Go Beavs!! 12 commits so far. I asked the same question, on the last thread. When was the last time we had 12 commits by the end of June? If ever?
Just to add a thought or two. OSU wants Hayes to play DB very little footage exists of him playing DB. Only film of him playing QB. Flemmings, I heard was great in the 7 on 7 pylon competition in Nevada against top tier competition. Gardner was offered after a satellite camp in Georgia. What I can say is these three have been seen onsite, before an offer was made. I am curious on how satellite camps can be helpful in seeing talent as opposed to video only. Also Wellsfry is going to a Washington camp soon. So curious if the Huskies offer him as well.
How does this compare with the rest of the conference? Only reading this blog just now.
Depends on how you want to look at the data and which site you use.
On 247, they rank OSU as currently the #6 ranked class in the conference, with Arizona, USC, UW, Colorado and UO all ahead. This is based on a composite of total commits weighted against star rating. All subjective of course, so take that ranking with a grain of salt.
Arizona and Colorado have been the surprises so far this year.

I’ve only followed recuriting since 2011. So the fact we have 12 commits in June and #6 in the Pac12 thus far is a good thing. I think Anderson and crew are really getting after it on the recurit trail. Long ways to go still.

It’s a little mixed for me. Love the fact they have so many commits, I think that is a good thing. Also, some of these kids I think will get bumps in their stars and offfers.
Most of these guys have some really good speed, hopefully they will be able to play with that speed at a high level. Some of the kids are a little undersized (not the linemen).
I am a little disheartened to see them struggle to get a high profile recruit. You see Nebraska with some 4 stars and you realize it is the school and not the staff. So, that being said you still need to hit on some of these big fish(especially QB). I think ESPN has us with two 4 stars, so the different services will rate them differently.
Overall, I think its a good start. Arizona and Colorado have done really well.
Ya i agree i want to see us land a big time recruit. I also did see the 2 4 stars on espn so its a pretty big variable with evaluations done by different sites.

I thought all were 3*… a couple 2* who were really 3* but not evaluated… a couple 3* who will blow up.
Where a couple recruits have measurables that don’t quite add up, there are “package” type motives. And they are solid football players regardless. I just don’t think they’ll be stars for anything more than three or four games in their careers, steady otherwise.
For those whose measurables look awesome but raw, I like.
One thing that i noticed is that we have the second lowest overall ratings of our recruits. So it comes down to if u believe these guys r not well known yet or just not super talented. Time will tell.
I feel like a lot of people have some crazy expectations regarding recruiting. This is the second season for this staff, and actually the first season for many of them at OSU. Last season they won 2 non-con games. That’s it. And you think a 5 star, highly recruited player is going to pass up all other offers and roll the dice with OSU??? Nobody is that good of a salesman. This staff is going to have to develop some lower star, lesser known athletes and win some games games with them before they’ll get consideration from elite athletes. That’s their challenge, they know it, and they’ve accepted it.

That’s not the bag of goods we were sold. We were told that while the on field results would not be great, we’d win in recruiting because the new coaches were much better recruiters.
Ok, so who sold you this bag of goods and did they actually tell you that this staff would recruit higher star ratings and more highly recruited players? If you are wondering if this staff is recruiting better talent than the previous staff, I think the answer is Yes from what I’ve seen, but their production on the field in the next couple of years will verify or refute this. But the point is: it takes time to build a program and reputation that can attract players who have their pick of any school.

Good point. And some of them have had us on their short list. Having that after a record of 0-9 in conference tells me this staff is doing something right when it comes to recruiting.

I think the expectations coming in were that Coach A assembled a staff that was going to be focused on recruiting better talent. When Sitake and Tuiaki left it took a stong component away from the staff. We were told from the being that they would go strong after Poly’s, since those two have left they have not had the success in that group (juding by current commits). The other thing we were told is they would emphasis local talent (NW) and we have seen that.
The current staff has been focusing in hotbeds like Florida and SoCal and down South. Where they have not had a whole lot of success is in Texas (I tink Hall and Odum do a majority of that territory). They have shown they are not above going into other states and competing for recruits. The effort seems to be there.
At the Recruiting dinner I talked with a couple of coaches and they mentioned that they will go after everybody (meaning highly coveted kids), but they are not going to spin their wheels if those kids don’t show interest. They do want kids that want to be here.
Most of the current commits seem to be coming from these satellite camps, where the coaches get to see them up front and in person and talk with the kids. The last camp they did was with Utah St so you see some of the kids with Utah St offers as well. I think these are the ones who will see their stock rise as their Senior film gets out there more.
Agree, the lack of success on the field has an impact on recruits. Which makes this year an important transition year, where Wins will be very helpful on the Trail. If the program can start getting some W’s it should translate into higher rate of success with the more highly ranked recruits.
The program could really use a good QB, and once they start winning some of those battles for the higher ranked QB’s I think that will signal a turn in their efforts.

Just curious: if you bet 50/50 on a single event, does that mean you always win? Maybe it means you win but you don’t win anything? Anyway, from what we’ve seen StG is an exciting player to watch. I hope he sticks and has success.
If you bet 50/50 you always lose. House keeps 10%, and their only goal in life is to have equal money on either side. They want 50/50 bets. This is concept so often misunderstood. Spreads, etc have no accurate reflection of probable outcomes, they represent what is required to convince a degenerate gambler that his prediction could be payable.
Technically, the house keeps at least 16%. I think 18% is allowed by law, but that’s their fudge factor for promotions and such. And 16% isn’t a hard and fast rule. It’s just where profits and taxes meet… not that they really do so other than on principled papers.
I was struck by the Collins remarks, as well. That, and not mentioning Ryan Nall were notable parts of the piece. IMHO.

I think McGiven will continue to put a lot of effort into managing StG’s mental approach. 50/50 chances of staying with the team?…….I don’t know. If McGiven gives Seth a fair number of chances for glory and can still cause him to see himself as part of a TEAM then my hats off to him (actually to both of them).
I took the comment differently about Collins. I took it as Seth missed all of spring ball and counldn’t really comment on his progression. We will see with in the fall how Seth fairs.
I took it that he is an unpredictable hot head that can can be a detriment in a team environment and is high maintenance.

Collins is low hanging fruit to talk about. Was last years starting QB and all that, and now trying to start fresh in defining the slasher role. I’m perfectly fine with Collins being talked about incessantly. What his role was is a fact, and what his role could be is intriguing. Keep the focus on him and off the rest of the developing crew is great. I don’t need to be hearing about how we will play Nall Ball all day long and pound wimpy teams like the gophers, I just need to see it actually happen.
Remember he wasn’t allowed to participate in spring drills and only decided to stay 2/3 of the way through. He’s rehabbing relationships right now. Coaches have to be hard on him just because he dissented once. There can be no dissent. This is Seth paying some of those dues he didn’t pay as a frosh.
It’s a good, healing thing.
Yeah, attitude is everything. He is going from being the star (potentially) to the chance to be an occasional star. If he stews over this, it probably wont work. If he he can accept his new role, and puts it all into his appearances, he could be a real asset. Gonna be interesting to watch.

He played in the International Bowl last year for the U18 team. I can’t think he isn’t one of those Rhodes Scholar types who knows this whole social media game and how it affects his future life within and beyond football.

I imagine AB eye rolling here, but I was delighted when GA instituted the school song singing after games – must have been horrible this past year with all the losses. So back to Conforto, I didn’t realize he got sent back to the minors. Meanwhile, peer Jake Lamb (6th round pick) is killing it. I don’t understand how Conforto can have that good a swing and approach and stink so badly. Must be mental.

He was brought up really early. Jumped from AA to the show. AND he started last year in A ball. Very few guys do that and stick. MLB pitchers found his weakness and have been exploiting it.
He hasn’t played a full season of minor league ball outside of a short season A league. The limited success he has had at the big league level is pretty good if you consider that.
Conforto really started trying to pull everything, I guess he became enamored with home runs, but he was such a pure hitter it seems odd that he fell off so badly. With Nimmo bringing energy and Ligares returning, I’m not sure where that leaves Conforto this season? I was listening to a couple of Mets talking heads and they were saying that Conforto is not “tradeable” and still in their long term plans.
Long term he’ll be good, but he might not be back ’til September barring injury. He needs to relearn how to hit into the gaps and both fields. He was so mature and good that it’s surprising he couldn’t keep that up.
He needs to learn how to hit a breaking ball and left handers. That’s something he can learn in the minors and get a lot of abs. The mets wouldn’t let him bat vs lefties and pitchers would only throw him breaking balls.

Went in to the guitar center in Keizer this afternoon to pick up some cymbal stands for my oldest son. Whilst he was looking into that I decided to go fiddle around with some guitars. I’d been wanting to play a fender telecoustic cause well, I am a fender guy. But I came across an Ibanez talman acoustic/electric and was blown away by how great it sounded and how easy it was to play. It was on sale so I had to have it. Got home and threw on a new set of strings and it sounds just as beautiful when plugged in to one of my amps. If you like the sound of the shallow body acoustic/electric, check one out. I even like it better than my ovation…………….

Didn’t you say you bought a squier and replaced the pickups and hardware? I’m kinda looking that direction for a telecaster.
Yes I bought a squier affinity telecaster for $199 and replaced the pickups with the fender N3 noiseless. The pickups cost almost as much as the guitar did. Easy swap that one can do in an evening and it sounds so much better. Eventually I’ll replace the pots, switch and jack. Mine took longer because the first set I got had a bad bridge pickup and had to be sent back. Find a set of pickups you like the sound of and make the swap. If you are decent with hand tools and a soldering gun this is an easy project
Yeah I’ve been eyeballing the classic vibe telecasters, I like the neck and they’ve got decent hardware.
