I’ve written about this extensively last year with regard to Seth Collins and gotten flack for it, and explanations that he’d grow into the position and become more accurate, which obviously I disagreed with. People also claimed I didn’t know what I was talking about since I wasn’t a coach, so here you go straight from a head coach.
Nothing new to me, but maybe people will take the opinion more seriously since it’s coming from an authority.
There’s a reason I always check a new QB’s completion % first and note if it’s poor.

So how do we get this point across to GA and company? How did all our current QB’s do in high school for passing %? I have also heard others say that some high school WR are crap and that can hurt a QB chances going into college.
Moran had a nice completion %. He’s the only QB they’ve recruited so far who does. He had GREAT WRs in high school.
How to get it across? I don’t know. He seems hard headed and has this idea of a qb winning with arm, mind, feet, and whatever else he says. But the QB has to be accurate.
It’s true the numbers don’t always tell a story, but when Leach says that I assume he means going to see the QB in-person not just looking at numbers. It’s probably both…looking at the numbers + scouting them in person.
Thanks Angry. I think the part about seeing them throw in person would be a part of it. I think that was the case with our new QB Willard. Curious to see how his senior year unfolds.
Yeah say GA goes in person and sees Willard is throwing every ball on the money and Joe Mason hands is dropping every ball. At that point recruit him even with the low numbers.
This is one way film is really deceptive. Another is knowing how good the opposing talent is, but a lot of times you can tell that after seeing a lot of film.
He may be right, but completion percentage doesn’t equal accuracy and accuracy does not equal high completion percentage. What would you think of a player with say 52% and 25 touchdowns and 25 interceptions? Is he never going to be accurate?
The irony of all this to me is (at least to my perception from what I read) the coaching staff did not offer Willard because said statistics. But when they saw him in person they were really impressed by his accuracy and then decided they wanted him. Then the offer came and 2 days later Willard accepted. From what I can see they are not recruiting Willard for athleticism or other reasons. He is decent athlete, but not spectacular. So to sum it up the main reason for recruiting him is accuracy, but it is based on in person evaluation and not high school statistical performance. The staff cannot comment so this is my speculation.
LOL … so, you are basically saying GA and his other recruiters dont know shit about QB’s. Passing accuracy is pretty damn basic. You really think ANY coach is deliberately recruiting QB’s who are inaccurate? Comeon….
I rather expect GA is getting who he can get, in this rebuilding stage, and given the disaster ol Biley left him, he is doing the best he can. High schools have a varied spectrum of coaches and varied quality of players.
And to say you cant increase the precision of a physical act with coaching, practice and repetition, is nonsense.
Yeah, some players were born with superior hand-eye coordination, but such can be improved. One might expect the superior ones seek out a winning program, which we aint.
And…. in 2000 Jonathan Smith won the Fiesta Bowl with a % under 50 as I recall.
Everyone has a ceiling on how well they’ll be able to perform a particular task, athletes included. No matter how much they worked at it, Shaq was never going to be a free throw expert, Ichiro was never going to hit 500 HRs, Quarterbacks and their throwing accuracy are no different. However, if in watching film of a recruit, you see things that can be improved (throwing mechanics, footwork in the pocket, decision-making on where to throw the ball) that show a player is currently performing below that peak performance, you take a chance on them. Compare Sean Canfield’s sophomore and senior seasons. Despite what you want to think, Oregon State football is never going to be able to consistently go head-to-head with the big programs and nab top tier recruits, especially after a few down years for the program. Finding talent in someone others pass over is essential for success.
I’ll give whatever coaching staff we have the benefit of the doubt, since they have more specific information on particular players. If it doesn’t work out over the next few seasons, fire them, rinse, and repeat.

Can you teach accuracy? Yes. But it takes a lot of practice and patience. It’s not something you’re born with.
These guys are young enough to change their habits, mechanics, arm strength or mindset. Whatever is the issue can be fixed. Will it be? Who knows. Takes the right coach to find the issue and correct it quickly. But if they aren’t accurate in high school, they have a lot of catching up to do.

Teaching accuracy? I sure hope it is possible to teach a center to snap the ball consistently. Hampton at the GT reports today:
“There’s great competition at that position right now,” OSU co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach T.J. Woods said. “It’s nobody’s job. It’s everybody’s job to win.”
And Yanni D is quoted as saying, “I’ve gotten more and more comfortable and the snaps are pretty much on target every time,”

Hope I am overreacting, but I can see the C-QB exchange being “pretty much” shakey at the start of the season when the most winnable games can be lost if there is a lack of performance and confidence in this area.
What’s his snap completion percentage? Shotgun percentage? At that position it should be better than 99%. Insert smiley here.
I put accuracy after only decision making for necessary QB skills. Though I think completion percentage is a bit dependent on the style of offense and the personnel. Still there is no excuse for sub 50%.

This may prove unpopular, but Jonathan Smith was OSU’s Darron Thomas. Good enough athlete, great decision maker, great game manager. Surrounded by great athletes, they just needed to distribute the ball and not lose the game for their team. Doesn’t mean anyone should be use them as a benchmark for recruiting.

The biggest news to come out of the day was the loss of some depth in the secondary. OSU lost a pair of reserves as Gabe Ovgard announced his medical retirement on Twitter due to a series of concussions and Andersen confirmed that Cyril Noland-Lewis, a senior cornerback who was a starting safety early last season, had left the team.

Not really sure I buy the playing time thing, are depth at that position is very light, he is one or two injuries (about what we had last year) from playing. Plus, there is always special teams.
I think he has graduated and really isn’t into the grind of football anymore. His heart has probably left him, and so he is ready to move on.
How does it work if Ovgard wants to continue his education at OSU?
Scholarship players who retire due to medical reasons retain their scholarship through their academic career. The scholarship doesn’t count against the 85 limit.
It’s a nice benefit to giving up their athletic career. Though some coaches are known to abuse this rule to push out players.
Pretty sure all Pac12 athletic scholarships are guaranteed 4 year, even if the player medically retires. Dont think it counts against our numbers though

I think the reason it pops more is because it matches the Pac 12 logo too. Our Pac 12 logos have really bothered me as they haven’t matched well on the jerseys with he jersey colors.

OT: Ended up watching part of a replay of the 2006 Sun Bowl versus Missouri. At the end of the game to help complete the comeback, Oregon State ran a solid two minute offense, and had the play-call in and were lined up ready to go before the clock started on each first down. Whatever happened to THAT Mike Riley? I refuse to believe that QBs during the end of his OSU tenure (namely Sean Mannion) were incapable of running a hurry-up offense respectably.
That was the best game of his second tenure that he coached. And going for the win instead of OT was nice. Maybe he left his balls in El Paso.
We went for 2 against UW a year or two later and dropped the pass and lost FWIW
People have pointed to the 2009 Civil War and Oregon State’s inability to hold that 30-21 lead as the point Mike Riley snapped and became what he is now. I don’t think it was until that failed 2-point conversion against UW in 2010 though. We started the season alright (given the tough schedule), but after that loss, things never looked like that 2006-2009 stretch again.

The second year of a major increase in the amount and number of seats requiring a donation coupled with a disappointing season last year. Home schedule is pretty lame. Sorry my Beav brethren, but this is not generating the hype like last year when we opened with #2 TCU. New Vikings Stadium opening has taken most of the headlines this year. Hard to compete in an NFL city and now we don’t have the stadium advantage.

The Northcoast section of California regularly produces D1 quarterback prospects who turn into D1 quarterbacks. I asked an independent and reliable observer about current prospects. He told me that Willard was best the prospect, head and shoulders above other Qbs. He also indicated that the Veer offense of Justin-Seina would keep Willard slightly under the radar.

The new OC at Minnesota was the college QB that kept Kurt Warner, yes that Kurt Warner, on the bench for three years at UNI. His dad was the HS coach of our QB, Mitch Leidner.
Without that character building lesson, where would Warner be today?
The story is that Jay Johnson was a better decision maker and the team kept winning, so the coach kept the kid with the better arm on the bench.

Kyle White was tied for third on the 7/12/16 depth chart at RB.
Just got a call from OSU Tickets. It’s regarding this season’s tickets, evidently due to the Gill renovations my seats will be changing.
During the conversation the fellow indicated that next year prices will be going up and a mandatory “donation” will be implemented per seat. I said that should not be because we are in a 4-year deal with season tickets – due to the Tinkle deal.
Seems like they are cutting off Tinkle’s deal after 3 years and raising seat prices along with the “donation”.
Also they have changed the Veterans game ticket deal. Last year we got 4 free tickets for the veterans game. Beginning this year the veteran gets 1 free ticket and any more are paid for. I’m not saying that in not fair it’s just something that is a major change and has not been announced.
This may be my last season as a ticket holder…

Riley had so little talent on the roster; seeing somebody this big and this (potentially) talented on the D line is welcome news. I will actually watch the D instead of look away, even knowing that the unit has a long way to go….
