I finally had a few free moments to look where we’re at today.
We have a 2 star WR with zero other offers, and the guy who does have another offer (Cal) is now looking around, per this story (don’t click me; It’s the Oregonian). The other commit, Cory Stover, seems a solid commit but again has zero offers.
A few questions:
- Why are we going after what look like local, Plan B guys this early?
- How is it that a guy who just committed is now looking around? This has the Riley stench of “it’s a neat deal to explore your options” all over it.
- Is anyone excited about these guys? Are they program changing players at positions of need? I don’t see it. Just looks like more “meh” from the all-meh coaching staff.
I’ve been out of the fold a bit of late, but was surprised to see this is how poorly recruiting has been going.
Baseball thread up tomorrow or the next day.
First!!!
Depends upon which site you look at…Rivals has Stover and Hennessy at 3* while Scout has all 3 listed as 3* guys. Hennessy and Stover both have offers from CAL while Gould only has the OSU offer, but Gould is interested in other schools.
I’ve heard rumors around Nebraska that Scott Frost prefers to not have any early commits from anyone because then he has to work harder to keep them interested. It’s like a relationship, once you declare your a couple, then you have to work harder to get to know them without doing it too quickly; nor exposing your faults too quickly.
I think Frost is on to something. The other downside is you might wind up offering someone early who gets hurt or could have been had as a preferred walk-on. Now you’ve wasted a scholarship. But, that’s why he’s Frost and Jonathan Riley is Jonathan Riley.
Half kidding. I’m not super down on Smith just yet, but it’s trending that way.
Couple of thoughts…
It’s not even June yet and we have 3 verbal pledges. Normally we only have 1 or 2 by this point in the year. So it’s not abnormal for typical OSU recruiting (not saying typical is good, however)
Hennessey isn’t a plan B guy. We identified him pretty early and his dad was a Beav, so I think we have a strong chance to hold on to him, but other teams will want him as he gets more exposure. Gould and Stover are still relatively unknown too. Both good athletes who would be nice to keep in state, so I don’t necessarily think they’re a reach at this point. Smith appears to be making a concerted effort to make good on his pledge to recruit in state hard, and that may pay off in 2020 when the class will be one of the strongest the state has ever seen(maybe the best class overall)
Also, don’t read too much into Nemec’s reporting. If you ever listen to his podcast, he often approaches Oregon State recruits with questions like “Oregon State has you committed now….what are your plans if another school starts recruiting you?”
or “We all know Oregon State hasn’t been very good the last few years….what do you see with the new staff to make you think that is turning around?”
Often gives OSU backhanded compliments before asking the question. Feels like he’s baiting guys into looking elsewhere, so I’m not surprised by the quotes in his article.
2020 when the class will be one of the strongest the state has ever seen
Does this have anything to do with the post I wrote about demographics/housing? As CA families get priced out and move to OR (and other States), these States will suddenly have much better talent to recruit. This housing bubble 2.0 is going to have many ramifications. Red States might suddenly turn Blue as the CA/coastal exodus continues. It is atrocious monetary policy, but OSU might benefit from all this with a larger talent pool.
It’s possible. I’m an Oregon native living in Portland, and I feel like an outsider living in this city anymore, as most people moving into the neighborhoods around me are transplants. Also, the population is growing pretty rapidly. On the other hand, Portland in particular is becoming overpriced for most people considering moving in state. Maybe Californians can still buy here, but I don’t see the growth being sustainable at this rate.
Hennessey is a native I believe, as is Stover, but Gould is from Kansas.
In 2020, I haven’t really looked at the demographics of the guys who are considered top of the class, but you’d expect the talent to increase as the population grows in the area.
Texas might benefit the most in terms of recruiting. Huge base, and the #1 State for Californians who are priced out. Might see a massive Red State turn Blue, politically. The unspoken ramifications of our central bank blowing bubbles.
Yeah, African Americans fleeing CA are not moving to Oregon. They’re moving back to the SE, TX, or Las Vegas or AZ.
I’ve heard Oregon HS FB athletes and programs have just been catching up to the southern US with the year round focus on training. Thus, more athletes are prepared for CFB and getting noticed by scouts. And certainly population growth overall should lead to more talent in OR.
Why do they have to be African Americans that are moving? Whites, Polys, etc aren’t good at football?
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that AAs represent a disproportionately large percentage of P5 CFB athletes. Not sure if you are just trying to be PC or what.
Polynesians probably have the highest proportion of their population in the P5, but their population is so low, I doubt it would have too much impact in OR. Seems like they were 2 or 3 guys in last year’s big OR class.
As for whites, as mentioned just a growth in population overall should lead to increased recruits.
It’s wikipedia so maybe there’s a better source.
During the 2005–2006 season, black males comprised 46.9 percent of NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and 58.9 percent of NCAA Division I basketball
They reference this article: Hawkins, Billy (2010). The New Plantation: Black Athletes, College Sports, and Predominantly White NCAA Institutions. New York: Palgrave Macmillan. p. 95
At the NFL level I think you’re right. But there are a lot of white linemen, QBs, RBs, S, and WRs in college.
I don’t really care about PC stuff so it’s not that. Just a weird comment because I never noticed a huge divide in college.
There’s no mass exodus out of California. The population has been growing on the same straight line for years. Still is.
All of it is untrue.
If you don’t know this by now, then you deserve the pity I bestow upon you daily.
Fucking Dumbshit….
He must just get away with his life because his shit is tireless and stupid beyond belief. I’m still scrunching my eyebrows at all the lies that they produce while they’re building on the lies.
He who’s first never dies of thirst.
This is such a Calvinistic circle-jerk… fellated by morons.
To put it mildly…
Suckers!
Sports is an escape. It’s a reason to be in school. The boredom and pettiness of high school is unbearable without at least a hobby (and dating), let alone a drive for a profession that might raise you above your economic class by birth. Blacks have been pigeon-holed by redlining and many other policies that subjugate them to stupidity borne of fear or racism or whatever for more than a century. It’s normal that the numbers say what they say if you know this.
Comfort breeds leisure. Leisure is not work. Work is required to be elite.
You can call it the “starving artist” theory, if you want.
It’s the same principle.
You make available targeted funds to everyone else, but you prioritize a certain segment of society as less than others for whatever reason. That segment suffers, but those who persevere will be held up as analogies of bootstraps and silly talk.
The early commits that you want are guys like Isaiah smalls. Guys who turn into recruiters themselves and help the staff keep the early commits together. Snowball effect. Of course the QB is the best recruit to get first!
Speaking of QBs, Paul Piferi was on campus visiting today and yesterday(i believe on his own dime)
He’s supposed to choose a school around June 10th. There will likely be some updates on the visit from Lucas over at BuildingTheDam in the near future.
Should see some visit pics posted soon…
https://twitter.com/lucas_aguilar27/status/1001615096890585088?s=19
That Tweet makes it sound luke warm. I don’t think we get him.
I had a brief conversation with Lucas, he’ll have a full writeup later. Sounds like Piferi was really impressed though. I’ll link the article later, whenever he posts it
Angry, I don’t remember if you were in on the Michael Johnson discussion a week or so ago. If not, he’s the son of a UO coach that is a 4* dual threat QB that for unknown reasons has cooled on UO and is trying to reach out to OSU. He and his family have ties to OSU and he knows Riley. I watched his tape a little and he’s nothing special to my eye but I still think he’s worth a visit/offer. If you get a second have a look at his film and give an opinion.
I missed that discussion.
From what I see on tape, great runner, pretty good passer who needs work in that regard. I’d take him in a heartbeat and think the 4-star tag is warranted given his wheels and adequate passing skills.
Yeah that’s pretty much where I landed. Looks like a really good athlete, be up front with him about the offense that will be run and what would be expected of him. He can run already, but if he wants to learn how to pass and run a real offense it might be an opportunity for him.
Correct Texas is where most of us ( Cali residents) are moving. My company (Toyota) officially moved head quarters there at the beginning of the year and took a lot of people with them and many other companies form here previously or are planning to follow suit. The amount of house my former co-workers that made the move got was astonishing and this is all for being just outside of Dallas ( Plano)
Wifey was adamant about staying in Cali and we had just bought our first house when the move was announced a few years back. Otherwise i was strongly considering a move. Arizona and Texas are getting the bulk of Cali transplants at least as I’ve seen anecdotally.
Nevada, too.
Texas, AZ, OR, NV are the big ones. Washington, Utah, and Colorado are getting a decent amount, too. As Beavergopher said, “Californians ruining yet another State” when I moved…very true. Not welcome here at all by the natives. Bump into so many CA people here….heard the State completely changed in the past 10 years.
Thanks, Federal Reserve.
https://medium.com/ca-rising/the-great-migration-myth-bda59595dfa2
there’s a lot of bay area people in Bend. People tend to blame San Francisco’s poor planning (not willing to build high rises. You gotta pack em in a go high) over the federal reserve.
That’s because people don’t understand economics. People also blamed spirits and animals for lack of rain.
I think they’re looking at it as a low supply, high demand kind of thing.
Right, that is happening, but it’s a symptom and people should ask the cause, which is clearly artificially low interest rates.
I had to stop and take a sip of some liquid first, but you owe me a new keyboard.
To end any funny stuff, the demarcation point is always Prop 13.
Every regression, no matter its bias, will halt on that point.
I think you should look into pension leakage. And not just the Taft-Hartley funds, which have received more than enough press from the goldbugs and their scaredy ilk. 401k leakage is in a bubble.
There’s people dropping huge wads of cash on houses in Bend who don’t give a rats tush about interest rates.
Those folks who are buying in Bend w/o giving a “rats tush” about interest rates are doing so with the proceeds from their home elsewhere which was bought by someone who did care about interest rates.
Sure. So they bought a house for $600k instead of $520k because of lower interest rates. I think supply and demand drives the price more than interest rates.
While interest rates are neat and all, people buy houses because they have the capital to do so. And it’s the most real asset you can hold. In times of deregulation, there is speculation. Speculation means corporations (and foreign entities) gobble up existing inventory. Inflation ensues, and people find value in cashing out.
Capital gains forgiveness is a more pressing issue than rates this year… that, and the downturn hit a false floor because of TARP. It should have dropped another 30% because of the policies set forth by 43 and the 2001 and 2005 Congresses… and Greenspan’s complete deregulation masked as self-regulation… whatever that is.
It is interesting that I can’t liquidate an equity without selling my newest holdings. That rule is shit. I should be able to sell whatever I have on hand.
No?
Trumpworld stinks like a dry swamp… dry, crusty and spongy. You know the drill.
OT somewhat: I was checking my bookie website to see if anything is up re: CWS odds (not yet). We are however 38 point underdogs at Ohio State next year…
38? That’s all? What optimism!
No, they are all coming to Missoula and Bozeman.
And some on the coast..l
We are all in Bend
Speaking of, where is CJ? Asked him to pick up a guitar for me in Bend and he disappeared!
I heard he got himself a sweet new guitar. For free.
That’s funny.
I did ‘t get an official “get it for me” from you that I recall.
Let me know who and where and provide contact info and I will get on it.
Hey there he is. Did you get the email I sent you? I sent it to the email addy you used to sign up for this site. Let me know if I should use another, or write me at mine (the contact button on right).
What kind of guitar? (I get geeky on that stuff)
I still have not received your email(s).
I sent you one from the account I used to send ab a donation.
Angry is actually a Nigerian Prince. We’ve all been had!!
Useless trivia. My Brother-in-law is a professor of English Folklore at the school in Nacatoches, Louisiana home of our first regional opponent. In this town they filmed the movie, “Steel Magnolias.” Quaint tree lined streets. My impression is the school is so small I don’t know how they can have a D1 baseball team. Of course St. Mary’s in Morago, CA where my stepfather taught chemistry is probably similar in size and they have D1 baseball and basketball.
“My Brother-in-law is a professor of English Folklore at the school in Nacatoches, Louisiana home of our first regional opponent.”
This is hilarious considering a few of the comments from the previous thread labeling those from Louisiana as uneducated.
I just can’t let this go.
Besides the fact that the analogy is simply a troll job, I’m trying to figure out what it would do to prove whatever you think is being proven here.
Is it that people in Louisiana are so intelligent that they can major in some obscure language arts program and find employment within that industry?
That would be impressive.
If you can’t figure it out from the OP’s post, maybe your dumbass SHOULD let it go.
If you can’t see it then you definitely aren’t as smart as you think you are.
But who am I kidding. You can’t let anything go. Dumbass
Cool.
So your reference to the previous thread and weird conclusion are moot.
That’s a neat deal.
There’s nothing else in your post, unless you’ve edited it. So there’s nothing to be held.
Your post referring to a previous thread is all about the OP on this thread, and THAT’S THAT!!!!
Good to know.
Oregon gets beat by Louisiana in graduation rates. Who’s the dummy now.
Oregon State for bringing back Riley.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=%23&ved=0ahUKEwjGs7rb8K3bAhUD7lMKHRwRAJEQwqsBCC4wAQ&usg=AOvVaw0VTJzWxrN8ZFOD4xbU2nov
The dummy is the one who can’t point to Oregon on a map.
If that coincides with Oregon high school kids who can’t graduate, so be it. I think we were talking about someone in Louisiana who ostensibly has a college degree.
So… Oregon kids who can’t graduate from high school versus Louisiana professional with a BS from a Florida college (because he couldn’t graduate from a Louisiana college)…
Where are we setting the bar for dummy-ville? Are we still on the part about not being able to read a simple map?
Also, homeschooling and GED percentages skew your numbers.
Most college kids these days can’t read maps. Without a phone and GPS, they are literally lost.
https://goo.gl/images/4iYNHD
I’m confused.
What does a phone and GPS do for them if all it does is show them a map… that they can’t read?
Jack, actually makes a valid point,
Siri tells them where to go. Not really that confusing.
These days? I’m 48 and I wasn’t exactly surrounded by geography wizards when I was growing up.
It’s still not that way.
But it does get you out of playing board games with people who think it’s fun if you’re not trying to win. It’s amazing how many people think you’re cheating at Trivial Pursuit (or trivia-whatever) when you just answer simple questions. It’s like who’s-it accusing me the other day of having some “inside info” on something, apparently not knowing that I have lived through five decades of something and can use a google machine to recall past news bits.
If you haven’t been exposed to the system lately, I’ll bet you’d be very surprised at the lengths to which Oregon high schools now go to see that graduation rates are improved.
Not that the quality of instruction is so much improved, just by providing myriad ways to make up for missed/failed classes. It’s amazing how little effort it now takes to graduate, only because administrators next promotion depends, in small part, on improving the grad rate.
Now, GET OFF MY LAWN!
Oregon’s latest antics to increase the grad rate have been increased bi-lingual instruction and increased spending on disabled and homeless students.
Silly Oregon!
It is kinda funny how backward the state was given how the world thinks of us now. Whitey-world was so hillbilly that it didn’t even know it was hillbilly. It’s what made the state prime for what you all can call gentrification… or what some of you are whining about.
Plant your flowers, and you’ll grow a pearl.
Beaverkman messaged me regarding a possible bracket challenge for the baseball tournament. It doesn’t look like ESPN has anything similar to what they do for basketball, but I did find this one on the D1Baseball site. Might be worth signing up if you have a little spare time. Looks like it’s free and there is the potential to win a cash prize if you’re really good.
https://bracket-challenge.d1baseball.com/
I’ve gone ahead and created a group for users from this site.
Groupname = AngryBeavs.com
It might require me to add players via email invite. If you have trouble joining the group, go ahead and send me a request to be added at beavrecruiting@gmail.com (to keep your email private) and I’ll add you to the invite list.
Regarding the Beavs draw. I am concerned with LSU even though they had a substandard year.
They have a talented roster and are playing pretty well now.
They will certainly not be intimidated by Goss or the Beavs. Beat em last year.
They have a culture and expectation of greatness. The belive they will win which is half the battle sometimes.
The reliever that throws 175mph is back. Thankfully he won’t have Greg Street helping him.
The NCAA sent them to Corvallis as a poison pill.
Anybody know which hotel LSU will be using while in Corvallis? Time to get a few guys with an air compressor powered air horn in their pickup trucks to make some late night passes through the parking lot. I’d imagine the fire drill is going to be watched very closely wherever they stay.
We need to find out and post it all over Twitter.
Being that we’re Oregon State, somehow bad information will get out and some dipshit will pull the alarm on our own team’s hotel. I’m almost counting on it
Some interesting ideas on twitter. I like the snapchat one. That guy is on to something.
I doubt the home team is staying in a hotel.
Beavs athletic teams usually stay in Albany. It’s a good idea to stay in a hotel during postseason. Keeps players in check and focused on the games and school. Keeps outside distractions away.
Coaches dont want to take a chance of having some of the players show up hungover for an important game.
Interesting. Guess they decided it’s worth it, but sounds ridiculous to me. Wait for some LSU jackass to pull the alarm!
LSU is at the Hilton Garden Inn, and SDSU is at the new Marriott downtown
Any chance SDSU could defeat LSU?
Lundeberg seems to think so
Does anyone else think “well, Lundberg fucked her” anytime you see his name posted?
Yes. Every time.
https://youtu.be/SArqvkgkYU4
Hahaha thank God I’m not alone in this world!
I hear it in the slow-mo version.
Who?
Lundberg. You know, he was looking for TPS reports.
I know four Lundbergs, unless you want to talk about their families. Then I can’t tell you if I know 14 or more Lundbergs.
But then you’ll have to define what it is to know somebody… to know somebody… the way… that I…
What were we talking about?
https://youtu.be/F7SNEdjftno
Um…
I’m going to have you come in at 9 tomorrow.
Mmmkay?
Absolutely… It happens every year. SDSU has wins vs. Washington, Arizona, and Cal State Fullerton this year. They won’t be intimidated by LSU on a neutral field and will likely have the Goss fans behind them.
Yes, SDSU is a pretty decent team. LSU will have to work hard to beat them.
The GT government reporter pens the latest Luke story. Roasts Dr.Ray and the school, to a lesser extent local law enforcement.

Will this article change my view of what is right versus what the knee-jerks want for blood?

this article (and a very salient comment appended below it) get as close to the actual dynamic as has yet appeared in print
Biggest fail ever:

4000+ Americans dead because of negligence. The last time that happened, it was called war.
Is there a chance Jack is so old he’s typing in the wrong address? He believes he’s at some anti-republican blog?
Anti-Republican?
Last I checked, the Dems in power did just as much for deregulation of anything I’m talking about as the Reps did. They just negotiated positions of ostensible opposition. Or, in the case of a certain POTUS candidate in the last cycle, they empowered the Executive beyond Constitutional norms.
It’s politics.
There’s money.
Deregulation makes it all relative.
A 4 year-old can tell you that zero rules equals chaos. S/he may tell you that in ways other than speech, but it’s all real.
Service is service. When you serve the United States of America, you serve them.
Or… you’re a fraud, a failure or worse.
We’re alll well aware that the zero rules of this blog equals putting up with your chaos
Well put.
Now apply it to something other than a blog.
RIP: The Americans on FX.
Great series ends with an excellent final episode.
I the Americans back during season 1 but never got back into the later seasons. Keep hearing good things about it though. Guess I’ll need to go back and watch the remaining shows.
Just finished season 2 of Narcos on Netflix last week. Was much better than I had expected. One of the better shows I’ve seen. Season 3 so far isn’t anywhere near as good though, as they’ve basically changed out every lead character.
I hung on until they turned the daughter.
It became too disingenuous for me to believe at that point because of the way it was portrayed. It was well produced, though.
I believe they call that a “spoiler”
That was to seasons ago.
But point taken. I’ll withhold as best I can from here on.
Today’s the final day to sign up for the D1Baseball bracket challenge. So far we have only 5 people set up as part of the angrybeavs.com group.
If interested, take a few minutes to sign up and fill out a bracket.
You need to be invited to join the angrybeavs group, so send me a request at beavrecruiting@gmail.com and I’ll send an invite your way.
https://bracket-challenge.d1baseball.com/
Just watched the Piferi film. Looks like a mid level three star. A guy who will need to redshirt plus a year or two as backup before competing for the starting role. Accuracy is good, arm strength is adequate which is probably why he’s not ranked higher. QB before him is now at Purdue.
Smart kid. Several offers from ivy league schools. This is classic buy low, potential big return.
But a commit from him should not stop the staff from pursuing other QBs in this class.
All American teams being announced today. Looks like the beavs will be the only team in the regional with AAs.
Stetson placed 2 guys on baseball America’s first team. Pretty impressive.
Oh god, 9am at Ohio State

Score predictions? I’m going 65-10
It looks like tOSU typically keeps their non-con scores “down” in the 45-55 pt range early in the past few seasons, with the exception being a game against Bowling Green where they opened the season with 70+pts.
I’m going with 55-7
I’ll go with 52-6(FGs)
I think 66-7. This is one of the few chances the Big 10 has where they can knock the Pac 12 out of the playoff.
If I were Meyer, I would consider running up the score.
But, maybe the Beavs show a little bit a fight. I could also see it being only slightly worse than the Michigan game a few years back, something like 42-3.
I don’t think an Ohio State win over a bleh program with a new coach coming off a 1-11 season is exactly a conference-killing statement. That’s like USC beating up on Rutgers and saying that would kill the Big 10.
All I got say for this game is…Fuck you, Bob DeCarolis. Fuck you…you stupid piece of shit.
Riley could’ve nixed it.
It took Riley’s okay to make it happen.
This was supposed to be GAs step up to contender game.
In the imagined world of when GA was hired, GA would have a senior QB with a tenacious 3-4 defense coming to make statement in Columbus.
The preview would read, “After four years of improving from 2-10, the beavs who finished 8-5 last year, capped off with a bowl win led by senior starter Seth Collins, a true dual threat QB. Collins is expected to give Ohio State fits with his ability to make plays from nothing. Beavs defense under Kalani Sitake have stopped opponents in their tracks with a variety of looks and blitzes.”
stop it hurts
Respect the process.
Some game times have been announced:
tOSU 9 AM PST (11 AM CT) on ABC
Southern Utah 5 PM PST (7 PM CT) Pac-12 Networks
Nevada 4 PM PST (6 PM CT) ESPN 3
Civil War 1 PM PST (3 PM CT) FS1 (There better not be any Stock car racing this day!)
ABC?- – – luck-o-da-Beavs!
LSU’s #2 pitcher Ma’Khail Hilliard will be out this weekend per their coach. Another pitcher A.J. Labas started 10 games for them this year and he’ll be out too.
Mainieri “I think both Hilliard and Labas will be out this weekend… nothing structural, just fatigue” #LSU
Hilliard is not out. He’s scheduled as their Sunday guy right now.
Both SDSU and lsu are starting basically relievers in the first game. Could get pretty wild and deplete their bullpens. Both anticipating matching up with the beavs in the second game.
This is what happens when you get real cute in changing up who starts in the postseason. Beavs better not do that.
Bob Lundeberg @The_Real_Bob 57m57 minutes ago More
Pat Casey said OSU is deciding between Luke Heimlich and Bryce Fehmel for Friday’s game. Those are the only two candidates to start. #GoBeavs
Got a heads up about some visitors coming this weekend. Looking to confirm which ones I can share before I put names out. Couple of 2019 guys, a 2020 and a 2021, so far.
Does Eget get offered this weekend? Would we take any combo of him, Piferi, or Yellen?
I think he gets a conditional offer, where his ability to commit is contingent on what happens with Piferi.
Haven’t heard much lately about Yellen, so not sure where he fits in.
I would love to know what happens behind the scenes for Casey to go on Canzano’s show and be cordial with him. I wouldn’t think Casey forgives and forgets that easy.
I have a little football recruiting niblet to share. There was a 2018 DT, Niti Liu who was at one poimt verbally committed to UCLA, but decomitted before signing day. He had shown late interest in Boise State and OSU, but it appeared he was a little late to fit in either class as signing day arrived.
I think he was a coach Chad recruit originally, so the Boise St angle makes sense.
Anyway, it appears OSU is trying to beef up the DLine now, hosting JC DLineman Joey Noble this weekend. But don’t overlook the possibility of Niti Liu as a potential late addition to the 2018 class.
As always, keep recruiting niblets on Angrybeavs. I’m never surprised by how much of the Beavrecruiting/Angrybeavs content ends up behind the paywalls in other forums, but it doesn’t belong there.
