NFL Draft

Let's hear where you think Poyer and Wheaton go.

I honestly have no clue, but Dion Jordon at #2 makes me laugh.

Best guess is Poyer 2nd round, Wheaton 3rd round. I think both could go higher (and likely would if they were from football powerhouses). I can't imagine either going 4th round or later. Rod Perry is on record saying we'll be surprised where Poyer goes (maybe a team like the Patriots grabs him late first round? Possible but not probable).

  1. Years from now, when we look back on Bill Clinton's presidency, its defining moment may well be Clinton's rationalization to the grand jury about why he wasn't lying when he said to his top aides that with respect to Monica Lewinsky, "there's nothing going on between us." How can this be? Here's what Clinton told the grand jury:

"It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is. If the–if he–if 'is' means is and never has been, that is not–that is one thing. If it means there is none, that was a completely true statement….Now, if someone had asked me on that day, are you having any kind of sexual relations with Ms. Lewinsky, that is, asked me a question in the present tense, I would have said no. And it would have been completely true."

The distinction between "is" and "was" was seized on by the commentariat when Clinton told Jim Lehrer of PBS right after the Lewinsky story broke, "There is no improper relationship." Chatterbox confesses that at the time he thought all these beltway domes were hyperanalyzing, and in need of a little fresh air. But it turns out they were right: Bill Clinton really is a guy who's willing to think carefully about "what the meaning of the word 'is' is." This is way beyond slick. Perhaps we should start calling him, "Existential Willie."

  2. Who looks solid at CB already, but might take Poyer to get even stronger? That’s how i would interpret a Poyer surprise.

  3. In a “rich get richer” scenario, I’d like Poyer to Seattle, Wheaton to Atlanta (or vice versa) then a seattle/atlanta NFC championship in seattle: Jackson, Rodgets bros, Wheaton, Poyer….

  4. Poyer takes Charles Woodson's place.

    Wheat takes Greg Jennings place.

Pack wins Super Bowl. My dream!!!!!!!!

They both go to the vikqueens……….I projectile vomit.

Predict they both go in the third round. Go Beavs!

    • I don't know how I didn't notice this the first time I saw this.  You are a Minnesota Gopher fan and hate the Badgers (or Fadgers as you have reffered them as) and  a Green Bay fan who hates the Vikings (Viqueens)?  Very intersestings. I do love the pick of Datone Jones.

  5. I'm guessing Wheaton mid to late 2nd (I'd love for Seattle to grab him) and Poyer third. I don't think playing at a 'football powerhouse' would have effected either player's draft position. Oregon State is a big enough name and plays against a high enough caliber of competition that scouts pouring over film have a plenty good idea of their skill sets. The Poyer prediction could be way off if Perry really does have insider info though.

  6. Poyer and Wheaton should be mid to late 2nd round picks. 3rd at worst.

I will also bet one more player gets drafted in the late rounds. My guess is Anthony Watkins due to his special teams play.

    • I'm afraid my favorite NFC and AFC teams have pissed away 1st round picks once again.  Unfortunately, I will be 15 feet under buried in my Beaver fleece jacket when the Lions make the Superbowl.

      • Look on the bright side, Lions did not draft a WR and Matt Millen is back to being an annoying announcer. You sir are a glutton for punishment.

        Go Pack go!!,,,

  7. I'm hearing a lot of New England chatter for Markus. But I'm also hearing that a lot of teams had him rated as a 1B pick who should have gone yesterday. So if I'm hearing this about a team with two picks at 52 and 59, then do other NFL teams hear the same and move first?

I don't know about Poyer… Washington at 51, Green Bay at 55 and SF's second pick in the 2nd round at 61… even the Ravens at 62. But I think he goes in the third round between 64 and 73 with the Jags, Lions, Eagles, Browns and Bucs all in there and looking for value at the CB.

Dion Jordan won't be a bust per se. But he's a bust for where he was drafted. He's a situational OLB in a 3-4 system. Rushing the passer on the handful of plays you're in is nice, but at the third pick you better be able to angle off RB's, drop coverage and leverage inside. I think Ansah can at least do those things and become an every down DE. But he's also a reach at the fifth pick since he's going to spend three years possibly developing into this monster star of a player then be gone to free agency.

Green Bay got the steal of the first round with Datone Jones. If they get a chance to add another underrated DE, their whole defense could be scary next year with a front three of Jones, Raji and X.

I think Kyle Long is a good pick for Chicago despite what Bears fans think. He's not rated out as a tackle, which makes a huge difference. He's going to play inside. And he's NFL ready in the head growing up with his father and having an older brother also in the NFL. He's not a can't miss, but his intangibles only add to his value.

I wouldn't touch Geno Smith with your 10 foot pole. After turning into a four year old after finally losing this past season and hearing he was pouting (not uncomfortably stoic like past QB's stuck sitting alone on day one), this guy screams Ryan Leaf to me.

And I'm interested to see where Marcus Lattimore goes. He's going to be a star in the NFL, but if Jim Harbaugh gets his hands on that kid I'm going to kick stuff.

    • I'm interested to see where Giovanni Bernard goes; he rated out pretty well as a versatile back.

I hope Lattimore's health holds up or he's learned enough about himself and overcoming adversity that he can be happy without football if need be. Some of these young guys literally tear themselves up physically and they have so much identity wrapped up into their football game. The average NFL career is what, 4 years? And he's had two knee surgeries before even getting there?

Hope Wheaton and Poyer get to some winning teams!

  8. Wither now Tebow? Sanchez must be irritated….

Seems like recent USC QB's, who are surrounded by talent while in college, adapt poorly to pro ball when everything isn't in place for them. They don't seem to exhibit much growth.
