  1. Oregon State WR and DL coaches came from Hawaii. OL Brandon Kipper has also transferred from Hawaii. Will this give the Beavs a bit of an edge, knowing how the Rainbow Warriors prep for games as well as the coaches being able to know the Sr. WR for Hawaii’s weaknesses? Seems like there might be an edge there?

      • Coach Smith also mentioned exactly what I saw when I rewatched the game. The defense did not contain the edges and they were not sound on crashing down on the right gaps. Situational defensive calls are not fully there yet. There should be focus on assignments of gap assignment and containing the edges. Once that is done consistently, then we should be able to start focusing on the more complex things like blitzing the edges, stunting, etc. Until the basics are mastered, we should not be throwing complex assignments into the mix. that’s why it’s so important to start an opponent in the FCS or lower half of a Group of 5 like New Mexico State or Idaho Vandals, etc.

        • Not staying with your assigned gap, it seems to me, is a sign of trying to do too much. It doesn’t fit with angry’s well stated argument that the Beavs D suffers from the Bystander Effect.

Perhaps months of listening to last years poor numbers and trying to make good on preseason bravado (or sincere opinion?) is causing some players to try to do more than their assignment – the opposite of the Bystander Effect.

Some bystanders and others wanting to demonstrate improvement? No one answer for all.

Still, Beavs need at least one wild man to keep that chip on the shoulder and call for smart effort from the entire D. Any guesses as to who is likely to step up?

ADD: OK, I’ll give y’all my out of left field nomination…Champ Flemings. Give that lil sucker some one on one time with each D player and see if they come out on fire!

    • I would be careful doing that. If the Hawaii folks are monitoring the feed they could block folks from the page and thus blocking you from viewing the game. I agree it would be a blast to troll the shit out of them but ultimately they have all the power when it comes to viewing the game.

  2. The ducks are playing only on the Nike Myspace page or Phil Knight’s LinkedIn profile for the rest of the season!

The Cougars are exclusively being televised on PBS or via Morse code.

Our Hawaii Facebook page exposure isn’t so bad.

  3. Nicebeaver has posted the list of games for this weeks picks in the Beavrecruiting Pool.
Some difficult choices there, well, difficult for many, not for guys like Zen Beav or AKBeaver!

    • Great, as if our defense trying to survive for 3 downs wasn’t difficult enough. Hawaii likes to play 4 down football. Their QB is reckless with some of hos throws, bit our DBs aren’t good enough to take advantage. They’ll likely move the ball on is more easily than Ok State did.

On the other side, their defense isn’t very good, so we should be able to put up some points. Ball security will be important because their defenders like to fly in and try to create havoc rather than wrap guys up when they tackle. Our height with Hodgins and our TE should be an advantage, and our OLine shouldn’t have any trouble bullying their DLine. Also hope we’ll give them a steady dose of run plays to help keep their offense off the field.

      • Finally watched some of the Oklahoma State replay. Hawaii doesnt have a Chubba Hubbard or Tylan Wallace calibur of athlete on their offense, so I do have a little more faith in our defense coming into thos game. Hawaii’s OL is also much smaller than OkStates, so I’m hopeful our DL will have more success disrupting their offense.
The one player who kept coming up as the weakest link on our defense over and over, to me, was Omar Hicks(#10). I don’t think he made a successful defensive stop until the 4th quarter. He was always the guy playing out of position getting beaten in 1on1 situations, and his flailing arm tackles never brought a ball carrier down. Offensive player repeatedly put him on the turf as they ran by. He even tackled one of our own guys on an OK State scoring drive. We badly need to get Jalen Moore back to take his minutes if we want to have any success holding a team on a drive.

        • Some people called out Hicks-Onu in the game thread too. JSmith said Monday that Moore is still questionable for the Hawaii game.

Either Moore or Hamilcar Rashed were our highest graded defensive player last year, and it sounds like Addison Gumbs might be our best defensive player this year. What gets me is that Tibesar put Gumbs and Rashed at 1st and 2nd string at the same position. What the hell man, you gotta get both those guys on the field at the same time. And then hearing that we’ve got guys out of position all over the field, I’m looking right at Tibesar, because he can’t just get a free pass because of personnel anymore, maybe except for the D-Line.

Outside of Cal Poly this game will be our best betting line spread all year. If Tibesar can’t get his shit together and we get run out of the building then we’re staring 1-11 in the face. I compare it to the Nevada game last year, we have the ability to overpower them and we should win the damn game.

        • #10 is worse than pankey. I saw this same thing and mentioned it to my buddy, but good night he would dive and miss any time someone was close almost like he is either scared or has no business being division 1. Funny thing is he was the one saying they’re gonna feel his pain etc.. before the game and he looked like a freshman high schooler playing division 1 football players. Embarrassing

        • I guess old Hick-One couldn’t back it up. He’s the one who made the over-confident statements during camp.

Hopefully if Moore isn’t back within the next week or so he gets replaced by Cotton of Moku-Watson. Both are bigger and more athletic. Might as well get them expierence. Really Surprised Cotton isn’t getting more time yet. I thought coming out of high school he’d be starting by now.

        • >Omar Hicks(#10). I don’t think he made a successful defensive stop until the 4th quarter.

Must have had a hell of a 4th quarter then, he had 7 unassisted tackles for the game.

          • Did you see the tackle he was credited for on Ok States first drive, where Hubbard ran right by him and he flailed and touched Hubbard’s shoe while falling to the turf, and Hubbard ran another 10-15 yards but lost his footing and fell down just before reaching the end zone? I guess that is technically called a tackle, but….
It’s the 2nd play of this clip.
Keep watching the clip. Several times he’s seen moving the opposite direction of the play that develops and by the time he recovers he’s too far out of position to make a play.
I know, I’m piling on and there’s plenty of blame to go around. But on replay, his mistakes showed up as pretty consequential to allowing drives to be sustained after 1 or 2 good defensive stops.

            https://youtu.be/WmPv09oUeB4

          • His mistakes in the secondary might be more glaring because he is in the middle of the field. The more i watch, the more I see the corners playing out of position too. Defensive backs as a whole had a pretty bad game. Those 2 pass interference calls on seemingly uncatchable balls were killers.

    • I watched the Hawaii vs Arizona game and wow. Arizona’s D-line looks awful. The turnovers that Hawaii gave up we’re arrant throws and the fumbles were Hawaii players trying too hard to protect the ball. They tucked the ball into their bellies where players are taught to punch as they wrap
the opponents midsection. Also, Oregon State’s offensive line is a lot better than arizona’s Offensive line thanks to taking their offensive line coach. Running quarterback has to have a linebacker spy him. Also, Arizona played a lot of zone defense and Hawaii found the gaps and mismatch assignments just like Arizona was able to expose hawaii’s Zone defense. This game looks more favorable for the BEAVS the more I watch our game vs the Arizona game. We need to get the run game going to set up the passing game to stretch the Hawaii defense. I just hope the beavers don’t play down to the lower leve competition and then play at a higher level against better teams.

My new score prediction is Oregon State 45 Hawaii 31

  4. video of Tibs talking defense with the media after practice recently. I didn’t realize so much of the secondary is out or limited with injuries. heard him mention Moore of course, but also Manning and Dunn. And I think Morris was limited last week too. That’s alot of rotation guys that aren’t able to provide a whole lot currently.

    https://youtu.be/R3FTK8gKmgI

  5. Beavs better get to 2-1 with these next two games to keep people engaged for the Conference schedule.

I wish I had time to read up on Hawaii. What’s the consensus?

    • To me, our defense will be ok if we get at least 2-3 more guys playing significant rotation time in the secondary(Moore/Dunn/Morris/Manning) Warriors play with 4 WRs on the field most plays, so we need those extra bodies to cover them.

Hawaii plays 4 down football and they keep the offense moving, so there wont be much time for resting between plays.

Our offense should be able to bully their defense. Run the damn ball and milk the clock. Should be a high scoring game by both teams, so winning turnover margin will be really important. Don’t think we forced a single turnover against OkState.

      • interesting thing in Tibisar’s interview is I thought he said they play 3 downs not 4. I hope he goes back and looks at how many 4th downs Hawaii went for it instead of opting to punt.

    • 21 plays with five wideouts vs AZ!

Mtn West offensive player of the week, Cedric Byrd, of whom Sumlin said,

“He’s fast. I mean, really fast and he got deep on us more than a couple times and he’s got great quickness, he’s hard to tackle — he’s a good player — but they exploited us when we got into some man-to-man and he became the deep guy, I mean, he was running right by us, so he’s a good player,”

Beavs DB’s gonna have their hands full, pressure on the passer will be critical.

Hawaii HC doesn’t sound as salty (yet) as some expected:

Is Banker still allowed to hand jive on the sideline now that he isn’t a coordinator??

      • From what I saw, the Arizona defense was within 5-7 yards of the line of scrimmage where the beavers defense against Okie State was about 7-12 yards off the line of scrimmage. It will be interesting to see how many bubble screens or quick slants we allow vs. the deep ball. It seems the philosophy with our defense is don’t allow them to go deep on us, but keep everything in front of you. force them to beat you with the short pass/run game versus allowing the deep ball. Does anyone else see this or do you see something different than this?

  6. OT:

Through the generous gift from Vancouver, Wash., residents Lee and Connie Kearney, Oregon State Athletics has established its first endowed coaching position.

Half of a recent $6 million gift from the Kearneys is in honor of former Beaver baseball coach Pat Casey, and will create a permanent source of funding for Beaver Baseball.

$6 million and all without any nine year old girls in Pakistan sewing shoes!
    GO BEAVS!

      • If they didn’t prep it for winter by draining the gas/oil mixture, then they might want to consider switching to an electric or battery operated chainsaw minus the chain. It will save on paying for unused gas and maintenance fees.

  7. This game has scared me more than any other non-conference game. I don’t see the Beavs getting off the field again. I’m thinking bows go for 60+… say 62-38. Hope I’m wrong

    • Hawaii scares you more than Oklahoma State? I suppose with Hawaii you can’t pull the “but they’re a really good team, maybe things aren’t so bad” excuse if you lose.

      • Yeah, I knew Hawaii would be good this year but the perception of losing to them isn’t good. Losing to Okie St is expected. That said, I thought we had a chance to beat them. I don’t think we have a chance against Hawaii and they will try to embarrass us if they can.

  8. OT: has anyone seen the new UO license plate? It’s a lot better than the previous college plates. Apparently any organization can submit a design for a new Oregon DMV license plate. As expected OSU is lagging in the creative marketing department.

  9. I put spam software in placed, so if you get blocked let me know (just fill out the form).
Too many Russian bots – they’re trying to rig my predictions.

        • They sent spring game invites to a bunch of players around the country. The mailing list for whatever reason had a few players from Hawaii who were currently on the Hawaii roster. In addition, the addresses on file for those players were the University of Hawaii football offices.(derp, that should have been a dead giveaway to whoever addressed the envelopes)
It boils down to piss poor clerical errors. I dont think OSU was actively trying to poach players from Hawaii’s roster by sending them Spring game invites. But it looks bad either way.

  10. Eggers, in a piece on Tibesar, strays over to a discussion of a couple of Niner’s decisions vs the Pokes. He quibbles with goiing for a 2 pt conversion after scoring late in the first half, I actually think the right decision was made.

He criticizes the decision not to onsides kick after scoring to make it 52-36 with 1:19 left in the game. Here I think Eggers hits the mark when he says:

…Smith said the OSU coaches had discussed the possibility.

“Some of the logic was, we feel like we have a pretty decent onside kick scheme,” Smith said. “We weren’t ready to show it with the score where it was so late in the game.”

That makes little sense. Sure, it was unlikely Oregon State was going to come back to score two touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions to force overtime — but crazier things have happened. Seventy-nine seconds is plenty of time, and the Beavers had all three timeouts remaining.

If you don’t want to put your No. 1 onside kick scheme on display, go with No. 2, or 3, or 4. Anything. What do you have to lose? …

Other than that, the Tibesar stuff revealed nothing new as far as I could tell.

  11. Is there any upside to playing a non-bowl game in Hawaii?
I guess for recruiting purposes, it gives you a better chance to spend some time visiting players 1 on 1, and it might make your program attractive to players from the islands if you can say “you’ll play at least 1 game in your career back in front of your family”

But outside of that, how else do the Beavs benefit?

It costs more to make a trip to Hawaii than your average road trip, plus you need to spend an extra day there in order to give the team ample time to acclimate to the time change( i guess?)

Timezone change means our players will be starting their game at 9PM on their internal clock.

The tv coverage is garbage. Poor exposure for your team and the game is so late that most people won’t bother watching it.

You’re the road team P5 team, traveling to visit G5. You can guarantee the home team will be ready to give the P5 team their best shot in that scenario every time.

Lots of distractions in Hawaii for the road team. Road team will call it a business trip, but you know the temptation to be a tourist will be there.

There are very few positives I can see in playing this game for a team like Oregon State, that is trying to re-build their program.
If we’re playing G5 road games, I’d much rather go down to play a San Jose State, UNLV or New Mexico.

    • I’m sure that when they scheduled it they thought it would at least be a win. I could see if they decided to play an extra game because of traveling to hawaii allows you to I believe. Would be helpful to have opened up in week 0 with an fcs and be better ready for week 1.

    • When the fuck is Hawaii ever this good? Beavs can’t get a break, seem to get these teams when they are on the up and up. Louisville, Cincinnati, Penn State, Eastern Washington, Boise State, and now Hawaii. Beavs have become the bottom tier stepping stone teams use to get to the next level. I hate admitting it, but if we lose to Hawaii, we have no business beating anybody this year…..

    • There are only so many Mountain West teams to go around and Hawaii is one of them – not to mention as you said, it offers a unique recruiting opportunity. Some very good players have been dragged off the islands. Also telling potential recruits that that’s one of your trips…? See where I’m going there? Here’s the problem: the Beavers need to start playing like a Power 5 team. Until they do, this stepping stone problem you speak of is going to happen a lot. (remember everyone, this is Smith’s technical FIRST year… last year was Year Zero because of Gare Bear… and basically he was trying to make a four course meal out of canned dog food.)

      • They’re stupid not to schedule the extra game. Could be the difference between a bowl or not, and it gives inexperienced players more experience.

        • The extra bye week is more valuable. If you played 13 games you would be required to win 7. At this rate I think 3 might be a stretch (I hope I’m wrong) but I need to see way better play before my opinion changes.

  12. PHIL STEELE REPORT (WEEK 2):
    #95 Oregon State at #85 Hawai’i

This game is important to Hawai’i coach Rolovich as last year Oregon St was poaching his players and coaches with some transferring to Oregon St. These are two of the most experienced teams in the country with Hawai’i #4 on my Exp Chart and Oregon St #7. You would think Hawaii has a large edge on the islands with the long trip but they are just 4-9 ATS as a HF the last 4 years. Oregon St is 0-4 SU in road openers losing by 27 ppg and lost at Colorado St two years ago 58-27. The Beavers RB duo of Jermar Jefferson and Artavis Pierce should have success vs a Hawaii defense that allowed 4.9 ypg in 2018. Hawaii already beat a stronger Pac-12 foe (Arizona) at home with McDonald throwing for 378 yards but he also got benched late after 4 int’s and backup Corderio led two scoring drives. WR Byrd had 14-224 receiving with 4 TD’s. Oregon St let me down last week losing at home to Oklahoma St 52-36 (+14).

  13. Adley’s season is over, they lost in the playoffs. In the last game last night he had his team’s only 2 hits and also threw out a runner stealing but they lost 1-0 in 10 innings

  14. At least I picked SDSU in the CBS pool. I also took CU +3.5. so not sure I’m “wrong” since I picked them. I’ve picked every game right this week so far and 1st in the standings.

Many I hate Boulder/CU. The people in that town are trust fund assholes. Hard to decide which team to root for in that game.

  15. Always fun to see Cristobal go for it on 4th down rather than attempt the field goal while Herbert lets the pass sail over the receiver’s head. So far Herbert has been pretty off with his passing today.
