  1. We’ve seen this script many times before. The annual glimmer of hope game, Colorado last year, UCLA this year followed by the return to reality Utah, Oregon last year. This is not a great Cal just adequate, but they are more complete than the Beavs. I’ll go with low scoring 24-14 loss.

  2. I don’t want to get involved with the Luton is a retard or no debate other than to say that our o-line seems to be having some serious issues right now. Holy crap we are getting destroyed at the point if attack.

  3. How is it that every announcer pronounces Togiai’s name as “Tongiai”?

Every single game. Is there an invisible “n” that I’m not aware of?

  4. Gotta leave so I won’t be seeing the rest of the game, but that was a really good scoring drive. Getting AP some catches out of the backfield is going to be huge for beating Cal, and it looks like we’re trying to make that happen.

  5. Nice drive. Pretty positive they could sustain a drive like that against a Bears defense that hasn’t allowed many bog drives all year.

  6. Cal watched the Beavs film from last week and decided to play like that today.

Halftime adjustments will be huge today for both teams.

Cal’s defense is playing fast. Best way to beat speed is to run right at it and then run misdirection plays.

    • just a lazy throw. no other excuse for it. no touch on the short passes. like the INT last week; all he had to do was loft it but he fired it to the sideline, it was tipped, picked, returned for a TD

    • Frustrating they couldn’t do anything more than a 3 and out on that drive after capturing some momentum with their previous drive and the defense holding Cal on their drive.
Perfect opportunity to put some distance between us and Cal and Luton throws it away 3 straight times.
      Wasted opportunity

  7. Not a bad first half. Smith made good adjustments on offense after the first two awful series. Cal’s oline is pretty bad. Making Beav’s dline look really good.

    Halftime adjustments –
On offense – smash mouth football, dink and dunk down the field. Use short swing passes to complement the run game.

On defense – keep playing fast. Keep modster in the pocket. Stay in rush lanes and collapse the pocket. Don’t let him run. Make him win the game with his arm.

Just caught up and here’s what’s be got.

Offense: Luton is switching between dazed and confused and making good quick reads. Ball is being spread out more, possibly by play design with different 1/2 reads. AP looks great again and BJ has some nice runs. Kipper still hitting his quota.

Defense: Looks dominate. I have seen angry throwing bend but don’t break out there and I really agree now. Safties are playing back and keeping it in front of them (morris looks good too). More creative blitzing, Doug’s sack was poetry of a delayed lb blitz. Elu is a force today, sharp is having the game of his life and everything is cleaner with Roberts back. Overall we are man handling a bad offense which is really great to see. Modster is the most uncomfortable I have seen an opposing qb in 5+ years. Shout out to Grant (#3) for playing some pretty disciplined defense, his screen read really caught my eye.

    • Looked like pressure was the right move. As soon as they finished their halftime script we started blitzing from nickle and lb again.

  9. Highlight from Oklahoma’s game where the OU cheerleading team thought it would be a good idea to have live animals pulling a rickety covered wagon around the field, with cheerleaders riding in the wagon.
Animals make a sharp turn. Wagon can’t make the turn as the wheels get stuck in the turf. Wagon and cheerleaders sent tumbling across the turf. Fortunately no people or animals were injured.

  10. The ol’ running QB thing! Even Morris punching the ball out can’t stop conversion on 3rd and long.
JS should think, “Don’t I have a QB who can run??”

  11. 1
    2

okay. Cal within one TD. Ugly defensive series there. The game hangs in the balance with this next possession. If the Beavs move the ball and score, I predict they will win. If they don’t, a loss is virtually certain.

    • Penalties.
Cal scoring drive actually started with the penalty on Noah which killed Beavs drive, then penalties on the D side finished the sad job. Need a drive now for sure.

    • Not sure if 4 penalties of help and a shitty qb scramble that ended in a fumble recovery by a receiver qualifies as dominant offense. You might be right but we have 20 minutes of clock…alot of time to hanger a single drive on.

Defense could use a break though

    • I blame myself for saying the Beavs are daring Modster to throw, despite our thin secondary. Dunn has had a pretty bad day, giving up big plays or extending drives with penalties.

  12. Beavs D will show signs of being gassed because the there’s no offensive continuity for OSU. Then people will blame the D for giving up a lead in the second half.

    • that’s the key thing, Angry. Too many coaches, and fans for that matter, view a QB change up as a “football earthquake”; disruptive, QB controversy, locker room splits, etc. Actually, it’s simply an in-game adjustment when done well. Smith hasn’t grasped that yet

  13. Luton’s time to prove his doubters wrong. Can he put the offense on his fractured spine and carry them to victory in the 4th quarter?

  14. Good punt Rodriguez, way to read them, hold it up and sucker him into a fair catch at the 5. Good opportunity for the D to stuff them

  15. Luton is throwing the ball too high and hanging his WR/TE’s out to dry and getting lit up on those passes. Time to get Luton out. He’s rattled and won’t recover; it’s been that way all season long.

  16. With even a half assed qb we win this game. Luton just keeps missing and looks at 1 receiver only.
Can not understand why Smith can’t see this

  17. Off the let Luton play. Absolutely atrocious. Very poor coaching allowing him to keep playing. At the very least he is having a bad day. If he doesn’t pull Irish as well I will be pretty out off.

  18. 1
    2

It just is so frustrating to watch Luton suck so bad and probably cost us this game.
He doesn’t have what it takes to be a qb at this level. Angry called it and Luton is proving him right.
Why oh why can’t the coaching staff see it.

    • 2
      4

      Yep. “Screw the poseur leader.”
But remember: The Beav’s D is notorious for failure on final drives. They didn’t lose this game either way…more pressure and stops behind the line since probably the ’06 D.

    • Would be nice if we had a QB who could add the element of running the ball too, since we’re established the pass game isn’t working

  19. Angry, that prediction is looking pretty prophetic. You must not have known Hayes was going to be kicking and shorted us an extra pt.

  20. Who was that old beav who stuck his neck out and predicted a 3+ point Beav victory?
Someone go ahead and throw “bank it” wannabeav off the yacht!

  21. Nice win. Defense played great. The only bad thing is we have to bear another week of A@A, Chuck and Alum telling us how great Luton is.

  22. A lot of the ‘we’ll never win again’ posts didn’t age well.

There’s not a guaranteed win or a guaranteed loss left on the schedule.

    • 1
      1

As I said in the prior thread, there’s no transitive property in football, and every week is about matchup advantages/disadvantages.

  23. Offensive MVPs: AP/Baylor and run blocking. Hell the line even pass blocked well Luton just needs 10 seconds to throw it out of bounds if his #1 isn’t open.

Defensive MVPs: Riley Sharp was out of his mind, Avery Roberts made a huge impact, Elu was in the mix all day, Grant making his case after a bad injury last year (or was it spring?). Lots of good to pick from there! D won that game hands down.

Shout out to Weaver: he might be the highest motor player I have ever seen. He should be making big bucks soon.

      • For sure, I left him out because he had a typical game (guys awesome) and the rest all played better than normal. Can’t really have 5 defensive mvvps or I would lose all credibility!!

    • *Roberts 100% lives up to his star rating, dude is a beast.

*Really wish Gumbs didn’t go down.

*Sharp may be another example of a gamer. Watching him play tonight you have to wonder why he hasn’t been seeing the field. Another guy that doesn’t look special on paper but kills it on the field.

      • I had Sharp high in the recruiting ratings. He was an excellent looking TE before going on mission. It’s not a surprise he’s doing well. Slight surprise it took him this long to get on the field, but not really given Smith’s track record.

      • Sharps been in a bit but I think this game he was in for McCarran. He seems like a guy that has the size and intensity that allows for ‘viokemt’ play. I could see other players being more effective in practice but he has a gameday motor that I really like. Gumbs def hurts, he was very disruptive against okstate

  24. Keys to victory: a bend but don’t break D that didn’t break very often (admittedly against a limited offense) and those three THIRD down runs on the last drive.

      • I also noticed that Tibesar was out on the sideline today. I believe he was in the booth in the past. Perhaps it helps the D with him out there with them.

        • I did see him on sideline once this game, not sure if he was there full time. Orthodox approach, as I believe Bill recently pointed out, is for Coordinator to get the big picture from the booth. Sometimes a changeup is smart (lookin’ at you, JS).

  25. Would like to say that Smith is making coaching mistakes and being stubborn in keeping with
Luton but it also says a lot that he got this team to bounce back after the melt down last week.
    This team could have folded.

  26. Someone needs to paint the field and Reser purple and gold so that the Beavers play their best against Washington. I have no idea why we’re better away than home, but I’ll take it.

      • I’ll take road wins to start this turn around over all home game wins. 3 more wins to get to a bowl game with 5 games left to play. WAZZU, Arizona State, and Arizona are our biggest chances to get to a bowl game this year. 2/3 of those are on the road. So it’s possible if this trend keeps going! I’m riding the road win victory train!

Would like to say that Smith is making coaching mistakes and being stubborn in keeping with
Luton but it also says a lot that he got this team to bounce back after the melt down last week.
This team could have folded. But i so wish they would go with Gebbia

  28. Outside of some transfers our defense is pretty damn young. We could be looking good over the next couple years with these young guys as a base.

Anyone see a status on Shemar? I didn’t see him back after he limped off. Looked knee.

  29. I haven’t watched much ducks this year. I know their defense looks good but offense is sketchy. What matchup do you see with us that gives us a chance? Is it reliant on Gebbia starting?!?

    • Subject to change as I watch more of these teams, but that’s my feeling now. Ducks D is fast but not good. Their offense has picked up. Beavs could exploit them with a power run game. Would require a smart game plan that controls the clock. I’m not sure Luton is efficient enough in the short passing game to do what we need. That Herbert isn’t especially mobile factors in and helps. Disagree with the people saying Beavs get annihilated by the Ducks. Expect something like 42-31 that game, and if things go the Beavs way with turnovers they can win. I think Washington annihilates us. That’s an awful matchup. Could be Utah 2.0.

      • I buy both of those points. If ducks are flat and we bring the A game (and figure out how to score again) we could squeeze it.

Also agree that our A game against washington means we limp away sadly instead of a field burial.

All this Luton hate is ridiculous! So many of his throw-aways were under extreme and immediately pressure with good coverage down the field. His throw-aways are a HUGE area of improvement for him this year as last year he was taking big sacks left and right in these situations/or throwing picks. He has finally learned to live for another down. I actually have a working magic crystal ball that can show me alternate paths of reality, and out of curiosity I took a peak at what would have happened if Gebbia would have played the whole game. He completed a few more passes than Luton, but ended up throwing three picks under duress when he should have thrown it away, and we lost 31-28.. . .be careful what you wish for!

    • I mean sure thats nice but hes kinda a one trick pony. He hits his first read or he runs around for 10 seconds and throws it out of bounds.

    • 2
      2

Hate is a pretty strong word. Seems to me, absent a few emotional reactions, most here simply long for some mobility at QB and a little quicker decision making and consistency.

It’s been repeatedly recognized that Gebbia would undergo a learning curve; that’s gonna happen either this year or next (if his status doesn’t change). Glaring opportunities to get some of that learning out of the way have occurred over the season to date.

Can anyone seriously contend that, even with a poor O-line performance, Gebbia would take the same 6-15 yd sacks that Luton has? Mobility.

      • Not so sure, OOB (I’m probably an older OB). I take your points, but some of the comments I’ve read (no, I didn’t make notes) struck me as a bit over the top. Is it possible that the players (not as wise as us) believe in him and he’s the Alpha they want to follow? Could it be that JS recognizes that? Just a possibility.

        • A possibility indeed.
While it’s a part of being a fan, evaluating things like moxie and leadership from where we sit certainly is no exact science. Still, is it that far off the mark to evaluate based on the lack of mobility, inconsistency, and demonstrated body language which we DO see?

And even if those young ‘uns want to follow Luton, would it have been a detriment to have given Gebbia a few of the quarters when Luton was particularly ineffective?

Here is another possibility for you, maybe wannabeav (he’s old too) is correct when he says:
“Too many coaches, and fans for that matter, view a QB change up as a “football earthquake”; disruptive, QB controversy, locker room splits, etc. Actually, it’s simply an in-game adjustment when done well. Smith hasn’t grasped that yet.”

          • Thanks for your response — and good thoughtful points. I guess I just hate to see us bench warmers being too hard on the kids that are out there trying their best. I guess I’ve become more of a softie since the great grandkids started coming. Also we may not always be reading their body language correctly. Sometime body language, head shaking, etc. have to do with someone who is being really critical of himself, not others. I do agree, it would be good to see Gebbia get some time. On another topic, my qualifications for OB status would go back to my undergraduate days in the late 50’s watching Francis throwing and Bates defending from the (then) bleachers.

I can think of a handful of plays where Gebbia’s mobility would have gotten him to the line of scrimmage instead of a 7 yard loss. 2nd and 9-10 you can still have most of the play book open for a very reachable first down. 2nd and 17, predictability makes the offense 1-dimensional, especially with a sloth-like QB as is Luton. I don’t mind Luton inside the opponents 30 yard line, OSU is first in the league in scoring inside the red zone—gotta give home some credit for that. However, the coaches need to get better at recognizing when he’s clearly lost his mojo, and get Gebbia in there to kickstart the fucking offense.

  31. 6

I’ll just predict a 35-0 loss every week and not watch. Seemed to work today.

    You’re welcome.

    Luton still sucks

      • Don’t listen to angry, original assumptions when you set up the CBS pool were clear…….PAC12 primarily. Besides, he’s doing pretty well as things stand!

  32. I was thinking about how the defense played today. Tibs schemed very well and the players executed. Now I imagine when the defense has more talent. How fast they could play. A sign of a good defense is guys flying to the ball. Lots of gang tackling. Today was a glimpse of what the defense could become.

  33. 5

I cut the cord and lost PAC-12 Network so could only listen to the second half via tune-in on phone. Love Parker and whoever the other guy is. At one point the other guy was stating Luton’s expressions weren’t good and talked about poor attitude during that portion of the game. Which was my point with Luton days ago here that he is either hot or cold, hero or zero, man or boy. But glad he pulled his head together and Brave won.

    • The “other guy” is BIG JIM Wilson, OSU Hall of Famer. Former FB lineman and power hitter for Beavs Baseball. As far as I know, he is still teaching public High School in Vancouver.
He seems to be a straight shooter and knows what he is talking about. It’s a tossup as to whether he is better at FB or Baseball. I especially enjoy his gentlemanly manner of trying to educate Jon Warren during Spring Baseball games.

  34. Great win and good chatter on here today.

Anyone know why Fleming’s isn’t returning punts especially after seeing Irish struggle?

Also curious If anyone knows why Lindsey wasn’t in for some series Second half. He has been more sure handed and seems to find holes in zone d.

  35. Pac 12 Network was showing a replay of the 2016 Cal game. What do I see? Onu-Hicks blind-siding a defenseless punter downfield and getting a 15-yard penalty. He must have been on special teams back then. Good riddance!

  36. 1
    2

Without seeing the game, and only listening to the second half, it seems like:

Luton is still woefully inconsistent, can’t put two halves together against a DI defense. This team could very easily be 5-2 right now. I know that argument is old to some, but damn….5-2…that builds confidence, puts more people in Reser seats, helps recruiting….

There’s progress. Even against bad CAL back up QBs, 9 sacks (#9 on the last play of the game) and 13(?) TFLs means there’s consistent effort through the game, and individuals making plays. How long has it been since OSU put up those kinds of numbers in a league game? Land those JC defensive lineman, get 3 CBs, this becomes a D that can hold its own. Hope Hamilcar has another year of eligibility.

I was thinking they’d lose a winnable game – “This team doesn’t know how to win. There’s too many players too used to losing, and for those that want to win, when there’s adversity, they’re not resilient.” Then Pierce and Baylor showed otherwise.

Those Pierce and Baylor runs to sustain drives and take the lead were great to hear; nice calls, great running by those two. Morale and confidence builders. I can’t recall in their modern history Beavs having 3 RBs this good. Its so refreshing to see that kind of depth and execution from each.

    • On your RB point. The best threesome (lol) of my lifetime (30 yrs) is Ken Simonton, Patrick McCall and Antonio Battle. I would say they were probably about 10:1 in the heart to talent categories but they are the standard when talking next man up RB’s at OSU.

I would say JJ, AP and Baylor all have more talent than those three guys. JJ is hard to describe but he is incredibly effective and balanced. AP runs hard and is fast, not fast for a RB, fast for a football player. AP is probably the fastest RB we have ever had. Baylor looks to be a big fast bruiser with a few moves, kinda reminds me of a less punchy Blount sometimes, well see how he seasons.

To make the “we are better at RB than ever” argument even more locked in lets look at whose not playing. Calvin Tyler is a very serviceable back who could be the starter in other years. Kase Rogers saw some time last year, i have no feel for if he is any good but his size is impressive and if he got reps he could probably be a serviceable backup (I thought he changed positions in the spring?!?), Ta’Ron Madison is a big body with speed from tape, haven’t seen him much live but I suspect he is going to get some carries at OSU. Heck even Alfieri could have been in rotation some years.

So unrealistically I would say we have 4 guys who could be starting and 3 that could rotate in and be good for positive yardage. IDK how we keep all those guys here and not transferring (1 Sr, 5 So, 1 Fr) with the new rules but damn we have so many good backs.

      • That was one hell of a run by Baylor, and I agree that AP is getting there as one of the all time best.

And I’m with you I’ve been watching the Beavs since Erik Wilhelm days on KPTV channel 12, and Ken Simonton is hands down the baddest mother fucker to wear the orange and black. He would have rocked it in the NFL if he just had a better 40 time. Patrick MCCall was a bad ass too.

        • Ken was the absolute heart of it all. Guy just never let his legs stop and had no concept of giving up on a play. Honestly he was probably lucky to not get really hurt the way he ran with zero fear.

I think if he had played in the age of every game being on TV it would have been a different story. His highlight reel that’s available has a fraction of his incredible play. I have a very vivid memory of a DT picking him up in the air in a bear hug but didn’t get him over. Ken’s feet hit the ground again and he ran straight over the poor bastard for another 5 yards or so. I can still remember his legs churning in the air probably denting the guys ribs.

      • Did Ken Simonton, Patrick McCall and Antonio Battle play concurrently and share the ball? I honestly don’t know.

The other aspect of this I like is their mostly strategic and effective use (the strategic use could improve, Pierce at UH for example). But contrast Lindgren with Riley et al, they were more of a “one-ball one-back” kind of approach, and it worked with Bernard and Rodgers if/when they weren’t hurt. But then the drop off was greater. This staff is doing a much better job of using multiple backs and there’s no drop off per se, just a change in style or skill set.

Agree Pierce has game speed. His 80-yard TD runs at Ohio State proved that. I think a smart NFL team will get a value pick/free agent if they sign him.

I considered adding Calvin Tyler, just because the early assessments seem very positive.

The other things is that their combined ball security seems pretty good. Quizz Rodgers’ one “fumble” in his entire career was amazing, but these guys as a group seem to do a pretty good job.

        • I’m not sure if they all played in the same he but they did all play in the same season. I was like 8 so it’s all fuzzy but I remember Parker talking about us having 3 guys with 100 yard games or that the potential was there. If I had to guess it was Ken’s junior year where he was hurt for a few games.

        • I was just looking at times we had three capable backs. Nall, York and Woods would qualify maybe? So would Wright, Cole and Bernard though and that was a terrible rushing year.

  37. Eggers with a few tweets worth reading, mentions Odesimus Clarke, Jordan Whittley, and paints Luton as a leader as he reports:
@JakeLuton6’s message to team before game-winning drive: “Do your job. Everybody likes to get emotional, get yelling and whooping and hollering. That’s not going to win you games. You have to take a deep breath and focus on your job. Execute and do what you’re supposed to do.”

Yeah no shit! How about take 80% of the mustard off of those 5 yard passes!!!!! Pros make a living on those dink/dunk passes. You want a job in the NFL? Learn how to put some touch on the ball, and keep drives alive by getting back to the LOS — and stop shaking your head like there is nothing you could have done when you are responsible for a majority of the 7 yard sacks. It doesn’t have to be that way, get your head up and don’t look like you’ve quit on the drive (although I probably would when it’s 3rd and 28, or whatever the fuck he got himself into early in the game…..).

          • 2
            1

I blame the coaches more than Luton. Luton is what he is, and he seems to be OK on 2nd and 7-8-9 or fewer — he can manage medium passes if he gets his confidence going, but that’s a big IF — seemed like the offense found better rhythm with a run first mentality, even if the run was only 1-2 yards on 1st down, Luton went into 2nd down knowing he didn’t have to throw for 15+ yards. Coaches are slow to allow the workhorses do their job, RUN the damn ball on first down every drive when your QB clearly has lost his shit!!

          • Or perhaps the running backs took the part about “executing and doing what they are supposed to”– and did it. As long as he’s in there he’s supposed to lead, and it appears to me that’s what he was doing. He’s certainly got some flaws as a QB as has been pointed out many times on this site, but that doesn’t make everything he does bad. That’s a flaw on us. I can’t remember what it’s called but there is a tendency when someone makes some errors to automatically assume everything that person does is bad.

    • Notice Eggers response to an individual who says he’s curious to see a Beaver QB (i.e. an alternative to Luton) “who can extend plays back there”?

Eggers: “The Beavers coaches aren’t curious. They’re busy trying to win games.”

    • My favorite was when Roberts wiffed on a sack and managed to get a negative 2 yard run, “by some miracle modster turns that into a positive play”….sigh

      • PI call right before Cals first touchdown. He said something refs didn’t like. It was At least the second PI call on that drive. It gave cal about a yard or so since they were already close to the goal line. I was proud of Smith giving the refs an earful. Anyone know the penalty discrepancy?

        • Here is what Eggers reported re the flag on JS:
OSU sources said secondary coach Blue Adams was the one protesting. “I was the one to get the call,” Smith said. “The way it was going, offense, defense — I figured it was my turn to get a penalty. We were getting them on both sides.” Oregon State finished with 13 penalties for 102 yards. Cal drew two flags for 17 yards.

I liked Smith in that moment as well, after reading this I like Blue too.
BTW, Beavs season avg including Cal is 60.6 penalty yds/game, an acceptable figure overall IMHO.

    A few thoughts:

*Luton was wildly inconsistent and should have been pulled. He did make some nice checks but would throw it 5 ft above their head.
    *Brandel struggled simple as that.
*Kipper six! I dont get the hype other than his size he constantly gets beat or hold when he doesn’t false start.
    *Sharp can play!
*You have to admit Tibs D really can develop OLB. Losing Gumbs, Murray, Tago could have been bad but these other players have really stepped up.
*Irish is a weapon but if he cant catch put champ back there. The one would have probably bounced in the endzone.
*Sandberg is playing and looks like a pretty viable rotation player.
*Didn’t notice Clarke which is probably a good thing.
*9 sacks is awesome. How many did they have last year?
*Runningbacks continue to look good. The effort by Baylor to get in the endzone was great.

  39. 7
    2

A few thoughts based on the highlights:
-Sharp had a good game and looks like a solid tackler, something we definitely can’t take for granted. Imagine this guy was buried on the depth chart to start the year.

-Morris made some key plays at safety. We’ve missed having him back there.

-Kipper gets crap for his penalties, and rightfully so, but he had a key block on the GW drive that gave Pierce an easy 10-15 yard pickup and his pass blocking was solid. Hopefully he can cut the mental mistakes.

-After the GA years where his quitters mentality infected the team, it was great to see the guys battle back after giving up the lead late. Especially after some of the close losses we’ve had, that says a lot about the team’s leadership.

    • Also, Luton’s not good enough to win the P12 for us, but after seeing some of the QB’s P5 teams put out there, we could certainly do worse. He’s good enough for us to have a serviceable offense.

    • BIG JIM is still very high on Kipper, said he is an example of a guy who is learning every game he plays. I suspect JIM is a little disappointed in the number of mistakes Kipper made yesterday.

  40. Good team win. Huge having Moore and Morris and Roberts as well as Sharp in for defense. Thought Luton did good in the first half of spreading the ball around and check downs. Second half? Missing throws and granted a couple drops too. But he didn’t look comfortable out there. When he’s good he’s good, but his biggest flaw seems to be some inconsistency. Though Cal has one of the better secondary in the pac12

  41. Watched the game via DVR with my morning coffee.
Nice win and recovery from last week. Rodents both put a W for the second time this year. Almost a perfect football Sat.
Tibesar’s D looked much better, although Cal sucks on offense, so a little grain of salt. #56(Sharpe?) looks like one of his LB’s at Wisconsin.
Luton with some nice throws and some horrible ones.
I like the multiple formation concepts JS has been running. Under center, Pistol, and Shotgun. Lots of options.
Overall it shows that things are going in the right direction. Hopefully another win or two to allow them to sell hope to kids in the transfer portal.
Go Beavs and F Wisconsin. Please let the magic in Minneapolis continue!

  42. Didn’t realize Sharp is like 21 as a redhirt frosh. Nice to see that he’ll be a 25 year old Sr anchoring the defense if he continues to progress.

      • Mission. I had him ranked as a 4-star in ’16.

        ****
Riley Sharp — Incredible looking pass catching TE with good speed. Not sure if he can block. Heard he is going on a mission, so they’ll have to re-recruit him if that’s true. Major talent who would consistently beat LBs if he remained at TE.

Just change it to “consistently beat OL.”
Always been super stoked about him. Where’s he been all year?

        • Getting into football shape after spending 2+ years not playing football. He was behind some guys on the depth chart and not expected to play alot this year since we started the year with so much linebacker depth. But after several injuries, he’s getting some time and making the most of it.
He’s a bigger dude than I expected. Glad he’s getting his chance to shine.
Sandberg was a bright spot yesterday too. He was the JC D-end we out recruited Incarnate Ward for, and he’s been recovering from a knee injury. He looked like a capable rotation guy yesterday and should help provide some much needed defensive depth

  43. So Oregon State has a BYE this week; Arizona plays @ Stanford at 12:30 PM PT on the Pac-12 Network this Saturday. Arizona has a BYE week following the Oregon State game. Beavers will get the full focus of Arizona next week with no chance of a “trap game” from Arizona. Arizona is on a 2 game losing streak since beating Colorado on the road 35-30. Their losses consist of Washington @ home 51-27 and then @ USC 41-14. It will be interesting to see how the Wildcats “bounce back” against Stanford. The matchup is what matters the most in this game. Khalil Tate is a mobile QB who can throw on the run as well. Arizona’s backfield appears to be RB by committee with Khalil Tate using his legs to get positive yards on scrambles and designed runs. They have close to the same rushing yards as they do passing yards on the season. Looking at their passing yards allowed, 310.1 ypg. As long as Luton is consistent and puts 3-4 full quarters together, Oregon State should come out with another road victory. Our defense is getting better each week and having 2 weeks to prepare for another road trip and to work on getting players healthy and keep their focus after a win will be a positive.

I’m riding the hype train of this team being an improved team each week.

My prediction will come next week after seeing the Arizona @ S(t)anford outcome. (Pac-12 Networks left the “t” out of Stanford on one of the graphics of the Pac-12 Standings)

    • Tate might not even be playing. He was benched in the USC during the 3rd quarter. Their defense seems terrible. Giving up 30 points to Colorado is hard to do.

      • Sumlin’s quote was “there is no QB controversy, we were getting blown out and wanted Gunnell to get some game experience.”

So basically, what everyone was clamoring for JS to do against Utah.
