The story lines this week are pretty bleak:
- Will Gary Andersen get his first win in over a year?
- Will Gary Andersen buck the Riley trend of losing to an inferior team?
Yes and yes. We’re going to turn those spuds into potato salad!
The intrigue is watching the young players develop, if Wallace sees the field, etc. It will also be interesting to see if Bolden gets benched. I’m not sure the Beavs are good enough that this is a guaranteed win, but you have to think they should and will win this game.
35-21, Mammoths.
I think the Beavs continue to get the shaft each year compared to other programs. For example, UW has 3 straight home games to start the season (all cupcakes) while Oregon starts the year with 2 straight cupcakes at home. This is a huge advantage for these teams as it allows them to really fine tune both the offense and defense. Compare this to OSU is already young then we go out on the road (Midwest) for what I call a real matchup. Then, they are forced to wait 2 weeks until the next game. I realize these games are scheduled well in advance and not sure if UW or UO had teams cancel games on them forcing them to schedule a lesser opponent but nonetheless.
I’d love to see OSU put up more than 40 points. I think the Civil War was a 40+ point performance but prior to that, it’s been tough sledding in the point department. DG definately helps us going forward and Idaho State should be an easy win. Of course, Sac State was also supposed to be a pushover then again that was probably a Riley issue in that he never allowed his players to play at full speed in practice.

We should be scheduling progressively difficult games. Open with a D2 team, play someone like Idaho State or San Diego state Week 2, then maybe a Boise State type week 3. That might even be too difficult a schedule, tbh, since there’s no reward for playing those games.

They aren’t a bad team. They will be playing boise for the MWC championship this year. No I’m not scared to play them but they are far from the “cupcake” teams you want to play every year.

I don’t really want all cupcakes. It should be progressively more challenging. As I said, open with a cupcake/D2, then a non-power 5 D1 team, then a Boise type team. That’s a nice mix of padding your wins while building up your teams confidence/preparation for conference play.
I’m going to predict a big win for us this weekend. I think the team is hungry and wants to show they can play. Beavs 46-6. Go Beavs!

Beavs will wear at least one new helmet design this year honoring the ’42 Rose Bowl Champions who beat Oregon days before Pearl Harbor. Sounda fine but my preference is to see Collins, Wallace & crew in the ‘battle’ beaver helmet rumored a couple of years ago.

The real news this week is that GA finally has the two guys on campus that he needs the most. The previous administration would never have gotten these guys to Corvallis. The value? Credibility in the high school coaching fraternity. Now high school coaches will not fear contacting OSU about their borderline qualifiers. This is modest but real turning point for the program.
Garretson will improve (he just missed a few long passes at Minny), and lead this team to more than 35 points. Things I’m hoping to see:
Villamin, looking like a big tall, PAC WR – oh wait he is – and dominating a smaller school like he should;
Nall to be running like he did in the CW and then sitting after halftime;
Young defensive players getting in the backfield, making plays, and gaining confidence as individuals and a unit;
At least on INT by an OSU DB;
Collins will have several big gainers, a few scores;
I also expect Bolden to start and get targeted many times. I don’t like this, but this staff, like the last one, seems enamored with him, and I think they’ll try to build his confidence back up.

I too, am afraid Bolden will get several chances this week. He has established such an up/down pattern that it is hard to believe he’ll change. Still possible.
Will Nall return to form? That is a big question for me.
Another big question: What is gonna happen at Center? Yanni is supposed to be pretty smart and a hard worker, maybe we’ll see a lot of improvement. A chance for him to develop is one of the few positives of such an early bye week, IMHO.
BTW, anyone heard anything about Kearsley? He was a likely replacement if Yanni cannot make the grade.
Kearsley is working on his conditioning and getting into shape. So maybe the bye week helped him to pass up Yanni? We will see. Does Kearsley play any other position on the O-line?
Bolden should be a gadget player like Tavon Austin. Give him a couple fly sweeps, maybe get him the ball in the flats a couple times, try for a couple long balls, then get him out of the game. He should be on the field less than half the snaps.

Who here is going to be trying out the terrace this Saturday?
I was debating with my dad as to whether the Terrace is the entire North end zone or if it’s just inside the VFC? Meaning, can one walk around the entire inside of the stadium, or do you need a pass to even step foot onto the North end zone to get to the food carts? I’m still confused about this and I’m sure I’m not the only one?
if you have a seat in the section on the field side of the terrace, you get in permanently. You can buy a pass to the terrace itself (but not a seat); and/or a few of them are distributed randomly to the balance of the fan base. After the third quarter, the terrace is open to everyone because it becomes an exit to the west side of the stadium so you don’t have to wait for the visiting team to trudge to Gill.
The concept of the terrace is awful. Who wants to pay extra to stand out in the rain and cold with a terrible view of the field just to get a gourmet hot dog? I hope that most of the money spent went into upgrades inside the building. You won’t catch me out there even if they are serving Local Boys Huli Huli chicken.

Half of the stadium seating is not covered. You want to be closer to the field anywhere in the stadium you’ll be exposed. It’s part of going to a live sporting event. But I would rather be on the terrace and able to walk around than to be sandwiched between people taking way more than thier share of 3D space.
I see very much like the “Bullpen” at Safeco Field. It’s located out behind centerfield wall. It’s very social out there, people not really watching every pitch rather having a drinks and talking with each other. I think it will appeal to some folks who are not necessarily rabid football fans but prefer the tailgate atomsphere. It’s a good attempt to bring in those who stay in the Parking lot into the game. We shall see how it works.
Ok, so what you’re saying is this: you can’t walk around the entire stadium at halftime(which a lot of people were complaining about) but the north end zone has now become an exclusive area where it’s a Loge/Club level and you have to have a pass to be able to get over the foot bridges they built. After 3rd quarter you can walk around if you need to stretch your legs then?
If Minnesota can put up 50+ points and hold them to a TD. I’m thinking our defense will hold them to at least 2 TD’s and we’ll score above 45 points. This will be a good fine tune game after having 2 weeks to work on the 15% that Clune didn’t like about the offense. Unlike others on this blog, I didn’t like this schedule to start the year either, but after the Minny game, I liked that we went on a BYE week to heal and settle down from the close loss. You make it seem like we were blown out like we were against Penn St. etc. I like that we aren’t playing Boise St. this week, but Idaho St. and Boise St. next week.

How Nebraska beats you: Run, run, run. The Huskers’ offense has flashed quite a bit of versatility these first two weeks, running on 80 percent of their plays in Week 1 and then throwing for 412 yards in Week 2. But, against the Ducks and their so-so front seven, the key is going to be to keep that run game going a la Stanford in 2012 and 2013. That’s really when Nebraska has been at its best. Since Riley took over, when Nebraska runs for more than 200 yards, it’s an undefeated 5-0. When it runs for 170 yards or less? Try 1-5. Riley’s crew can control the tempo against Oregon by establishing the run game, much like they did against UCLA in the Foster Farms Bowl, and it’ll be hard to top them.

No kidding, it felt like 80% pass plays when he was here with some runs sprinkled in for shits and giggles.
Mannion was a good QB, but Riley became enamored with his arm to the detriment of actually playing winning football. Many people forget Mannion had a losing record at OSU.
Having a weaker passer at Nebby might actually help the poor bastards.
Hoke is smart enough to stack the box. My guess is hole will be able to score vs hand jive, they’ll load the box up and make them pass a bit, get and interception and get out ahead by a couple scores then Simple Jack and the Flying Kidney will revert to their pass happy ways. And that will be that.

Obviously we will/should win the game, but these are both teams that lack confidence.
I think OSU has much more reason to be confident after its showing against Minnesota on the road. I am a little surprised that ISU appears so lacking in confidence about this opportunity given OSU’s recent and poor record, but the “hear we go again, just like last year” sentiment they seem to express in the articles – if accurate – could demoralize them by the 2nd quarter.

OT: Ethan Thompson and his AAU teammate Christian Negron are set to OV this weekend. Anyone with any insight into Negron? What are our chances? ESPN has him as a 4 star 80 grade player.
Negron is a classic tweener. Good size for a forward in HS but a little bit short in college. Good athleticism.
Good ball handler for his size. Not much of an outside shot. This is the issue for him. In college, he’s not going to be able to penetrate like he does in high school. If he develops some kind of outside game he’s going to be great. Otherwise, he’s Jarmal Reid.
He’s a legit D1 prospect but doesn’t have a real position yet. Would be a good pickup because of his upside.
I would say he’s more of a classic 4. He has a nice shot out to 15-18 feet. And his form is good enough that he can grow into a stretch. But he does most of his damage by getting position and finishing with either hand. His size, agility and handle would allow him to form a mid-range turnaround, much like Barkley had to do back in the day. He already has that shot turning either way, so it would just take reps to make it a weapon.
I appreciate the insight from you two. You both know much more about hoops than I do and from what you’ve said, I hope we can land this kid. Knowing what I do about Tinkle’s recruiting style, an offer is a big thing so getting a kid with an offer to campus is very big. Let’s hope they can close the deal!

There is a Free week trial going on right now. So anyone can watch this week for free. I’m into them for $25 a month and likely will cancel after football season. I just couldn’t bear to listen to Mike Parker again. Seems like a good service so far. Pac 12 isn’t listed but trust me it’s there with the sports extra package, I just watched the 2000 civil war.

Don’t you expect the team broadcast to be somewhat homerish? I mean maybe not you, but most people. I know if I’m tuning in an opponent’s station/broadcast team I’ll expect to hear their homerisms.
I don’t know…where I grew up the announcers weren’t homers. I guess I got used to that.
Personally I like objective broadcasts. To me Ted Robinson is the best at it right now on the Pac network.
He’s really good. He just tells the game as it is.
I like Jim Wilson better than Parker on the Beavs baseball broadcasts, too. He’s pretty objective.

I guess in today’s landscape, it’s just not that unusual. Ever watch NFL preseason games? Blech, mostly all done with the local market’s broadcasters and those are truly ‘unlistenable.’
As for Mike, he is at least knowledgeable– about the sports he covers, as well as the opposing teams– even if he can be a debbie downer and does lose all objectivity from time to time. Well those things plus his sidebars and minutiae filled stories/anecdotes. But other than that…

Not only is Jim Wilson objective, he is much more knowledgeable in both FB and baseball than Parker.

He was hungry and wanted the flag as a snack. You misunderstood his intentions.
My feelings exactly BB. He will rant about the officiating. He yelled at an umpire after he threw Casey out of the game. His first job is to describe the events, scene, and atomsphere of the game. The last thing he should do is attack officials or get on opposing players. Then he will apologize for his actions with a tongue in his cheek. What is worse is the media will praise him for his “passion” which just gives him a pass. It just seems like he is over-the-top trying to prove he isn’ t a ‘uck.
Aune was by far the best announcer.
I remember Aune calling games when I was a kid on the AM radio. I can’t remember any specific games only the voice……….fond memories.
And not to bag too much on Parker but him on the joe beaver show is almost unlistenable. I want to hear about beaver sports, not Batty McStolenbase’s midseason stats as a DH for the 1972 Chicago Cubs. It’s fucking endless with him. Every. Single. Time. I turn that show on he’s spouting off about nonsense most of the 13 listeners don’t give a shit about.
Probably the best reason to listen to the Joe Beaver show is to catch comments by Tumwater Dave. Even over the radio, you can sometimes see Parker cringe as Dave lays out a logical, factual argument.
Scotty and starcraft have had some good input there as well, but Dave takes the prize.
logical, factual arguments tend to get cut off and they move on. I don’t listen to the show anymore.
My observation has been that Parker lets Dave complete his thoughts, I believe that is partially due to Parker’s respect for a well spoken caller outweighing his fear of being made to look foolish (or at least off base).
If you want to gripe about the Joe Beav show, how about Parker’s sidekick who incessantly explains the technical difficulties involved in putting on the show.
You should hear that guy call high school games, holy cow is it bad. I’ve heard high school kids call better games. He’ll that “boom goes the dynamite” kid is better.

Tumwater Dave is a middle aged idiot that became a self proclaimed fan of the beavs beginning in 99. He is as laughable as people who became Red Sox fans in 2004, Oregon fans in 94, and cubs fans lately. The term fair weather doesn’t begin to describe him. Some people should stick to making candles or soap instead of calling in to radio shows with opinions that make them look dumb. If Dave called into Rome he would get hit with not a very good call real quick. Joe beaver show lets any idiot ramble on incessantly just like the hosts. Right Scotty? Heard your garbage before too.

They gave ASU a pretty good game last year also. Pretty good for a school that only started playing football in 2011.
that was Arizona. UTSA played them tough in Tucson last year in a 10 pt loss but almost beat them two years ago at the Alamodome. If I recall there was an interception in the near or in the end zone by Arizona that saved them from an embarrassing loss. That team was coached by Larry Coker
