Bad Taste and Bureaucratic Blunders – General Thread

184

This will be a place holder for at least a portion of Angry’s absence.
I’ve still got a bad taste from the Beavs being left out of the NCAA baseball tourney and, it seems, some still have issues with the PAC12 TV network.
Is Larry Scott doing as well as can be expected?
Should Stansbury and, even, Ray be more visibly active in advocating for our guys and for fans of OSU? In what ways?
There is room for general stuff here too, have at it.

  1. Someone always gets screwed out of some NCAA post-season tourney. This year it was the Beavs in baseball.

    Larry Scott’s a d-bag.

Stansbury and Ray should focus on building better athletic programs that win more consistently. Winning cures all that ails.

Go W’s. Love the Durant signing. Never would have wanted to pay max money for Harrison Barnes. Can’t believe that Cuban agreed to take Bogut on, too. 2017 should be a great year for Golden State!

  2. Basketball recruiting should pick up real soon. The summer evaluation period is about to start.

Outside of Ethan Thompson, I have not heard of any players who are interested.

  3. Anyone else follow Paul Lucas on Twitter? Dude always seems to post cryptic messages that give off a generally unhappy vibe. I guess I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up leaving the program.

    • He helped get Kolby Taylor to come here as well as some other Arizona based JUCO guys, so I would think he doesn’t have transferring on his mind.

    • Bummer. So Madrigal goes to short and C boy back to second? Should have an awesome infield next year even without Trevor.

      • I really like the D with CD at 2B. I think Madrigal is a better glove, but I think CD has a calming influence on everyone including the P and KJ… and KJ seems to be more comfortable when he’s got the middle.

That being said, I think Mad is a better SS than Morrison also and was only being held back at 2B. There seemed to be some politicking instead of play this year.

    • You’re going to have to clarify that. Right now all I can imagine is that you’re looking at your brown coffee and your white milk and wondering aloud why only one of them really gets a chance to hang out with your fruit loops.

  4. Damien Haskins is medically retiring.

I had heard he was injured, but this is the first I have heard he is retiring…..

  5. I would like to know what Gary’s policy is on injuries? It sounds like if you are out more than 6 months you get your walking papers……

  6. looking at the VFC renovation, wondering why some of the lost seating wasn’t made up with seats on top of the roof? Actually, likely over it with a separate structure. It could have provided continuity with the orange row of seats mid way up the east side structure. Seems like it would have created some pretty cool seating for an end zone view. Cost is the simple and likely answer.

It’d be like sticking a pole-building roof structure over a single-wide trailer, but it could have been disguised pretty well(?).

  7. What’s the story on the men’s soccer player who died this last week. Only story I see is that he was admitted in critical condition then died. Sad deal.

  8. Dave Aranda did a clinic for Gopher coaches recently. Apparently he became pretty good friends with our Rubenesque HC during recruiting visits. More 3-4 looks? I wonder if GA and him are still on good terms? He would be a great resource to call upon.
Rodent Bowl in fifty one days.

      • I’m thinking LSU is really good this year. I pray they crush Wisconsin at Lambeau. The one time I will hope for an SEC win. Les is a perfect fit at LSU. One of the few true characters left in the game.

        • I have a felling he will crumble the last half of the season. Just a felling though……I could be wrong. He’s definitely on the hot seat.

  9. Ready for another Trifecta Tuesday with recruiting. Been a little while since a nice land. GA needs to put the pedal to the metal and surprise with some impressive results soon ala Erickson. That only happens in next couple years if some key pieces are landed. That DE out of Florida fits the bill.

  10. Did anyone see that ducks WR is going to the Olympics in the 110 hurdles? Does anyone remember playing vs or ever hearing about him? I don’t.

OK / he just happens to be at the worst school ever and looks like a member of Maroon 5 or N-SYNC / but honestly that’s pretty incredible for any college kid to qualify.

Don’t really care about Olympic sports very much but have always liked watching team USA every 4 years. Get into swimming and track & field? Only if there’s no other sports on and no more than twice a decade or so!

    • Devon Allen is a good receiver. But he’s a world class hurdler. You have to respect what he did to get to represent his country in the Olympics.

The real question is whether or not Merritt will get to travel and possibly participate. It would be sad to not give him one more Olympic game after what he’s gone through. He was so close as it was.

      • Its impressive Allen made it after a torn ACL. He is keeping both football and track options open in the future.

OT on another Duck, remember the Dion Jordan draft reach a few year’s back? Seems like he’s at risk to be cut after missing a year for violations of the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

        • Ligaments are easy. Rehab properly, and you’re as good as new… or better.

Merritt won a bronze at the worlds last year then went in a couple days later for a kidney transplant. He had been on dialysis for two years at that point. That was all ten months ago, and he’s only a couple hundredths from going to the Olympics again. Ironically, Allen might be able to medal only because Merritt won’t be there with six more weeks of training.

He’s also the reigning Olympic champion and the world-record holder for the event. And if it wasn’t for him and Eaton last summer, the Worlds would have been pretty bleak for us.

    • “Get into swimming and track & field?”

Jacob Pebley of Corvallis will be representing the USA in the 200M backstroke. Jacob graduated 4 years ago from Crescent Valley HS, and this spring from Cal. Jacob and his family live on our street, and are friends. Jacob’s a genuinely nice kid, who is getting to live his dream in Rio. Easy guy to root for (even if he is a Cal Bear). http://www.usaswimming.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabId=1453&Alias=Rainbow&Lang=en&biosid=3ab40fc3-c8a6-4b22-b13a-7cfabca04502

  11. Curious if anybody here would have interest in running the beavrecruiting twitter acct? Anybody have any candidates they’d like to suggest? It doesn’t hold my interest quite like it used to so thought I’d give someone else the opportunity to keep it running.
Otherwise, I may go into hibernation mode till the season starts.

    • The sad part is there were more than likely more than just Sandusky raping kids. Weather it was other coaches, donors or faculty members, we probably won’t know how deep it went. People like that run in groups, especially as long as he was doing it without repercussions.

On a side note, the disappearance of the DA that refused to indict Sandusky in 2004 is interesting. I wonder if he was part of a pedophile ring, or did someone previously raped by Sandusky make him dissappear?

  14. I just want to say that I have no idea how anyone lives in Wisconsin. My mosquito-eaten body looks like leprosy. Hot, muggy, Scott Walker….and they throw more blacks into jail than the entire South, is what I’m told.

      • 3 i think. That German kid Kratz, Wellsfry from Tri Cities and Mackay. I saw another site listing Mackay at 6’5″. Either way, all 3 guys are pretty big at 6’5″ or taller.

        • I live about a block from Central Catholic and see this kid all the time. I think he’s probably a legit 6’6″ but I’m not sure the 280# is accurate. Then again, I haven’t seen him in a couple months, maybe he’s packing on the weight.

    • This guy is pretty similar to Grant Enger a few years back. Good frame for a tackle. Athletic, not a plodder. Will definitely need a redshirt year to reshape his body. I’d guess he actually weighs in the 260 range.

    • He was quite vocal about players not buying into GA’s program. I wonder if his mystery illness caught up with him? Did he even play during spring ball? At least he won’t jump offsides anymore.

    • Drew Clarkson gone too. Medical retirememt. Attrition has really turned the Riley roster over quickly.
I like Clarkson though and thought he’d play an important role on the OL this year.

  15. new depth chart is out for footbal on blitzl. A few interesting things on it is that kearsley is buried at center and backup tight ends are d linemen.

          • I dont think many people have seen Elu play period. Only those who have access to practice could see that since he redshirted last year. He was supposed to play DT this year though, so listing him as an offensive player now seems like an odd fit. My guess is they might try to get Joah Robinett some reps at TE this summer as an emergency backup, but otherwise Togiai, Matagi and Quinn Smith will get the majority of the reps and Elu/Kalani will serve more as extra linemen in power run situations?
Also, am I missing something? I dont see Togiai listed anywhere on the depth chart. Seems like he would be a sure starting TE. Is he gone too? Havent seen any talk of that.

          • Nevermind, I just noticed Togiai in the next column listed as the starting H-back along with Ortiz.

Feel like Togiai is a better fit at TE with Ortiz starting as H-back, but I suppose this list is pretty fluid at this point in the Summer

          • I’m guessing situational lead-blocking TEs… under the influence of our new inside receivers coach. Can you imagine being on the other side and watching as one or both of those two line up at TE then shift to a split or wing position and proceed to stare at the place they intend to run once the ball is snapped?

          • On the subject of our inside receivers coach, is he really more of an Assistant Head Coach? On the OSU website, his profile appears next to GA’s and above the Off and Def Coordinators.

I wonder if GA made this change so McGiven does not have to be fired/take heat if our offense underperforms for a couple years..

          • I think there’s a serious effort to develop tweener talent into excellent football players who will impact the game all by themselves… and be a focus for the D on every given play because they are tweeners. That would mean that any one of them could impact the game given one mistake onany one play.

You get seven skill players. Why not make a bunch of hybrids who can slash on any given play? Some of our TEs know how to throw. Some know how to block… and play DT. Some of our inside receivers are slash to the core.

It’s actually an innovative method if implemented well. I’ve said it before. It could be a wrinkle that works on the next level as well. But there also need to be a supply of that type of talent in order to implement it on that level.

It’s also pioneering within the sport.

  16. Anybody else see the segment on Not Safe about the OSU football team rape case back in 1998? I haven’t dug for the facts but that interview with the victim is pretty damming.
I know Angry discussed it at length after Canzano’s article last year.

    • My old roommate now works on that show. He is the guy in the Ostrich costume. He posted a link to the segment on facebook but I haven’t watched it yet.

  17. GA better get our field goal kicker prepared for this. He may wilt under the intimidating gaze.
Minnesota unveils ‘Dramatic Gopher’ vs. Wisconsin « Big Ten Network
    Big Ten Network › 2013/11/25 › minnes…
Nov 25, 2013 – LostLetterman By now, you’ve probably seen one of the many “Dramatic Gopher” YouTube videos.

  18. So, either my browser is blocking content, or this site is very poorly done. I try to find the official OSU beavers athletic site, and this is what comes up:

    http://www.osubeavers.com/index.aspx

It appears largely content free other than some links to Pac-12 network content(?). Even if this is “under construction,” this seems like poor form if this first link that comes up after a search.

    • It’s your browser shitting on the new site. People on Twitter were complaining when they launched a few weeks ago. Their new vendor is doing something odd. Not sure about the fix, maybe try a different browser, or hit shift+refresh a bunch.

This is roughly what you should be seeing: http://tinyurl.com/zm9d6b4

  19. Not that it matters, but does anybody know if Smith left due to medical retirement? Or is he grad transferring somewhere like Mullaney did last year?

    • It was be awesome if he went to Nebraska, won the starting job, then cost them a couple games due to false start penalties.

  20. Ran my preseason power ratings numbers from Phil Steele’s magazine for Oregon State’s schedule. The results were not pretty. These were the results returned:

    @ Minnesota +10.5
    Idaho State -24.5
    Boise State +13.5
    @ Colorado +9
    California +8.5
    Utah +11.5
    @ Washington +25
    Washington State +10.5
    @ Stanford +24.5
    @ UCLA +20.5
    Arizona +8
    Oregon +14.5

The only game OSU is favored in is Idaho State (obviously). Everything else they are a touchdown plus underdog more in. If they go chalk this year (as they did last year), the record would be 1-11. Hopefully Andersen has some cards up his sleeve this year. I’ve been doing this exercise for 15 years and it’s generally proven to be correct a lot more than not. Hope it’s wrong this time…

    • Sounds about right. And that’s probably not taking into account the medical retirements/transfers.

      I’m thinking about three wins.

I’m really just hoping they’ll be competitive. Fewer blowouts.

      • Agree with you Bill. I am picking the Beavs to win four games this season. Vegas is at 3.5 wins for the Beavs. I want to see them be more competitive and play for all 4 quarters this year.

        • Vegas usually gets it pretty close. The run D will be critical for improvement in the win column.
Rodent Bowl will give a good idea of that. Goph’s have a couple of very good RB’s and if healthy, a pretty good O-line. Pretty basic battle of the wills football.

          • I believe he mentioned he felt the Beavers had a ceiling of five wins. He also mentioned that this year’s team would defeat last year’s by double digits. The problem is there is so much ground to make up on the rest of the conference/division that a W/L record may not really reflect improvement this year.

  21. I saw on olive Andersen said that when he got to osu no players could squat 500 lbs and said about 40-50 players can. Hopefully that will show up on the field. Especially in the trenches with the run game on both sides. I think we should see a big year out of nall.

      • Ya its very surprising. Its an encouraging sign tho that these players are getting stronger. All of these preseason polls aren’t taking into account that the players in the system will be stronger and better conditioned. I predict about 4 wins as well but wouldn’t be surprised to see more. Strength and conditioning is such a big part of football plus you add in the fact that i think were going to be doing more no huddle and hurry up and they could really surprise.

  22. Former Beaver Datrin Guyton Jr. is now with his second community college team since getting kicked out of OSU. Played for Iowa Western, now with Co-Lin Community College in Mississippi.

    • Iowa Western has some good players go through there. What a waste of talent.
Is Co-Lin is the same conference as A-Nuss Community College?

  23. Hey nicebeav any pulse on jaxson Kirkland or any of the other recruits? Anyone that you have a good feeling that they will commit to the beavs? Thx

    • Nemec up with a piece on Kirkland in the big O; indications seem to be that he will make a decision on August 14. He has a visit scheduled with Cal and is leaving open the door for his dad’s alma mater, the leg humpers.

  24. I havent been paying very close attention lately. If i had to guess on Kirkland I’d say we are over 50%. Travis Mackay committing probably helped as well as just the fact we’re close to home.

I think commit Arex Flemmings has been working on potential recruits for us which is nice to see. Hopefully he can convince Jamire Calvin to come here, but seeing things like this dont give me much hope, lol.

  25. Angry is due back in about five days, what are y’all looking forward to upon his return?……..announcement of a new soap fragrance? a new guitar practice method? beer recommendation? analysis of GA’s frequent reference to “big boy” stuff? or???

    • I’m really looking forward to naming a starting center based off of 2-3 yr old high school film, references to hospital balls, and bragging about Internet baseball championships

      • Don’t forget referencing direct quotes from the coaching staff and the depth chart movements.

        Ha. What am I saying?

Of course you would forget to take anything but your straw men into consideration for such a hypothetical.

        You’re you.

Got any 100% GUARANTEES in mind? I don’t gamble, but I would put all my holdings on the line for a prop bet against one. That would be sure money considering your past statements.

      • Seriously, I agree with A@a on one thing; the choice of a starting center is gonna be interesting and critical. With uncle Leo and Mason Johnson out, it looks like the choice will be between Demogerontas and Kearsley (I doubt the talk of Andrews moving from guard to center is realistic).

And I’ll consider angry’s or anyone else’s input on who should start. The coaching staff has been vocal about Demogerontas ability to pick up the system, they’ll have to make a decision based not only on ability but chemistry…….and that’s not easy for anyone outside (even inside) to assess.

        • The way I understand it Demo Is the starter. It sounded like he was the starter halfway through spring ball. So it seems he’s got chemistry enough to be number 1.

          • You could be right, we’ll see if he is #1 after Fall Camp. It’ll be a feather in Demo’s cap if he continues to best the more experienced Kearsley and if chemistry is good with a more healthy O-line. The injury to Kearsley may have had a lot to do with Demo being #1.

I am concerned that if things aren’t sorted out quickly the bond between QB and center will be slow to develop, that could be a big problem.

  26. Best programs the players ask the coach when do we start training when they arrive and even if they have it care far more about that then say a barber shop. They ask the coach how they can get better. They arrive 30-45 minutes early to every practice becauae they want to stand out amongst their teammates. If valls go against them they never whine or make excuses. They instead decide they will go that much harder so there is no way they don’t get the result they are going to get. They earn it every step of the way. They don’t demand it, they command it.

Living in the hard is a big part of this. You have to enjoy the privilege of working your tail off to get better and better and be thrilled about the opportunity to grow and excel every moment of every waking day.

Ask how can I be better coach, exceed what is suggested two to three fold and then more. What are you doing so noone anywhere else can do it better? What are you doing right now so noone else gets ahead at Alabama or Oregon or Ohio State. Same holds true for Andersen versus Urban Meyer and in recruiting.

Being complacent will always produce mediocrity at best. You have to relish the opportunity to go much further and decude as a team and an individual that you are going to live in the hard and do all it takes to be great and have that winner’s mentality of never letting someone else out work or out heart you.
