Keys to a Beav upset (ha ha):
- Ball control offense
- Converting every 3rd down
- TDs over FGs
- Attempt and convert 4th and shorts when in borderline punt scenarios
- +3 TO margin
- Slowing the Ducks on 1st and 2nd down/forcing long conversions (imperative to keep the D fresh)
- Monster games from Wynn and Crichton
- Good game plan from Banker (would like to see the Wide9 combined with 8 in the box)…force Thomas to win the game via the air.
That's how you get a monumental upset. Good luck doing all that, Beavs…if you do, you will win.
Go Beavs…?
Go Beavs!
You missed one key factor, win the second half. Especially, the third quarter, if you can do that then you might have a chance of an upset. I like our chances, I think if the game at halftime is the cucks up by 7 or 10 that might be a good thing as they might become complacent. Big IF, I think Mannion needs to have an almost perfect day and accurate. There’s nothing to lose…
GO BEAVERS!
IF Banker is smart enough to stack the box, I think that would be the best strategy to stop the run and to top it off it just so happens Darren Thomas is really sucking this year and he is thankfully not as mobile (scrambling) as last year either. So if we can contain the run I think our pass defense has a good chance and denying them quite often.
I think the monster games from Wynn and Crichton is the biggest key (and most realistic to actually happen). If they come out fired up (which they will) and can wreak havoc in Oregon’s backfield it will mess up the timing of Oregon’s misdirection option plays. Doing this early may allow Mannion to get in a groove on a offense and help the Beavers to make this a game. Let’s go Beavs!
If they somehow can run for 125-150 yards (without turnovers), they might keep it close. Angry is right the Beavs would have to decisively win the turnover battle and score TD’s. Not a very likely scenario.
Wow, the Beavers keep shooting 3’s… looking like a repeat of last game, no inside penetration.
That and free throws, common theme.
Starks needs to shoot less, and more assists.
Good game plan, but I also suggest kick-offs out of the end zone, and safe punts (determined by field position obviously). I think more than field position, those steps are necessary just for momentum, motivation, crowd de-involvement.
I think Wynn and Chricton will give the kind of effort Swancutt did at LSU – leave it all on the field, be relentless and unblockable. I don’t think they’ll be enough, but I sure hope they keep up the effort for four quarters.
By the way, what’s the longest run from scrimmage from an OSU running back this season? Not a receiver on a fly sweep or reverse, a running back from the RB position. How many longer than 20 yards?
I’m guessing we’re going to see at least 7 runs of 20 yards or more by the Ducks today.
Realistically what defense can we expect today? An improvised version of last years or the same?
Like formation.
I like the Wide9 to take away the edge, then 8 in the box to clog the middle and makeup for the lack of DT beef. Let Thomas win the game via the air.

Nice Ward.
Ward with the SWEET personal foul on the first play of the game. Get it together, moron.
Wow and it’s already going to be a shitty game. This sucks.
FIRE MIKE RILEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
pull out your wallet
And Mannion with the bad pass INT. Awesome.
Showing his Derek Anderson side.
Game over.
Already lost the TO battle (couldn’t afford one).
Base 4-3. Holy shit. I may not last through the first quarter.
I believe down hill from here on out. This could get really ugly fast.
Was there any discussion with the team about keeping their composure. What is Ward’s mind would make him think that was ok to do????
I have no idea. Ward isn’t a good player. Some people insist he is because he put up impressive State rushing records…he hasn’t done anything or shown anything…he runs into linemen, fumbles, etc, now we can add “commits bonehead penalties” to the list. Does he do anything well? Nope.
WOW, Lamichael is met at the line by 2 Beavers, and bulls his way into the endzone. Fucking pathetic-ass linebackers.
Might as well line up Wynn and Crichton at LB, because these fucking scrubs don’t do anything.
Riley is HORRIBLE!!!!!!! Could not beat a powderpuff team. The loser needs to go! NOW!!!
Poyer might said a record for return yards this game. And that isn’t a good thing.
Hekker!! whoop! lol. this is just funny now
Hahahah remember those people telling me to lay off Hekker?? Hahahhahah
Bad News Beavers moment right there.
Is UO wearing the ugly drab green so they blend in and are harder to see?
Incredible first possession….PF and then interception… Now Hekker SHANKS one….lol. Hey, its a Riley coached team.
OMG! What is it with Hecker?! How does he manage to shank one like that at the worse possible times?!
I’m watching one more series each, and if we don’t show any life, I’m done. This is just sad.
I need to watch just to see how unprepared the team is…
It is pathetic, but why would any of us expect anything different? The Beavers have done one thing very consistently well this season. They’ve sucked. Holding true to form, the Beavers are trying to achieve a whole new level of suckdom at the end of the season. I’d like to be excited for next year, but I’m not really sure why. How will 9 months and some time in the weight room improve this team? Don’t give me the “one more year of experience” bit. Like I said, they’ll have 9 months to think about it, practice, get some time in the weightroom, and then the same players will be back with the same coaching staff to see if they can suck worse than the year before. I see little in the way of positives on this team.
Proud of the Beavers. They came out ready to play
We all knew the real Hecker would make an appearance before the season was over.
Looks like MR and boys really have the kids ready to play…personal foul, interception (leads the nation in this catagory) and bigtime Hekker for a few yards on the punt. All in 2 and a half minutes. Will be heading to the golf course shortly, this is beyond embarrassing. MR said this week that the AD has not put any pressure on him to change coaching personnel. This is as bad as the first two games (3 months later). At least the basketball team did what they were supposed to do today (win).
Lets hope Chip Kelly has some sympathy on our pathetic situation!
Faking an injury. The ducks are shameless
I hate just about our whole team right now. Except Crichton.
Our whole team is pathetic. I don’t think we’ve bottomed out yet to be honest. I can really see Riley achieving a whole new level of pathetic in 2012 with the same players he’s coaching this year. Haven’t seen much development from the young guys to say they’ll be “lights out” in game one next season.
Has Mannion looked this bad yet?
Kiko must have put the bottle down this week. He actually saw the ball coming clearly
That duck was standing in the way that entire time, and he threw it anyway. God Mannion, what the hell is wrong with you.
GET THE HELL OUT OF CORVALLIS RILEY!!!! YOU ARE A LOSER AND A CHUMP!!!
At this point I really don’t care about this game. Beavers have had a horrible start but I can’t even get upset about it.
Same, considering I’m expecting 54-10 this is actually a good start lol
So predictable on offense, sets and plays.
D on the field waaaay too much. It’s going to be a long second half.
Nice looking run for Ward there.
At least Langsdorf is calling some different plays. Staving off the guillotine for now.
UO is dropping 7 guys back at all times, and Mannion has no CLUE what to do. It’s getting embarrassing.
Allioti is looking a little puffy these days…
Nice frickin block by the right tackle.
UO brings 4 again, and the right side of our line blocks nobody. Wow.
This game simply reaffirms my decision to take a pause on my annual donations this year….
All $5? If you want change it will take a significant buy out.
Mannion is playing badly, but he’s in an impossible spot. No running game…Ducks can manhandle the Beavs’ run game with 4 defensive linemen. So, everyone else can drop back and play the pass.
Fair enough.
That’s what I’d do…
Option toss is murdering us. Nice linebackers.
Beavs have to defend DeAnthony Thomas another 3 years…that should be fun.
Kellen Moore was a freshman at one time, too. But I don’t remember him ever making as many bad decisions in a whole year as Mannion has the last few games.
Kellen Moore had a much better coaching staff, offensive line and run game.
Kellen Moore played against horrible competition.
To be fair angry, Moore showed up CONSISTENTLY every single game, including the big ones. You can discount the competition, but you can’t say he wasn’t good simply because he did what he was supposed to do. I honestly think that his coaching staff did a much better job taking advantage of the skill sets of it’s team and putting their players in a position to be successful.
Moore is great…I don’t remember who he played freshman year, but I doubt any team as good as 2011’s Oregon squad, so my point is he had a lot of time versus bad opponents to build up both experience and confidence. He’s great. Mannion might make a better pro, though.
HEY, a 3-4!!!
If Oregon can keep getting away with holding on the edges, why would they ever decide to go away from it?
Wynn’s body slam was nice! Dude has some strength
Well, everyone BUT our linebackers came to play today.
I want to see more of that 3-4 with Wynn/Crichton playing OLB.
Have they done a 3-4 this year?
Common Langsdorf earn your damn paycheck. The defense is giving us a chance now the offense needs to move the ball somehow.
They only rushed 3 that time. They are REALLY making Mannion win the game.
Is Wheaton even playing? I figured with James out I would hear his name all day.
Yes. He just had a fly sweep. Oregon likely is taking him away.
I’m tired of the “freshmen excuse”…..after 11 games it doesn’t count.
YES! YES! YES! Someone tell me how calling these guys sophomores next season will suddenly make them better?
very unusual screen play, but it didn’t work as usual. Is there a worse screen team than OSU in this country??
That was not unusual at all. Dozens of teams run the same screen but because there was zero blocking at all it looked odd.
It was so poorly executed that Cooks ran backwards to try to find something.
You know they are getting five yards a pop running inside, make the Ducks stop that. Mannion is confused by the looks.
I am pretty sure Riley has a vagina…
Making a statement about somebody on a message board is pretty vaginal.
Oregons play calling has been horrible. Are they try to challenge themselves?
They don’t look as fast. Has to be a let down. This is the first game in two years with no “natty” importance
they are trying to see if they can win by using plays randomly picked out of a hat.
Touchdown Beavers!!!!!!
YES!!!
Holy shit, we finally found a man short and he broke it huge.
UO is dropping so many back, that play HAD to be open. Good playcall.
Why can’t this Langsdorf call plays every game?
That pitch is still killing us.
D is going to be worn out soon. Too bad, they’ve played well so far. The turnovers have kept them on the field too much. If the Beavs had any depth they’d have a shot in the 2nd half.
Interior D has been solid. Exterior D has been horrible.
I told y’all the game would be close in the first half.
It’s long from over. ;)
I consider being within two touchdowns with this Beavers team is close lol
But it’ll likely be28-7 at the half lol
TE is never covered on that play. Wide open TD.
Flat footed and undisciplined…..kind of sums up the season.
It looks like they’re bumping Wheaton a lot, and he can’t get off the line. Pro.
Wheaton has not really gotten the separation I would have anticipated all season long.
Third and 9, and Mannion throws the ball 0 yards downfield. Genius.
Nice play, Canfield. Try throwing the ball downfield next time, moron.
Overreaction.
You need 9 yards, you throw 0. How is that an overreaction? Checkdown was Canfield’s middle name.
It’s an overreaction cause he had no open receivers. Would you be fine if he threw into double coverage deep down the field? Or would him throwing an interception not be cool then? Throwing downfield is fine, if the receivers are open. He isn’t getting open receivers at all besides his safety valves.
Nice hit by Welch!
Answer: LOFT: lack of fucking talent….
I hate all of our linebackers SO MUCH.
They are running us over. No stopping their run plays. Riley…..same old predictable play calling. What a joke. If only he would think outside the box once in a while.
Well, at least Cameron Collins was a 4-time conference all academic honoree. Only 10 in the history of the conference and the 2nd from OSU. Is that a highlight?
At this point I’ll take it.
I bet he’s wishing he accepted the Stanford offer…
Bright side is this is the last game for senior offensive lineman. That’s what this game represents to me.
Can we ask the whole offensive line to leave?
Riley. You suck! Retire and quit putting OSU through your ineptitude!
Oregon does do a pretty nice job of disguising their blitzes.
Their D is underrated.
I can’t watch it. I have the TV on but it would require too much beer to have to look. I think I’ll go mow the lawn.
I’m really glad the basketball team won today.
Would it be bad form to hope for a minor injury to Mannion, but just bad enough to keep him out of the rest of the game so that Katz could get in and show us something?
From what I’ve read it would probably be Vaz and not Katz.
Good point. Too bad for Katz.
Katz has checked out
Any chance we keep them from scoring before the half is over? I just don’t think so
Beavers defense proves you wrong!
Mike Riley proves me right..haha
Nice! Any chance we manage the clock wisely to finish the half?
Angry called it…..now begins the missed tackles…. Tired defense
Common we need some points before the half.
It’s not Riley, but this is where you need a running QB.
Riley had one. He benched him after telling him he wasn’t allowed to run, ever.
I doubt Riley told him not to run.
If Mannion could have run there has to be a ton of space
Mannion is off today. Wonder if the interceptions and sacks are really effecting him. He’s normally much more accurate than this. Something is up.
What is Mannion’s deal today?! I know it’s not all on him but I haven’t seen him look this lost this season.
Agreed. This is by far Mannion’s worst performance of the season. He’s throwing behind open receivers, and regularly misreading the defense. Maybe it’s simply Mannion wilting under the pressure, but I suspect that Oregon’s defense is doing things for which Mannion was not prepared beforehand. That could explain why Mannion seems unsure of himself out there today. Interesting to see whether Riley and Langsdorf can make adjustments and whether Mannion can play better in the second half….
Mannion with another hyper-inaccurate throw. Been off all day, good work.
Has anyone else commented upon Chip Kelly’s resemblance to the Pillsbury doughboy?
Would love it if the interviewer poked him in the belly and Chip said “hoo hoo!!”
Haha now we can’t even count to eleven as a team? This is brutal.
I just had to explain to my nieces that they will never see an OSU Civil War win as long as Riley is coach. They are 9 and 10 and 2008 was the first football game they ever watched. They may be in their late 20s before they ever get to see the Beavers win. That is because Riley is a weakling loser who always will remain a loser!
They can get close like in 2009, but Riley will never beat Kelly. If Kelly gets fired/moves on, Riley might have a shot versus the new coach (depending who it is). But he will never beat Kelly.
Impossible to say Riley will never beat Oregon with Chip Kelly.
The Ducks do indeed make it a three touchdown game. Defense has been on the field the whole half. Mannion’s accuracy has been off all game and the offense isn’t doing anything. Defense worn down.
Rileys a joke. No score, no win. We have to live with this loser for 8 more years? Up till now the ducks have been nice to us, not rushing our punter, etc. Second half different story. Rileys got to go.
Look at the brightside. We only have to wait until 2020 when Riley’s contract expires to be good again! That’s only another 8 years of sucking!
That’s assuming he doesn’t make a bowl game in that span. Tack on a year for every Betty Crocker Brownie Bowl.
Yeh, we can go after Erickson, how’s he doing at ASU? 6-6 and going to a bowl game. Would we all be hath with that?
Did you notice the Ducks running between the tackles and we shut them down. Oregon made an adjustment and is running around end. We run between the tackles get nowhere and make an adjustment to run between the tackles. Going to mow the lawn.
I raked leaves lol
Wow, watching the Beavs on offense is offensive. This game is like watching an exhibition between a college team and a high school team (well, if ever such a game were to be played, it would look about like this). The disparity btwn OU and OSU is like a mile-wide chasm. Only Q in this one is if OSU can keep OU under 65 today. I think we’ve seen the only score OSU will put up. :(
You mean UO
Wait, I thought Boise St. was banned from wearing blue jerseys on their blue field.
WTF! 19 seconds and a chance for a do over on the kick and MR takes a pass! You aren’t gonna get any mo like that, and then the much expected inside hand off and let the clock run out, sheesh!
It’s 19 seconds. Mannion has struggled with accuracy all game and you aren’t gonna get all that far in 19 seconds. I guess you could throw a hail mary though.
Exactly why I would have taken the re-kick! And yes, you could throw a hail mary…what’s to loose?
Most disappointing to me: Beavs with zero momentum, down a score, at the 50 yard line with a punter who can throw, and Riley doesn’t call a fake. I mean, if they were going to get back in the game they needed a big play/gimmick play; they’re not going to beat Oregon man to man. Perfect opportunity for that, and instead Riley punts it away. Oregon promptly marches down the field and claims momentum (and the game). Even if the punt fake fails, it shows the coach understands momentum and what it takes to win a game like this. Did he really believe his defense (which was gassed in the 1st quarter), would continue to hold down Oregon? A team with nothing to lose should play like a team with nothing to lose.
Can’t understand it either, especially when you have a guy on the opposite side who goes for it every time they’re on your side of the field.
IMHO every time Hekker punted outside his 40 (all season long) there should have been a pass option available. EVERY TIME, you can’t pull the fake punt only when it is expected. What a waste of an ability which doesn’t automatically come with every punter!
As far as adjustment goes, none of the coaching staff, including Riley, knows how to adjust to anything. Our defense is just going to get run over. Ducks are running against us at will I believe 2nd half will be worse. Old Riley, on the sideline chewing his gum and putting on his chapstick.
On TV Brock says “Alioti says the Beavers like to pass on 3rd down” Haha, 1st down run for 2 yds between the tackles, 2nd down incomplete pass, what the hell do you think is coming on 3rd down, another run between the tackles?
Exactly. I thought that was sort of a stupid statement. What else will a team who can’t run the ball to save their lives do on 3rd and 8 or 9 or 12? Golly gee whiz, I wonder if they’ll pass?
I can’t believe there are any Riley apologists left. The guy is beyond pathetic.
Would it be possible to cover Paulson or is that physically not possible?
My turn to go mow the lawn. If Wisconsin makes it to the Rose Bowl do you think MR’s good friend Paul Cryst will call him for any advice to beat the ducks? Haha
yuck it up coaches next season starts now….
Ducks demeanor is almost like they feel sorry for the Beavs. They all saw the film and knew what was going to happen. It is numbing how wide the chasm has become.
I can see over 6,000 emails going to useless Bob D and another 15,000 to Riley and they trash them all with the press of a key. Riley will blame team for the Civil War loss as usual and then take off for a 7 day vacation at a religious retreat.
Spring ball is right the corner
Without any bowl game extra practices how are we going to win One game in September???
They will play Nicholls State in the opener. They will win that. Let’s not get too crazy. The team will be improved. All the embarrassing walk-ons will no longer be on the line. Fred Thompson will be playing. Mannion will be better. Wynn and Crichton will be better. Secondary should be good. Gonna need the linebackers to improve though.
They’ll be in a bowl game next year, IMO. But of course Riley will cost them a game or 2 that they should win because he’s horrible.
Was that stupid-ass Watkins with the PF?
I can see USC overtaking the Ducks next year if Barkley stays. Thomas has not really improved.
USC can win a national championship if Barkley stays. They will be the best team in the nation. They would likely smash Oregon at the Coliseum.
I wouldn’t mind hearing a little about the investigation, commentors seem to have forgotten about that!
These fake injuries, trying to slow our defense down!
And LaMichael just hit his elbow on the ground, if he’s injured from that, he needs to try drinking some milk. But I maintain he isn’t a real football player anyway, so I wouldn’t be surprised.
LaMichael better get his ass to the NFL before it’s too late!
Welch should have been in the mix months ago. Look what Mike Riley just realized!
That was a LONG celebration for Pleasant, for a personal foul. Good work.
Yes, Vandy is going to be bowl eligible!
hey angrybeavers,
this game is pretty much the disaster we all predicted….i’m almost glad rodgers couldn’t be a part of it as it would have been his last game. sigh.
I think I’ll go mow the neighbor’s lawn…
I feel kinda sorry for the oregon offense. They just showed them on the sideline and those guys are looking beat. Too much running up and down the field. Their D needs go give OSU a couple of series so the o “O” can catch their breath.
Getting penalty breaks, but Riley refuses to put in plays throwing down the field. Play calling as if we were ahead by 3 touchdowns…………sack prediction on Mannion looks right on……I agree with Angry that we are not playing like we have nothing to lose, but we should be.
I can’t understand why our tackle can’t block a corner blitz? Colin Kelly just let the corner out muscle him for a one-on-one sack.
About the 3rd time. Perhaps because he’s terrible.
He’s really bad. His upper cap is “serviceable” in a year or two…
I expect him to be beat out (Enger?–Should be a tackle) next season, but Riley won’t recognize it and/or will be stubborn.
Hekker puts perfect backspin on the punt and the Beav knocks it into the end zone!
not sure we will be better next year. Just older…..
Where’s the improvement in the OL going to come from? Who are the projected starters next year?
Darryl Jackson, Josh Andrews, maybe Michael Phillipp, Kelly, and possibly Seumalo. Jackson, Andrews and Kelly for sure will probably be starting. I hope Phillipp and Seumalo are the guards. This will mean Cav and Riley actually moved Phillipp to guard.
So UCLA goes to the championship, but could end up not bowl eligible, right? They end up 6-7 with losses to USC and Oregon? Maybe Slick does not survive.
Maybe Riley gets his dream job at UCLA. Naaaaa that’s too much too hope for.
Phillip, Seumalo, and Daryl Jackson should be in the mix
Yikes. Two of them might have great potential but have no game experience AND haven’t have time to develop physically. Seems to be a recipe for disappointment.
Even without Jackson and Seumalo having game experience they’re much better than Remmers and Ellis
Could be but we won’t know until they’ve been in combat for a couple of months. It seems like there’ve been too many times where an instant star took a year or two to play up to their potential, if ever.
Been disappointed too many times to get to amped up this early in the process (about 2 kids who’ve never been on the field).
Has Josh Williams played this year?
Where is Agnew?
sideline
Trying to hold on to the football.
Another OR recruit we didn’t have enough money for…
Should put Katz in to make it go full circle….
OSU put all its money into Riley lifetime contract, thanks to brilliant idiot Bob D.
Riley doesn’t have a clue. I am so sick of seeing him chewing gum and with that shit grin that he knows it doesn’t matter how often he loses. Time to go Mike.
now I know that everything is right in the world. Remmers got another false start.
2nd and 15, throw it straight sideways..
CLASSIC RILEY!
Wow – that pass play was good for 1/2 a yard
Untouched straight up the middle for the sack. I hate our line almost as much as I hate our linebackers.
I don’t know what video you all are watching, but I’m watching JediASU’s college something or other and they rarely show Riley and when they do, he’s just standing there – maybe his earphones aren’t even connected. The announcers are trying so hard to be apologists for OSU.Well, only a few more minutes and we’ll be out of our misery. No lawns to mow just now in Montana – but I did throw some snow around.
BTW – Helena’s Matt Miller made a highlight catch today for Boise State. Riley did try to recruit him and Bobby Petrino even came to town to talk to Miller – who’s probably glad he is at BSU.
Riley totally gives up in beginning of 4 quarter, team knows it…..they give up also……….Riley is a jerk.
I believe the so called interview with Riley and USC was a scam…..designed between himself and stupid Bob D.
Looks like it worked!!
Why in the hell are they having Poyer return punts in a game that’s out of reach?
600 yards of offense by Oregon to 170 by the Beavers. *sobs*
So glad the Beavers basketball team is 5-1 after watching this pitiful football season.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a Duck/Badger Rose Bowl
Badgers have the ability to keep Oregon off the field with the way they run the ball with Montee Ball and Russell Wilson throwing the ball. Some probably think Oregon will win big but Wisconsin is pretty good.
Did Bobby D get a bonus for locking up Riley in that long term contract?
That was a nice catch by Cummings.
Mannion fumbles, offense looks worse than the Springfield High School team just down the street.
Riley all smiles on sidelines. Smirk, Smirk, Smirk
Mannion looked like a fucking JV high schooler out there today.
Riley needs to go. This team wins maybe 3 games next year. Bank it.
JV high schooler? overreaction much? 3 win team next year? I could not disagree more.
You’re delusional.
Were you asleep for the last hour and a half?
Mannion had pretty good pass protection in the first half and chucked garbage balls around like he had his fucking eyes closed.
You really think bringing Phillip’s pussy ass back and throwing two noobs with zero playing time in the game is gonna help?
You’re one of these retards who thought james and tank coming back 5 games into the season was going to help aren’t you?
WFO, From what I have seen, your arguments involve a lot of ad hominem attacks and general overreactions. Mannion was sacked a couple times, and was facing a lot of people dropped back into coverage. Non-Garbage balls can look pretty garbagey when there is really only one option on 3rd down and the other team knows what it is. That said, the freshmen have nto improved much. And the weaker teams in the Pac-12 are unlikely to stay weak, and thus are unlikely to be easy wins for us next year. Something does need to change.
Not saying you are entirely wrong, but if you are right, you will not be likely to win support the way you are saying it.
Am I running for mayor?
Who gives a shit about support?
This team has some good players. It also has a bunch of scout team scrubs and horrible coaching.
This means the team as a whole FUCKING SUCKS SHIT. This isn’t chess. This isn’t tennis. If the team sucks you lose to teams that don’t.
Not my problem if you can’t handle it.
Is there a reason why OSU can’t have a multi threat QB? Is there a by-law I am missing?
We’ll have to have ask Mike Riley
I’m not saying Mannion is not the guy, but in today’s college football landscape why limit yourself?
Imo OSU doesn’t have the talent on the OL for anything other than what they’re playing.
Wouldn’t a running threat help that?
It takes talent on the OL in order to have a running game, especially one like the ‘ucks use.
To answer your question: It seems to me there’s a greater chance of a QB getting hurt if he’s doing running plays. OSU usually is only able to recruit one talented QB at a time and at that they sometimes have to pick up somebody else’s reject.
There is a rule against mobile qbs. Do you remember the Boise Qb quote about his OSU visit? He was sent to play catch with grad assistants because he did not look like the Riley/Langsdorf model. They only look seriously at guys 6’3″ and up with big arms and “pro-set ” characteristics. They do not care about playmakers because they believe they can manufacture them.
Hey, we’re about as good as UO’s backups!
Do the ‘ucks have the 2nd or 3rd string D out there?
Yeah, they did.
Face it gentlemen, Riley does not like any change. His offense won’t change, his position on not wanting to run a QB won’t change and he will die using his out dated Pro offense. You want change, get rid of Riley. Then we will have a chance to win……not until then.
BeaverBeliever21……WFO is right on the money.
It’s an opinion.
If you’re an orange colored glasses wearing imbecile.
Really?! Because I say Mannion didn’t look like a JV High schooler I’m an orange colored glasses wearing imbecile? Why are you so mad over a football game? It shouldn’t be that serious.
Call it like I see it homeslice.
If you think this team won’t suck next year you’re fuckin high.
5 wins MAX. And don’t go chalking nichols st up in the win column yet big fella.
Huard is full of shit….. the LSU game was not close
102 plays??????
Well, Kelley does show mercy, and has the backups in, and our D did pretty well early and held UO down in early scoring, so my prediction of 60+ aint happening.
But we were not competitive. Kelley pats Riley on the back, and hopes he keeps his job thru his contract and OSU stays a doormat…
PITIFUL!!
It’s sad that the fire is gone from this rivalry. I thought the Ducks/Kelly almost felt sorry for the Beavs as the result was forgone conclusion. The Ducks are always thinking nationally, a vastly inferior Beaver team means nothing to them, it might as well be Nevada in a non-conference game..
The season is mercifully over. Thank god.
Ducks win 49-21. I predicted a 49-17 loss. I was close.
I think Buker or Fentress actually nailed it.
Thank god it’s over! What an embarrassment of a team.
This game was 49-7.
Kelly gifted Riley and this shit squad 2 TDs in junk time against the UO scout team.
Shit squad? No need to be an asshole, the players worked hard (mainly the defense)
6 good players doesn’t make a good squad. If that makes me an asshole oh fuckin well.
Welch looked awesome.
It has nothing to do with how good the players are, but to shoot them down when they are trying just isn’t right. You should be blaming this on the coaches not the players, that’s what I’m getting at.
Now we can be thankful for a good basketball team, it definitely takes the load off of this shitty season.
I think the b-ball has already won as many non-conference games as last year. Weren’t they 5-6 last year?
Something like that.
Everyone is pretty pissed/disappointed right now, and rightfully so. But you still don’t have to overreact. There were positives and negatives to the game:
Negative:
Two early, terrible TOs by Mannion, and his accuracy was horrible in the first half.
OLine couldn’t block a simple CB blitz.
No running game again.
Linebackers that can’t make plays.
TE torched us(likely because our safeties were playing the run so hard, instead of coverage).
The defense had a gameplan, but it was too conservative(just modifications to the base 4-3).
Wheaton got owned all game(bump and run killed him).
Penalties.
Positives:
DLine played solidly, let the LBs make plays(which they couldn’t make).
Secondary was solid for most of the game(again, TEs making plays was part of the scheme).
Offense’s playcalling was varied and interesting.
Caused turnovers. A better team would take advantage of them.
Stevenson looked solid again.
Other than a bad defensive gameplan, the other problems will be semi-alleviated next year by graduating so many bad players(and assuming Mannion develops, but we assumed Katz would last year). And if Langsdorf would just open the playbook up the first 11 weeks, we wouldn’t want to throw him out every week. But Banker has proven that he needs to go; his schemes are archaic, and his linebackers(which he directly coaches) have been the worst group for years. They do nothing, and he refuses to play the young guys instead of the crappy older players.
I hope Seumalo plays DT. Unless they land Salt, then put him at guard, but we really need legit DTs.
Mannion played poorly today. But, Oregon was stopping the run with 4 down linemen. Not much a QB can do when the D has 7 guys to cover 3 or 4 receivers. That’s why the LBs kept picking off passes underneath. I think Mannion will be great one day…probably his Junior year, but possibly as soon as next.
Beavs will win 6 or 7 games next year, and people will stop the “fire Riley” chants and talk about how the team is much improved (not saying this is a good thing, it’s just what will happen). This is how Riley kicks the can down the road and buys time. It’s the illusion of improvement and the illusion of good bowl games (i.e. coming close to Rose Bowls, etc). By 2019, a light will turn on with the apologist fans….they’ll acknowledge Riley’s cap…this will happen when he replaces coordinators, has great talent, still only wins 8 games, and the Sun Bowl committee passes him over for the Cougars.
Something else to think about: Riley is 58. If he’s this conservative and clueless now, imagine him in 2019 at 66? It’ll take him 10 games (instead of 5 or 6) to figure out who should be on the field…
I don’t know about 6-7 wins…is next year’s team, with a bunch of new, young, inexperienced LBs and offensive linemen, and the same running problems(probably) 3-4 wins better than this year? I don’t see it without some drastic improvements.
UO played a 3-2 and dropped one back many times, and stopped the run while completely confusing Mannion. Embarrassing for multiple players.
Like I said above, I was pretty happy with most of the playcalling from Langsdorf, and if he’d just do that every game, people wouldn’t want him fired. But Banker has shown that he can’t gameplan for anything, and his LB group, which he directly coaches, is the worst on the team. He needs to go, at a bare minimum.
The inept offense is sqarely on Mannion’s shoulders this time. Oregon’s defense is pretty good but USC showed last week what a team with actual talent is capable of doing against them.
The playcalling was decent except for wasting downs on futile attempts up the middle. Then a little too much playaction with no run game.
Mannion just couldn’t do anything against the ducks ones.
Once again I have to be a naysayer to you, NO RUN GAME. Which means Ducks can just sit back and play the pass all game, and expecting a Freshman QB to be amazing is beyond ridiculous. Especially when the o-line couldn’t block to save the world.
Oh right, I forgot that repeatedly throwing behind or at the feet of open receivers when you are in the pocket with time to throw is all because of the run game. You betcha.
Let me ask you this, and be honest:
Who looked better, Katz during his half vs Sacst or Mannion vs the Ducks starting D?
You guys are both right so quit bitching. He wasn’t good today, but he also had no run game. Both statements are true.
I mean, he did complete 61% of passes for 300 yards and 3TDs. That is not horrible considering they had no run game and played a good defense (granted, much of that came vs the Ducks’ second team, but their second team is probably better than our starters…)
Let’s not forget two horrible interceptions when the game was still close. But apparently those were somehow caused by a tailback?
Those stats are decieving in that two touchdowns and probably 80-100 yards came against UO’s scout team. Oh let’s not forget Mannion’s fumble.
UO consistantly dropped 7 players into coverage. No college QB is going to have success in that situation, especially not a RS Frosh with 3 seconds to throw before being sacked.
Stevenson proved he is a solid RB, but he is nothing special. He isn’t very explosive, and stutters behind the line too often. He’s solid, nothing more.
I do agree that losing our best DT hurt the team has a whole, but you still have to make plays, and too often players like Collins, Unga, and Robinson just ran straight into linemen, accomplishing nothing. We do have some talent in the younger guys(still no mention of Akuna, who was our biggest recruit in years) but if they didn’t see play this year, why would you think they will next? Unless we have a new DC, I foresee Unga, Robinson, and Doctor starting, and lots of missed plays and tackles. Just like this year.
And while I think Langsdorf’s playcalling was much, much better this game, there are still a ton of holes in our system. For starters, why can every team in the country run a beautiful receiver screen but us? We get stuffed at the line every time. We don’t have a quick slant play in the books(or just never use it). We don’t have an off-tackle run(or again, just never use it). Those are all flaws in the OC.
One of the coordinators needs to go, and I’d honestly rather put up with Langsdorf right now than Banker. Why does everyone in the media love that guy? His defense has been shit for years now.
Alas, another football season comes to an end. I’m extremely disappointed and right now, don’t feel too hopeful about the future. We are still missing a ton of pieces and I don’t feel convinced that the players coming off their redshirt year are really the answer (at least not yet). We can feel hopeful in one sense because we won’t know what we’ve got until they actually start playing and anytime you replace something bad with anything else, there is reason to hope (i.e. hiring a new coaching staff). I just don’t see it.
Since 2006, the number of wins we are seeing is trending downward (from 10 to 3 this season) and the losses have been decreasing (from 4 to 9). We should have seen recruiting trending upward with a 10 win season and two 9 win seasons. Instead, the coaching staff is driving the program into the ground. Will we see any significant changes in the offseason to reignite this team? We need some dramatic changes or we’ll see another 1-4 like start to next year.
We should have seen recruiting trending upward with a 10 win season and two 9 win seasons. Instead, the coaching staff is driving the program into the ground.
Bingo.
Parlaying talent and good seasons into great talent and better seasons. Riley scores an epic fail in that department.
Answer this: how does Jacquizz Rodgers parlay into Terron Ward? Seriously? With an early 2009 Heisman candidate on his roster, the best Riley could sign was a grayshirt 0-star RB without a single D1 offer. Oh, and Malcolm Marable. Riley is terrible at taking results and building upon them…turning them into something better. He’s horrible at it. Atrocious. Just…terrible.
Example #2:
Stephen Paea. And there they are with D2 talent on the field and can’t even get a decent JUCO to commit.
The only explanation is that the rest of the team is so bad. Seriously, if you’re a stud HS running back and you see Quizz calling out his Oline, struggling for yards and bolting for the NFL are you even going to consider this team? With the same gang of nobodies coming back to let you get crushed every play? No way in hell.
Same thing for last years defense. Even with Paea pulling a double team none of the scrubs around him could do shit. Who wants to replace Paea as the one good DT on the team? Nobody good.
But what caused the string to end? Why was there not a top level RB talent clamoring to keep the lineage going? Or how about linebackers? G
Gilstrap died.
Riley relied on him to find talent. Notice as soon as he died, the Beavs haven’t found any hidden gems? Gundy is doing that job now, and that’s why recruiting has picked up again. From 2007-2009 Riley was in charge and clearly not getting the job done. It took Riley 3 years to realize someone has to be watching film, finding talent, etc…that it doesn’t happen on its own. Given Riley’s pace, we should change our name to the Oregon State Sloths.
And Storm Woods, and Agnew.
He recruited a bunch of 2 and 3 star RBs. Which is exactly what he always does.
If Agnew learned to hang onto the ball, I’d feel fine with him starting. A lot of the running game’s problem was the line itself, and a non-fumbling Agnew with a decent line would be a very solid running attack. But we had neither of those things. The line sucked, and Riley lost all trust in Agnew. Now we’re stuck with a solid senior RB, a bunch of untested OLmen, and not a lot of potential for the future.
The one thing I’m concerned about is, while the talent level on the OL hypothetically will be bettter, we still will have to wait for them to “gain experience” because they will be new to the system. So, even if we have better talent, we still will go through a slow start and maybe by the end of the season they will be as good as promised. What the line needs to figure out is who will be the Center and who will be the Right Offensive Tackle? Will Daryl Jackson be able to come in and be as good as advertised? Is Seumalo going to play right away? Jackson, Andrews, Suppalo, Seumalo and Phillip, does that sound about right? Or do you put Kelly at Tackle and move Andrews to Center and move Phillip to Guard?
Is there another running back out there, Storm Woods? who could emerge or is he already discounted like McCants was? Wideouts we look okay, I think who ever is RB an improved OL is much needed.
Defensively, we have much more unanswerable questions. We are weak up the middle. Who will be our DT for next year? We need much more depth at LB. Corners look solid, but what about Safety?
Got a safety commit, don’t know about Storm Woods, there was a lot of hype over him. I hope he can play next year, he’s probably good.
Yes, the gaining experience thing is the problem. We had a lot of young guys playing for the first time this year, but how many of us could point clearly to their development and say, “yep, that was definitely worth it, these guys made real progress this season”. I don’t know, I’m not great at analyzing individual position development or play. I see the offensive or defensive unit as a whole being either good or bad, consistent or inconsistent. I hope the O-lineman situation will be figured out in a hurry and they will be hitting the weight room and getting their conditioning taken care of. I hope that with two pathetic seasons in the books, that the players we have now will try and restore their pride by doing what needs to be done to fix this mess. With the downward trending of the program, it will be up to the players we have now to righ the ship. We will not get the types of recruits we need.
It seems like some of the posters are more than willing to settle for mediocre football. Well, I for one remember what winning football brought to OSU and its fans. It was super and attending or watching a Beaver football game was something special. Now, it is an embarrassing experience to say the least.
The main problem is head coach Mike Riley. He makes the big bucks, as has stated many times before, also responsible for his coaches performance including but not limited to offense, defense, fitness, special teams, training and preparing team for each and every game. He has failed all of the above for over two years now and it is doubtful he will change in the future.
So if you want failed, losing, mediocre football then just sit on your arse, cheer on the basketball team, forget about football all together and wait until the inevitable happens next season. Or, make it your ambition to contact any and everyone you can at OSU and let them know how you feel and what you want done about it.
I like many others posting here are “not over reacting”. We are just plain tired of a failed football program because we know we can, with work, get changes made.
In reality, the truth is most Beaver fans are lazy and complacent and don’t want to do anything. This separates Beaver fans as a whole from what Duck fans would do. They would not tolerate poor coaching for very long. They have a loud voice and it could be heard by everyone at the U of O. Beaver fans voice is just a squeak.
Doesn’t help when you have a complacent athletic director.
Jim Wilson on radio leaning toward “subtle philosophical changes” and no personnel changes in the off season. I usually value his opinion, really hope he is off the mark here.
Wilson is great. He’s so much better than Parker. The guy just straight shoots, never whines, and is always spot on.
I think we’d all be shocked if Riley actually fired Langsdork or Banker. We know it needs to happen, which is exactly why we’d be shocked if Riley did it. At least that’s how I feel.
Would it count as a “philosophical change” if Riley forced his staff to emphasize fundamentals like open field tackling, downfield blocking, and overall hustle?
Is there any doubt that Riley either got more involved in play calling or instructed Dork to open the playbook over that last three games? Not as much as many would like, but play calling improved lately.
Houston, we have a problem…a team that is trending downward since 2006 needs more than “subtle” philosophical changes. If Riley truly believes in the players he has, he owes it to them to find something that works. He needs some rather SIGNIFICANT philosophical changes.
To me, something subtle was adding in the Fly Sweep. The answer isn’t adding in the read option from the spread offense.
Something significant might be the 3-4 defense or the 3-3-5 defense (not that I’m advocating that!)
Something else significant would be to go to the Houston type spread attack. Heck, we’ve got a QB who can throw and we’ve got some good young WRs in waiting with potentially another big one who may stick around to sign in February. I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but this current version of the pro-style offense isn’t working. We just don’t have the horses.
Please, we need more than subtle changes…aaaahhhh!
the nevada experts along with the public had the ducks a 28 point favorite – and thats where the game landed – as expected. coach riley historically makes good strides with his QB in his second year under center – lets hope that trend continues. the ducks chewed us up and spit us out yet again – as expected. i’m so done with football this year and instead am focusing on a pretty good orange express team that should make a run at the big dance but probably a year away. sort of reminds me of the past – football disaster but always knowing a solid hoops season is just around the corner……
I find WFO’s comments to be refreshing and right on. Listen to him, people. Although a lightning rod, whoever he (or she) is, is calling it like it is. Can’t agree more. Remember: vote with your checkbooks this year. When the OSU people begin calling this winter and spring with their hands out for donations, remind them that you will not tolerate such a poor display on the field, and that unless OSU starts to show that they are serious about putting a competitive team out there, you are withholding any donations. I plan to do this, and will continue to do so until they get the message. Let the callers e-mail BDC with your sentiments. Eventually, things may change. Let’s hope that it takes place as soon as possible.
WFO is oversimplifying things, either because he has a position he wants to espouse despite the facts, or because he’s dumb. Not sure which is which.
But saying that the entire offense’s problem was Mannion is clearly stupid. With no line and no blocking, no QB is going beat a top10 team. Sorry, Andrew Luck couldn’t do it and he had MUCH better support. So get off the kid’s nuts. He had some bad decisions and a lot of inaccurate throws in the first half. We all saw that. He’s also been our best first-year starter in a long time, with much less help than Katz, Canfield, Lyle, or anyone else had.
It’s fine to be pissed and demand accountability; that’s what we all want. Just do it with open eyes and intelligent analysis, or don’t do it at all.
Using beaver logic, ucla coach Rick just secured a lifetime contract because he’s now “one win away from a rose bowl.”
you are correct
I really think the O-line is at least two years from being in the upper half of the Pac-12. None of the RB’s scare anyone, and OSU is going to continue to have the same issues it had this year in terms of no need to respect the run game. Mannion will be better, but the keys to stopping OSU will be just as obvious.
The disheartening thing about the lines is it doesn’t sound like any younger players threatened a bunch of under-performing upperclassmen. I hope Jackson can step in right away next year, but SilverStream’s practice reports seem to indicate Jackson did not appear overly attentive, I hope that’s not an indication of an attitude problem. Phillips comes back, but his attitude hasn’t seemed all that great, certainly not enough to capitalize on his physical talent.
I agree with Angry, but Suemalo at DT, but even if JC help comes in. Move Wynn to MLB and move him around a bunch, put Chricton/Fernando at the ends, Welch and Doctor on the outsides. Poyer and Reynolds should be good, the overall problem as usual willl be depth.
Recruiting absolutely has to result in legitimate DI talent at the DT and RB positions. A RB with breakaway speed would do wonders for this team.
Reading through the articles today, it sounds like OSU staff and players are continuing to delude themselves. Degradation can be a slow process that those close to it don’t notice, but its been happening the past several years, staved off mainly by the Rodgers brothers exceptional will and talents.
