. BYU built a 23-6 halftime lead and had 2 key interceptionss end San Jose State scoring threats in the 29-16 win (-13) last week. The QB reins were handed to Nelson (Heaps no snaps) and he finished 14-24-219 with a 3-2 ratio and added 65 rush yards as BYU finished with 25-18 first down and 443-325 yard edges. The offense and defenses are close, but Oregon State has a history of big rebounds starting in October.

    OREGON ST 27 Byu 23

    Feel free to react.

    • I think Phil is pretty accurate here. When teams are evenly matched, it usually boils down to ball security. BYU was a turnover machine against Utah and the Beavers have already commited 12 turnovers this year. We will see which way the ball bounces on Saturday.

    • Those look awful. I sound like an old man, but grown men should not be wearing basketball shoes unless you’re actually playing basketball or doing something else active in a gym. I just don’t understand this fascination with shoes…especially Nike’s. Put on a pair of loafers for god’s sake – you’re not 12 anymore.

    • “Phil Knight is my shepard, and I shall not want. Baaa! Baaa!”

Time for a mascot change in Eugene. Imagine what uniform accoutrements they could come up with with wool instead of feathers.

    • I’m not sure why they’re called the Pit Crew anymore. I mean, the real Pit is in New Mexico anyway (a below grade bowl for University Arena). The only reason Mac Court was called the pit was because the place was a total pit.

Are they saying that the TTATT is also a pit? It’s not. It’s just another sterile arena made in an era of sterile arena construction. And it’s only slightly below grade.

Btw… if you’re afraid of heights don’t ever purchase an upper deck ticket there. My wife (the UO alum in the house) will not be going back there to see any event unless she’s on the floor. The upper deck is extremely steep, and the sight lines still suck (though they are a ton better than Mac Court was). How can a school who gets their football stadium so right get their hoops arena so wrong?

      • “How can a school who gets their football stadium so right get their hoops arena so wrong?”

Because a Beaver designed and built one of them?

Fortunately, Ellerbe Becket didn’t completely ruin the original design of Autzen when they did the renovation.

  11. Thomas Tyner is going to be a member of the Evil Empire. He is visiting Ewegene again this Saturday. To my knowledge he has attended every home game there. I think the only OSU game he attended was the first game against Sacramento State. I know it’s early. However if Auburn was cleared by the NCAA for any wrong doing with Cam Newton, uo will probably be cleared as well. It will become the ultimate example of “duck luck”. The only way Tyner goes to OSU is if uo gets hit hard by the NCAA, and OSU has a mens track team. It is another example how the marketing, and product on the field of OSU, is losing a generation, the youth. Now days everyone is a fan of the “cool” team from down south. In the State of Oregon it’s now 80% uo, 20% OSU. Just 4 years ago it was probably more like 50/50.

    • My old man hates the Ducks as much as anyone, but he’s said that he ‘get’s it’.

You have a lot of people that aren’t OSU or UO alum in this state, and if you have no allegiance, who would you pull for?

      • I’d still pull for the Beavers. Teams that are constantly hyped and are the “cool” team like Oregon is not something that impresses. The uniforms would also mean nothing. I’ve always pulled for underdogs and teams that don’t get talked about much.

    • There’s a huge difference between Auburn and Nikegon in terms of who has said what.

Only one AU player who claimed to have received impermissible benefits even talked to investigators, and he had no evidence which could show he was speaking the truth while everyone supposedly involved denied all allegations. They were all outside the sphere of the NCAA investigators’ power, and they only had to deny them access to make the problem go away. Since nobody was thrown under the bus by the school (and presumably everyone got paid what they were promised), nobody was compelled to speak out.

And there was no paper trail.

Nikegon, on the other hand, has a paper trail, a jilted lover, more paper trails and players speaking in public about problems as if they were not problems. Except for Michael Dunigan and a couple other hoopsters, all the players involved are still within reach of NCAA investigative powers. In fact, that’s precisely why Dunigan ran away from Nikegon as fast as he did. And there’s another reason Javes Lewis did the same (and why Scott Grady isn’t there either). The NCAA supposedly has a lot of info on Nikegon’s dealings with “the family” in Detroit, since that group was well known before Kenny Payne ever came to Eugene. But I’ll be interested to see what they say about the Lewis/Grady issue.

The SEC schools know from experience not to even keep double books, because they will be found. And now USC knows to pay off its players’ debts. I wonder what Nikegon’s investigation will teach cheaters to avoid.

      • JackBeav,

Wow, you really know what truly is going on with Nikegon! Thank you for sharing your information and knowledge on the subject. Regardless of my hatred for Nikegon, I really want to see justice. Most of us have known that they have been shady for a very long time. I might feel differently about their recent success, had they been winning the right, and ethical way.

    • There’s a dOuchebag white boy rapper in Portland named Xile. He’s the guy that made that O-time music video this year. I’m adding the link for those who aren’t aware of him.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNMdv16tjj0

Would this guy be considered a booster? He’s advertising Oregon, he has special access to areas of the athletic facilities to shoot music videos, he works with Anthony Q Newman and other Duck alum. He sells his merchandise in the official duck store and his video is linked to their site:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNMdv16tjj0

The reason I ask is because he’s all over Thomas Tyner on Twitter. If you follow his conversations with Thomas, he sounds like a recruiter trying to impress Tyner. He’s asking Tyner his 40 time, he’s offering to come watch one of Tyner’s games and catch up with him at the game, he’s telling Tyner to “Keep it family, Keep it O-time”, asking when he’s going to be making his official visit to Oregon.

When you consider Xile’s relationship with the school, you can easily come to the conclusion that he is a booster. So how is his contact with Tyner not considered a recruiting violation?
It’s not unlike the Willie Lyles situation, but instead of a street agent, they’re using an entertainer to do the recruiting, in exchange for special access to the Oregon logo and locations for shooting a music video, as well as merchandise sales at the Duck store. This seems like a blatant violation and is totally dirty in my opinion.

        • Whoa! I don’t think we’re looking at anything serious here. But someone asked for a pumpkin helmet on the last thread. There’s one for you.

Love the Adidas plug there Skippy!

        • I looked up their compliance website and they way they describe a booster, this guy fits. They also explicitly say on the website that booster cannot have any contact with potential recruits.
I sent a message to Oregon’s compliance department as well as a few members of the local media and Oregon’s attorneys. Within a minute I received this reply from compliance. Doubt I will have any impact, but at least it may slow them down in their pursuit of Tyner.

“I appreciate you notifying us. We will look into it.”

    • UO made the smart move of going after those “independents” years ago in its marketing strategy. I am surprised at the number of Oregon fans that didn’t attend Oregon.

OSU has chosen to reach out and advertise to its alumni; a smaller base, a less fanatical base (just attend a game and see what I mean); and what should be a captive audience.

    • Tyner is a great fooball player, but from what I hear he is an even better track athlete and his future past college may lie there. OSU doesn’t have a mens track program. The fact that he is even considering OSU is suprising and a credit to whoever on the OSU staff is going after him. Odds are he’s going somewhere with a mens track program.

That being said if OSU had an established track program, I would expect nothing less of Riley and Co than to land him. But we don’t and that makes all the difference.

      • For his own sake, I would rather see him solely as a sprinter. He already has one concussion, and a second would put him in the at-risk category for a myriad of degenerative conditions later in life.

He has such a special ability in track and field that it would be a wash in terms of future wages in either sport (if he were to one day become an elite NFL RB… for the two or three years that would last).

And he had a hammy issue this summer while on the junior circuit. All those filled with angst over Agnew’s history would, by extension, take a pass on a kid with hammy AND concussion issues.

Of course, I would love for OSU to get the mens T&F program up and running. And I would love for someone of Tyner’s abilities to be the cornerstone of OSU’s comeback in the sport.

    • What on earth does the Cam Newton situation have in similarity with the UO violations? (wow,..i am typing and it suddenly decides to post) I am not saying that UO will get sanctioned (but I think they will) but there is a paper trail between the head coach and the apparently illegally recruited player in the UO situation.

    • So you think its all just due to COOL, and not to the huge success of the UO football program the last few years, and the huge decline of the OSU program in that same time period….? If so, I think you are wrong. Reverse the success and watch what happens.

      • rsteve503,

Yes, I know that the success of the team down south has a lot to do with their increased popularity. It is the whole chicken and the egg debate. What came first the publicity, marketing, hype? Or success?

For Oregon State to take the next step, higher than a 3rd place finish in conference, higher bowl game than the Sun Bowl, and less than 4 losses…….

First (1) OSU must become cutting edge, more aggressive in their marketing, gain a little more swag to get better recruits. Get better recruits, you win more games. Sell more merchandise to make more revenue, and market your product everytime someone wears OSU gear. Better marketing, more donors, more rear-ends in seats. More money, you $ee?

Second (2) OSU must change up their scheme, especially offensively! OSU’s offense needs to try to put up at least 42 points per game in the new Pac-12, they need to learn to put teams away for good and break down opposing teams will. I think model Boise State’s, and/or Oklahoma’s offense. Instead of settling all of the time, (settling for field goals in the Red Zone instead of Touchdowns.) settling for winning by 10 points or less instead of winning by 20+ etc.

Just my opinion, but I know this would really help.

        • So you’re essentially saying that Oregon State should model Oregon to have any kind of success? I realize you tried to say we should model our offense after BSU & Oklahoma, but really you’re saying we should adopt Oregon’s marketing plan and try to score a lot of points.

Where does this thinking come from the Oregon has progressed the last 5-10 years and Oregon State has regressed? I don’t see how 6 or 7 bowl games and two “win and you’re in” civil war games equals regression.

  12. I got a much better feeling about this game then I ever did the Arizona game. The 3-4 will be an interesting test for Mannion and the blocking up front (might see lot of Jenkins). I know people don’t think our O-line can handle the beef but I worry more about speed of the DE’s which is why Jarret destroyed Remmers and why I think if BYU wants pressure they are going to have to rush 5 which plays into our hands if Mannion is making good decisions.

  13. Not a big fan of the move to not start Andrews. If he is good to go you got to find room for Andrews and Enger. Either shift Enger to OT or RG and bring Andrews back in at LG.

  14. (Off topic) But, what would happen or if Phil Knight paid for the recruiting services to get him the good stuff, that wouldn’t affect the school would it?

    • Not sure what you’re asking. Yes, it would affect the school if he were caught because he’s a booster. But the NCAA has no power to call him in for an interview, let alone look at his personal papers and dealings. So him getting caught would be about as likely as Nike moving all their manufacturing to the US and providing American jobs.

I think the NCAA has some interest in the Yelverton situation, DeAnthony Thomas’ “handlers” and several different hoops AAU organizations. But those situations are so hard to prove without a whistle-blower.

    • I think Knight could easily get caught, as all it takes is someone ratting on him, or a player or recruiter having to explain where his money came from. Remember that the NCAA isnt pursuing a legal issue, its pursuing opinions. If its opinion is that Knight paid, then he did. They dont have to prove anything.

In the case of Lyles, the 25k came from the school, authorized by the athletic dept.

  15. This morning radio 750 AM reports that Riley said if Agnew can’t go this Saturday they will pursue a medical redshirt for him this season.
If this is true, I agree.

Also, is Jovan out with that concussion for this Sat?

    • Re: Jovan…he practiced yesterday, so I think he’s probably good to go. What I heard at the time was he had ‘concussion symptoms’ and maybe not a full blown concussion.

    • I don’t think OSU coaching staff should ever plan on Agnew being there for a full season. He has hamstring issues, plan and simple. He had them last year and sat out several games, and didn’t make it to week 2 at this level.

His hamstring issues are particularly at odds with Riley’s preference for 1) running the starting rb into the ground, and 2) thereby developing other RB’s on the roster. Riley creates a chicken/egg problem for himself; back up RBs never get carries, back up RB’s don’t get to play because they lack game experience.

I suspect another year off isn’t going to resolve Agnew’s issues. I like the strategy suggested above – give him 10-15 carries a game, give another 10-15 to Stevenson or other secondary back. Also, split time in practice to maintain Agnew’s fragile hamstrings and develop other players.

      • I know Riley has said in the past he prefers a 1 back system but I think some of it has been the obvious divide between the No. 1 and No. 2 back. I think we could definitely see more sharing of the load in the future.

      • Is it just me but I love the sound of Jovan Stevenson being are main back, because we don’t really even know how good Agnew is versus a real opponent.

      • A hamstring “pull” covers a lot of ground but generally a true 100% “pull” means you have torn your hamstring and are out action for 6 months to a year.

If Malcom can recover from a “pull” in less than that time it is more likely a partial tear or most likely merely a strain. From all descriptions he is very muscular and wound tight so warming up well and stretching is most important. Scar tissue tends to build up at the tear site and is less elastic than the surrounding muscle but can be treated somewhat with ultrasound. Hopefully the medical staff can get an appropriate individual program for him going forward.

        • A chance for the new trainer to really show her ability.

100% agree with the thought that riding a single RB all season is a recipe for trouble, not only wears out your best RB but eliminates the chance for development of future #1’s.

    • I know it’s just perception, but I hate how Beav players seem so slow to return from injuries whereas the Duck players act like they will be back next week. I almost wonder if Riley should withhold injury information too.

  16. Back to the subject, BYU is another team we should beat. If we get it together like with AZ, we may. But this season we are a string of dufus plays waiting to happen. IMO, its all on the coaches to make it happen.

    • We won’t win if we don’t put up points in the second half and I wish we wouldn’t play conservative when we have the lead. We should play our game the WHOLE GAME. Throw the score out of the equation! Just play and look at the score board at the end of the game! We need to play as though we are behind even if we’re ahead!

  17. I realize he is a good coach but…
Bronco sounds like a porn star name.
Bronco Mendenhall sounds like a porn star name in a Woody Allen movie.

  18. It is hard to see Tyner coming to play for us when he has seen LaMichael run for 200+ for several weeks. He must be salivating over the lanes he gets to run through. In the mean time he sees our shitty offensive line get pushed around each week. I would be extremely shocked if he came here. Further, If he does not got to Eugene, I bet he goes to SC or some other program. Sadly, we just are not in a position to attract these kinds of kids right now (unless their parents are on the staff). What does his dad do again?

      • I don’t really think Cal has a better option at this point. He’ll be the starter and I have complete confidence the Beavers blow Cal out. If the Beavers force him out of the pocket to his right he has no shot of completing the pass. I’ve never seen a QB who literally could not complete a pass at all moving to one side. He’s mobile but sometimes he gets scared in the pocket and backs into sacks. I’ve never seen a QB back into sacks constantly. I really like their RB but their pathetic QB play holds them way back offensively.

  19. Hi Beaver Nation.. Its me the old coach. Bonus coverage…. on the road. I’m using Larry, the bus drivers, fancy email phone. We’re stopped somewhere in Idaho for dinner. I’m taking real good care of the bronze beaver.
Larry couldn’t believe that I was the head coach at OSU. He believed I was a coach, he didn’t believe Oregon State had a football team.
I was able to stop by the Boise State practice. Coach Peterson waved over to me a couple of times but was too busy to stop over to talk. I left few play diagrams with the student manager. He said that Coach Peterson “really appreciated” my interest. Watch for some veer option in Boise State’s upcoming games
Got to go… Larry has a schedule to keep. He’s asked me sit right up front with him! JB

PS: Susy… I lent a guy on the bus $20, he’s going to mail me $40. What a chump..watch for the check.

    • While you were there, you shoulda asked Petersen if he had any interest in Corvallis after he loses his stud QB at the end of the year.

    • My little doggie is starting to bore me. Does anyone want to pwn my doggie for me? There will be a temptation to point to all the holes in his swiss cheese of a wit, but that would take eons. Rather, one would better use their time just playing along, trying to keep him somewhere within his own wheelhouse. Clearly, he doesn’t know where he has been, where he is or where he’s going. But we can make an effort to keep him lucid long enough to know that we at least have pity.

We can just “lol” at all his comments. I think my little doggie would really enjoy that. Or we could just play with him.

      ( | )

Ha! Poor Susy is going to have to clean his “pooter screen” off forever with all the nose prints he’s putting on the screen right now.

Oh well, enough pity for my little doggie. Let’s see if we can get him to come back. He’s not likely to be smart enough to respond. But we can try.

Here little doggie. Come here boy.

        • No. They limit it to one vote per IP address. Plus, that would likely be illegal/viral, not worth going to jail just advance Benny Beaver.

          • You can vote by text message unlimited amount of times. But still it”s a l..o..n..g shot for this week. I usually vote for Benny and for whoever is running against puddles (AKA: the duck).

Again, if OSU was on TV more, and had a better product on the field this season then Benny would have more votes. Benny needs to become more involved and active with the crowd, and find more ways to get on TV during games.

          • I have never heard them give any info at the games. Put Benny on the damcam and have people vote for him. Or kiosks around the stadium. Our marketing sucks!!!

    • I cannot in good faith vote for that Benny. It’s neat if OSU wins something. But the win brings national exposure to a mascot who is ratty and ugly, looks nothing like a beaver, and looks nothing like the ugly, angry muskrat we use as a logo.

      This is my Benny:
      http://osubeaverstore.com/MerchItem.asp?CatalogGroupID=76&CatalogItemID=7581&Big=False&XO=False&A=00
This is the same Benny who walked the sidelines at sporting events. And it’s the same Benny whose likeness is easily produced for plushes and trinkets. My kids love this Benny. Teens love this Benny. People who never went to the school think this Benny is cool. And I’m pretty sure people who did go to the school in the last century love this Benny by a large majority. He’s cool, and he gives you a knowing look. It’s almost like he’s about to wink at you, he’s so cool.

The angry muskrat would be fine if it was even slightly cool. But it’s not. Hell, if you could find a plush and give it to an infant there would be no way it becomes the child’s favorite toy. Teens think it’s a joke. People east of the Rockies have no idea what it signifies or represents. They all think it’s a joke (in the same way teens do).

That’s not the case with my Benny. He is easily recognized. The OSU on his cap kinda tells the world that he’s an OSU Beaver. There’s no need to explain to people in an ugly font underneath an ugly likeness what that likeness is supposed to be… and then forget to tell the world where he’s from.

There’s also a reason Nikegon has kept their same mascot through the years despite him historically being the most uncool, angst-ridden, paranoid and jealous misfit of a Disney character there is. He’s recognizable, and he’s non-threatening. I don’t know anyone who can say anything bad about Donald as a mascot. Even I, knowing his precise history of the character and his personality, have nothing to say in a poor light about him. He’ll never be cool, but he will always be well liked.

Our angry muskrat is precisely the equivalent of Roboduck in the world’s eyes. But in our wisdom we eschewed generations of tradition for something that looks like a bunch of fifty-something men without taste thought would be “cool to the kids”… without talking to the kids.

      • You are spot on. Bring back real Benny! Cute is better for marketing. Funny how Millers teams did OK with him as the mascot. Retro cool is in. I live in Minneapolis and everyone here knows the Duck(Ducks) and nobody knows the Beavers. When I tell people that I went to Oregon State, they ALWAYS say, “the Ducks right?” The current Benny looks like something that got laid by one of the hillbillies from Deliverance. He is butt ugly and an affront to our school. Meanwhile the Duck might as well be ESPN’s mascot. At the U of M, our football team may really suck, but Goldy Gopher is great and I don’t cringe when I see him on TV. I just bought a retro Benny flag to fly in the tailgating lot at the U of Minnesota games. Go Beavs!

        • If it weren’t for the Back to Back NC’s in Baseball, no one in Omaha would know either. I see a rare Beavs sticker, hat, shirt, etc…but I see that Yellow/Green damned O everywhere.

And being in ‘former’ Big 12 country, the black and orange OSU is Oklahoma State. I get that all the time…even when I wear my OS shirt.

  20. Cal qb is in the wrong offense and Tedford cannot adjust his offense to match his talent. Backup qbs for Cal are statues (not very accurate either) and need to use pro offense to function. Cal, much like OSU has talented outside skill people but can’t get them the ball enough. But at least OSU is on the cusp of figuring things out offensively. Tedford is no qb guru and his assistants evaluate and recruit better talent than he does.

OSU needs to have a scout at CCSF vs Butte College on Saturday. There are several players on both teams and on both sides of the ball (including an OT from Eugene) that could play for OSU right now…assuming they can read and write and have an academic pulse.

Off topic but friend of mine (current Dl defensive coordinator) was interviewed and for job and he turned down a job with Nick Saban several years ago when he found out the assistants had a different name for the coach. He was known as Nick Satan by his own staff.

      • Guys go to jc for all kinds of reasons. Danny Watkins had never played football and went to jc to attend the fire academy. Aaron Rodgers needed to physically mature but had good enough hs grades and SAT to get into any university including all ivy league schools.

        • Those differences are noted by their statuses while in a JUCO. Rodgers was a frosh eligible player who transferred to Cal after one year. Most JUCO kids are there until they receive an associates degree because they would not be eligible for D1 otherwise.

There are other reasons for them to end up there besides their overall intelligence. Some have learning disabilities which were never fully or correctly addressed while in high school. Many Poly kids end up in JUCOs because they fail to qualify due to language issues. Only a small minority go because they need exposure. If they feel underexposed (or just barely miss qualifying standards), many of those who would otherwise qualify end up going the prep school route for one year to retain their eligibility.

      • Chad Johnson aka Ocho Cinco was a JC and if you have ever watched the T.Ocho show you would know how intelligent he is… um wait, maybe I just proved your point.
He sure was good on the football field.

    • I think you mean Charles Siddoway as that OL from Eugene? He couldn’t qualify out of HS, so he’ll be staying another year at least.

I hear this kid Simi Kuli is available. Supposed to be a beast!

    • I love it when the ESPN announcers repeatedly call Tedford a QB guru. It happens every year. He hasn’t had a worthwhile QB since Aaron Rogers. In fact, I’d argue that Tedford is horrible at coaching up QBs. Its usually the biggest reason why they suck every year. IMO Cal is as big of a talent black hole as UCLA has been for the last 7 or 8 years. They put out a ridiculous amount of early round NFL draft picks and do nothing at the college level except make it to low-tier bowl games.

Coach Riley takes a lot of abuse on this site and others, but frankly, I’d much rather have Riley than most other coaches in the conference. He can’t recruit for shit, but he does know how to coach. I think that’s better than the alternative.

  21. Espn is reporting that the big east is offering football only memberships to boise st, navy, airforce and central florida. Talk about some long road trips…

    • from the article “ESPN’s many conflicts of interest” yeah like the payoff from the ducks to have their mascot on sportscenter 24-7

  22. Hi Beaver Nation, It me again the old coach.

I’ll see you all at the big meet and greet! 7:00 Bob’s Hamburgers. I anticipate a huge turnout so be patient, I promise to sign an autograph for each you. No matter how long it takes… I’m that kind of guy.. a people person.

For those of you driving down I-5 tonight plan on delays. Because of the “big game” tomorrow the freeway is very slow. Once you reach the Corvallis Exit #228 the traffic vanishes and you will have clear sailing.

I can’t disclose where I’m staying out of respect for their privacy. Nice OSU family. Initials BD. I can’t disclose what we’re going to discuss, but is starts with the letter C.

The bus ride was horrific. I wish the BASF could have afforded airfare, but I know every donor dollar is both rare and important. I endured; almost being arrested at the Boise State practice, being locked in the bus bathroom, being forced to “lend” a guy named Leo $20.00 and a prison style wedgie called the “hoodie.”

The bronze beaver also arrived in tact. I had to explain to my fellow prisoners..err passengers that it was a beaver and not a rat. Low bid sculptor I guess.

Anyway need to get ready and head over to Bob’s, the burger joint, not the AD. Few.. close call there. JB

PS: JackBeav thank you for the excellent information on meat that you wrote a couple of days ago. Its obvious that you are serious about your meat and spent lots of time thinking about it. I have a question; Is Jack your name or what you do?

PPS: OSUBABY: Shandra sends her regards. She remembers you as “smoking hot” I hope that is good, not entirely sure what it means.

      • Jack, why are you indulging this Jackass? Frankly, I am not sure that your replies are all that funny. In fact your replies are not as good as his stuff. I actually cringe at your back and forths because he is funnier than you are. Perhaps you should simply ignore him. (I still am not quite sure what that dissertation about meat a few days back was all about.) Also I am not sure the doggy references are all that great either. Perhaps you can ignore him like most of us do and he will go away. Let’s focus on real osu topics like beating BYU tomorrow!

        • beaverbeliver,

JackBeav reminds me of many players I had in Corvallis. They love the Beavs and try hard but, darn it, the talent just isn’t there. There is a place on any team for players like JackBeav, just not on the field.

No one works harder than JackBeav. He is on this site almost all day and sometimes posts twenty times! Once in while they aren’t too bad, actually reflecting some forethought.

I’m very excited to be back in Corvallis for the big apology…lets all hope I’m re-instated no later than 9-1-12! JB

          • Good boy. More bone for you! Come get it my little doggie.

You’re so good at showing up as expected, I wish I could give you more than accolades for being such a good doggie. But it just doesn’t work that way.

Or… since I have total domination over my doggie, I could just admit that he is me, and I am him. But what fun would that be? I didn’t even make him sign off with JB on every post.

            Or did I?

            Enjoy that one doggie!

          • Can I get a judgement here? Total dominaton of a persistent troll within one week has to count for something more than just marginalizing said troll.

I know the parlay has been annoying. But now that he’s stomped into itty-bitty bits, there has to be some relief.

          • Bonehead…..you are smart enough to realize your shtick is blown? The Beavers have now won a game, and it is quite likely we will win another before the end of the season. So the call to get back to the 2-win glory years …. is TAKEN CARE OF. You got nothing now.

          • Sorry you feel that way liver. But I’m not a poser on this site who doesn’t know his own material well enough to get my obsessive, stalking, half-witted droll out there for everyone to see. You don’t think what I put out there is as funny as stalker doggie’s material? You have a creepy sense of right and wrong, let alone humor. Go back and see how many times I’ve insulted multiple people and their families compared to stalker doggie.

If you don’t want to show a little backbone when posers stalk you and spit at you, then stand aside and let someone else take care of it. The whining makes you sound like a Duck fan.

        • It’s pretty harmless stuff and it’s not like there’s much more to say about the game until they actually start playing it tomorrow. JackBeav has been contributing to this site for a long time and has earned the right to indulge any other forum poster he wants to.

Given that, Pettibonehead’s act is the same joke over and over. My guess is that he is a Duck troll with a decent sense of OSU football history. I’ve noticed he is posting the same stuff over on OregonLive.

We get it, Pettibonehead…you think the team is playing as bad as 15 years ago, so Jerry might as well comeback. It was humorous the first couple of times, by the tenth time, not so much. And at least stick to one site, it dilutes your material to be all over the place.

        • He won’t go away. I pwn him. And now I am him. Anything my doggie does on this site will be pathetic and sad. But It will be that way because, almost without effort, I have absolutely dominated a… well… troll would be too masculine for this boy… goat?… infant… oh yeah… I have dominated a little doggie. It’s not anything to write home about. In fact, it’s expected when a little doggie enters your life. Make sure he’s pottie-trained, and let him sniff the pant-legs of your guests.

Does anyone deny that this is the sum value of my doggie thus far?

          • I have no idea what “pwn” means and I am a little disturbed by your post. Are you talking football or something else? Good lord, I hope it is football or my opinion of you has changed greatly!

          • Hi mckalk.. and BN in general:

Stepping out of the Pettibonehead character for a minute. This whole thing was meant in fun. Its the type of smack I’ve been exchanging with my Beaver friends for years, and I do have many Beaver friends.

I too have no idea what “pwn” means, but I am beginning to have concerns that JackBeav can’t handle this type of repartee. Did you notice all the responses between 1 and 2 AM? Domination must be a full-time job.

My new policy will be to never refer to him directly. I’m serious, for once.

          • You’re worth my drunk-thirty attention. You asked for it, and you got it. Your humor has been equalled. Sorry if it doesn’t look as cool in the mirror as it does when you fling it. Try some real wit next time.

          • And note how a night of Snow Cap and Jubel Ale still doesn’t put my grammar at your level… not even half as bad as your attempt to correct someone’s grammar. I admit it’s weird, but it’s not half as weird as your continued obsession with all things Beav.

      • Hey Jer, do you remember when I was at your house with Shanda? You let us take the jeep while you and Barry had a few beers. Man those were the days. Shanda was “smoking hot” back then. Can you post a pic for me of what she looks like today?

  23. I see it a little differently. I think this will be a good game with OSU in a tight one for most of the game and holding on for an important victory and back to back wins. I think the team is improving and I like Mannion doing just enough with other contributions on offense and defense to get the ‘W’.

    OSU 27, BYU 24

    BYU @ Oregon St. Preview:
    http://beaverbyte.com

  24. Been doing a bit more research on BYU. Still think the Beavs win tomorrow. But based on the research I’m a bit more worried about winning the wars in the trenches.

The BYU o-line looks pretty good, and it may be hard to control the BYU running attack (especially with a mobile QB — Riley Nelson — at the helm).

On the other side of the ball, the BYU 3-4 apparently features some very fast linebackers. If those linebackers start speed rushing against Remmers, it could be deja ASU all over again.

Anyway, that’s what I’ll be focusing on tomorrow at Reser. Can OSU stop BYU from running? Can Remmers and his friends protect Mannion in the pocket against BYU’s blitzing linebackers? Here’s hoping that we can win those two particular battles tomorrow. If so, I think we’ll win the war….

    • We hear a lot about the front line for BYU and their size. But if you’ve watched them play, you wouldn’t be mentioning their partial measurables and basing life on the inferred outcome.

The 3-4 defense is perfect against a running offense if refs are willing to call holding penalties which are obvious to the world. If not, then the NG and the two 3 techs need to be all world.

BYU does not suffer from such a condition. their front line is slow, and, in case any one of them is reading this comment, their front line is slow.

      • I have not watched a BYU game this year. Glad to hear the BYU front line is slow. If BYU can’t get pressure on Mannion, and if BYU can’t run the ball down OSU’s throat, then it’s all Beavs this afternoon at Reser.

      • What about BYU’s star linebacker, senior Jordan Pendleton? He’s 6’3″, 240 lbs, mean, and fast. Take a look at this clip of Pendleton speed-rushing and sacking the San Jose State QB: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=7079693

Pendelton is not a secret. OSU certainly knows about him, and should be prepared. But if Pendelton is speed rushing all day against Remmers, the Beavers may need to dedicate a tight end or back to help Remmers in pass protection. Otherwise, Mannion may find himself flat on his back too many times (ala ASU….)

    • I hope Mannion can make them pay for their blitzing. Historically, It never seems like a Beav offense hits that five yard slant in the vacated area for a 40 yard gain. Do they even have that play? I remember the occassional nice screen play that works, but more times than not it’s either panic or that stupid three yard pass in the flat that the CB has plenty of time to get to.

  25. I’m not convinced the Beavers are mature enough to put four quarters together yet, and while BYU hasn’t looked like world beaters, they do make the plays to win down the stretch. So far, Oregon State’s really only had maybe 3 or 4 good quarters all year down the stretch. Let’s face it, without that 2nd quarter explosion and a perfect storm, we’re probably staring at 0-5. Beavers definitely have a chance to win tomorrow. But I just don’t trust this team to execute for four quarters yet.

    BYU 28, Oregon State 27.

    • It’s been quite some time since OSU put together a complete game. Maybe even pre-Quizz. There was a pattern of good first quarters and high scoring there compared to the opponent, but then weakness in the third quarter or late.

Quality wins against USC or Stanford (2008?) usually featured late defensive letdowns with the opponent roaring back and making the game closer than they should have.

I think a true benchmark game for this team would be all three units playing well for four quarters in a victory. that sounds obvious and oversimplified, but I really think the team needs to experience it once, and have it explicitly called out to them.

  26. Dear Angry,

You are a passionate osu fan but your really have a slim to none conept of corvallis sports and oregon state athletics. MIke Riley is a Corvallis High man and won a state title in every sport in a calendar year (Every sport). You want to talk about winners, where did you play? The minute you post where and what sport you played I will stop talking. Bottom line you never played anywhere and have a fan’s grasp at anything sports related. I trust a coach over a fan who never played sports when make football decisions. Thanks God the A.D. feels the same. Good luck with your little web site loser.

        • He’s a Blitz jackass who stalked us for a while, pretending he was me and a couple other posters. He’s why I have the totem beaver as an avatar, to differentiate me from him. Still, it took him a couple days to figure out he couldn’t just sign in and play his fraud anymore. One day he took all the stalking a little far and made some comments that were WAAAAAYYYYYY over the line. Actually, I’ve never had a line drawn for the subject matter he contributed. But you should get the idea.

    • Wow, it never occured to me that if I was not a multi-sport superstar high school athlete I could not have a sports related opinion. Jackson, thank you for that ground breaking insight. I will suggest that Angry close down the site immediately. Have a safe trip back to North Korea.

    • Haha. I guess Al Michaels shouldn’t be doing Monday Night Football, and Vin Scully shouldn’t be covering the Dodgers. Bahahaha.

To answer your question: I played football in the school yard before switching to Madden ’99 as a young buck, and I dominated HS baseball (before deciding to quit for personal reasons). Pretty sure none of that validates or invalidates my insights!

  27. Angry – Hunt at OregonLive:picking BYU because of the age, maturity:

“Prediction: The young Beavers’ defense has improved, freshman Agnew is back, Mannion is maturing, and BYU is playing on the road for the first time since Sept. 10. But the Cougars are a very mature team – heck, 33 of their players are married.

    BYU 28, Oregon State 24.”

  28. Good morning BN: Its me again the old and future coach. Looking fowardr to seeing you all at Parker,,err Reser today.. 1:00. Should be plenty of seating.

I’m spending a nice morning here at BD’s home. We’re watching that ridiculous charade that ESPN is doing from Eugene. Compare that to how nice and quiet it is here in good old Corvallis. The kids can study forestry and engineering without all those nuts running around! When I’m coach next year I will impose a permanent ban on Game Day!

I notice the line is OSU +3. If I were a betting coach I would lay a few on that. With me in the (alleged) stadium the Beavs should easily beat that spread. Too bad I wasn’t here on 9-5.

    Bye for now..JB

    • My little doggie is worried that hit half-witted attempt at humor has been matched, and it doesn’t look as pretty when it’s aimed at him? Poor little doggie.

Do you know how hard it is to match a half-wit? It goes against every grain to not keep a story straight, get simple geographic, personal and historic events, ideas and people completely wrong. And it’s nearly impossible to keep from rising above a barely funny sense of humor without becoming as weird and creepy as my doggie has become at times.

      Can’t take? Don’t dish.

      • And doggie, don’t think for a second that I’m angry or upset with your little obsession. If I was, then last night’s drunk-thirty comments which match your wit to a tee would have been mean-spirited. I think angry can attest to what I can spew when drunk and mean. I went off pretty good on the baseball team after a UCLA game two springs ago. I don’t remember what half of it was about, but I remember it was just nasty.

You barely cross the threshold of being annoying. I find it a real challenge to just ignore your major fails and pretend I’m in your mindset to match your humor half-wit for half-wit. If I was angry with you or any other obsessed stalker, you would know it in a hurry.

  29. While we’re talking about the Ducks’ obsession with the Beavs. I really think they have an inferiority complex. Watching Gameday this morning, I saw the Sac St score on a sign. Duck fan thinks OSU needs to be front and center on their day?

    Nice.

Duck fan does realize that East Coasters are going to see that and think that it’s the opposition’s fans predicting a Duck loss. Doesn’t he?

There also aren’t many people there. That’s too bad. I think there were more Duck fans in the OSU MU quad than there are at UO today. Maybe it has to do with this:
    http://www.registerguard.com/web/sportscolumnists/27018152-41/autzen-fans-game-noise-state.html.csp

  30. Anyone in the L.A. area with Time Warner? I have the Fox College Sports package but I’m not seeing the game on at one. Two of the FCS slots have Washington vs. Colorado so I’m thinking maybe it’ll be on one of those?
