  1. Saw an interesting stat that since the start of the CWS, every year ending in 8 has been won by a West Coast team. Granted, most of those were SC in that stretch (48,58,68,78,98) but Fresno in 08 and Stanford in 88 also contributed.

  2. I’m stuck at work for this one, but the ninth inning should happen when I’m teaching this evening and I’m sure my students will understand if we stop to watch.

  3. Didn’t realize this Arkansas pitcher did so well vs Florida. Guess he’s pretty good?
Have to pray the ump isn’t helping him or squeezing us. If it’s that 2B ump I think we’re in trouble.

  4. First game so far I haven’t disagreed with the ball/strike calls (yet). Good sign. Maybe they put their best ump back there game 3.

    • Umpire is setting up on the inside half. Giving about a half a ball more on the outside corner. Pitchers can take advantage there.

  5. Feel like our guys just refuse to swing at the first pitch no matter how perfect it is. Then they start out behind the count immediately. Then swing and miss the second pitch and thier back’s against the wall. I understand the strategy to get the pitch count up, but they miss some easy opportunities.

    • With no numbers to support it, that has been my impression through the years. I recall a few years ago when they were playing Washington in Corvallis when Washington had that particularly obnoxious pitcher. He seemed to throw perfect first strikes every time and Beavs let the ball go by almost always.

  6. Madrigal 0-10. Nobody, and I mean Nobody, would have predicted this. We’re essentially playing without our two best lead-off hitters.

  7. Gotta hand it to Arkansas they do seem to have blown off yesterday’s disaster.
Thought they would be totally defeated but seem fine.

    • ESPN sucked for the last few days – had to watch it either in ‘ESPN spanish’ or the ‘ump cam’ view. Opted for the ump cam on Wednesday… But no options last night so rushed home and watched the most exciting Beaver finish in years – you just have to love these guys!

  8. Abel retires 14 in a row to close the t7.
Luke up in the pen; Casey believes in him but Casey hates to lose……will he gamble here? Will he need to?

    • Oh no. Why on earth…?
Maybe to make him feel like part of the title? Been pitching so badly I don’t see the need for the risk. Give him 1 batter at most.

    • I’ve got the feeling Casey wants to rub the nose of the jerks who looked for clicks rather than truth.
Still a big gamble w/o more insurance.

    • “Listen. Understand. That Terminator is out there. It can’t be reasoned with, it can’t be bargained with…it doesn’t feel pity of remorse or fear…and it absolutely will not stop.Ever. Until you are dead.”

  10. I’d like to take this opportunity to eat some crow and acknowledge how horrible my predictions about this baseball team were:

    1. Team would struggle to win 30 games from ump-jobbing and internal discord from Heimlich controversy – WRONG

    2. Team wouldn’t get far in the post-season because of horrible 3rd day and relief pitching – SOOOO WRONG

    3. Team would go 0-2 in CWS after losing to UNC in the opening round – WRONG (but sickeningly close)

I have to give it to Casey, the staff, and the players. They’re obviously talented, but they have so much more heart. Congratulations, Beavs :)

    *chew chew chew*

  11. My youngest was at the George Fox football camp today and told Chris Casey to wish his brother good luck tonight. Coach told him that he would pass that along and that he would love to call him and put him on the phone, but he was probably a little busy!

  12. I can’t believe they won it. I was so certain that it would be a loss yesterday, and this one was so easy. Absolutely two incredible games.

Also I have a bit of a crush on Abel right now, but with the exception of Arkansas fans, who doesn’t?

  13. K-ABEL put forth an incredible shut the “Arkansas faithful” up performance.

Some of you posting here need to re-read your early game posts…..:(

Adley tackling Kevin at the end and him ending up on the bottom of the pile was priceless.

    NATIONAL CHAMPS !!!!!

    -jz

  14. I want to get a Hog championship t-shirt for extra motivation. I can’t believe they were already getting those things made. LOL
PAC represented well this year. Does this mean the PAC can have 6 teams in next year?…..nevermind will worry about that next year.

    We are the champions!!!

  15. Coming back to beat UNC was the defining moment of this team. That told me they were going to win it all.

Abel should have at least got co MVP. He shouldnt throw again until fall ball after his heroics tonight. I’m sure he’s not feeling it tonight but he will over the next few days.

  16. ESPN article:

“It wasn’t always fun for Beavers coach Pat Casey as he watched Abel’s pitch count mount. Casey thought of going to the bullpen, but Abel wouldn’t hear of it.

“I said in the 7th let’s make a change and he said, ‘No way coach. I’m doing it easy, I feel good, everything’s coming out good,'” Casey said. “I said ‘Kevin, we’ve got to make a change,’ (and) he said I’m not coming out, so I said, ‘OK, you get (until) next guy gets on, you’re coming out.’ He just kept going. So, you know. hats off to that kid, he just competed his tail off.

  17. WOW!!! What a game, what a CWS run. Only twice has a team won 6 elimination games in a CWS … and its US! Record for most hits, most games in a row with 10 or more runs, and so on.

Coach in his postgame commented on Abel’s rise to his peak, not having control early in the season, etc.

What a team! A zillion kudos (whatever they are) and tons of props (which is ??) guys!!

  18. I am on record multiple times expecting the fix to be in, and seeing the results several times throughout the tourney to prove it. Casey had a great list of obvious calls he named off during the game 2 pregame.

But the guys made such an offensive run after the rain delay against UW that they wouldn’t be denied the finals. The finals were nearly ripped from them but the drop was all it took. Arky had no mojo and the Beavs are the best college team in history over a 2 year span and it is validated with a championship. This group will be tough to match for the balance and competitiveness and sheer talent top to bottom. Great team and great job by the coaches to keep them on a steady course. Amazing that they won when so many things were against them early in so many games.

I hope Luke can get a chance and just go play now.

Larnach may be in majors for October call ups if he keeps swinging like he is.

Madrigal is the consummate teammate and leader, class all around, future all-star in big leagues.

Rutschman is the top pick in the draft next year. He better take out a huge insurance policy right now.

The weekend rotation for next year looks tougher than this year already. Beavs may be back to Omaha in 2019.

Thank you to angrybeavs for giving me a place to rant my rational fears and irritation regarding genuine conspiracies of college sports at the hands of DIsney/ESPN/SEC/UMPs. It has been therapeutic and I thank you.

  19. Awww, I just saw the Razorback post game presser. The tears of unfathomable sadness doesn’t even begin to describe it.

  20. Well, fortunately Casey has plenty of bling to cover all those warts.

I really agree with much of what Angry says for football. I don’t agree with nearly as much on baseball. Baseball is a game of failure. A person who hits 35% of the time is a hall of Famer. Baseball is also a heavily mental game. Pat Casey is a great coach. He does his coaching at practice and gives his guys the ability to read and react in games. Sometimes it doesn’t work out and may even look silly, but they play a beautiful brand of baseball. If you apply football expectations to a baseball coach you are missing what baseball is.

Just my opinion. Go Beavs, National Champions!

  21. I posted comments here after Abel pitched vs.Stanford that he was Drew Rasmussen V2.0. Little did I know that it appears that he could be even better. I recall several comments questioning whether or not we had a Sunday guy and I commented that it was Abel. He will be our Friday night starter next season and this staff is going to be very, very good next season too. Great Job Beavs and a big FU to the Oregonian and all of the haters out there.

  22. Does anyone have access to a link of Mike Parker’s call of the last few outs? I’d love to hear his call on the radio. If you’ve got a link, I’d appreciate it.

  23. Key moment of the game IMO: Top of the 3rd, Abel has bases loaded with only one out, other pitchers warming up. If Abel allows a hit or walk, he almost certainly gets pulled, and who knows how the rest of the game unfolds? Instead, he strikes the next hog out and pops the third up to end the top of the inning. And after staying in, Abel retires the next 18 in a row. Incredible.

  24. I listened to the final strikeout on ESPN Radio, and they sounded so disappointed that OSU won. Screw them, OSU won this through and through, and deserved it.

    Go Beavs!

  25. That’ll do Beavs…………..

Kevin Abel? Fucking beast tonight. Casey was right when he said the kid’s got Friday night stuff as a freshman. His problem was between the ears. Looks like he figured it out.

    So many records broken…..

Arkansas was 42-0 when leading this year after 8 innings in game 2. They had not been shut out all year. They hit 98 home runs this year but ZERO vs the Beavs.

In a post after regionals were announced I called Arkansas a fucking fraud due to the fact they had played so few road games and their record in true road games was terrible. I did not expect them to make it this far. But they were one strike and misplayed foul ball from winning it all. That’s gotta eat at them and will for awhile. Tip of the cap to them tonight. They were absolutely worthy of being a champion.

Beavs went 6-1 vs the “mighty SEC” in the postseason. But we all know that “mighty” moniker is complete bullshit when that conference gets 11 of its 14 teams in the postseason.

Many of us thought (myself icluded) that the Beavs downfall in the postseason would be the lack of a third starter and lack of bullpen depth. Who’d a thunk that the bullpen would be the backbone of this Omaha run and with the exception of Abel, the starters were terrible?

This pitching staff is going to be fine for a few years. Eisert. Chamberlain. Abel. Mulholland. Maybe even Dylan Pearce. I’m sure I left out a few names.

Ride off into the sunset Madrigal. Grenier. Kwan. Anderson. Nobach. Gretler. Larnach. Luke. You guys ended each game and practice with “finish”. And finish you guys did. Much like Arkansas fans did tonight inside their sisters. You played like champions tonight and went out on top (much like Arkansas fans did on their sisters) as champions.

That is all for now. Whiskey is off to his annual summer gray bar hotel tour. See you AB degenerates in the fall.

    Go Beavs!!!!

          • I’m going to guess not many of you are even adult enough to have this conversation. It’s pretty obvious, given that I even have to pretend to Jacksplain any of it. I don’t expect stupid to just disappear from your minds. I understand what a lifetime of programming does to people. You hate things for no other reason than you were told to hate them.

            I get it.

You may one day get to the point where you forgive yourself for this stupidity. You may not believe you’re a puppet. You may know all this but not care.

Good luck to you in the next age, that where merit will matter.

  26. Our Gopher tailgating friends are hosting a Bama baseball player playing in the Northwoods League.
The wife had ordered some Bama stuff from Amazon to put in his room to make him feel at home.
MN nice. I’m going to send Jay some Beaver stickers to put on the fridge to remind him who actually is the king of CBB when he grabs a drink or some grub.

Looks like about half of Stanford’s roster will be playing out here.

    • Pat Casey mentioned fundraising in an Egger’s Tribune article a few days back and talked about right field expansion. He sort of mentioned that he did not want to lead the way with it. He also noted some crazy dollars spent at SEC schools…….Kentucky spent 50 million recently for baseball.

    • It feels weird for them to ask me to donate so they can improve the game day experience for a section I likely will never afford to use…
I’d be more gung ho about a plan to expand general capacity.

  27. Tuned into sport radio this morning a little. Nigel Burton had a nice lengthy update on the Beavs winning last night and gave the Beavs good coverage.
Switched over to 1080(the new station for duck broadcasts in Portland) and they have Andrew Nemec on talking up Oregon’s newest football verbal commitment as well as vegas oddsmakers putting oregon at around 6th best odds next year to win the NCAA mbb championship. No mention of beaver recruiting at all.
Sure, it could have beem bad timing on my part and maybe 1080 already gave baseball a ton of coverage before i tuned in, but does a verbal football commit and vegas odds even deserve a segment the day after a local team wins the championship?

  28. Morning after random musings –

Seeing Luke warming up got me real nervous. Was Casey trying to send him out on top? Risky move if it happened.

Team won’t have as much of a drop off next year as I thought. Losing 6 regulars in the lineup will hurt. Hard to say what the backups can do since they rarely got a chance to play. Top half of the PAC but probably not the conf title.

Recruiting is going to benefit massively. Casey can sell national championships and a future in the MLB vs turning pro immediately. Wonder if Dukart changes his mind and plays baseball instead.

Benny has some hops. Whoever was in there cleared the whole pile with the suit on. Pretty impressive.

Lots of positive articles out there.

Crazy how bad the finals were for Madrigal batting. Just couldn’t catch a break.

Adley getting a lot of love. It’ll be tough to repeat this year’s stats. I mean who could hit 400 in consecutive years. As long as he stays healthy, top 10 pick next year. Depending on how good the pitching parospects are, he could go #1.

    • They should be great next year. Chamberlain can start? If so he and Abel will dominate the league.

Casey said last night there are a ton of good players in the wings who just didn’t get a chance to play this year because of the starters. Couple that with the recruiting boost the title will bring, Adley being the new leader, and I can see winning the Conference easily.

    • I too didn’t really want to see Luke go in the game. Just would have made it too much of the story and take away from Abel and the rest of the team. He would have got booed like none other entering the game too.

      • Yeah I agree about Luke. Honestly, he had his chances to come out and shut em up but he folded each time. After Abel and Adley’s performances there’s no talk about Luke at all and I’m fine with that.

      • Think it’s appropriate to have the camera pan to one of the key guys whose talent and hard work helped get the team where they were, but I agree, he had no place playing in that game.

  29. Wooo! Squeaked by AngryBeaverFan1 by one point in the D1 Bracket Challenge with 99 points total to win the AngryBeavs group, and 99th place overall. Nicely done everyone :)

    GO BEAVS!

  30. Talking about next year. Tyler Malone looks like a 12-15 home run guy to me with enough at bats. He was too early a couple of times last night or he might have had four or five bombs in the CWS. Joe Casey has a sweet swing also from the little I saw of it. The stat that got my attention this season was that as a team they walked 115 times more than their opponents and struck out 158 times less. Can that be dupilcated?

  31. YOU GUYS ARE NOT GOING TO BELIEVE THIS.

I just got back from the Pioneer Square baseball championship celebration. After the ceremony, I made my way down and ended up finding Mike Parker. I took a pic with him and introduced myself as Scott, the Riley “fan” who calls in.

This is where it gets surreal.

As soon as I mentioned Riley, Parker said what he did to leave OSU this time was “indefensible” and “good riddance”.

Riley’s most vocal and ardent supporter in the past sounds like an angrybeav now. Maybe the aura of a real championship coach in Casey is pushing any thoughts of “but we’re just OSU and Riley is the best ever” out of nearby people’s heads!

    • Looks like Eggers might be the last hold out with his “Riley will most likely still have a place in the program” article. I mean screw that (I know Eggers has earned a lot of good grace), Riley is not needed as a consultant on any level. He burned down Nebraska and now gets to head coach again? I think he’s using Eggers to get his spin out there.

I don’t give a shit if he’s keeping his house in Corvallis. He can ride his bike around in circles the seven months out of the year he’s not coaching the next “new league that will be out of business in three years or less”. What would be truly funny is if this league sticks around long enough for Riley to actually be fired again for incompetence instead of the league folding.

      • He should be involved at his alma mater, Corvallis High School, instead. That institution could really use a positive influence like him.

  32. Drew Rasmussen not returning next year. Signed with the Brewers last week which he could do since he wasn’t on the team this year.

  33. In very Beaver athletics fashion, they cant figure out how they want to have the team enter the stadium now. Having to move their entry way balloons across the field now

  34. Unless I’m mistaken, looks like both crapzono’s rag and the Gazette Times are selling commemorative sports pages, Portland Tribune may also.

    Vote with your dollars boys!

  35. Season in review, off the top of my head highlights:

Madrigal was hitting nearly .500 when he was injured, Andy Armstrong hit over .300 filling in.
Freshmen pitchers were very talented and very inconsistent until about halfway through conference play.
Adley hit an inside the park home run for a walk-off win.
Utah steals signs and doesn’t care who knows it.
Fifth year seniors are special guys to have off the bench.
Kwan starting every game and taking pitches, fouling off pitches, and making another 9-10 pitch at bat
Any Larnach at bat is great theater.
Grenier in the field is a highlight waiting to happen, the under arm throw from deep in the hole back to Madrigal to turn 2.
Gretler always got the one additional hit to make the big inning after Larnach and Rutschman.
Zak Taylor is the toughest out in the 9 hole in the nation.
Nobach and his stretch run of production made the line-up nearly impossible to slow down.
Abel against LSU was the harbinger of good things to come.
Remember the shock of losing a home game to Fullerton in early March for the first loss of the year?
All attempts at undermining the team cohesion by JC, Oregonian, Kendall Rogers, BaseballAmerica, D1 baseball, SI, ESPN, New York Times and all others have failed. WInning is still the last word for what the intentions were since last June.
111-17-1 over a 2 year span is incredible.

I had long since conceded to the reality that this team would not be allowed to win it all, no matter what, and it nearly happened. But the rain delay, 3 run double by Adley, Malone’s 3 run homer, Taylor’s walk, dropped foul ball and Grenier’s hit, Larnach’s 2 run homer, Abel’s performance were all part of a larger mentality to not give up or give in and I admire this team and am thankful I had the opportunity to watch multiple games in person over the last few years. These guys are a magical group and likely should have been back to back champions given a fair shake.

Nonetheless, OSU 3 national titles in a major sport, UofO- 0 national titles in a major sport. What new sport will the Ducks begin now to take attention away from a truly great OSU accomplishment?

To Pat Casey, Pat Baley, and Nat Yeske- Well done and congratulations!! ”

It is a great accomplishment to lead well, but to also have such a rare group of guys who willingly yield themselves to such leadership and succeed as a result. Awesome program, awesome staff, awesome brotherhood among the guys!

    • I was listening to an ESPN radio show this morning, I think they predicted UCLA in the CWS next year, the commentator said they were loaded. I think Florida was their other pick. They said OSU would be good, but nothing like this year.

      • As much of an ass as Meggs is, he’s been good for the beavs overall. Planted a nice chip on the team’s shoulder with The Snub which helped the 56-6 run last year, provided a series win this year, and provided one of our CWS wins, too. I’ll complain about the intentions, but I won’t complain about the results!

        Still a jackass

        • “I’ll complain about the intentions, but I won’t complain about the results!”

          Well said, scotty.
Meggs did have some nice things to say about the Beavs this post season, but…STILL A JACKASS

        • I was looking at past Beav baseball records for shits and giggles and I still to this day cannot get over the fact that the third place team in the P-12 with 35 fucking wins and 16 games over ,500 did not get into the tournament.

I know Utah screwed things up by winning the conference, but when we have to stomach 10 SEC or 8 ACC teams every year, it still pisses me off!!!!! P-12 baseball is not fucking Conference USA or something.

        • Yeah, wonder how team 2019 will do without the 2-year shoulder chip – not many players leftover from 2016. They won’t have the Luke situation, either.

    • Pac-12 = 4
      SEC = 8

  36. Just got back from my commute to Omaha last night. My opinion on this next matter is perhaps a minority report but winning the title was almost anticlimactic after the epic come from behind rally in the 9th of Game 2.

That game is without a doubt my all time favorite moment as a Beav fan, noting that I became one in 1999. More particularly because of this: after Larnach struck out with the tying run on in the top of the 7th, the Arkansas fans in the right field bleachers started chanting “Trevor Sucks.” Stoically, he stared back in toward the infield while the abuse lasted all inning long. Same during the bottom of the eight. I was in the Beav section in the upper deck down the right field line and we could all hear it easily and just shook our heads and muttered about that classy fan base.

You can imagine the rest. After Trevor blasted a dagger in their direction in the top of the 9th our section started a “Tre-vor’s Awe-some” chant in their direction. For some it was their turn to stare directly ahead but I could see a few looking up at us wistfully as if to say “did we make that happen?”

  37. Thanks, good read. I remember an interview with Nick Madrigal when he said something like – you have to have the last out or you still haven’t beaten us. What a prophesy.

Haven’t hear anything good about Arkansas’s fan base. What was their reputation before the game with the Beavs.

I’ve tried contacting ESPN via email about their biases but the email form doesn’t work and I don’t twit.

  38. What a great week. Beavs win the championship in excellent fashion and mike riley is gone (for now). And according to scotty, mike parker has jumped off the riley shit wagon. The sun is shinning on beaver nation.

  39. Saw a guy wearing an Oregon Baseball shirt today. Considered trolling him by acting confused and saying “hey, do the ducks seriously have a baseball team? I thought only Oregon State had a baseball team.”

    Wasted opportunity.

Also, never seen the Beaver store in Portland so busy before!

  40. Why I like Warts:
Here’s Casey’s response to “A few national media members, including Dan Patrick and Keith Law, criticizing OSU for allowing Abel deliver 247 pitches in a six-day span.”:

Casey said he had “no response” to the pitch count critics.

“He threw easy and he never had any stress issues whatsoever,” Casey said. “That stuff usually comes from the fact that someone doesn’t want to see us win.”

From Lundeberg’s piece on Abel and the bullpen excelling in Omaha.
    https://www.gazettetimes.com/sports/beavers-sports/baseball/osu-baseball-abel-bullpen-excel-in-omaha/article_55a2100f-c881-5536-bb30-04c95ad7abe9.html

    • The Dan Patrick? Usually his head is so far up the ass of the latest sports celebrity that I find it hard to believe he would notice the Beavs and lowly college baseball. Did ESPN/SEC call in a favor or something (assuming they are on speaking terms)?

    • Why isn’t Keith Law bitching to the NCAA for having their 3 game world series finale just a couple of days after the previous round?

  41. OT: Thank goodness OSU decided to not let Riley keep a position here while he’s coaching San Antonio.

He’s abandoned us three times now, yet there are probably still old guard members that would take him back for a fourth.

      • And I don’t care if he never loses ever.

He’s not my coach after he ditches my team once, let alone two or three times.

But you all can go ahead and revise the meaning of team to conform to your sycophancy.

  42. “In 7 games vs SEC opponents @BeaverBaseball outscored them 54-12 and out hit them 80-33 #GoBeavs”

From a tweet by Zack Lassiter, nice to see someone near the top of the Athletic Dept who gets it, and doesn’t hesitate to say so!

  43. Oregonian being inaccurate again about downtown Portland rally. Initial reports were accurate of more than 2000. Now they are halving it and one reporter is using “more than 1000” and then Goe linking to that as a hyperlink title as well. I was at both 2006 and 2018 downtown rallies. I have heard reported an estimated 10K were at the 2006 rally which seems high. This rally was a bit less from what I noticed but was most definitely over 2000 in attendance. I would say 2200-2500 for the earlier moments after the team arrived and first intros. About 30-35 minutes later it was down to 1900-2000 but many people got there at 12 and the team coming on stage happened around 12:55. People taking lunch breaks had to begin their way back to the office. This inaccurate represention by the Oregonian sounds like it was taken at the exact moment they said their goodbye which is like taking attendance when the game ends. Just stupid.

  44. Thinking lineup for next year

    Preston Jones CF
    Andy Armstrong SS
    Tyler Malone 1B
    Adley Rutschman C
    Zak Taylor 3B
    Joe Casey LF
    Troy Claunch DH
    Kyler McMahan 2B
    Zach Clayton RF

    Starting Pitchers: Abel, Fehmel, Chamberlain

Wonder if Christian Chamberlain could become our center fielder slash closer. Also some seem to think Beau Phillip could come in and start at SS. Also if Jake Dukart decides to play baseball it sounds like he would start at SS.

  45. Remember “Battlin’ Max Gordon”? Whether you’ve heard the story before or not, worth a read.

“…During those 8 months I got a severe case of fuck everyone, I’m going to do something crazy. So I went to Oregon state and walked into coach Pat Casey’s office and spilled my story, hoping a chance to walk on would present itself…”

And, check Pat Bailey’s twitter response: “Stud on the field. More important, stud in life…Love you buddy and I am very proud of who you are today- watch your mouth!

  46. I previously posted this as a comment above, but I figured it warranted its own post. I live in Fayetteville and the Arkansas fans were so obnoxious and insufferable. I loved seeing that bar instantly go silent after that foul ball dropped. I’ve never seen so much sadness and anger in a room.

    • Major bonehead play, but I feel bad for him. That same play happens at pretty much any other point in any other of the games, and it’s not a big deal, but now it is basically all he’ll be remembered for by most. Sports are cruel, but death threats over them are ten times more boneheaded than that play.

I’m not quite sure why this is considered a “classy” interview. He blamed the difficulty of the play and tried to disperse blame among more than just himself… all without really owning the play.

But they would not have been in the CWS without his play at certain times this season. So it is fair to plead that people remember the season as a whole, not just one play.

However, I don’t feel sorry for him. He was the leader of the potty mouth brigade for Arky. Granted, it was borne of ignorance derived from the O’s negligent “reporting.” So I can forgive them their ignorance. But I can’t really forgive them for how they demonstrated their ignorance… for now.

And I see parallels between being so stubborn and hateful wrt said ignorance and being so stubborn about wanting all the glory of the last out, to the point he abandoned his team in the moment.

I’m not saying he and his team deserved their fate. But it was noticeable that they lacked the focus to win that series, as opposed to the Beavs just trying to give it away with a lesser focus over two games.

      • One could say that the Beavs only spent two of the first 18 innings with lesser focus. But that were enough to hand the series to an inferior team.

  47. In the way too early look for next year, it figures to be a middle of the pack team. Lots of talent, but lots of inexperience too. If pitching can be really good, they can be in the up 3-4 in the PAC12.

After solid post season performances, pitching looks to be a strength next year. All three weekend spots should be decided now. Abel, Fehmel and Chamberlain with Gambrell and Britton looking like the weekday guys. Hopefully some of the guys who were buried on the depth chart this year can step up and contribute. Would be nice to be less reliant on the same guys.

Hitting is going to take a major dropoff. Just can’t replace all those guys, even in aggregate. Position battles will be pretty intense with all but C and 1B up for grabs. Incoming freshman are going to get opportunities to play.

Defense will take a hit too. Can’t replicate what Grenier, Madrigal and Kwan provided up the middle. Will lose a few games because of defense.

The 2007 team went 38-17 in the reg season after winning the prior year. and the 2008 team went 28-24. Both had losing conference records.

It’s hard to see repeating but the team should have enough talent to get to the postseason. PAC12 will probably be top heavy next year. 3-4 teams contending and the rest.

    Leading contenders for positions –
    C – Rutschman
    1B – Taylor
    2B – Ober
    SS – McMahan
    3B – Armstrong
    OF – Jones
    OF – Casey
    OF – Malone

Not sure where Malone fits in the field, haven’t recall seeing him in the field. He’ll need to see the field if he wants to get drafted. Could definitely see freshman coming in and starting at any position.

Follow the freshman and underclassmen in their summer ball leagues to see who’s legit. They will be a big part of the team next year. Madrigal and Grenier tore up the WCL prior to their freshman year.

    • Those with 18+ game appearances this year were Rutschman, Taylor, Malone, Armstrong, Jones, Claunch, and Casey, and surprisingly those 7 accounted for 34% of all at bats and 36% of all homers, while batting an aggregate .322 so we may be better than you think on offense. Maybe not over .300 but if we’re at .280 or better we’ll probably be contending for the Pac title. With Verburg coming back our pitching is so deep, experienced and tested that our ERA could be better next year than this year. Malone plays 1st base and we’ve got a logjam there and only Armstrong in line for one of the 2B, SS, or 3B spots, so either Malone or Taylor would have to move probably to 3rd. SS looks to be the question mark and should be a tough competition for that spot. We could always have a 2008-type down year a-la Jorge Reyes but I blame 2008 mostly on those crappy Nike bats when they made us switch from demarini for a few years.

  48. In ten years what do you remember most about this team? Luke, Game 2 Error, Abel’s game 3 performance, or something else.

Looking back at 06/07 the things I remember most are:

    – 06′- Nickerson pitching performance, didn’t think we had that kind of horse this year, Abel proved me wrong.
-07′- Defense, Wong turned a double play where he was parallel to the ground, didn’t think I’d ever see a pair in college better than Wong/Barney, but Madrigal/Grenier were amazing.

    • Ten years from now the following players will/should be in MLB:
      * Madrigal
      * Larnach
      * Grenier
      * Rutschman
      * Heimlich

(Kwan, Gretler, Mulholland, Eisert are possibilities, too)

We’ll be looking back saying, “How did they get that much talent on one team?”

      • that’s basically what I was thinking too. I would remember how much 1st round talent was on this 2018 team. Abel could very easily end up a 1st rounder too. You never know if a guy like Chamberlain or Eisert continues to develop, he could be there too.

        • That’s a good point, the story line from 06/07 was how this team was built on regional talent and how the team over performed.

Now we a a legit national power that reloads vs rebuilds.

  49. Does anyone have a list of where OSU players/incoming freshman are playing summer ball? There isn’t an official news release from the university.

  50. New thread up. The twitter feed has been fixed, but it’s a little technical so some of you might have problems. Wrote up some instructions. This isn’t anything to do with AB but rather browsers integrating added tracking security.
