Conditioning, Injury rates, and the future

261

We’ve surpassed the 250 comment threshold (and not a single Miles Davis youtube!) on the previous thread. Continued discussion of current political/gun control news can move here, and any reports on the status of ODFW and controlled hunt results is more than welcome.

But, to get back to the Beavs, a recent piece by Gina again highlights the general area of training for SA’s. While Evan Simon’s story is inspiring, it also can provide a jumping off point for a discussion of the overall state of systems used to prepare Beavs for PAC12 competition.

Does history really show that our FB team suffers more injuries than the competition? In baseball, do our pitchers actually have a higher rate of careers interrupted by TJ surgery? Are there ways to get facts to answer these questions without settling for small samples or incidental observations? Can we expect improved results from the new FB staff; and will a “return to the mean” cause Too Late Nate’s guys to be more consistent? Thoughts?

  1. Oneoldbeav’s first(2nd) post. Congrats!

Regarding pitchers, I don’t know that we have a higher rate of players with disruption due to injury and TJ, but maybe we should start looking for a few pitchers in each class who have already had TJ surgery in HS?
That’s what Oregon did with my cousin. He spent his Sr year of highschool rehabbing from TJ surgery, and his first pitching action since his Jr. year of highschool was some relief pitching for the ducks. Now he’s a starter, and hopefully that arm will stay healthy and lead him to a career after college without any further interruption.

  2. I thought we didn’t link to O-Live on this blog? Are we over that since Schnell is gone? I guess I don’t care either way just wondering. Interesting topic though. My guess is that our injury situation is never as drastically bad as everyone thinks it’s just part of being a fan. You don’t keep track of other teams’ injuries as in depth as you do you your favorite team’s

  3. Carry over from the last thread… Jack I’m surprised your response was a simple “whatever”… Does that mean you did some homework and realized you are wrong?

    • Nope.

It was the realization that I was more right than I thought I was, and that any discourse with you was meaningless regardless of context.

      • Jack, he was rated the 46th best recruit in the country, in comparison to a current player, Madrigal was rated 109th.

He was also only 1or 2 that saw the field as a true freshman in that class for Mike Riley and the football team.

Stick to what you know, like shitty music.

    • I don’t think the last thread was that disinteresting. And I don’t know if I could find ten Davis albums I deem worthy of such linkage. I think six would be the cut-off.

  4. Perhaps the injuries are more noticeable because usually the talent on the FB team is thin, thus the result of an injury to a starter is a drop off in performance at that position.

As far as baseball goes imo, Casey lets the pitch count get to high before using the hook.

    Back to prepping.

    • I’ve listened to a couple of this year’s NCAA bb tournament games and there were instances – I don’t recall names or teams – where the pitch count reached 112-113 but I didn’t hear any into the 20s. It has been my understanding that many pitchers’ arm injuries come from overdoing it in Little League.

  5. Way off topic, but who do you guys think will replace mike and mike on blazers tv?

My money is on Kevin Colabro and Brooke Olzendam, which would be fine by me, even though i’ll miss former beaver mike barrett.

( if the beavs could land barrett, i would love it)

    • I got my willamette deer tag, I point saved everything else. Wife got her first elk tag along with my dad. And dad got his antelope tag.

        • I double dip on the river. Ducks and deer, it makes for a fun day. And my best friend and my brother are farmers so I have choices. But the river is underrated, lots of big bucks of you know where to look.

          • I used to have friends/family that let me hunt their farms south of town, but they don’t allow it anymore, so I stick to Alsea/mackenzie units now.

I’m also a bow hunter, so the Mackenzie unit is a hair tag during general season for me.

    • Unsuccessful…man I’d sure love to draw the Metolius archery buck tag some day…up to 15 points but still a ways off as a non-resident.

15 points now for elk…not sure where I’ll cash those in either.

      18 points for antelope…

9 points for antlerless…If only the Umatilla tag didn’t take about 25 to draw!

      General season here I come!

      Hoping Idaho results post soon!

        • maybe? I’ve been on hunts in neighboring units (Steens Mt. and Whitehorse). Never actually hunted Trout Creek.

          • Trout Creek is usually a mulie spot. But I was talking with someone from Idaho who went beyond quad trails and found a pod of pronghorn. And maybe I just conflated that with another discussion about Jordan Valley. I think the latter had to do with bighorn.

  6. Looks like Angry was correct about Texas being interested in Casey and I was correct about him staying. Patting self on the back. They promised to build an airport next to the cow barns to boost recruiting.

    • Nobody said Texas wasn’t interested. In fact most the comments on here were about how any school would be.

Angry rumored mutual interest, which there isn’t.

      • I doubt there was any mutual interest. Casey took a call, that’s it.

Texas is just going down a list of coaches who have won national titles or have been in the CWS recently and offering a truckload of money. It doesn’t seem like any elite coaches are interested in the Texas job.

      • And to add, it clearly wasn’t anything serious because Casey didn’t ask for an extension or a raise which would be expected if he had any real interest in the Texas job.

  7. Did Oklahome State update their logo to this interlocking OS recently? Looks a lot like our old OS logo, that I though was created to differentiate from the other OSU.

    • She mentions death threats in her open letter. I don’t remember that being mentioned before. Did she ever mention who threatened her with death?

      • I believe the original story said the caller identified himself as a coach. I doubt he was anything but a GA, if that. It could have been the rapists themselves for all we know. She would know the voice if she heard it again. Banker was the DB coach at the time… meaning any GA who would have done anything (again, IF) would have likely been associated with that group.

  8. Don’t know about “extra” injuries compared to other teams, but when you take a bunch of 2 star and unranked recruits and make them play 9 games against 3,4, and 5 star recruits … our FB team definitely and consistently loses “extra” games every year. Football is a physical game. Bigger faster players can and do hurt smaller weaker players.

  9. So yay for Cleveland? Although I don’t care either way….good for Cleveland finally winning something, that poor fan base……kind of reminds me of another tortured fan base………

  10. Wait what just happened Whiskey told us so all along the lowly Cavs from the East couldn’t beat the Warriors from the mighty West?

    • and I was ridiculed for my “obvious” opinion. Which is fine. I have no dog in the fight. However Jack 69 which one is it??? Am I wrong for saying the west was/is stronger than the east? Or should you and everyone else be ridiculed too because you said “thanks, captain obvious and you were wrong as well?” I will only say this. It was pretty apparent who the NBA WANTED to win this series.

      • I’m pretty sure you can figure out who it is by looking at the avatar and the handle. Your intentional density is boring.

I think everyone but GS fans wanted Cleveland to win in the end. We had GS bench payers getting all cocky after game 4.

Curry was playing with at least one flat tire since early in the OKC series. And they still took it to the last minute against a team with LBJ doing what he is capable of doing. Critics of GS say that they were lucky to make it to the finals because they didn’t have to play SA. If that logic holds true, then Cleveland was the beneficiary because they didn’t have to face SA or OKC or a GS with the one guy who could beat them by himself. They got to play against Fiat version of Curry, not the Ferrari version.

  11. C Carolina knocks off Florida in the CWS after getting screwed out of a sure run on a replay.
They have a nice team. Hope the Gators flame out.

  12. Eggers with a great write up on next year’s baseball squad. Pomeroy and Hamilton sign as expected. Kind of think Morrison will lean to signing.

Outlook is good for next year. Essentially will have 4 proven starters (Fehmel, Rasmussen, Heimlich and Tweedt). Though 2 are coming off tommy john but depth from the incoming freshman will help a lot. Didn’t know Brosius sat out due to injury.

Even with Ice and Morrison gone, it’s a great squad. If Cary can come back and Larnach develops, it’s going to be a scary looking team. Not a lot of weakness and a lot of depth at every position. It’ll be all about developing consistency since the talent will be there.

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/311830-190200-why-pat-casey-talked-to-texas-and-why-he-chose-to-stay-at-oregon-state

    • Thanks for the link.
Classic Casey in regard to the shafting (my word) by the selection committee: “Erdmann’s statement “is a complete lie,” Casey said. ”
I believe Casey will take motivation right to the edge next season, if he doesn’t go over then he has the tools to get to Omaha.

  13. Casey came as close as he could to saying the Athletic Department didn’t do anything to lobby for the Beavs. In Eggers interview with the AD – I forget his name – he, the AD, admitted they didn’t think they needed to do anything to further the Beavs cause, but clearly they were wrong. (that was my interpretation, anyway) but he didn’t say what they planned to do in the future to break the NCAA/SEC/ESPN cartel in the selection for the baseball playoffs.

  14. And I’m delighted Casey called Erdmann a liar. I listened to the TCU/Texas tech game – and one of their announcers remarked how very wrong the selection committee got it this year.

      • Technically, I guess PC didn’t call Erdmann a liar – but said he was lying. Does that fall under any NCAA reprimands. It’s sure to get back to Erdmann. Erdmann’s comment wouldn’t have been as egregious if South Alabama hadn’t been the last selection.

    • Thing is, Erdmannn is a liar, the facts prove Casey right.
Doubt if there is much chance Casey will come face to face with Erdmann much in the future. Meggs? That’s a different story!

      • concur OOB. Next year should be epic vs. UW. I’m already thinking of signs for that series at Husky Ballpark: “Meggs on OSU: Can’t Beat em, Ban em.” Or, “Pat Casey build THIS stadium”

  15. Regarding injuries. The last few years the Gophers had a rash of injuries on the OL that reached a apex last season. What was supposed to be a deep, strength of the team, turned into a cobbled together makeshift weakness.. Many happened in the spring and fall practice before a game was played. New OC and OL coach and different plan for them. S/C coach is the same guy. Hope it works. Interview with our pleasingly plump HC last week by a 95 yo sportscaster. Not a joke.

    Sid: Pirsig hurt last year?
TC: overhauled offensive conditioning for OL. completely different training than in the past. think it will pay off – guys stay healthy and get more physical. lifting 5 times a week, but not lifting as long. lot more resistance training. designed around drive blocking. take away some of running – more conditioning through blocking movements.

    • The point of the post is that sometimes it is the luck of the draw with injuries, but if there is a trend then it is a good idea to examine your methods. Last season all the coaches at the U of M said they had the worst year with injuries that they could remember. The OL, was the outlier, with three straight years of severe attrition due to injuries. If the Beav’s have another bad year with OL injuries, should they examine their training methods? The new coach here is at least trying something, vs the “they get hit a lot and injuries happen” we heard for the past few years. Will it make a difference? Who knows.

  16. listened to the post-game Miami/UCSB interview. Miami coach admitted they hadn’t given UCSB a thought and lamented that when Miami was independent they traveled to play California schools and he missed that. Further, west coast teams play more small ball which UCSB certainly did today. Dare to hope that this year’s tournament will make the so-called power teams re-think pre-season scheduling?

  17. The Brenda Tracy story makes it into some Gopher boards and I assume it will be on most B1G boards. MR’s rep is going to take a major hit.

    • Wasn’t he going to PWO? I would assume he got a full ride offer. He seemed to have potential, it’ll be interesting to see how he pans out.

    • Pretty sure that dude was a JC guy with 2 to play 2. Showed up for the spring game, saw the job was Garretsons, and went with a smaller school where he had a scholarship offer and a better chance to play.

We still have the freshman who flipped late from Whisky.

    • The college football world has realized NU football has been irrelevant for many, many years………..now that dullard (as in Smilin’ Mike) has convinced Husker Nation their program is irrelevant too! Biley has indeed done a lot of heavy lifting in just one short year. Impressive!

  18. More on Brenda Tracy’s trip to Nebraska and her dealings with OSU as reported by ESPN; I didn’t know she had spoken to EVERY athlete at OSU last year.

Tracy, who was hired by Oregon State last year to help shape campus policy on sexual assault prevention, has worked to promote legislation nationally and in her home state. The Pac-12, at her urging, passed a rule in March that bans transfers with backgrounds that include violent crime.

Tracy’s son, Darius Adams, published a letter to the NCAA this month on Change.org, urging the organization to create policy that bans violent athletes.

Tracy, who spoke to every athlete at Oregon State last year but has never talked to a football team as a group, said she would like Riley to “step up and be a leader on this issue — and be an example to other coaches and other programs.”

  19. Hopefully coach lockette hangs around for at least a couple more years he’s been key at developing that Florida pipeline. It will be interesting to see him recruit once we start getting things going as a program.

      • Normally I’d agree with you but saw her mention she essentially wanted to be the Show instead of being a piece of the puzzle; therefore, UW wasn’t a good fit with Plum being the Show there already.

        • But if Oregon wbb already has, I’ve read, more stars than the milky way, are those players going to want to let her be the show? When I first read about the Washington possibility, I wondered if Ionescu would acknowledge Plum’s dominance. And perhaps the Washington thing wasn’t even true.

          • I’m sure her confidence is through the roof and she believes she can be the star on UO despite the other players coming in. Plum is damn good and there is no way Ionescu would come in and outperform her.

    • I found that pretty depressing in the rehashing of how bad the Beavs were last year. To say the cupboard was bare is being generous.

[edit: I’m even down voting my own post]

    • Selective memory. I had forgotten how bad it was last year. The Rodent Bowl will provide a pretty good test to see if the line play had been shored up against power running.

  20. Does Gary Andersen know we can’t field a team of only receivers and running backs? “Explosive athlete, will do well in space.” Cool well there isn’t going to be any without any lineman

    • They have 17 olinemen on the team right now. Only 5 (or 6 if anderson gets cute) can play at one time. How many do you suggest we waste scholarships on?

        • So how many olinemen do you want on scholarship A@A? Should we go back to Rileys 26+ olineman and short other positions? Sounds like a recipe for success.

          • I know that we HAVE linemen on the roster. I mean when do we start getting good linemen? There’s plenty in the state of Oregon alone yet they all go elsewhere while we stockpile skill position players from Florida

          • We have 7 olinemen that have significant playing time right now. Plus Im pretty sure we offered 4 in state olinemen scholarships but no takers yet, and we got that big German dude from Illinois who’s offers have been blowing up recently. I wouldn’t worry too much about olineman……. yet.

          • Im not necessarily confident, I just think literally every position on the team has more to be worried about, well maybe not the kickers. And I think it was last year when GA said he wanted less olinemen and more skill positions.

          • There’s 14 or 15 WR’s on the roster. Anywhere from 2-5 play.. Let’s say 3 or 4 in our offense. I’m just saying you make a comment about the ratio of lineman being wrong…. But it’s not much different than other positions

          • There are currently 19 offensive lineman on the roster, but 16/17 are on scholarship (by my best count). There are 14 wide receivers on the roster, but 9 are on scholarship. The true number comparison is the amount on scholarship. Don’t forget that wide receivers have more opportunities to contribute on special teams.

          • Well if we can’t put any linemen on the field goal, field goal block, punt return, punt, or kickoff teams… That might get ugly

          • GA stated from day 1 the roster needed to be balanced. There were way more offensive players on the roster than defensive players. D line was/is a need. 42 offensive players, 40 defensive players and 3 ST players is what GA wanted to balance it out.

Some of you are talking like this team won 10 games last year. How many 4 and 5 star quality high school players want to go to a lower tier Pac-12 program that went 2-10 and lost all of its conference games? Get over it and give GA some time. Or would you rather have Gosh golly gee whiz guy back?

        • Will he play OL? The article lists him as a DT. Always good to get in state guys though, and big ones at that. His biggest value may be keeping Morris from changing his mind. Good to see Andersen listen to me and go get some beef. Only took him 8 minutes too. Good job, coach

    • Don’t worry. Mike Riley took walk-on linemen with really really… really slow WR measurables and made them play on our O-line… with a cheeseburger or two.

And if they didn’t pan out there (or even on the scout team) and only ended up standing around doing nothing… that’s right… they were likely to be competing for a starting job as a DT very soon.

      Oh ye of little faith.

    • I agree. Very Riley-esque. Maybe these kids are tougher than the usual Riley recruits but a lot are very obviously projects just like ol times. But this is what you get until you start turning the product around on the field so it is what it is for now. You can’t expect many high profile guys to jump at the chance to join a 2-10 football team

      • You need to subtract 20 pounds, three inches and about .4 seconds on the forty from the average MR class in order for a GA class to fall to that level.

Call it how you will with stars and offers and whatever the fuck you want. We’re suddenly taller, longer, stronger and faster. And some of these pedigrees are a little more than being Snoop’s kid. There are some actual meat deals out there.

    • I wouldn’t say that. These coaches have shown to be ahead of a lot of programs on offering. Like with david morris the ducks didn’t even offer him until after he committed to the beavs. These kids haven’t even played their senior season yet so its a little early to call them turds.

  21. OT – S-I picks Payton II as one of the top 5 “sleepers” in the draft:

    “Gary Payton II

Gary Payton II can defend opposing point guards as well as any diminutive player in this draft. At 6′ 3″ with a 6′ 8″ wingspan, he can ballhawk like a demon and also switch onto bigger guards. In a league that’s never been more dominated by lead ball handlers, adding an athletic freak who can defend the opponent’s All-Star point guard is an extremely valuable asset off the bench. “The Mitten” led Oregon State in minutes, points, rebounds, assists and steals a year ago. He’s a gamer. He gambles a little too much defensively and doesn’t appear to have much room left to grow at 23. But a team that snags him in the second round will be very happy with Payton II as a reserve, as long as expectations aren’t too high and he’s allowed to compete in a reasonable role.”

    http://www.si.com/nba/2016/06/22/nba-draft-sleepers-caris-levert-gary-payton-yogi-ferrell

  22. Th recent commits are low hanging fruit type of guys. Sure some have multiple offers but none pursued by bigger schools. Pretty unimpressed.

Still need to land a big fish to attract the other big fish out there.

      • I concurr with that. Anderson appears to be ahead of the cruve in finding up and coming talent. Just ask the Ducks. They appear to offer every in state player after us thus far in the past two months.

      • I concur with that. Anderson appears to be ahead of the cruve in finding up and coming talent. Just ask the Ducks. They appear to offer every in state player after us thus far in the past two months.

      • By the time he plays (guessing he redshirts) he’ll likely be pushing 295, 300….

Maybe one of his low-hanging teammates can be plucked as well….(I set somebody up there, anyone going to take the easy shots?)

      • I wonder how much his dad paid for that puff piece.

Bowman is the definition of a low hanging fruit guy. He had one offer. And he took it immediately. If he’s as good as the article says, shouldn’t he have more offers? And how come he was only 2nd team in his league?

        Unrated on ESPN.
        2 stars on Rivals.

Looking at his film, he doesn’t exactly stand out. If you watched it without the film pointing him out, would you be able to pick him out? He’s a high 2 star/low 3 star is you consider him as a nose tackle. Not fast enough to be an end.

        • He was a junior and is a linemen which can take longer to develop the necessary strength and size. He probably wasn’t 6’5 280 last year im assuming. I would wait until he plays a few games next year to make that assessment. Not to mention he transferred which can drop players off the radar.

        • I’m afraid it’s useless Bill. So many people on here who condemned Riley for getting these type of players are back to saying stars don’t matter now that GA is head man

          • Rivals sux first of all they don’t even have a couple of our recruits ranked yet. Bowcut is a 3 star on 247 a far superior service than Machado and rivals. Stars r nice and I’d like to c some 4 stars but they don’t say everything. Im not saying these r huge signings but im also not condemning them before they play a down of football for us or even their senior year for that matter.

          • You guys are bitching about players who haven’t played their senior year of high school. You’re comparing apples to oranges.
GA is picking these guys now. Riley picked guys with these skills or less right before signing day. Big diffrence. Now if these guys don’t develop over the next 6 months then you have a problem. But at least they have a chance to get better before signing day. Riley never did.

          • You can go back and see what I said about stars and ratings and the fucking complete morons who had to pay some grifter so they could see some hack website that purports to do all of that garbage well and also give notice of commitments a half hour before everyoe else (maybe) in the pre-twitter days.

Or I may have encapsulated much of what I’ve said about the complete wastes of time and rip-offs those sites are and how mentally inferior anyone who gives them money really is in the above paragraph. And that would mean you, who apparently have not been paying attention for years like the rest of us, don’t have to go back in the archives to find such material.

          • I don’t care what grades sites give players Jacko and I never said as much. But I do look at whos offering these guys scholarships, and when I continuously see Utah St. as the next best offer after OSU, it makes me wonder. I guess I’m unique that way. These are the same guys OSU could get at the end of the recruiting cycle anyways so it bothers me when we start locking them in now. But I guess the consensus is that they’re all going to make monumental leaps in their Senior seasons. Golly I hope you guys are right.

          • Given that we would lose to Utah State in recruiting battles with the last regime, I don’t know what your complaint is.

We’re getting bigger, stronger, longer and faster athletes while competing with decent non-P5 schools in the beginning of the recruiting cycle, not the very end when only table scraps are left. The worry should be as someone above said. Are they about to blow up? Will we be able to retain them if they do? Or are they academically challenged, and GA is the only P5 coach willing to put in the work to guide someone through something that challenging?

There are worries about how the talent might be developed as well. But we’re not discussing this because some people still think a Riley who just gave up while here is a fair comparison to anyone.

I think it has to do with a fundamental change in how our AD operates. You could say it’s something of a throwback. Casey has always valued the home/region grown athletes. And for the first time I can remember, none of his class is going pro. GA is firing up a track hoe to bring in local talent. Screw this turning over rocks crap. Tinks is in Portland a lot.

The success of any of those programs in the future is due to how those programs interact in the regional community now. Casey has done very well in this regard forever. That’s why his recruiting is at the top of his game. Tinks had only a foundation set.

GA had an empty lot filled with shopping carts, burn barrels and pathetic excuses created by unimaginative minds to deal with. When you take all that garbage and burning stuff and stick it in a dumpster, what we had last year was going to happen. Now he’s digging in and doubling down on some new facilities that he most likely saw from afar as a next step for OSU. And now we have a team who is ~75% sophs or younger. This all fits with a total rebuild.

Comparing that to the ho-hum diddly-do excuse makers was just silly at first. Now it’s just stupid.

          • Seriously dudes are getting jaded on GA pretty quick damn quick.

Does anyone recall a couple years back we were the 2nd to last program to sign our first recruit? 119th out of 120.

For our entire lives OSU has been a backup plan. A 3rd or 4th option. No reason to commit early as there will always be space leading up to signing day. GA and staff look to be working their asses off to turn us into a first option for the first time.

Yes we lost a couple exciting players to academic casualty. Maybe peoples memories are shot, but we would also loose multiple players a year under Riley to academic casualty, often times the exciting ones (Lawrence Mattison, Corey Hall just to name a few recents.) We would also have a couple of our upper tier flip to other teams on signing day. That hasn’t heppened so far under GA.

Camp season is just now under way, so evaluations will start rolling in over the next couple of months. I think you’re all sour because you’re not used to seeing so many commitments this early.

Most of us with realistic expectations discussed that there are 2 main ways to rebuild: Slowly change systems over the course of a couple years. You have higher lows but the rebuild takes longer. GA chose option 2 which is rip the band aid off and let us bleed a little last year with a very low low in hopes we get back to higher highs quicker. Judgment should be reserved at min until after year 2 to see how it’s projecting.

  23. Gary Payton II went undrafted in the NBA draft tonight, and I find that absolutely maddening. Random stash players in Egypt went over him, for crying out loud. Good news, he seems like the type that will take this personally, and become a better player for it.

EDIT: Seems like the Rockets signed him to a 3 year deal. Leave it to Morey of all people to see his potential.

    http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/242380/Gary-Payton-II-Agrees-To-Three-Year-Deal-With-Rockets

  24. GP2 goes undrafted. Guess too many teams felt his jumper needs work. He will be a free agent and can sign with any team or take his talents overseas. He’ll catch on with someone as he can defend and rebound

    • Probably didn’t get drafted because he was awful at free throws and pretty bad at 3s.
He’s disruptive enough on D to get a look.

      • Got a 3 year contract with the Rockets. Unlikeable team, but at least they’re not a dumpster fire like some teams in the NBA. He’ll get a fair chance with them to show what he can do, and I hope the draft snub motivates him to work harder.

      • So basically he’s the anti-Mike Deantonni type of player. Bad team for him since they won’t play defense and the 3 will be a key piece of their offense.

      • Let’s ask Shaq, Deondre Jordan or really? Chris fucking Dudley if making free throws is a prerequisite to be successful in the NBA. And those three were just off the top of my head. I’m sure there’s plenty more who couldn’t/can’t shoot FT’s

          • Rajon Rondo laughs at your piss poor rebuttal. A career 60% FT shooter. Does he rebound or play defense?

If you want to continue the discussion with the adults I suggest you have better arguments

          • Whiskey, there are always exceptions. In general, guards make free throws and threes. In general, guys who are disruptive get a shot but have a shorter leash than guys who make free throws and threes. If Payton played for Oregon you’d see his flaws more.

For example, he also went missing from big games and/or played passively for long stretches. Missed clutch free throws, etc. I loved watching him, but objectively I can see why NBA teams don’t love him.

Hope he does well. Maybe I’ll watch the NBA for the first time since ’96 if he does.

          • Angry if you haven’t watched the NBA game in 20 years then you should not be commenting on why someone is or isn’t drafted. The game has changed. And it isn’t for the better. However, superstar rules haven’t changed one bit. So there is that. Maybe you should continue to not watch.

          • Youre right Whiskey. I’m sure all these dummy GMs haven’t watched any hoops in 20 years either. How could all of them not see that GPII has no flaws. My god man you I would say just stay inside so people didn’t find out how dumb you were but I suppose you can’t anymore in today’s Internet age :(

          • The bonus in having a job which is to just play hoops is that you can increase your efficiency from the line and beyond the arc by putting up shots… all day… during your work hours. GP2 will now have the time to do that. What can’t be taught is his drive and ambition on the D end. If he keeps that and uses his time to do his job in every facet, he will easily become a complete NBA player. He also has tremendous upside due to his athletic abilities. But he is undoubtedly a project until he can tighten his handle in traffic and his perimeter shot and freebies start going down with higher frequencies.

          • Bruce Bowen? Career 57% FT shooter. There’s plenty more of NBA guards that were poor FT shooters.

Also if you’ve been paying attention, the days of “Hack a Shaq” are coming to an end. That will be a point of contention in the offseason NBA meetings.

Gary Payton wasn’t a great FT shooting guard either. Career of 73%

          • Bruce Bowen is 6’7″. You know you can look these things up on the internet right? And to your *attempted* point about Rondo: By that logic I can say that 5″9′ players can all make it just fine in the NBA because Isaiah Thomas (Celtics version) made an all star team.

          • and not every guard is 6′-3″. Magic was 6′-9″. Ron Harper was 6′-6″. Sixers are talking about using Ben Simmons as a guard and he’s 6′-10″. Why? Because he’s a good ball handler and passer. But his shooting skills need work. If you want to say that GP2 wasn’t drafted because he’s not a good shooter that’s fine and I would agree. But to say he wasn’t drafted because he’s a poor FT shooter is not a good argument. Plenty of dudes have had pretty good careers after being drafted and were poor FT shooters. Besides, who’s going to foul someone on purpose that is not that great of a shooter to begin with?

  25. The last four teams standing in Omaha are Oklahoma St, TCU, Arizona and Coastal Carolina. Arizona and Coastal Carolina will have to beat their respective opponents twice. If I were a betting man I’d bet on TCU winning it all

  26. Home after almost a month. Cuba was fascinating, hurry and get there before Carnival Cruise Lines ruins it with a $199 two night special.

Perusing the posts….. not much going on in the slow season. NBA draft…yawn. CWS… eh. JB

  27. To the original post, we need better databases for sports. Maybe a wikipedia type database where users can enter injuries, body part, etc. Then users can query by any criteria. Then we can see if the Beav’s injuries are normal or not. My guess is the Beavs are on the upper end of normal, which can only be explained by Luck o’ the Beavs..

  28. Arizona and Coastal Carolina both stave off elimination and setup a pair of Saturday games for the right to play for the national championship.

    Zona/Ok St at noon
    CC/TCU at 5

The winners will play for all the marblers

  29. Tuned into ESPN2 to see how Arizona is representing the PAC12. Wow. Looks like they are up 4-1 on Oregon State. Or wait. Hey, that’s not quite our interlocking OS hats. I thought Nike had rebranded and rerebranded us to stand out. I don’t think there is any coincidence that Nike has Ok St looking the same as us. Nike is not our friend. Nike is intentionally mismarketing and misleading Oregon state. We MUST separate from NIKE. We need to be with a direct competitor and de-brand back to our classic original identity. Gotta get our identity.

  30. How ’bout that, Cats will play Coastal for the prize.
No SEC, ACC, Big12, S.Alabama, or Lindsay Meggs in sight!
But, sadly, no discipline in sight for Meggs or Erdmann either.

    • And no word that Ed Ray, Larry Scott, or the AD (whose name I can never recall and can’t bother to look up – perhaps it’s because in fotos and in interviews, he seem so, well, bland) are even working on a criticism.

      • Big mistake for Ed Ray or Todd not to have already made a statement. Simply reiterating Casey’s points about 1)ASU being a #2 seed, and 2)The lie (misinformed error) by Erdmann in saying the Beavs fell short against those who finished ahead of them in the PAC would show respect for Pat.

From the outside lookin’ in, it seems like Casey could take their inaction as a personal slight.

Too late now unless they at least make a serious push to change the “advisory committee” thing.
        #nomoremeggs!

        • One can hope they are waiting for when the message would hit the hardest. If they had complained early but the SEC put 4 teams in Omaha and the ACC 2, it would have fallen on even deafer ears. At least now they can point to the evidence of how poorly it was done.

          One can hope, right?

  31. Conforto finally demoted, but I don’t really get just replacing him with someone else who has no MLB experience (Brandon Nimmo). The Mets offense is a mess, they need veteran help from somewhere.not another rookie.

    • Evina Westbrook is the big target for next year. Top 5 recruit. Local product. Dad went to OSU. Brother LJ was committed to OSU at one point.

Former teammate of Katie McWilliams but also a former teammate of Ionescu.

      • Anybody with any idea as to where Marie Gulich is training/playing this summer? Ruth improved a lot during this time at OSU – we’ll see.

  32. Regarding WBB.
I was at an event at Stanford yesterday and a friend from Boise introduces me to a young lady that is a marketing director for the SJ Sharks. It turns out she had just left Oregon State, where she did all the stuff for WBB. I mentioned what a miracle worker Scott R seemed to be and she went off on what a truly great person he is. According to her he treats his players as if they were his daughters and truly cares about them getting a quality education and setting foundations for success in life. She really thinks he is awesome. Good stuff.
Speaking of awesome……..Stanford campus. Real tough sell for recruiting.
    Go Beav’s!

  33. from sbnation: http://www.sbnation.com/mlb/2016/6/27/12038820/coastal-carolina-arizona-2016-college-world-series-time-tv-schedule-online-streaming

“Pac-12 this year historically mediocre.” My new favorite word is apocryphal and it seems to me that that phrase was repeated so often, it became true. Perhaps the jaded and perhaps somewhat corrupted committee members implemented the opinion. I think they said the closeness of the standings meant the teams were bad as though it couldn’t possibly mean they were all pretty good.

    • Seems to me Pac-12 has won something like 6 of the last 9 CWS. Oregon State was superior to Arizona in 4 of the 5 main categories used by the Committee by their own words and they get a 2 seed and OSU gets the biggest shaft of the last decade.

I thibk OSU had a 20% chance or better to win the whole thing based off Pac-12 winning 2/3 of the titles since OSU’s. Next year they should do what the titles dictate and give the Pac-12 twice the teams in as the SEC or ACC. We back it up in baseball far better.

7 or 8 SEC and ACC teams to 2 or 3 Pac-12 teams like is far to common is mammoth/blue whale shit long enough to surpass the Great Wall of China and be seen & smelled from space.

      • I think you should have looked up your facts….

In the last 10 years, the PAC12 has won 4 titles. SEC 4 titles, ACC 1 title and the WAC 1 title.

Also the SEC has finished runner up 5 times. ACC 3 times. PAC12 once. BIG12 once.

This year seems to be an outlier for the SEC.

The title history does suggest that the PAC12 is under represented but that the SEC is not grossly over represented. The ACC is probably over represented.

        • Yes concur….I ran the numbers (from Wikipedia) over the last decade and found the PAC12 is short 1 to 1.6 teams per year based on percentage of committee invites to the tournament, when compared to the ACC and SEC. The PAC averages 4.92 teams per year, ACC 7.33, and SEC 7.92 — when the PAC should be getting at least 6 teams in per year. They should have dropped and ACC team this year, South Alabama, or Nebraska in favor of the Beavs. The structure of the tournament has favored SEC/ACC to advance more teams, more often when looking at travel, and regional home games – this year bucked the trend big time, and exposed the committee’s bias, and problems with the rankings system. Everyone (accept the West coast) has bought into the ESPN propaganda, and went along with it. If the PAC 12 gets another team in on average over the last 10 years, and the SEC/ACC travels just as much as the PAC, I’m convinced the PAC would have another championship, and the SEC would have one less.

          • Weren’t you just complaining that GA wasn’t getting any olinemen. Then he does and you still complain. Are you only happy when your miserable?

          • “Beavlover69 says:
            JUNE 22, 2016 AT 7:12 PM
            Rating: +1 (from 3 votes)
I know that we HAVE linemen on the roster. I mean when do we start getting good linemen? There’s plenty in the state of Oregon alone yet they all go elsewhere while we stockpile skill position players from Florida”

Since you must not have bothered to read what I said earlier, here it is again. Good lineman is what I want. Eastern Washington isn’t in any good lineman’s top 5. I’m not saying this guy isn’t good, the other 11 Pac-12 schools are the ones saying that.

    • Brock Wellsfry appears to be commentiing in the big O on his commitment to the Beavs (and on his little brother). Don’t know if I’ve ever seen this before, a check of his twitter causes me to believe the comments are legit. Any electric interweb thingy gurus out there able to confirm??

He does come across as very focused:

Thank you everyone…. I am already enrolled at W.S.U. Tri-Cities and take college courses along with high school. I Plan to come early next summer to start working with Coach Josh, and Woods. I currently work with ex-NFL OL Chad Ward on teqnique work Sunday mornings, and spend 2+ hours every a.m. in the weight room, and also am helping with the little guys football after my work outs. I Love what I see Coach A doing, and believe in a strong future for my new team, and am 110% all in. Go Beavs!

  34. Hallice Cooke (remember him???). Now transferring to his third school…………..Nevada

    http://www.mwcconnection.com/2016/5/18/11700512/nevada-lands-iowa-state-transfer-hallice-cooke

The Beavs will make a trip to Reno for a non conference game but Cooke has to sit out per NCAA transfer rules. At this rate he’ll be pushing 30 by the time he graduates…..

Scheduling news……………………….There’s some tough OOC road games in there

Oregon State’s 2016-17 schedule is near completion, with non-conference home dates with such opponents as Fresno State, Lamar and Texas-San Antonio and road games at Nevada, Tulsa, Mississippi State and North Carolina Charlotte. The Beavers will have at least one game in Portland, but the Far West Classic isn’t a sure thing, though Dec. 16 and 17 Moda Center dates are secured.

    http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/309056-187068-beavers-keys-for-year-1-without-gp2

With a team of mostly freshman and sophomores I expect the program to take a slight step backwards this year

  35. Buddy Ryan has passed away. I think he’s still the only assistant coach to be carried off the field after the superbowl. 85 bears if you don’t remember. RIP.

  36. 252 comments.

    Pumpkin time.

What do y’all think of Brock Wellsfry three stars but only four offers, none from p12.

I like his attitude and preparation.

    • Here is what Brock says about that slim offer sheet (if his comments in the big O are legitimate): “being recruited by 3 other pack 12, and a bunch of others. Some shy’ed away since O.S.U. was my first offer.” He goes on to say, ” I am now focused on one thing… I want a bowl ring with my O.S.U. team. I hope that helps you guys understand where I am coming from…..Sit the bench and hope to get a ring??? NOT HAPPENING. Go Beavs!

Silverstream has had personal knowledge of some recruits, others are great at film analysis; in this case are we really reduced to words from a commenter who claims to be Brock?….and paysite stars?
