The reputation of the PAC12, what difference does it make?

The last thread was getting pretty long and I’m not sure if angry is out selling soap or practicing some new guitar licks. How about a short discussion of the significance of the record of PAC12 teams vs other conferences; as relates to the Beavs.

The ucks vs Huskers brought this to mind. Would an uck win do anything to embellish the rep of the PAC? Of the Beavs?

I cannot favor the ucks, even if it would somehow make the Beavs more respectable…which I don’t think it does.

Oh, and thanks to Jack for running the pick-em, how did week two turn out?

  2. A Duck win over Nebraska wouldn’t have any impact on the Beavers as a singular program. However, any win from a Pac-12 school over another Power 5 opponent has impact on the nations view of the Pac-12 as a conference, which will almost certainly play a roll in making the playoff, playoff seeding and at-large bowl selections.

    • I agree.
Until the Beavs are in the top 1/3 of the PAC I don’t think the rep of the conference is a significant factor for them. A lower tier bowl is a lower tier bowl is a lower tier bowl…

    • There were some gem quotes.

Actually think he makes a valid point here…

“t’s not whether you win or lose, it’s the team that wins is the one that has the most fun. Crap like that that’s contaminated America where they give every kid a trophy and they don’t keep score in Little League anymore. I think that entire thing has retarded the competitive spirit of America. We need to keep that in mind as coaches and we need to aggressively reinforce our points.”

      Various other quotes
“Mentally, [the players] overindulged whatever success we considered that we had last year,” Leach said.

“We have this assumption that they know stuff. As coaches we need to be smart enough and disciplined enough to get that out of our heads. They don’t know anything. We wouldn’t be reteaching the same stuff if we could trust any level of retention. We can’t.”

      Among his other critiques:

      • “I’ve got receivers running routes that don’t even resemble anything we teach.”

      • “We don’t tuck the ball and go straight upfield. We do all of these stupid moves.”

      • “We run out of bounds more than any team in the country.”

      • “We’re the easiest team in the country to tackle.”

      • “We don’t like to run and hit, and this is a game for running and hitting. We don’t care to do that.”

Looks like Aunt Patty is trying to steal Andersen’s toughen up mantra.

      • “We don’t tuck the ball and go straight upfield. We do all of these stupid moves.”

Sounds like a certain OSU player that some of us have been stating this for a couple years about. Maybe he went to an Aunt Patty football camp. Then learned the going backwards part on his own

  3. I think if the Huskers win you will get a lot of “Nebraska’s back” stories even though they’ve played two crappy teams in Fresno and Wyoming and this is not the Ducks of two or three years ago. I don’t know if a Duck loss does that much to the P-12 anymore.

I think there’s a lot of energy around whether the Washington Huskies are for real at this point and the Ducks are kind of an afterthought. If the Huskies lose soon then the league might take a reputation hit.

The Husker/Duck game is a tough call because I’ve always hated both programs long before the Riley and Nikegon era. In some ways I want the Ducks to kick their asses to reinforce some of the Biley poor coaching tendencies (also I can never get enough of a panicked Banker “hand-jiving on the sidelines). One team that I don’t like is going to win and I’ve resigned myself to that fact.

    • “I think if the Huskers win you will get a lot of “Nebraska’s back” stories”

tOSU and Michigan will expose just how far the gap is between them. Also they have RiLLLLey

    • In most cases you root for the conference to do well. The strength of the conference can reflect positively on the national landscape, including recruiting. So from that aspect I would like to see the conference do well. I could careless about ucks, whether they win or lose I prefer to ignore them. However, part of me wants to see Nebraska get killed, despite the positive spin down South.

Most of the “respect” for the conference is won during Bowl games, those games are at the end of the season when for the most part teams are playing their best. Games early in the season, involve young or inexperienced talent that will grow throughout the season and hopefully improve.

    • The thing that ALWAYS blew my mind regarding Hekker was that Riley/Read & co. failed to use his arm. It was no secret that he could pass well, but his ability was never used to put question marks in the minds of opponents.

      • Off the top of my head the last time I can recall an OSU punter throwing a pass (successfully!) for a first down was the game at Louisville. 2005? I don’t recall the exact year or even who the punter was but it was early in the game. I do remember thinking to mysefl, OSU came here to win this game! Only to have Lucy pull the football for another non conference road beat down. I don’t think they were a P5 team at the time either. Big Least?

    • I always knew he had the upside, I even stuck up for him a few times here. He kicked a high ball with good hang time and decent yardage. What he lacked was consistency. Also that BYU game in 50 mph winds was terrible. I more blame the coaching staff for not going over lower angled punts leading in to that game though.

    • Whoever downvoted must not have seen the Wisconsin backwards punt, or the Vegas Bowl punt into the sideline stands. Let’s not pretend we thought he’d make it big – but we can still be happy for him.

  4. Its good for the Pac if UO wins….but its a hard call for me. I tend to want to see Banker get torched again. However, UO’s defense is bad until proven otherwise, and I can see a Nebraska win.

Well, the Reser upgrade is looking fairly clean and unimpressive at the moment:

    http://webcam.oregonstate.edu/reser/

Are they supposed to have the roof done by Saturday? Its kind of the most dominating feature at the moment, the rest of the “terrace” is a pretty unremarkable deck of concrete. There really should have been some other attention to detail and some use of OSU colors besides the black seats.

  5. and he couldn’t beat out our WR?

#BeaverNation alert – Former #GoBeavs (and Elite 11) QB Luke Del Rio throws for 320 yards and 4 TDs today for #UF, 45-7 win over Kentucky.

        • Agreed. I don’t know why anyone thinks he was run off. He very much does not suit the O. Even playing a hybrid to accommodate his skill set would do a disservice to him. I think there are people in his life who can see this pretty clearly and counseled him well.

          • maybe so, Jack, but it will look awkward when we see Del Rio playing in the SEC championship game, or some such. Which is the same reason OSU can’t afford to have Riley see any success, at least until such time as Andersen has stabilized things with some 6-7-8 wins per year.

          • yup. Even had LDR stuck around and been the starter last season, they still would’ve been 2-10 with that godawful defense. Someone else also stated it, Oregon St does not have the talent that Florida does.

      • “it will look awkward when we see Del Rio playing in the SEC championship game, or some such.”

assuming he actually plays in “some such” doesn’t mean the Beavs would have benefited from having him; a year watching a different team with new (to him) coaches in a system that suits him is surely contributing to his success.

  6. OT: Baseball

Danny up with a piece on baseball, mentions the snub. While Casey says, “It bothers me a lot.” he also said it would not be productive to have the season’s end on his mind entering a new year.

Since we are talking some about reputations here (of the PAC) I’m reminded that the reputation of the Beavs Baseball program wasn’t enough to get them into the postseason, thanks Meggs!! Gonna be interesting to see the games vs the leg humpers next season, Casey will be more intense than usual.

D1 Baseball is teasing a paywall story on Cadyn Grenier’s summer in the Cape Cod League, apparently did very well at SS. Coincidentally (?) he is one of only two players quoted in Danny’s piece. Anyone with a D1 subscription able to share a recap?

    News——Billy King has transferred

  7. Has anyone looked at the VFC/VTV webcam as of late? http://webcam.oregonstate.edu/reser/

For those that can’t look at the webcam for whatever reason, they’ve put up poles field level for a net to prevent balls being kicked into the terrace area. They’ve also been adding sponsor boards to the wall of the stands behind the north end zone…does this mean the end of sponsor names on the sides of the Jumbo Tron to actually utilize the ENTIRE screen to display replays/game?!

      • Mmm maybe, but US Bank is one of the ads that I can tell and they were always on the Jumbo Tron. So I’m thinking they’re trying to get more of the attention at the VFC due to tv exposure of the new VTV project and

    • Massari said they decided to not put nets but to keep a clean look and let balls land in Terrace area.

Must say I am extremely disappointed in this last moment change to install ugly nets. Poor Terrace people have to look through a dang net now. Dumb decision by Massari.

Another notch down on the project. Also the far right of the Terrace is a different color because they stupidly did not pour it all on the same day in the same conditions. That part was done near some rain.

      • Yep. Two weeks ago Massari indeed said there would be no nets. What a flip flopper. Agree no nets was way to go. As for the concrete, looks like the who thing will need a stain now to fix their mistake, which means don’t expect it and get used to the two tone blemish. Ugh.

      • I want to know who was in charge of this project. Check it out: https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/t31.0-8/14257488_10153882460179562_4888900568297811638_o.jpg

Is it a kitchen appliance, a boom box with a cd and cassette player, a bunker, or what? The building has no architectural significance at all. The inside might be nice, but from the outside it must be the ugliest building on the entire campus. What a shame when we have such a beautiful campus.

        • That parking structure across the street is worse. It actually looks better in white then the tan-ish color it was. The white even makes the roof look less appalling than it did…….it still needs to be bright orange.

        • “no architectural significant at all” is correct…and even when the rest of the changes are tacked on, it won’t “fit” with the east side of Reser….which is allegedly what the west side will look like one day.

I don’t care for the “primer white,” and the wedge of aluminum bleacher seats on the left side look like an afterthought

The only value at this point is the locker room interior, which the players seemed to genuinely like, but which I also think will be outdated in comparison to other programs within about 5 – 7 years.

What would have been cool in my opinion is instead of the roof would have been a deck of seating supported above the building, so there was a seating section, the “terrace,” and then the lower seats. The front, instead of the white car port, should have had 4 mini brick towers that mimic the look of the Reser east side entrance, but at appropriate scale. That would have provided architectual consistency. And costs…

    • So it looks like the roof won’t be done for the home opener?

I imagine by Friday they’ll want to do a practice run on food/drink service…a “soft opening”…

  8. Nets way to low. Balls will fly over nets. Look at the nets on the practice field. They are way taller.

Watch out wine and cheese lovers, the ball is coming to you

  9. For those of you who care about uniformy stuff, sounds like we’ll have new uniforms for homecoming weekend, celebrating the 1942 Rosebowl team (played Duke at Duke because of concern over WWII safety in Los Angeles)

  10. FYI –

“Darell Garretson & Seth Collins join Coach Andersen at 6 p.m. today for Beaver Sports Talk at BWW in Corv. Live on BVR Sports Radio Network”

    • earlier in this thread, when I said Andersen “ran Del Rio off” I didn’t mean that he told the kid to get lost, I meant that rather than adjusting his scheme to the talent available, he took a doctrinaire attitude, probably informed by McGiven’s insistence, that he go with a “pure” read/option QB like Collins. That was a strategic error of the first magnitude, in my opinion, as last year’s team with Del Rio was perhaps a 3-4 win team; 50 to 100% improvement over what we saw.

    • The GoPro idea is brilliant. With a GoPro on a QB’s helmet you can get a pretty good idea where his eyes are looking on each play. Is he going through all his options? Is he choosing the best one? Could useful for evaluating a lot of positions:

  11. According to a post practice interview with Clune, Wallace was out there practicing. Clune called him “big, fast and beautiful looking as a football player.” Which is both good to know and kind of weird.

    • Leach is up against it to be sure, because Peterson in Seattle comes across as a choir boy by comparison and in today’s media environment he’s going to lose that battle every time. In some ways (but not wins/losses) the Leach saga reminds me of the image problems Dennis Erickson and his teams at OSU faced from some vantage points.

  12. Any bets on whether Leach gets released next year? Peterson’s success with UW is going to be the straw that broke the back…..calling it now.

  13. Just god damn it go beavs. Really hoping this game is a blowout, and not competitive at all.

As fast as this thread, I hate every other pac12 team. Hope they all lose and their fans have to deal with it. Only thing I want to see is beaver wins but Jesus christ it never happens.
