Pac-12 Network Price

25

I was curious if anyone heard the price point to buy the Pac-12 Network, specifically with Comcast. My understanding is that there is a National network, and then 6 regional networks. I am curious if I, living in California, could buy the Oregon regional network (this would be akin to FSNW, which I could buy here) and pass on the other regional networks and the National network. Would that cost less? Is it possible? Does anyone (including Larry Scott) know the details yet?

  1. I think it depends on each local cable company decides. They could roll it into an existing sports programming package, with a slight increase in your bill every month or they might decide to carry it like a premium channel.

Comcast in Portland gives us the Big 10 network as part of the sports package (or maybe it’s part of the HD package) so it doesn’t really cost more.

I was under the impression that subscribers would get all 7 channels though, no matter where they lived, but I may be wrong. Perhaps that’s also up to the local cable company.

But if I had to guess, cable would receive all 7 and dish/direct TV would only offer the national and 1 regional network at the first level, then you could buy the other 5 as a 2nd package. They suffer from bandwidth issues and adding 7 channels at one time for all of their subscribers would be pretty demanding on their systems.

  2. My guess is the regional networks are for regions. Not sure that you can get Oregon’s in California. Probably will be able to get it in Vancouver, WA though. National network will obviously be available everywhere. Would be nice if they made it possible to purchase another regional network outside the region for more money but I don’t think there will be that much demand for it so there may be no offering like that.

    • Well, two years ago I could get Oregon’s regional channel here in CA. It was called Fox Sports NW, I believe. Last year that changed, but I found OSU football on either FCS or FSW. Every game except Sac State was on TV here.

  3. I think the bonus for people outside of their schools region is the digital availability. The Pac 12 netowrk/s will be avaliable on the internet much like I believe MLB, the NBA and the NHL do.

I have MLB.tv and I can stream on my computer, iphone, ipad, xbox, apple tv, etc. and I believe that the Pac 12 deal is going to have the same options.

  4. Scott has mentioned multiple times that he wants online availability across as many platforms as possible from the beginning. As to how viable this is for a from the ground product, I wouldn’t say it’s very likely in the first year.

  5. I’m at PDX waiting for a flight and Jared C. is in the boarding area and he was talking to his mom on the phone and it sound like his mom wants/pushing him to go to the NBA. From Jared’s tone I don’t think his mind is made up.

      • Cunningham should declare for the draft. Go to all the pre draft camps and workout for teams. Get feedback from them and make a decision there. The NCAA has a nice rule where a player can withdraw from the draft and return to school if the player changes his mind. The only thing he cant do is hire an agent or have previously declared for the draft.

Doing this will let Jared know what the NBA really thinks of him and he can figure out if he’s ready to make the jump this year or next.

IMO – if he knows he’s a guaranteed first round pick, then he should go. Anytime you are a first round pick in any sport, you need to go.

  6. Angry, what are you paying for Comcast down there on the central coast? Apparently my year promotion is expired here in Napa, and they are now Comcast is charging us 155/month for service+HD+ HD DvR+ internet and modem. Seems kinda steep and I’m starting to shop around. Anyone have any good ideas?

    • You know, I’m down here in Tucson for work this weekend and darn it. The baseball games are in Corvallis. Anyone else see that UofA got ranked as high as #5 this week before dropping a pair of midweek games to New Mexico State? Hopefully that used up some of their arms for this weekend.

      • None of their top pitchers threw in the New Mexico State series. Just a 2 game series to get some hitting work done and see what the bottom of the pitching staff can do.

  7. I wonder how the Big Ten gives their product away for free? I’m not complaining, but I get all of their channels included in my Directv package, yet if I want The Mountain for some reason that’s an extra charge. BTN is a great addition during football season. I hope the P-12 Network gets a sateillite deal also.
