Home Football McMaryion and these Coaches

McMaryion and these Coaches

302

After the Civil War, when he almost lead what is basically a high school football team to victory, I said this was the guy. Then today he comes in and makes it look easy after sitting all game in adverse conditions. After just a handful of passes he surpassed, in performance, the other QBs by a long-shot.

Everyone see why I’m high on the guy now? Or, if not convinced he’s the answer, at least want to see him play a few games?

I can’t for the life of me see why you’d bench a high IQ player (4.0 GPA), who by the coaches admission mastered the playbook within weeks last camp, who can throw a beautiful ball, over a lower conference transfer and a walk-on, but my only guess is pure nepotism. You just can’t escape nepotism. Riley had it, GA has it, and then the fans follow along and say “Coach knows best” or actively look for reasons McM failed (e.g. The INT he throw on that screen pass, totally ignoring that Villimin dropped a TD on him earlier in that game). Whatever, this is the best QB on the roster. Moran might be better, but right now McM is the best option.

He’ll probably get killed next week vs Washington and everyone will view that as proof he’s bad. He’s better than the other two; that’s all I know at this point. Whether he is good or great is up in the air and we need game action to find out.

Moving on, these coaches cost the Beavs this game. It’s heartbreaking for them because they played well enough to win back to back conference games, and the staff let them down in so many ways. You guys saw it, so I don’t need to rehash it, but feel free to give all the examples you saw for discussion purposes.

  1. Agree 100%. I said all of this weeks ago but I’ll say it again for posterity. He’s been the backup QB for a year. He’s started and had success in big games. He knows the playbook. He can obviously throw a nice ball.

    What.

    In.

    The.

    Fuck.

    • They don’t give an answer, and the reporters don’t ask the question, so how will we know? I made a joke last week it was racism because I seriously can’t think of a logical reason. But more likely it’s nepotism and GA going with “his boy”. I really HATE coaches who do that. It is at the peril of the entire team to do something like that. Yet in the same breath GA claims he will play the guys who give the team the best chance to win. What crap.

      • Or perhaps the intangibles he possess are things like puling the ball down and running in circles instead of looking for his second and third reads… not knowing or caring where the LOS or line to gain are… Not looking at his check down, instead throwing into triple coverage (to be fair that was each of our QBs yesterday).

There is so little calm in his play that drinking four cups of coffee might settle him down.

But he is the only one of the three who can pass beyond 15 yards. I just wish his pocket presence didn’t look like someone hiding in a honey bucket… not knowing the walls are invisible.

        • I think all that is done. Remember Petersen had to do the same up at UW. He was willing to kick the best player off the team to prove his point.

MM just has zero presence. But it might work next week. Just hand the ball off and keep the clock running. If it works (since it is our strength), then we have a chance. If not, the game ends sooner.

  2. I’d also like to add: In a situation like this where there’s uncertainty, always start a Riley QB over a GA QB.

One thing Riley knows how to do is recruit and coach QBs. One thing GA is awful at? The same recruiting and coaching QBs.

    • I think maybe he’s delusional because of the Chuckie Keeton factor. They got lucky with a freak (but fragile) QB and he blew up and was awesome before he got hurt for the rest of his career.

Now they think they have this magic eye for picking QBs, and all they end up doing is playing WR.

      • Check Vanderveen’s and Mcmaryion’s HS tape. Both good passing dual threat quarterbacks, in fact I remember us being confused on why they would have been recruited or why they would have committed to a Riley coached team.

Both perfect fits for a spread offense if properly coached. But that’s apparently a huge fucking if at this point.

        • I know. Vanderveen was right up the road and I saw him play. He’s got a funky long-armed throwing motion that tips throws, and I don’t think he’d work out. He also bulked up to play TE and his body changed. He got stiffer/less mobile from the muscle he added. Not convinced he’d make a good QB at all.

But, they mismanaged him. They made Nall gain a ton of weight and now he’s always hurt. There are some major evaluation problems.

          • That’s my point in it’s entirety.

Piss poor talent evaluation and an obvious preference for the guys they recruited.

Nall is obviously a monster, but let’s dick dally the fuck around and have him gain weight and lose weight and change positions and change back and blah blah fucking blah blah blah.

Start a real quarterback that can make reads and complete a god damned pass.

Start a running back that has good vision and huge power.

If you didn’t recruit them, fucking get over it and recruit better.

          • If you didn’t recruit them, fucking get over it and recruit better.

            Exactly.

And I made a post about a year ago talking about the mismanaging Nall and others to their detriment, and also that StS was throwing hospital balls. This staff is stubborn and doing things their way. Fine, but until they get all their guys, they’re putting all these players at risk, not giving the fanbase the best product they can, and also not being fair to the Riley players. If they view that all as collateral damage, fine, but I think it’s unfair and the approach should be more play the best guy (no matter of anything else) and recruit into your program. This might makes right approach is annoying.

Think how happy and in love with the staff were last week with the win, though. When it’s a win, everyone pushes these problems under the rug.

The Riley leftovers have gotten such a raw deal. Well, the ones who are better than the GA players at least.

  3. I was preaching patience before, but this game has me falling off the Andersen-wagon.

It’s one thing to lose because you don’t have the talent, or the players are learning a new system. I have no problem waiting for those things to improve. I DO have a problem when highly paid coaches make horrible decisions that sabotage the team’s chances. Everyone watching, TV and radio announcers included, were basically saying to stop passing so much, if at all.

Constantly calling pass plays in bad weather that were obviously doing nothing other than killing drives is sabotage. The players deserve better than that, especially when they’re putting their bodies on the line, like we saw. Disgraceful coaching today, Clune excluded. D came to ball.

    • The D wasn’t as good as the final score indicated, though. Key turnovers helped make the numbers look good. But Utah should have had 14 more points at least.

They were the best unit and played well enough to win, but they weren’t great.

      • If we’re counting hypotheticals, subtract 7 for the gift Blount gave them right by the goal line (and no knock on him, I hope he’s OK.) D also got that stop at the end to give the O a last ditch attempt at a win.

      • And Utah is a marginal P-12 offense at best, kind of like his buddy GA, Whittingham’s team’s problems are usually on the offensive side.

  4. Given what I’ve seen from this staff regarding QB’s and GA’s obsession with Seth Collins before the team even practiced last year, why wouldn’t have Del Rio been a servicable three year starter? Was he too slow or too stupid to run this offense?

And I’m fine with McM taking over now, just curious about Del Rio. I think this staff is clueless about QB’s and it could become a chronic problem.

    • No, Del Rio would have been fine. Vanderveen would have been fine. Mcmaryion would have been fine.

Instead, we’re a year and a half in to this with one real win and one close loss for no fucking reason. This staff is obsessed with finding Chuckie Keeton part 2 and can’t see the fucking forest because they’re standing in the desert.

      • Vanderveen hadn’t thrown a pass in 4 years and had very bad mechanics. I’m not sure why you say he’d be fine.

Del Rio maybe, but his style wasn’t a great match for the offense they claimed to want to run.

        • Bullshit, he was competing with Del Rio to be Mannion’s backup, and they actually went back and forth with who was the backup QB Mannion’s senior year.

          Go look it up.

          • The point is that he was something like a top 20 in the country dual threat quarterback recruit out of high school. Then he was coached by Langs and then Garrett and was good enough to be the clear cut backup to Mannion.

Then these chuckleheads roll in and don’t even give him a glance, and have him convert to TE so they could start StHC and fucking Mitchell, who by the way was on the squad with Mannion and Vanderveen. If he was starter or backup material he would have been in the running instead of riding the pine.

          • I agree with that. They came in with the “we’re the new sheriff in town” and decided there would be collateral damage. The collateral damage looks random b/c of their inability to evaluate talent.

The thing is, I do think they’ve done a good job at finding better looking 2 and 3 star talent than Riley and his staff. But they totally missed on analyzing Riley’s players. They seemed to want to make examples of those players rather than pick the best ones.

          • You are incorrect about not giving QBs a look. I agree that Seth was favored improperly. But don’t blame GA for Del Rio and Vanderveen. One had a foot out the door and didn’t care. The other isn’t as good as any of the other QBs we’ve had on the roster.

I’m surprised I don’t hear any whining about how Kempt should be the starter for us instead of being third or fourth string for Iowa State.

And as a general rule I don’t know that I’d go with Riley’s QB assessments. What he left after Mannion was a hot mess. LDR might have worked in his system, but what numbers would he have had with the O-line that was left?

And we are talking about a guy who chose Jake Gelakoska over Kellen Moore.

But I get it. With three years and a decent arm Riley can build a QB. I’m thinking Pensyl was not going to be our savior.

  5. Aren’t you the same guy who stated earlier this year football was not a high IQ sport and you’d take a team full of dumb guys over a team of smart guys? Or something like that?

Are you going to blame GA for throwing McMaryion to the wolves (or dawgs in this case) when he gets taken apart by the UW defense? Because that’s what is going to happen next Saturday. After the injuries I saw to Garretson and Blount I don’t think either of them will be playing next weekend. Looks like you’ll get your wish.

Not disagreeing with you here. I’ve seen enough of Garretson now and realize he’s not the answer. He can run but that’s about it.

    • Aren’t you the same guy who stated earlier this year football was not a high IQ sport and you’d take a team full of dumb guys over a team of smart guys? Or something like that?

      Nope.

    • I think the UW game is problematic for a young team that is going to get killed. How do you minimize injuries? It feels like the Arizona and Oregon games might be winnable if enough good players are healthy, hell maybe even Stanford. I don’t want the UW game to become a momentum crusher. It’s not remotely winnable (and I would love to eat my words).

      • You’re right. Not a chance. You don’t want to look like a bunch of pussies but you also don’t want to get all of your starters hurt in a game you might as well not even show up for.

      • I hope the players don’t have that mindset. They all do the same weight training and such to get prepared for a game. I’d hope the odds of a Beaver player hurting a Washington player are the same. Not sure why WA would injure all our players. Not following this logic here.

Just go there, play the best guys, and see what happens.
Nothing gets me angrier than coaches who don’t play the best guys. Remember when Riley kept playing that #28 guy like 8 years ago? Brutal. GA is doing it. They all do it. They are stubborn and think they know it all, but objectively it’s easy to see when a player is overmatched and not a fit/answer. The change should be made immediately.

  6. Bullshit. you wrote something along those lines. I may not remember the quote exactly but that was the jist of it.

I’m not gonna go back and look either. I don’t need to because I disagreed with your statement and brought up Stanford as an example. I’m sure there were plenty of others here that read it and will back this up.

        • Those players also may not be dumb in the football sense.

I’m not understanding this line of discussion. Football is not a hard game to understand. Street, book or un- smart kids can all understand the game equally and succeed within it.

          • The conversation was about players with ability never getting to show it because they’re required to go to college. Basically I feel there should be a league for players who have no academic ability but high football ability.

          • I understand that football players are lost in the cracks because the minor leagues are exclusively the college ranks. What I don’t understand is how recalling that discussion (correctly or not) pertains to this discussion.

          • College football=NFL minor leagues. With the caveat the players have to be ‘smart enough’ to make it into college and continue passing yoga bowling classes while enrolled.

Baseball minor leagues=no academic requirement needed.

          • Angry, there is a “league for players who have no academic ability but high football ability”… it is called the Mountain West Conference.

  7. Does anyone here think that the receivers feel like McM is their guy? I thought the sudden energy was perceptible when he came into the game. Am I off base with that thought?

  8. I didn’t watch the second half (left to go play basketball instead, since the Beavers didn’t seem like they were interested in running the ball), but the saddest part about this game is that I don’t think we even needed McMaryion to win (how did he do BTW? Sounds like he did great). If we took half the pass plays we did and replaced them with Nall power runs or intelligent edge run plays, we could’ve easily won this game.

    This one hurts, bad.

    • Nall apparently re-aggrivated is injury on his only run of the game, so his power game was not available. That guy has got to get healthy and stay healthy or it’s going to be a “what could have been ” career.

      • I was all for resting him this game. The chance of re-injury seemed high, or that he “wouldn’t be himself,” and wouldn’t be as effective anyway. Should have sat him and got him as healthy as possible.

        • My gripe is when Nall went down why wasn’t Cook brought in immediately… it took over 2 quarters for them to bring the guy in who nearly killed some Utah players when he finally was unleashed. I think GA needs to have a talk with his offensive coaches and make sure they all know what the hell to do if a particular player goes down. It was not as if we didn’t know Nall was already hurt from the last game. Come on! Cook should have been in there from the beginning of the game.

  9. Our identity needs to be run first and run straight at them. Mux in some outside runs on sweeps and quick high odds passing (mostly on 3rd down, occasionally on 2nd) and that is about it. Beavers will struggle until they week in and week out play to their identity as a run first team. Regardless of what Goe or anyone else says. Stick with and get accustomed to working towards mastering your strength. 63% run to 37% pass is this team’s best shot at more wins. Will be true against WSU and true against Oregon and 99% true regardless of who we play.

    RUN THE DAM FOOTBALL.

    • Yup, additionally: very often when in a 2nd and 4-6 yds to make, PLAN TO USE 2 DOWNS TO GET THE FIRSTDOWN.
Pay attention to field position, but don’t kneejerk into a pass on 3rd and long.

      • Agree OOB, and they should scheme to use tempo to catch the defense off guard in those situations. Third or fourth and short get to the line quick and snap the ball before the defense gets it’s shit together.

  10. I could see Nebraska getting to 8-0, including a win at Wisconsin. I can’t imagine them being within two TDs of Ohio State, though. Urban Meyer’s offense is basically the blueprint for embarrassing a Mark Banker defense.

      • Matchups. Banker’s defensive schemes work much better against what Wisconsin does offensively than what Ohio State does. People may not want to admit it, but Nebraska is a pretty damn good team this year. Maybe not quite on the level of tOSU/Michigan/Wisconsin, but I’ll give them a fighting chance against Wisconsin.

        • Nebraska has played a very weak schedule so far. Fresno St. and Wyoming are dumpster fires, you know the story about Oregon. I will concede that at least going into the Indiana game they seem to be a good 4th quarter team. Weakest undefeated team in the nation and the media is lapping it up because of their love of Aw Shucks. I’ll check back after Wisconsin and Ohio St.

        • There is absolutely no way Nebraska will finish the year in the top ten. Their undefeated record against mediocre at best competition is fools gold.

          • they’ll still win at least 9 games and everyone in Lincoln will think Nebby is back and contend for a CFP spot next year. But they forget as Beavergopher so eloquently pointed out in a previous thread that Armstrong is a senior. Next year is a new QB for the children of the corn. We all know what that means. This season is probably going to be a high water mark for them

          • They’ll be so happy to win 9 games with Smiley Riley, thinking everything’s gonna be great, while forgetting they just had a guy who did at least that every single year. With the pressure off, watch Riles mail it in next year and win 6-8

  11. I’m thinking there’s not a lot of shame in the Beavers loss to the Buffs on the road. CU is taking ASU to the shed so far 30-10 early 3Q, offense going crazy.

  12. I wonder why the press doesn’t ask Andersen about this? I didn’t see the game, but Garretson has been an awful passer….its hard to imagine why he doesn’t get some meaningful game reps, particularly when Garretson hasn’t been “100%,” and McM knows the playbook better than Blount.

  13. This loss is 100% on the coaches and it’s complete bullshit. They seriously need to answer some tough questions about the shit show they put on today. I’ve been all for giving GA time to rebuild but when he and his staff totally fuck up a completely winnable game it’s inexcusable. How can the players continue to have respect for these guys? There needs to be some serious improvements to game planning and play calling very soon. Otherwise, why keep this crew around? We might as well cut bait at the end of the season and start the rebuild again. I’d rather lose the 2 years than to have another 10 years of this crap.

    • What the fuck are you talking about? Special teams made some mistakes. WRs wouldn’t catch the ball on the off chance it hit them squarely in the hands. Plain old drops were the reason for at least five drives dying. The ones that didn’t hit them squarely in the hands magically hit nobody. But it’s not like they weren’t open.

Nobody’s talking about how much the refs sucked. Can anyone tell me what the call was on Harlow? I watched the play when I got home, and I’m thinking they called the number wrong… and that the player they were calling the penalty on wasn’t on the field. Seriously, they just imagined a 15 yard Utah gift.

The non-facemask on Bolden that set up the fumble and their last TD?

The non-holding against Arnold at the point of attack (seriously lots of uncalled holds on Utah that weren’t exactly buried in line play)?

The stemming call that was complete bullshit… followed by a make-up call that was also complete bullshit in our favor?

At least two really really obvious interference non-calls?

Even the late hit to end the game?

You all got a bunch of panties bunched up in what I will start calling your head holes if you don’t at least see the game for what it was.

  14. Here you go Angry…. time to see if you’re as smart as you think you are. 2 separate coaching staffs disagree with you and here’s your chance to prove them (and me) wrong.

  15. So I don’t get what you’re all talking about, thinking we would’ve done better running the ball. Nall was out, and those other two backs couldn’t do shit against a far inferior defense last week. And McM looked good? He was playing at the end of a game against a tired defense. Garretson has done good at times this season. Blount was good against the Broncos. McM was good in one game last year. If I recall correctly, he was trounced in other appearances, right alongside “StS.”

    • Pierce, Lucas, and Bolden gained 6.7, 7.0, and 8.7 yards per carry respectively. Garretson was 1-16 with 1 yard after almost 3 quarters! And you’re telling me you don’t think we should have kept running the ball?????

      • Huh. I didn’t actually know their stats. *shrug* Whatever I’ve seen of the backs besides Nall, they get one or two good runs, and then are usually eaten up around the line of scrimmage. Could’ve sworn that was the case again on Saturday. Eh.

I just don’t think it’s that big a deal. They’ve won one more game than I thought they would this year. They’ve had a couple close games in a row, so they’re better than I thought they would be. They only won two games last year, and most since Anderson’s been here haven’t been close.

I just expected another shit year. OSU has had plenty of those in the past. I try not to invest too much emotion or expect anything; I’ll give it another couple years before I consider doing those things again. See where Anderson’s got the program (if he’s still here).

  16. What a difference a week makes in the mood around here (and the same could have been said last weekend, though with the mood swing was in the opposite direction). Do people feel that the play-calling and personnel decisions on offense were really any worse this week than they were against Cal? A healthy Ryan Nall simply makes the offense so much better than it has any business being.

    • “Do people feel that the play-calling and personnel decisions on offense were really any worse this week than they were against Cal?”

      Yes.

      • The only thing I’ll say about it being different is that Cook didn’t come in until late. Everyone knew Nall was out and were asking what was wrong with Cook. Then he made a ST hit and caught a flare for a good gain.

I’m not sure why he wasn’t used to fill the gap Nall’s injury left. It’s tough to have a next an up attitude when the next man up doesn’t play.

    • Im not defending Garretson, but he hit several recievers in the hands and they dropped balls today, it’s happened in every game this year. Not enough to make a big diffrence in his percentage, but it could have made a diffrence on at least 2, 3 and outs. I didn’t see the last series, did McM have the same thing happen at the end?
I personally think this is the least talented group on the team. Vilamin is a no show, Bolden drops relatively everything, collins was hurt?, Hernandez is not quite ready as is bradford. Can our TE catch? Sure don’t seem like it since the balls don’t go their way. Where are the drag routes and TE delays?
I understand we need to run, run, run but we need to open up the defense with solid passing, and I also realize we need a qb that can throw. But a semi accurate QB should be good enough with good, even ok recievers…..which we don’t have.

        • I only saw one drop, but it was right in the WRs hands. Brennan probably has to go because there are just too many drops, and since it’s every WR you have to think something is wrong on a fundamental level. The high number of drops is something I can’t explain. Lack of focus? Anxiety? I don’t know, but it’s a real problem that someone has to correct last year.

          • I missed the INT but wasn’t that a deflection? And to me it comes acrossed as laziness or lack of focus. It goes along with not getting seperation on some plays. I’d be willing to give some of the young and newer guys a pass but vilamin and Bolden are the key perpetrators of the poor handling.
Maybe they can get TJ to come back and coach.

          • Remember, Brennan is a “Riley guy”, he’ll be gone.
Only question is, with GA’s focus on D and the nepotism he favors, who will McGiven/Baldwin bring in?

        • I thought so. It’s one of the most frustrating things to watch besides an offensive linemen olé.
I wrote that comment after watching the wincy/tosu overtime. That Touchdown throw at the end, don’t know if anybody saw it but the ball was thrown behind the reciever to the outside and the reciever broke and stretched for the catch. I can’t think of one guy on our team who would have made that catch, let alone made a brake to attempt a catch.

  17. This was a case of coaches not believing they are ready to beat Utah yet. The Utah connections and respect for what Wittingham has done is a self defeating relationship for the staff. They prepped us all week about being unable to run inside on Utah, and decided that throwing was the solution. Looking at the ypc of each runner shows us that they abandoned what worked best:
    Bolden 8.7
    Pierce 6.7
    Lucas 7
Outrageous to keep throwing in that wind, given the erratic results in normal conditions the week before.

  18. With Angry on McMaryion has to start vs UW. Blount seeing the field this year was unneeded with Marcus. Blount as a freshman is not at the level of Marcus so he should never go in before him. McMaryion came in with a perfect attitude and has clear ideas of what we wanted to do unlike Blount and at times Garretson.

Right now I give Clune most credit on this staff. If GA puts in Blount before Marcus again this year then GA will lose credibility amongst fans. Rebuilds don’t need to waste games when they can happen quicker with better decisions.

  19. This was a winnable game, but the conditions were extreme. The stats are pretty similar so I don’t put it all on the QB. Utah QB was 4-19 or something just like Garretson. We Hiked over the punter’s head, lead to two points, Blount’s fumble at the 9 lead to 7 points. If we make both field goals we win that game.

Injuries are just killing this team. Robinette goes down, Blount, Garretson, Nall, blah blah when are we just going to stay healthy?

Arizona, Stanford, Ucla, Oregon still look winnable. Wazzu can be jeckyl and hyde, and at home possible (see E Wa). There are still some games we could do well to win. Need to get healthy, and have better production in the passing game. Feels like we are getting there or closer would really help if we could get and stay healthy. Maybe we could use the UW game as a bye??

    • We’re seeing a lot of improvement in the run game too. It’s too bad their D committed 10 to the LOS in the second half, or we could have moved it a bit more that way.

  20. Maybe it’s been suggested already (havent read the whole thread) but is it a bad idea to have the QB coach also serving as OC and play caller? Is McGiven just so consumed by his new duties as OC that he can’t adequately assess the QB situation?
We have two guys coaching receivers as their full time job, but 1 guy coaching QB’s/GamePlanning/play calling (ok, woods apparently is assistant OC, but he’s not in play calling mode)

Given how poor our QBs have played this season and last, is it right to pull coaching resources away from that position?

    • some were ready to anoint him as the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ after the almost come from behind civil war win last year.

The offense looks just as lost at times as last year when Baldwin was calling the plays.

  21. I’m ready to move on from Garretson. I’ve seen enough. Guy can do some damage with his running ability but that’s about it.

With that in mind the Utes QB didn’t exactly light the world on fire today either. So there is that. This game was there for the taking.

We can bellyache all we want about the Beavs not running the ball enough. Should they have run the ball more today? Maybe. Probably. You can run, run and run some more. But at some point the defense is going to load the box and force you to pass. If your QB can’t hit the broadside of a barn and his receivers aren’t doing him any favors, you’re kinda fucked. Yes it is time to give McMaryion a chance but he may look just as awful as the others against a very good UW D next weekend. But with injuries to Garretson and Blount it may be McMaryion by default. I hate to see them burn a redshirt on Mason Moran but it may have to happen. I have my doubts he’s durable enough or even ready. Might be time for a position switch back to QB for Seth Collins.

Speaking of receivers, Villamin? Take a seat. Bolden is 50/50 on fly sweeps and makes just as many boneheaded plays as he makes good ones. I’ve seen enough of some of these older guys and ready for a youth movement in that department. This position was supposed to be a strength. It is far from that.

Special teams was a dumpster fire today and imo was a big factor in losing. Left points on the table and a bad snap cost 2 points. Also I question the decision to attempt a 51 yard FG with that wind in the first half. Dumb move. Pooch punt and play for field position. Also disagreed with the decision to decline the holding penalty in the 4th. Again, field position and the Beavs still had 2 timeouts despite there only being about 5 minutes left in the game.

Defense looked leaps and bounds better today and gasp! Even recorded a sack. Did the weather have anything to do with it?

I remain unconvinced Utah will win the south. Not sold on them at all.

The next two games will not be kind to the Beavs. UW and WSU are the best teams in the North. The last 4 do not look anywhere near as formidable. UCLA looks like a completely different team without Josh Rosen and cannot run the ball even when he’s in there. Stanford has QB play issues as well and even without McCaffrey today had to rally late to beat an overrated as shit Notre lame team in South Bend. Arizona and Oregon both look awful.

Sit Nall next week and take your lumps. Bigger picture is more important than one game that’s going to be a blowout even with him

    • Nall should have sat against Utah. Play him at UW and he’ll get hurt again. Like that California player, someone will just torque his ankle in a pile/tackke/after a tackle. Let his ankle heal a bit longer.

Bolden is high risk/sometimes reward, and this is the second staff to over-estimaye. I figure he must practice well? Which WR are available for more reps? Jarmon?

Does rhe starting TE return this season, or is he out all season?

  22. I haven’t read every comment yet, just got through the first few, but while Garretson is far from a good passing QB, his receivers really let him down today. There were a couple wide open, first down targets that the receivers simply dropped the ball after it hit them in the chest. I don’t think these receivers can even catch a cold right now. Not sure if that is on them, the QB or the coaches. It wasn’t all DG today…

  23. I attended this very winnable game today. Below are my thoughts on what happened:

    1) Coaches blew the first half. This started when we won the coin toss and elected to receive allowing Utah to choose the direction. The wind was significant. Deferring and taking the wind at our backs would’ve been the right call.
    2) Despite fighting the wind we threw into and punted high into it giving Utah field position for most of the half.
    3) Our D line got mauled in the first half. The LOS moved at least 5 yard every time and their lineman got the 2nd level effectively eliminating our ability to make them get behind schedule and pass. Their RBS were forgettable, their line won that game.
    4) We mismanaged the clock, field position, and weather the entire half by throwing and punting into it (end of first quarter with 1 second left).
    5) Nall broke that monster run because we pulled Harlow around for a monster kick out block. That play doesn’t happen otherwise. We stopped pulling Harlow like that for some unknown reason.
5a) Nall was injured as he broke a tackle, guy slipped off his ankle but twised Nalls ankle anyways as he ran for another 10 yards.

    2nd half:
    1) Utah went into the wind. We knew they wouldn’t pass and we rolled the safeties up for run D and dared them to throw. They didn’t throw. This was a clutch turning point as it gave us numbers in the box and got momentum for our D.
    2) We stuck to the run and ran Garretson finally. We lacked Garretson runs in the first half.
    3) The weather finally began to clear on the drive Garretson got hurt. It’s no coincidence that we finally completed some passes.
    4) that same drive we threw the hitch route and quick out aging their soft outside coverage which was affective. They played soft all day and we refused to throw the short easy completions. I never saw a bubble screen which is a shame.

    Special teams:
    1) Punts into the wind were mismanaged.
    2) FGS were both bad snaps so not just on the kicker. Also, both situations were inherently obvious by 3rd down that we would be attempting a fg on 4th down. Should’ve used 3rd to center up the ball and get a yard or two to improve the kick. Normally I hate throwing in the towel on 3rd but in a sloppy game, take the points.

    QBs:
    1) Garretson was awful today. Those gloves had to have been a factor. Also, the lack of designed runs for him in the first half was a crime. We don’t play to his strength enough. When we did the offense really clicked and Utah was on their heels. Teams are giving him the short routes and runs, play it.
    2) McM may be the answer but today shouldn’t provide any useful data. He got to throw in the best weather. That wind didn’t feel awful in the stadium but it was no joke. I haven’t seen a football drift that much in reser stadium. Garretson did good work on a bad leg in that nice weather late in the game.
    3) McM may be smart but I am unsure that it proves he can play. He had several bad passes on that last series including some poorly placed balls (behind the receivers etc). I want to see more before a verdict is declared.

    Refs:
    1) what’s up with the Harlow unnecessary roughness?
    2) what’s going on in the line where we keep getting defensive delay of game?
    3) the missed PI in the 3rd on the defender on Collins was a joke, such a drive killer.
    4) why no flag on the final play of the game. Bolden clearly got hit with a ditry play.

Overall, today was both frustrating and encouraging. The coaches can D scheme to stop a one dimensional team (run or pass). However, this was a winnable game that is mostly on the coaches and slightly on the refs. We need to design game plans that stick to the strength of our limited players, when we do our team does well. Finally, the injuries sustained today hurt us for down the stretch. Hope we get healthy.

    • I think the refs were shielded from the last play with Bolden because they were so far out of bounds when it happened.
That last play should have whistled dead anyway. The game clock was at 00 for at least 3 seconds before the ball was snapped. I actually said welp that’s game and had taken a few steps down the aisle when they snapped the ball.
Our D line is getting the delay of game penalties because they’re jumping (not shifting) and simulating a snap which causes the offense to jump. Weird to see that rare call 2 games in a row huh?
I’m not ready to line GA in front of the firing squad like many people are. This program is still headed in the right direction, they’re playing the best football in years and are actually competitive against at least the lower half teams now. Our D’s energy and tackling and penetration are something we haven’t seen in years. (I’m convinced Decoud #14 will play on Sundays).
Our best player so far, our punter, was completely out to lunch today. Not sure what happened there, maybe a personal distraction away from the field? These are kids after all.
Something never mentioned here is the extreme difficulty for any coaching staff to manage the balance between kids that practice great but disappear during games and vice versa. This mental part of the game gets better as kids mature and get experience but it is still a very real part of any sport that most non-players just don’t think about or understand how powerful it is on player/team/coaching dynamics.

      • It’s nice of you to cover for the refs… kinda. But now that I’ve seen the TV version they’re worse than I thought from just watching their management techniques (for lack of a better word) live.

Something never mentioned here is the extreme difficulty for any coaching staff to manage the balance between kids that practice great but disappear during games and vice versa.

Huh? It’s been talked about enough that we know to refer to these phenomena as practice heroes and gamers.

    • Thanks for the succinct, point-by-point analysis. I think it’s write-ups like this that give AB credibility when other blogs and the OL comments degenerate into – well, they just degenerate.

  24. Too much pessimism here. We’re seeing a lot of positives to build on. Will the coaches make mistakes? Of course. That’s football. That’s life. I’m not saying give up all your pessimism but let’s temper it with a little optimism.

  25. I think these coaches know that OSU fans are pushovers and just grateful to have them, and that the media is a bunch of softball pitchers. There’s no sense, to me at least, in the coaching staff that if they mess up the gameplan anyone is going to care or even ask about it.

    • >There’s no sense, to me at least, in the coaching staff that if they mess up the gameplan anyone is going to care or even ask about it.

Huh? Andersen demoted his OC during the first offseason, isn’t that accountability?

  26. http://portlandtribune.com/pt/12-sports/327668-207291-beavers-had-a-chance-to-win

Eggers recap from yesterday. Noticed he calls out the long snapper rather than owens for the field goal (and punt safety) miscues.
Guess its hard to fault the guy who has to throw the ball backwards, between his legs, into the wind, when your QB can’t do it standing upright.

Still waiting for a reporter to question the gameplan, especially when looking at Utah’s run to pass ratio

    • Should clarify, it’s Andersen who called out his long snapper, not Eggers. If GA is ready to single guys out, would be nice if he didnt just keep it directed at the players

    • Both Ds committed to defend the run in the second half. Utah could afford to run against that and win. Their ST didn’t make mistakes, let alone give up points.

If you hadn’t noticed, Utah essentially played better than us yesterday. And they did it by about as much as I thought they would do it. But I thought our D production was backward. I thought we would be the ones to tire late. We were confused a lot. But there was effort to the end from every kid out there.

I was rather happy with yesterday’s game because they exceeded my expectations in terms of conditioning and effort. I think a lot of that has to do with #99 getting that much better every week.

  27. Now that I’ve had time to digest the game, we should’ve won. The game came down to 3 plays: ball on our line as we marched down on them and got bailed out of a DG pick in the end zone with a PI call. With the ball on the 9 yard line we decided to pass, which sailed out the back of the end zone, run with an injured DG, who shockingly further injured himself, and then throw another shitty pass with said injured DG and this resulting in a missed chip shot field goal. This is what I mean when I say coaches lost us this game. We ran down their throats that drive and DG even completed passes, albeit short 5 yarders. We then decide to stray away from our bread and butter on the 9. I don’t know about you guys but this loss makes me feel uneasy about our OC

  28. I went to the Husker board this morning to let them know this is the height of their season. They’re not going to be happy, but since they’re comparing Riley to Osborne it seemed like a good time for reality check.

    • Haha, these poor bastards:

Here is the true reality. Mike Riley consistently over achieved at your program in a big big way and you guys got too used to it and are now seeing the grass is definitely not greener. You got recruits because they wanted to play for him, not because they wanted to be a Beaver. We are seeing that effect with guys like Keyshawn Jr and pulling the top California QBs out 2 years in a row. Given the biggest recruiting budget and top notch facilities, he is showing what he can get his players to do; players he didn’t even recruit. You can come here and call these games eggs, but Oregon State is the bottom feeder of the Pac 12, and every win should be treated like an upset. Conversely, you didn’t get the right to call his losses eggs because you should be happy to be within smelling distance of a winning record. All I can say is thanks for coach Riley and good luck on your search for greener grass.

      • Oh, those poor arrogant bastards. This will be delicious to watch.

File that drivel away for safekeeping until the end of this year and/or next year, angry

      • That’s about as ignorant of our past as I’ve ever seen.

Mike Riley is not a good football coach when he doesn’t have good players. When he had some very good players, he could not get over the hump. When he couldn’t get over the hump, he gave up.

And every one of his teams will reflect this pattern eventually.

Regarding NU’s undefeated record thus far, we will beat Nikegon more soundly and more efficiently than they did. We would also beat every other team they have played thus far. That’s not to say we would beat NU. That’s to say their schedule makes Washington’s schedule look stout.

  29. On a related note, check out Bright O’s tweet at the top of the Twitter feed. He links to Cook’s late 4th quarter play where he crushes 2 Utah players on a nice run and states “it’s about time they let the bull out of it’s cage”.

Sounds like maybe the players are just as confused about the coaching staff’s choices as we are.

    • I’m just happy other people, not including us, are noticing how much better McM is than Blount. Still pissed we played a true frosh over McM for no reason other than coaches playing favorites.

      • If the coaches are playing favorites, the players know it. It seems that’s what we see from the outside based on these kooky decisions. Clearly some players are frustrated with coaching decisions. If the whole receiving core is frustrated that might explain some of the drops (conscious or not). There were still many Garretson over-throws. Mannion would have dropped those balls over the receivers shoulders at least in near-stride. If a player has been here that long he’s going to get frustrated.

The play calling early in the game didn’t account enough for the weather. GA needs to know enough about the offense to step in when there is a problem. That might qualify as nepotism. The other stuff is bias, which i’ve complained about before when qb’s started disappearing. I’ll point out Del Rio has positive rushing yards this season.

  30. All I saw from McM was a nice ball thrown to his first option in what was significantly better weather than the other QB’s had. He also had a few plays where he stared down his receiver the entire time and almost threw an INT.

From what I remember of him in his HS tape and last year and what I saw yesterday, he has all the physical attributes, but the decision making just isn’t there. For example, the guy threw the ball when he was 5 yards past the LOS on the second to last play of the game.

I know you all really want us to have someone that’s The Answer at QB, but this group is just as bad at passing as what we had last year.

    • He’s far from perfect, but he passes more accurate and catchable balls than any other qb we have. Its not even close.
And he made completions when Utah’s D knew passing was our only option to get back in the game.

Garretson may have had the weather excuse yesterday, but what about every other game he’s played in this year? His passing has been every bit as bad as yesterday, aside from the handful of short yardage passes he has completed.
Garretson’s stare downs and throws to the first option have been every bit as glaring, but the ball is also uncatchable more often than not.
I think all we’re saying is McM has outperformed the other QBs on the field so far, and shouldn’t be the 3rd stringer.

Interesting storyline this week is Moran’s redshirt watch. If Garretson and Blount ate unavailable, and if McM gets knocked out of the game for 1 play even, do we bring Moran out, or do we go with Collins and ask him to wing it?

Doubtful McM plays every snap next week vs that Husky pass rush. If Moran plays saturday, is he suddenly our guy the rest of the year, for development purposes?

      • If it was up to me, I’d plan on running Seth or even Wily-Matagi at QB and have them run some sort of option offense before I burned Moran’s redshirt.

          • Right. And he’s a bit of a rail.

The only reason to play him would be of legitimate chance of winning, which hasn’t been on display in practice reports.

          • Too funny that our QB by the end of next weekend could end up being the guy who left the team because we didnt want him playing QB, and came back to the team because his new team didnt want him playing QB.

          • What reports?

We heard something about throwing an interception in fall camp.

And he very well could be struggling. He’s a true frosh. He’s also likely better than all three of our other options while also struggling.

    • Did you miss his TD pass? That was a very well thrown ball. I’m not saying he is going to be the answer long term, but Garrettson is a dumpster fire in the passing game and it has nothing to do with weather. It’s in his head now.

McM was basically given one complete game last year and he managed the game adequately with arm and legs and the team scored 42 points. I think he deserves more chances until recruiting improves.

      • See, that’s my point. Just because DG has been bad doesn’t mean the backups are any better.

We went through this last year with StS. We all (myself included) cried for a backup, any backup, instead of the current guy, and look what we ended up with.

Sometimes the answer is that there is no answer. We need to run the ball more and figure out a wider variety of ways to do that. Period.

  31. I was watching the game online (Ukranian friends) and it was at times glitchy………was there ever a replay of the Sean Harlow personal foul? Seemed like it was glossed over by the announcing team. I have no idea what he did. Also, I am getting so fucking confused on offensive holding, I guess it’s ok to grab jersey at the shoulder pad and hold on to it, because Utah has perfected that technique.

    • Agreed. No one in the stadium around me was aware of what happened. Harlow was right in front of us. That was a drive killer when we had good field position. Refs killed us there.

    • Absolutely no clue what Harlow was called for. I watched that play over and over when I got home because I figured they just had the number wrong. I saw nothing anywhere on the field that came close to being a personal foul.

Does anyone know what happened there?

      • It looked like he punched the defender in the side of the head right off the snap, or at least open hand shoved his head very hard. Didn’t look intentional and was probably aiming for his shoulder pad.

  32. We offered a tall juco wr today. Seems like a curious offer to make, unless theyre looking to replace JV. Wonder if something more is up with jv other than poor production this year?

      • Really tough as a wideout to play well with QBs that don’t throw on time or accurately. When you do finally see a ball that is thrown when and where it should they are probably surprised. Definitely a mental thing but you see average receivers look great with a good QB, stands to reason good receivers can look bad with an average or bad QB.

        • When you do finally see a ball that is thrown when and where it should they are probably surprised.

Saying why a receiver loses focus is not a valid defense for a receiver losing focus. That maybe works on the intramural level, but not on the FCS+ levels.

Players make plays. Players who fail to make plays because it’s all about their victimhood don’t get to play.

  33. My Utah writeup was spot on, but change 300yards passing to 200 due to wind (when I wrote it didn’t know about that issue). Where’s angry@angry et al?

Washington game probably won’t be as bad as people think. My early feeling is something like 45-20.

  34. Just as a point of reassurance for folks.

We have 2 losses to ranked teams. Colorado should absolutely be ranked. Minnesota is a decent team and we took them to the wire. Despite all of the coaching slips, talent issues, etc we have reason to hope of the future. No team plays error free football in college. I am encouraged for the future by this. If the overall talent level improves some of these losses turn into wins. Not to mention some of our coaching tendencies may be good things when we have more talent on the roster.

Regarding QB: Lets not forget that Garretson has been clutch for this team with gritty play and well-timed pull downs. It is not his fault that the coaches call deep passing plays when he is limited. McM may turn out to be a better passer but craftiness is as important to the QB position as anything. We have all discussed that here, sure hope McM has it.

    • On the moral victory front: I’d much rather watch that than the Colorado game.

Also, beavs had 6 tfl vs Utahs 3.

Though, I’m worried garretson will be playing gimpy, and then what?

      • On the moral victory front:

We are good enough that we can make all the same mistakes and still beat the second best team in our conference… if we have a good QB.

One player could make a difference as soon as this year. If that doesn’t have you feeling giddy, I don’t know what would.

Now we have to suffer through the rest of the season not having that one player. Even if Moran will be that guy next year, why would we expect him to be that guy this year?

  35. Garretson seems like a nice kid, but on his best day he doesn’t throw well. A qb has a lot of responsibilities, and has to possess a lot of skills, the most important is throwing accurately to the right player

    • I disagree. The most important in our new system is game management, followed by misdirection.

Getting the ball to any open spaces downfield by run or pass is set up by those two first.

  36. “MEDICAL BULLETIN FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE”

Some dude in Santa Barbara a.k.a. “AngryBeav has been placed on the injured reserve list due a shoulder injury caused by excessive “self patting on the back.”

Defined in medical literature as “the shoulder joint is sub-laxed in a pronated posture and herniated in the anterior venus maximus conjection with the vena-medilla ligature with light bruising in the upper shoulder. yadda-yadda-yadda” AMA Journal May 12, 2014 Chap 12.

Rehabilitation usually occurs in intelligent people by; awareness or getting the next one wrong.

  37. here’s my take. QB play under Garretson has been improved over last year, or at least perceived to have improved under Garretson, but NOT because he’s a better passer. That seems to be now demonstrably untrue. Rather, Garretson is playing with a better line and more to the point he is MUCH better than Collins in making zone read decisions on whether to hand off, keep, etc. In that role Seth always seems to make the wrong read or was inclined to call his own number too much. I strongly agree with the new consensus that Anderson and his coaches have bungled the QB roster the last two years, starting with running Del Rio off. I went to a couple of those open scrimmages and he seemed quick footed and could get to the outside. He might not have been the greatest passer, but then, no one else has either.

        • let me re-state my idea: Del Rio was good enough of a “runner” to be credible in a read-option offense, which, if I’m not mistaken, is what Florida uses. the subsidiary point, pursuant to Angry’s “trust Riley’s choice in qb’s,” is that though an adequate “runner” he is s a better “thrower” than Seth, Garretson, McMaryon, etc. We’d be better off with him that we are without him

  38. Nebraska banned me from the boneyard:

“I made it only a few posts into this before I decided to go ahead and ban you for the duration of the season. You come over here purely to get a reaction. You have no interest in anything but that. It’s classic trolling.

Additionally, you link our competitors recruiting rankings. You say you don’t want to talk about the Beavers. All of this is indicative of a lack of respect and is unneeded. If you want to engage Nebraska fans, you’re welcome to do so on any other site, but you’re no longer welcome here.

    Thanks.”

Hahaha. I really wasn’t trolling them. The telecaster said Nebby fans were comparing Riley to Osborne, so I had to go over there and let them know the 2nd half of the season likely won’t go as well.
All the pay sites have such low tolerance. Paywall really encourages censorship. Gotta get those memberships!

    • I know it’s accepted dogma that burning red-shirts is a bad idea but I’ve never been convinced of it. it’s conceivable that some of the newcomers are better players that those ahead of them on the depth chart and besides which, any experience gained this year makes them better players next.

      • OK for some but at this point I only want one more redshirt burned at max and it is not Moran’s. McMaryion is fine for this year. We aren’t going bowling. Get Moran experience early on nonconference next year and get 4 good years out of him.

    • Eggers…
“From what we’ve seen so far from Garretson, McMaryion may be the most accurate thrower among the OSU signal-callers, and he has some experience running the Beaver spread attack.”

      That about sums it up.

  39. My thoughts on the new ‘Oregon State’ logo above the lockerrom entrance. Looked at on its own it is fine and would give a 8 out of 10. However, it detracts the eye enoufh from the beaver logo on the doors that was by itself the week before versus Cal. Thought as was it was nearly a 10 out of 10. Because of the whole area being slightly busy now I would have to give the new ‘Oregon State’ logo a 7 out of 10 in its total effect and the beaver logo on doors gets lowered to a 8.2 out of 10 because it now doesn’t stand out as crisp. Understand the intention was good and like them both on certain merits but the end result is not stronger than before. Just look at them separately and your eyes will be happier and be fine with it.

  40. the line vs. UW opened up this morning at 29. My mid-afternoon it was 31.5 and tonight 32.5. The line will approach 40 by Friday. As it is it’s the largest spread for UW vs. a conference opponent since 1994. Back to the dark ages.

    • Why would this be back to “dark ages”? The Beavers just battled a Top 25 team toe to toe. I would say the line is more a reality of the current situation. Huskies just beat the Ducks by 49 on the road and are looking like the class of the P-12. The Beavs have injuries to key players. It’s not a good match up for the Beavs right now, that’s about all it says about the line.

  41. The game grades from Phil Steele’s page has been updated. Here’s where all 128 teams stand.
As always, sorry that it doesn’t line up properly but posting that with alignment is about as easy as getting angry to post a topic that says everything in Beaver Nation’s 100% great (if you get the drift ;) ). ANYWAY…

  42. If you think McM is the best QB on the roster you must be the only one. When he came into the game I was thinking “man this guy sucks” only to have someone a few row behind me yell “oh not this guy” which got a chuckle from the entire crowd

    • What did you guys say about Garretson?

Last time you saw McM, he nearly led your team to a come from behind victory at Autzen, while half the roster watched from Corvallis. Not sure why he’d deserve that type of response

      • Can we stop with this bullshit narrative that McMaryion was the reason that OSU played well against Oregon last year? What made things effective that game:

        – Ryan Nall doing what Ryan Nall does best
        – Seth Collins being effectively utilized in a Wildcat role (something the current offensive play-callers can’t seem to figure out for whatever reason)
        – Oregon’s defense was really bad.

All that said, I still fully support him being the starter. The other options haven’t proven effective up to this point, he made a full decent throws at the end of the Utah game, so at this point, why not?

        • OK, didn’t lead in the stat department, but lead in the sense that he was under center in that game and that wasn’t the point of the post.
(plus, his Civil War stats weren’t terrible- I’d take a 7.3 average yard per attempt any day. Against Utah he average 8.4 yards per attempt)

          McMaryion stats from Civil War
          11 for 21 passing. 154 yards. 7.3 average. 0 TD 1 INT. Also had 1 rushing TD

          • I believe there was a big play dropped in that game, too. Can’t remember if it was that game since there were so many drops. I know McM should have had a TD in the first game he played but there was a drop there as well on a perfect ball/over the shoulder (think it was Villamin).

McM in the CW managed the game well. He played better than the numbers and looked the part.

Washington might sack him a lot and force turnovers, so then we’ll hear he stinks…the guy gets dealt bad draws and the coaches give him no rope. It’s poor treatment, tbh.

          • In the CW, the big play i remember that got dropped was Seth at receiver dropping a deep end zone throw from MCM, but the ducks bailed us out with a taunting penalty, which ultimately led to McMaryion’s rushing TD.

There could have been other drops though. that’s just the big one i remember.

    • The truth is, there is no QB on our roster who is good enough at all aspects to lead this team to a victory. And I’m including Moran in this because he is still too green. But it’s not just the QBs as others have pointed out. We don’t have any receivers who are good enough to catch poorly thrown balls. The only way this team wins another game is with defense and running the ball. And I mean everyone running the ball: Nall, Pierce, Cook, Lucas, Bolden, Collins, and whoever is taking the snap (maybe even Porebski).

      • I agree almost 100%.

Moran may be a wildcard at this point. His size doesn’t set up well for wear given how wily he would need to be as that too green player. So I would also bet against him being ready. But you just never know until you know.

Our identity is as a running team. And we’re getting to be pretty good at it. But we can’t just dump the passing game altogether. There were a couple plays where Utah lined up against us like they were coming to block a punt because they knew with the weather that we couldn’t pass and with the lead they didn’t need to.

I don’t care what your strength is or what the play call is when you step under center and see those type of formations. If you’re not calling an audible to try and take what they are giving you on a silver platter, then do you say you have a competitive bone in your body?

As soon as the wind died, we started taking advantage of Utah’s halftime adjustment. We just ran out of time.

        • Yeah, I understand using pass plays to set up the run and vice versa. But at this point I don’t think teams are too worried about our pass plays. They’ll likely just bring the house when it looks like we’re going to pass and scare the crap out of whatever QB we have in. There are teams out there who run it most of the time and there’s nothing you can do about it. I’d love to see us get there some day. I think we have the RBs for it, but I know our o-line is not quite to that level yet.

      • The book is still being written on McM and Moran. McMaryion is only a sophomore who’s thrown like 50 career balls. No way the book is closed.

Blount looked decent, but since he’s a walk-on there’s a lot of bias against him. He should get another look, though.

We can probably close the book on Garrettson.

        • I agree that MM didn’t get a fair shake last year. And I knew attrition would lead to him getting time again this year, one way or the other. I just don’t know if he can stay upright over several games. He does some cringe-worthy things when he pulls it down or is on the move.

          • Well, MM is finally going to get a real shot. He has to be the starter for the next several games unless we bring in a decent JC real soon or the coaches decide (incorrectly again) that Collins is still better than MM.

  43. Speaking of MR, Purdue just fired their head coach mid-season. I don’t know, maybe they will play inspired against Aw Schucks or it is probably another nice break for Biley. It’s a game NU should win easily but they layed a complete egg last year against the Boilermakers.

  44. California hit me with $60 in fines for driving on RT 73, some toll road that I had no idea was a toll road and had no signage. Fuck this State. The regulation here is oppressive. I’m moving up to Oregon.

      • at least one can still pump their own diesel. So Oregon has that going for it. Which is nice.

Yes I know what you’re thinking beavergopher

      • I don’t understand. I love not pumping my own gas. It’s a pain in the ass to get out of the car and pay and pump and wash my own windshield when all I want is gas.

    • Umm… I don’t think the Orange County toll roads are what you want to go after as some big brother thing. They are the shining model of what a private-public partnership should be. They are the result of the asshats who populate the OC wanting to enrich crony contractors on the public’s dime… without actually paying the taxes necessary for such a project… so they always say.

If you want a good chuckle, go look up Kiewit Corporation and read the name of their CEO.

Good luck finding much info on TCA, the real owner of those roads and the true bane of your mailbox.

They do need to make it clear that you are entering the road. I got caught in one with no turnaround. When I got to the gate, there was no place to pay the toll and no information available from a person or any signs. And it wasn’t like you could stop anywhere to figure out what was going on. Suffice it to say, I found out like you how a private corporation was gorging themselves on the public teat and further eroding what government once provided for a modest tax.

And then I went online and found out if you register with them they will reduce the fine to $9… and I will immediately request a new credit card from my bank… and look for the class action suit that certainly comes from this latest example of “I got mine” Capitalism.

  45. I’ve been hearing Mason Moran has not impressed in scout team work. I almost think the Beavers need to take 2 QBs in the next class. Not sure this Willard guy will be ready to compete right away. Should be instant playing time available if the staff can find a P5 level guy.

    • Willards mechanics are iffy and he has a low completion %.
I don’t like the signing. I could be wrong — there is limited film and people have made up excuses for his low completion %. Too many unknowns there. On film I see him running around a lot and he looks strong armed, almost like a Jake Locker (very light edition). So I get why GA might be intrigued, but I don’t think GA and crew can afford to speculate or take a project. So, for that reason I don’t like the signing and think we can do better. Maybe I’m wrong and we can’t do better. I’m not sure we’ll be able to add a quality Pac QB this late in the process. Are there any big names even on our radar?
We need to take 2 every cycle at this point until we get the position established.

    • They absolutely need a JUCO or graduate transfer QB. Otherwise all the other JUCO recruiting will be for naught. Expecting Moran (even if he is going to be good) to be the man as a redshirt Frosh is foolish and no way are Blount or Garrettson the guy.

I’ve heard nothing about JUCO QBs sadly.

      • One thing it seems like some keep forgetting is that Garrettson is just a junior. Given the staff’s love for him (or nepotism), what’s to keep him from winning the job as a senior next season? Can we say unequivocally that the staff will not be fine with DG, McM, Blount and Moran next season. That four QB’s for next season already. I wouldn’t put anything past this staff.

  46. I would like to see OSU going harder after John Bledsoe, he is committed to Northern Arizona but OSU has been in contact, he is one of the smartest high school QBs I’ve been around (no surprise given the pedigree) and given a couple years in the system I think he would make a quality college QB even at the PAC level. If I were OSU even if I wasn’t willing to offer a scholarship I’d be aggressive in talking him out of taking the scholarship from an FCS school and walk on at a PAC school. If he came to Corvallis I bet he’d start as a junior/senior. Not his dad by any means but he has the brains to play QB at any level, give him time to develop and he will make it in the PAC.

  47. I’ll post these questions/comments here since Angry took offense at my posting them on the new thread.

    1) Does Tim Cook have one more year of eligibility after this year (i.e. medical redshirt)?

    2) What about Tuli Wily-Matagi at QB? He doesn’t look all that bad as a QB in his highlight video. Is he redshirting this year?

Would it make more sense to start getting Tuli Wily-Matagi ready as the back-up and try not to burn Moran’s redshirt? Right now I’m thinking it would.

Who else do they have to be QB for the scout team?

    • Cook would have to apply for and be granted a medical hardship. That hasnt been determined yet as far as i know.
Seems like he should be eligible based on missing all of 2015 with that torn pectoral, but i dont know how the transfers and juco years play into his eligibility. He was originally class of 2012 so 2017 would be year 6 for him.

I think Matagi redshirted last year. He was class of 2015.
Matagi hasn’t taken any snaps at QB up to this point, at least according to the limited practice reports. Seems like Seth makes the most sense, and then move Bradford over to fill his WR opening. Bradford had 1 rush for 4 yards vs Boise but we havent seen him since. His redshirt is already off.

Blount was the scout team QB until he jumped to 2nd string. Then it would have been Moran or MCM. So now??
Maybe Moevao steps in for practice?

      • Probably Keeton.

Cook will be eligible for and will likely get the medical hardship

Wily-Matagi saved the first TD drive with a fumble recovery.

    • I believe Cook will know if he gets a medical after this season.

Wily-matagis HS stats aren’t great, but sounded like they were a run-first team with a new coach and an offensive identity crisis. I was thinking they could do something with him though, but Seth would be my first choice. His qb rating last year is as good as garretsons right now.

  48. Sucks what happened to darell because he was bound to have a break through game. Also sucks to lose Blount but personally thought McM was better than him. Maybe now our passing game is better?
