Let’s continue in the same spirit as last thread.
Maybe include:
–how you became a Beavs fan
–personal encounters with athletes when you were a student or Uber driver (lookin’ at OldYeller)
–experiences with fans of other schools
–your advice to angry on that “modesty” resolution

Of course, feel free to go general; talk about Smith’s new contract, WBB, and any news on the disappearing Jaylon Redd……

GO BEAVS!

  1. I think I stumbled upon this site around 2006. I remember the theme being orange and black and hard to read. My first impression of angry was that he was a current college student who started a blog about OSU because he was bent about his school life. I now know he definitely wasn’t a college student in 2006, perhaps 86? Lol!… Anyways I am glad he puts up with me, and I do agree with him at times believe or not… I have followed the site since 2006 and it’s the only real source for us OSU fans… We may not always agree but I am glad to have a place where all ideas and thoughts are allowed to be seen… Thank you angry and all that help him… I truly don’t think many fan bases have a site like this, so we are fortunate that Angry took it upon himself to start this thing

  2. Just posted this in the last thread so i’ll add it here too.

Some of you may have noticed Nemec posted that Florida State transfer Tre’shaun Harrison visited OSU last weekend. Was news to me. What’s strange is an OSU fan messaged me a few days ago asking me what the likelihood was for OSU to pick up either of Harrison or Trey Lowe, via transfer.

I hadn’t seen indication that either was being pursued by OSU at that time, but then shortly after Coach Hynson and Lowe started following each other and then today the Nemec news about Harrison came out.

So, that’a a long way of saying, maybe this OSU fan knew something was up ahead of me or Nemec. Might be worth keeping an eye out for Trey Lowe reports too. Both guys are class of 2018.

For reference, Harrison was a 4* ATH/WR out of the state of Seattle who first committed to Willie Taggart at oregon, but then followed Taggart to FSU. But Taggart got canned, so Harrison must have decided he didn’t want to attend school across the country without his coach there.

Lowe is out of Jesuit HS in Beaverton. His brother is former duck Keanan Lowe, who was in the news recently for being a good dude and diffusing the situation when a kid brought a gun to school at Parkrose HS. Trey Lowe was a 4* WR also.

Add Velus Jones as another name to possibly watch. He’s a USC transfer WR. Class of 2016 and should be a grad transfer.

  3. I like that Harrison is 6’2”. 27 catches last year for 300 ish yards. You know he would do way better with smiths offense. Could he be an outside guy like Hodgins was?

I just mentioned it on the previous thread, but doesn’t a glaring miss on the two-deep seem to be a “big” WR? I mentioned losing out on Theo Howard, but in looking at his chart, he was not particularly big either. Maybe Harrison could be the answer?

      • When the St. Louis Rams had “The greatest show on turf,” I don’t think they had big WRs. It seemed like they had the quickness and agility to get separation by coming BACK towards the ball/line of scrimmage, then still get up field after getting that separation. Then on subsequent plays, go deep or double move to get downfield. Perhaps the Beavers will have to employ something similar absent tall/big receivers, plus strategic use of TEs?

I think Irish, Ljndsry,Bradford could be used to similar affect w/strategy and route trees, and I expect Gebbia will be getting the call out quickly 1/4 to – 1/2 the way through the season. Then those guys can make YAC.

        • Bruce and Holt. Both were 6ft. But they were great because they were quick and agile as you note.

Beason is 6ft and looks to be in the mold of those guys. We have some good, large TE in the pipeline, too.

          • The tall WR’s help the QB’s with their catch radius for less than perfect throws and contested throws where they are not really open. They can make a QB look better. Hodgins was fantastic at that, as was Tyler Johnson here at Minnesota. They can flex out our TE’s in the red zone to approximate that, but prolly have to run more quick stuff with the shorter WR’s.

          • Is that how it works?
Or does the NCAA just flip a coin and let fate decide if a kid has to sit or not?

I think the rule regarding coaches getting fired or resigning only applies to incoming freshman. For instance, if coach Smith gets fired between now and the start of the season, our 2020 class members could go elsewhere without sitting out.

But outside of freshman, they handle these decisions on a case by case basis. (Helps when your family has money and attorneys on their side, like a Tate Martell)

  4. How I became an OSU fan? My junior year in high school (Central Catholic, Portland; before there were girls there!) my counselor asked me “Where are you going to college?” I said, “Maybe OIT.” I had no idea… it had “technology” in the name. He said, “You should go to a 4 year engineering school like OSU.” I said, “OK”. That 30 seconds was my recruitment.

While at OSU, I watched some of the worst football I’ve ever seen (Avezzano, Fertig) and some of the best basketball (Ralph, w/Johnson, Blume, Radford, Connor, Sitton) I’ve ever seen.

Maybe it’s a false memory but I remember us punting on 3rd down once, because really, there was no hope.

    • Prothro punted on 3rd down numerous times in his time at OSU. Look up stats and you will see where Terry Baker punted, those all were third down quick kicks for field position.

How I became a Beav…..I’m a 3rd Generation Grad from ‘Ol OSU, thus the screen name. I looked and had other college choices but OSU had the major and career path I desired at the time, it was an easy decision. I grew up watching the Orange Express and listening to Darrel Aune on the radio when games weren’t televised. We were a basketball school at the time. I could count on a loss to the Ducks in football but 2 wins in basketball.

I was at OSU during the Gary Payton years. I was at the game with seats very close to the floor when GP went off for 58 on the Trojans. One of my favorite athletic memories while in school there. I was at a party at my buddy’s place and GP was there. Gary was standing over in the corner talking…..but it looked like he was talking to no one and/or anyone who’d listen at the time. I asked my buddy what was up….he said “that’s Gary…he just talks”…his nickname among my buddy and friends was ‘mouth’…..because it was always running. I had classes with several gymnasts. Really great gals and good people. The hard work and dedication they put in was amazing. One take away from school was that we elevate athletes because of their “ability” but deep down they are no different than the rest of the folks on campus and society…filled with good people and bad people. At the time it seemed the football team had a disproportionate share of jerks and bad actors. I think with today’s social media and everyone “watching” or video recording….the quality of person recruited has improved or the bad actors are exposed sooner and removed quicker. It seems like the “character” of the athletes at OSU has improved since I was there.

Other great sports memory from my years at OSU was the 1985 football win 21-20 over the Huskies. I think the Huskies were top 10 maybe top 5 in the nation at the time.

    Other school fan interactions.
WSU- friendly inviting, good folks, welcoming to tailgate/party with them
    UW- Arrogant jerks
    USC- Arrogant jerks
    UCLA- friendly inviting
Zero-that’s a tough one…as a fan base a bunch of jackwagons….but I have/had good friends there so the one on one/small group situation was awesome and good. It really seemed to get much worse after the ’95 rose bowl.

    • Were you at the Loyola Marymount game where GP and Bo Kimble were going at it? I was watching it on TV and it was like watching a really long tennis rally.

    • 1
      1

Speaking of GP. I was there after he was already gone, but heard this story from a couple of older guys. I’m not sure if this is apocryphal or it actually happened, but this is what I heard.

Gary Payton goes into the Circle K on Monroe and 15th, starts loading up on stuff. Gets a Gatorade, some candy, chips, whatever he gets and he just starts to walk out. The cashier says ‘Hey man, you gotta pay for that.’ Gary Payton turns to him and says ‘I’m GP,’ and just walks out.

I’m not sure that actually happened, but I hope it did.

  6. Longtime lurker here. Also a 3rd generation alum who attended games with my grandfather from a young age. I have pretty clear memories of the Ol’ Great Pumpkin running out onto the field ahead of the team and cowering under plastic in the end zone bleachers as the rain came down. Earthquake Enyart was a childhood hero and I pretended to be him playing ball with the neighborhood kids in our back yard. Not long after, I remember the Lonnie Shelton teams in hoops, and of course every team since.

I waited on the ramp as a student to get into the basketball games during the glory years while I was a student before you needed tickets. Gill was absolutely packed for every game and the atmosphere was incredible. You could feel the intimidation working on the visiting teams and then watch them collapse in frustration when they couldn’t cope with Miller’s deliberate style and the crowd on them for every possession. Every starter on that 1980-81 team played in the NBA (Johnson, Blume, Radford, Conner, Sitton). Great memories.

One football story from those days: Once sat in the stands next to Joe Phillips after he quit the Avezzano team. He later transferred to SMU and played in the NFL. He was drunk off his ass as we lost again and he talked shit about everyone.

I also remember marcodg playing his guitar in the stairwell of Weatherford 3/4 East. Think about that every time I watch Animal House.

    • Holy crap! What floor were you on? I lived on 3 east, on the end near the tower? That particular dorm was a piece of work… I spent 3 years in that place afraid that I would burn up in a fire. Some of my best friends to this day lived on 3/4 E. My avatar is a picture of my young son standing in the walkway a few years back. We went down to see a practice during Mannion’s final year.

Annees passees as they say, but the nanny said some bon ami mentioned me. Well here I am. I been knee deep in beaucoup tang up at camp, and when I’m not muffin’ it I been down at the mudbog hunting buster. Thanks for carrin’ ya muff hounds, but c’est bon down here on the bayou.

  8. @NB, what was the Juergens nugget you were referring to when you mentioned he wouldn’t be visiting anymore? That doesn’t sound good….

What positions should the Beavs be targeting in the portal or via late (regular) signing period?

    • I think he’s weighing options, but eventually USC will take him and he’ll jump on it. He sounded pretty enthusiastic about visiting a couple weeks back, but information about him has gone pretty much silent since the holiday break, which usually is a sign there are other schools involved now.

Before xmas he was focused on OSU, Kansas St and Boise St.

You have to imagine the late signing period can see things change rapidly for a recruit as teams are scrambling to clean up after misses in the early signing period.

That being said, he could still visit, but I just dont feel optimistic it will happen.

      • Wasn’t he committed to USC but they pulled his scholarship? I saw some people defending him “decommitting” from USC saying they pulled his scholarship.

Thanks for the info. What’s your feeling on Jake Griffin?

        • Yes, he was committed and they asked him to step back when they thought they would get a better player. But they didnt, and their class sucks. So now they may ask him to come back, and it’s his dream school, so he’d be willing to come back to them after all that.

Griffin sounds pretty enthusiastic about visiting OSU next weekend. He’s “super excited to come!”

But that’s all I’ve got for now.

  9. Does anybody think oregon will give Jaylon Redd the boot and then just backfill with Tre’shaun Harrison?
I can totally see that happen and it’s probably the only reason Nemec had any advanced knowledge that Harrison visited OSU last week.
He never gets the scoop on OSU recruiting, but somehow he was ahead of everybody on this one visitor?? You know it’s because he’s anticipating oregon will get involved. Just like the Devon Williams scenario

    • On a positive note, Harrison and Coach Smith started following each other today on twitter. Smith doesn’t usually get involved unless talks are at least getting serious.
You’d think Harrison would need to enroll somewhere before winter enrollment ends, in order to stay academically eligible.
Unless he’s planning to finish the term at Florida State.

Born and raised in Portland. Parents moved here when they were knocked up with me, so didn’t have any history with Oregon schools. Gave 0 fucks about OSU growing up (followed ducks and huskies a bit just because it was the 90’s and they were both good) but didn’t really follow college athletics. Coming out of high school I wanted to go to UDUB for their engineering program (and going to school that close to Seattle sounded cool as an 18 year old kid) but didn’t work hard enough to merit any large scholarships, so I choose OSU as a more affordable local choice (and my 2 best friends did as well.) Fell in love with the school the minute I set foot on campus for the summer incoming freshman campus immersion weekend. So I stumbled across the lucked into the best choice for me. Corvallis was an ideal college town.

At school 99′-03′ otherwise known as the Erickson years: so a very fun time for football. Played a lot of ball at Dixon, had friends on the majority of teams (football, basketball, soccer, etc…) so a lot of athlete interactions. Notables:
-Partners in a class with Dwan Edwards: quiet and was one of the nicest dudes you could imagine for a future NFL player
-Had a once a week 3 hour night class with Calvin Carlyle that the Professor actually did role call for every class, and Calvin didn’t make it to a single one
-S. Jax: Athletic beast who could throw down a reverse ally-op but had one of the ugliest shots I’ve ever seen. Genuinely nice guy
-Randomly ended up celebrating 21st birthday together on a Sunday night at a bar in downtown Portland that was completely dead with Nick Barnett (also his 21st birthday) and Shamon Jamerson. Hadn’t met him before that night, but both being Beavs Nick and I went drink for drink up to 21.
-James Newson, Richard Seigler, Aric Williams, Hayward-Johnson, can list at least 30 others I had positive interactions with either in class, house parties, out at bars. There’s only guy who I had multiple horrible interactions in my 4 years there, but I won’t speak ill as he’s no longer with us.
-Had a couple different random, on campus interactions and conversations with Simonton. Genuine nice guy. Not full of himself even in the midst of a Heisman campaign.
-Coach Smith: another nice guy. Played ball with him a couple times at Dixon and was always blown away about how a dude smaller and less athletic then myself (and I’m just an average sized guy) was a Fiesta bowl winning quarterback. Heart of a Champion. Glad he’s our coach and look forward to watching him build this thing.

    • Looks like we were at OSU during the same time. So I’m tagging onto your post.

Grew up as an OSU fan because my dad liked their basketball team. Other than that, I didn’t have much knowledge of OSU outside their basketball team. That and the fact they had a soccer team and UO didn’t. I ended up at OSU as a transfer after injuries forced me to retire from soccer at my previous university. OSU had the major I wanted to pursue and the in-state tuition I would need since I was no longer on scholarship. Ended up being a great period of time to be there. I’m always blown away how much nicer campus/corvallis is now than when we were in school.

      – I remember the first time I saw Stephen Jackson walking around campus and thinking “how can a true freshman be that big?” Also worked with a few linemen on the team that were upperclassmen and both would talk about SJ being on another level. They never had anything but good things to say about him.
      – You probably remember the Erickson Angels that would escort all our recruits around on visits. I always found it interesting that one of the coaches daughters was used as bait. Was always curious if he had an issue with it or not.
      – Chad Johnson never left that first booth in the food court section of Memorial Union. Didn’t matter what time of day you walked through he was always posted up. haha.
      – Noah Happe –
      1. I remember his academic advisor showing up at his job and begging him to “just show up for class. I can’t help you if you don’t even show up.”
      2. I was dating one of the gymnasts at the time. one of her teammates was a TA for a biology 101 class he was in. They had a 50 question scantron test he only bothered to pencil in half of it. hahaha If Erickson had stayed our coach no doubt sanctions would have popped up.
      – Dennis Erickson
      1. I worked in the athletic department as an intern. A lot of the admin were still in touch with him even though he had moved on to SF.
Apparently he got himself in trouble with the GM or Team Owners because they pulled up to headquarters and noticed a beer truck parked out front that wasn’t the brand the team used. They wanted to know why the hell the truck was out front. They found out it was because DE had a private tap installed in his office.
      2. Speaking of DE and his love of drinking. One summer at Royal Pac DE somehow managed to shotgun a beer from a bottle using a vortex swirling technique that I have never seen replicated.
Simonton – I Had a few classes with him as well and was always impressed with how down to earth he was. Always wished he had been given a look by the NFL.

Best academic memory – Spring term of my Senior year a few of our professors hosted a graduation party of sorts. Somewhere during the course of the evening the conversation turned to haunted buildings on campus. About 20 drunk individuals including two of the professors at the time decided to try and get into what they thought looked like some of the more likely buildings to be haunted (haha). Building after building were locked until we finally came to Weatherford Hall. It was in the middle of being renovated and they had no way of keeping people out. This was exactly what we were all looking for so we entered and started exploring. Everything was fine until someone grabbed a fire extinguisher and started unloading it outside. This caught the attention of the night watch who proceeded to call the police. Soon enough CPD started arriving. Some of us ran off while others tried to hide. Two of the individuals that tried to hide were the professors. It was pretty priceless to watch the K9 unit go into Weatherford and march the one professor out and handcuff him. He was a really nice guy and in his drunken state decided to be really nice to the cops and tell them where the other professor and students were hiding (the basement of the building next door.) Soon enough you had two professors and maybe 8 students out in the street. Hahaha good times.

      • Good stories. Noah Happe: Before he cracked the starting lineup easily has to go down as the best wedge buster of all time. I used to love watching our kick offs just to see him sprint down at 100% speed and recklessly throw his body into the blockers. Never seen anyone else do it like that lol Guy was insane

Spent a lot of time at soccer parties freshman and sophomore year from making friends in the dorms. We’ve probably shared a a couple beer bongs or keg stands.

Cheers man. OSU was a good time. Go Beavs!

  11. Looks like former Beav commit Spencer Petras will will the starting QB at Iowa. His competition just entered the portal. The only downside of GA leaving.

  12. I went to my first football game at Parker Stadium with my uncle who either had, or had access to, season tickets. Beavs played USC and got crushed. Don’t remember the year but it fell between 1959 and 1962 (I was not a teenager, yet).

My grandfather graduated from Oregon Agriculture College around 1918 and was a life-long Beaver. All my cousins graduated from either OSC or OSU. I attended Grad School at OSU, but was a traitor and did my undergraduate work at OCE (now WOU).

I’ve been a Beaver since I can remember…watched Baker’s 99 yard Liberty Bowl run on TV. Watched on TV when the Beavs were in the Final Four with Baker and Counts. Struggled through the 28 year streak. Was sick and had a fever but watched the Beavs take it to Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. Don’t remember much of the game…thank God for YouTube! Beav baseball has been awesome!

Truly hate the Nike Nutria logo! Still believe we should revert to the “Angry Beaver” logo (see my avatar) as those were the best years of Beaver football.

      >Counts

Speaking of Mel Counts and sharing memories, here’s a funny story.

My mom grew up next to that guy in Coos Bay. He lived a little further up the river and he used to dribble his basketball from his house to the ferry they had to take to get across part of the bay to get to school. Like three or four miles round trip, every damned day. Their class photos were hilarious, he was a head taller than his kindergarten teacher.

So, years later, Melvin as she called him, was back in town during I think his 2nd or 3rd year in the NBA when he was still with the Celtics. He went over to my grandma’s house right on the Coos River and my mom was there. He’d brought a friend.

‘Do you remember who he was?’ I asked. ‘He was a very tall black guy, almost as tall as Melvin,’ she says. ‘I think his name was Bill.’ ‘Bill Russell came to grandma’s house?’ ‘That sounds right. He seemed nice.’

So, yeah, my mom met Bill Russell and had no clue who the guy was.

  13. 14

I was the first person in my family to go to college, so I didn’t favor Oregon State or Oregon when I was a kid. One time, I was around 9 or 10 years old and I was at a bookstore with my mom. I was wearing an Oregon State shirt. My grade school principal was there, bigtime Duck honk as it turned out. He sees my shirt and says ‘You’re wearing the wrong shirt, you should root for the Ducks.’ I said ‘Well, I like both teams.’ He says ‘You can’t do that, you have to pick one or the other.’ ‘Well then, I pick the Beavers.’

The guy was a total asshole as it turned out, I got to know him years later. I was too young to know at that point. Anyway, I didn’t like the way he put me on the spot. Fuck that guy.

When I was actually at Oregon State, I taught Reggie Tongue how to use the internet. Super nice guy. We used to play hoops at Dixon with a bunch of football players. I once ran into Armon Hatcher trying to get a loose ball, felt like I was in a car accident. I was a student athlete too and in good shape but this guy was different. Dude was seriously stacked up. He was pretty pissed for a second. I was like ‘Sorry man, you’re faster than I expected.’ He kind of laughed and everything was fine. Later, I dunked on some Asian kid and got kicked out.

    Good times.

  14. Both parents went to Oregon State. My mom ran track and cross country. She had an offer to go to Oregon, but they didn’t offer a Mathematical science degree (old school computer science). Broke my grandpa’s heart because he played Baseball and Basketball at O of U. My love of sports comes from my grandpa, he was a basketball coach at a CC in Oregon. Some of the favorite memories are post civil war bragging rights calls. He’d only call me directly once a year and only if the Ducks won.

Went to OSU 2004-2008, only had a few interactions with players, and the only one that sticks out is we lived in the same building as Yvenson Bernard and he was genuinely a nice guy.

I now live in Tennessee and been to a couple women’s tournament games (Knoxville and Lexington, KY) and the Ohio State game last year. Everyone I’ve talked with at games has been nice. If you think Utah and Oregon are annoying, just move to SEC country. You can’t go to a social even without hearing from somebody thoughts on their team. New Year’s eve I learned more about Mississippi State then I’ve every want to know, and no one knows anything about Pac 12 sports.

I started reading 2010ish, and have never been a major contributor, but come here daily for my beaver news.

  15. I am a Beaver alum/fan because of the U of Minnesota. Seems fitting.
My older sister finished her PhD at Oklahoma State and got her first teaching job at Oregon State. Didn’t have much money so following her out to Corvallis was a way to save money and get out of Rapid City, SD. I was a huge college basketball fan(UCLA), but knew Oregon State was good, so that sealed the deal. Managed to be there for apex of the Miller Time/Orange Express days. Charlie Sitton was a classmate, graduating in ’84
My sister was born with a atrial septal defect, which was a certain death sentence at that time. By shear chance the brand new doctor in the small town in ND where my parents had just moved, had done some some research while attending the U of Minnesota Med School for C Walton Lillehei MD, the man who pioneered open heart surgery. My sister ended up being patient #23 in the world who had this surgery at the U of M. The other two kids who had it done that week both died during the surgery. It was basically human experimentation. I have often thought of what a Sophies Choice like decision my parents had to make to take a chance on that.
Regret: Not going to Eugene in ’83 just to be able to say was at the last tied game in CFF history and arguably the worst ever played. The “Toilet Bowl.”
Had a night class senior year that the Prof. changed the time from 7 to 5:30 and shortened it from three hours to 1.5 and ended the lecture so he and the students would have just have enough time to get to Gill for tipoff. Dr. King was the man!

    • Nice. Brent Johnson has gold the most accurate, IMO.

I think gold is still in a bullish uptrend and should hit 1650 this cycle, but I think stocks have firmly planted they’re ready for a blow off top or at least a big year. I had stocks with another big year/blow off top as only 20%, but it’s looking likely with the early action. Long way to go…but the liquidity is there to fuel the fire.

  16. My parents were OSU alums who moved to Ohio, where I grew up. We never got any Beaver games on TV in any sport until the 98 Civil War. After seeing that upset and OSU hire Erickson, our family started listening to the games on internet radio every Saturday (before Mike Parker sounded depressed). I’ll never forget watching the 2000 Fiesta Bowl and being in shock the whole time that we were controlling the game so much. Watching Bill Swancutt devour the Ducks in 2004 was a great memory, too.

As far as worst fans, I’ve never met a more obnoxious bunch than Ohio State fans. They have the the sense of entitlement that fans of big programs have combined with an inexplicable self-image as perpetual underdogs. Must be the whole “Ohio against the world” mentality.

  17. 11
    2

I’m actually a Portland St.graduate but started following Beaver basketball during the Ralph Miller era and it expanded into the other sports. I went to U of O on a journalism scholarship for one year, but hated the experience and entered the transfer portal. That experience started my lifetime hatred of all things Quack. I just like underdogs in general and that sort of fits the Beavs.

  18. Beaver fan since I was born. More of a Portland State Viking fan in the 1980s, used to go to a lot of PSU games at Civic Stadium in Portland. Listened to OSU Basketball Darrell Aune on the radio just about every game during the Gary Payton days. First Beaver football game I remember watching on TV was 1987 at Texas, a 61-16 loss when Erik Wilhelm was QB. Decided to go to OSU because of the engineering program. First live game going to Parker Stadium was in 1999. Seemed like we rushed the field after every game that year. Only football coach during my time at OSU was Dennis. I used to park in the stadium lot to go to class and I remember Dennis parking right in front in a huge Caddy, as I was walking by he got out and says “good morning!”. I only went to one basketball game during my time at OSU and somehow I got lucky enough to see Deaundre Tanner drop a 3 at the buzzer in OT to beat Arizona, that was fucking unreal.

    • I hear you, I think Vik football was more exciting then anything OSU was putting out. Viks were a D-2 power, but could never quite get over the hump and win the championship.

    • Worth a read. Says he got interested in basketball during the orange express days at OSU and is still a big fan of OSU basketball( and football)
The type of guy OSU could really use to help give our athletic department a much needed cash infusion.

  19. Became a Beavs fan when I moved to Oregon in the 80’s as a kid. They were the local team so it made sense even though my dad is a UO grad. Sorry Dad.

First football game was in 1987 i believe vs Akron. Kragthorpe was the coach and Erik Wilhelm was our QB. Also had a very good WR on that team. Robb Thomas maybe? It’s been too long and I’ve killed too many brain cells.

The owners of the store my dad managed had season tix for hoops so whenever they couldn’t make it to the games they would leave their tickets at will call for us. Saw many of the Gary Payton era in person but started following the hoops team during the Jose Ortiz era just before.

I’ve seen many Pac-12 greats come thru Gill that were fantastic players that turned into long NBA careers. Sean Elliott, Steve Kerr, Jason Kidd, Damon Stoudamire. Back then it was Stanford, Arizona and the Beavs as the best in the Pac. UCLA was good too.

Best hoops memory was “Super” Mario Jackson’s buzzer beater from 15′ off an inbounds pass from under their own basket to beat WSU in OT. Probably 1992 or around there. Kelvin Sampson was the coach at Wazzu and they had a player named Tony Harris that was their stud. Everyone was giving him shit for his “rat tail”. Look it up if you’re not old enough to know what that is.

I started coming around here after pure orange banned me. I worked with Mike Dennison at the time who owned the site and he was a good dude. Think I called him a nazi after starting a keyboard fight with some guy who’s son was the OSU kicker. I grew tired of the rah rah and “let the season play out” types that permeated there. Dissent was not welcome.

I soured on Riley and I was done with him after that Alamo Bowl loss to Texas and wanted him gone. Still owe Shawn Eichorst a thank you card.

Best football memory was seeing the Beavs end the 33 year hex against USC in 2000. As soon as Ken Simonton busted that 4th and 2 run for a TD we knew it was over. I found a freshman LB dancing around by himself after we rushed the field. Slapped him on the shoulder pad, shook his hand and said helluva job out there today. That freshman was Richard Seigler.

My late first wife also worked in the accounting department at OSU and dealt with many of the student athletes during her time there. Sammy Stroughter was the nicest guy off the field I can remember and if I ever meet him again I will thank him in person for the kind words he had for her after she got her cancer diagnosis and had to stop working to concentrate on treatment. Omari Johnson on the men’s hoops team was also a super cool, nice guy as well.

    • Just to piggy back off what I wrote earlier about seeing in person some great players come thru Gill quite a few more came to mind……

      Harold Minor (nicknamed Baby Jordan)
      Eddie House
      The O’Bannon brothers at UCLA
      Andre Igoudala
      Todd Lichti
      Craig McMillian
      Shareef Abdur-Rahim
      Terrell Brandon
      Chris Mills
      Jason Terry
      Mike Bibby

Was at the game vs UA around 2005 when the Beavs beat them in OT. Igoudala fouled out in OT and David Lucas threw down a huge dunk to put the game away. Seeing them handle the press with ease with pinpoint passing was beautiful to watch. Lute Olson lost his shit. Always a good day when we beat the ‘Cats.

      • Don’t forget Richard Jefferson that guy had springs and a long NBA career. I remember a block he had against the Beavs that would have made the volleyball coach take note.

        • Anybody catch the Arizona game where Tanner hit the game winner and the fans rushed the court?
If you can find a replay, Jason Terry just cold cocks an OSU fan that’s running by him. Remember seeing it live and making a mental note to never rush the court or field. Not worth it.

Remember another game, might have been the 1998 2 OT Civil War win, back when fans were still bold enough to try and rip down the goal posts. One of the posts ended up falling into the crowd, Timber!!! style and landed smack on top of some girls head. Surprised she survived that.

          The good ol days

          • I was at that game. Rushed the court. Glad I didn’t catch Terry’s hands.

Dino was cold as ice. Unstoppable in pickup games.

It’s crazy how good those dudes are against regular people. I feel like Jimmy Haywood did not miss a shot at Dixon ever.

Kinda like watching NBA players before games: A lot of Random ass bench power forwards that you’d never want to shoot outside of the key’ can stand out about 30 and knock down 10 in a row with no Defense to beat.

      • I was at that game too, but I believe it was winter of 2004. My good friend came down from UofO cause he was friends with Chris Rodgers (super weird dude and a huge bust). Was a fairly awkward exchange in the tunnel after the game. Went to a house party that night and Salim Staudamire was there hitting on this super hot chick. She wasn’t having any of it so she turns around and starts talking to me. Funny that whole 2003 wildcat recruiting class was supposed to be all time.

        • Yeah. I just remember is was around 2005. Not sure of the exact year.

Sadly that game was probably the highlight of the Jay John era.

He was an assistant coach at Cal but he’s no longer there. Not sure where he’s at now.

    • How could i have forgotten Teo Alibegovic?!?!?!?

He and another guy by the name of Jim Hanchett are probably my fav beav hoops players of all time.

Teo caught a full court pass for a layup to beat UCLA at Gill in the early 90’s after it looked like the Beavs were dead. Ucla took the lead with about 3 seconds left and we thought that was it. I remember jumping so high with my fist in the air after Teo scored to win it that my fist hit the ceiling and damn near broke my hand.

Hanchett was a JC transfer from a CC in Utah that was only 6′-4″. But that guy had heart and toughness. Around the rim it seemed he’d get damn near every rebound. A poor man’s Dennis Rodman.

  20. I already shared my story about finding angry Beavs but not why I’m a beav

I was born into it, my parents went to osu during the end of Pettibone and Riley’s 1st era and my grandparents were at osu during during The days of tommy protho and Dee Andros.

I went to my first game at 8 months old but my first real memories in general are actually the beavers beating mizzou on yvenson bernards 2 point conversion and storming the field and getting to meeting Adam Koets after the 2006 civil war. Since then I kinda fell in love with beaver football and have followed it religiously.
My favorite memory about osu football was meeting James and Jacquizz at the sun bowl in 2008 (they were my favorite players) and storming the field after knocking off #1 USC in 2008. More recently would be the 2016 civil war win in the rain or the comeback over Colorado
My favorite beaver to watch in my short time has gotta be Brandin cooks because of how electric he was with the ball or Jacquizz because he played with so much heart.
I truly think if a coach can turn it around here it’s coach smith. He knows how to win here and I believe if we can continue in this trajectory we will get back to seasons like 2000 soon.
I can’t wait for the next season to start and I’m already counting down the days til September 3rd.
    Go Beavs!!

  22. My dad took me to basketball games when I lived in Corvallis, I remember seeing Charlie Sitton and AC Green killing it. Not sure what year that would have been, early 80s.

      • That makes sense, I was in 6th and 7th grade.
I was just talking to my son about that time period. I had an Oregonian paper route and you could order daily or Sunday only. I had 70-80 dailys and hovered around 100 Sundays. Those fucking things were so thick and heavy I could only fit 6 of them (3 front, 3 back) in that canvas delivery bag they gave me. Sunday was a long hard morning with lots of trips back and forth to the house.

  23. Nemec has a piece on Alex Lemon today. Says he intends to stay at JC 1 more year and come out as class of 2021. Still says he may end up a Beaver, but with a delay.
Academics and family issues prevented him from playing this season and he hasn’t yet met the requirements to transfer.

  24. Back to the theme topic…I first became a Beaver fan when I went from Eastern Oregon (Ontario) to OSU in 1957. I can remember sitting in the old bleachers and watching Joe Francis and defenders like Ted Bates. After three years of rather sub-standard academic performance, I left and joined the Army. (NOTE: I did, however have a hell of a lot of fun during those three years). Four years later, I returned with a wife and 2-year old to finish up and discovered that if you approached school as seriously as you would a job, it wasn’t particularly difficult, even working 7-11 at night on a sub-assembly crew at Flo Matcher (are they still there?) while carrying a full academic load. More to the point, we always had the radio on at night to listen to OSU basketball back when Jimmy Anderson was a player, not a coach. It seemed like OSU was the only PAC team that could beat UCLA in those days. After I graduated we left Corvallis and were pretty much out of touch with OSU sports — 15 years living out of the country, 9 years in Tennessee, etc. We came back to the states in 2007 and I’m an avid follower of OSU football, basketball, and baseball (and would like to get over to watch rugby more often). And, of course, a daily reader of Angry Beavers with the occasional comment.
    Cheers to you all.

    • wonder if they can couch it as “team issues equipment”?

Sortof like how Gary Andersen provided his players with iPads?
What good is an iPad without headphones?

  25. 2
    3

sucks for these WSU players that already signed for 2020. They have to enter the transfer portal before they can even talk with another team.
Means they have to wait about 48 hours to have any communication, if they want to leave WSU now.
And general sentiment is most of them are pissed off. Especially with how Coach Leach is parading around online like he’s some kindof of hero.
I know people like the guy cause he’s smart ass with the media and a loose cannon. But Aunt Patty is a giant douchebag in my book.

    https://twitter.com/Coach_Leach/status/1215418003535171584

  26. At least Leach stuck around for about 7 years. Rhule left Baylor after 3 years and interviewed with at least one team every year. Including after the first year.

    • Close for the first 3 qtrs. Baylor has Lauren Cox back from injury now so we will get to see what Baylor can do. Will they be the team to beat? Or Oregon?

    • The OLive article says he played as a True Freshman (2 games) to preserve his redshirt and did not play this past season. Does that mean he’ll be immediately eligible to play? Will He have 3 years to play 3? Confused how it all works.

Also funny to note the tone of the OSU recruiting articles by Nemec. Just very bland, and doesn’t give kudos to OSU. Complete opposite tone to the articles he does for the Quacks.

      • Should he have four years of eligibility since he redshirted freshman year and then medically redshirted sophomore year? I’m just hoping!

    • Just saw that. Pretty awesome to land a 4-star at this point.
Haven’t had a chance to watch his film. Legit?

Edit: just watched some film. Breakaway speed, but all his film is at RB. At least what I found. Can he catch?

    • A clear sign that the players are seeing change and optimistic about not just progress, but results.

OSU can’t expect to surprise people next year. Prep, play calling and execution will need to be there. Opposing staffs won’t overlook Hamilcar, Speights, Jefferson, et al. They’re going to be taken seriously.

With changes at UW, WSU, QB change at UO, next season should be a good time to make a move up in the pac, no?

  27. If I were at Gill I would’ve booed them off the floor after that piss poor first half effort.

    Fucking pathetic!!!!!

  28. That was the worst half of basketball in Tinkles time here. They ran no offense it was just one on one
and Tres and Ethan were awful.

  29. Just my suspicion, but I think Smith is getting creative with loopholes in the bylaws when he’s wanting to being transfers in. This is the 3rd time we’ve had a transfer join the team as a walk on initially, and then sign a scholarship later when room opens.
I’m thinking of Tyjon Lindsey and Charles Moore.
I think(dont quote me on this) they can bring the guys in on a financial aid agreement if they don’t technically “recruit” the players. So if they dont pay for an official visit, or go visit the players in home. This way, they can have the guy on campus attending class prior to officially going on an athletic scholarship, and they can also count them forward or backwards a class, depending on how much room they have. It’s pretty savvy.

One other thing I could see if Lowe getting a family hardship waiver. Those are usually granted for guys moving close to home for family reasons. I dont know the exact mile radius they need to be from their home, bit Lowe is from Portland and Corvallis is the closest option for him. Looking forward to finding out if he will be eligible immediately.

    • That sounds like a competent recruiting staff… something we haven’t had in years. I like how Smith is using transfers and also having them become immediate contributors. Makes me wonder how much better Smith would have utilized Thomas Tyner compared to GA. :(

      • Maybe could have encouraged him to drop that “fishing weight.” : )

What a lost opportunity. I recall Tyner was a strong OSU lean, then left at halftime of the Sac State (?) debacle. I always choked that Riley/Banker were sluts that wanted to be someone’s “first:” Boise State’s first Pac win….Sac State….EWU(?)… It sounded like their incompetence made Tyner look to Oregon for a more serious program. I’m sure it cost other capable players.

  30. 1
    1

    Alright, I’ll play again.

–how you became a Beavs fan
Funny thing. I grew up a duck fan (my dad graduated from UO), and had actually been to quite a few Oregon games as a kid. The first OSU football game I attended was against TCU in Cowboy Stadium as a Freshman. I chose OSU because they have a good engineering program, it was in state (i.e. cheap for me), and I had a lot of friends going there. I had actually already signed up for housing at OSU before contacting the coaches in the spring of 2010.

–personal encounters with athletes when you were a student or Uber driver (lookin’ at OldYeller)
I almost caught a deep ball thrown by Sean Mannion on some random spring day in 2014. I still think about it sometimes.

–experiences with fans of other schools
You don’t really hear the fans from the field very much, so I don’t have many good fan stories when I was there. This year though, I went to the Ok State game and some doofus was there wearing bright green Duck gear head to toe. I should have taken a picture, but I was too disgusted to think of that at the time.

–your advice to angry on that “modesty” resolution
Nah, this is the internet, where everyone’s an idiot except you.

  31. Great addition with Lowe. Looks like a similar skill set to Lindsay’s. Another small, quick receiver.

We’re going to have a ridiculously fast receiving corps between Irish, Lindsay, and Lowe (and Gould, if he can develop). We still need some height, though…

    • Why is everyone so we obsessed with having a dude just like hodgins? We have never had a guy like hodgins be anywhere close to that successful. The biggest wide receiver I can remember who was really successful was TJ (6’2″). Having a tall skilled wideout is nice and creates crazy mis matched but it’s not a necessity and they aren’t easy to get.

      • I’m not obsessed with having a receiver like hodgins in terms of hands and catch radius but more just a guy with height. I don’t think it makes or breaks the season but typically in college you get qbs throwing up fades, jump balls, not super accurate etc and it’s nice to have a guy that can go up and get those. Villamin was very frustrating to watch. Rather have the hands than the height. Bradford could be that guy if he recaptures was he did two seasons ago. If smith is looking for another addition I’d like to see a receiver with height to
Create a little variety in the cupboard.

        • Yes this. A big wideout is nice but aslong as you have guys that can get open and catch you are okay. Big TE that can catch create huge scheme advantages where you can design the play to get them open.

        • That’s what I was getting at above. We have some nice TE prospects taking over next year. Should mitigate losing Hodgins. Getting open, good hands, and breakaway speed all way more important these days than size. I see a ton of talent at WR.

      • It would be nice to have a tall fast receiver, but OSU will be able to create mismatches by having speed across its WR group; some opposing LB or DB is going to fail to cover. Again, makes me think a bit of the St. Louis Rams “greatest show on turf.”

        • I thought Villamin started his career out well, but after he nearly was decapitated at Arizona trying to catch a Seth Collins pass, he never was the same. Can’t really blame him. Not sure how anybody would fully recover from a hit like this. i think this play was when Angry first dropped “hospital ball” into our lexicon.

          https://youtu.be/2qHq19711dM

  32. I saw some comments from Nemec where he thought Lowe would be eligible immediately because he didn’t play last year for UW, but Nemec also cautioned that he wasn’t 100% sure of the rules.

    Here’s why I disagree:
In the absence of a waiver, the rules require a player to have 1 year of good academic standing at their new institution if they would like to play the following season. For schools like OSU on the quarter system, this means 3 quarters attending OSU(not including Summer session) in order to be eligible.
If you think back to Addison Gumbs. He blew out his knee during the 2018 fall camp at Oklahoma. He wasn’t going to play that season. But, he did want to transfer and be eligible to play the next season at his new school. So he transferred the day before their first game and enrolled in E-courses at OSU before Fall enrollment 2018 at OSU was closed. This caused him to be eligible to play in the 2019 season.

In the case of Lowe, even if he was injured/ill all last season, he was still on the UW roster when the football season started.
His transfer announcement came out October 24th, well after Fall enrollment was closed. So, in order to play next season without a waiver, he would have needed to leave UW in early October and enroll at OSU. Based on his name being added to the OSU directory yesterday, we know this didn’t happen.

So, if we want to see Lowe play next season at OSU, he will need to be granted a waiver by the NCAA. That could happen, but it’s never guaranteed until a final decision is made.

Here’s the NCAA definition of the rule:
“Academic year in residence: Under the basic transfer regulations, you must spend an academic year in residence at the school to which you are transferring. If you transfer from a four-year college to an NCAA school, you must complete one academic year in residence at the new school before you can play for or receive travel expenses from the new school, unless you qualify for a transfer exception or waiver. To satisfy an academic year in residence, you must be enrolled in and successfully complete a full-time program of studies for two-full semesters or three-full quarters. Summer school terms and part-time enrollment do not count toward fulfilling an academic year in residence.”

Sorry for the long post. I just get annoyed with reporters who guess on the rules when they’re clearly written and easy to find if you search for them. He is the self anointed recruiting guru. He should know these things already.

  33. Was watching HUDL film for Tre’shaun Harrison (another potential transfer candidate)

I can’t say that anything specifically stands out, except that he plays so effortlessly. Time after time, it looks like he has no business gaining more than a few yards, but he somehow slips past every defender and finds the end zone. And he’s outrunning everybody, even though his legs don’t look like they’re having to work very hard. Take a look and you’ll see what I mean. One play was something I don’t think I’d ever seen before, where he is back as the punter, but then runs past everybody for a 50 yard gain. He’s slippery.

    https://www.hudl.com/video/3/7594251/5a2737223863481da470472e

On the upside, he looks like a legitimate weapon.
Downside….he was a Willie Taggart recruit. What type of baggage does that come with?
I would love to see OSU land a guy that oregon really wanted 2 years ago, only to lose out at a hat ceremony.

      1

To the way he runs. He keeps his knees fairly low but his turn over is really high. If you compare how often his feet touch to the guys chasing him he is getting 1.25+ strides per defender stride. Because his knee stays low and he has a short stride he can change directions really fast and just gets guys hips going all over the place.

He should work on adding a ‘free’ form where he lifts his knees and lengthen his stride and college guys would have a hell of a time catching him.

Edit: Just watched again and you can really see his stride if you look at his trail leg, His foot only gets maybe 1 ft behind his butt so hes staying really compact over his hips. He runs like a 100m specialist but his knees are just too low. Doesn’t look like he ever did track which is too bad cause I think he would have had some pretty good 100m times.

        • It’s pretty effective aslong as you have high turnover. Really ups the ability to change direction and stay balanced. See Steve Smith highlights before he gets open space.

        • Yeveson(sp?) Bernard had a short stride. I think it was because he grew up playing so much soccer, and I suspect when running and dribbling a soccer ball, a shorter stride is beneficial for control. As a RB I think it helped with his shiftiness and be tougher to bring down than expected.

      • I’d say decent, but the longer it goes, the less i like our chances. Kindof like with Howard, or even Devon Williams. At one point it seemed he was a sure thing to OSU, but recruiting has an unspoken element that causes guys to look around more than you would think.

  34. The Oregonian has an article about the Rooney rules success in Oregon. They mention Christobal as a success story. I get that he has Cuban roots but the guy looks full on Caucasian to me and he was born in Florida. What am i missing here?

    • I get the feeling he hates losing more than he likes winning. That can be a powerful motivation tool to keep improving if you are a of the mindset to put your head down and fix the problems. He seems to fit that mold and I like that he rarely gets in a funk, seems like he has half of the weeks practice already planned out by half time.

    • @Angry, I was thinking about the recklessness while looking over Leach’s bonus structure. I’m sure Smith also gets a bonus if he reaches a bowl game. Not to say he’s in it for the money, but missing out on a bowl game this year when it was in reach has to bug him. And he has many months to think back to key moments from the 2019 season.

  35. From the GT on last nights basketball game:
“A pre-game plan to be in a certain scheme defensively after OSU’s first made basket didn’t work out because some players forgot what to do. The same happened returning to the floor after timeouts.” and “…Tinkle said. “We told them what they’re capable of doing, but obviously we didn’t get our guys fired up enough to play.”

Does coach Tinkle put emphasis on “firing up” at the expense of technique, scheme, and effective practice?

    • Doubtful. I’ve never seen a practice but have seen video portions of some. Those vids show them practicing the same way they play, no sense of urgency, lack of attention to detail, and just seeming to go through the motions. This team certainly plays like they practice it seems.

    • Watch the post-game comment space. Tinkle has been using that excuse for a very long time. Worded differently but the post-game message after a loss is the same.

    • When Ralph was here if you “forgot” you got to watch the game from the bench.

I am sick of these weak excuses. Is this guy the coach or is he a nanny.

      • Motivation is primarily the responsibility of the players. Very good+ players don’t need a rah-rah speech, they are self motivated and don’t like losing. If they’re not motivated, let them get splinters in their ass.

  36. Texas Tech announced this afternoon that WR Seth Collins has been granted an NCAA waiver for a sixth year of eligibility. He caught 32 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns in 2018, but missed 2019 season after suffering a shoulder/collarbone injury in March.

  37. Sounds like Jeromy Reichner and Omar Speights mom has something newsy that she is planning to share today. Have no idea what it is. She seems surprised that the team hasn’t said anything so I guess she is planning to put it out herself.

Hopefully it’s something good like an extra year of eligibility for J. Reichner or a post season award for Speights.
She said she’ll post later on today.

  38. Decided to check the student directory to see if Tre’shaun Harrison is in there by any chance.
He’s not, but there is a student with the last name
    “Harrison Tse-Shuan”

    How strange is that?

  39. 11

Fwiw, the same guy who mentioned Harrison and Lowe to me last weekend is saying our chances are pretty high right now to land Harrison, based on info he has heard. In the interest of maintaining his privacy, i wont say exactly what odds he gave me, but it’s high.
Says the Lowe PWO signing was made purposefully in order to leave room for Harrison to sign to a scholarship.

Keep in mind, nothing is binding until they are enrolled and attend a class. I dont want to see another Devon Williams scenario bite us in the ass.

      • A different angle than we/I are used to. Not going because your team is killing the opponent so often that the games are boring.

        • 3
          1

          Yeah.
The haves have that problem, and the have nots have this problem ^.
Combine both and you have a sport in decay.

It would be nice if major outlets acknowledged that the same 10 teams have a shot any given year, so it’s boring as F for the 110 other fanbases. The only time the other 110 fanbases really care about college football is 1 out of every 20 years where the stars align, and they get a soft schedule combined with a senior laden team.

          • See WBB. Coaching can, over time, change the pecking order; Tenn, SC, Baylor and even UConn beginning to fade out of the spotlight. A lot easier in WBB (or MBB) than FB.

          • Major outlets try to spin Alabama v. Clemson every year as a GOOD thing….and how shocking it is not to have Alabama in the playoffs.

They don’t want competition. They want the false narrative they spin way back in preseason to be manifest in the playoffs and in the “national championship.”

      • Thanks for posting that. I was going to say “I discovered this site in 2010 or 2011 and started posting….” and reference that post you made that included my comments. I tried to read pure orange for a while, but couldn’t stomach the group think and fortunately found this site.

I have watched a lot less football since I posted those remarks, though I tuned into more games this year to see what Smith and staff would do. I generally find instead of investing 3+ hours into viewing, I can enjoy comments and insights here, and watch highlights in 20 minutes or less later. With OSU Football playing late games, I did watch more this season than I otherwise would have.

MBB seems irresponsibly bad; like even a blind Beaver finds a cottonwood now and then, not OSU MBB coaches….

I watch WBB once in a while because even though its not the highest athletic expression of the sport, it has team play and more integrity because there’s no money in it. I really respect what Rueck has done and think the student-athletes deserve an audience.

I enjoy this site very much, but take breaks from time to time just because I think its healthy. I never disliked Angry, I respected and enjoyed the constructive criticism from the beginning. Lots of people in here offer valuable information and insight, and i think what I appreciate most is that people here do recognize you can be a fan AND offer constructive criticism, and do not live vicariously through a bunch of players.

        • You don’t base your entire mental well being and ego on the athletic accomplishments of 17-25 year old guys playing a game? Idk if that’s healthy, might want to get some therapy for that kind of mindset. Hell a person could grow an actual identity and purpose…

    • Growing up I was a drummer and Rush was the first rock band I was into. Thanks for that tribute song. All time favorite group and drummer. So sad to see Neal Peaet die young but he leaves an amazing body of work over 43 years.

  40. Oh really, the play by play said pivec made a jumper with 1 second left. It didnt say anything about a block in the last few seconds. Nice. That’s a good test for them. It still concerns my with the amount of turn overs we’ve had. Its always in double digits even when playing cream puffs. It seems way to high for a championship caliber team. Am I wrong about that?

  41. Coach Pitre starting following Chris Murray (the UCLA offensive lineman transfer) within the past 24 hours, so that’s something to keep an eye on.

  42. That Wake Forest grad transfer QB ended up choosing Georgia over Oregon. So either ducks still need to find a new QB for next season, or they need to play someone on their current roster with almost no experience. Plus 4 of their 5 OL starters will be gone.

    • I think Mario focuses a lot on the OL, so the transition shouldn’t be as rough.

Is Jack Sears still looking around? He could end up there.

At least one of their OTs was massive, and they’ve got some highly ranked, young Dlineman. Cristobal said he wanted to build from the lines and win in the fourth quarter, and he seems to have done that this past year. They were nothing like the Kelly, early Helfrich Ducks. I don’t know how he gets those lineman to Eugene. Makes me (and others here I know) think there’s something going on. But I think his in game coaching will always cost them about 2 games. Then throw in a game or two where they just get outplayed.

But with a QB change at UO, coaching changes at UW, WSU, and Stanford in a lull(?), the Beavers have the opportunity to move up next year if their offensive line can get it together. I am actually looking forward to an OSU football defense for the first time in YEARS…

        2

Cristobal inherited Herbert. It’ll be interesting to see if he has success with quarterbacks, I’ve seen some odd “linemen are the rock stars and deserve all the recognition” quotes from him. While there is some truth to that it kinda has that Anderpants dysfunctional jealousy ring to it.

  43. OT: In the NFL, the Titans are winning after having benched Mariota. Mariota is apparently playing the role of Baltimore’s Jackson for the scout team this week in preparation for today’s playoff game.

I don’t dislike Mariota. I expect he’ll move or be traded after the season(?) and will be curious to see if he has a higher ceiling elsewhere. 76 career TDs against 44 INTs is a pretty poor ratio. Looks like he took a lot of sacks.

A Chiefs/Ravens AFC championship would be entertaining.

    • I think he is a career backup. He just doesn’t have a great feel for the game like an elite QB. IMO his biggest weakness is a feel for the pass rush. He seems to not know when to throw it away, step up in the pocket, dump it off, scramble, etc.

    • I never got the hype, even in college. There was no way to tell if he was a system QB or not and he seemed to struggle throwing the deep ball.

      • I thought he was a perfect fit for what the ducks ran on offense. Lots of great college QB’s flop in the NFL. Some late rounders do really well.

@angry, do you have any football blog connections at Stanford? Curious if they could provide insight as to the reason for the transfers. I heard part of it is Shaw encouraging graduate students to look elsewhere due to the difficulty in getting accepted into Stanfords graduate programs. Seems to be more to it that that. And the timing after a down year makes me skeptical.

    • Only the Stanford blogger who I work with every year. I can ask him.

Edit: He said he’d stop by later today and answer the question.

      • 13
        1

It’s not entirely clear what’s going on with the recent transfers. I’ll give you a few theories that are going around and my thoughts on each.
        1. “David Shaw has lost the program.” I don’t really buy this. When the first couple guys hit the portal, I heard from a source that it was only the beginning, with the clear implication being that guys wanted out. It turns out that lots of guys ended up in the portal, but it was only the number of players that was surprising. The individual names all made sense. Almost all.
        2. “It’s hard to get into grad school at Stanford.” Well, obviously. But the thing is, this never seemed to be a problem in the past. There were always at least five or ten fifth-year seniors on the roster, and I don’t think all of those guys were getting second degrees. Some just stretched their undergraduate degree across four years plus an extra quarter.
        3. “The players leaving have good individual reasons to be leaving.” This one makes the most sense. The majority of the guys weren’t going to be starters or, in some cases, weren’t going to see much playing time at all. One really good example of this is defensive lineman Bo Peek. He never really played a whole lot, so it isn’t surprising that he’s taking his Stanford degree and transferring back to his hometown school, South Florida. He’ll spend his last year of football playing in front of his family and friends. There are other guys with similar stories. The biggest concerns, though, are defensive linemen Michael Williams and Jovan Swann. Both of these guys started games this past fall, and they would definitely have been starters this coming fall. Making matters worse, this was probably already the thinnest unit on the team. It’s hard to spin those two decisions. I can only imagine that they weren’t happy — or maybe they’re hoping to maximize their NFL possibilities by landing in a program that plays a scheme that will allow them to showcase their talents a bit more.

The big name, obviously, is K.J. Costello, but to be honest, that one was the least surprising to me. Yes, he had a great season in 2018, one of the best single seasons for any quarterback in Stanford history, but this year was a trainwreck. He suffered three different injuries, and even when he was on the field he never looked quite healthy. Entering the season it was widely assumed that he’d have another fine year and then head to the draft. That’s obviously no longer a legitimate option. The problem for Costello is that Davis Mills replaced him and looked much better. I have to believe that Costello and Shaw had a conversation. If Shaw had guaranteed him the starting job, he probably would’ve stayed, but there’s too much evidence that Mills is the better quarterback. At best, Shaw probably told him that there would be a competition through the spring and summer. If that’s the case, the risk for Costello would’ve been too great. If he can find a spot — Mississippi State? — where he’s guaranteed the starting job, he might be able to convince an NFL team to draft him. Can’t blame him at all for that.

But all of that obscures the larger issues within the program. Was there some controllable variable that led to such an onslaught of injuries last season? Can the offensive line return to what it once was? Can the defense stop anyone?

There was some good news. Left tackle Walker Little, who would’ve been a high first round pick in this draft if he hadn’t been injured Week 1, is returning. (Many assumed he’d leave anyway.) And last Friday cornerback Paulson Adebo announced he’d be coming back, even though he graded out as a first round pick. Adebo’s decision, especially, seems to indicate that Shaw hasn’t lost the team.

Anyway, this is probably more than anyone here was interested in reading, but those are my thoughts. This fall will be really interesting as Shaw deals with significant adversity — and loudening critics — for the first time in his career. Stay tuned.

Don’t forget tonight’s 7:00 tip-off time. Enjoy every minute as 3rd Tinkle single handedly dribbles through heavy traffic, surprises his team mates with unexpected passes and launches off-balance last second three pointers, as dad watches and encourages from the sidelines.

    • As well as the 1pm tip-off for WBB. Get ready to enjoy tough D, an offensive identity, and a team that could make history with a win.

          • 14 points at the half doesn’t sound at all like a #1 team. I can see being down at the half, but 14 points?!?

27-19 last I checked. I hope they pull out the win.

        • If you do watch, keep an eye on the two freshman posts. Jones needs to stay out of foul trouble; Brown hasn’t shown as much offense as Jones, but she is (at least) equal to Jones on D.

Realtor has her gals believing after that come from behind win over nike,
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Beavs first L today, won’t be the end of things if they pick up an L this early in the season. Note that ASU was unranked to start the weekend, they are coming on strong and may finish in the top 3 of the PAC, Should be a great game.

This could be the day TO’s catch up on the good gals.

          • “won’t be the end of things if they pick up an L this early in the season.” Agree. Turnovers. I don’t see them winning over either Stanford or the ucks. Charley hyphenated last name would rest her players with an occasional fresh platoon – Not sure why Rueck didn’t leave Maddy Washington in the game for longer.

          • @helmsley
Surprisingly, the 15 TO’s vs ASU was slightly below the season average. Not that that wasn’t a contributing factor, but poor shooting was a larger part of the problem.

I think the “good girls who shoot 3’s” thing is true and bites them vs a very physical team like the forks/tridents. Poor shooting was largely due to ASU D; 25% points under the season average for 3’s and 15% points under for all FG’s.

Agree on Washington, she’s come a long way from the foul prone days of yore.

        • I wasn’t able to watch, but so much for that…
Just looking at the schedule it looks like the women beat up on OOC teams and things have gotten tighter in conference (except for Utah). Suggests they might not be as good as the record. I’ll have to watch them soon.

  46. Anyone watching the NFL game? The Texan’s HC was reckless in calling a fake punt on 4th down with a 21-7 lead. Totally backfired and now they went from up 21-0 to down 28-24 at the half.

Dumb as a rock call, but he might be able to hide under the guise of “I was just being aggressive!” since people are forgiving that these days.

  47. If anyone is part of PO, interesting post going about George Mendazona from the baseball team. His mom does not hold back. Hard to tell who’s telling the truth. Supposedly the baseball program is not about family and pushes players out trying to get their scholarship money. I don’t understand how that all works.

  48. How the hell does Sean Miller still have a job after all the crap they found out going on at UA? I guess the NCAA does not bother handing down any penalties at all anymore.

    • Had a 5+ minute dry spell near the end of the first half but other than that, they played hard the entire game. Certainly less talented than AZ but they outworked them. Why can’t they bring this intensity every game???

    • 2
      1

Inconsistency is a sign of a poorly coached team.

They beat Colorado and Arizona. But lose to Utah and ASSU? Buffs and Cats are CLEARLY the better teams amongst them.

Throw the Ass To Mouth loss in there as another head scratcher.

      • not necessarily true about inconsistency and coaching. Sometimes it’s about match-ups and ASU was the much more athletic anduch quicker team. OSU didn’t have an answer for the ASU PG and he was the difference maker in the game. It’s certainly possible to design a game plan to negate the best player but you have to have the talent in terms of athletic and quick players to do that and OSU didn’t.

        • Fair point on matchups.

But by your assessment above how in the hell did ASSU get blown out by 30 vs Arizona last weekend???

Good teams find ways to overcome those matchup obstacles. Good teams that are well coached especially.

          Was aTm a bad matchup?

I’ve seen enough of Tinkle that I stand by my statement.

I’m also extremely concerned about their ability to judge and recruit talent. Who of the current underclassmen do you see that are Pac-12 caliber players? After the coaches sons are gone I don’t see much. Do you?

          • im not a tinkle fan either but each game is different. Heck ASU ladies lost to Arizona at ASU and then sweeps the ducks and beavs while AZ gets swept at home by ducks and beavs. Is ASU poorly coached because they lost at home to AZ, of course not. Some teams have off nights and on nights especially teams that are, just good but not great. OSU MBB team is good but not great. They don’t have superior talent to tinkle I’d probably getting asuch out of the talent that he does have. Biggest problem I see is players do not develop and improve under tinkle, with maybe a few exceptions, and that’s his biggest challenge in running this program. He’s a good coach but he ain’t great. As beaver fans we might not like to admit it but Dana Altman is a great coach and his teams improve as the season progresses. I’m I’m favor of change but OSU probably can’t afford a buyout. They’re stuck with a decent coach and mediocre talent.

          • @WSN, he may get a Roberto Nelson like player who scores at a good clip but not a complete team. I agree. I don’t see the talent either. And when he had some other better talent he couldn’t make it work and they left for different reasons. Who’s in the pipeline at the center position? Or 3? Right now those backups are decent role players. Maybe Hunt and Lucas will be the future backcourt. They pretty much have to be.

  49. Like I said early on this team is so inconsistent… When they are on and play with effort, they light teams up… The talent is there, just got to play this way more often… I think this game may be the one that pushes them to play consistent… That’s my hope anyway, I have a feeling I’ll be pulling my hair out again soon unfortunately lol

  50. An s-i pundit on Houston’s fake punt: “Houston’s Fake Punt Call Was Fine: They had the look, Daniel Sorensen just made a great play. Here’s the thing with people who obsess over “momentum”: The Chiefs didn’t score points because of “momentum”—“momentum” isn’t really a thing. The Chiefs scored points because the Texans were and are 100% incapable of stopping them—the two stops to open the game were complete flukes. Houston needed to be aggressive to win this game (regardless of the terrible decision to settle for three on a fourth-and-inches on the previous drive). A fake punt, when you have the look, is properly aggressive.”

While I think “momentum” is a thing, I think the point about the real issue being Houston’s D sounds accurate when you consider:

“Remember, Kansas City only punted on their first two possessions because of third-down drops by wide-open receivers. After that, Houston forced one more punt then yielded seven consecutive touchdown drives. This Houston secondary, one of the NFL’s worst, with no pass-rush to bail it out, had zero chance of stopping Patrick Mahomes on Sunday.”

Didn’t look like KC could stop Houston’s offense either — or at least not until Houston got desperate going for it on 4th downs, etc. You have a 24 point lead, bad coaching and bad play led to the comeback. Thought Houston drove the ball well enough throughout the game, just got into an afraid-to-lose mindset.

  51. Funny perspective from an Arizona board:

    “We’re really getting blown out…
BY FUCKING OREGON STATE. This is just embarrassing”

“Didn’t they kick our ass in football too?
They have half the budget that the Dave Heeke squanders at the UA on Sumlin and Miller”

  52. Can’t help but think of the Patriots, when I read this shit….sports organizations across the board are desperate to get ahead and “win” championships no matter the cost. Me thinks the Ducks will be discovered doing the same types of things at some point — just too much money involved to not Break Bad eventually.
    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/columnist/dan-wolken/2020/01/13/lsu-booster-scandal-overlooked-tigers-play-national-title/4434233002/

    • I will be rooting for Clemson tonight. For many reasons:
      1. They can beat Alabama
      2. They can beat Alabama
      3. They are not in the SEC. Cool that they are from one of the lower Power 5 conferences.
      4. I like their Coach. Seems like a good guy to me and is smart. Makes me think of Niner a little.
      5. Nice to see a School that is not really known for their athletics become a football powerhouse. Gives me hope for Oregon State.
      6. Love the QB’s long golden locks.

      • There is no comparison between Clemson and OSU from a fan/booster support perspective. Clemson has always been in a different league from OSU in that regard.

On a related note, it wouldn’t be shocking at all for it to come out that they have plenty skeletons in their own closet similar to LSU, Ohio State, etc.

        • I would imagine nearly all institutions (including Oregon State) have skeletons in their closet. Would anyone be shocked? Given Clemson’s football success the last 5 years I would imagine their Booster support is at an all time high.

          • I lived in the area for a while. Even when they were mediocre, they were very well supported. In South Carolina, Clemson and USC are the only games in town so they always draw well.

          • If we can turn the corner in football, and I think we are getting close, it should make a real difference in support. With the football team being down the last 6 seasons and mbb being down the last 25 years and little improvement in athletic facilities from 1960? to 1997?(valley football center was about this time I think) OSU dug itself a very deep hole.

    • Reminds me that Sean Miller is still coaching, with no punishment. Astros and Red Sox will be still be World Series champions even if they are punished but the teams they cheated against get nothing. Yep, keep cheating because in the end it doesn’t really matter.

    • The mention of LSU booster scandal involving a hospital charitable foundation brought to mind the fact that F.King Alexander had, among his duties at LSU, responsibility for supervising the management of charity hospitals which were under the LSU umbrella.

The hospital involved was one of those which, in 2016, transitioned to a public-private partnership. The embezzlement by the booster took place over a 7 year period beginning in 2012 and was discovered by auditors in 2018. F.King became president of LSU in 2013, so you could say that much of the crime took place on his watch.

A stretch to put any blame on F.King, but he was the top guy. The top guy in a job which the previous chancellor said “… is the most political place on the planet, and King Alexander found that out when he ran into political strife of some prominent people in this community…”

    • Just took a look at GoMightyCards and saw this https://www.gomightycard.com/2012/12/gmc-book-club.html

“I write this blog during the wee hours of the night, but by day I am a mild-mannered middle school English teacher — ironically enough, at a place called Stanford Middle School. I teach all types of students, some of whom might end up at Stanford University one day, but today I want to talk to you about a group of 8th grade students that is close to my heart.

My seventh period class is made up of the 23 lowest readers in the school. Many of them had not read a book on their own before coming into my class, but in their second year in my room — third year for a handful of them — many of them are seeing the light and discovering the joy of reading.”

Hank doesn’t ask his readers for contribution, but instead to donate books to his classroom for this group of struggling students.

Great way to say “thank you” for this yearly contributions to AngryBeavs, (many options for under $10)

  53. I swear Angie must read angrybeavs. She summarizes the current state of the 2020 class here and covers scholarship counting, transfers, remaining targets for the 2020 class, etc.
All topics we’ve discussed in detail here, but it’s summarized to keep everything current. Notice she has even removed Kyle Juergens from the prospective targets list.

One area I differ, she says walkons can be converted to scholarship without counting against your 25, as long as they have 1 year as a walk on under their belt. She’s a little off. The rules require the walkons to have 2 years in the program before they can be extended a scholarship without it counting toward the 25 total.
Also, a question mark is the status of Quillen. I’m not sure if he is going to get a scholarship spot or not.

Long story short, Treyshaun Harrison, Morano. Griffin and Tanuvasa are remaining players who we could see OSU land. Tanuvasa is likely mission bound and wouldnt count toward anything official, but would boost the 247 class ranking a little.

I also wouldn’t count out a WSU player flipping like Julian Ripley.

It wouldn’t be a football weekend retrospective without this: Pete Carroll punts, never gets the ball back, loses. Smith made the right call.

    • I didnt watch the game. How is it comparable to the Smith Q4 decision?
Was Carrol ahead? Did Green Bay score on an 80 plus yard sub 1 minute drive after the punt to steal the win?

      • The call was questionable, but done all the time in the NFL. The bigger issue is that they let a lot of time run off before punting. That was MR like stupidity.
Pack wins……..I’m happy and can tease all the Viking fans. All good!

        • I think the bigger issue is you have Aaron Rodgers on the other side. For that reason alone go for it. No way that guy doesn’t get a measley 10 yards in the clutch to seal the win. If you have Sam Darnold on the other side you punt there. I’d never give Rodgers the ball in that type of situation. Plus you have Russell Wilson who is equally clutch and no slouch.

    • I actually thought Pete made the wrong call at the time. Just like I thought Smith did at the time, though they were completely different reasons and circumstances.

Herm Edwards made some of the worst calls in all of football this year, and he got away with it due to, “I was just being aggressive” being a response the media and fans eat up right now. That paradigm will eventually change and fans/media won’t accept it as the stupidity becomes so obvious it overrules the machismo of “being aggressive”.

Like everything in life, time and place for aggressive and conservative.

I respect you and your opinion, but neither of us is going to change our minds on that Smith call, so repeating it is pointless. Everyone has made up their mind on the call at this point.

      • He made the right call last night……for the Packers.
It allowed the Packers to win and bring happiness to this NFL owner. I was praying for a punt and Cheatin’ Pete delivered.
The third down throw to D Adams was spectacular. Jimmy Graham has been worthless this year and was responsible for one of their losses. He finally made a play.

        • Life long Seahawks fan and I feel your Jimmy Graham pain. Expected big things from him coming from the Saints thinking he was going to be all pro caliber and really help take some pressure off of Russ. Never lived up to the hype.

          • He sucked! Dropped easy catches all year. Never seen such a huge guy go down so easily.
I am amazed they brought him back this year.

          • As a Niners fan, I thought Graham made it due to his lower body being ontop of the defender allowing the official to mark the spot of the ball once he was completely down. Tough call though.

      • Why is this even a question?

Seattle’s problem was they fell behind 21-3. That’s tough to overcome on the road in a playoff game at Lambeau.

Ever since Carson and Penny were lost for the season the Seahawks running game was trash. When the offense is one dimensional its tough to win. It’s why they lost 3 of their last 4 heading into the playoffs.

I also failed to understand why the Seahawks never tried running to the outside. Every designed run play went directly into the line. Where were the jet and toss sweeps?

Their failure to get off the field on 3rd down was also a problem. Packers went something like 10 for 14 on 3rd down conversions.

We already saw what SF did to the fudge packers several weeks ago on Sunday night. I suspect that will happen again next Sunday.

If the Chiefs, who had one of the worst run defenses in the nfl all season, don’t figure out a way to stop Derrick Henry then its going to be a boring SF/Tennessee superbowl.

    • It was 4th and 11 at Seattle’s 36 with 2.41 left, Punting was the right call with 3 timeouts plus the two minute warning remaining. IF Wilson wasn’t sacked and picked up a few yards on 3rd down, maybe you go for it on 4th at 3 from the 44.

Because of an incomplete pass and Adam’s going out of bounds, the Seattle’s defense had 2 opportunities to stop the Packers on 3rd and long and get the ball back with plenty of time.

Agree with Pete, Still disagree Smith.

Things I disagree with Pete on.
      – Offense play calling in the first half – Wilson is the only thing that has worked since they lost Penny/Carson, why did it take until halftime to let him loose.
      – Defense Scheme – you have to move your best corner (Griffin) to shadow Adams. I know Seattle never does this and it was one of the biggest knocks on Sherman being the best corner in the NFL during his time with Seattle because he didn’t shadow the teams best receiver, but Adam’s was killing them all day.

  55. AP basketball rankings. Beavs getting a few votes to be in top 25 consideration

    Others Receiving Votes: Iowa 88, Stanford 77, Arkansas 65, Indiana 50, Virginia 41, Penn State 36, LSU 30, Arizona 20, Wisconsin 19, Liberty 11, Northern Iowa 10, Purdue 10, Duquesne 9, Washington 9, TCU 8, Rutgers 8, Virginia Tech 5, Oregon State 4, Houston 4, BYU 3, East Tennessee State 2, Saint Mary’s 1, Harvard 1, Akron 1, USC 1

    • Does anybody know how scholarships work for players given an extra year(or redshirt years) by the NCAA?
Does the school automatically extend their scholarship for an extra year? What happens if a player is granted an extra year but the school doesn’t want the player to return?
The cost of covering the athlete for 6 years vs 4 seems pretty significant, plus it limits how many additional players you can sign.

  56. Do you think she just doesn’t realize she’s saying the same stuff? Even the wording is suspicious.

I dug into the NCAA manual and do the scholarship math for remaining spots in the #GoBeavs 2020 class. https://t.co/Id81yUzBoS

And then the first comment echoes almost exactly what I asked above about Gumbs and the 6th year. Cue the Twilight zone music…

“Curious how Gumbs coming back will affect scholarships? In general, do you know how say a player get 5 years or 6 affects scholarship money and amount of players a school can sign?”

      • I’m not sure a blowout is reasonable to expect. The big difference I think is Orgeron’s lack of experience on this stage. The two week layoff, additional attention and buildup might affect them.

      • It should be a great matchup. These two and tOSU were way better than the rest this season.
Hate the SEC, but Like Coach O. Was there ever a more perfect fit for a school? F. King no! they seem to be the team of destiny. USC f’d that up.
Dabo seems to be legit decent guy, but getting sick of their success.
This shows the importance of recruiting. Both are always at the very top.

  57. Beavers WBB fall to #8. One article on msn sports said ASU had one of “greatest weekends in DI WBB history” when it beat #2 UO then #3 OSU. Stanford #3, UO # 6, ASU moved to #18.

    • Luck O da Beavs. The injuries to Tudor and Corosdale, coupled with whatever is going on with Aquino has made a potentially great team, simply a very good one.
Scott R’s warts is dealing with pressure D.

  58. Nice Clemson scores first. F the SEC.
I think there’s both SEC bias (Nationally and in general) and then “recency bias” because of all of LSU’s recent blowouts. Both of these skewed the line, IMO. We’ll see how the rest of the night goes, but I don’t see an over matched team in Clemson. In fact they’ve looked better in every facet so far.

  59. Good game so far. Can’t stand any of these teams, but I can appreciate some drama and crisp ball.

Both teams must have consulted with Ed Ray because they brought their A games.

        • That goes without saying

My point was during the CK days they were on par with the nations best. Now with Mario not so much no matter what their myopic fan base thinks.

          • On par with the nations best?

How many “natties” did they win?

How many times did they play an SEC team and lose?

And furthermore, they couldn’t even cheat like the SEC and not get caught.

Try and cheat as they might, they weren’t elite like the cheating SEC elites were.

They were “west coast elite”. But compared to the SEC? Still amateurs.

  60. Think it was my junior year, was in the MU in line at panda behind Stephen Jackson. He’s rapping with a girl, turns around and tells me “party at her house tonight” in an invite way.

Also, was a underachieving business major, which required you minor in something, so I heard all the athletes had to were sociology majors because it’s the easiest. So I minored in sociology and sat next to Derek Anderson a class…dudes a big man.

      • Ate there all the time. Moevao would get 2 tripple orange chickens everyday and he would yell at the absolute legend cashier Alice from the front door. She would always have his order up before he got to the counter. Never forget that dude yelling, “Allllllllliiiiicccceeeee” across the whole eating area.

Just think what this thread would have turned into, if Jack was still with us, when Trump walked on the field.
He would have broke the internet.

    • He did as stand up special called “and laughter for all” about 15 years ago. Watch it. Its fucking hilarious.

      Jim Brueur that is.

  62. Hey ChuckTheMouth, I just saw your comment in the spam folder and moved it to this thread. It wound up being the first comment. Sorry about that.

    • Yes, terrible call on a big play. Commentators were complimenting them all night until that call. Of all the games, why did they have to officiate with such logic on the national stage.

  63. I like how LSU has been protecting their lead and leveraging their advantage with great clock-management. Every snap since mid-3rd quarter has been held till under 5 seconds on the play-clock.

    Hope JS is taking notes.

  64. Good call those of you who called a blowout.
This Beav is headed to bed. Can’t believe I wasted 3hrs of my life watching Clemson and LSU. Ugh. No drama/payoff. Not worth it.

      • Don’t be so sure he has turned around Hawaii and they will be running the same type of offense. My guess is they continue at the same level of success (6-8 wins)

        • He was able to seel Hawaii to P5 transfer retreads because, well….who doesnt want to spend a year or 2 on the islands? Plus he had some history there.
Not sure how he’s going to spin WSU to recruits.
At Hawaii he was able to compete because he was getting better talent than most other conference teams. He won’t have that at WSU.

Should make for some high scoring Pac12 games though.

        • I doubt he has Leach’s ceiling of 10 wins, with consistent threats of 8-9.

I agree with Angry. This is a good hire for OSU.

I’m seeing UW and WSU in coaching transitinos, UO without a proven QB, Stanford on the downslide, USC rendered average….Gebbia, Jefferson, a returning Hamilcar, Speights, JC DBs and JC D lineman, if the O line can improve, next year is a real opportunity to move up.

The beavers damn near had 8+ wins this year. Next year is going to be unpredictable in the Pac, but the Beavers will be very watchable. I’d love a Holiday Bowl.

    • At $3 million per year too. I know Smith got a raise but OSU is going to have to step up a little more to play big boy football.

    • Hm. Air Raid to Run and Shoot. That should at least keep from a 4 year personnel tear down and rebuild. It could work depending on who else he brings in as assistants. Agree he’s probably 6-8 wins.

The championship looks like the super bowl used to; two week delay, blowout. This is not good for college football or campuses, it is good for ESPN and other networks.

Change pre-season and league scheduling. Eliminate thecream puffs in the preseason and in the last week or two of the season. Everyone play the same number of conference games if you want in on the “playoffs.” Don’t use ranking systems other than for entertainment.

Then this might get interesting for more than the fan bases of two conferences.

      #overreaction Tuesday.

It was a really good first half, mostly good third quarter. Bad PI call kept it a blowout. Pretty entertaining game with many good individual plays.

If you are writing about it then I’m guessing you were/are interested and watched the game. I was more interested in that game than the pac-12 champ game by a long shot.
