Home Football Football Seems like a Mess

Football Seems like a Mess

292

No buzz about this camp, issues at QB again, etc.

This report doesn’t help the mood. Sounds somber.

Also, this assessment by GA doesn’t make sense. The WRs are mostly all veterans who have shown they’re able to beat man coverage and make some plays (yeah, Bolden drops passes), but to act like they can’t get open is pretty ridiculous. Is GA protecting Garretson?

Anyway, watching videos the past few days and reading the papers, they make it seem like the program is a disaster. The rational side of me says:

  • Year 1: Have to play with Riley’s guys.
  • Year 2: Clean out Riley’s guys and bring in your own. Bad team.
  • Year 3: Your own guys are young, but things begin to improve. Team might be good, might be bad but light at the end of the tunnel.
  • Year 4: Good team

So I get it. But this is looking like a WSU level rebuild. I was hoping it would be more simple than that. Anyone else worried about GA’s track record with QBs? It seems like a glaring weakness, and he admits he’s not an offensive guy. First impression after reading the reports: this year could be brutal with a young defense and another iffy QB situation.

  1. That 2 minute video interview of GA didn’t seem too out of line with what I expect right now.
Veteran receivers not getting open? No biggie at this point, it’s early and it’s a scrimmage game.

What I liked is GA prepping the team beforehand that this film will be watched very critically. I read this as meaning a message to the younger guys that NOW is when they start deciding who will be playing more with the 1st team. The vets already know they’re in if they’re not getting outplayed by the younger guys in practice.
To me, spring scrimmages are motivating events for the bubble guys to shit or get off the pot.

I’m just bummed I had to miss this event when it’s just a couple miles from my home.

  2. this team could be 50% better than last year’s team on the basis of QB play alone (likely in my view) and still not win more than 2-3 games, such was the gap in talent evident on the field last year.

  3. Just mumbling a bit………. I’m a bit concerned when one of the players goes to Alabama and gets serious playing time, another goes to Florida, sits out a year and is then mentioned as possibly being a starter.

These are schools who have a lot of talent and recruit well (understatement)…. It wouldn’t surprise me if they have walk-ons who are as talented as anyone on the OSU roster.

So the thing that puzzles/troubles me is did GA, DB, etc. blow it by not utilizing the talent they had and SLOWLY transition over to the schemes they want to play. I mean would it have killed them to run an offense that was more like the Riley offense the first year? Is this an indication that they are that inflexible?

To be clear about this let me say that I’m very glad GA is the head coach. Not as enthusiastic about Baldwin but am feeling more comfortable since he’s been “reassigned”.

    • It’s possible that some of these guys are good but had lost motivation because of the losing. It is hard for many people to remain motivated when there isn’t much progress being made (as a team) and they look around and believe that things won’t get much better. We’ll see if GA can manage this part of team psychology.

  4. Biggest need is a top QB. Not a guy who will be serviceable but one who can lift the entire team. None on the roster right now. This means GA will have to score a major recruiting upset. Of the top 12 dual threat QBs, only 3 are uncommitted. GA has offered two but will need to beat out about 15 other schools.

The defense isn’t going to be good so the offense will need to stay on the field so the defense doesn’t get exposed too much.

  5. Comparing this rebuild to WSU is appropriate, but I almost feel it will be even more painful. At least Leach has a consistent vision offensively that he could recruit around. It’s easier to land a top QB and WR’s when you can tell them they’ll be getting stats based on a gameplan that involves mostly passing plays.

I have no idea what to expect from Oregon State’s offense. 3 different QB’s unsuccessfully ran the team last year. WR’s couldn’t catch. 1 of about 5 RB’s had even decent stats. Tough to sell those results to incoming recruits. Add to that the changes at OC, where now we have co-OC’s with little experience running an offense (I think McGiven was OC at Utah State briefly as well as a couple of years in the big sky conference, and Woods never has been in that role)

    • I have no idea what to expect from Oregon State’s offense. 3 different QB’s unsuccessfully ran the team last year.

Plus is it a run, pass, or balanced offense?

It’s easy to define all the teams around the league. WSU=pass, Oregon = Run, yada yada. What is OSU?

It was like a “do whatever” offense.

  6. I share the same concern about the WRs not getting separation against essentially a rookie secondary. Very surprising to hear this about the receiving corp.

What happens if GA doesn’t turn this around? I’m curious what the justifications will be on why he wasn’t successful. Let’s hope we don’t get to that point but I’m with you, Angry…there’s not much too much to get excited about this Spring. Not very many playmakers out there other than maybe Nall at RB.

  7. I get the sense that many are unrealistically looking at Garrettson as a program saver. I’m not seeing anything more than a smallish, average armed, decent mid-major QB. What am I missing? The Beavs still play in the P-12, the talent gap suddenly seems huge and a little depressing.

    • > I’m not seeing anything more than a smallish, average armed, decent mid-major QB. What am I missing?

You’re missing that that’s a massive upgrade over what we had last year.

  8. Moran clearly looked the best of the QBs in the spring scrimmage. I don’t think he had a single bad throw, and showed nice touch. Very quick on his feet too, and showed nice poise under pressure on a couple of plays. Need to put 20 pounds on, stat. Garrettson and McMaryion looked about the same (bad, but much better than Seth this time last year). Probably don’t want to read too much into just one scrimmage though.

Bradford also looked legit. Looks ready to contribute physically and mentally. May end up starting week 1 unless the the rest of the non-Villamin receivers get their act together in a hurry.

    • That sure changed a lot on Saturday. Moran had some terrible throws meanwhile Garrestson looked like diet Aaaron Rodgers out there

    • Wouldn’t that be somethin’? Not only would he have to be better than the other guys but so significantly better that it would be worth burning his redshirt despite the lack of talent around him. That would not be a good thing… unless he is the chosen one.

I might put the odds at about 1 in 10. But, that would require me to find at least 9 other equivalent situations and I don’t think I can.

      • Garretson may be a captain, but if Moran is clearly the best QB in practice, he has to play, right? That’s what we were told last season.

The O-line is my biggest concern regardless. We could have guys with some promise in the backfield, but there’s not much talent or experience there from what I can tell.

  9. It’s just spring practice, so it’s probably a bit too soon to tell how bad this year will be. Once we get the rest of the talent in this fall, things will look a bit better.

I do agree this is going to be a long rebuild though.

  10. Something not being discussed is we’re tied to a coach who runs this offensive system now (whatever it is…), because when GA leaves/retires we’re not going to want to go through another long rebuild.

What’s also possible, and scary, is fans cry for Riley to return and save the program if this continues beyond year 3.

It’s imperative GA gets a QB, and whether he does that or not will define his legacy at OSU. Moran is interesting. Don’t think he’s a program changer, though.

  11. This is reminiscent of the first two years with Jerry Kill here at Minnesota. Part of the talk is to lower the expectations of the fan base.

    • For real according to Gina.
      http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/04/seth_collins_to_return_to_oreg.html#incart_river_index

In response to Bill above, yes someone probably believes that GA asked Seth back after seeing the O this spring. Not me though, I read it as GA responding to a request from Seth and (likely) Seth’s dad. From Gina’s piece re: young men in general and Seth specifically, GA says, “Sometimes they do not always make decisions we agree with, but these can be times of growth for the individual.” and “We have a plan that will take place over the next few months for Seth to earn his way back in the mainstream of our program. He is fully prepared to accept the responsibility and make up for the time he has missed. Spring football is in part a reward for winter conditioning, and as a result, Seth will not participate during the remaining practices.”

My bet; rather than GA looking at his situation and asking Seth back, I think Seth looked at his decision and approached GA. BWDIK

      Next up…………Justin Strong??

  12. I won’t pretend to know the inner workings of the program and what is truly behind all of this regarding Seth, but it does feel like a bit of a clusterfuck from the outside, and one that could alienate some players.

    • Absolutely, to balance the appearances, feelings of all players, and his “my way or the highway” approach GA is gonna have to be a motivational sports psychologist of the first order.

I do note that winning covers many sins and a Slashing Seth O very well could bode well in that department.

      The difference between 3 and 6 wins?…….maybe.

      • With the case of Seth in particular, he should probably have had SC ask the team to have him back.

Not that it would have been more than a song and dance, but it may have shown some humility and bridged the gap a bit with those affected most.

        • “I’m very humbled that my teammates and coaches have provided me the opportunity to rejoin the team,” Collins said. (from Gina’s article)

          • And, in the same vein, Horowitz is quoting Andersen,“The return of Seth to our program is a decision supported by the leaders of this team, our coaching staff and myself,”

    • Right?
I just finished writing how it seems like a disaster, and then Collins returns…

But, I do like Collins at a utility spot. It’s just all the drama and that it points to crappy internal problems. Time will tell who the problem is, but if it is GA that sucks.

      ———–
“It’s important to note that since arriving at Oregon State, he has been an excellent student and has had zero off-the-field issues.”

Having a kid at 18 isn’t an off the field issue?

  13. Yay!

    More slash ball!

Hand off to Nall. Slash it. Hand off to Cook. Laugh at the D and their bewildered looks. Slash it again.

That was some fun stuff to watch.

  14. Northern Illinois is in DeKalb. Perhaps he visited. The program is good, but talk about a shock for a Cali kid. Flat as aboard in a sea of corn.
He might have got a reality check by talking to other folks than daddy. This makes the season much more interesting. If GA can manage the team/ ego thing, props to him.

    Viva la Vulva!

  15. Angry wanted some buzz. With this news I’d say he got some.

Now I’m hoping that we don’t have a situation where Garretson gets hurt and you-know-who is back at QB.

  16. The Clown show continues. Having a child is an off the field issue? That says a lot about you Angry.

And your 99% right clip is dropping.

    • If you don’t have a narrow view, sure. Are you saying becoming a father isn’t a stressor? Becoming one at 18 isn’t more so?

I think it’s a lot more about growing up in order to be there for a child. And most athletes recognize that in the end. But there have been some who don’t come to that conclusion.

So the important note should have clarified further with zero negative off-field issues. I would consider one of a handful of major life events as an issue… at least.

      • Stress? Absolutely. I have a 5 week old, I know exactly what it is. But to call it an off the field issue?

Seth is 20 by the way, not 18. But sure stressful whether you’re 18 or 38. Issue? That’s a stretch from someone who’s bashed the kid for a year.

        • It’s an issue. And it’s a major one. Whether it’s good or bad is taken on a case by case basis. Overall, I would say it’s a good issue because these kids find structure and responsibility where they are. And when they finally realize it’s not just about them anymore, they tend to become quickly sober to reality.

It should be more noteworthy that the issue is a positive for him given its importance in his current and future life. I think it’s as good or better than a college degree, which was intimated.

          • STG having a kid shouldn’t be noted as an off the field issue. I’m sure MANY of us here could have easily been in the same boat at his age. The Pull out method doesn’t always work.

At any rate he is a welcome addition back. Makes the offense much more dynamic.

          • What I’m saying is that it (which is or isn’t true) is an issue like going to school and doing well is also an issue.

Turns out people are arguing for or against something so vague, it’s not even about any one issue any more.

And boy, I’ll tell you. It’s going to be one helluva an argument. And the Mexicans are going to pay for it.

        • You should know by now that everyone on here has it out for Seth Collins. He hasn’t particularly done anything to offend anyone here besides “through the grapevine” type drama. They are quick to love him in game, but are hyper-critical of him off the field (well.. on too).

  17. Interesting comments from two of the more successful OSU coaches on campus right now about how long it takes to turn around a program. Perhaps OSU football fans simply need to be more patient…

“I was talking with (Oregon State women’s basketball coach Scott Rueck) when we congratulated each other when we first saw each other (last Tuesday) on our seasons. His comment was man, what you’ve done in two years is great and you can’t build a culture in two years. People don’t understand that. You see what he’s done and it’s incredible. But it does take several years, several recruiting classes to really get your blueprint going.”

    • Did I read somewhere that Lucas was going to be the slash player in Seth’s absence? Even throwing some passes? Regardless I think he’s backing up Seth’s spot.

      • We speculated on here that he was the leading candidate for the job after seth left. But I don’t think that it was a “thing”, just thoughts on a blog.

Apparently the coaches also have Lauina at LG; I favor Clarkson

On D, I agree with the coaches when they put Ovgard as a starting safety.

Eggers says the coaches have Kearsly ahead of Uncle Leo; who ever gets the job is gonna be a big part of any offensive success.
This from the GT on UNCLE LEO… he did not play center while at Los Angeles Harbor College, in fact, he “has not snapped the ball in a game since playing Pop Warner”

  19. HEADS UP:
Recently Gina teased an upcoming piece on GA and how his approach is evolving as he heads toward Fall Camp. The recent Seth news will likely be addressed (my guess); maybe the timing of today’s announcement is even related.

We now return to the circus…
    CARRY ON.

  20. Having Seth back is nice, dude is rail thin so we’ll see if he goes Walter Payton like last year or smartin’ up ala Jerry Rice. +2 wins If he and Nall stay healthy.

    • Not sure if a guy named JockItch merits a response, but to in any way compare Seth Collins to Payton and Rice, or really to even put them in the same sentence is a major insult to two of the best ever. A kid that’s been committed to 3 schools in the past 12 months has absolutely nothing in common with them.

      • I thought it was a good comparison. Remember he is Seth the Great. The point was more about him avoiding tackles. Am I the only one who saw Collins lowering his head/shoulder into would be tacklers, instead of going out of bounds or hitting the deck ….?. LOL

        • I thought it was intuitive because their techniques are the models for what players try to do. They were great. We want to be great. We emulate greatness. There are different paths to greatness.

The fallacy is when tweedle then goes off on you for conflating “a kid” on a path to greatness and him being great, which you obviously did not do.

It’s just an “Uff da!” moment.

  22. What’s the take on Hodgins? If he is a legit 4*, I am surprised he doesn’t list more schools, though he may just want to stay in the NW. Sounds like OSU could have a chance. Does the Baldwin connection figure strongly, or does Baldwin move on soon? Does Hodgins wonder if he’s OSU has a qb who could get him the ball at this point? Seems like Moran could be a decent selling point for the future.

    http://www.oregonlive.com/recruiting/index.ssf/2016/04/isaiah_hodgins_4-star_wr_delay.html

Leave it to Collins to spark up interest to an otherwise dull spring?

I think Decoud is going to have a very good year, and Coach Hall is going to elevate the play of DBs overall.

    • I think it’s a legit ranking. Same size as Jordan Villamin and he’s only a junior in hs. Huge hands and wingspan and catches everything thrown in his vicinity. Doesnt play against top competition because he goes to a small private school, but he also dominates in his league.
His dad is former SL Ram James Hodgins. Super Bowl champ.

Beavs were onto him way early because Baldwin used to coach his dad at SJSU. If you asked me 6 months ago, Beavs were the standout frontrunners to land him, but I think the QB issues and Baldwin demotion have hurt our chances. Having Brennan coaching WRs is a big plus for us though.

February is so far away. He’ll get a ton more offers between now and then.

    • hmmm, if she’s as motivated and intelligent as she sounds, I’d guess Cal for the education. If she wants to get deep into the tournament, I’d say OSU.

If she’s deceived by the grandeur of university/corporate conflation, UO. Maybe Nike hints at some bennies when she’s in the WNBA (if it still exists).

      • Her brother’s going to Nikegon… and she’ll get an XBox in her locker… where she can conference with Tosh Lupoi… ?

It’s her choice. And the only motivations I’d ascribe after her decision are those she shares with anyone.

  23. I like the sound of this;

“Andersen is a defensive coach by nature, and a bit old-school in offensive philosophy. Once OSU’s second-year coach gets his talent in place, his teams will feature ball control and a sound running game.

“Depends on personnel from year to year,” he says, “but I’d say, in general, I like to be about 60 percent run, 40 percent throw. That’s a comfortable area in which to live. It could end up 70-30 (run to pass) or going a bit the other way, but we want to run the ball first.”

    • Oregon State has depth and variety at running back. The starter will be 6-2, 235-pound sophomore Ryan Nall, the former Central Catholic Ram who carried 14 times for 59 yards and a TD and wore the look of a back who gets stronger as the day goes on. Andersen’s hope is to get the ball in Nall’s hands about 25 times a game — perhaps 20 runs and five receptions.

Nall won’t be an every-down guy, though. Andersen’s aim is to use three tailbacks. One of them will be Paul Lucas, the fleet 5-11, 185-pound sophomore who showed in bursts last season he could be one of the Pac-12’s best breakaway threats. Lucas is dealing with a minor hamstring injury and didn’t play in the scrimmage. He’ll play some receiver, too, and carry the ball on fly sweeps and reverse plays.

“Paul’s skills are way different than the other guys,” Andersen says. “He gives you a whole different punch where he can run more of the outside stuff. We’d like to get the ball in his hands at least 10 times a game.”

That leaves transfers Tim Cook and Kyle White — and possibly holdover junior Damien Haskins, though the latter is dealing with a serious neck issue. For now, it appears the 6-1, 235-pound Cook and the 6-foot, 190-pound White will vie for the third tailback spot.

In Oregon State’s final seven spring practice sessions — including three the week following the spring game — Nall’s workload will decrease, with Cook and White “getting every rep they can,” Andersen says. ”

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/301420-176738-portland-base-vital-to-osus-andersen-

Andersen’s remarks make me wonder if Seth’s return may have been facilitated by Andersen due to Andersen’s dissatisfaction with the WR play?

    • Read the o-live article on seth. It makes it sound like seth asked to come back, GA went to the captains and asked if it was good with the team to let him back in. I don’t see GA groveling to players at all.

    • Regarding the backs, in the scrimmage, they ran it a lot. Nall primarily (and he looked physical) but Cook looked the part and had some nice runs. White can’t catch and looked to be 3rd in that race.

During the drills they were running before the actual scrimmage, Bradford dropped the 2 passes I saw thrown his way (obviously he had more) like he had hands of concrete. However, during the scrimmage, he seemed to catch everything thrown his way. Seemed to have built some chemistry with Moran.

Just looking at the sidelines, they have a guy named Yancy who is so incredibly short.. .listed at 5’5″ but looked even smaller. Never saw him get in.

  24. I actually like that Collins is back. I was stoked with him as a WR/hybrid player and thought it was the perfect fit for his skill set. If he’s mature all the better, but I’ll believe that when I see it. Maybe all this turmoil did mature him. Maybe he’s thinking for himself instead of letting his father do his thinking for him, which would be a step toward maturity. Overall this is good news even though I didn’t like his old personality (will wait to see the new one before passing judgment).

    • *Meanwhile angry has never met Seth Collins in person in his life and makes rash judgements about his personality secondhand*

          • Have you?

His judgments are not sourced.until then, they are opinion. Why do you attack them as if they are something they are not?

The clear answer is that you ran out of tissue.

        • It is an ad hominem. I’m impressed you know that. Been doing some reading, have we?

Judgment of a person can be dealt without meeting said person. Public words and actions are fair game. Your argument would be valid if you said those factors are not the whole and left it at that.

          And rash?

          You can seem clueless sometimes.

      • You act like no one should voice their opinion unless it’s based on fact. If that was the case then it wouldn’t necessarily be an opinion. And if everyone didn’t say or write one word unless it was a fact then this would be a really boring blog. And I’m guessing you come to this blog because it isn’t boring (just my opinion, not necessarily fact).

    • What was his dads quote after he announced Seth was leaving? Something like, “I raised Seth to be a quarterback”. It screams of Todd Merinovich. Maybe Seth broke the chains to be his own man. Only time will tell.

        • No Todd didn’t figure it out until his 4th or 5th drug arrest. Seth has a chance to become a great muti-threat football player. Is Todd really in Sisters?

        • Actually Seth paintings would be pretty awesome. Just paintings of him hurdling over things, like a bowl of fruit, or a mountain meadow. Maybe paintings of him hurdling other famous paintings, like the Mona Lisa, or some of Picassos work. I think I just found him a gig if he doesn’t go pro.

  25. Anybody know of any big visitors coming this weekend?

Nemec teased it would be a big week, and so far I’ve seen Hodgins, Kolby Taylor, Sire Woods and Elijah Hicks. I’m assuming any of the kids from in state and washington being recruited will be coming too. Any other big names?

  26. I got to see Beav commit Mitch Verburg pitch last night. Not overpowering but controlled the zone well. Negatives: I saw he ate the last of some dill pickle flavored seeds so that’s a glaring off the field issue. And Casey didn’t make the LO coach restrict his pitches, so Casey is sure the blame for any arm issues in the future.

    • Eating the seeds is an issue. And I’ll trust your word that it was both glaring and done off the field. I don’t know why it would qualify as anything negative or positive or why anyone would care about it. But you’re you. So there’s that.

Why would Casey make anyone who doesn’t work for him, play for him or is one of his legacy do anything? That’s just dumb.

You had to introduce some poor kid’s name into your ongoing stream of silly trolling? These kids are your personal tools for whatever it is you think you’re doing?

      Nice.

      • Poor kids? Haha. As if Collins has deserved anything thrown his way by this blog.

I did watch Verburg pitch last night, and he did look solid.

          • Adding on to A@A, no the hate for Collins isn’t warranted and he’s been taking a beating on this blog for no honest reasons. Please enlighten me what he has done to offend anyone besides not being the right choice for QB and the apparent consensus on here that his dad is not liked. He’s not Legarrette Blount, he hasn’t punched anyone.

          • I feel like you guys are missing the whole point of this blog. This blog is “A Critical view of Oreon State Athletics”. It’s not “An orange-colored glasses view of Oregon State Athletics”. This means no one gets a free pass here. Not GA, not WT, not PC, and certainly not STG. Sure, all of these guys have done some good things, and they get acknowledged here, but none of them are perfect so those imperfections are going to get called out here as well. If you feel like you need to defend someone then so be it, but don’t act like every negative thing some says is a personal attack. It’s just the nature of this blog. If it hurts your feelings I would recommend looking elsewhere for rainbows and unicorns.

          • There is no consensus here. If you haven’t learned that, then I don’t know what to tell you guys.

You’re outliers here not because of your messages. You’re so because you don’t support your arguments with valid complaints or praises for anything.

          • Jack, I’d LOVE to know what I haven’t supported with valid praise or whatever you’re looking for. Or better yet, anything Angry has said about Collins, has had zero validity. It’s all rumor and speculation. Storm Woods was actually pretty complimentary of him last year.

What isn’t valid with my argument in favor of Casey? He’s an annual coach of the year contender. 2 time National Champ. Been to Omaha, what, 4 times? Produced 1st round picks. Made players rich. All this while being a great example for the community.

As I’ve said before no man is perfect, but what is the point of trying to point out “warts” that Casey has? Hes possibly the best coach the school will ever have. you won’t get a better coach. So sure, if you want to be critical, go ahead and reach for something. but there’s also no point in it. So if angry wants to waste his energy, and look like a fool in doing it, go ahead angry and criticize Casey all you want.

          • Dude, you justify Casey’s action of leaving a pitcher in the game way too long by saying Casey is the best coach the school has ever had. You can’t see your own straw man here?

          • For those criticizing Casey flaws, that is all fine and dandy, but what exactly do you propose be done about it? All gripe, no solution. If it’s find a better coach good luck.. this isn’t a Mike Riley we are talking about.

          • Doozel and Jack, I’m not sure what you’re obsession with “straw man” is. There’s nothing vague about my point. Bitching about Casey is like saying you don’t like the sky being blue. The sky is blue, and it’s going to be blue. Casey Is who he is.

          • Doozledorf this has been explained to him several times. He either likes arguing or is really, really slow. It’s similar to the person that never could program a VCR. Doesn’t get it, never will get it, it’s pointless and a waste of time to even bother. Just move on and ignore Corky.

          • Whiskey, Doozel, you guys are right. I’m on the bandwagon. Let’s bitch about Casey and see what happens. I’m sure it’ll lead us somewhere.

          • Being critical of imperfections is how one becomes better. And those that stand out are easy to see. Better info could help you. But you provide none. You just appeal to authority and hope that’s enough to get by in life. Casey is a good authority in which you can appeal for great college baseball coaches. And let’s be clear. You are the only person who introduces anything negative about Casey. Pointing out imperfections isn’t negative. It’s pointing out imperfections. But you seem to think that’s the whole of someone’s argument, and you reduce it to the absurd. And then you move the goalposts to make it less absurd when you can’t find one shred of material to support anything you claim to be accurate.

If angry said he didn’t drink milk, you would yell and scream that he said he hated Wisconsin… and what does he have against milk?

And then we all get to look at your post with that WTF? look on our faces and tell you he never said any such thing. And after a couple nuh-huh’s from you, you tell us you said he said he hates milk… so why is everyone looking at you that way?

And then we go find the posts you somehow think you reference and discover a half page down within a discussion where many differing points of view are expressed that he has an intolerance, you look the same as you always do–a fool.

And then, in the face of that, you break out your mommy issues and filth and just go all pre-pubescent on those who wondered what the hell you were saying in the first place.

            That’s what you do.

The sky isn’t blue right now, genius. It has grey clouds in it, and it’s sporadically raining. I just pointed that out if you want to argue four months from now that I absolutely said I hated the universe and, by your logic, all astrophysicists.

The easiest conversation you could have had would have been to say that Casey plays injuries and discipline close to the vest, and personnel decisions are sometimes dictated by things unknown to the fans and media. That wouldn’t cover all instances, and that would be discussed. Then you would say that he’s stubborn sometimes, but you’ll take that because you think he makes up for it in other ways that would suffer if he wasn’t his stubborn self… or sometimes gets a wild hair and bunts a man to second with one out.

Then we would say you were a reasonable voice. And still some might disagree on some of the details. But you would have said your peace, and many would have learned from you.

Instead, you are just one off the rails mass of confused train of thought wandering in a constant state of butt-hurtedness.

          • For those criticizing Casey flaws, that is all fine and dandy, but what exactly do you propose be done about it? All gripe, no solution. If it’s find a better coach good luck.. this isn’t a Mike Riley we are talking about.

See? You reduce it to the absurd. Pointing out that Casey has a couple tendencies that are detrimental to the team at about the correct rate they are detrimental to any team means that person wants to fire Casey. Circle the wagons and cover the children’s ears! Bad bad mean people are saying hateful things about our beloved.

            Whatever.

I pity you and whomever thinks for you.

          • What are you talking about Jack? I never said Angry hates Casey. I said what’s the point of saying he has “warts”. And you say it’s how we get better, being shown our weaknesses… Okay that can be true too, but Casey isn’t reading this. Which means people here pointing out his “warts” isn’t helping him.

That’s all I’ve ever said. It’s pointless. Bitching about Casey is pointless. The end.

          • Pretty sure Casey is reading this, explains why now (of all times) he updates Danny on injuries.

Hint: Eckert is not a lock to pitch this next series. “We’re TBA for Thursday and hoping that he’s available this weekend,” Casey said “He appears to me to look like he’s feeling good.”

            http://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/index.ssf/2016/04/pat_casey_updates_injury_statu.html#incart_river_index

And, for A@A, my devalued .02: Switch to De-Caf and don’t take things so personally. Your vibe is gonna shape that 5 week old.

  27. Gina’s report on today’s practice is up, only defensive players and coaches were available for interview.

Decoud knows the company line re: Seth, other than that, pretty meh.

He does seem high on Cory Hall, “We all love him and we’ve all gotten better since he’s been here.”

  28. Early scouting for da Beav’s first game.
Went to the Goph’s spring game decked out in orange Beaver wear. Convinced a guy I was scouting for GA. What a rube.
1st string O line looks very good run blocking. New LT looks slow in pass pro. JC guy.
    Three very good young rb’s.
Wideouts were brutal. Drops and passes bouncing off their chests. Very good TE did not play.
Depth at DT for once. None at DE.
Very young DB’s, but they seem to know how to coach em up.
Senior starter at QB DNP due to foot surgery right after the season. Backup’s were less than impressive. Go Rodents!

  29. Reading the bit on criticizing Casey ….. LOL

Coming to an OSU sports blog, dedicated to criticizing and even nitpicking any OSU athletics and moaning about criticism is like bitching about the beach cause its covered in sand.

But you dont like criticism without a solution, so here ya go! — get off the blog!

    • You’re kind of right Steve. Angry has done a good job of getting people with good info like NiceBeav associated with his blog. I really wish there was a spot where I could get the recruiting info like here, without reading the crazy stuff.

Maybe A@A will retire….. In the meantime, Angry has said I’m banned like 4 times, so I got that going for me

  30. honestly I think all of these multiple personalities are Jack. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see him arguing with himself on purpose.

  31. Angry@angry, since you’re a huge baby, I’ll give you a timeout and unban you in 1 week. Do some long, hard thinking and reassess your life.

      • Agree, and that seemed to be Andersen’s point. There is a limit to how much he can just shut up and hide from the press; he is, after all, the face of the program.

I’m not entirely sure of what to make of his remark about having had their chance to ask questions of/about Seth and his return. It may take a while for SA’s to realize that, with Andersen, you get one chance to address concerns and then must move on. It is good, however, to attempt to keep things from dragging on.

      • They have to be on the patio, then they lay on the couches, then we go to bed at night, and it’s embarrassing. I have two giant dogs laying within six inches of my face.

I fully understand the sentiment. But I judge GA (not the Vikings K) to be pretty much the exact same height as me. I have a Cali King and a wife who has not failed to kick me in the ankle every night for years.

I can guarantee he pays someone to change sheets… a lot.

My dogs sleep next to the bedroom door… or somewhere near it. They have their pecking order. They are only on the bed once in a blue moon. And that usually involves giggling and licking and things getting broken by wagging tails because rules are being broken.

Kudos to Gary the Viking for his sleep habits.

Sorry… was that a rash judgment?

    • I really like GA’s last comment about the CW game. Riley would have talked about how much heart the players showed and how that’s something they can build on. I like that GA doesn’t cherish the moral victories. A loss is a loss and he won’t settle for the identity of “almost winning the CW”.

  32. Dont y’all miss ol A@A already?? Him off there, reassessing his life…. maybe joining the French Foreign Legion (do they still have that?) … or the Peace Corps…. or the DAR…. or PETA….

    • No. I don’t. Mother nature is far too kind allowing some to roam the earth that shouldn’t. Pat Casey must have one hell of a bleachy clean asshole

      • Oh stop. Unless you guys had petty email wars with the dude, he isn’t that bad. He’s trying to say something. Instead of supporting something, he thinks first forming false positions then attacking them is a valid form of argument.

I understand how people fall through the cracks of reason. I’ve increasingly seen it in this country for decades. People see the best answer and just fill in the bubble next to it. What they should do is understand what factors make any answer valid. Bubbles are stupid.

        • Epic?

          More like puppetry.

But I get what you’re saying. That’s why I reserve the caveat of someone doing something outside the boundary of these comments as a reason to censor. But only that. And I don’t know anything besides “trying to get my attention in other ways.”

I can imagine many things. I’ve been a victim of surreptitious methods many times.

      • Good call, Angry. It’s not like the guy is offensive (unless you find their lack of debate skills offensive). He’s just got a thing for Casey and feels the need to defend him at all costs. That’s cool. I just hope he can learn that he won’t change the purpose or the nature of this blog. So he will either have to agree to disagree or eternally fight a winless battle.

        • He still hasn’t defended Casey. He’s given Casey’s resume. Even I could find that on this vast expanse of anti-social interwebs.

          The rest is crickets.

    • Agreed.

There is clarity to be gained in the face of fallacy. Underlying messages can be understood even if the messenger doesn’t know how to deliver them. Obviously, that comes from understanding the sincerity of any certain position in the first place so as to easily form the support for that issue. If you don’t know all sides of an issue, there are no sides to your issue.

  33. Not sure if any of you saw… But obviously last night was historic down here with Kobe’s last game and him going off for 60 to close out. But GP2 was on the floor at the end of the game with his dad and even dapped up Kobe before he gave his farewell speech. Hahahaha pretty cool moment for the kid.

      • I think it’s a verb, meaning “to have sex with via double anal penetration”, but I could he wrong. Maybe in this context it just means the past tense of “fist bump”

        • I think you were laughing too hard when you wrote that first sentence.

I made it a point to watch his last fourth quarter live. When my wife asked why she was being forced to watch it, I told her I would buy her a $4m ring.

I saw very little hoops in that 12 minutes.

          • Top 3 sports moment for me last night. Growing up in So Cal Kobe has been a constant for over half of my life. Seeing him go out like that was special. The fact that GP 2 was in the building was cool too.

AND there was plenty of hoops. Utah is also one of the best defensive teams in the league so to watch an old man do that to them single-handedly also adds merit.
It all depends on your frame of reference. You root for The Blazers I’m guessing? Imagine if Clyde brought you 5 titles, never went to Houston and that was his last game..or if Dame stays with the Blazers for another 15 years (wins a few titles) and that was his last game. The perspective shifts.

            https://twitter.com/Dame_Lillard/status/720627299322712066

          • I do root for the Blazers. And I can count two of those five championships as undeserved.

And I was a Kareem and Magic fan before that. I think the ’85 Lakers were the best team ever.

And yes, Utah is one of the best young D teams in the league. I know what they look like when they do so. Hayward is fun to watch when he goes off.

All in all, it is a nice way to go. But it has been all about him for several years now.

          • I’m actually sad Kobe’s gone.

With his high salary and worthless play holding the Lakers back, they might actually make some moves and get back to being good. Having the Lakers suck the last few years has been very enjoyable. #hater. Being a fan of 100% small market teams, it gives me great pleasure to see any the Large Market “Merica’s Teams” bandwagon teams struggle : Lakers, Cowboys, Knicks, Yankees…

Buh Bye Mamba: one of those players I’ve always loved to hate.

          • I imagine one of the ones jack’s referring to as undeserved would be 04′ when the officials gang raped the Jail Blazers during the epic, game 7 4th quarter meltdown. Easily one of the worst, most one sided, screw jobs in NBA history. If I have to watch the Kobe ally-op to 1 handed Shaq slam 1 more time…

          • 2004 West Finals was Lakers/T-Wolves. The series you are referring to was in 2000. As a lifelong Laker fan I for one am glad Kobe is off the books. He was/is holding back the rebuild which will take a few more years. They have some good young talent in Clarkson, Russel and Julius Randle. Need some bigs and shooters. They’ll have another high draft pick this year (top 3 protected). Byron Scott should also not be allowed to keep his job. Loved him as a player but as a coach, he sucks. These last two years have been brutal. It was nice to see Kobe go off like that in his final game but really it was a lot of points on a lot of shots. He took 50. His teammates wanted him to shoot it. I saw him when the Lakers played and beat the Blazers in OT in April 2 years ago at the Rose Garden. Was glad I did as the next game is when he blew out his Achilles tendon against Golden St 2 nights later. He was never the same after that.

        • “…“to have sex with via double anal penetration”…”

Oh thanks a lot…… Now I’m left wondering what the heck that means.

Both hands? A hand an some other appendage? Is the taint somehow involved?

          • Hahahaha D! Hate is good ! You can’t lump us in with the Knicks Cowboys etc.. We last won a chip in 2010. Once Jim Buss takes a back seat the Lakers will be back in contention. Enjoy it now!

          • Lol Jack how is a championship undeserved??

Kobe carried the Lakers through the west during the 3 peat while Shaq dominated the weak east finals

          • DVDA means four cocks and two holes. At the same time. You do the math. Sounds painful and to quote John Caparulo, “I’ve never thought to myself while having sex with a woman, ya know there’s just not enough dudes in here”

      • Missing out Angry the top half of the league is phenomenal..
Jack you’re tripping great teams never blame the refs.. They simply Overcome them

        • Golden St is better than San Antonio by a little and those two are head and shoulders better than everyone else. West finals this year will be the NBA finals.

  34. Back to Football:
Gina up with today’s practice report, first chance to talk with Andersen in a while.
In what may be a reference to Seth’s father, Andersen says, “Seth was making this decision, and I think that’s so important with young people. They get influenced. They have outside people communicate with them…” and, regarding the reaction of team captains and leaders, he says, “all thumbs up, not even one thumb kind of in the middle”

She mentions Mason Johnson at center, nothing about Uncle Leo.

    • To be fair, I think it’s totally natural for a son to listen to his father. If you have differences with the father, then say so to him. But I’ll never fault a kid for doing what his father tells him to do.

      • Agreed. It’s not the kid’s fault if their father is overbearing or has unrealistic expectations. Props to anyone who can recognize that and then evaluate outside information and advice to make their own decisions.

        • I think Andersen agrees. He said,
“when you see a kid finally make a decision on what he really thinks is right, then I’m in with it.”

  35. Final score 12-3. WSU out hits 10-8,and has one less error than Beavs, that’s not good. Still think the Cougs can pull one of these out.
