No buzz about this camp, issues at QB again, etc.
This report doesn’t help the mood. Sounds somber.
Also, this assessment by GA doesn’t make sense. The WRs are mostly all veterans who have shown they’re able to beat man coverage and make some plays (yeah, Bolden drops passes), but to act like they can’t get open is pretty ridiculous. Is GA protecting Garretson?
Anyway, watching videos the past few days and reading the papers, they make it seem like the program is a disaster. The rational side of me says:
- Year 1: Have to play with Riley’s guys.
- Year 2: Clean out Riley’s guys and bring in your own. Bad team.
- Year 3: Your own guys are young, but things begin to improve. Team might be good, might be bad but light at the end of the tunnel.
- Year 4: Good team
So I get it. But this is looking like a WSU level rebuild. I was hoping it would be more simple than that. Anyone else worried about GA’s track record with QBs? It seems like a glaring weakness, and he admits he’s not an offensive guy. First impression after reading the reports: this year could be brutal with a young defense and another iffy QB situation.

That 2 minute video interview of GA didn’t seem too out of line with what I expect right now.
Veteran receivers not getting open? No biggie at this point, it’s early and it’s a scrimmage game.
What I liked is GA prepping the team beforehand that this film will be watched very critically. I read this as meaning a message to the younger guys that NOW is when they start deciding who will be playing more with the 1st team. The vets already know they’re in if they’re not getting outplayed by the younger guys in practice.
To me, spring scrimmages are motivating events for the bubble guys to shit or get off the pot.
I’m just bummed I had to miss this event when it’s just a couple miles from my home.
this team could be 50% better than last year’s team on the basis of QB play alone (likely in my view) and still not win more than 2-3 games, such was the gap in talent evident on the field last year.
Just mumbling a bit………. I’m a bit concerned when one of the players goes to Alabama and gets serious playing time, another goes to Florida, sits out a year and is then mentioned as possibly being a starter.
These are schools who have a lot of talent and recruit well (understatement)…. It wouldn’t surprise me if they have walk-ons who are as talented as anyone on the OSU roster.
So the thing that puzzles/troubles me is did GA, DB, etc. blow it by not utilizing the talent they had and SLOWLY transition over to the schemes they want to play. I mean would it have killed them to run an offense that was more like the Riley offense the first year? Is this an indication that they are that inflexible?
To be clear about this let me say that I’m very glad GA is the head coach. Not as enthusiastic about Baldwin but am feeling more comfortable since he’s been “reassigned”.
It’s possible that some of these guys are good but had lost motivation because of the losing. It is hard for many people to remain motivated when there isn’t much progress being made (as a team) and they look around and believe that things won’t get much better. We’ll see if GA can manage this part of team psychology.
Biggest need is a top QB. Not a guy who will be serviceable but one who can lift the entire team. None on the roster right now. This means GA will have to score a major recruiting upset. Of the top 12 dual threat QBs, only 3 are uncommitted. GA has offered two but will need to beat out about 15 other schools.
The defense isn’t going to be good so the offense will need to stay on the field so the defense doesn’t get exposed too much.
Comparing this rebuild to WSU is appropriate, but I almost feel it will be even more painful. At least Leach has a consistent vision offensively that he could recruit around. It’s easier to land a top QB and WR’s when you can tell them they’ll be getting stats based on a gameplan that involves mostly passing plays.
I have no idea what to expect from Oregon State’s offense. 3 different QB’s unsuccessfully ran the team last year. WR’s couldn’t catch. 1 of about 5 RB’s had even decent stats. Tough to sell those results to incoming recruits. Add to that the changes at OC, where now we have co-OC’s with little experience running an offense (I think McGiven was OC at Utah State briefly as well as a couple of years in the big sky conference, and Woods never has been in that role)
I have no idea what to expect from Oregon State’s offense. 3 different QB’s unsuccessfully ran the team last year.
Plus is it a run, pass, or balanced offense?
It’s easy to define all the teams around the league. WSU=pass, Oregon = Run, yada yada. What is OSU?
It was like a “do whatever” offense.

I share the same concern about the WRs not getting separation against essentially a rookie secondary. Very surprising to hear this about the receiving corp.
What happens if GA doesn’t turn this around? I’m curious what the justifications will be on why he wasn’t successful. Let’s hope we don’t get to that point but I’m with you, Angry…there’s not much too much to get excited about this Spring. Not very many playmakers out there other than maybe Nall at RB.
I get the sense that many are unrealistically looking at Garrettson as a program saver. I’m not seeing anything more than a smallish, average armed, decent mid-major QB. What am I missing? The Beavs still play in the P-12, the talent gap suddenly seems huge and a little depressing.

You’re missing that that’s a massive upgrade over what we had last year.
Moran clearly looked the best of the QBs in the spring scrimmage. I don’t think he had a single bad throw, and showed nice touch. Very quick on his feet too, and showed nice poise under pressure on a couple of plays. Need to put 20 pounds on, stat. Garrettson and McMaryion looked about the same (bad, but much better than Seth this time last year). Probably don’t want to read too much into just one scrimmage though.
Bradford also looked legit. Looks ready to contribute physically and mentally. May end up starting week 1 unless the the rest of the non-Villamin receivers get their act together in a hurry.
That sure changed a lot on Saturday. Moran had some terrible throws meanwhile Garrestson looked like diet Aaaron Rodgers out there
So what are the odds Moran starts this year?
Wouldn’t that be somethin’? Not only would he have to be better than the other guys but so significantly better that it would be worth burning his redshirt despite the lack of talent around him. That would not be a good thing… unless he is the chosen one.
I might put the odds at about 1 in 10. But, that would require me to find at least 9 other equivalent situations and I don’t think I can.
Garretson may be a captain, but if Moran is clearly the best QB in practice, he has to play, right? That’s what we were told last season.
The O-line is my biggest concern regardless. We could have guys with some promise in the backfield, but there’s not much talent or experience there from what I can tell.

It’s just spring practice, so it’s probably a bit too soon to tell how bad this year will be. Once we get the rest of the talent in this fall, things will look a bit better.
I do agree this is going to be a long rebuild though.
Something not being discussed is we’re tied to a coach who runs this offensive system now (whatever it is…), because when GA leaves/retires we’re not going to want to go through another long rebuild.
What’s also possible, and scary, is fans cry for Riley to return and save the program if this continues beyond year 3.
It’s imperative GA gets a QB, and whether he does that or not will define his legacy at OSU. Moran is interesting. Don’t think he’s a program changer, though.

IMO this is huge for our offense, this year especially. Seth in the slash role could be a game changer for us.
Missing off season workouts and most of spring camp is unfortunate, though.
Anyone think GA had a change of heart and asked Seth back after seeing what the offense is doing so far?
Regardless, this significantly changes what our offense could look like this year. I also hope it shows Seth is maturing and realized he’s not going to be an NFL QB, so it makes the most sense to maximize his potential where he is.

As far as the receiver problems go, how much of them do we lay at the feet of Brennan?
Things like route running and technique is on the coaches. Execution is on the players.
Do you have some sense of which of those things the problems are?
I was just replying generally. I haven’t seen any of spring practices.
It’s like any other sport. A coach can teach a player everything there is to know, it’s up the player to put it all together.

In response to Bill above, yes someone probably believes that GA asked Seth back after seeing the O this spring. Not me though, I read it as GA responding to a request from Seth and (likely) Seth’s dad. From Gina’s piece re: young men in general and Seth specifically, GA says, “Sometimes they do not always make decisions we agree with, but these can be times of growth for the individual.” and “We have a plan that will take place over the next few months for Seth to earn his way back in the mainstream of our program. He is fully prepared to accept the responsibility and make up for the time he has missed. Spring football is in part a reward for winter conditioning, and as a result, Seth will not participate during the remaining practices.”
My bet; rather than GA looking at his situation and asking Seth back, I think Seth looked at his decision and approached GA. BWDIK

I won’t pretend to know the inner workings of the program and what is truly behind all of this regarding Seth, but it does feel like a bit of a clusterfuck from the outside, and one that could alienate some players.
Absolutely, to balance the appearances, feelings of all players, and his “my way or the highway” approach GA is gonna have to be a motivational sports psychologist of the first order.
I do note that winning covers many sins and a Slashing Seth O very well could bode well in that department.
The difference between 3 and 6 wins?…….maybe.
With the case of Seth in particular, he should probably have had SC ask the team to have him back.
Not that it would have been more than a song and dance, but it may have shown some humility and bridged the gap a bit with those affected most.

I think it’s a lot more about growing up in order to be there for a child. And most athletes recognize that in the end. But there have been some who don’t come to that conclusion.
So the important note should have clarified further with zero negative off-field issues. I would consider one of a handful of major life events as an issue… at least.

It’s an issue. And it’s a major one. Whether it’s good or bad is taken on a case by case basis. Overall, I would say it’s a good issue because these kids find structure and responsibility where they are. And when they finally realize it’s not just about them anymore, they tend to become quickly sober to reality.
It should be more noteworthy that the issue is a positive for him given its importance in his current and future life. I think it’s as good or better than a college degree, which was intimated.
STG having a kid shouldn’t be noted as an off the field issue. I’m sure MANY of us here could have easily been in the same boat at his age. The Pull out method doesn’t always work.
At any rate he is a welcome addition back. Makes the offense much more dynamic.

What’s the take on Hodgins? If he is a legit 4*, I am surprised he doesn’t list more schools,though he may just want to stay in the NW. Sounds like OSU could have a chance. Does the Baldwin connection figure strongly, or does Baldwin move on soon? Does Hodgins wonder if he’s OSU has a qb who could get him the ball at this point? Seems like Moran could be a decent selling point for the future.

I think Decoud is going to have a very good year, and Coach Hall is going to elevate the play of DBs overall.
I think it’s a legit ranking. Same size as Jordan Villamin and he’s only a junior in hs. Huge hands and wingspan and catches everything thrown in his vicinity. Doesnt play against top competition because he goes to a small private school, but he also dominates in his league.
His dad is former SL Ram James Hodgins. Super Bowl champ.
Beavs were onto him way early because Baldwin used to coach his dad at SJSU. If you asked me 6 months ago, Beavs were the standout frontrunners to land him, but I think the QB issues and Baldwin demotion have hurt our chances. Having Brennan coaching WRs is a big plus for us though.
February is so far away. He’ll get a ton more offers between now and then.

“Andersen is a defensive coach by nature, and a bit old-school in offensive philosophy. Once OSU’s second-year coach gets his talent in place, his teams will feature ball control and a sound running game.
“Depends on personnel from year to year,” he says, “but I’d say, in general, I like to be about 60 percent run, 40 percent throw. That’s a comfortable area in which to live. It could end up 70-30 (run to pass) or going a bit the other way, but we want to run the ball first.”
• Oregon State has depth and variety at running back. The starter will be 6-2, 235-pound sophomore Ryan Nall, the former Central Catholic Ram who carried 14 times for 59 yards and a TD and wore the look of a back who gets stronger as the day goes on. Andersen’s hope is to get the ball in Nall’s hands about 25 times a game — perhaps 20 runs and five receptions.
Nall won’t be an every-down guy, though. Andersen’s aim is to use three tailbacks. One of them will be Paul Lucas, the fleet 5-11, 185-pound sophomore who showed in bursts last season he could be one of the Pac-12’s best breakaway threats. Lucas is dealing with a minor hamstring injury and didn’t play in the scrimmage. He’ll play some receiver, too, and carry the ball on fly sweeps and reverse plays.
“Paul’s skills are way different than the other guys,” Andersen says. “He gives you a whole different punch where he can run more of the outside stuff. We’d like to get the ball in his hands at least 10 times a game.”
That leaves transfers Tim Cook and Kyle White — and possibly holdover junior Damien Haskins, though the latter is dealing with a serious neck issue. For now, it appears the 6-1, 235-pound Cook and the 6-foot, 190-pound White will vie for the third tailback spot.
In Oregon State’s final seven spring practice sessions — including three the week following the spring game — Nall’s workload will decrease, with Cook and White “getting every rep they can,” Andersen says. ”

Andersen’s remarks make me wonder if Seth’s return may have been facilitated by Andersen due to Andersen’s dissatisfaction with the WR play?
Read the o-live article on seth. It makes it sound like seth asked to come back, GA went to the captains and asked if it was good with the team to let him back in. I don’t see GA groveling to players at all.
Regarding the backs, in the scrimmage, they ran it a lot. Nall primarily (and he looked physical) but Cook looked the part and had some nice runs. White can’t catch and looked to be 3rd in that race.
During the drills they were running before the actual scrimmage, Bradford dropped the 2 passes I saw thrown his way (obviously he had more) like he had hands of concrete. However, during the scrimmage, he seemed to catch everything thrown his way. Seemed to have built some chemistry with Moran.
Just looking at the sidelines, they have a guy named Yancy who is so incredibly short.. .listed at 5’5″ but looked even smaller. Never saw him get in.
I don’t expect this to be the end of the Collins saga. These type of kids have a way of careening from one crisis to another. JB

I actually like that Collins is back. I was stoked with him as a WR/hybrid player and thought it was the perfect fit for his skill set. If he’s mature all the better, but I’ll believe that when I see it. Maybe all this turmoil did mature him. Maybe he’s thinking for himself instead of letting his father do his thinking for him, which would be a step toward maturity. Overall this is good news even though I didn’t like his old personality (will wait to see the new one before passing judgment).

The town of Sisters oregon, was once a small one horse town, with a great little rodeo. Taken over by the artsy crowd about 15-20 years ago. Absolute nightmare on summer weekends to drive thru or find a parking spot.
Sisters was always at least a 2 horse town! The rodeo is still one of the best every June.

I got to see Beav commit Mitch Verburg pitch last night. Not overpowering but controlled the zone well. Negatives: I saw he ate the last of some dill pickle flavored seeds so that’s a glaring off the field issue. And Casey didn’t make the LO coach restrict his pitches, so Casey is sure the blame for any arm issues in the future.
Eating the seeds is an issue. And I’ll trust your word that it was both glaring and done off the field. I don’t know why it would qualify as anything negative or positive or why anyone would care about it. But you’re you. So there’s that.

I feel like going the grad transfer route for a qb only makes sense if your team is solid too to bottom but just needs that experienced QB to take you to the next level. Like Oregon or Wisconsin with Wilson.

Agree, and that seemed to be Andersen’s point. There is a limit to how much he can just shut up and hide from the press; he is, after all, the face of the program.
I’m not entirely sure of what to make of his remark about having had their chance to ask questions of/about Seth and his return. 2004 West Finals was Lakers/T-Wolves. The series you are referring to was in 2000. As a lifelong Laker fan I for one am glad Kobe is off the books. He was/is holding back the rebuild which will take a few more years. They have some good young talent in Clarkson, Russel and Julius Randle. Need some bigs and shooters. They’ll have another high draft pick this year (top 3 protected). Byron Scott should also not be allowed to keep his job. Loved him as a player but as a coach, he sucks. These last two years have been brutal. It was nice to see Kobe go off like that in his final game but really it was a lot of points on a lot of shots. He took 50. His teammates wanted him to shoot it. I saw him when the Lakers played and beat the Blazers in OT in April 2 years ago at the Rose Garden. Was glad I did as the next game is when he blew out his Achilles tendon against Golden St 2 nights later. He was never the same after that.

To be fair, I think it’s totally natural for a son to listen to his father. If you have differences with the father, then say so to him. But I’ll never fault a kid for doing what his father tells him to do.
Agreed. It’s not the kid’s fault if their father is overbearing or has unrealistic expectations. Props to anyone who can recognize that and then evaluate outside information and advice to make their own decisions.
