Hey all.
The halibut promotion was a nice success. Sold a few handful. If any other AB businesses want to work an arrangement like that, write me. Glad to help during these difficult times.
Moving forward, let’s do a general thread for a bit. Try not to flip your wig. Let’s shoot for a sane, civil discussion of anything. I know there’s not much to discuss sports-wise, so it will be challenging. Covid is affecting AB in that people are being turned off by all the political stuff. Not much I can do about that? When sports return I imagine top discussion will return, too.
Posted some sports updates in the last thread so I’ll add them here to start this off non-politically.
Beavs have picked up Cal WR transfer Ricky Walker III(hat tip AKBeav for the info). Not sure, bit didnt we have a Ricky Walker play football for OSU in the past?
Follow Ricky here: https://mobile.twitter.com/RDub_3
Also, Greg Biggins has a crystal ball for 2021 Los Angeles CB Arnez Madison to commit to OSU.
And Jaylen Martin, our most recent commit, has been upgraded from 0 start to…..wait for it……middle of the road 3*.
Beaver bump is undefeated. #GoBeavs
And first!
Well, technically 2nd
What was Walker’s star rating as a recruit?
I’m seeing a guy with that name who is listed as a Safety. Is that the same guy?
Same guy. Originally was a Hawaii commit at Safety. No star rating on 247 profile.
Didn’t have many catches at Cal, but one was a really nice TD vs the Beavs last year. Go figure.
https://247sports.com/Player/Ricky-Walker-46044679/high-school-197599/
My bad, wasn’t a TD. But a nice catch.
Was put on scholarship last year, so I guess that means he’s on scholarship here too? Not sure we needed more WR depth so not sure why he was added to the roster.
I’m wondering if he is coming more for a grad program than the football aspect? Total speculation based on the fact we are pretty set at WR.
Twitter profile says “OSU WR”
Only thing that I can think of is maybe Harrison had his waiver denied(which would be totsl BS given some of the waivers that have been granted this Summer)
Or just J. Smith teying to get some more OSU alum bloodlines involved with the team. We also had James Allen’s son join as a walkon this summer.
Can’t take credit for the Walker info as I saw it on a Beaversedge post.
Anybody have fond memories of Fall camps with high hopes, and possibilities of Pac 8/10/12 glory? It might be fun to hear some stories from guys who attended previous fall camps and have a good story or two. Since we don’t have fall football to gear up for in the Pac 12.
Anyone think there is a slight possibility that Big 10/Pac 12 change their minds on the shutdown/postponement? I’m guessing they are linked through discussions with the Rose Bowl committee to extricate the Rose Bowl from the BCS contracts etc. In that case, both conferences are inseparable and will at least have an Easter Rose Bowl, as ridiculous as that may be.
If SEC/ACC/BIG 12 are playing all fall and issues with covid don’t get crazy, the pressure on the Big 10/Pac 12 to resume asap will be huge, but the ship will have already sailed.
I have a COVID-19 question to throw out there for anyone who follows this in Oregon. I noticed that Gov.Brown has taken Marion County (Salem) off of the watch list yesterday which I guess is good because one of my kids is going to play fall baseball down there, but I’ve noticed that they typically have almost double the daily cases (triple yesterday) as their neighbor Clackamas County.
I’m not understanding why they are in phase two and Clackamas County has been stuck in phase one for weeks now? I may opt him out because it seems weird that we are traveling weekly to play in a county that has significantly more cases than the one where his team is from and where they are not allowed to play games according to guidelines.
The Marion County numbers were skewed by an outbreak of 67 cases at an Alzheimer’s facility. Supposedly some twenty workers showed up and were allowed to work after testing positive. A number of the residents have died. That’s apt to be on hell of a lawsuit.
You should be OK at Volcano Stadium given normal precautions. Be advised that if you are there in the evening the famous Keizer wind comes up from the river and the temperature plummets, have a jacket, sweatshirt and blanket in the car.
I think they might play at the Keizer Little League facility or maybe McNary High School. Good point on the cases, but it seems like the high Marion County numbers have been going on for a while now. Clackamas had less than 20 cases yesterday and Marion had almost 60. I think some of it must be Brown’s insistence on lumping Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties together.
Brown’s head is too far up her ass to know what she should do in any given situation. That’s why there is a recall effort going on.
Recall is going nowhere. They have no answers, just whining.
The recall seems to pushed by uninformed people. Or at least when I ask why she should be recalled, they don’t have any specifics.
I guess I’m “uninformed”.
I must be completely ignorant.
So why should she be recalled?
Cap & trade, how she’s handled the mess in Portland w/the riots, how she’s handling the “pandemic “, the mess at the employment dept, her neglect of rural communities, her basic orange man bad attitude that has her doing the exact opposite of anything he says, turning Oregon into a sanctuary state,New taxes for the whole state that only help Portland, anti gun rhetoric, trying to make Oregon socialist. That’s just off the top of my head. I guess you could say I really don’t like her.
You can add the $2 billion business tax that is supposed to go to schools but will undoubtedly go to fund the PERS deficit that WE were not allowed to vote on.
I’ll be shocked if schools see one red cent of it now.
Executive order granting driver’s licenses to illegals. After Oregonians have voted this down more than once.
Wolf in sheep’s clothing and It’s still mind boggling the Portland ignoramuses Re-elected her.
I guess it’s not since many of these Brain dead morons continue to protest over a false narrative.
Oregon’s sanctuary law has been in place since ’87. A governor can’t change the economy where the state controls the means, production, and distribution of goods and production. The Orange Man is bad, so her applying checks and balances from a state level should be appreciated by people who like that kind of thing. Off the top of my head.

There are massive floods occurring in southern China because of torrential rains. It’s very unlikely but if the rain doesn’t let up, there’s a small chance that the Three Gorges Dam could be breached. There are also structural issues with the Dam, with changes in the foundation.
https://nypost.com/2020/08/22/rainfall-causing-record-flooding-from-chinas-yangtze-river/
300-400 million people live down river and a large portion (think 30%) of the worlds poultry and rice apparently. Could be the final blow to the world economic system as we currently know it, along with major famine
I’ve been following a thread on another site about this. Its been going on for more then a month, scary shit if you’re Chinese and live down river.
Surf’s Up Brahhh!?!?!!
https://jbhandleyblog.com/home/2020/7/27/lockdownlunacythree
This post about covid-19 hit the net on July 28. Excellent reading with many links. Lots of facts, graphs, and yes, science. According to this guy along with several others this thing is pretty much over. Has some pretty strong arguments against the lock downs.
I don’t understand why people can’t learn from history that’s not even 2 months old.
1) He completely ignores that death rate has been cut by more effective treatment and proper supplies. Just using ventilators as a last ditch effort and adding proning 3 hours a day has had a huge impact.
2) He makes no mention for the impact of distancing and masking. When those precautions are taken seriously numbers drop. When they are not the numbers are not good. See correlations between red states and infection rates.
3) Last time shit like this got popular we went from 17k daily infections to 80k and about 60k people have died. How about we just take the pandemic seriously. The difference between the US and most of the world is we have been incredibly irrational and our reward is shit economic policy, suffering and death.
How do we know which masks work and if at all? People are wearing masks that don’t help at all due to the material being used. People are wearing the same masks over and over.
https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/early/2020/08/07/sciadv.abd3083
Interesting. I hope he is correct. Thanks for posting it.
I hope he is also though im afraid it will not matter.
In late July it was “pretty much over” while this country was averaging about 1k deaths per day. And now it’s late August and we’re averaging about 1k deaths per day.
Nailed it!
Now the 3rd leading cause of death in the US this year behind heart disease and cancer, which both had a 2-3 month head start.
I’m not for lockdowns, but totally agree with Nuc about the need to take this thing seriously. It’s not close to being over.
Heck, even the president’s brother died from it, if I’m to believe everything I read on the internet.
I don’t think anyone on that link is not taking it seriously. The whole crux of it was a virus is going to do what it is going to do- as in run its course. Its become painfully obvious that masks don’t work. Remember the first month or 2 we were told masks will do no good. And then all of a sudden they were “going to save lives”. But even after we were told we should wear them and though many started, the infection rate climbed. Why? Because they don’t work. And the virus is going to do what its going to do- infect people and kill mainly the old and sick. And then still be here forever- because its a virus- it wont go away. You have a yearly shot given if you want it that might, maybe, keep you from one of the flu’s that yearly come through during mostly winter months. Are we to stay masked up forever? It is so crazy that my 9 year old grandson has to wear a mask to play flag football. I call BS. And I do take it seriously- I don’t want it but it has never been serious enough to harm our children emotionally, millions of people financially, and a number yet to be known of how many were hurt by not being able to have any medical treatments or procedure taken care of. I myself could not have a cardioversion procedure for 5 months in a hospital that has hundreds of beds and that during that 5 months had a total of 14 covid hospitalizations. (That is a number given directly from someone that is employed there). I’m sure you can understand the frustration of me having to wait. Again, I don’t doubt the possible seriousness of the virus if you get it but I question the response to it and now the continued lockdown amid the falling death and infection rate. Time to take the mask off and open the state back up.
Masks reduce the rate of spread. Quit pushing mis-information.
Then why, for the first month or 2, were we told that masks dont work? Thats not mis-information.
Misunderstanding the difference between “prevent” and “reduce” seems to be an issue.
A mask will not 100% prevent you from catching or transmitting the disease. Especially one that is poorly fitting and/or made from low grade materials.
A mask will help “reduce” the spread of the disease. Even a bandana hanging over your face will help, because it limits the amount of saliva you expell when you are around other people.
I can’t believe this is still a topic.
Corona rides on droplets. I’m not a scientist or doctor but it seems to this simple minded person that a mask will slow the spread of droplets and thus slowing the spread of Corona. I say make everyone wear a mask in public and open everything back up… the country is dying because of Corona and not from getting the virus but economically.
If lockdowns and masks work, why did new infection rates not plummet within two weeks of the imposition of the mandates? Two weeks being the longest incubation period.
Is that true? Rates declined through May and then George Floyd happened and thousands of people took to the streets and numbers spiked again. People in this countey weren’t good at following the mandates. I don’t blame the masks for that.
Look at Italy, which had more extreme lockdown and masking mandates. Infection rates plummeted and stayed down. Go figure.
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/italy/
This will be my last Covod19 related post in this thread because I’m pretty sure all of this has been discussed to death in prior threads and we’re going in circles again. Good times.
Because mandates and compliance are two different things? We know when the rules were set and changed, but we really have no idea how well (if at all) they were being followed.
From a common sense perspective, masks help. It’s all about probability. Any face covering, no matter how porous, is better than nothing. Any material between your face and others will capture some amount of droplets. Just like keeping more distance between yourself and others will always help. 6′ is a rule of thumb but it’s ultimately an arbitrary number.
I have real concerns about the coronavirus approach, and especially the endgame and how we go back to normal life. I do think that the risk is pretty exaggerated for people without risk factors (notably age). I was anti-lockdown from the start, and thought that the conversation should always have been along the lines of “how do we do xyz safely”, not “should we shut down xyz.”
But the easiest answer to that question? Masks. Yeah they can be inconvenient but c’mon they’re not that bad. As far as I’m concerned, it’s far and away the best “bang for the buck” in terms of controlling the virus while minimally impacting quality of life, economy, etc.
It’s hard to know who Has died from it, died with it, and who might have Died with it but because they were tested within 60 days (each state is using different guidelines) and then died that it was considered a Covid death. The definition of stats is very important and often overlooked.
No, but you can get a pretty good answer as to totals. Look at the typical death tolls of the same time period for a given locale, over the past few years both the average and variances. Then compare that with the current counts. If you’re in the same ballpark, chalk it up to chance. If you’re far enough above the mean, then the excess is almost certainly due to COVID-19.
@nb just curious where you saw trump bro’s death was due to Covid:
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/15/us/politics/robert-s-trump-dead.html
I think your “believe everything on the internet” was a little tongue and cheek :)
Yes, tongue in cheek. Cause of death was never announced and the ICU at the NY Prys hospital where he was taken is a Covid19 unit, so lots of speculation. Conspiracy theories are all the rage these days.
(I don’t consider this a source, but just a small example of what I mean)
https://newsone.com/3996226/robert-trump-cause-death-coronavirus-speculation/
If we are going conspiracy theory I’d go hereditary dementia, I could see Don wanting to keep that quite.
I’m a bit concerned about AB. We bring in near zero revenue, and today someone canceled their recurring, monthly donation. I can’t afford to spend time on something that doesn’t generate revenue to at least sustain itself. Just too many demands on my time and energy. Renewal is due in January. And now with no football traffic will be down. The political bickering turned people off, too. Not looking good.
We’ll see…
Just give us the dollar amount you need over the next few months and we’ll come through. Like a Jerry Lewis telethon. I’m sure some of the talent in here could post videos.
Only if he posts a video of himself singing show tunes.
What is the annual cost?
With the Walker transfer I wonder if he might move back to db for the Beavs. It would only make sense for him to play WR if he was over 6ft since they don’t have any height at the position which he isn’t. Hopefully he isn’t on scholarship with us but maybe Smith is just trying to balance out the numbers in the classes.
Watched the Mavs Clipper game last night. Luka Doncic really could be the next generational player.
Let’s see how they spin this one:
https://sports.yahoo.com/tcu-qb-max-duggan-out-indefinitely-after-health-condition-discovered-144237799.html
Pretty easy PR,
“Due to enhanced medical protocols, we were able to diagnose and treat this condition before it became serious. We are doing these checks with all athletes in order to play safely in this upcoming season.”
“Good thing you have me here to keep you safe!”
Love,
The Man
I think thats what that player who died a few years ago in Dixon had. It seems about every year we hear of someone in high school or college dying from an undiagnosed heart defect.
Fred Thompson was the player. Chai Baker also was diagnosed with a heart condition and wasn’t cleared to play at OSU.
Likely what is holding up Aquino for the women’s team.
Since Thompson, OSU does heart checks. Not sure if any other schools do it regularly.
That really sucked. He was my lab buddy in a geography class when he died. He was a really genuine guy and had an absolutely absurd grill with big canine teeth. That was a big loss in so many ways.
Couple quick questions for you guys:
1. How much stuff (estimate) do you buy from China?
2. Do you ever consider buying local/US over China, or do you just go for price?
3. When you buy something from China, how do you feel about it? i.e. indifferent, positive, negative, etc.
I’m not sure if you’ve seen it, but China has opened much of their economy, and they’re booming. Expected to be the only economy that grows in 2020, and they are now expected to surpass the US by 2028.
1. Some, but it’s usually small cheap electronic stuff. If I want higher end products I skip the Chinese crap.
2. Almost always
3. Negative, but sometimes it’s the only available option. One of the reasons I try to avoid purchasing through Amazon. So much junk on there. Inexpensive, but low quality usually.
Been this way since around the time I took some grad level accounting classes at Portland State about 15 years ago. My managerial accounting teacher really made an impression on me regarding China and their role in the world economy and US companies outsourcing through, killing our job market and wealth creation.
1. Probably most of it. I just bought an Asus computer hoping it was made in Taiwan, but it was made in China.
2. I’ve started checking much more often to see if there is an alternative made in the US (or even Mexico). It’s usually difficult to find. There are good sites that list American manufacturers by product type. If the price difference is less than ~50%, I’ll usually go for the non-Chinese product, but that’s very seldom the case.
We were looking at getting bikes for our family. The vast majority of bikes that aren’t custom/high-end for competitive riders are made in China. Supposedly a few companies do some contracting in Mexico, but I could never find confirmation of that on anyone’s website.
3. It depends on the product. I used to work for a company that sold from a variety of manufacturers in China. There are good and bad companies over there. In general, because of the business culture that has been fostered, there are far more companies that focus on production levels and volume over QC, but there are companies who do recognize the value in doing things the right way. As a consumer, you really have no way of knowing those things.
More and more I think that, rather than going all in on Made in the USA, Americans should be favoring all NAFTA products (so, really American/Mexican stuff, because Canada manufactures even less than we do). Mexico has a capable and growing manufacturing base, and it benefits us to have an economically stronger neighbor. It’s well established in economics literature that unstable countries have a negative spillover effect on their neighbors.
Detroit bikes don’t cost an arm and a leg, and are made in…Detroit. Looks like several are sold out because bikes are hot during the rona.
https://detroitbikes.com/
Question for you…why haven’t you answered the questions above regarding site cost for AB?
B/c I don’t know. Changes year to year based on what is going on. Last year I had to revamp the entire site and purchase some additional plugins to make things work as I wanted, so last year was much more expensive than normal. Hosting fees are rising, too. Also, it goes beyond just hosting costs, domain costs, and software costs, as I explained above. I can’t do anything without at least a little income from it given the demands on my time right now. AB is by far the least grossing endeavor I am involved with, so it makes the least sense in so many ways. It’s a nostalgia project at this point that people enjoy (and I like the people here), so I keep it going. But I get very little from it. At one point in my life I didn’t care, but demands and things change, so now I do.
Thanks to the few donations that came through the past few days. I’d encourage the Monthly, recurring – it’s an option under the button – for anyone considering.
Every regular commenter should be able to chip in $1/month. Seems like that would easily cover annual costs.
Exactly. Sort of. Paypal takes 33% of that, so $1 is actually .66c.
But you’re overall right. Been asking for small monthly donations from larger numbers, but it doesn’t seem to happen. Only five guys or so contribute monthly, and one just canceled. But that’s the best model. I don’t want ads, etc, unless they’re like the halibut thing to help a Beav.
Thanks. I prefer a one time payment rather than monthly as I’m now on a fixed income and can only afford it after tax refund, etc. The refund should be coming soon and I plan to donate the same amount I always do.
Cool that is no problem and totally understood.
Made me think of a friend who was a rep for several outdoor companies about 20 years ago. He said the only people that would ask where stuff was made were people from Oregon. This was when a lot of those companies were moving overseas. I have US made gear/clothing from the 90s that’s held up really well.
Some positive press for former Beaver CB Steven Nelson:
“Haden said. “There are not too many dudes that I have met that have been like Steve that have been this talented and open for coaching from another player or just information from another player. He is already a great corner.”
…
“While Haden reached his third Pro Bowl last winter, Nelson is still waiting for his first invitation despite some metrics that hint at his elite status. He actually played more snaps and allowed fewer completions for fewer yards than New England star Stephon Gilmore, the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.”

In past years CBS has hosted a college football pickem game that many of you have participated in.
Still haven’t seen any updates if they will have a 2020 pickem, but if they do, I plan to start up another “Beavrecruiting” pool.
If you think you’d be interested, I’d recommend setting up an account at CBS if you don’t already have one. There are options to keep your email private, for those who don’t want that info displayed to the group.
I’ll post the invite info in a future AB post and on the twitter feed if/when CBS starts their tournament.
https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/
Funny, I just got an email about it this morning.
Same, but I had been researching their site over the weekend teying to find a 2020 Pickem league, which turns out they havent started yet.
Figured i’d send out a message to at least get people set up with a CBS profile if they dont already have one
I’ll do it. Or even an NFL league.
I’m in. Let me know if you need my email.
First you’ll need to set up your own CBS account if you don’t have one already. After that, I’ll post a global invite link here and in the twitter feed that anybody can use to access the group.
I’m hoping they still do it. The NFL pool could be a backup option, but i’ve never played it so i’m not familiar with it’s setup. Hopefully we dont need to pivot amd go that route
So I got the call from the ticket office today about my Valley View season tickets. I went with credit for the 2021 season.
What did some of you guys pick?
Debating but leaning toward letting them keep my donation and take the credit toward next season. Help out the athletic dept if I can.
I’m guessing most people will pull back their donations but use the credit for the 2021 season.
For those of you who wear eyeglasses, having a ton of pain on my nose after getting a new (heavier) Rx…huge indents, too.
Is this normal? Everything I am reading says there should be no pain or dents. Then there are all kinds of products to get rid of dents/pain. So it seems contradictory.
Nancy.
Jake Burton, a would be UCLA OLine starter this season, announced around 11:00am he was entering the transfer portal because he wanted to find a place to play this season.
9 hours later, he tweets that he is transfereing to Baylor, complete with a freshly crafted Baylor commitment edit.
Things happen quickly, but not sure how a team gets all of thos squared away quite this quickly if they’re following the transfer rules(no contact prior to player entering the portal)

Don’t blame him at all. Any beavs that could do this? Maybe Hamilcar? Not sure if he has his degree but he could really help his draft stock especially if he plays against good competition.
Hamilcar graduated in June. Been saying for awhile he should do something similar. He has no reason to play a spring football season or stick around another full year unless he wants to complete his masters.
Apparantly Jordan Whitley has a tumor in/on his heart?
Wishing him the best in dealing with it. Hopefully this means they caught it early and it’s a treatable condition.
https://www.oregonlive.com/beavers/2020/08/oregon-state-defensive-tackle-jordan-whittley-writes-on-instagram-that-he-has-a-tumor-in-his-heart.html
Was just coming to post this, good luck to him I hope he beats it. Im wondering how they found it? Possibly blood testing for covid?
Blood tests are usually pretty specific and they normally don’t test for everything imaginable. My guess is that he had a routine ECG and there were some anomalies. That led to doing an echo-cardiogram where they could look at the blood flow through the heart. Probably saw it there. I have no proof, though.
I didn’t get any details if it is a benign growth or something worse. Anyone know?
Man that’s tough news. Hope he can make it thru this not sure what his options are. I assume he’s not going to be playing football ever again. That would be a hell of a comeback story if he did. I would think that was probably playing a big part in why his conditioning was poor.
Obviously his health is the bigger issue but that’s a tough loss for the D line. He was the only player on the roster with true nose tackle size for the 3-4. Hopefully we can find a transfer or something to fill that hole. But maybe tibs doesn’t see at as necessary for his scheme.
Good luck to him!
New commitment for football coming soon.
Arnez Washington Committed to osu about a week ago but is making it public soon.
He made it public a few minutes ago but deleted the tweet. Must have had a typo
“Madison, 6-2 and 170 lbs, plays Wide Receiver and Cornerback. He was recruited by Beavers’ Defensive Backs Blue Adams to play for that unit. ”
Keep landing those tall DBs…nice.
“Blue!!! You’re my boy!!!”
Blue has quietly become probably our most active recruiter. From what I have observed, he follows up on any and all potential recruits. I know some coaches prefer the targeted precision approach, but Blue seems to be the one getting results for OSU. Not sure how he finds the time to manager it all, but he’s done pretty well finding talent for us since coming on board.
If only our OLine recruiting could take some pointers. Seems like every giy we offer lately ends up committing to another school within a week of our offer and then it’s onto the next one. Afraid we’re offering guys too late in the game which gives them the impression that they are our 6th/7th or lower priority at the position, and the further down the list we get, the lower the talent. Eventually we’ll end up flipping a BigSky commit or someone of similar talent profile.
I feel like a lot of that had to do with the talent, depth, and transfers In the defensive backfield. It was bad when he got here so he was allowed to take more guys than other positions and overhaul the group.
247 profile for Madison.
Pretty decent offer list with Boise St, Kansas, UW and a few others. Mostly schools the Beavs should be considered comporable to. Not sure if his UW offer was still valid or if they already filled up their CB spots.
https://247sports.com/Player/Arnez-Madison-46102385/
That Washington offer was only last month so unless they moved on fast I would say it was still commitable.
Oob, you’re the man. Received the “O” hat today. Looks great and it arrived in less than 24 hours. Thank you!
Hopefully some others on here are taking you up on the offer.
Thanks for the feedback, glad you are pleased!
All the hats have been shipped or are already spoken for.
That was fast. If you want to use the twitter feed to promote more business, feel free. Or maybe this was just a 1 shot deal. Either way, glad i managed to snag one before they were gone
Are you going to do any in white? Personally, in warmer months, I a white hat for less heat.
https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/john_canzano/2020/08/canzano-pac-12-network-layoffs-and-furloughs-pass-over-commissioner-larry-scott-somehow.html
Didn’t realize Scott’s contract is up in 2022. Which probably means he’ll be gone in the next 12 months, land some fancy titled gig at some company we’ve never heard of. No way he gets re-upped and the conference won’t want a lame duck in that chair who isn’t invested in the future of the conference. The best course is let Scott take the heat for the shutdown and bring in someone knew to re-set the conference/network when COVID-19 is done.
Don’t be so sure, he has a bunch ADs that love him for some reason.
Bears RB injured in practice, clearing the way for a little more playing time for Nall or Pierce.
The top comments here are pretty interesting. Not a good look for colleges, which I rightfully predicted where in a bubble that had to pop. They’re not liking the explosion, apparently.
Starting to believe the claim that these schools only opened up with student housing so that students would enroll and the schools could get their money.
They seemed pretty quick to shut it all down.
Sounds about right. It’s the 800-pound gorilla in the room that nobody wants to admit. Schools are hemorrhaging money and they need any source of it they can get their hands on. If that means screwing over the students by making them pay full tuition and housing, then doing a bait and switch to Zoom U, then so be it. Pretty much every university president had a calendar in their offices that had the last day that tuition could be refunded circled in big red letters. Everyone knew it was going to happen, and sure enough, it happened.
The P5 schools opened up so they could play sports and now are trying to contain something they can’t control. Of course, they’ll still continue even if students are remote.

Between Covid closures, hurricanes/floods, NBA teams boycotting due to more police shooting it will be a miracle if more than a few games get played this season. Wonder how many college or NFL football players will choose to sit out like the NBA now? Last team standing wins the national championship trophy
Do they put an asterisk next to the national champion or do they use a blown up a picture of the covid19 virus and use that instead? The virus seems more appropriate.
As much as I hate the NHL leadership at times it looks like they are the only ones being successful in this mess. I have really been enjoying the playoffs even though my team is on the outside looking in. Basically they are playing in two locations that are quarantined from the outside world. Everyone got cleared free from COVID-19 before coming in and teams are kept isolated. Crowds usually play a big part in Hockey so that is being missed for sure. But outside of that it is all business on the ice. Fun to watch.
BTW, I personally have been playing a lot of golf and doing a lot of home upgrades during this pandemic. It has kept me sane even though I’m no better than an average player or handyman. Just being out in the green and fresh air or pounding something in the house can do a mind good.
NBA has been doing well too. I mean they missed a couple days for the protest but other than that it has gone off without a hitch. And honestly I don’t think the nba fan base cares that a few games were missed for protests… I think the people that would be angered by the protests stopped watching the NBA a decade or more ago.
Anyone here have Lasik?
A few family members had it and both had long-term issues afterward. Apparently regression over time is fairly normal, and now one person’s vision is worse than before (currently wearing trifocals).
I’ve also read about chronic dry eye as a potential side effect. I think there was a NYT article about it a few years ago.
Messing with eyes freaks me out, though, so I’m probably biased. Just seems like too sensitive and too important an area to play around with.
Thanks.
Not bonding with new glasses (way heavier than my old ones and leaving huge impressions). I’m going to try contacts, but I was also looking into the Lasik. Agree it’s pretty freaky having anyone mess with the eyes.
It was freaky kind of having them stand over me but it was only for like two minutes and my eyes were obviously numb. The weirdest part was the doctor telling me how they use to do it (way more invasive with a little blade) as he was basically just watching the lazer do its thing on my eyes.
I watched basketball the same day after a few hours of napping. Lots of drops for the next four or months after the procedure but way better than doing drops ongoing as I was having to with contacts. Ac, movie theaters, malls etc always sucked with contacts and I had them for about 20 years. If you have hsa funds I’d use those and get it done. My insurance isn’t good so I was spending hsa funds each year to cover some of the cost of contacts. Lasik will pay for itself over 10 years for me. You will still
Need readers at some point but seriously I forget sometimes I ever had glasses/contacts. Did I sell ya???
What type of place did your surgery? Like an individual small practice or a larger facility? Any negatives at all?
Might just go on a consult and feel it out.
I’ve had lasik. 20/10 vison the next day. Settled in at 20/20. No issues. Lasik is much much better now than it was before. Go through your eye doctor for a referral. The Lasik place I went to was partnered with my eye doctor which helped with all the pre and post surgery check appointments. It’s worth it if you’re a candidate.
Reading glasses will be necessary no matter what because eyes age regardless of surgery but far sighted vision shouldn’t regress a lot. The big benefit is the maintenance. Don’t have to remember where your glasses are, don’t need backup pairs stashed, don’t need to buy new frames if they break.
Just run a cost benefit. Cost of surgery vs roughly 5-10 years of glasses/contacts.
The risk is small if you have a good doctor. Obviously don’t use anyone who advertises a deal on Lasik.
If you don’t want your eyeball cut open, look into prk.
Basically agree with bill on everything. I used a place called tlc by Bridgeport In portland and They specialize in lasik. Worked with my eye dr down by salem to connect with them Which gave me a coupon since I did a couple consultation With my dr. My dr then communicates with the lasik center so I don’t have to worry about any of that paperwork.
Negatives I’m not really sure. I hear hallowing with lights at Night. Not noticing that myself. My eyes ha e always been sensitive so I wear sunglasses often outside. I think they were sensitive prior to the surgery.
Lifetime warranty on lasik for me. That goes with anything lasik can fix but like bill said you’ll need readers and that’s not under warranty part for me.
I have to get an annual eye exam to keep the warranty up.
“Reading glasses will be necessary no matter what because eyes age… ”
What I understand is that the proteins in our lenses harden, and they eye can’t effectively squeeze/reshape the lens to focus. They are coming out with artificial lenses now that remain soft, and that the eye can focus. Crazy.
I’d be nervous about eye surgery personally, and would just opt for glasses. But methods are definitely getting better and more reliable.
I’ve worn glasses since age 16. No issue until the latest set, which is leaving huge dents in my nose. They’re telling me it’s due to weight of this Rx…
It’s super painful.
Had lasik done a few years ago. No side affects. Super great when I am tired and don’t want to put on glasses or contacts in. Also great with having a little one. Highly recommend it.
Not that, but I’ve had lens replacement surgery on both eyes. Works well and no issues after.
Players suing as expected, but because they are not playing…
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/29753789/eight-nebraska-football-players-sue-big-ten-decision-postpone-season
If they played they’d sue, too.
Don’t they realize ‘not’ playing for Nebraska and Scott Frost saves them from being humiliated on ESPN every week?
Random Topic: Anyone ever dig into true self vs false self?
Interesting theory. How much you buy into it depends on whether you’re an existentialist or essentialist (or somewhere in between).
I tend to think we have certain core components of ourselves that don’t change, but they aren’t enough to constitute a full personality. The rest is shaped by past experiences and current circumstances.
Thanks for the reply. I am about to start digging into it. Just curious if others have done so.

Maybe Ralph Miller is offering him a smoke…. : )
I thought that Ralph was the only one who smoked More filters!
Ugh. I had a dream about Jack.
Nightmare?
Think so, but I can’t remember exactly what happened. I just know when I clicked on AB today I had an immediate reaction and remembered Jack in my dreams last night, and it wasn’t positive.
Funny coincidence, I thought of Jack last night when I drank some Ninkasi Total Domination Pale Ale. As I remember, that was one of his favorites.
For me, Deschutes Inversion is better, but not as readily available right now.
Got the boneyard RPM cans at the Lewisburg store now, those are pretty good
Cans?……haven’t had canned beer (or beer with ice cubes) since Viet Nam. More choices now and I can’t get past that tin can taste, maybe cans are better now, doubt I’ll try to find out.
I used to say “cans?” too, but now i prefer cans to bottles. Prevents sunlight from making your beer skunky over time, and they’re easier to throw to a friend who needs another.
Also, been noticing most water access areas/beaches are not allowing glass bottles anymore, so cans become a bit of a neccessity when away from home
He was critical of the way they treated employees….
Bodhizafa….
Still a fan of Block 15….
Wonder if anyone here has visited Coin Toss Brewing in Oregon City? Ron Callan mentions them on twitter, place is owned by a former sportscaster…can’t recall name.
I go there occasionally, it’s not far from my house. It’s a small taproom put they have some outdoor seating and sometimes have a food cart parked outside. You can get their beers at all the tap houses in OC. Most of it Is pretty good.
Tim Hohl is the guy you’re thinking of.
Critical of the way Ninkasi treated employees?
Ninkasi is awesome, I do quite a bit of work over there and the employees are all pretty happy.
May be thinking of Hop Valley, they’re corporate suit run and it sucks.
@obj Block 15 owner is a vary good dude
Is anyone else concerned about significant civil unrest this November – January+? I’m concerned with increasing extremism on both ends of the political spectrum, that a Trump loss – either closely contested or even if a clear loss – will result in him manufacturing doubt about the process and inciting anger. I’m really concerned about increased civil strife, greater instability, and escalation of Americans hurting/killing one another in the streets. I hope this doesn’t come to pass, but it seems to me like there’s a good chance of it if he loses. I’ve been thinking of “prepping” for the November – Spring (food and supplies storage) more so than for the pandemic.
I don’t think Trump will necessarily lose, but if he does…
Remember: “Try not to flip your wig. Let’s shoot for a sane, civil discussion of anything. “
My parents bought a gun, and they have never had any interest in such things…
They’re Trumpers big time. They think he’s going to get smoked in November, and Biden will redistribute all their wealth.
Pretty interesting to watch. In terms of concern, I’m concerned about the US no matter who wins, and that’s because of the FED destroying the currency.
Please get them some firearms training, even counseling to prepare them mentally for the moment no one wants to face.
Imho he won’t be smoked. If Biden wants to be president he better get out of his basement and start hustling votes. He is about to fall behind.
Where does the whole basement narrative come from anyway? Did DT dream it up while he was “inspecting” his bunker at the White House?
Yes. Trump’s chances of winning are pretty awful per electoral and national polling. Election to inauguration is going to be scary as he will likely lose a fair election. Considering his platform is that only he can fix the problems that he created I don’t think his popularity is going to increase.
I expect homeland security to continue to turn into his goon squad, protesting and shootings.
My base case is he loses and refuses to leave. Since he has no respect for anything, that’s the likely behavior.
Been saying that for almost a year now, though. Nothing new. But it’s all I have to add right now.
I can see the Dems tripping over their own feet, dividing themselves up with identity politics, and Trump marketing giving him another victory.
If Trump loses, he’ll be an inciting presence on Twitter for the rest of his life.
All true.
And those polls mentioned by Nuke have been wrong before. I look at it this way, those who hate Trump aren’t as likely to keep quiet in front of a pollster as are those who plan to vote for him.
How big a factor is that? Hard to say.
PS: to ObjCritic, you asked earlier about white hats. Not planning another run of hats unless there is a lot of demand here, but if I do I’d gladly include a couple white ones for you.
It’s worth a few points in state polls. Maybe a point or two so in national polls. Also depends on who’s polling and how they ask questions.
“Also depends on who’s polling and how they ask questions.”
SPOT ON!
I operate on three assumptions
1) Most people who change their mind on Trump decide to vote against him.
2) Demographics are very unfavorable. The population entering the voting pool and hitting the age where they actually start buying are very liberal and probably the most socialist generation in US history. The people who have died since 2016 are majority trump voters. Trump lost by 3 million votes and if you do the math on Boomer vote choice, death rate and Boomer engagement he lost atleast 2 million votes in the last 4 years. It’s very unlikely he gained those votes back from young voters entering the pool.
3) Engagement will be higher than 2016. If turnout is above 56% it will be awful for the GoP.
He was an unknown quantity in 2016 and people went for it. Neither he or Biden are a mystery at all now.
The polls you are referring to from 2016….there’s a much different demographic polling in 2020…primarily, in 2020 these polls are not ignoring a significant portion of his strong base supporters like they did in 2016. That demographic is mainly uneducated white males and those have been accounted for in 2020 in most of the polling. However, we do know there’s about 3-4% point margin of error in these polls and most polls show Trump trailing by 8 or more points. He’s likely to make up some ground since the RNC ended, but doubtful that he can pick up 8 points between now and November. Some will also say, well, Hillary was up too…yes, that’s true but not by 8 or more points. I think Biden wins but I guess you can never say never.
You mean similar to Clinton’s rhetoric after 2016? Lord help us if Trump loses!
But her emails!
Benghazi!!
I don’t know how we avoud civil unrest with either outcome. If he wins, people will revolt and say he cheated the system(mail fraud, bad voting machines, you name it).
If he loses, he won’t go quietly and people will revolt
I don’t see a scenario where everybody just accepts the results and just shows up for work the next day like it’s a normal Wednesday
I think this election is fascinating because everyone has their head in the sand regarding Biden’s cognitive decline. I mean, his wife is a doctor for Godsake! Just from my experience taking care of my Mom for 10 years and being around dementia-care facilities, I would guess he is at the mild stage, but many of his behaviors and mannerisms are familiar to me. Do people just not care or is the general public ignorant about dementia diseases? Would there be any scandal if he resigns early in his term or again will anybody care? It’s also such a sad commentary about our country that Biden and Trump are our choices.
I think people see it, yet don’t care, because it’s the “anyone but Trump” vote. And people realize that’s what a VP is for.
Biden can surround himself with a very competent cabinet, etc. Trump’s cabinet is an absolute disaster. I mean we have Kushner, Kudlow, et al in high positions of power. Objectively, that is flat awful. I’d take dementia at the top with competent people around the guy over that. Makes total sense if you think it out.
Agree these two as the choices is a joke, but that’s the case every election. I’m sure we all know people in day to day life who would make better Presidents than all the bozos of the past 40 years.
We have 2 candidates showing mental and physical decline. It’s pretty glaring if you watch a speech from either of these guys from 4 years ago and contrast it with a speech from today. The vacant stares, missed words, the inability to navigate a staircase or ramp gracefully, holding onto and leaning onto the podium when speaking.
Trump exhibits signs that he’s had a small stroke at some point and nobody seems concerned about that either.
Biden exhibits early signs of dementia.
Neither guy looks fit to handle 4 more years in the intense environment they would be having to navigate.
His wife has a PhD in education but I think it’s clear he’s slowing down.
Trump has dementia combined with a personality disorder. Biden is old.
“But so I think, I think it would be, I think it would be very, very, I think we’d have a very, very solid, we would continue what we’re doing, we’d solidify what we’ve done, and we have other things on our plate that we want to get done,”
Trump explaining his 4 year plan yesterday.
They’re both old! Seems to me Trump is a narcissist. Biden is exhibiting signs of mild dementia whether anyone wants to call it that or not.
Amen
Primary voters did have their chance to elect Harris as the candidate and she flamed out with her own party. It seems odd and disingenuous to me, but as you say, it’s an “anyone but Trump” scenario.
Does seem odd, but less so when you restrict your choices to “a woman of color”.
Harris doesn’t appeal to moderates. It was smart not to nominate her. I wouldn’t vote for her. But I’d vote for Biden with her on the ticket.
But you are voting for her by proxy. I don’t think Biden will last more than a couple of years, even in a “puppet capacity”
Yeah I don’t love it, but Trump has proven himself to me.
I’ll take the unknown over that.
Fair enough. I typically vote for republicans in Oregon, when I lived in Utah I voted for democrats. I like the underdogs!
Republicans in Oregon are probably considered democrats in Utah
Harris dropped out of the race December 3rd.
Iowa caucas was in February, followed by the primaries.
Primary voters never had a chance to vote for her or see where she measured up with other candidates other than in a handful of polls.
I stand corrected. I guess her internal polling was not good then?
It probably didn’t show her taking the field and I’m guessing she and the Biden campaign struck a deal back then to make her VP since he was already polling strongly, but they split some voters.
Makes sense to bow out before any primary vote, so your opponents can’t use her results against her and she didnt have to continue to argue against Biden in debates.
Wouldnt be surprised if Beto, Pete and Klobuchar have roles already lined up.
Personally, I was hoping for Susan Rice as the VP candidate, but I also think she will have a role in his cabinet.
I would pay to see Biden debate himself!
Harris’s poll numbers plummeted after Biden and Tulsi Gabbard attacked her during one of the debates (when she was a frontrunner). Unlike some of the others with more of a history in office (and more time for people to get used to their warts), she was unable to stand up to the scrutiny.
Just more evidence that the whole thing is a marketing exercise. She surged in the polls as a woman of color who could bridge the gap between moderates and progressives, but her track record in law enforcement came to be at odds with the “progressive” side of that branding and she immediately lost one of the things that distinguished her most.
I think it is funny how the left portrays the Biden Harris ticket as moderate bordering on republican and Trump calls them radical socialists. Think Trump was planning on a more liberal ticket and he doesn’t know how to adjust his game plan.
Angry have you seen Bidens 401k plan yet? All this talk about sticking up for the middle class, then they will double dip taxes on 401ks and eliminate the tax write off for businesses. Hes basically ending the company match. Good luck retiring before 80. Hes going to lose a lot of union votes on that since many have gone away from pensions to 401k deposits instead.
They are talking about doing away with the company match? What I read was making it a tax credit instead of a tax write off. So basically shifting the advantage from the upper middle class to the lower middle class. Hurts me a little especially since with having kids recently and wife working less I was feeding the Roth and was planning on feeding the traditional next tax year when we make more but I do see some sense in encouraging the lower middle class into saving for retirement since they don’t really benefit from traditional 401k’s. In fact it is kind of foolish for a lot of those people to use those vehicles over the Roth.
Ron Callan up with a wide ranging conversation with Darwin Barney, no mention of MLB2PDX.
Touches upon: golf, kids from outside Oregon, Andy Armstrong, eschewing dog pile in ’06, and the dreaded “search for clubs identity”.
24 minutes, nothing particularly noteworthy……but what are your options for Beavs Baseball news?

Angry, what are your thoughts on the Federal Reserve?
Worse than Riley.
Yikes; seems as though no one is talking about it but it’s a big issue for this upcoming election. I see Trump is appointing people to the FR who are in favor of migrating to a gold standard.
I don’t think it’s much of an issue. Alan Greenspan was the biggest gold bug on earth before he joined the FED.
Trump does like gold, but he won’t like the restrictions it puts on his profligate spending, and it seems these people are being placed more for ten years down the road when due to all this spending some type of partial gold backing will become mandatory. This is still a ten year process.
Big election issues are generally things where the candidates positions differ from one another.
these are really good interviews, definitely worth the listen

Chances pac 12 plays starting in November or January? Need a solution for the weather with all outdoor stadiums. Rent an nfl stadium and have all teams play there?
Sorry to mention sports here. Back to politics.
Am I understanding correctly that at this point, the P-12 and the Big 10 will play a conference schedule in the spring? It almost seems pointless to some degree if everyone else is playing (and I’m not saying it’s the right call) now. I don’t see how there can be a national champion or bowl games. Sort of like playing a season if the team is on probation.
There are new conversations with the big ten thinking maybe January or even Starting around thanksgiving. The thought is the pac12 could follow since they would be the only power 5 conference waiting until spring to potentially play.
RIP Uncle Cliffy.
You are proposing that the election will be closely contested and President Trump will not yield, assuming he loses. Isn’t that what we’ve been going through from the Democrats for 4 years? Aren’t the Democrats already preparing to not accept the results of this election as well? Hillary has already said Biden should not concede under any circumstances and Biden has bankrolled a small army of lawyers in various precincts to file lawsuits as soon as results come in. Maxine Waters has proposed that military leaders should make plans to remove President Trump, Al Gore says military leaders should remove President Trump on November 4. Nancy Pelosi is pushing for no debates, to allow the public to compare for themselves. Washington Post declared impeachment plans began on inauguration day in 2017 from progressive/liberal activists. President Obama’s administration has been fully exposed for spying and undermining the transition of power. Harris just said that rioting and protesting will continue even after election day. Biden is a political trojan horse, empty suit that his handlers tell what to say. He knows he isn’t up to the job and has already said his VP must be ready to lead on day 1. If Biden is so comfortably up in the polls, why is Hillary saying don’t concede?
I think President Trump is going to win in a landslide victory, at least 45 states out of 50, and the Democrats already know it.
He is a great executive leader, and it is foolish to dismiss his closest advisers as inept. He has a lifetime of surrounding himself with excellent people in order for his companies to continue to flourish as they have. He is a highly successful businessman on a worldwide scale, that didn’t happen by accident. Don’t fool yourself into thinking he has been a clever cheat for decades, that is naive. He has been in the spotlight of public scrutiny for too long as President for those things to remain hidden if that were actually true. Try to think for yourself rather than reacting to news accounts intent on creating emotional responses of hate, anger, rage etc.
LOL! Classic cult behavior/psychology! Get off the Qanon dude….better yet, take your own advice, stay off the internet if you can’t think critically for yourself. This coming from somebody who hasn’t voted Democrat in the last two cycles…..please!!!!
He’s being sarcastic, no?
If not, I’d love some odds on that. Unless he knows about imported Russian voting booths coming on a slow boat from the East, then that’s easy money.
Wow, you must be pleased to see that Kayleigh McEnany has joined Angry Beavs.

How’s the kool aid tasting Ohio beav? Visceral responses are right I’m trumps wheelhouse as he has proven over and over on social media. There are now two major splinter groups within his own party that have openly stated they will not vote for Trump. Sure, his base supporters will vote for him because they enjoy drinking the same Kool Aid too but the swing states like Florida and Michigan but not so much. The number 1 issue in the country right now is Covid where 54% have indicated they disapprove of trumps handling of the situation and if you watched his recent rally yesterday where his supporters were asked to mask up, they booed the announcement and Trump himself yet again downplayed the seriousness of the crisis. I’m sure Roger Stone isn’t masking up either. You remember him as the GOP controlled Senate Intelligence Committee called him out as a key actor in Russia’s meddling in 2016 election and Trump pardons the traitor prior to the Committee’s recent findings. Trump might very well win but by a landslide…that Kool Aid must be laced with some hallucinogenics. Trump says if Biden is elected, there will be more violence but guess what….we already have that under Trump as witnessed earlier this week by a 17 year old wannabe Rambo. Trump thrives on chaos and hopedore of his base will take to the streets thatore than likely will result in more Rambo like actions from guys like the 17 year old kid. Yeah, that Kool Aid must taste pretty sweet.
“are right in Trump’s wheelhouse….” “hopes more of his base”……vs hopedore….i guess my fingers aren’t as nimble as they once were.
Neither is your brain.
As expected, a Trumpster weighs in with a visceral response. LOL.
No Kool-Aid here. Any comment regarding the first paragraph of actual statements from Hillary, Waters, Gore? It is all projection onto Trump what they have already been doing.
No sarcasm at all. So everyone prefers the Bush/McCain/Romney GOP that plays nice and constantly compromises? I kind of dislike both parties, and view Trump as a revolution within Washington DC, and the swamp is really fighting back against him, in both parties.
Entrenched, unelected bureaucrats of both parties will naturally speak out against President Trump because they are in self preservation mode.
Covid=come to Chinatown, no masks, subways, no subways, nursing homes must take patients, social distance, airnborne transmission, animal to human transmission, asymptomatic, shutdowns, essential, non-essential, mask-up-save lives, patriotic duty to mask up, governors and emergency powers becoming tyrants, fear based decision making, fear based explanations- all have an effect upon the population of confusion, fear, isolation and despair.
I see President Trump making very patriotic speeches and defending old fashioned American principles. I’ve voted for too many fraud GOP RINO’s.
As far as chaos, do all lives have value? Do only Black Lives Matter?
Is a Marxist revolution a good thing for our country?
Are police officers a valuable part of your community?
Do you all approve of rioting and looting? Democrat party is encouraging it and has been for the last several months. Is that Kool-aid?
Explain Qanon please…
How do you determine I am part of a cult from a few comments?
You seriously think Trump is going to win 45 States?
Please take a wager on that.
Is the 45 out of 50 the only thing you read from both posts?
No bets. But I lean towards a Trump landslide as more likely than Biden winning close.
If you define landslide, I’d likely gladly take that wager, too.
Did you see the midterms? It’s only gotten worse since for the guy. I guess anything is possible, but I’d put thousands on any bet that proclaims Trump in a landslide.
Kool Aid Angry, Kool Aid. Watch Trump take one of three actions between now and November….attempt to declare Martial Law and suspend the elections, delay the elections, or if he loses, try to declare the election results as as unfair and rigged and have them challenged in court…the.but is a snake oil salesman.
Even if Trump does go a second term, which I highly doubt will happen, no one with his narcissism will be there to carry on his myopic torch….his methods, if you want to call them that, are not meant to last long term. 5 years from now we will ALL move on from this. Biden will be a one and done president, if he doesn’t die from old age first, or whatever….I don’t understand the black and white nature of your push. What’s wrong with backing the blue or at least the good cops AND getting empathy behind our black brothers/sisters that have been killed carelessly at the hands of bad cops….? Maybe because I am racially mixed I tend to stand on the fence to get better observations from ALL perspectives. Trump seems more of a divider and instigator of the people more than anything, he is high risk high reward — people like him only because he has built an illusion that only he can rebuild the economy and take down big government, of which he has no sole responsibility for nor ability to do either. Be careful you don’t throw out the Trump baby with the swamp water — many close to him have admitted that he can’t be trusted.

Police departments need to (a) fire the KKK members they hired in the 50s through the 80s and (b) retrain cops on everything from escalation to mental health.
We pay their salary. We make the rules.
I agree. The masses will move on from this political fiasco and make the necessary changes via organic homegrown movements with or without the politicians. We don’t need Trump, Biden or their ilk to “guide” us, we already know what needs to be done.
Maybe Idaho is a little different, but Nationally aren’t you concerned about “organic home grown movements” being a viable answer given the bumper sticker/pc/big media influence? Are the Gen-X, MeToo, and whatever going to go beyond short sighted self interest?
Both political parties have had ample time to put forth candidates and platforms to further “what we already know needs to be done.” Look what we’ve gotten.
Gotta wonder if a solid majority actually agrees on “what needs to be done”.
ONEOLDBEAV — It will be difficult since we live in an era of (dis)-information overload and high school education limited citizenry. It may take a decade, but we need to get back to educating ourselves, especially our youth so they can learn how to learn, make educated decisions, and think for themselves. And I am not saying college is the only way, we need trades, apprenticeships, etc to come back. Need to get back to prioritizing well funded schools, and provide programs for single parents, etc. This needs to happen no matter who is in office.
Hopefully we can get a leadership that takes the long view and embraces our differences rather than pit us against each other, maybe after Trump/Biden in 4 years….? There needs to be change to our two party system, the choices we have been given over the last 4 years is worrisome — not sure what can be done about it. I don’t know, I think most of us are tired of the old guard (Clintons, Obama, Biden), but also don’t want to sell our souls to an idiot like Trump either…..In the mean time we will continue to slog through the mire of our political landscape and system.
@Jockitch,
Your mention of disinformation and the need to “get back to prioritizing well funded schools” reminded me of this article. It’s a look by Daily Signal at an NYT podcast titled, Nice White Parents.
Some will close their minds when they see the Daily Signal is involved and will actually accept the position that white parents who want the best for their kids are the cause of poor performing inner city schools.
As for “well funded schools”, the comparison in a study by a Kennesaw State University professor who has studied the concept of administrative bloat in the K-12 public education system is telling. He found that between 1950 and 2015, the student population at public schools had grown roughly 100%. During that same time period, teaching staff had grown 243%. The administrators?…their numbers increased by 709%

@ONEOLDBEAV
Interesting. After reading the article I was left wondering where all of the money was going outside of the money sucking administrators, then I saw some of the commentary and read the following:
“Both my sister & brother-in-law are retired New York City public school teachers. They are now in their 70’s. Both of them retired when they turned 55. Each got a 50% pension.
To my understanding, the retirement plan isn’t nearly as generous now as it was then, when they started teaching in the 1970’s. But I’m sure that there are still thousands upon thousands of former Board of Ed teachers out there, between the ages of 60 & 85, who are still collecting 50% pensions, & have been since they turned 55.
And it’s not just the teachers. A couple of friends of mine retired from the Housing Authority of New York City, with 50% pensions, when they turned 55. One is in his 60’s now. But the other is still in his 50’s.
The people of New York City will be stuck with the consequences of the Lindsey, Beam, Koch, & Dinkins administrations for decades to come.”
Isn’t Oregon still suffering from this very thing…? Pension program promising too much money to retirees etc….? 50% pension sounds extremely generous. Wow!
I agree I think it’s a culture that is entrenched in some police departments across the country. I can’t pretend to understand the black experience, but I was hassled in my youth while living a smaller, conservative town as a “long-hair” even though I worked part-time until midnight some nights while attending college. I didn’t appreciate the random stops to show my ID on my way home from work.
OTOH, very few can understand the cop experience.
Not saying there are no bad cops, sounds like your small town had at least one.
I hear you. A friend was a police officer for five years and he said it was just too stressful. He became an operating room nurse and found that less stressful! One of my uncles was a Cincinnati cop for 20 plus years, he could tell some stories.
It is interesting to note that even two of his own family members are saying he can’t be trusted but what do they know? How many firings, resignations and defections has trump had with his administration not to mention indictments…pardoning Roger Stone was the icing on the cake. .yeah, he’s going to drain the swamp alright and has now turned it into a cesspool…God help America if he pulls another rabbit out of his butt like he did in 2016.
The warhawk neoconservatives are siding with Biden. I wouldn’t mind seeing them get crushed.
Here we go with the political posts. Keep beating that dead horse!
Keep me coming!
Well, believe it or not, the college football season begins tonight. Two solid FCS programs, Austin Peay and Central Arkansas battle it out in primetime, 6 pm PT on ESPN. Will I be watching? Being the college football addict that I am, it will at least be on in the background. I do like history, the first “COVID era” college football game.
How’s that going for you, buddy?
I watched it off and on. It was a decent game. I guess we will see if there are COVID outbreaks related to on-field play and fans in the stadium as the season progresses. I don’t think the attendance was 2,000 like ESPN said. Annoying to see some fans not wearing masks, so apparently no enforcement, but I don’t know the state mandates in Alabama.
They actually allowed fans? How was that determined (who could attend)?
Here are the details. I guess once they were seated with friends or family members they could remove their masks?
ESPN will televise the 9 p.m. EDT matchup, but the announcers will be working remotely. There were only 2,000 tickets distributed to the schools and sponsors, about 9% of the 22,000-seat capacity at the Cramton Bowl, officials said. Fans are required to wear masks entering the stadium or moving around — they are to practice social distancing at all times — and concession stands will sell only prepackaged items.

Good last few minutes of the game. Football is back!
Refs using electronic whistles clipped on their waist. Coaches wearing masks. Players kinda wearing them when on sidelines. Not sure the rules but coaches seemed frustrated when trying to communicate with players. Eventually masks seemed to be worn more around the chin area.
Why is Angie retweeting an article about UPenn QB signee Ryan Zanelli from March of 2019?
Inquiring minds… https://twitter.com/gregbiggins/status/1102799507706732546?s=21
Can anyone give a reasonable explanation as to why mask wearing is political? Does wearing a mask mean you admit that Covid-19 is real and it’s dangerous? And is it only Democrats that believe this? Does that mean Democrats created this fake virus to cause the economy to tank and make Trump look bad? Does it mean we’re currently living in the fucking Twilight Zone? Just asking for a friend.
It is political because Trump supporters believe the liberal media is making it so — think CNN, etc. Fox News was on the anti-mask bandwagon, or at least their coverage at the beginning of the pandemic was heavily skewed to make masks a constitutional rights issue. Fox didn’t change course on masks and getting behind them, until we had more massive COVID breakouts. Conspiracy sites like American-Thinker, Qanon, and such keep driving the “rights” issues. So naturally people became confused. Add dashes of misinformation regarding the efficacy of masks, and a pinch of Trump refusing to wear one to set an example — this is what you get.
I know this because about 15% of my family and friends get behind Trump, and they were heavily against wearing the masks (until I convinced them otherwise, or Trump finally wearing one because it is “patriotic”) they think they are being used along with the virus to unseat Trump and to keep the swamp intact.
The good news is that 85% of the country, Republican or Democrat believe masks are needed (surveys). Here in predominantly Republican Idaho, 80% of those surveyed want masks….again that percentage went up after several breakouts and I believe after Trump got pressure to explicitly change his stance on them.
But is it reasonable to think wearing masks is an infringement on the rights of Americans when we comply with all kinds of laws that do the same? Why is there no uproar about being forced to where a seatbelt, or not being allowed to drive as fast as we want, or forcing us to vaccinate our children, or not being allowed to drink and drive, having to wear shoes and shirts inside stores, or making us put GFCI protection on bathroom electrical circuits? So many inconvenient laws and rules, but they aren’t political.
This^^^^^^
“Because its “infringing on my freedom”. The democrats and left wing liberal media what to take your rights away!”.
…at least that’s what I keep hearing.
That’s what I was going to say…seems that’s the reason it’s political.
Ironically, it’s also the reason we’re talking about masks instead of college football…
We are such a weird country. I’ve seen images of people in Japan and South Korea wearing masks for at least the past twenty years. It’s a health precaution, nothing more, nothing less that becomes essential in a pandemic.
Culture, it’s all culture
Yup, they think their rights are being taken away — that the masses are “sheep” doing whatever the media tells them to do.
Myself and my large circle are Republican, we all wear masks. Why has this site become so political? I don’t care who you sleep with, who you vote for or if you tolerate me. I’d like to see if anyone has heard about Pac 12 following the big ten on changing minds? But, appears we have a large amount of bias confirmation here. We have the I voted for Obama so I can talk trash leader.
It is laughable I see a person think people aren’t wearing masks. Like where are you all living? That mask wearing would have allowed CFB.
Was a really great site, not giving up on it.
Meh.
Go figure…..personal attacks and another visceral reaction from a trumpster….another fine attribute and in the wheelhouse reaction. If Trump is reelected, I’m sure he’ll have you all drinking more than just Kool Aid…..don’t forget that he openly stated that Putin, Kim Jung Un, and Duterte are “great leaders.” Murdering thugs are “great leaders”?….wow, who knew that EXCEPT Trump…If that statement doesn’t create red flags for EVERY American, he’s got more in store for America if reelected and it’s not good either. Oh, here’s another piece of information….check out Paula White, Trump’s “spiritual advisor”. He actually seeks advice from this lady who appears to be a Tammy Faye Bakker wannabe. Yikes, just yikes!
Paula White is a scary wackjob!!!
Yep, and it doesn’t take too long to figure that out watching some of her “presentations” and Trump is seeking spiritual counsel from her. Trump is the consummate illusionist but he problem is….his illusion or should I say delusion has been America’s unfortunately reality for 3+ years. I think part of Biden’s campaign should be posting videos of Paula White followed by this is President Trump’s “spiritual advisor.”
Ha! In today’s climate, that might be just what some people want/need to convince them to vote for Trump.
Write up on luton in jags camp.

Thanks for the link.
A surprising(?) comment that Jake has, “just enough young-gun reckless abandon that makes him exciting. “
And this, “Minshew, Luton and Dobbs are more akin to stretch the edges of the pocket.”
Gruden calls him a “young player” … that’s after 30 years in Corvallis.
I’m bringin’ beer & chips!
We lost a few posts in the process of fixing the site…sorry about that.
And the twitter scroll disappeared off the thread pages. No big deal though.
That’s been the case since the update in October.
This theme would require significant modification to add it, and people back then said not worth it.
Adds a novel, abstract quality to the thread..
Trey Lowe and Treshaun Harrison have been cleared to play this season without sitting out, if there is a season eventually.
Wonder how the Beavs will plan to handle DT with Jordan Whitley’s recent cardiac tumor news?
https://twitter.com/OregonianSports/status/1300870349605699586?s=19
That’s assuming the season starts after Jan 1, 2021. And it’s not cleared really, it just means that the one calendar year mark has passed since their transfer and therefore the normal rules allow it.
If the B10 reverses course and starts in late October, does the PAC follow suit? The midwest is in full revolt over a fall without CFB…personally I think the decision will be changed.
Decision changed *by the Big 10. I have no idea what the PAC will do.
My bad, I didnt actually read the article and just skimmed the headline. Thanks for screening.
Will be interestimg to see if Big10 gets it together and has a season now that they have the backing of the Fed testing stockpile to cover their defficiencies.
Why is there a stockpile for the Big10 but not the Pac12? Thought those 2 conferences were working on their timelines as a unit?
And Trump asks B10 to play fall football….
…some key states in election….
Possibly a response to this ad that came out a few days ago.

Nice. Called it months ago!
I jumped to conclusions. Technically they will have served their 1 year sitting period when Winter term starts, so they would be eligible anyway if the Pac starts playing in January.
Still strange the Pac12 never ruled on their waiver eligibility up to this point. Probably pointless, but what if the Pac12 decides to start playing in October or November? These giys deserve to know if they can actually play.
