I’m optimistic about the odds of having a good ground game this year.
This is how I see it shaking out:
1a – Nall
1b – Pierce
2 a – Cook
2 b – Lucas (primarily at WR, but he’ll be back there some to give the pure speed threat).
So that’s a nice mix. Nall has speed and power. Pierce has speed, power, and some shiftiness, and Cook sounds like a solid all around back. I haven’t seen any Cook film, but at 6’1 and 233 he has size to be a goal line back. He used to play LB, so again, this cements the idea he could be a short yardage/goal line back to spell Nall.
I haven’t kept up with the movement/injuries on the line. Lauina is a dog and needs to be replaced, if he hasn’t already. I’m hoping Kearsley can get healthy and replace him, but so far no such talk. Blake Brandel is a young OL who I like a lot. I think he will replace Harlow. Give me some ideas who can replace Lauina as an upgrade? Are Clarkson and Delp healthy? I’d take a gamble on either over Lauina. He’s so bad.
Anyway, if the Beavs can assemble a decent line out of these guys, the run game could be surprisingly nice. With all the questions surrounding the QB situation, that will matter less if these guys produce up to their potential.
Clarkson medically reitred while you were away in July

Missed that or forgot. Thanks.
Haven’t heard much about how Seumalo is doing either…. Weird
Translation: “I need attention that my sock puppet collection just isn’t giving me.”
Solution: “light a candle and fuck that puppet.”
I mean… You are running a Beaver Blog, and claim to be more intelligent than most… You yourself mentioned your IQ more than once recently… It’s been mentioned on your own blog that Clarkson retired.
Yeah because on IQ tests they ask if Clarkson retired.
That’s what IQ tests are for..know the trivial, extract them to hypothetical conclusions, and defend your position on your presented “facts”.
I’ve also played the National Merit game brother…but the Government swore me to secrecy after my IQ was predestined to greatness. (Sorry, got a bit Trumpian there)
You both have small penii.
Get over it… in the metaphorical sense… because it’s easy in the physical sense.
Point of contention:
1. That’s one pathetic sock.
2. Pathetic or not, I think we’re talking buoyancy here.
4. Wha wha wha wha shang a dang dang dang
Clarkson recently retired (medical-related to his cancer). The right decision for him, but a major disappointment for the OL, IMHO.
Regarding Delp, he is getting reps as a backup Center (Andrews is also considered a possible C). Which brings me to a pet peeve…….while ALL the QB’s have had their off days, the C-QB exchange has to be very close to perfect; this team cannot overcome unforced errors.
FWIW, coach Woods today, “reiterated that snaps have improved from the whole group since a bumpy start to camp.”
I thought Clarkson retired. As far as Lauina i feel i have to trust the coaches that are more familiar at this point but maybe delp or kearsley could be better.
Anyone else concerned with the fact that the backups seem to be throwing interceptions on the regular? Winning the turnover battle is going to be very important if they’re going to have any success this year. This team is simply not good enough to overcome a bunch of turnovers.
OT- for anybody who gives a shit about track and field. Gresham native Ryan Crouser just won gold in the shot put with an Olympic record throw of 22.52 meters. That’s 73′ 10.5″ for those that don’t know metric conversion. Congrats to Ryan.
I think it’ll be Nall and Cook with Pierce/Lucas/Collins as the change of pace or fly sweep guys.
Isn’t Bolden the fly sweep guy? Not that I dont see them using Lucas/Collins in that role.
I’m actually pretty excited to see what this offense can do. They always looked good on those scripted opening drives last year, but just seemed the script was far too short to be sustained for a game, and then the wheels would fall off. Maybe a year in the system will help to get the offense clicking?
Although, lack of OL depth will likely hurt us late in the game
I like the skill guys but OL depth is likely to hurt this team throughout most games and, especially, as the season wears on. That bye in week two is not gonna help this problem, although it may be beneficial in other aspects.
I still think 6 wins is possible but that will not be the result of a rock solid, consistent OL.
The Ducks were able to find a lot of success in simply reading the unblocked D-lineman. Was a fundamental to the success of the chip kelly system. Essentially made for an additional OLineman by the system, intentionally leaving a guy unblocked. In other words, creatively using what we have is what my level of expectations are for this season.
Beav’s ran a version of that system last year where they left all of the D line unblocked.
I’d love to see some crossing missdirection or double motion with Lucas and Collins into an option for multi-back Collins who could run or throw with the open field caused by the speedy mis direction. Especially easy to open lanes if run to an area where Bolden vacates from, and having Nall in the middle keeps for a very balanced and difficult to defend field spread.
I could see a lot of blown coverages or defenders just sitting on their heels confused if executed well.
Any word on christian wallace? Or is it a lost cause at this point?
If you follow him on twitter, you’ll see that he doesnt exactly seem super stable right now. Not sure if it’s lady trouble or what, but yesterday he had some strange periscope video where he seemed just depressed and a little out of it, while hanging out by himself. If you ask me, he doesnt appear anywhere close to joining the team this year
I’m wondering if it might behoove Wallace to do less “periscoping” and more studying?
I don’t have a twitter, but I have seen his. Mckalk is right he might want to study more and post dumb retweets less.

Don’t forget 1-11.
That’s just mean :)
Why is a Georgia fan acting like a Duck?
You’re obviously here (it is spelled “here” btw) so what does that say about you?
I feel bad not explaining this further:
So, in the English language, if you want to say that you, or someone else is someplace, then you want to use the spelling “here.” If you want to communicate the audible recognition of sound or an idea, then you can use “hear.”
For example: “Did you hear that the poster DPP needs to justify his low self-esteem, and lack of a life by posting on rival message boards?”
“I am here, confirming that DPP is a loser.”
Rodent Bowl developments. Bad news from Minneapolis.
Gopher LB coach, Mike Sherels, has missed all of the fall camp after being hospitalized following a medical procedure. Absolutely no news for almost two weeks after some cryptic tweets asking for prayers. Young guy who was a former walk on who became a two time team captain. His younger brother has been the Vikings punt returner and back up CB for the last five years.

Pretty much.
“Told ya so.” Jack Del Rio
The proof won’t come til we see how Florida does. Though I do think GA should have done more to cater a system to the players he had rather than try to make Riley’s guys fit into a system that doesn’t maximize their talent. Then again would 1 or 2 more wins last year have mattered?
He will transfer after the first benching.
It was a system fit. The system GA runs, Del Rio couldn’t do everything the staff wanted.
GA is going with the my way or the highway approach. Basically thrown everyone off the bus who didn’t fit and replacing them with the guys he wants. It’s just the way he does it. It can work in the right environment. A business like approach vs the family approach.
” I agree…Jack. Damn coaches are stubborn won’t listen to reason.” Wills’s Dad
A non adaptive coach will never get the most from his team in my opinion. It’s the greatest worry I have for GA in terms of his success here. I’ve noticed he’s brought a couple of Urban’s team building strategies this year. Sadly he’s skipped over the idea of adjusting to the players you have.
Two of the best current coaches, Urban and Saban, adapt every year to the players they have as well as to the change of the game. I believe Saban’s best move in the past 5 years was to bring in Lane Kiffin and this is indicative of that mindset.
http://coachingsearch.com/article?a=Urban-Meyer-If-a-talented-player-doesnt-fit-your-system-change-your-system
>Two of the best current coaches, Urban and Saban, adapt every year to the players they have as well as to the change of the game.
That’s true, but Alabama and Ohio State have fantastic talent. Those coaches are looking to take A level talent and get it to A+ level.
We’re trying to use smoke and mirrors, position changes, innovative strategy, a solid system and more to get C- level talent up to the (hopefully) B+/A- range. Frankly, it’s what Oregon does, or at least did with Chip Kelly as head coach.
If you don’t have A level talent, you need a system to help elevate what you do have.
I think it’s a reasonable strategy.
Good point on the talent. GA yanked off the bandaid rather than teasing it off gently.
Probably decided to do it after coming to the realization of what a lack of talent Opie left him. They were going to suck no matter what system they ran. Might as well build what you really want.
Taking swift action on Baldwin is a good sign, I believe. Corrected a mistake decisively. Next year we will see if he made the proper move.
BTW, Urban also changed his offensive staff assignments after last season. OC/OL coach is now OC/TE coach and will assume full play calling duties. Hired a new OL coach and essentially demoted the Co-OC/ QB coach, Tim Beck, by taking away play calling responsibilities.
Last years strategy was not innovative by any means. If anything it was gimmicky.
Yes, I agree on the talent level part. That’s pretty much exactly what I’m saying. Look at Urban’s success at Utah. Clearly he didn’t have the talent level he does now, yet because he employed the same philosophy he does now, he was successful. The level of talent raises the ceiling. The system can raise the floor significantly. The point is to raise the floor as much as possible with the current players you have.
I think you missed my point about being adaptive. Being adaptive would have been to take a guy who was probably the best overall QB in camp last year (Del Rio), and changing your system to fit his skill set. You wouldn’t change your system drastically, that would obviously create issues. Rather, you’d change it just enough to maximize the potential of your best players.
FYI: Urban had NFL Qb Alex Smith those 2 years at Utah, and GA on his staff for what matters. Also played in a small conference where you only had to play 1-2 difficult games a year = Boise State model for success.
And Saban has flamed out at other locations.
You might have picked 2 of the worst examples possible. Those dudes coach at Top 5 programs in the history of college football. There is no basis for compassion with the situation GA walked into.
Told me what?
That an axe in a locker room isn’t a good idea?
it depends on the type of axe I’d guess
Personally I would love to have an axe in the locker room.
I guarantee it will find the foot of one of two personnel who rely on a foot… in a game called football.
Have you considered that when GA was putting his staff together, he brought on a guy (Baldwin) coming off a very successful season at Colorado State. Who knew that Baldwin was just taking orders from McElwain (lol)? Is it possible that GA gave Baldwin the parameters or his vision, and then keys to the offense as well? GA is a Defense guy and trained in the 21st Century of American Style Leadership. Delegate,Delegate, Delegate. At Colorado State, Baldwin fell in love with Collins (was rejected by Collins) and so when he came to Oregon State, the love affair made Del Rio a casualty because it implied a promise to someone else. GA learned his lesson. He now coaches something himself, and has his thumb on the pulse of the offense with two separate O coordinators reporting to him.
“Who knew that Baldwin was just taking orders from McElwain (lol)?”
Right, because McElwain’s Florida Gators were an offensive juggernaut last year… /s
They won the SEC East on defense and defense alone.
They won the SEC?
Does anyone here care?
I thought Bama won. Silly me,
Did Scotty edit his post? It now clearly reads “SEC East.” Bama plays in the west division.
No, it always said SEC East. Reading clearly isn’t Jack’s strong point.
Aaaand I still don’t care.
You cared enough to respond at least twice
So why is the 1st Beavers’ football game only on the Big 10 (12) net
Off to a bar I go I guess……
or maybe a viewing party at the stadium on the new cement deck that was the family section.
Heck, WSU is selling beer in the whole stadium now, I hear.
Because da Beav’s were one of the worst teams in the country last year and the the Gophers took a step back. Last year the opener against TCU was the national ESPN game.
Hello Beavers,
Been a while since we last locked horns on the field. Curious to this game? We have what looks like a strong team this year but wondering about how you guys feel about your team? From this post it looks like many of you are expecting a emphasis on the run this year? Also who or what group do you expect to be the strength of your defense this year?
Thanks for any feedback you have
,Big Fred
Could go either way….the beavers are rebuilding. We don’t even know what they will look like yet. In 12 days we will have a better idea.
Yeah it’s really hard to say at this point. GA only gives the press 30 minutes at the end of practice so there’s not much to go on.
How has the post Peterson era looked so far for you guys?
Right now, IMO, it’s not looking very good for this year. Thin on talent at a lot of positions and injury ridden. Unproven QB and the OCs and DC are new so we don’t have a clue as to how they’ll do with the players they have. If the QB goes down we’re screwed.
I’m not expecting much more than what we saw last year and am hoping the team will at least put on a reasonable performance in most games which hopefully will help recruiting future classes.
Right now I’m thinking it will be at least 2 more years before the team is competitive.
BWDIK
That sage (?) Jon Wilner doesn’t directly respond to your questions, Big Fred. But, he has the Beavs losing to Boise.
He has them beating only Idaho and Arizona based on lack of quality depth, doubts about Garretson, and the problems created by having to play 11 weeks in a row.
His opinion of Andersen’s job security?…….“Better now than it will be at Thanksgiving”
He is your neighbor, angry, whaddya think of his analysis?
Wilner is a lackey. He’ll just parrot the common cursory thought without digging in deep.
Exactly! Didn’t even give a nod to skill players or the effect of being the second season of a new system on both sides of the ball.

Here is Wilner’s game by game predictions:

His thought on the Rodent Bowl opener is similar to how I feel.
“Almost took OSU to beat Minnesota in the opener, and then I thought better.”
I got OSU at 3 wins this year. He is correct in that it will not feel very good come Thanksgiving. GA needs to start coming up with conference wins. That is the same standard at any P5 program if you are going to be playing big time football.
This is the last pass year I give him. By Year 3 I want to see 6 wins & a bowl.

Don’t forget Erickson won a BCS Bowl in his 2nd year at OSU. Had there been an 8 Team Playoff they would have likely played VT in the National Championship and maybe won it all. There was an OK stable but another big part was a few key transfers like Ocho and at DE if I recall. That was the best OSU Defense ever and Ocho/Housh/Smith were great together.
By Year 2 you have the ability to bring in some high quality transfers if talented players believe in your system and ability to win games. GA needs to start proving his hunger to win ASAP. Need to see strong evidence this year that he and the team are giving it everything they’ve got if we are to feel good about the direction of OSU Football and a return to regular bowl appearances.
Erickson had the benefit of a program on the rise, with Riley on the rise as a coach. He had a solid program to work with. No comparison for GA, inheriting a program in the dumper. So your year 2 analysis is bull. Prove a hunger to win….lol. You gotta be kidding. With no talent on hand, you cant just bring a couple transfer stars and win. The rebuild is going to take time, face it.
Rileys 98′ team was on the rise and getting better, but solid is kind of pushing it. Remember they still had a losing season that year. Key elements were in place, but it took better recruiting and some jc players to bring it together. But you are right Erickson was in a way better place than GA.
And to add, I almost think Rileys first year was in a better place with Pettibones recruits than GAs with Rileys also.
Thank you for acknowledging my coaching expertise. I had them all set for the 98 Rose Bowl. Oh well your loss. err losses, ha-ha.
Autographed picture on it’s way to you!
PS: There is a small $75 shipping and handling charge.
Don’t forget the state of the PAC-10 at the time. I don’t think it was a strong, top to bottom as it is now. But like they say, “when there is no cupcake on your schedule, you’re the cupcake.”
What we need on the OL is some healh. I think all the starters(even with Harlow redshirt) would be fairly good. Andrews and Stanton on the right side looks excellent. Brandel young but looks like a stud. IF Yanni can be good at Center I like the line, especially if they stay healthy the whole season. Depth is not strong.
Is this just non sensicle rhetoric? Isn’t this what the TE position is supposed to be?
“McGiven on the potential of tight end Noah Togiai: “He can obviously be a big-time mismatch problem for defenses, depending on how they want to handle him if it’s with a linebacker or if it’s with a safety. You’ve got a big, athletic body and, to me, he’s a guy that defenses are gonna have to focus on. But the other thing that Noah gives us is really the versatility in our run game”
If it’s what the Tight End is supposed to be, then it would be sensicle rhetoric.
Have any of you seen this? The first couple minutes is hilarious.
