Chandler Connections, Recruiting

57

So as we know, Darrell Garretson was a QB at Chandler.

It turns out his father is the OC at Chandler. The Beavers have three Chandler prospects visiting this weekend: Moran (3-star), Chase Lucas (4-star), and N’Keal Harry (5-star). These guys all think highly of Garretson and have relationships going far back, and Paul Lucas (Chandler) is friends with them as well. The Beavs could sell early playing time. So, I don’t think this visit is purely a sight seeing tour. The Beavs can win this battle if they sell their vision of the future. Playing a good game wouldn’t hurt, either, but the lack of attendance will.

    • Crowd won’t be big for sure. I’m guessing 35k. Empty endzone and upper deck corners.

Crowd attendance won’t hurt their prospects with recruits. The weather might. Mid-low 60s and cloudy. Kids from the desert will get a good idea of what the weather will be if they decide to come here.

These guys will commit because of the coaching staff and the guys they meet. They should get Markus Wheaton on the line to help. He’s a Chandler grad.

  1. Makes that move to bring in Garretson from Utah State look even better, and I already like him as a player. Saw your post and found this on the Chandler Wolves website about his dad.

  2. Another guy to keep an eye on tonight is another Chandler area player (although from a different high school) Ryan Kelley. He’s a 2017 4* QB. Top uncommitted QB in the 2017 class right now according to recruiting sites.
He plans to announce his top 5 tonight. I know the Beavs have been in contact with him(McGiven is the recruiter, but others are in contact with he and his mom), but not sure if we’re a team he’s interested in. He visited oregon a couple weekends ago and loved it, so they’re likely in his top 5. Might be worth a follow, if just for one day.

    Here’s his tweet link: https://twitter.com/Ryankelley_14/status/656682377343692800

  3. Lucas said that ending up at OSU was a “long shot” for him, but that was earlier in the year. We certainly need help, and getting another highly rated recruit would be great. I think we need more help on Defense rather than offense.

  4. Solid visit list this weekend. I saw Andersen said we were likely to take 19 this recruiting cycle. I still have a feeling we trim some fat and end up closer to 25. Hopefully we get some JUCO defensive help.

Also, Nick Mitchell now officially the #2 QB on the depth chart. I think Andersen must do this like Oregon, where they release the depth chart the week after the game, because it was pretty well known that he was getting the #2 reps last week.

  5. @beaverkman. Unofficial visitor for the game. Very solid academics. Slow, with pretty bad strength numbers. Injury prone to boot. Sounds like a Riley recruit from the last few years.

  6. Obviously it’s the coaches that are getting higher tier players to commit… I almost bet you even with poor attendance these recruits will like their visit… I think GA and his staff are great at explaning their vision for the future and that’s the key… It’s not about now, it’s about what they are building to.

  7. Per Gina’s twitter Baldwin says StCH is the started but NM may play against the Buffs. Mitchell taking 2nd team reps all week.

Hey, love to see the kid get a chance and hopefully use the entire offense. Doubt he carries the rock 23 times.

    • I’d love to see Mitchell get a quarter or two. Significant type to be allowed to get over nerves and into rhythm. Only Collins has been afforded that, which is the one thing about this QB situation that really ticks me off. If he were clearly superior, I’d understand that, but he’s been between awful and mediocre, so give the other guys meaningful time in a game. Meaningful time is not a series here and there. It’s a half or more.

      • Significant “time” not “type”

        Type “time” Angry…. : )

I’d also suggest experimenting with the pace to give him the best advantage. If going hurry-up suits Mitchell, and helps the nerves and gives the Beavs an advantage, do it.

  8. Funny that Garretson’s offer other than USU was SJSU – the same school that offered Seth Collins.

Maybe its his destiny to beat out Collins…

  9. I bought 4 extra tickets for this game and may buy more. Impressive list of visitors and possibly one of the only winnable games this year.

  10. Kaelin Himphill , is visiting too. Unofficial visit but hopes he can make it an official visit and make it a full weekend. I’ve said before I really like this guy and hope they land him. The talk of 19+ 2016 scholarships would make that easier. Would be nice to have 4+ in-state guys for future recruiting. This state has some nice prospects coming through the next couple of years.

  11. Watching an episode of “The Drive” or as I refer to it in the Beavs case “The Dive.” Coach Andersen gathers the team and fakes video difficulties two or three times as the entire assembled squad is there to review practice cuts.

After the third failure he says something like “forget it, get on the buses, we’re going to the movies.” He loaded the entire squad on two luxury cruisers and off they went to see “Mission Impossible.” I am the only one to appreciated the irony? Could be this years theme. JB

    • What I hear: he’s there to help family/McGiven and get himself another job.

I hope he’s giving something that will actually help the team.

  12. Anybody have any insight on why we haven’t used Nall more at tailback. I know he isn’t the fastest, but he looks like a bruiser that could seriously pound the ball between the tackles. He has a few decent moments, but they seem to barely give him the ball. I like Sands and Brown too though.

I almost think that we adopt the strategy that the Cincy Bengals did last year which is I-formation pounding the ball and then PA for the big leap down the field. They did it due to a hurt receiving corp, we could do it due to a lack of a QB. I feel like we are running the worst wildcat O instead of a spread O most games.

    • I read a quote from one of the coaches after the last game, something along the lines of “this offense doesn’t have any straight handoff run plays included in it”

Wish I could remember who it was and where I saw it, but if that’s the case, maybe it’s time to include some, rather than relying on the QB reading the defense before making that decision. Our O-line is supposed to be a strength, and with Nall and Woods, we’ve got some options to just run it at the defense rather than finesse it every play.

      • The finesse stuff gets old fast. I don’t know how the Ducks watched that for a decade.

I hope GA stays true to his word and incorporates physical play at some point. They did run Nall up the middle a few times vs Stanford, and it was pretty awesome.

    • Highlight
During scout team work, Seth Collins rifled a ball over the middle to true freshman tight end Noah Togiai, who jump and stretched out to snag the fingertip catch and keep it corralled as he fell to the turf.

This is the highlight? Collins throwing what sounds like another awful ball…

  13. It finally happened: the PO users got fed up with their crappy unresponsive forum, and someone started a new one. Too bad, it was fun to marvel at the sheer UI horror of PO and be amazed that anyone used it.

    • That they use that “Internet contraption” at all is a marvel. I suspect a membership requirement is that one sits – never stands – on the old side of Reser…

      • From a post on new forum:

“But I’m pretty sure PO is on a shared server. Meaning that is someone else on the server gets hacked then PO gets drawn into that mess. Probably why PO will be OK in the early morning. Then it get hacked with a DDOS attack (or whatever) and it goes right back down”

Yeah, I’m sure the new forum which is a subdomain of “freeforums.net” won’t have that problem. No way THAT’S on a shared server!

It’s past time they did something, though, so good for them.

    • Pavilion above north end zone seating looks cool and a few donor seats at top also nice. Only thing I don’t like at all is all the brick they added to the front that is just giant boring slab.

When the front design was all open glass it was 1,000 times better. Not sure what the AD is thinking with that change.

    • I thought the first version looked like a car port on a mid-century home, and it didn’t look like a structure long for this world, or one that fit in well with campus. I think they should have done something solid and more “durable” (not just in material, but in asthetics) with brick consistent with the new side of Reser.
