This thread is for discussing the BYU/OSU game.

If you have Comcast, check one of the channels broadcasting the CO/WA game. Right now Comcast is broadcasting that game on two channels, so it leads me to believe that's an error and one of them will show the Beavs' game. We'll see.

  1. So i wonder if the game is even on TV anywhere. It’s not on BNO and people are reporting that FCS is showing only the UW game. Fuck BDC.

  2. First Row Sports is showing the UC-UW game on the dang stream too. I can’t get your link to work Angry. Looks like I have to go to a sports bar.

  3. Notice they’re going right at Reynolds side each time. Teams are going to start going away from Poyer until Reynolds proves himself.

    • Yeah, but he’s good for at least one fumble per game. If he can learn to hang on to the ball he’ll be special, otherwise he’s just mediocre.

  4. Both defenses having trouble stopping the offenses. Beavers need a touchdown on this drive. Can’t waste opportunities to get 6

  5. Wow. That was a really bad decision by Mannion. You can’t make that throw under any circumstance. Wonder if he even saw the linebacker. That’s awful.

  6. Beavers gonna have to play mistake free the rest of the way to try and win this. Mannion cannot make bad decisions, especially when in the red zone

  7. Touchdown Beavers. Nice series for Mannion. Bounced back well from the pick. Beavers needed that touchdown in the worst way.

  8. Beavers are killing themselves with mistakes. Halahuni drops a pass and Romaine misses a FG. This team cannot stop hurting themselves.

  9. That’s what the Beavs needed to win this game. Not saying they will win, but they needed a defensive (or ST) score to tip the balance, and they got it.

  10. Beliver21: You were bang on with this comment: “…No excuse for the Beavers not to have a spy on Nelson. Banker clueless as usual….”

    • He had to be exhausted with how much running he was doing on that return. He was basically running from one sideline to another twice. That’s a lot of running.

  11. Why did Watkins run right into that last defender? Why not run to the right and avoid him?

It reminded me of the Bob Sanders/Ben Roethlisberger play from a few years ago.

  12. Pointless halftime question:

If taking a sack counts against your rushing yards total why don’t yards after an interception count against your passing yards?

  13. Okay seriously why is Robinson in at MLB? I just DVR’d it to make sure I was seeing this correctly Isn’t Unga second in the conference in tackles? Is he hurt or something? Man shit crap pisses me off.

  14. Seriously though, why would Banker not put a spy on a running QB. There can not be a logical reason not to. He’ll keep taking off running and get first downs until Banker finally makes an adjustment.

    • I agree, but who would you use to spy? Usually its a MLB that does that and I’m not sure if our MLB’s (especially with Robinson in right now) are athletic enough to keep up with him anyways.

    • Reynolds and Watkins look lost at times. They’re the ones who give up big plays in the secondary every single game, especially Watkins. That run that was called back he should have stopped before it had a chance to really get going but somehow got shook.

    • Mannion made a bad throw for 1 INT and another was bad luck when he was trying to check it down. I won’t say he’s a turnover machine right now. However, Agnew cannot hold onto the ball. That’s the issue with Riley wanting to give him a bunch of carries. He clearly has issues with ball control.

  15. Agnew and Prince do not touch the ball the rest of the year, and spend the next 300 days learning to HOLD ONTO THE BALL.

And these announcers are insane. Chriton doesn’t like getting blocked? He got blocked in the back after the play was over. What a joke.

  16. Crichton with the bonehead play of the day. That’s a killer penalty. Would have been third and 2 instead they’re at the 15

  17. Beavers don’t cover the guy in the flat at all. The Beavers continue to make mistakes. This drive gotta off to a horrible start thanks to Romaine.

  18. That guy was wide open on the TD. All they’ve done, all game, is run between the tackles, then play action.

I think our defense has stepped up because they’re young and developing, NOT because Banker is any good. His scheme is still getting crushed. At least Langsdorf is opening up his playbook; Banker does nothing.

  19. Our LBs are playing so passively, either because they are spying, or just bad, that when BYU runs up the middle there is nobody to meet them. That is why they get 6 yards per run; our LBs are in no position to stop them.

    • The sad thing is that even James Rodgers was doing it. I was watching after a play with about 7 minutes left and he was just casually trotting back to the huddle.

      • Not really. If the Beavers get a FG at least they still have a shot, small shot but still a shot. A touchdown would have provided more hope. That Remmers penalty really killed the drive. Third and 6 is a lot easier to get than third and 11. Truly amazing how many mistakes they’ve made.

        • I never felt the outcome was in question. I felt the Beavs could steal a (undeserving) win if they held BYU to 27 (i.e. a FG instead of that TD that made it 31) and milked the clock. BYU has Swiss cheesed the Beavs all day so no chance at winning straight up.

  20. Banker deserves an extension for this game. He made the BYU offense look like the Stanford Cardinal. That’s Andrew Luck at QB right?

  21. This was an important game for rest of the season. At 1-5 now Riley deserves plenty of heat. Time to crank it up a couple notches. This is not acceptable. I don’t see why people are so loyal to Riley when he left us before without much consideration. We give him more loyalty then any other program in the nation and times like now make that seem pretty ridiculous. Hate the BDC contract. That was a big fail.

  22. Mannion made a really bad interception in the second quarter but he has been damn good since. He had another pick that was tipped, not his fault. Loved what i have seen from him since the first pick. Some big pass plays

      • Gotta wait till next year and 2013 to see what he can do with a better OL. He is always having to avoid the guy on his blind side after Remmers blows his assignment.

        • I guess whom ever it is playing in the OL can’t be worse than what we have now but I’m still not convinced that the new guys are going to be Pac-12 caliber.

          • Of the first two OL guys who committed this year one of them had NO STARS. At the time I posted a query as to if there was any difference between a walk-on and a kid with no stars. As I recall the other kid was rated a 2 star player. That doesn’t make me very hopeful as to the OL talent Riley is bringing to OSU.

  23. Romaine missed two field goals and had a stupid 15 yard penalty. Definitely a horrible day from him. He killed the Beavers today. The 4 turnovers also killed em as well. You can’t play that badly overall and have a chance.

    • This was a total team loss. It is almost they tried to throw the game. Remmers killed the second try
with his usual drive killing penalty.

  24. They are simply not a very good football team. Ill prepared. Lack a lot of talent in the offensive line. Thin in the defensive line. Poor at linebacker. Mediocre secondary. Shitty kicker. Young inexperienced QB who makes too many bad decisions. Thin at running back where there are too many fumbles. poor play calling. Are there any other bases to cover??

      • Wasn’t Mangino smacking his players around or something at Kansas? I thought he would be a non-hireable. He had a couple of good years at Kansas, but when his star QB graduated the wheels started to come off.

    • I’d give Joe a pass, he coming off an injury in only his second game back and has way more positive plays than negative.

He’s a good player and in comparison to the rest of the Beavs, that guy is a flat out stud.

        • I can’t tell if Mannion is just not using Halahuni and Rodgers like Katz did last year or injuries have taken their toll. Neither looks like the same player to me and that is probably understandable.

          • You can tell Joe isn’t the same. When he catches the ball he doesn’t look good and he goes down so easily. Not seeing him fight for extra yards. Rodgers’ speed isn’t the same. I’m sure they would like to see him run vertical routes but right now the speed I don’t think is there to get behind the secondary. He can run corner routes and slants though. They mostly get him the ball on out breaking routes.

  25. Agnew’s red shirt got burned today. I wonder if he’s in Riley’s dog house so much that he won’t hardly see the field for the rest of the year. Now that would be a real bummer.

          • It’s interesting you never hear anything about how many fumbles these guys have in high school. Maybe they don’t get touched or hit hard enough for it to matter, but then again it is supposedly technique. Some coach (can’t remember his name) worked with Tiki Barber and his fumbles went down dramatically. So it is teachable.

  26. This game was a kick in the nuts. I was starting to drink the Kool-aid that we had turned the corner after last week. Not so much! Stanford is going to kill us.

WSU wins the ugly Uni award. Looks like the need some Oxi Clean.

  27. So is my takeaway that the San Jose St Spartans have a better defense than the Beavs? You know Bronco Mendenhall fired his D-Coordinator mid-season last year after the Cougs were embarassed by Utah St. Any chance our hero was taking note?

  28. The post game interview with Riley is on. That puppy dog that they have asking the questions is a irritating. He always sidesteps the REAL issues by highlighting individual players.
Question: “We got our asses handed to us today but didn’t Wheaton have a great game?”
Riley: “Ah yes, he’s a great kid and always comes through for us.”
Question: “We got our asses handed to us today but didn’t Mannion look fearless as BYU poured through our line?”
Riley: Ah yes, he’s a great kid and always comes through for us.”

  29. I have much more respect for realizing quickly that your coaching can not taske you to the next level than dragging it out over many years. Riley in his 11th or 12th year isn’t doing anything special anytime soon. Instead we can’t even get BDC or Riley to admit there is any issue and that at minimum a coordinator or two should be replaced as a final chance for Riley. Instead we give lifetime deals for 3 points in a Sun Bowl. Arizona axed Stoops not long after actually playing in the Holiday Bowl. They knew he had peaked for atleast a few years or more so pulled the plug. Sometimes that is your only chance to take a step forward. Wish BDC wasn’t such a lame duck AD.

  30. I think we have to cut some slack to the young team. I agree with firing a coordinator or two, but this is going to be a good football team in a couple years regardless of the coaching. I really believe that. Young guys make mistakes, it is what happens. Look at the Washington teams, you need to have a bad year or two to get back on track.

    • Washington really still isn’t all that good. Great offense, pathetic defense. It’s likely to always be like that under Sarkisian. The Beavers with their talent now and the future could be a Rose Bowl bound team but the coaching staff will hold them back. How much can you really achieve with this coaching staff? If they fire Banker and the DB coach and bring in some defensive guys that actually know what they’re doing, the Beavers could have quite the future. However, do we really believe that will happen? I just don’t know if it will happen. I’ve been wanting Banker gone for years.

  31. Wow. The Beavers are so sad that they cancelled the post game show on 860am after Riley’s interview. No fan calls. Guess they knew it would only depress people more. I wouldn’t be surprised if BDC placed a call. He knows the heat only builds when frustrated fans call in talking about a poor coached and executed game. BDC can’t even get us on ROOT. There was a stretch where we were on TV like 18 straight games not that long ago and now we can’t get anything more than FCS which many don’t get or that requires a special paid sports package. Pretty pathetic. I was looking forward to hearing what fans thought of the poor showing that was full of dumb mistakes.

  32. There are fan calls. My bad. They were doing this auto thing for over a few minutes. It sounded likey they cut out and had started the auto show. I give Riley a D- so far for the year and BDC a F.

  33. How many F…ups does Remmer get before they sit his ass on the bench? It’s all about next year now. Did Unga and Wilson both get hurt?

    • Yes both injured. Apparently the coaching staff believes that there’s nobody to take Remmers place if they bench him. Good job of recruiting Mr. Riley. sarc

      • Did Remmers poor play come up in the post-game stuff? I was listening to the Stanford/WSU game on the radio instead of wasting time on Beaver post game. Wazzu was actually giving them a battle through the first half.

        • I didn’t hear all of the post game show but while I was listening (during listener call-in) there was some talk about replacing Riley and what was interesting was Jim Wilson and the other talking head didn’t poo poo the idea.

Wilson pointed out that in the college game not only does a coach have to coach but he also has to recruit. I almost fell out of my chair.

  34. So tell me why Mannion is better than Katz? I really don’t see Mannion progressing. In fact, I’d say he took a step back today. What are these check down throws to the RBs where there are what feels like 5 guys already on him? I guess I’m not so much ‘down’ on Mannion, it’s just that I don’t see the upside or progress in his game.

    • Open up your eyes then. He took A LOT of shots downfield. Mannion is better than Katz. He played well today. He had the one bad pass for a pick that really hurt in the second quarter, 2nd one was a fluke pick. He played well after the 1st pick and really made some great throws down the field. He also did a nice job of avoiding sacks and getting it to his running backs for decent gains. Some Beaver fans talk about how he locks onto his first target but that doesn’t happen much. Those fans are just trying to convince themselves Katz is better when he’s not. Mannion is really improving.

      • We are 1-5 and at some point, you have to look to whose leading this team at QB. I get he’s young and it’s a team sport, but he misfired on a lot of plays not only in this game but others as well. I guess we just have to chalk it up to inexperience but with the talent at wide receiver, I feel he should be further along to the point of actually winning winnable games, i.e. UCLA and BYU. Yes, the defense should get some of the blame but had Mannion led them to more first downs, the defense would not have been on the field as much.

          • We lost this game in the trenches! Mannion played well with what he had to work with…. our OL. Mannion if he doesn’t get hurt for lack of OL will be a Pac-12 star. BYU controlled the ball = BYU wins.

  35. OSU can still win a few games. But it is time to face the facts. They neither have the coaching acumen nor the athletic talent to compete with the best teams in college football. They are a turnover machine that doesn’t value ball security and their opponents are generally bigger, faster, more aggressive and more creative. The schemes are simplistic and/or anachronistic and the physical conditioning average. Let’s hope that they can learn to change.

      • Yep! More BYU fans in attendance today, than there were _uck fans from last year’s Civil War game. There are a lot of Mormons in Oregon!

        • I was going to ask about that. It was absolutely embarassing that you could hear the BYU fans so clearly on TV when their defense was trying to make a stop. The Fox announcers even took notice. Talk about adding insult to injury.

    • Randy the Logger got fired at the end of the Sac. State game because there were too many complaints about him fans. Marketing decided to give him a pink slip immediately.

      Angry,

Do the Beavers have any quality tight ends coming up? I remember when OSU had Joe Newton, Tim Euhus, Marty Maurer, and Joe Kuykendall and the TE position was a solid weapon. Now, we get to look forward to not only a shitty o-line, but the wonderful talents of Colby Prince, who can’t block, can’t catch, isn’t cordinated, and has no business even being out on the field. Just look at his production over the course of the year. Hamlett looks too slow, and Perry, I have no opinion of either way. I guess I’m pissed because of the way the season has gone, but Prince has been in the program for 3 years now and should be showing progress. Please tell me help is on the way!!

      • What? Was he really fired or is that a joke?

Perry is a pretty good TE, and the two guys they signed this period are good. They won’t be ready for a couple years, though. I guess part of the answer depends on what you think about guys like Klute and Hamlett. I’m not a big fan of either at this point.

        • Randy the Logger was fired, no joke. Talked with someone close to the situation and they told me fans were upset and offended by him. Guess there are people in Beaver Nation that don’t appreciate being labeled as rednecks. For me, it never caught on because we are the “beavers,” and I can see where people that aren’t really connected to OSU would be confused when we have a guy wielding a chainsaw at the games, plus it’s a little freaky to watch.

As for the tight end issue, I think Klute is a project and Hamlett may be a wild card that will either pan out or not. As for Prince, he might be a good guy and all, but I was not happy when they signed him because he came from a weak league and did not feel he was major D-1 material. Think he went to South Albany (?). Nice guys aren’t going to cut it in the Pac-12. Hopefully, Dustin Stanton will stay with his commit and sign in February. I really like what I see in him.

  36. Mannion is better than Katz, and has the potential to be great by season’s end. He’s not the problem, but right now he isn’t putting the team on his shoulders and winning games, so he’s not the solution, either.

    • Well, it is a lot to ask of a RS Freshman who wasn’t officially named the starter until the week of the UCLA game. Give him another year or two and he may be able to do that, just not yet with his youth.

    • As a rs freshman QB, Mannion is still making some bad decisions and some bad throws, but he’s getting better each game. Agreed that Mannion is better than Katz today. Also agreed that Mannion has the potential to be great (although that may not happen until next season).

As for yesterday’s game, it was lost in the trenches, not at QB. We gave up almost 300 yards on the ground to a BYU team that has a mediocre rushing attack. On the other side of the ball, we rushed for a net of 59 yards. Even with Andrew Luck at QB, the beating we took in the trenches would probably have doomed the Beavs to another loss.

When a team is beaten so badly at the line of scrimmage — as the Beavs were by BYU (and by UCLA, and by others), that team needs to play an almost perfect game in all other respects to win. That is too much to ask from most teams (and way too much to ask from this year’s Beaver team).

  37. The coaching staff is the problem. They are slow to change personnel, never make adjustments, force their schemes rather than take what the defense gives, no attention to detail, etc.

    • After watching the great defensive adjustments the Ducks made in the second half against ASU tonight, I was trying to think of a game where Banker made noticeable adjustments in the last three years and the Beavers dominated a game going away. I’m drawing a blank.

    • Agreed. I’m cautiously optimistic that this season’s fiasco will force change, and that either Banker or Langsdorf will be replaced (ideally, both).

OSU needs to get some top, young coaching talent to take over the OC and DC positions. This should be doable. OSU has money (from the new PAC-12 TV deal) to lure a couple of hotshot young coaches. OSU has talented, young players in the pipeline. Mike Riley is perceived as a good guy to work for (and a guy who runs a clean football program). OSU plays in one of the nation’s best football conferences, and gets plenty of exposure as a PAC-12 team (and as the in-state rival of the Ducks — perhaps the country’s most over-exposed team).

BDC and Mike Riley need to focus on this asap. I’m almost to the point of wanting the Beavers to lose the rest of their games this year, to force this sort of change…..

  38. Mark Banker and Danny Langsdorf must be replaced!
    But……
The only way coaching changes will be made next season, is whenever fans don’t renew their season tickets. After this season is over, my family and I will not be renewing our season tickets for Beaver football. I can save more money by staying at home and watching them on TV. That is if they are even worth watching, otherwise I’ll just check the box score and recap after the games online.

  39. It looks to me that the coaches can not decide who is going to play, thus much confusion with little room for passion and execution. I have not seen enthusiasm in this program since the first Rose Bowl loss to the Ducks….and it is getting worse. UO wins tonight with a redshirt freshman qb and a true freshman running back…but were young and not supposed to be able to win games. Where have our standards and expectations gone….south I think. I am very disheartened about the state of Beaver football and I don’t buy this will be a very good team in 2-3 years. WSU is in that 3rd year and they are better than us….and that is about it. Cancel the Wisconsin and BYU games next year and get UNLV and New Mexico on the schedule, along with Nichols State, we would have a real shot at 3 wins. As it stands we are already 1-2 in preseason next year….and you really can’t count Nichols State a win (wasn’t Sac St supposed to be an automatic?).

    • You, Doug, are an idiot. This team will be much better next year regardless of the coaching. We are playing many more freshmen(redshirt or true) then the Ducks. The ducks are rebuilding on defense a bit, but their offense is almost completely intact. Yes, we are rebuilding, but I think the future is bright. Assuming we get rid of Banker and Langsdorf…

      • So why the personal attack? Aren’t people allowed to have differing opinions? If you want to hang out on a message board where only positive vibes are allowed take a hike over to pure orange http://www.pure-orange.net/ and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

P.S. How can you be so sure that OSU is going to be improved BEFORE the underclass linemen have even played? Folks are saying these kinds going to be much better than the kids who are currently starting but I have to ask myself what the heck they’re basing that on. Seems to me like it’s mostly hope.

Puff out your chest and start strutting around AFTER the team starts doing some upsets.

          • Fair enough. Are you speaking of linemen or the team in general?

So far this year’s crop of OL (not counting Isaac Seumalo), according to the Blitz, database have the following rating and offers:

            Gavin Andrews: 3 star? (when I search on him in the Blitz data base nothing comes up) Offers from: OSU;

            Chase Eldredge: 2 star offers from OSU;

Josh Mitchell: 3 star offers from: OSU; Montana; Washington State; Wyoming

            DE: No commitments

            DT: No commitments

          • Andrews has offers from CO, AZ, Boise State, Utah, and WSU among others.

Last year’s class had some good recruits.

You need to understand we have…six or so walk-ons right now, so a guy with any offers is likely better than what we currently have. Plus, just looking at the film on many of these guys, they are better players. 2007 was the worst recruiting class ever, and the staff stuck with the walk-on OLmen when it was obvious in ’08 they weren’t good and Quizz/James were carrying the team in spite of them.

          • It’s an interest topic, but it’s also reality. Some people want to point to the wash-outs who retired or transferred out. But even they were not that good… except for Lyons, who actually had a freak accident. Without ever having seen tape on our two frosh walk-on linemen for this year, I will say with 70% certainty that they are better linemen than the three seniors on our line. It doesn’t help that half the time I was watching the Beav offense, I could see a lineman with a number ending in zero wandering around doing nothing more than I was doing while I was just watching them.

Mitchell and Eldredge are projects like Andrews was. They are hard-nosed, tough and technically excellent. But they don’t have any size. They will have size.

Gavin Andrews is an elite prospect with agility, strength off the charts and awesome hands. He’s a mauler with size an speed. Couple him with Seumalo, and we’re looking at one side of an offensive line that rivals pairs like Zimmerman and McDaniel, Shields and Spears or Jones and Hutchinson. And I won’t back down (much) from what seems like hyperbole.

Sadly, I think these kids would likely start on this year’s edition of Beavs football.

  40. Ironic that Jerry Pettibone returns, and OSU now plays like the Jerry Pettibone teams.

Only, Jerry Pettibone surrounded himself with pretty good coordinators for assistant coaches!

*PS: does anyone know who’s blue helicopter that was parked on the Prothro practice fields during the BYU game?

    • I’d say, one of Pettibone’s staffers just beat the shit out of the Beavers about 10 hours ago. And like I said before, I think almost all of Pettibone’s teams played tougher on defense than any of Bankers last three or four editions.

  41. I guess it’s a good thing I emotionally detached myself from the football team and their results.

    Three things are apparent.
    1. Some BYU players are juiced.
    2. Ryan Katz should play MLB… and could play it better than whoever was in there.
    3. Remmers saves his best for quality moments. If we need inches, Mike will make it more. If we look like we’re going to score… and on and on and on….

  42. Does Oregon own ESPN?

The duck is their official mascot. They are in 95% of all ESPN college football commercials. The ESPN reporter’s get a friggin hard on everytime they talk about anything having to do with Oregon!

    Unbelievable.

But there has to be some kind of connection there. ABC and ESPN are the same. Disney either has a lot of stock in ABC, or they own ABC. Does NIKE also have stock in either one?

Is Uncle Phil Knight the George Soros of the Sports Media?

  43. Any one else catch that replay call in the duck game when their qb fumbled and asu recovered, but the ace Stricherz crew’s ridiculous on field call was upheld? I turned it off after that. Even Brent & Herbie were scratching their heads.

    • I can’t believe Stricherz still has a job, but Duck fans are probably worshipping him this morning. For some reason, he believes officials should have a huge role in deciding games instead of the players.

      • Stricherz was standing in the middle of the field wearing a headset. He didn’t even look at a reply, so that was on all the officials upstairs. I think they let the play stand b/c the sideline official blew the whistle and killed the play.

  44. You can compare OU and OSU and see difference in speed, trenches, depth, etc. etc with all factors going to OU (hate it, but it is true). But the biggest factor is coaching.

I watched Chip, who we know is a win at all cost even if it costs $25000.00, coach like he was in a roid rage. He yelled at students after the game during his interview to shut up and scared the crap out of them. Riley is never that intense. Yet I like how Riley acts with his players at times (cooks celebration after big TD pass).

Bottom line…. coaching. Coaching effects recruiting, technique, play calling, etc. etc. Talents are needed but can only take you so far. Optimum talent comes from good recruiting and coaching good technique and providing a good game plan.

    • Sorry BeaverBill,

      I wasn’t trying to be nit-picky ^

You make excellent points and I agree with you 100%

OSU’s scheme isn’t effective bothe offensively and defensively. They must make changes with their schemes to make improvements. Then recruit players to fit that scheme! Look at all of the great teams ( yes, even oregon) and they all recruit to fit their schemes. Oregon mostly recruits speed. Erickson did that when he coached at OSU.

Both BYU and Boise State beat us with players from Oregon that OSU didn’t even offer scholarships too, or they lost the recruiting battles with in-state players. There is no excuse for this!

      • Don’t think scheme is the problem. The team can run a pro style offense and be just fine. It’s in the trenches where the Beavers stink. Undersized DT’s or DT’s who are bad causes them to be dominated up front. Running back’s will have huge holes to run through and get into the second level consistently. On the offensive line there just isn’t much talent aside from Josh Andrews. They get no push and just can’t block at all. That causes there to be no run game. You aren’t gonna win many games when you cannot run the ball at all. They also have issues pass blocking, Remmers especially.

When you can’t run and can’t stop the run you have no chance to win. Notice the 1 game they’ve won they stopped the run and ran it effectively. It was just Arizona but still.

So yes, coaching is in an issue, I just think recruiting has been a bigger issue than in-game coaching. In-game coaching is bad but you need the talent to win games. Give Oregon the Beavers O-Line and their offense would have issues no matter how good of a coach Chip Kelly.

Boise State and BYU beat the Beavers because they’re MUCH better in the trenches. Once that issue is fully addressed with recruiting the Beavers will be much better.

        • I guess, I should try to be more specific about OSU needing a new scheme. When I said scheme I also mean Offensive and Defensive philosophies. You brought up Boise State, and I’m glad you did! Look at Boise State, they have never had a higher ranked recruiting class than OSU, yet they look very talented! Boise State does run a pro style offense, and but they have a different philosophy than OSU. Boise State can and will put up over 40 points per game, OSU would struggle putting up over 40 points against an invisible defense. Boise State is very versatile, adapts and mixes things up well, yet they can line up in a Power-I formation and get physical. OSU needs to take more risks, adapt to changes either with opponents, or with their personnel (example: if you have a lot of TE’s run more double TE formations, or if you have a mobile QB, more zone reads, roll-outs & bootlegs, etc…) Good teams, like Boise State do this, OSU does not.

          • I would agree. Oregon State is pretty vanilla with how they run the offense. Philosophies are an issue. We all know Banker’s issues. The pro style offense is something I like, personally. It is tough to defend. It won’t be as explosive as a spread offense is at times but I don’t think it necessarily has to be. But you spoke on Boise State and I would agree with what you say about them. They mix things up well and have so many different formations that create big mismatches. That’s something you don’t see with the Beavers. They play with extreme physicality and toughness on both sides of the ball and are mentally tough. That’s the difference right now between the Beavers and the Broncos. They also have excellent talent evaluators on their coaching staff. They get players from Europe and Canada who come in and give them a lot.

If the Beavers can get Salt and some other JC guys that have visited they can begin to get guys who can make impacts next season and provide some physicality on both sides of the ball. It is also on the coaches to make sure they play with toughness. Riley has made the offense too finesse. I know the talent at OL sucks this season, but they don’t run really any power sets. Sometimes, you just need to be able to to knock guys off the ball and run a power play right up the middle for a yard on 3rd and 1. The OL talent will be much better next year(Can only improve, really), I would like to see power sets implemented. I would also like to see them really mix up the formations. Add some no huddle at time. I wouldn’t mind seeing some 5 WR sets here and there on no huddles. That would definitely help the Beavers and tire out the defense. Think about once you tire them down and then go with the power run game in the second half. It will result in huge gains in the run game. I think with an improved OL that would work.

But again, philosophy is a lot. If the coaching staff preaches toughness and being physical the team will become tough and physical. You can run a pro set and still be very physical. Riley CLEARLY doesn’t constantly preach toughness and physicality. The team far too often lacks energy and plays soft. It will probably take Riley forever to start preaching physicality and toughness, sadly. The team will be bigger and more talented on both sides of the line next year, but will they be a real physical bunch? I doubt it. The head coach has to make sure they are and there is no indication Riley will do that. They’ll be better on both lines solely because the talent level will be better but they won’t play with the kind of toughness that separates the really good from them, unfortunately. Boise always plays with toughness. Everyone knows when they play Boise that they will be beat up constantly. But when teams play the Beavers they know that they will be more physical and play with more toughness. Other teams view the Beavers as soft and know they’ll dominate the trenches. That needs to change.

        • And yes I do agree with you about talent being an issue. OSU also doesn’t have the speed that they had in the past. But we are getting killed in the trenches! Didn’t the offensive line have three walk-on’s who now earned scholarships? Not only are they small, but they are slow, and small.

  45. One more thing and I’m done with this BYU game.

DT Castro Masaniai (fractured fibula), DE Taylor Henry (shoulder), LB Kevin Unga (calf strain), LB Cameron Collins (groin), LB Shaydon Akuna (concussion) and LB Tony Wilson (hip contusion) missed significant time. S Anthony Watkins (abdominal) played only in the nickle.

Was it worth playing out of conference in the middle of conference play with a team that does not have a conference to worry about. BYU is Samoa mainland… people will get hurt.

  46. Hi BN: Its me the old and future coach. It was great to be back at Parker..err Reser. Same results but no blame!

Regarding the game.. I think.., Well there is…Sometimes… There is so much easy material I’ll take a pass until later in the week.

I did notice on the way out that the cool inflatable helmet needs a little more PSI. Can’t help but see the metaphor.

Talk to you later in the week. JB

PS: Due to popular demand my no-comment policy on JackBeav is rescinded. He is officially “a tool”. Spotting steroid use from the cheap seats…. priceless!

    • My doggie has always taken a pass on any good material anyway. So what’s the difference?

I knew he couldn’t stay away. He’s the most predictable obsessed stalker we’ve had thus far. I love my little bonehead doggie.

      • I also think it’s funny that my doggie gives a +1 to himself after he posts a comment. That’s so cute. I’ve never ever hit a + or – on this or any other site. But his need for positive attention makes me want to just give him a +.

        +1 little doggie… +1.

        • Jack. You are not funny. At least the annoying guy who seems to bother you has some form of material. Calling him a doggy is silly, stupid and old. Unfortunatly, like our football program, you seem tired.

          • I never said I WAS funny. I just said that I’m as funny as the obsessed stalker. His schtick was Ok the first couple times. But he is woefully poor at straying from the original content. And when he strays, he chooses to insult people who really have no business being insulted. And yet, his obsession keeps him coming back for more.

I give him only what’s due. If it was clever or original, I would be the same. But it’s just pathetic and sad, so I match his wit. He’s a dog without teeth at this point. It would be unfair to actually bite back.

  47. Well, that game was a version of my statement that this OSU team is a string of dufus plays, waiting to happen. We are making a lot of critical mistakes. I put this on the coaching. Another winnable game, gone. Nice work, Riley.

  48. Notice that even though Benny got a Gameday commercial they used his head in a decapitated state. The original script called for Corso walking out the Corso having a big smile on his face. They shot those scenes as well and it atleast gave us more credit with Corso smiling.

Instead they cut those scenes out and the end scene is Corso’s back turned to the camera and saying thank you after a half second glimpse of the Beaver head. I personally put in 19,000 of the nearly 44,000 votes we won with by voting for around 20 hours. Someone else also wrote a script to vote. All that effort was wasted in a poor commercial that did very little to say anythiong good about OSU.

The difference is night and day between that and when Corso walks around with the duck head for 5 or 6 seconds in Ducks Gameday commercials and for 10-12 seconds every time Gameday is in Eugene. If BDC had any nads he would have insisted for atleast 3 seconds of Beaver head exposure, preferably with Corso wearing the head instead of holding it for the final scene. Instead we didn’t get a final scene just a half second blip and a back turned thanks.

BDC is actually doing a worse job than Riley this year. And Riley is doing horrible. I am 100% confident we could eliminate the AD position entirely and instead use a system for Steve Fenk polls the fans on every issue from a website. The fans then get 80% weight of the final decsion and the respective coach can have the final 20% say. We would end up with a much better and interesting product instead of the lame, stale, rinse and repeat garbage we are being force fed like geese before slaughter.

  49. Wow! Cleveland scores a TD with 1:10 left in the game to put them within 7, and they line up to kick the onside kick. Josh Cribbs dives for it at 9 yards and whiffs, but it bounces up and to the side where James Dockery comes down with it.

  50. Here is a sad assessment: The best we can do now is 3 wins. We will not win any of our remaining home games. I can’t wait for this nightmare to end. We only stand a shot at WSU and Cal. We might handle Utah if the game is at home, but on the road this one is will go to the Utes. We will get slaughtered by Stan, Wash, and Oregon. We are totally out of our element particularly against mobile quarterbacks. The OCs at Oregon and Washington will be drooling when they look at game film of BYU gashing us with their QB. This is sad and unfortunately beating Cal and WSU seems to be a stretch in my mind. I think this program is in real turmoil and something needs to change especially as we finish the season with only 2-3 wins.

    • If we finish with only 2 or 3 wins this season, that should finally force at least some of the change that so desperately needs to happen. Would you really prefer another 5 win season followed by the return of Banker, Langsdorf, and friends to do it all over again?

      • I think it will be a miracle if we get even one more win. Other teams are going to be licking their chops at the thought of playing us. We are a disaster waiting to happen.

The business of the program being a BIG FAMILY is going to make it tough to get rid of those who clearly need to go. Riley cant be fired (realistically speaking) and Langsdorf and Banker are part of the family. This really SUCKS!.

  51. I’m excited to be able to see my first Beav game in person next weekend up here in Seattle. I really miss the tailgating with friends and this Saturday should help to fill that void. The Cougs are probably incramentally better than the Beavs, but we’ll see what happens. I just hope for a competitive game at this point. Sad that I have to dumb down my expectations of this team.

  52. Post-Week 7 Pac-12 Power Rankings:
For those of you who are wondering, the best way I can describe this indicator is this is how the teams would stack up vs each other in terms of who would be favored on a neutral field at this point.

    STAN 148.42
    ORE 145.79
    AZST 136.54
    UTAH 129.81
    WASH 129.43
    USC 128.95
    WAST 122.00
    ARIZ 121.80
    ORST 119.92
    UCLA 119.78
    CAL 118.93
    COL 115.67

Out of Conference Oregon State FBS Opponents Current Status:
    WISC 143.11
    BYU 123.60

    Top Ten Overall Rankings:
    ALAB 150.98
    OKLA 150.23
    LSU 148.48
    STAN 148.42
    BOST 146.01
    ORE 145.79
    OKST 143.79
    WISC 143.11
    NDME 137.03
    TXAM 136.67

      • It bases its ratings strictly on overall performance. It takes into account, who you’ve played, and where you’ve played them. UCLA DID pass Oregon State in the rankings after that game, but since then UCLA has dropped more than Oregon State.

  53. Just watched the game on tivo and saw that kicker Romaine had written on either arm “RIP” “FAA”. Wondering if he experienced a loss?
We can’t forget the human element. The best players can block out off field distractions but these kids have all kinds of things going on in their lives, especially these true freshman.
    Just an observation.
